Black smoke still billows from steam locomotives in southeastern Pennsylvania, just as it has since 1832. The Strasburg Rail Road, said to be “America’s oldest continuously operated railroad,” turned 190 years old June 9.

The Strasburg Rail Road is one of the nation’s top destinations for passengers wishing to catch a ride behind a steam train. It’s given thousands of eager riders the chance to see how American railroads operated during their glory days.

Best of all, it’s not the only place where you can trundle down the tracks on steam power. Several railroad organizations offer steam engine excursions – and they’re waiting for you to climb aboard this summer.

Abilene & smoky valley.

steam railway trips near me

When railroads started retiring steam locomotives in the mid-20 th century, some wound up in city parks. But decades later, the one in Abilene, Kansas, got back on track. The Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad operates former Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe No. 3415, a 4-6-2 (those numbers representing the wheel arrangement) Pacific-type locomotive that pulls passenger excursions on select weekends throughout the year.

The locomotive was restored to service after sitting in a municipal park for 40 years. It’s worked for the railroad for several years and is about to undergo significant rebuilding, so 2022 will be the last chance to roll down the rails behind this engine – at least for a while. Repair work on the locomotive will coincide with continued track rehabilitation work, ensuring smooth rides for years to come.

No. 3415 operated over Memorial Day weekend and drew a large crowd, says Ross Boelling, the railroad’s president and general manager. “There’s only very few Pacifics left,” Boelling says. “It’s the only steam locomotive within a 500-mile radius of Abilene that’s operating. … She always seems to draw a lot of attention.”

The engine will operate during Fourth of July weekend, Labor Day weekend, and during Abilene’s annual heritage celebration in late September and early October. Round-trips on the line last roughly two hours. Tickets for adults ages 12 and over are $40; children ages 3 to 11 can ride for $20, and children ages 3 and under ride for free. Cumbres & Toltec

steam railway trips near me

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is planning to fire up its summer season of steam train rides July 1, railroad officials say. The 64-mile railroad operates between Antonito, Colorado, and Chama, New Mexico, carrying passengers through tunnels, over streams, past wildlife habitats and across a lengthy, vintage trestle bridge. It also climbs to the top of Cumbres Pass. At more than 10,000 feet, it’s the highest point of elevation a steam locomotive has ever reached in North America. The railroad holds the claim to the largest fleet of narrow-gauge steam locomotives in the U.S.

The railroad has introduced new special trains for the summer season, including dinner and brunch trains powered by steam locomotive No. 168. Ticket prices for regular, full steam excursion train trips start at $135 for adults. The railroad offers shorter trips at lower costs, and tickets are selling out quickly. To purchase tickets, visit cumbrestoltec.com .

“If there was ever a year to book early, this is it,” says Scott Gibbs, the railroad’s president. “Our fans are excited to get back to rail adventures and early sales are strong. We’d hate for anyone to be disappointed, so plan ahead.”

Durango & Silverton

steam railway trips near me

Not many registered historical sites move by rail. But the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in Durango, Colorado, does. Winding through the San Juan National Forest, this railroad has been voted as one of the world’s best train rides, according to the American Travel Writers Association.

The railroad can track its history back to the narrow-gauge Denver & Rio Grande Western Railway in the early 1880s. The line between Durango and Silverton was nearly abandoned in the 1940s, but it found a new life serving as a movie set. It’s been featured in several productions, including Around the World in 80 Days , and it’s been a registered National Historic Landmark since the 1960s, according to the railroad’s website.

The railroad provides year-round passenger service behind its steam engines, which date back to the early 1920s. Tickets for the Durango to Silverton round-trip start at $101 for adults and $65 for children ages 4 to 11. Tickets can be purchased by visiting durangotrain.com .

Grand Canyon Railway

steam railway trips near me

The Grand Canyon Railway offers steam locomotive-powered rides around one of America’s most impressive land formations. The 65-mile trip, billed as a “legendary journey to an extraordinary place,” travels from the depot in Williams, Arizona, to the South Rim of the canyon. A round-trip lasts more than four hours.

The railroad offers several different classes of service, including Pullman class, coach class, first-class, and luxury parlor class. In luxury parlor class, passengers can “ride like a baron,” according to the railroad; this class offers a private bar, snacks, and an open platform on the rear of the car where riders can stand and “see the landscape from a different and unique perspective.” Along the way are Ponderosa pine, spruce, and fir trees, as well as mountain lions, elk, and bald eagles. The train ride includes live musical entertainment, according to the railroad’s website, and passengers can read the railway’s newspaper, the Territorial Times.

Upcoming steam engine excursion dates are July 2, Aug. 6, Sept. 3, Sept. 17 for the railway’s anniversary, and Oct. 1. Tickets for children ages 2 to 15 start at $32, and tickets for adults ages 16 and older start at $67. Children under 2 ride for free. For more information, visit thetrain.com .

Mount Washington Cog

steam railway trips near me

As the world’s first mountain-climbing railway, this Mount Washington, New Hampshire, attraction takes visitors high in the sky behind coal-fired steam locomotives. Riding more than 6,000 feet to the top of the mountain, visitors can see much of the American northeast from the comfort of their seats in the train car – on a clear day, of course.

Robert Arey, the railroad’s director of marketing, says, “Mount Washington is the highest peak in the northeast, so you do get up high in elevation. It’s also home to the world’s worst weather. Some days, you might get to experience being in a cloud … or you might get views of five different states, including Canada, and also the Atlantic Ocean if those conditions are right. It gets you a whole new way to experience the summit of a mountain.”

To climb the mountain, the railroad’s two operating steam locomotives use a rack system, which operates like a bicycle chain, Arey says. The locomotive powers a cog gear that hooks into the rack, pulling the engine and passenger car up the mountain as the wheels glide along the rails.

Round-trips last three hours: two hours for travel up and down the mountain, and one hour for visitors to explore the summit. The railway normally offers a morning trip and evening trip, and this year, it’s added a third trip on Saturdays because of high demand, Arey says. Steam train rides sell out quickly, and tickets cost roughly $100 per person. To purchase tickets and look at train schedules, visit thecog.com.

Nevada Northern Railway

If you’ve ever watched Willie Nelson’s 1988 TV film Once Upon a Texas Train , then you’ve seen the Nevada Northern Railway in action. The Nevada Northern calls itself “the best preserved, most authentic, American short-line railroad in existence.” In Ely, Nevada, about 250 miles north of Las Vegas, this railroad offers 90-minute rides behind steam engines built in the early 1900s. Along the line, passengers can see vintage mining structures, a ghost town, tunnels, and mountain scenery. Some trains may even get “robbed” by the museum’s actors. The railroad even has a mascot: Dirt the Cat, who reached social media celebrity status for his dirty, furry appearance while hanging around the repair shop.

Passenger trains have been a mainstay in the railroad’s roughly 110-year history, so it’s no surprise that the museum’s steam locomotives have been featured in countless films and other productions. Hands-on events allow train enthusiasts to try their hand at operating the locomotives and other equipment.

Tickets cost $35 for adults, $29 for seniors 65 and older, and $10 for children ages 4 through 12. Children under 4 ride for free, and all children ride free Monday through Thursday each week. To purchase tickets and learn more, visit nnry.com.

Strasburg Rail Road

steam railway trips near me

Though no formal birthday celebrations have taken place, the railroad’s 190th summer promises to steamy and full of fun, says Hope Graby, the railroad’s marketing representative. Ticket prices for regular accommodations onboard trains start at $10 for children ages 2 to 11 and $18 for adults. More ticketing information is available online at strasburgrailroad.com .

The railroad has continued to add new events, including tours of its mechanical shop and opportunities for visitors to run steam locomotives, Graby says. As for the railroad’s next 190 years, it’s full steam ahead.

“The future for Strasburg is really leveraging opportunities to put steam railroading, the importance of it, the impact it has had on our country, in front of new audiences,” Graby says. “Unlike some tourist railroads, we’re a real, working railroad. You don’t have people who are playing parts or actors. You have real conductors, real firemen, real engineers, real mechanics that are doing this day in, day out with extreme love and passion for what they do.”

I’m not familiar with the locations of some trains. However, the article about Strasburg train never gave a state where this train is located. Is it possible to find out its location?

What a great article, from the top picture of the Strasburg Rail Road train, to the bottom feature on it. I love trains for their historical importance, beauty, unique sound and of course the wonderful sight of the steam itself’ especially when its ‘cloud’ white. They’re also a way to experience a little of the 19th century in the 21st.

I was glad to read about the one in Abilene being restored for real service after being in that municipal park for 40 years. I’m sure if it could talk it would say “Thank you for letting me do what I was built to do, once again!” That’s unusual. Once a train like that would be relegated to a park curiosity attraction, the chances of this happening would be slim to none without a lot of serious push for it. The track rehab is equally important as stated.

All of these trains offer unique fun and adventure no other mode of travel offers. I’d love to go on all of them! You’ve done a wonderful job on this feature Jordan, and I appreciate the links too. Thank you!

Steam in 2021

It’s too early to tell what will happen with certainty, given the grip the virus still holds on the nation. But it’s not too early to anticipate. As always with big steam, there are many dreams of excursions and plans for trips drawn up and ready to dust off. Every big steam operator knows their engine(s) are people magnets. None of them want to be superspreader events. So, for sure, don’t expect much in the first half of 2021. But if masks and vaccines have the impact they’re expected to, the last half of 2021 could get good.

A Big Boy locomotive leads a yellow passenger train through the Great Plains.

Union Pacific 4014 / 844

Either or both of UP’s mighty locomotives are ready to roll. I cannot count the number of times I’ve heard fans comment that they were glad the Golden Spike Sesquicentennial tours with Big Boy 4-8-8-4 No. 4014 and Living Legend 4-8-4 No. 844 were in 2019 and not happening in 2020 — or none of it would have occurred. I’ve also heard plenty of fans who sat out 2019 because it would be too crowded/crazy/insert-your-favorite-overthinking-excuse-here say they wish they’d ventured out after all since they got zero UP steam action in 2020. Confidence is high that if the pandemic is brought under control, expect to see UP steam burnish the rails.

Reading & Northern 2102

The big homemade T-hog was test fired in January, and I suspect that R&N management is eager to button up the engine and get the big 4-8-4 out for the first time in 29 years. In 2020, R&N found ways to keep running excursions with social distancing and long trainsets, so the Road of Anthracite may be one of the places to be this year for Big Steam that you can both ride and chase.

Santa Fe 2926

The big 4-8-4 was ready to fire up and move for the first time last spring when the pandemic hit. New Mexico has strictly enforced COVID-19 rules, and the Albuquerque-based crew know they have a big crowd of supporters who want to be on hand for that first move, so they’ll wait until the rules are relaxed. There’s a tool car to complete, but otherwise, it may be time for a southwestern road trip to see the first AT&SF 2900-class locomotive in steam in the preservation era.

Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum’s Southern Railway 4501

Everyone’s favorite Mikado will be back for trips to north Georgia. For the past 55 years, the 2-8-2 ’01 has been thrilling fans new and old, and she’s never lost a bit of her magic. If you haven’t treated yourself to one of TVRM’s day-long north Georgia trips, here’s the year to enjoy a classic. I checked tvrail.com for a schedule and it’s not yet posted for 2021, but when it is, jump at the chance!

Western Maryland 1309

The newly restored 2-6-6-2, the last Baldwin, test ran New Year’s weekend. Now it’s down to the punch list, and significant track work. After a well-deserved rest, crews returned to jump on the final work list in January. How soon before we see steam on Helmstetter’s Curve again? I expect the railroad to restore track in and around the shop at Ridgeley, W.Va., and the depot just across the Potomac River at Cumberland, Md., first. That enables engineer-for-an-hour operations to start and get some cash coming in. If state and local sources of funding come through to pay for track work, the rest of the railroad could be in operation by midsummer. With a landmark locomotive and a great fleet of passenger cars to go behind it, all that are needed is the rails to run her on.

Norfolk & Western 611

The Class J 4-8-4 locomotive was getting tender axle work this winter at its home away from home, the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, N.C. More on that soon. Again, if things improve, I foresee the J running at Spencer at the very least.

A worker holds a pole next to a steam locomotive moving slowly.

Soo Line 1003

The Wisconsin-based 2-8-2 Mikado did us a great honor in 2020 by running Trains’ 80th anniversary photo charter. I expect to see it back again this fall!

Milwaukee Road 261

This 4-8-4 steam locomotive based in Minneapolis is another Midwestern favorite that I predict will polish the rails in its home state of Minnesota.

Southern Pacific 4449

If all returns to normal in the world of medicine, I don’t see why the annual holiday trains wouldn’t run this fall out of Portland, Ore., behind this venerable 4-8-4.

Canadian Pacific 2816

CP says it fired up the spotless 4-6-4 Hudson steam locomotive last fall for its Holiday Train online special and moved the engine in the Calgary, Alberta, yards for the taping. But the temptation may just be there to take the engine out once more on the main line.

3 thoughts on “ Where to find main line steam locomotives in the U.S. in 2021 ”

Great idea for a listing — but you left out the previous Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge steam engines still running on 2 longer scenic rail lines. They are: ‘The Durango – Silverton’ and ‘The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad.’ It is something to see a double-headed Cumbres train leaving out of Chama, NM climb the 4% grade to the top of Cumbres Pass. And the view down onto the Animas river as the Silverton heads into the mountains on it way to it’s name-sake town is breathtaking, with the steam engine pulling the train as it heads up river. They are 2 great steam rides that can be done back-to-back over just a few days, given how close they are to each other.

We love the C&TS and D&S … they’re just not what we’re thinking of when we say “main line steam”.

With the race to vaccinate millions from coronavirus when those hope mainline steam was to make up for shutdowns in 2020 when in 2021 those expect a top ten list of mainline steam in 2021 when some of the highlights on the top ten list is not just one but two Santa Fe 484’s had those wonder if there was to be a photo opportunity of LA based 3751 and new Albuquerque based 2926 in a doubleheader. As other items on a top ten list of mainline steam in 2021 is the test of the last Baldwin ever built restored to operating condition when those expect western Maryland 1309 to run on the horseshoe curve.

AUTHENTIC RAILROAD EXPERIENCE WITH BEAUTIFUL SCENERY

a drawing of a face

My family had a wonderful time. We're so happy Santa came to visit! What a kind, patient Santa! I would've loved to be abe to crack the window for some fresh air, but thats okay. Such a magical ride for my little one. Thank you!

icon

Candy canes, Christmas cookies, hot chocolate, writing letters to santa with a fun train ride and a visit with Santa! Fun, fun, fun! Very friendly staff, this was a really nice experience. Will do again!

Fun time! Rockaway and Garibaldi are beautiful and not as "touristy" as several other coastal towns. Best to get there a bit early to ride in the outdoor cars where all the action is. On the way back we got stuck in the covered car and you can't hear any of the tour info back there.

This is a very scenic ride. The staff are awesome and are very knowledgeable. The history is very interesting and I highly recommend riding this train, I will do this again.

Consider a donation via your Paypal account to the benefit of OCSR. We are a tax-exempt 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and any donated amount goes directly into the continual maintenance and operation of the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad.

Redwood Forest Steam Train

Ride into the past on 19th century steam trains.

Travel over trestles, through towering redwood groves and up a winding narrow-gauge grade to the summit of Bear Mountain as conductors narrate the history of Roaring Camp, the railroad and the forest.

In the 1880s, narrow-gauge steam locomotives were used to haul giant redwood logs out of the mountains. Roaring Camp’s steam engines date from 1890 and are among the oldest and most authentically preserved narrow-gauge steam engines providing regularly scheduled passenger service in America.

Felton, Calif. – Among geared locomotives, three companies (Shay, Heisler and Climax) are widely credited with dominating the logging and industrial marketplace. Shay locomotives were designed in 1872 particularly for Western U.S. logging operations. Roaring Camp Railroads owns several Shay locomotives, a Heisler, Climax, and five diesel engines. Not all are operational as some are undergoing renovation and extensive refurbishing. On any given day, one might see one or more of the following steam locomotives transporting visitors deep into the heart of the breathtaking Santa Cruz Mountains.

All departures are roundtrip to Bear Mountain, returning to Roaring Camp.

Princess Elizabeth

Affectionately known as "Lizzie" this locomotive was built in 1933 and named after a then young Princess later to become Queen Elizabeth 11. It is one of the two remaining preserved Princess Royal Class Locos. "Lizzie" played a key role on the Diamond Jubilee celebrations - her whistle signalled the start of the Thames Jubilee Pageant and hauled the Royal Train during the Diamond Jubilee Tour.

Built in 1947 at Brighton for the old Southern Railway, Tangmere was a Battle of Britain Class locomotive that regularly hauled celebrated express trains like The Golden Arrow and The Bournemouth Belle from London to the South Coast.

With six 6ft 2ins driving wheels and weighing 86 tons, Tangmere – named after an RAF world war two airfield near Chichester in West Sussex – notched up more than half a million miles before being withdrawn from scheduled service. Now fully restored in all its glory, a sight to behold!

Given the number 60163, the loco was named Tornado in honour of top gun RAF pilots who flew Tornado jets during the first Gulf War in 1990/91 and proudly displays the crests of former RAF bases at Leeming and Marham next to its nameplates.

Flying Scotsman

To mark the 100th anniversary of Flying Scotsman - the most famous steam locomotive of all time - we’re heading to Edinburgh for a journey of a lifetime on board the Northern Belle.

Flying Scotsman was built in Doncaster, the first locomotive of the newly formed London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). By 1924, when it was selected to appear at the British Empire Exhibition in London, the loco had been renumbered 4472—and given the name 'Flying Scotsman' after the daily 10.00 London to Edinburgh rail service which started in 1862.

Steam Saturdays

Our steam locomotives are scheduled to pull the train on the first saturday of the month march-october.

The Grand Canyon Railway celebrates the history of rail travel with several steam-powered excursions to Grand Canyon National Park each year. An operational steam locomotive can be a rare sight in the 21st Century, which is why we keep two fully-restored vintage steam locomotives in service to pull The Train on select dates throughout the year. Check the calendar to see which dates will feature either GCR No. 29 or GCR No. 4960 out in front of The Train.

Steam Saturdays may be cancelled at any time, including the planned day of departure, due to weather, mechanical, or other issues.

Note: During Steam Saturdays, only the 9:30 AM train will be a steam engine.

Meet Our Steam Locomotives

Image

Steam locomotive No. 29 was built in 1906 by the American Locomotive Company in Lima, Ohio to haul iron ore trains on the Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Retired from the LS&I RR in 1960, it was sold to the scenic Marquette & Huron Mountain Railroad but was never used. Grand Canyon Railway purchased No. 29 when the line was reborn in 1989 and it entered service on the Grand Canyon line in 1990, operating until 1995. No. 29 saw service again from 2004 to 2008 after a complete overhaul. From 2008 to 2016, it enjoyed a semi-retirement as a static display locomotive, first greeting our passengers arriving to the platform in Williams, later on display in front of the historic Grand Canyon Depot at the South Rim.

In 2016, Grand Canyon Railway undertook the major project of bringing No. 29 back to life to help celebrate the National Park Service’s Centennial Anniversary, and it returned to the rails for the first time in 8 years on August 24, 2016 pulling the round-trip train to and from Grand Canyon National Park. Later that week, No. 29 paired up with sister locomotive No. 4960 for the first steam double-header to Grand Canyon since 2012.

Steam Locomotive No. 4960 was built in 1923 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and saw service on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad hauling iron ore and other freight throughout the American Mid-West. Retired from CB&Q RR in 1960, it pulled excursion trains, museum trains, and circus trains throughout Wisconsin and other mid-western States until the early 1970’s when it was put on static display. Purchased by Grand Canyon Railway in 1989, in 1996 No. 4960 underwent one of the most extensive locomotive rebuilding and restoration projects in modern history, converting it from a coal-burner to burn diesel as fuel. Further modifications were made to it in 2009, as GCR converted it to run on recycled Waste Vegetable Oil. Since 2009, No. 4960 has served as the backbone of our steam fleet, powering all of our steam excursions and round-trip trains to Grand Canyon. Due to its popularity, No. 4960 has taken its place as an icon among operational steam locomotives in the United States.

Steam Locomotives in the 21st Century

Awards and Recognition

Iso environmental certification.

The Grand Canyon Railway recently became the first tourist railway in the United States to receive ISO 14001 third-party certification of its environmental management system (EMS) after a two-year process involving complete review, development and implementation of environmental initiatives in all of its operations.

2017 ARIZONA GOVERNOR’S AWARD WINNERS!

Grand Canyon Railway was the recipient of the 2017 Arizona Governor’s Award for Outstanding Historical and Cultural Preservation, honoring our 2016 project to restore historic steam locomotive No. 29. This award is presented annually to the individual, organization, or community that has made the most significant contribution toward the cultural and/or historic preservation of some aspect of the natural, cultural, or aesthetic legacy of Arizona to inspire domestic or international visitation to the state. Locomotives like No. 29 pulled the trains that brought the first travelers en masse to Arizona and our jewel in the National Park crown – Grand Canyon. By operating our two steam locomotives, we give today’s rail passengers a glimpse into the rich history of Arizona tourism. Thank you to the Arizona Office of Tourism for your recognition of our efforts!
