Maine Coast & Harbors – Independence

Maine | History, Industry and Wonder. The beauty of Maine is more than the scenic rivers or majestic national parks; it’s more than the granite mountains or sparkling bays; it’s more than the Greek revival architecture, lobster dinners, or the ships in the harbor; it’s more than the small towns or the tall schooners or the shipyards or the fishing. There is no one thing that makes Maine a beautiful cruise destination, but all of these combined into a magnificent intangible that opens your eyes, mind and heart in wonder to the breathtaking amazement that is Maine.

Your Itinerary

1 Embark in Portland, ME Get settled onboard, then head up on the sun deck to look for whales. Or take your camera for the best views of Portland’s Old Port district.

2 Bar Harbor, ME Located on Mt. Desert Island, you have to take your camera to Acadia National Park. The views are stunning! Visit the summit of Cadillac Mountain – the first of US soil that sees the morning sun – and watch the waves spout as high as 40 feet at Thunder Hole. Ride with an expert naturalist in search of harbor seals, eagles, and other indigenous wildlife. If you’d rather not visit nature today, explore the town of Bar Harbor. Stop in Atlantic Brewing Company, open for tastings 10am-5pm daily. Onboard, we’ll enjoy Jazzou Jones on the piano playing vintage all-American ragtime music, and some of his own composition.

3 Bucksport, ME Explore the historic seaport town of Bucksport, with a beautiful waterfront ornamented with scenic gardens and reflective fountains. Bucksport was a central hub for paper-making industry once upon a time. Though, the town’s paper mill closed in 2014, it now serves as a training center for the Maine Maritime Academy. The town is also particularly well-known for the Penobscot River and the iconic Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory, which is taller than the Statue of Liberty. From this vantage point, view spectacular 360-degree views of the Bay, the Maine countryside, and the distant western mountains.

4 Camden, ME Camden is the ‘tall ship capital of Maine’, with its harbor full of classic schooners, as well as the ‘Jewel of the Coast.’ Enjoy a narrated bus tour of the town, driving through Camden Hills State Park, stopping for a photo op at Mt. Battie with panoramic views of the harbor and bay. Onboard, Steve Hale will give you a glimpse of what it means to be a real Maine lobster man, discussing the lobster-catching business from painting buoys, baiting traps, and bringing in the haul. This will be a great introduction before tomorrow’s Lobsterbake Luncheon!

5 Rockland, ME It’s Rockland, so it’s lobster day! Take a ride on Captain Jack’s Lobsterboat to see the process in action. On the shore of Penobscot Bay, we’ll enjoy a lobsterbake lunch, with local lobster, clams and mussels… we’ll eat under a covered tent, listening to local entertainers. The perfect Maine experience! Other Rockland treasures include the Farnsworth Art Museum, Owls Head Transportation Museum, or make yourself an appointment with Breakwater Kayak Co. for safe and fun kayaking of Penobscot Bay.

6 Boothbay Harbor, ME Boothbay Harbor’s boating industry is equally divided by fishing and recreation, which makes the town the ‘Boating Capital of New England.’ In town, you’ll find art galleries, specialty shops, antique stores and Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens.

7 Bath, ME Bath’s roots lie in the shipbuilding industry. It strongly identifies the town’s persona. Explore Bath’s rich seafaring history at the Maine Maritime Museum, including what life was like for a shipbuilder’s family during the 1890s. For our last evening together, we’ll enjoy the piano stylings of Roberta DeMuro – she takes requests!

8 Disembark in Portland, ME Talk to our small ship experts about lengthening your vacation with a post-cruise stay in Portland. This city has so much to offer, and you’ve hardly had time to see more than the airport! Tour the Wadsworth-Longfellow House, the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company and Musuem, the Portland Museum of Art, Portland Observatory, Victoria Mansion, and so much more!

The Windjammer Experience

Wake up to the smell of coffee and freshly baked muffins. Take your time–there’s no rush to catch a train, make a meal, or plan your day. Find a quiet spot to sit and enjoy the changing light of morning or enjoy easy conversation with your shipmates and crew. After breakfast sit back and relax, or energize yourself – there are sails to be raised!  Guests are invited to help in all shipboard activities.

You’ll spend about six hours each day under sail meandering through the islands and bays of mid-coast Maine. The ever-changing scenery provides guests with close-up views of seals and porpoises, lighthouses and lobstermen, sometimes even whales and puffins.

The best way to experience the Maine Coast

Every afternoon or evening, your windjammer drops anchor in the safe, snug harbor off a quiet fishing village or an uninhabited island where you can go ashore and explore . Each Windjammer has small boats to get people ashore and additional rowboats for guest use. Try your hand at rowing, paddle-boarding, or sailing a dingy.  And once anchored, the pool is open! Dive in to Maine’s crisp refreshing waters (or enjoy watching the hearty ones who do!)

That night you might cap an exhilarating day of sailing with a glass of wine, star gazing, some music or storytelling on deck or perhaps a rousing game of Hearts around the wood stove.

And of course, you won’t go hungry! Windjammers are a movable feast with on-deck dining and fabulous, fresh food. Each vessel has a professional cook and galley crew who craft three homemade meals a day (plus hors d’oeuvres and desserts galore!). Then there’s the beach lobster bake with fresh caught Maine lobster and all the traditional fixin’s. Take a windjammer cruise and the toughest decision you might have to make is how many lobsters to eat at the beach side lobster bake.

Sailing Aboard the Lewis R. French

Cabin aboard the Schooner Lewis R. French

The Lewis R. French has 6 double bed cabins, 2 bunkbed cabins, and 4 single cabins. The cabins are cozy and comfortable. There is standing headroom, nooks and hooks to stow all your gear, and a comfortable bed in every one. Each cabin has running fresh water, an opening window, electric reading lights, and a USB charger and comes furnished with linens, blankets, and towels.

Breakfast aboard the Schooner Lewis R. French

Spend the days trimming sails, steering the schooner, learning about the Maine coast and wildlife, or just sit back, read a book, and watch the scenery drift past. The galley crew cooks up delicious meals on our wood cookstove, so those sea going appetites will be satisfied and then some. When the sun begins to set, the French will settle into a cozy harbor and swing silently at anchor.

National Historic Landmark Schooner Lewis R. French

The French was proudly named a National Historic Landmark and has a large following. From folks that have sailed on her as a windjammer to old-timers who remember her when she carried freight, the French has touched many people. It is a truly unique experience to sail on a vessel that has been active since shortly after the death of Abraham Lincoln!

Coastal Maine Windjammer Cruises: Overnight Schooner Sailing Vacations

' src=

Maine Windjammer cruises will connect you with nature as you adventure along the coast of Maine. These overnight schooner sailing vacations are unique due to their small size and big adventure.

Taking a cruise on any one of the nine ships in the Maine Windjammer Association fleet is a wonderful experience. It’s a time to unwind and unplug as you become part of a unique family of crew and passengers, sailing Maine's beautiful New England coastline in the northern United States.

Who is a Maine Windjammer Cruise For?

We think this experience is great for:

  • A history buff.
  • Anyone who wants a unique adventure on the ocean.
  • A person who is craving a break from technology and devices and wants an “unplugged,” all inclusive experience.
  • Someone interested in being closer to nature than on a typical cruise ship (even a small cruise ship).
  • A person wanting a unique way to see Maine’s Coast for more than a few hours.
  • Someone who wants to understand sailing life a little better.
  • Anyone who wishes they could own a sailboat but can't, for whatever reason. This is a great way to get your sailboat fix!

The History of Maine Windjammer Association

Our captain shared with us that Maine Windjammer Association (MWA) was formed in the 1970s. A few captains of several ships back then came together to be able to afford advertising in the New York Times and a paper in Portland, Maine. Their advertisements looked a little like a divided quilt, with a silhouette or drawing of the ship on it.

Though the ads and form of advertising have changed from paper and print to websites and social media, the camaraderie and strength of like-minded captains has persisted well into the 21st century. The ships are individually owned and operated, but they can attract more guests when they band together.

The Maine Windjammer Association Fleet

Nine ships make up the fleet of the association. Each ship's character differs from the others in terms of its finishes, sails, and vibe, depending on its captain.

Each vessel offers a lobster bake on a coastal Maine island. (If the weather is inclement, the lobster bake may be on your ship, like it was for us. It was still fantastic!)

Age of the Maine Windjammer Cruises Ships

The ships were built within just over a century of each other. The two oldest were built in 1871. That includes the Stephen Taber and Lewis R. French. Grace Bailey was built in 1882. The Heritage was built in 1983. American Eagle, which we sailed on, was built in 1930. All of the ships have been through various refreshes and modernizations over the years, including maintenance (as any boat owner knows is never-ending)

Note that this is not the date that the ship became a passenger-bearing vessel. It's simply when it was built. For example, American Eagle didn't start to take on passengers until 1986, when Captain John Foss, the previous ship owner, remodeled it.

Size of the Schooners: Length and Guest Cap

The ships range in length from 64 feet (Lewis R. French) to 132 feet (Victory Chimes). The American Eagle is 92 feet and felt plenty big yet also intimate.

The number of guests that can sleep on the ship vary as well. While Ladona can sleep the least, at 16 passengers, Victory Chimes can host the most at 40. However, most of the ships fall in the 20 to 30 range, with American Eagle capping out at 26 guests. This does not include the crew. (On American Eagle, we had 6 crew members, including Captain John Foss, who has since retired.)

Maine Windjammer Cruises: Amount of Days

All the ships sail various cruise lengths, from three to six days. Some of the ships can do one or two-day sailings (Lewis R. French, Mary Day, and J. & E. Riggin). Ladona has overnight sailing cruise options that are seven days, and American Eagle has cruises that are eight or nine days as well.

We recommend a minimum of three nights. Our sailing was four days and four nights, and it was wonderful for our introduction to this type of cruising, but not too much, just in case we were iffy about it. (We loved it – next time, we'd spring for a five day! We recount each day in our trip report .)

Ports of Departure and Getting to Coastal Maine

You have to get to Maine to embark on your Maine Windjammer Association adventure, sailing Maine’s cost.

People either fly to Portland, where Maine’s main airport is, and drive to the port from there or fly to Boston and do the same. (The drive from Boston, which is further south along the coast, is just a little longer.)

If you don’t want to rent a car, a number of car services will take you to coastal Maine along with a coach bus option, through Concord Coach Lines . But expect to pay a few hundred dollars, depending on what airport you arrive to and its distance to your port of departure.

Not all of the Maine Windjammer Association cruises leave from the same port – there are two port locations, one in Rockland and one in Camden. The towns are very close to each other, however you'll only need to go to one of the two for your trip.

You can expect for your Maine Windjammer cruise to be closed-loop , meaning it starts and ends in the same port.

One of the main considerations in budgeting for our sailing trip was what it was going to cost us to get to Maine before even getting on the ship. And, candidly, it cost us about the same amount to get to Maine and rent a car as it does to go on Maine Windjammer cruises for a few days. (We rented a car to continue on a 7-day road trip of Maine's coastal towns immediately following our four-day schooner cruise.)

Cost to Sail Maine's Coast with Maine Windjammer Cruises

The length of the cruise and what ship you're going on are the two factors that most affect the cost of sailing with Maine Windjammer Cruises.

Cruises with Maine Windjammer Association vary from $885 to $3,188.

When you are budgeting for your trip, aside from budgeting for transportation to get to the port, you should also allot for tip money. Tips are between 8% to 10% per crew member, per passenger. This adds a few hundred dollars to your trip.

We discuss that a bit more in our Maine Windjammer Cruise packing list post.

Accessibility on the Maine Windjammer Association Ships

Due to the age of the ships, and way you need to climb up and down steep steps (nearly ladders) to get from one deck to another, we do not recommend this type of cruise for anyone with mobility concerns. You simply cannot avoid the steps to get between the decks.

Additionally, if you want to go ashore near ports, you have to tender to land in a rowboat. The way this is done is by lowering a rowboat into the water, then the guests climb down from the schooner to the rowboat with the help of a very small ladder that's simply rope and wooden cross bars.

Lastly, the rooms and space within each cabin are not big enough to accommodate wheelchairs or walkers.

Man going into a rowboat from a sailboat on the water in Maine.

Special Events and Themed Cruises

There are special events cruises every year that may vary slightly, but the overall themes are there. This includes things like the arts and specialty nature cruises, where usually, a specific guide will be on board to educate the guests about the topic. Here are some cruises for you to keep an eye on if any of the activities interest you:

  • Lighthouse cruises
  • Photography cruises
  • Yoga and Wellness cruise
  • Knitting cruise
  • Fall foliage cruise
  • Wine-tasting or beer-tasting cruises
  • Acadia National Park and cruise
  • Meteor shower cruise

Some events are considered Gatherings of the Fleet. This includes things like Great Schooner Race, Camden Windjammer Festival and Schooner Gams, which are when the majority of the Maine Windjammer Association fleet gather in a harbor or right next to one another for a fun and casual gathering.

We experienced a Gam on the sailing we were on with American Eagle, when about seven of the ships were together in a harbor. It was amazing to see the ships sailing into the harbor to moor to spend some time together!

Our cruise also had the option to sign up for watercolor lessons with a watercolor artist and teacher onboard. Carol L. Douglas is a very talented artist. Though we didn't sign up for the workshop, it was amazing to see her students (and the guests) painting “en plein air” throughout our sailing.

Participation in Ship Responsibilities

Participating in things like raising and lowering the sails is completely optional. You'll get FOMO (fear of missing out!) if you don't do it at least once, but it certainly isn't required.

By the end of the cruise, Dan was a pro, furling sails like he'd be doing it his whole life!

They also asked for volunteers to help dry dishes after each meal on our ship, and I helped do it twice to bond with the other guests who were helping, along with the crew. But again, it's not required. It is completely voluntary.

Cruise Ports: Where do the Ships Go?

Unlike a river cruise or ocean cruise with a set itinerary, which may change due to weather but you generally know where you’re going (from Alaska’s ports to European ports and beyond), a cruise with Maine Windjammer Association is open to the captain’s desires of where he or she wants to sail that day.

The adventure is really being on the ship and knowing, overall, you’ll stop in some small coastal Maine towns here or there to walk around for a while and then row back to your moored schooner in the harbor.

We stopped in the harbor of two towns during our trip. One was Stonington (a quaint and picturesque fishing village), and the other was North Haven. Another day, we had the option to go ashore on Russ Island, which was pretty much simply a beautiful, mostly untouched beach that Dan and I enjoyed exploring together for an hour and a half.

What is the Food Like on Maine Windjammer Association Cruises?

From our experience, it's excellent. We were truly in awe of how much food they pump out in such a small g a lley , how often they are creating meals (nearly constantly when the sun is up), and how GOOD it is.

In fact, the BEST lobster we have ever had (including during our 7-day road trip following our Maine Windjammer cruise) was on the American Eagle.

We haven't been on every ship, however, we hear from trusted friends, travel writers, and colleagues that the food on any of the ships is outstanding.

In addition to a lobster bake on every Maine Windjammer Association sailing, you can expect things like fresh baked bread, comforting soups (especially wonderful with how cold it can get as you sail, even during summer in Maine ), coffee and tea with breakfast and lunch, savory breakfasts, sweet desserts, and filling dinners including dessert.

Hi Tiffany! We highly recommend a Maine Windjammer cruise. We’re not any of the ships – we traveled on American Eagle and were happy to write about our experience to spread the word. Visit their website for availability of sailings: https://www.sailmainecoast.com/

Interested in 3-day Windjammer sails in Maine. An 80th birthday present. I have sailed a 16 ft Swampscott dory out of Provincetown for over 20 years and have experience bareboating 30+ sloops on the West Coast of Florida. Some mobility problems after 2 recent knee replacements Miss the sea so much. please advise. Bill Hughes

Hi Bill – Happy 80th birthday! What an amazing way to celebrate! We recommend reaching out to the Windjammer own directly. They are great people! You can participate or not participate as much as you like in the hoisting of the sails and such. The mobility challenges we’d recommend looking out for are the stairs to get to/from the sleeping deck and galley, which is more like a ladder. And also the ladder to get into a rowboat to get to shore when the boat is moored. We’ll email you to connect you with the ship owner. 😉

Cruises to Maine

On a Maine cruise, experience quintessential coastal New England, where outdoor adventure, cultural heritage sites, and maritime tradition await. Visit centuries-old lighthouses as you cruise along the region’s rugged shores. Witness the colorful beauty of Maine’s fall foliage, and feast on fresh lobster during the season.

In port, there’s plenty to discover, from art galleries and quirky boutiques to craft breweries and artisan bakeries—not to mention those famous Maine lighthouses. Enjoy relaxing days at sea with the award-winning service and comfort that Celebrity is famous for aboard a New England cruise to Maine.

Maine Cruise Highlights

Dining on fresh seafood.

One of Maine’s claims to fame is the fresh seafood that comes from its rich coastal waters. You’ll find a variety of fish dishes, but it’s Maine’s oysters and lobster that are some of the most sought-after in the world. Try a traditional lobster roll, or feast on claws drenched in melted butter. Visit an oyster farm to learn how to shuck your own, and sample these briny, buttery treats.

Fall Foliage

One of the best things to see in Maine only happens once a year: fall foliage season. Like the rest of the northeast, the colors of the trees in the autumn months change into a spectacular array of scarlet, orange, gold, and ochre. See the best of nature’s display, whether you’re joining a guided tour, or exploring independently on foot—or on two wheels.

Lighthouses

Maine is home to more than 60 historic lighthouses along its coast. Some of these lovely lighthouses can be toured today, with a chance to explore the keeper’s quarters and learn about the role these beacons played, and still do. A solitary lighthouse on the rocky shore under Maine’s vast skies makes for a fantastic photo opportunity.

Featured Maine Cruise Ports

Pretty Portland has been a busy fishing port for more than 400 years. Wander the cobblestone lanes in the atmospheric downtown area. Once home to canneries and textile mills, today you’ll find a cluster of artisan coffee shops and tempting bakeries. Take in spectacular coastal views as you cycle the Eastern Promenade Trail, or take a day trip to the quaint little coastal town of Kennebunkport. If you’re captivated by Maine’s lonely lighthouses, join a tour to visit three of the most striking.

Artsy Rockland lies on a protected harbor surrounded by ruggedly beautiful scenery, from rocky coves to long beaches and dense woodland. In town, explore the Farnsworth Art Museum, celebrating local artists, and stroll the Rockland Harbor Trail on the lookout for seals and seabirds. Lobster lovers can join a tour on a local fishing boat to learn about age-old fishing techniques and modern sustainable practices. You’ll find lobster to eat everywhere, too, from high-end restaurants to food trucks.

Maine Cruise Itineraries

Sail along the New England coastline from Boston to Maine and beyond on an 11 or 12 night cruise. These fabulous itineraries include historic and vibrant North American ports such as Portland, Halifax, and Quebec City. You’ll also visit smaller ports such as Bar Harbor, Charlottetown, Rockland, and St. John on itineraries that sail between August and October.

Itineraries

Why cruise to maine with celebrity cruises.

Cruises to Maine with Celebrity bring you delightful experiences that will make your vacation special. Relax on the Rooftop Terrace in the late summer sunshine. Unwind in the Spa, or enjoy a picnic on the fragrant grass of the Lawn Club. Dine in beautiful restaurants on board where the menus have been created by our chef, then enjoy a Broadway-style show in a state-of-the-art theater.

On these incredible autumn itineraries to Maine, you can take in contemporary art and culture in the Portland Arts District, explore the rugged coastline on two wheels, and feast on fresh lobster in Rockport. No matter how you choose to spend your time on a Celebrity cruise, you're sure to create unforgettable memories.

Cruise Lines

Maine's impressive and vast coastline is best appreciated from the water – and aboard cruise ships, visitors can enjoy the scenic shore and visit Maine's seaside communities for a day of fun and adventure.

With cruises running from May through November and over 400 ships visiting the state each year, there is a perfect itinerary for all travelers. From majestic large cruise lines like Carnival and Royal Caribbean International , which anchor in the cities of Portland and Bar Harbor, to smaller cruise ships that can visit small coastal towns like Belfast, Camden, and Eastport, cruising in Maine provides a truly unique way to experience Vacationland.

Portland ME cruise port

Region East Coast USA and Canada New England

Local Time 2024-06-11 00:57

Port Portland ME cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Portland ME, Maine. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Portland is Maine's second largest cruise port - following Bar Harbor . This port city is located on a peninsula (Maine USA's east coast) and north of Boston MA . On the West Coast USA is the namesake Portland Oregon .

Portland ME features historical and architectural attractions, and is also a major commercial, shipping and fishing centre. The port is a gateway to the resort islands in Casco Bay. There's a historic trail and lighthouse in the town. The nearby Kennebunkport is also worth visiting. Its art colony and Seashore Trolley Museum display more than 200 authentic streetcars.

Established in 1632, the town was destroyed in 1676 by Indians, and again in 1690 by Indians and the French. The settlement (then part of Falmouth) was damaged by the British in 1775. In 1786, after being separated from Falmouth, it was named after Portland England .

In 2015, the visiting around 55,000 cruise tourists had an economic impact of USD 5,8 million. In 2016, the cruise port handled 70 ship calls. In August 2016, the port had its ever largest cruise ship docked -  RCI' s  Anthem of the Seas , bringing to the city 4974 passengers and 1480 crew. Cruising season 2016's economic impact was USD 11 million.

In 2017, the port reported a record year as the number of visiting cruise passengers for the first time ever exceeded 100,000. Port's statistics showed a 6% increase in passenger volumes and a 10% increase in crew numbers over 2016. In 2018, the port handled total 32 ship calls (23% over 2017) and around 39,000 passengers. For season 2019 were booked 40 berths.

On March 16, 2018, was announced a plan to fund the USD 2 million ferry terminal's upgrade project. The Ocean Gateway terminal serves all ferries connecting Maine USA with Nova Scotia (NS Canada). The primary funding party will be the Canadian company Bay Ferries Ltd (headquartered in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island ), which together with the NS government would pay for most of the upgrades. The decision was made after the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency threatened to close the terminal's customs service as it didn't meet USA's federal standards. Bay Ferries is a subsidiary of Northumberland Ferries Ltd (parent NFL Holdings Ltd) and is subsidized by the NS taxpayers.

Portland ME cruise terminal

Cruise ships in Portland ME dock at Portland Ocean Terminal. Following the berth extension and dredging project (completed in April 2017), now the port can dock ships with LOA length 340 m (1115 ft) and max draft 11 m (36 ft). Port's total berthing space is around 2000 m (6560 ft).

The city is linked by  ferries  with Nova Scotia. In November 2017, the ferry service from Ocean Gateway terminal was terminated after US Customs required a terminal renovation (around USD 7 million in upgrades) in order the passenger facility to meet federal standards. The ferry service Maine - Nova Scotia will start again only if Portland provides USD 2 million for the project.

The 27 best things to do in maine in 2024.

From beaches to Bean Boots, Maine has something for everyone.

The Best Things to Do in Maine

Portland Head Light in Portland, Maine, at sunset.

Getty Images

The Pine Tree State is first and foremost a nature lover's paradise. Close to 90% of Maine is forest land, including 32 state parks and Acadia National Park, its indisputable crown jewel. Maine also offers an impressive selection of top-notch restaurants, a bustling art scene and tons of family-friendly activities year round. Whether you're looking to ski down Sugarloaf Mountain, admire sculptures at the Farnsworth Art Museum or devour endless lobster rolls along the coast, a getaway to Maine promises a fun-filled trip that you won't soon forget. Read on for more details on the top things to do in Maine.

Acadia National Park

An autumn view from Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park in Maine.

Scenic Acadia National Park is a major draw for vacationers and Maine residents alike. One of the 10 most visited national parks in the country, Acadia draws 4 million visitors annually with its secluded beaches, rugged mountains, dense forests and craggy coastal views along the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can get their hearts pumping on close to 160 miles of hiking trails, the most popular of which include the Beehive Loop, the Jordan Pond loop, and the Cadillac Mountain North Ridge and South Ridge trails. Cadillac Mountain is a particularly popular spot for sunrise and sunset, as the highest point on the East Coast and the first place in the U.S. to see sunrise from early October to early March.

For a more secluded experience of Acadia National Park 's natural beauty, wander the west side of Mount Desert Island or take a ferry to Isle au Haut, where fewer tourists take the time to venture. In addition to hiking, visitors can bike, kayak, swim, bird-watch and stargaze in the park. When hunger strikes, head to Acadia's sole dining venue: the Jordan Pond House Restaurant. According to recent travelers, the eatery's signature popover bread and tea – permanent menu items since the 1890s – are not to be missed.

Portland skyline at dusk.

Portland has all the offerings of a quintessential Maine destination (outdoor activities and lobster rolls abound), but it also boasts noteworthy art, food and entertainment scenes. Must-dos on a Portland vacation include exploring the shops and restaurants that line the charming cobblestone streets of the Old Port district, strolling along the Eastern Promenade waterfront park, perusing the Portland Museum of Art and indulging in local beers on a brewery tour.

Traveler-approved hotels include the Portland Harbor Hotel and The Press Hotel, Autograph Collection , and world-class eateries like Duckfat, Eventide Oyster Co., Central Provisions and DiMillo's on the Water (a floating restaurant) are sure to impress. For an even cozier stay, check out the top bed-and-breakfasts in Portland .

Shop at the flagship L.L.Bean Store

Serena Folding | Courtesy of Visit Portland

Whether you've owned the signature Bean Boots your entire life or simply want to see what this Maine-made retailer is all about, a visit to L.L.Bean's flagship location is a must if you're in the charming town of Freeport (less than 20 miles northeast of Portland).

Opened in 1917, the multilevel venue attracts 3 million visitors annually. Snap a photo out front with the 16-foot all-weather boot replica before perusing the store's many outdoorsy departments, from apparel to camping to fishing supplies. The flagship location also features a 3,500-gallon aquarium and historical displays throughout the store, but what impressed previous visitors most is the huge selection of items. The best part? You can visit this L.L.Bean whenever your schedule allows, as it is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Address: 95 Main St., Freeport, ME 04032

Old Wooden store buildings on waterfront at Bar Harbor, Maine.

Considered the gateway to Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor is an excellent place to unwind and reset. Nature lovers will find endless ways to enjoy the outdoors in this Mount Desert Island town, including coastal walks along Frenchman Bay (a traveler favorite), as well as cultural experiences like downtown Bar Harbor's Abbe Museum. Sharing the history and culture of the Wabanaki, the Native people of Maine, this museum is the state's only Smithsonian Affiliate.

Foodies will be pleased in Bar Harbor, too: Fresh seafood is the destination's specialty, but its artisan ice cream shops, craft breweries and quaint breakfast cafes are also crowd-pleasers. When it's time to bed down, stay at the idyllic Balance Rock Inn , the luxurious Harborside Hotel, Spa & Marina (a seasonal property) or a local vacation rental. You also can't go wrong with one of Bar Harbor's best B&Bs .

Take a whale watching cruise

A Humpback whale breaches the surface at it's summer feeding grounds in the Gulf of Maine.

From May to October, animal lovers are in for a special treat. You can watch in wonder as majestic humpback, pilot, minke and finback whales feed and bask in the state's coastal waters. Whale watching hot spots include Bar Harbor, Boothbay Harbor, Portland and Kennebunkport.

Hop aboard a boat tour with a company like Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co. or Cap'n Fish's Cruises for the best vantage point – and don't forget to bring your camera, binoculars, sunscreen and layers of clothing, as temperatures can dip as you sail away from the mainland. Recent travelers recommended taking a cruise at sunset for the best views, though early morning tours provide some of the best natural lighting and calmest waters.

Cape Elizabeth and the Portland Head Light

The Portland Head Lighthouse in Maine, with dramatic rock formations overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

The quaint seaside town of Cape Elizabeth is a must-visit spot for anyone traveling to the Portland area. Its postcard-worthy crown jewel is the Portland Head Light – the oldest lighthouse in Maine. Located in scenic Fort Williams Park, the lighthouse dates back to the late 1700s and stands 80 feet tall.

When you're finished photographing the structure, head into the adjacent keepers' house museum (open seasonally) to learn more about the history of the lighthouse. Spend the rest of the day in Cape Elizabeth at Crescent Beach State Park or Two Lights State Park before heading back to Portland or bedding down at local accommodations, such as traveler-loved Inn by the Sea , which is pet-friendly .

The Marginal Way mile-long footpath along New England's Coast in the summer.

Ogunquit has all the makings of a relaxing getaway, complete with an old-fashioned trolley to help you explore the quaint town in summer. Spend your days sunbathing and swimming at the roughly 3-mile-long Ogunquit Beach or more secluded Footbridge Beach, or wander through the Ogunquit Museum of American Art (open seasonally) to admire more than 3,000 works.

Recent travelers praise the sights along Marginal Way, a 1.25-mile coastal walking path connecting Ogunquit Beach and Perkins Cove, which is a charming fishing village with shops and restaurants. Grab a lobster roll at Footbridge Lobster in Perkins Cove or indulge in American fare at nearby That Place in Ogunquit. Close out the perfect day with a show at Ogunquit Playhouse and a stay at luxurious Cliff House Maine just south of town.

Kennebunkport

Boats on water at Kennebunkport.

There are plenty of beach destinations to choose from in Maine, but Kennebunkport should be at the top of your list. Plan to spend your entire vacation on (or at least near) the water, whether you're fishing, sunbathing or sailing. Traveler-approved spots include Colony and Goose Rocks beaches, the small fishing village of Cape Porpoise, and Dock Square's boutique shops and galleries.

Visitors can grab fresh seafood at The Clam Shack or dine at the White Barn Inn Restaurant – a Forbes Five Star- and AAA Five Diamond-designated eatery. When it comes to lodging, take your pick of luxurious properties like Nathaniel Lord Mansion – one of the most charming B&Bs in the U.S. – or book one of the area's quaint inns and cottages.

Make a spooky stop at Stephen King's House

Although tours inside of the legendary horror novelist's spooky residence are not available and King lives elsewhere now, travelers still agree that a quick stop at Stephen King's house is a must when traveling through Bangor, Maine. From the outside, visitors can see (and take photos of) the red Victorian mansion's quirky features, from the spider- and dragon-adorned iron fence to the front yard's intricate wood sculpture, which was carved out of a dead tree and features an array of mystical creatures surrounding a bookcase.

Recent visitors say that the property is especially eerie in the fall, and many recommend signing up for a roughly three-hour excursion with SK Tours to learn more about locations where King has lived, worked and filmed some of his most iconic movies.

Monhegan Island

Main Street on remote Monhegan Island, Maine.

Past travelers agree that Monhegan Island – which is only accessible by boat – is a lovely place to spend a day. Located about 10 miles off the coast and home to only around 100 year-round residents, the unspoiled island features wildlands with 9 miles of cliffside hiking trails, a small village with shops and restaurants, a lighthouse, a brewery, and an art and history museum. A few inns and other lodging options dot the island, so you can stay overnight if you wish.

Visitors have a few different options to reach the island. One choice is an hourlong ferry ride from the mainland town of New Harbor between May and mid-October with Hardy Boat Cruises. Or, leave from Boothbay Harbor on a 90-minute ride with Balmy Day Cruises, which is in service from June to mid-October. Planning your trip at another time of year? No problem. Monhegan Boat Line also offers year-round ferry service to the island from Port Clyde.

As the largest botanical garden in New England, the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens are a sight to behold. Vacationers in Boothbay (about 60 miles northeast of Portland) had endless praise for the seasonally opened, well-maintained gardens, noting how beautiful and enjoyable the visit was for family members of all ages. You can explore 300-plus acres of colorful exhibits, including a dahlia garden, a butterfly house, a bee habitat, a meditation garden, several lawns and lush forest grounds with massive recycled-wood troll sculptures hidden among the trees.

Baxter State Park

Mount Katahdin catches the last rays of light on an autumn evening.

To embrace Maine's gorgeous natural spaces without the crowds of Acadia National Park, pay a visit to Baxter State Park. The roughly 210,000-acre park sits in the center of northern Maine near the town of Millinocket, around 70 miles north of Bangor. It is home to Maine's tallest mountain, Mount Katahdin, which towers about 5,270 feet tall.

The hike to the top of the mountain is strenuous (and not recommended for inexperienced climbers), but the fabulous views are worth the effort, according to past visitors. Still, travelers of all skill levels can embrace the outdoors by setting up a tent at one of 300-plus campsites and hiking through your choice of about 215 miles of trails. If you're lucky, you may see wildlife like moose and deer as you journey through the wilderness (just keep an eye out for bears too).

Maine is famous for its lobster – and it's home to some unique lobster-centric experiences. Try your hand at catching your own crustaceans with a cruise like Lucky Catch in Portland. Participate in hauling up a lobster trap or sit back and relax until it's time to take your catch to Portland Lobster Company to dine overlooking the harbor. Farther north in Boothbay Harbor, join Cabbage Island Clambakes for a traditional Downeast clambake, which includes fish chowder, two lobsters and much more. The tradition dates back to 1947 and takes place on private Cabbage Island, an hourlong boat ride from Boothbay Harbor.

If you're visiting Maine near the first weekend in August, head to Rockland (located about 85 miles southwest of Bar Harbor) with tens of thousands fellow attendees for the annual five-day Maine Lobster Festival. More than 20,000 pounds of delicious local lobster are brought in to feed the masses, and the festival features seafood cooking contests, live music, arts and crafts vendors, a parade, wine and beer tastings, 5K and 10K races, and more for patrons of all ages.

Sugarloaf Mountain

Located in Carrabassett Valley in western Maine, Sugarloaf Mountain is a year-round getaway for travelers looking to get active. In the warmer months, vacationers can hike, mountain bike, play disc golf and go zip lining. But visitors say Sugarloaf truly shines in the winter with its cold weather sports: It offers the only lift-serviced, above-treeline skiing in the eastern U.S. and is the largest ski area east of the Rocky Mountains. Snow lovers can participate in cross-country skiing on more than 30 miles of trails, as well as snowshoeing and ice skating.

After a full day of activity, get some rest at the on-site Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel, or rent out a condo or private home if you're traveling with a group.

Endless fun awaits at Funtown Splashtown USA. The appropriately named entertainment venue in Saco (less than 20 miles south of Portland) consists of two sections: a water park and an amusement park . Younger patrons will have their pick of tamer amusement park attractions as well, including a kiddie train, bumper boats and a classic carousel.

Meanwhile, on the wetter side of the park, travelers can zoom down the Poseidon's Plunge waterslide, splash in the lagoon and load the whole family onto a raft slide. Recent travelers said their children had a blast at the park. For those looking to avoid theme park prices on refreshments, outside food and nonalcoholic drinks are welcome in the park at picnic areas. After a fun-filled day, retire to The Beachwood in nearby Old Orchard Beach, which has direct beach access and amenities like barbecue facilities.

Moose outnumber people three to one in this secluded area, so what better place to go on a moose safari? Maine company plans to launch small satellites starting in 2025

Representatives for a Maine company that plans to send small satellites into space from the Northeast’s most rural state say they hope to start launches next year

PORTLAND, Maine -- Representatives for a Maine company that plans to send small satellites into space from the Northeast's most rural state said they will start launches next year.

Brunswick-based bluShift Aerospace hopes to turn Maine into a hub for the launching of commercial nanosatellites and has been making progress toward that goal for more than three years. A successful recent round of fundraising means commercial suborbital launch is on track to start in 2025, company officials said Tuesday.

The small satellite market currently relies on large companies, such as Elon Musk's SpaceX , for deployment of satellites, and that leads to long wait times, said bluShift CEO and founder Sascha Deri. Launching small satellites from Maine can change that, Deri said.

“We see an enormous need for dedicated, small-lift satellite deliveries to space,” Deri said, adding that customers are “seeking rapid, affordable access to space and direct delivery to their desired orbit.”

The company's progress on launching small satellites is happening during a time of tremendous growth in the industry, company representatives said.

The concept of small satellites was essentially an academic exercise two decades ago and the technology has since become one of the fastest growing in the satellite industry, bluShift representatives said. The worldwide market for a class of small satellites called CubeSats was valued at $210 million in 2021 and is expected to be worth more than four times that by 2030, the company said.

BluShift plans to use an existing spaceport for initial launches and begin using Maine's rural, remote Downeast coastline as a headquarters for launches as soon as 2026, company officials said. The company said it thinks the rural coast is a good location because it provides launch opportunities over the Atlantic Ocean directly into polar orbit with little interference.

The company launched a 20-foot (6-meter) prototype rocket to an altitude of more than 4,000 feet (1,219 meters) in its first test run in 2021. The rocket simulated a small payload by carrying stroopwafels, Dutch cookies.

BluShift also said Tuesday that Brady Brim-DeForest, managing partner at Late Stage Capital of Houston, will become chairman of the board of directors. Brim-DeForest said the company's use of nontoxic biofuel and reusable rockets will help with its mission of “democratizing access to orbit.”

'It's a necessity:' Small towns wait for broadband as Maine nears 2024 connection goal

by Dan Lampariello , CBS13 I-Team

Cable and phone lines in the town of Sweden, Maine (WGME){ }

SWEDEN (WGME) -- Two years after setting a goal of getting all Mainers who don't have access to broadband connected by the end of 2024, the state says it's closer than ever, though some small communities are still lagging behind.

"People think, 'Oh broadband internet, it's a convenience,'" Sweden Selectperson Kerry Welton said. "But really, it's a necessity."

Sweden, which has a population fewer than 400, is one of many small communities across Maine considered "unserved" by broadband as residents struggle to connect through outdated lines.

  • Also read: Lakes Region broadband expansion: $3.2M grant to connect 1,690 homes and businesses

Despite promises of upgrades in recent years, the town says progress has been as a slow as their internet speeds.

"It's been about two years of trying to work to get people to come in to give us options and to give us broadband," Welton said. "There's a lot of frustration, and nobody really knows if it's actually coming or not."

It was two years ago that the CBS13 I-Team first highlighted how slow speeds were impacting the way of life in the small Lakes Region community .

"In 2022, I didn't think it would be an issue," Sweden resident Kathi Shorey said. "When I'm talking about better internet, it's 10 megabits. I have three. Three!"

Since then, Shorey says a broadband company has connected a few people on her street. However, they remain the only ones in town who have access to higher speeds.

"We thought we were there, we won the lottery here," Shorey said. "But things are getting held up, so it's a little disappointing."

  • Also read: Affordable Connectivity Program ending; some service providers still offering help

During her State of the State address in 2022, Governor Janet Mills set the goal of connecting every Mainer who wants access to broadband with broadband by the end of this year.

"I pledge to you tonight that every person in Maine who wants to connect to high speed internet will be able to do so by 2024, just two short years from now," Mills said.

While there's been progress on that promise since, data from the state shows 4% of locations in Maine remain unserved while another 1% don't have access to an internet connection at all.

"We really want to prioritize getting those folks a connection now, understanding that there's an immediate need for it," Brian Allenby with the Maine Connectivity Authority said. "At the end of the day, it's our collective job to ensure that everyone across the state gets served."

The Maine Connectivity Authority (MCA) is a quasi-government agency tasked with meeting the Governor's goal by planning, developing and investing in broadband infrastructure across the state.

"We've invested about $140 million of state and federal funding to build out broadband projects. That's been combined with another $80 million in private and community investment," Allenby said. "More than 70,000 homes and businesses now have a funded connection in Maine."

But with about 28,000 locations still unserved by broadband and another 5,000 to 7,000 locations with no internet connection, can the governor's goal still be achieved by the end of this year?

"We're on track to meet that goal, to ensure that the 1 percent of locations that don't have any access to any sort of technology have access, they at least have an option for connectivity," Allenby said. "I think it's also really important to remember and to identify just because we're on track to accomplish that goal, that's not the end of the work. There's still so much more to come."

For unserved communities like Sweden, those next steps can't come soon enough.

"From my point of view, we wonder if it really panned out the way that they intended," Welton said. "The larger underserved towns seem to be a step ahead of us."

It's not for a lack of trying. Sweden joined Eastern Slopes Regional Broadband , a coalition of a number of towns in the MSAD 72 school district, to better its chances of bringing high-speed internet to the area.

The town is also currently in negotiations with Spectrum on a franchise agreement that should allow for the introduction of faster internet, but that's going to take time and the town would still like to see more options.

"As a small community, we want to be competitive with some of these others," Welton said.

The Alternative to Huge Cruises? 3 Masts, 28 Sails and Wind Power.

We checked out the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit on a Mediterranean cruise. In this era of gargantuan ships, its elegant clipper design, wooden decks and relatively small size stands out.

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

From the bridge of the three-masted windjammer, the Sea Cloud Spirit , the captain called out the words we’d all been waiting for.

“Let’s set the sails!” he cried, after turning off the engines, while maneuvering to maintain an optimum angle for his 18 deckhands to climb into the shrouds and unfurl the ship’s 44,132 square feet of sails by hand.

Like acrobats, the crew scurried up the masts to the upper topgallant sails that rose nearly 200 feet above us. The ship’s captain, Vukota Stojanovic, later insisted that none of it was for show. “Whenever there is an opportunity to sail, we sail,” he said.

For the next hour, the crew hauled the ropes until the 28 sails were billowing in the wind, propelling the 452-foot-long ship — the world’s largest passenger sailing vessel on which the sails are raised by hand — toward its first port of call, Portofino, Italy.

At a time when cruise lines are packing their ever-more-gargantuan ships with water parks and basketball courts, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, with its old-fashioned clipper design and wooden decks, stands out. It is the newest ship from the Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises , and while it is the company’s biggest, Sea Cloud said it wanted to leave space for passengers to connect to the surrounding elements.

“Wherever you are on the ship, it feels like you are sitting on the water,” said Amelia Dominick, 71, a retired real estate agent from Cologne, Germany, who was on her third cruise onboard the Sea Cloud Spirit.

I had arrived for a four-night “taster sailing” from Nice, France, to the Ligurian region of Italy, designed to entice passengers to sign up for a longer cruise. Here’s what I found.

The ship and cabins

The Spirit has many comforts and luxuries, including a fitness center, library, hair salon and a spa with a Finnish sauna that overlooks the sea. The deck layouts are spacious, with nooks carved out for privacy and relaxation.

Sixty-nine spacious cabins have windows that open onto the sea. My room, a junior suite on the third deck, had two large arched windows, mahogany tables, a balcony and a comfortable couch and armchair. The marble bathroom was lavish, with a gold-plated sink and large jetted bathtub.

The elegant interior design is inspired by the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 for Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress of the General Foods Corporation, with glossy wooden panels and gold trimmings. The Sea Cloud was the largest private sailing yacht in the world before Post handed it over to the U.S. Navy for use as a weather-reporting vessel during World War II. The four-mast, 64-passenger ship has since been restored to its former glory and will sail across the Aegean and Adriatic this summer.

The experience felt authentic — even before the sails were set — with a detailed safety drill. On most cruises, the drill entails a safety video and signing in at an assembly point. But here, passengers put on their life jackets and walked through emergency scenarios that included rationing food supplies and fishing from the lifeboat.

Each day, the sails were set, even during heavy rain and wind speeds over 30 knots. Guests wanting to participate in the rigging are usually invited to do so, but the weather conditions made it too risky for this sailing.

“It was amazing to watch the work go into putting the sails up and down and to experience the wind power pulling the ship so fast without the engines,” said Malte Rahnenfuehrer, a 50-year-old psychologist from Zurich, who was traveling with his partner and two children.

A man with dark hair wears navy blue and white clothing as the captain of a large windjammer sailing vessel. He stands on deck, a walkie-talkie-like device in his hand, beneath the ropes and riggings of the vessel's sails.

The captain

It is rare for cruise passengers to see the ship’s captain after the initial welcome drinks or gala dinner. But Capt. Vukota Stojanovic was omnipresent throughout the cruise, from setting sails to lifeguarding to mingling with guests.

Originally from Montenegro, Captain Stojanovic piloted container ships for years. When he was asked to consider helming the original Sea Cloud nearly 10 years ago, he hesitated because he had no experience sailing. Even after he learned the ropes — and there are 340 ropes (known as running rigging) on the vessel — he was unsure. “I grew to love the sailings, the boats, the crew the lifestyle, but I still felt I belonged on container ships,” he said. “It would be a big adjustment, especially because I would have to shave every day,” he joked.

Eventually, he accepted the opportunity and worked tirelessly to learn how to sail and operate the ship. Today, he keeps an “open bridge” policy, allowing passengers to visit the control room, even when he is wrestling with the wind.

“The crew and the passengers are all part of the experience, and I like to meet people and receive their feedback,” Captain Stojanovic said.

Environment

Sea Cloud Cruises aspires to take a “gentle” approach, using wind power to drive its ships wherever possible, even if that means changing course for optimal weather conditions. When sailing is not possible, the Spirit has two diesel-electric engines that run on low-sulfur marine diesel fuel. The company is also working with ports that have shore power capabilities to plug into the local electric power.

Onboard, there is an emphasis on reusable bottles and paper straws, and crew members separate solid waste to be compacted and removed when in port.

Excursions and Activities

We made stops in Portofino, San Remo, Italy, and St.-Tropez, France, anchoring offshore and getting to land by tender — a contrast to the big cruise ships with their loud horns and thick plumes of exhaust spewing from their funnels.

For passengers wanting to take a dip (there is no pool), the crew marked an area in the water with floats and an inflatable slide. The water was frigid, but many passengers took the plunge from the swimming deck. Guests could also take “Zodiac Safaris” around the ship to get views of the vessel from the water.

Excursions ranged from food and wine tours to e-biking and beach trips. In Portofino, passengers were free to explore the sights independently, including the Castello Brown Fortress and the lighthouse on Punta del Capo rock. There was ample time to eat meals on shore as the ship did not depart until 11 p.m. Over the summer, the Sea Cloud Spirit will sail to Spain, Portugal, France and the Azores, among other destinations. On Nov. 11, she will depart for St. Maarten in the Caribbean for the winter.

Wherever the vessel goes, said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruise for North America, the company tries to “stay away from the crowds and ports where big cruise ships spit out 6,000 passengers.”

Summer prices, which include food and beverages, range from $3,995 for a four-night sailing in a superior cabin to $9,420 for a veranda suite. Seven-night sailings cost between $6,995 and $16,495.

LEWISTON, Maine — State Rep. Mike Soboleski was heading out in his pickup truck Thursday after touring the Casella recycling facility on the city’s outskirts when he noticed several employees clustered together during a midday break in the parking lot.

Soboleski stopped his truck, got out and walked over to shake hands and introduce himself as a Republican candidate in Tuesday’s 2nd Congressional District primary .

Fellow freshman state Rep. Austin Theriault, the other candidate seeking the chance to face Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Golden, is spending Saturday about 280 miles away at Spud Speedway in Caribou, where Theriault raced before rising to NASCAR. He planned to talk with and help register voters during the inaugural MudBowl  featuring various truck shows.

A recycling facility and a muddy racetrack may not be the prototypical places for candidates to visit in the final days of a primary, but each spot offered chances for two freshman state lawmakers who have never sought higher office to chat one-on-one with voters. The November race in the swing 2nd District will be one of the biggest House races in the country.

Those interactions could make a difference on Tuesday, especially with name recognition not high for either candidate outside of political and auto racing circles. In interviews, supporters of Theriault and Soboleski highlighted how personal ties were driving their preferences.

Yet the candidates look to be competing for a small pool of voters. Interest is looking low in next week’s elections. Just over 3,900 Republicans in the 2nd District requested absentee ballots as of 3 p.m. Friday, 800 fewer than the March presidential primaries.

Theriault, a 30-year-old from Fort Kent, has former President Donald Trump’s endorsement and has raised roughly 10 times as much money  as Soboleski, a 67-year-old Marine veteran from Phillips whose varied resume includes time as an actor, business owner and car salesman. Theriault’s side has flexed those factors in the form of many mailers and advertisements.

But conversations with supporters showed personal factors playing a larger role than the differences Soboleski and Theriault have tried to highlight between one another in, a Democrat from Lewiston who first won election in 2018 and has beaten past GOP challengers in a district Trump twice carried.

“We can’t look at the money,” said Bonnibelle Pratt, 69, who lives in the Aroostook County town of Oakfield and supports Soboleski. “We’ve got to look at the man.”

Pratt said “military people” like Soboleski “have a discipline about them.” She knows Theriault and his campaign manager and expressed disappointment over them attacking  Soboleski over tax issues from the 1990s . She also dismissed Trump’s endorsement by saying the former president does not truly know either candidate or their attributes.

Mitch Green, a technical school teacher from the town of Norway who previously owned a company that built race cars, helped Theriault during his early racing career and focused more on his personality rather than any concerns with Soboleski or even Golden. Theriault is sincere and owned up to mistakes he made while racing, Green said.

“Once he starts a project, he will not give up,” he said. “The kid is tireless.”

As part of visiting several businesses in the Lewiston-Auburn area Thursday with Rep. Reagan Paul, R-Winterport, and a campaign aide who took photos, Soboleski stood inside a Casella facility where recyclables are sorted, baled and then shipped to manufacturers and other users.

He reiterated he would first “get the lay of the land” if elected to Congress and work with sitting members while proposing legislation tied to veterans and violent crime , rather than what he described as Theriault’s “BS of ‘I’m going to save the world’” and “build the wall.”

Theriault has doubled down  on his border-related goals, writing in a Bangor Daily News op-ed  that “we should immediately seal up the border and vote out politicians who disagree.”

Soboleski, endorsed  by dozens of current and former state lawmakers, also emphasized his status as a military veteran will help win over Republican and independent veterans who have previously supported a Marine veteran in Golden.

But Theriault, with state lawmaker endorsements of his own, had a response while campaigning Thursday around Augusta — an endorsement  from Army veteran Travis Mills, a quadruple amputee from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars who has become a best-selling author and runs a foundation that assists injured veterans.

Awareness of either candidate was less apparent among residents stopping for a bite to eat or gas in conservative-leaning Androscoggin County towns near the southern edge of the district, such as Mechanic Falls, Minot and Durham. Signs for eggs for sale, not political candidates, are more common on rural roads.

Inside the Durham Get & Go convenience store that is often the busiest spot and main takeout food option in the Androscoggin County town, a worker had nothing to say about Soboleski or Theriault while briefly mentioning concerns with Golden.

Other colleagues, she said, seemed unlikely to vote Tuesday.
