Coral Expeditions – 10 Nights Broome to Darwin

Coral Expeditions I

About This Project

Kimberley Cruise Escapes invites you to discover the remarkable Kimberley Coast. Home to towering waterfalls, rugged outback landscapes, ancient Aboriginal art and abundant wildlife there is simply no place on earth quite like the Kimberley, and no better way to discover it than by small ship.

Join us to experience all of the icons of the Kimberley Coast over ten unforgettable days cruising between Broome and Darwin. In the south, discover remarkable Montgomery Reef and the amazing natural phenomenon of the Horizontal Falls of Talbot Bay. Explore the Mitchell Plateau and cruise the Kimberley’s ‘big’ rivers before discovering the majestic King George River with its towering 80-metre twin falls and the mysterious Bradshaw (Gwion Gwion) paintings of Bigge Island in the north.

This is a land steeped in ancient Aboriginal culture and the legends of Australia’s pioneering past. Travel ashore to view the world’s oldest known indigenous rock art, the mysterious Bradshaw (Gwion Gwion) paintings and soak up the history of early explorers such as Phillip Parker King who first charted this spectacular coastline almost 200 years ago. With two landings most days, with Coral Expeditions you will enjoy more opportunities to fully immerse yourself in the magic of the Kimberley. Aboard our unique ‘Xplorer’ excursion vessel and fleet of inflatable Zodiacs, and with the expert local knowledge of our experienced guides, you are assured of making the most of every minute of your expedition, and do it all in total comfort and unrivalled style.

You can choose to cruise on Coral Discoverer or Coral Expeditions I .

This itinerary is an indication of the destinations we visit and activities on offer. Throughout the expedition we may make changes to the itinerary as necessary to maximise your expeditionary experience. Allowances may be made for seasonal variations, weather, tidal conditions and any other event that may affect the operation of the vessel.

Other birds breeding on the islands include Masked Boobies, Lesser Frigatebirds, Eastern Reef Egrets, Crested, Bridled and Lesser Crested Terns, Common Noddies, Pied and Sooty Oystercatchers, among many others. Day 3 & Day 4

Today we arrive at Montgomery Reef, the world's largest inshore reef system, nestled in Collier Bay. For the next two days we discover the landscape to the east of the Buccaneer Archipelago, that has been shaped by the huge tidal movements of this region which range as high as 14 metres. The massive daily movement of water here creates a unique natural phenomena where water cascades off the top of the reef creating mini waterfalls and rivers. At the southern end of the archipelago is Talbot Bay and Horizontal Falls; once described by David Attenborough as "one of the greatest wonders of the natural world". There is the opportunity to discover more spectacular examples of the Wandjina and Gwion Gwion style rock art too, hidden in the caves and grottos of this water wonderland. *Today's activities are subject to tides and weather conditions.

Included : All meals and beverage s

Horizontal Falls Ponant Kimberley Cruise

Today the ship enters Carreening Bay, which has an interesting history dating back to an 1820 voyage by Lieutenant Phillip Parker King to survey the western coast and complete the map initiated by Flinders. After running aground, King's crew worked hard for 10 days to repair and refloat the vessel. Today there is a three-metre high boab tree at the site with the vessel's name carved into it, said to be the handiwork of the ship's carpenter. The National Heritage listed site is a reminder of fascinating era of exploration.

Arguably one of the most scenic parts of the Kimberley, Prince Frederick Harbour and the Hunter River are lined with ancient rainforest, pristine mangroves and towering sandstone cliffs. Today is all about the wildlife and scenic cruising. Spot saltwater crocodiles and a variety of bird species as you explore the river and mangrove environment by Zodiac®.

If the Mitchell Falls is on your Kimberley bucket-list, today is the day. There is an option to fly by helicopter from Naturalist Beach to Mitchell Falls and experience the three-tiered waterfall from above; a fee applies for this experience.

The Bonaparte Archipelago is a network of islands stretching along 150km of WA's remote Kimberley coast. You'll discover more Aboriginal rock art today as you cruise the remote archipelago and explore the fractured sandstone landforms and rock shelters of Swift Bay. On the walls of these shelters are examples of both Wandjina and Gwion Gwion style rock art, which you'll visit on a guided walk with the expedition team.

Arriving into Vansittart Bay today, guests have an opportunity to discover the ancient Aboriginal Gwion Gwion rock art of Jar Island. Unique to the Kimberley, Gwion Gwion art has gained world prominence in recent years and is thought to date back over 30,000 years and be the oldest detailed depiction of human figures in the world. Join your Expedition Team ashore for a short walk past fascinating rock formations to the site of the Gwion Gwion art galleries.

Today is a highlight for many, with a journey up the King George River passing between the 80-metre-high sides of the gorge walls. The colours of the gorge change with the light as you travel further upstream culminating at Twin Falls; the highest single-drop falls in Western Australia. Fed by the Kimberley wet season run-off, the level of water cascading over the falls varies from year to year and throughout the season. The Ponant Expedition team will lead you Zodiacs® or the ship's tenders to the foot of the Falls, allowing you to get up close to this stunning geological formation.

Any new reservation implies the acceptance of these conditions.

To guarantee your entry into one or several countries, you must ensure that you comply with the formalities and health requirements specific to each destination. In just a few clicks on our online search engine, find all the formalities you must complete prior to your departure (visas, entry authorisations for each country, vaccinations, etc.).

The international situation can change rapidly, so be sure to check this information regularly prior to your departure. However, please note that we always recommend our guests contact the relevant national immigration and customs and border control authorities directly to find out what rules apply to their specific situation. PONANT is not responsible for any decisions made by guests based on the information provided by the online search engine.

The information below is current but subject to change at any time without advance notice from government authorities. Please consult your respective government agencies for visa and health information.

Passport valid for at least six (6) months beyond the completion of your trip. Passport must contain at least two completely clear, blank, unused visa pages for each visa required, not including any amendment pages. Visa pages with stains or ink from other pages in the passport are not usable. Guests who deviate from the scheduled embarkation or disembarkation port should research the foreign entry requirements for the port country. Due to government regulations, regrettably, Ponant will have to deny boarding to any guest who fails to obtain the appropriate travel documentation for this trip.

Australia : an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) must be obtained before your arrival in Australia. For more information, please visit https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-finder . Carriers should be aware that there will not be any physical evidence in your passport. A copy of your ETA must be sent to PONANT at the latest 45 days prior to your cruise date. We also ask you to keep a copy of your ETA and keep it with your passport throughout the duration of your trip.

Australian customs regulations are very strict, especially for the import of food items such as fresh food (even sealed), fruits, eggs, meat, plants, vegetables, seeds, grains. Fur and feathers are also forbidden. We highly recommend you consult this website for further details : https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and-leaving-australia/can-you-bring-it-in.

The use of drones on land in the Arctic and Antarctic regions is also strictly forbidden by international polar regulations. In other regions, it may be possible to use drones on land if permission has been obtained from the relevant authorities of each country and each region travelled through, as well as a pilot’s licence that should be obtained from your home country. Passengers who do not obtain these authorisations expose themselves to the risk of legal proceedings.

Expedition programmes include activities such as zodiac outings and landings (sometimes with "wet landings"), moderate walks to more active hikes, all accompanied by your expedition team of naturalist guides.

Ports of call, visited sites, outings and landings will depend on weather conditions, winds and the state of the sea. These can force a change of plans at any time. The Captain and the Expedition Leader may at any time cancel or stop any activity, or even modify the itinerary. The final itinerary will be confirmed by the Captain, who will take into account the touristic quality of the sites and above all, the safety of the passengers. His decision will be based on advice from experts and authorities.

Travelling to isolated regions is an exhilarating experience. In remote areas, please remember that you are far from modern hospitals with full medical facilities, thus evacuation is extremely expensive. Without adequate medical coverage, all expenses will have to be immediately paid with your personal funds. King George River

25 May 2025 - King George River

Arrival 25/5/2025 Departure 25/5/2025

The journey up the King George River is nothing short of breathtaking. The 80-metre-high sides of the gorge display varying degrees of weathering of the ancient Warton sandstone. The colours and textures of the gorge change with the light as you travel further up the river creating a continual changing scenery that is simply stunning. The journey culminates at the King George twin falls ; the highest single-drop falls in the whole of the Kimberley (80 m or 260 ft). Fed by wet season run-off the level of water cascading over the falls varies from year to year. Your Expedition Team will escort you in either the zodiacs or ships tenders to the foot of the twin falls, and explain all about the stunning geological formations of the canyon.

Vansittart Bay

26 May 2025 - Vansittart Bay

Arrival 26/5/2025 Departure 26/5/2025

Jar Island contains ancient rock art galleries depicting the Gwion Gwion style unique to the Kimberley region. Mainly neglected by, or unknown to, the early European researchers of Aboriginal culture in the Kimberley in favour of the dominant and more dramatic Wandjina art, Gwion Gwion art has in recent years gained world prominence. It is generally thought that this art may extend back to over 30,000 years before our time and represents the first wave of seagoing colonisers of the Australian continent. As it is, these are the oldest detailed depiction of human figures in the world . Join your Expedition Team ashore for a short walk, past some fascinating rock formations, to the site of the Gwion Gwion art galleries.

Ashmore Reef (technical stop)

27 May 2025 - Ashmore Reef (technical stop)

Arrival 27/5/2025 Departure 27/5/2025

Located 600km North of Broome, on the edge of the continental shelf, Ashmore reef consists of 3 low-lying tropical islands surrounded by coral reef. The islands have a combined land area of approximately 54 hectares and are a designated important bird area (IBA). Visitation to Ashmore reef and Islands is strictly controlled and most of the reef is designated as a sanctuary zone where access is prohibited. Our visit to Ashmore reef is required to ensure we comply with Australian government regulations. Should weather, sea and tide conditions permit there may be an opportunity for guests to undertake a zodiac tour to the vicinity of West Island.

Careening Bay

28 May 2025 - Careening Bay

Arrival 28/5/2025 Departure 28/5/2025

Careening Bay was named by Lieutenant Phillip Parker King after his ship, HMC Mermaid , was careened there during his third voyage of discovery in 1820. King surveyed the western coast to complete the map initiated by Flinders 20 years earlier. The Mermaid had been leaking badly and King needed to find a shallow sandy bay where he could careen his boat to undertake repairs. At a high tide, on a warm September afternoon, he ran the Mermaid onto the sands. For ten days the Mermaid crew worked hard before refloating the vessel. The ship’s carpenter carved the name of the vessel and the year into a conspicuous boab tree. The famous boab tree is now 3 metres wide and National Heritage listed. A reminder of a by gone era of exploration!

Swift Bay

29 May 2025 - Swift Bay

Arrival 29/5/2025 Departure 29/5/2025

The Bonaparte Archipelago , is a stunningly rugged maze of islands stretching almost 150 km along Western Australia's remote Kimberley coast. Its colour and scale conspire to take ones’ breath away. Its distant location has meant it has remained an unspoilt and remarkably pristine location to explore and experience. Phillip Parker King named “ Swift's bay " after Jonathon Swift (1667-1745) the author of Gulliver’s travels. The ‘T’ shaped bay is composed of heavily fractured sandstone providing an abundance of rock shelters. On the walls of these shelters are examples of both Wandjina and Gwion Gwion style rock art. Join your expedition team ashore for a guided walk to a number of rock art galleries depicting these unique rock art styles.

Hunter River

30 May 2025 - Hunter River

Arrival 30/5/2025 Departure 30/5/2025

Arguably one of the most scenic parts of the Kimberley coast, Prince Frederick Harbour and the Hunter River are lined with ancient rainforest pockets, pristine mangroves and mosaic sandstone cliffs. They are considered to be some of the most pristine mangrove forests in the world, containing up to 18 different species, supporting a rich and diverse fauna. The sandstone escarpment at the river mouth, known as “Kampamantiya” rises over 200 metres high before giving way to extensive mud banks and mangrove forests home to numerous bird species and the iconic saltwater crocodile . Our expert Expedition Team will share their knowledge with you as you explore this pristine mangrove environment by zodiac keeping a constant lookout for wildlife. You will also have the opportunity to reach the Mitchell Falls by helicopter from Naturalist Island beach.

Collier Bay

31 May 2025   1 June 2025 - Collier Bay

Arrival 31/5/2025 Departure 1/6/2025

Lying to the east of the Buccaneer archipelago, the ancient landscapes of Collier Bay have been shaped by the massive tidal movements the region is renowned for, creating a photographer’s paradise. With a tidal range exceeding 14 metres, recorded near Yule entrance at the southern end of the bay, they are among the largest in the world. This massive daily movement of water creates unique phenomena that occur nowhere else in the world.  Nestled in the centre of the Bay is Montgomery Reef , the world’s largest inshore reef system. As the tide falls a raging torrent of water cascades off the top of the reef, creating turbulent ‘rivers’ and mini waterfalls. At the Southern end of the Bay, Talbot Bay is home to the world’s only ’Horizontal Falls’ described by Sir David Attenborough as “One of the greatest wonders of the natural world.” Hidden in the many caves and grottos of this ancient landscape are a multitude of ancient Rock Art galleries . Here you can find spectacular examples of the Wandjina and Gwion Gwion styles.

As we are at the mercy of weather and tide conditions in this region, the activities mentioned above are only possible experiences and can’t be guaranteed.

Lacepede Islands

2 June 2025 - Lacepede Islands

Arrival 2/6/2025 Departure 2/6/2025

The Lacepede Islands are Western Australia’s most important breeding habitat for Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas), and have been named by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (IBA) . The breeding colony of Brown Boobies is possibly the largest in the world. Up to 20,000 Roseate Terns have also been recorded here. Other birds breeding on the islands include Masked Boobies, Australian Pelicans, Lesser Frigatebirds, Eastern Reef Egrets, Silver Gulls, Crested, Bridled and Lesser Crested Terns, Common Noddies, Pied and Sooty Oystercatchers. Join your expedition team for a guided zodiac tour to view the prolific wildlife. Due to the sensitive nature of the environment, landings are prohibited on the Lacepede Islands.

Broome

3 June 2025 - Broome

Arrival 3/6/2025 early morning Disembarkation 3/6/2025 at 8:00 am

Located in the northwest of the Kimberley region and in the far north of Western Australia, the town of  Broome  is reputed for its history and its glorious  pearling era . The fascinating Chinatown district, which is the historic city centre, and the famous Japanese Cemetery, dates back to 1896, and has a past marked by the immigration of numerous Chinese and Japanese workers, attracted by the prosperous pearl industry at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. Broome is also famous for the “ Staircase to the Moon ”, an optical illusion created by the Moon reflecting on the sand banks at low tide, like a staircase climbing up towards the sky, a unique spectacle provided by nature…

Kimberley

The ultimate explorer's paradise

There is no place on Earth like the Kimberley coast, it tops travel lists time and time again with good reason. The Kimberley is wild and remote with a storied history, and it is untouched by man other than the ancient Indigenous that you’ll find scratched into the walls of the caves. Almost impenetrable, the landscape consists of sparkling horizontal waterfalls, gorges, canyons, ridges, ancient mangrove forests and cliffs. No two journeys here are the same, you might see a humpback whale or a saltwater crocodile while exploring the waters, but you won’t spot any humans. The size of France and nestled at the north of the Western Territory this is a destination for those who love to explore. Join us on a journey to the place that time forgot but that you’ll remember forever.

Zodiacs are used almost every day to access parts of the destination. Additionally, on several occasions, it is only possible embark and disembark the ship by Zodiac.

DiscoveryOneWaterfall72.jpg

The crew were excellent and the food exceptional. The destinations were great and due to the skill of the Captain, we enjoyed them at their best. We have been on many different holidays but rate this as one of the best. We also appreciated the “small” things; an excellent laundry service; no security worries regarding valuables; the top deck was very enjoyable for views, breezes and happy hour with nibbles; the bathroom facilities were spotless. Our Kimberley cruises from Darwin to Broome are more than voyages – they are transformative experiences that immerse you in the awe-inspiring wonders of the Kimberley. Admire curious wildlife, ancient rock art galleries, hidden reefs, stunning bays and more on this journey of a lifetime…

DARWIN, KUNUNURRA

After a morning flight from Darwin to Kununurra you’ll be met at the Airport and shuttled to your accommodation. Early next morning you’ll enjoy a seaplane flight from Kununurra to the Berkeley River where you’ll meet the crew and board the boat. Your-13 night cruise begins.

THE BERKELEY RIVER

The stunning red ochre cliffs bordering the Berkeley River dominate the scenery as we cruise through this magical region of beautiful waterfalls and freshwater pools. The Berkeley has extensive smaller creeks feeding into it and drains the Seppelt and Collison Ranges and Gardner Plateau.

KOOLAMA BAY

Originally named Rulhieres Bay, Koolama Bay was re-named for the ill-fated 340ft vessel ‘Koolama’ that was attacked by the Japanese during WWII. After the attack, she made her way into the Bay, dropped off her passengers and then travelled to Wyndham where she sank after another bombing raid.

KING GEORGE RIVER

The magnificent King George River flows into Koolama Bay and is bordered by wonderful sandstone-coloured cliffs. It is here you will see the spectacular King George Falls; the tallest falls in Western Australia. Be prepared for a shower! At this time of year, the spray from the falls reaches up to 500 metres down the gorge and the thundering noise of the falls adds to the excitement.

YORK SOUND & THE HUNTER RIVER

Prince Frederick Harbour lies within York Sound and it is here that we find the Roe and Hunter River estuaries. This area boasts sensational scenery, with cathedral-like gorges and eroded sandstone features such as the Indian Head at the entrance to the Hunter River.

CAREENING BAY

Careening Bay is within the southern part of Nelson Bay where, in 1820, Phillip Parker King careened the vessel HMC ‘Mermaid’ for repairs whilst surveying the Australian coastline. His carpenter carved the vessel’s name into an ancient Boab tree which is still visible today, 200 years later!

ST GEORGE BASIN & THE PRINCE REGENT RIVER

Within the St George Basin are two flat-topped hills, Mt Trafalgar and Mt Waterloo, which provide a spectacular backdrop as you cruise to the mouth of the Prince Regent River . This river is the eroded remains of the longest single straight lineament in Australia, making it yet another geological wonder. Get your camera ready as you experience some spectacular scenery, flora and fauna on our journey down this remote and pristine waterway, concluding at the majestic King Cascade Falls. This magnificent site is where American model, Ginger Meadows, was fatally attacked by a crocodile in 1987, a horror story that has been retold around the world. Keep an eye out for crocodiles as you view these magnificent falls which cascade over fern-covered tiers in breathtaking splendour.

HANOVER BAY & CAMDEN HARBOUR

Within Hanover Bay are the pristine sands of Hanover Beach. It is here, in 1838, where Lt. George Grey unloaded his Timor ponies and began the first land-based expedition of North West Australia in search of the great inland sea. The journey soon ended when he was speared by Aborigines. Despite this, Lt Grey reported back positively describing the area as ‘lush and fertile’. This glowing report encouraged a group of optimistic farmers to establish a new settlement in Camden Harbour in 1864. This was a total disaster from the start. The ruins of that settlement, which lasted only 9 months, can still be seen and the graves of some of these tough pioneers can be found on nearby Sheep Island.

SAMPSON INLET

Sampson Inlet leads into a monsoonal rainforest pocket with almost permanent fresh water. Many previous passengers have called this the most beautiful spot on the Kimberley coast .

MONTGOMERY REEF

Located at the beginning of the Buccaneer Archipelago , is Montgomery Reef . This 400 sq km reef can emerge up to 4 metres above the waterline at low tide, creating a visual spectacle of waterfalls and sea life. Several small islands dot the reef and support numerous bird species , crocodiles, turtles, and fish life .

TALBOT BAY & THE HORIZONTAL FALLS

Talbot Bay is home to the famous Horizontal Falls (and the eighth wonder of the natural world according to Sir David Attenborough himself). The region’s massive tides create a spectacular scene, sending huge volumes of water pouring through two narrow chasms in the land formation when the tides reach peak flow in both rising and falling conditions. With up to 10m of height difference between the waters of each of the two inland bays and the sea, the water gushes through creating whirlpools, boils and raging currents. In Cyclone Creek, the incredible marine life includes impressive Tawny Nurse sharks which often come to greet us.

SILICA BEACH

Silica Beach, on Hidden Island, boasts pure white sands and clear blue water. It’s the kind of beach one imagines should be found on an island paradise. It’s a lovely place to take a dip in the shallows.

DERBY & BROOME

This morning you wake up in Derby as your exceptional adventure along the Kimberley Coast concludes . A bus will be waiting to take you to your chosen destination in Broome.

This morning you wake up in Derby as your exceptional adventure along the Kimberley Coast concludes. A bus will be waiting to take you to your chosen destination in Broome.

KUNUNURRA, MITCHELL PLATEAU & HUNTER RIVER

After a morning flight from Darwin to Kununurra, an airport shuttle will take you to your accommodation. Breakfast is provided the next morning before you’ll board a plane and enjoy a scenic flight over the mighty Mitchell River and its majestic Mitchell Falls and then onto the Hunter River. Your 9-night cruise is about to begin.

This morning you will arrive in Derby, say your goodbyes and board the coach to your chosen destination in Broome.

These itineraries list all the places you can reasonably expect to visit on your cruise from Darwin to Broome . It is likely, however, that there will be additional places of interest visited on the actual cruise, time and tides allowing, which is why we prefer not to give you a day-by-day itinerary. The Captain aims to maximise the cruising experience for all passengers, so he will decide when and where he will take you during your cruise along the Kimberley coast . In this sense, every cruise is a little different and each passenger’s experience is unique.

Understanding Small Ship Cruises

What sets small ship cruises apart.

Small ship cruises offer a unique and intimate experience compared to larger cruise ships. With fewer passengers on board , small ships provide a cozy atmosphere where you can truly connect with your family and other travelers. The smaller size also means the ship can dock at smaller ports unreachable by larger vessels, giving you the chance to explore hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path destinations.

The personalized service on small ships is a standout feature. The staff can cater to your family’s needs more effectively, ensuring a more tailored and enjoyable vacation experience for everyone. From attentive crew members to knowledgeable guides, you’ll feel like you’re on a floating boutique hotel where your comfort and satisfaction are the top priorities.

The Appeal for Families

The family-friendly environment ensures that both parents and children can relax and have fun in a safe and welcoming setting. Activities onboard cater to all ages , from educational programs for kids to relaxing spa treatments for parents.

One of the key advantages for families is the ability to create lasting memories together . Whether it’s exploring a new port of call, enjoying a family meal on deck, or participating in exciting shore excursions, small ship cruises provide ample opportunities for quality family time. With fewer crowds and a more intimate setting , you can bond with your loved ones without the distractions of a larger cruise ship.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Cruise

Size and capacity.

When selecting a cruise for your family adventure, think about the ship’s size and capacity. Opting for a small ship cruise ensures a more intimate experience with fewer passengers, allowing for personalized attention from the staff. This can enhance your family’s interactions and make the cruise feel cozy and exclusive. On smaller ships, you won’t have to contend with large crowds, giving you more space to relax and enjoy the journey. Consider how the size of the ship will impact your family’s comfort and overall experience.

Itinerary Options

While planning a family cruise, consider the itinerary options available. Look for cruises that visit diverse destinations with activities suitable for all family members. Choose itineraries that offer a balance of adventure, relaxation, and educational opportunities. Tailored excursions and ports of call that cater to families can enrich your travel experience and create lasting memories. Ensure the itinerary aligns with your family’s interests and provides a mix of onshore and onboard activities for everyone to enjoy.

Onboard Activities and Child-Friendly Amenities

Evaluate the onboard activities and child-friendly amenities offered by the cruise line. Look for cruises that provide a variety of activities for different age groups, ensuring that each family member has something enjoyable to do. From kids’ clubs and teen hangouts to family-friendly entertainment and educational programs, choose a cruise that caters to your children’s interests. Amenities such as pools, water parks, sports facilities, and themed events can enhance your family’s cruise experience.
