Pre-existing condition exclusions – Emergency Medical

Rate category determines the duration of the pre-existing condition exclusion  and is based on age, medical history and plan type.

Travel Insurance will not cover any expenses relating to the following:

Pre-existing medical condition that was not stable in the time period before the  effective date of your insurance;

Heart condition if, in the time period before the effective date of coverage, any heart condition has not been stable or required any form of nitroglycerine for  the relief of angina pain;

Lung condition if, in the time period before the effective date of coverage, any lung condition has not been stable or has required treatment with oxygen or Prednisone for the lung condition.

Note : For the Travel Canada Emergency Medical plan, no pre-existing condition exclusion applies.

Pre-Existing Condition means a medical condition that existed before your  effective date.

Medical Condition means any disease, sickness or injury (including symptoms of  undiagnosed conditions).

A medical condition is considered stable when all of the following statements  are true:

  • there has not been any new treatment prescribed or recommended, or change(s) to existing treatment (including a stoppage in treatment), and
  • there has not been any change in medication, or any recommendation or starting of a new prescription drug, and
  • the medical condition has not become worse, and
  • there have not been any new, more frequent or more severe symptoms, and
  • there has been no hospitalization or referral to a specialist, and
  • there have not been any tests, investigation or treatment recommended, but not yet complete, nor any outstanding test results, and
  • there is no planned or pending treatment.

All of the above conditions must be met for a medical condition to be  considered stable.

Change in Medication means the medication dosage, frequency or type has been reduced, increased, stopped and/or new medication(s) has/have been  prescribed.

Exceptions: the routine adjustment of Coumadin, warfarin or insulin (as long as  they are not newly prescribed or stopped) and there has been no change in your medical condition; and, a change from a brand name medication to a generic brand medication of the same dosage.

Treatment means hospitalization, a procedure prescribed, performed or recommended by a physician for a medical condition. This includes but is not limited to prescribed medication, investigative testing and surgery.

Important: Any reference to testing, tests, test results, or investigations excludes genetic tests. “Genetic test” means a test that analyzes DNA, RNA or chromosomes for purposes such as the prediction of disease or vertical transmission risks, or monitoring, diagnosis or prognosis.

Buying travel insurance is a smart move for any type of trip, but you may not need a policy that covers everything under the sun. If you don't need coverage for trip cancellations or delays because you're relying on your travel credit card to offer these protections, for example, you may find you only need emergency medical coverage that works away from home.

Still, travel medical coverage varies widely based on included benefits, policy limits and more. If you're comparing travel insurance plans and hoping to find the best option for unexpected medical expenses, read on to learn which policies we recommend.

Frequently Asked Questions

The term travel insurance usually describes a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes coverage for medical expenses as well as trip cancellations and interruptions, trip delays, lost baggage, and more. Meanwhile, travel medical insurance is coverage that focuses on paying for emergency medical expenses and other related care.

Travelers need international health insurance if they're visiting a place where their own health coverage will not apply. This typically includes all international trips away from home since U.S. health plans limit coverage to care required in the United States.

Note that if you don't have travel health insurance and you become sick or injured abroad, you'll be responsible for paying back any health care costs you incur.

Many travel insurance policies cover emergency medical expenses you incur during a covered trip. However, the included benefits of each policy can vary widely, and so can the policy limits that apply.

If you're looking for a travel insurance policy that offers sufficient protection for unexpected medical expenses, you'll typically want to choose a plan with at least $100,000 in coverage for emergency medical care and at least that much in protection for emergency medical evacuation and transportation.

However, higher limits can provide even more protection from overseas medical bills, which can become pricey depending on the type of care you need. As just one example, Allianz says the average cost of emergency medical evacuation can easily reach up to $200,000 or more depending on where you’re traveling.

Your U.S. health insurance policy almost never covers medical expenses incurred abroad. The same is true for most people on Medicare and especially Medicaid. If you want to ensure you have travel medical coverage that applies overseas, you should purchase a travel insurance plan with adequate limits for every trip. Read the U.S. News article on this topic for more information.

The cost of travel medical insurance can vary depending on the age of the travelers, the type of coverage purchased, the length of the trip and other factors. You can use a comparison site like TravelInsurance.com to explore different travel medical insurance plans and their cost.

What Is Travel Medical Insurance?

International travel medical insurance is a type of insurance that can help cover the cost of medical care abroad. If you’re on vacation and suffer a sudden injury or illness, you may need to receive care from a local facility, which your domestic health insurance might not cover. Depending on your location, you might even require transportation to a more advanced facility via Helivac or other specialized medical transport.

Without travel medical insurance, coverage is up to the discretion of your health insurance provider. If not covered, you could accrue thousands of dollars in medical bills by the time you return home, especially if you need emergency medical evacuation services. If you have a travel insurance plan with medical coverage, your insurance provider will cover certain expenses up to your coverage maximum.

Travel medical insurance is sold as a part of a larger travel insurance plan or as stand-alone coverage. When bundled with standard travel insurance, you’ll gain benefits like compensation for delayed baggage and nonrefundable trip costs if you’re forced to go home early. Most plans also include 24/7 assistance services that can help you communicate with local medical staff and arrange care payments.

Travel medical coverage is worth considering if your domestic health insurance does not extend to injuries and illnesses sustained abroad. For example, a private health insurance plan might provide coverage overseas, but Medicaid usually won’t . Consider a limited travel medical plan that provides secondary coverage if your health insurance has a higher deductible or out-of-pocket maximum. Like other types of travel insurance, travel medical coverage works on a reimbursement-based model — so it is important to keep documentation of all medical expenses you incur while on your trip.

Travel Medical Insurance vs Travel Insurance

A medical-only travel insurance policy provides a limited range of benefits that can help cover the costs of emergency medical bills incurred while traveling.

Medical-only policies are typically more affordable than full travel insurance but will not provide trip delay and interruption benefits. For example, if you get sick on vacation and must go home, medical-only insurance will not compensate you for nonrefundable flights or hotel costs.

The table below summarizes the types of coverage you can expect from travel medical insurance policies versus a complete travel insurance plan.

The coronavirus pandemic shifted how most people travel worldwide, and travel insurance companies now typically include COVID-19 coverage within plans . Most reputable travel medical insurance companies list COVID-19 as a covered reason for medical coverage. If you are worried about the virus while traveling, we recommend reading your provider’s sample policy to ensure COVID-19 coverage is eligible for reimbursement.

What Does Travel Health Insurance Cover?

Travel medical insurance, also known as travel health insurance, is designed to cover various medical expenses incurred during your travels. Just as standard health insurance covers emergencies at home, travel medical coverage helps pay for hospital stays or healthcare expenses if you get hurt while traveling. However, most travel medical plans also include additional benefits beyond coverage for hospital bills.

Policies often have emergency medical evacuation coverage, which covers the cost of evacuation if you get hurt in a location without readily available medical care. Medical transport can become expensive, often costing tens of thousands of dollars , so this coverage can help keep you from paying out-of-pocket for life-saving services. Coverage may also include benefits for AD&D and repatriation of remains if you pass away abroad.

Also, pay attention to coverage levels and any deductibles when selecting a travel medical plan. Every travel medical plan should include a maximum amount your insurer should pay in the event of an accident, with some policy providers limiting coverage to as low as $5,000. Evaluate included coverages and limitations compared to policy pricing to ensure you’re getting a value for what you pay.

Most travel insurance plans state that the provider will not cover medical bills originating from a sporting injury. If you intend on backpacking, hiking, skiing or participating in another outdoor activity, look for an insurance provider offering a sports extension or add-on. The adventure sports add-on available from most travel insurance providers extends your medical benefits to include recreational accidents.

What To Know About Coverage Maximums, Exclusions and Deductibles

Understanding coverage maximums, exclusions, and deductibles is essential when purchasing a travel medical insurance plan. A coverage maximum is the most an insurer will pay for benefits such as emergency medical expenses. Exclusions include situations and procedures not covered under your travel medical policy. If your plan includes a deductible, it works like a domestic health insurance plan — you need to pay the deductible amount out-of-pocket before your insurance plan takes effect.

Who Needs Travel Medical Insurance?

Some travelers may benefit more from travel medical insurance than others. If you have a pre-existing health condition, for example, you may need medical services or assistance abroad. You may also consider coverage if you plan on participating in extreme or adventure sports such as bungee jumping, windsurfing, or scuba diving. While some companies exclude extreme sport-related injuries from coverage, others offer add-on protection. For this reason, it is important to check coverage exclusions associated with a travel medical insurance plan before purchase.

Other types of travelers who could benefit from a travel medical insurance policy include jet-setters with a credit card that offers coverage for travel delays or trip interruptions, as there’s no need to purchase a full trip insurance policy in this case. Travel medical insurance may also benefit those strictly concerned about covering potential health expenses abroad, not trip expenses.

When Is Travel Health Insurance Required?

When you travel outside your home country, travel medical insurance may be required or strongly recommended. Many countries, particularly those in the Schengen Area of Europe , require travelers to have sufficient travel insurance before issuing a visa or allowing entry. This became an especially prominent issue during the COVID-19 pandemic when more and more countries outside of Europe began requiring Americans to carry medical insurance as a condition of travel.

To verify whether travel health insurance is required where you’re traveling, research your destination using the U.S. Department of State website . The Department of State maintains a list of entry requirements for U.S. passport holders and permanent residents. Travel experts recommend shopping for coverage at least one month before your trip to ensure the documentation arrives before you travel.

Depending on entry requirements and your current health insurance provider, your primary health insurance may qualify as sufficient medical coverage for a visa entry. Even if travel medical insurance is not required, you may still choose to invest in some level of coverage. Even with standard health insurance, you might not have any or enough coverage when you travel abroad — meaning even a minor injury could leave you with thousands of dollars in bills when you get home.

How Pre-Existing Conditions Affect International Health Insurance

Some travelers deal with pre-existing health conditions that could impact their travels. Life-long conditions such as asthma and diabetes to a more recent temporary diagnosis can affect your international health insurance coverage.

A few providers will not offer travel medical insurance to people with pre-existing conditions to avoid responsibility for travelers with a greater risk of medical needs overseas. Most other companies ask you to sign a waiver before agreeing to cover potential medical bills related to recent or ongoing health issues. This waiver typically requires proof that you’re medically able to travel, so expect to provide a letter from your physician stating so.

Angela Borden, a product marketing specialist at Seven Corners , encourages travelers with pre-existing conditions to “contact your insurance provider to be sure you fully understand the pre-existing conditions coverage for the plan you choose. Being prepared and having the information before you need it in an emergency makes a huge difference.” Borden also noted, “There may be a requirement for when you receive treatment for your pre-existing conditions. For example, some Seven Corners travel medical plans require you to receive immediate emergency care within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms for that treatment to be covered.”

We encourage you to read through your policy’s fine print to fully understand any requirements for travel coverage with pre-existing conditions. This way, you can enjoy your trip with peace of mind.

Types of Travel Medical Insurance Plans

When searching for travel health insurance plans, you may encounter primary, secondary, single-trip, and multi-trip insurance policies. In the sections below, we will explore each of these and detail which policies are best for specific travelers.

Primary vs. Secondary Health Insurance

Some travel medical insurance providers offer both primary and secondary health insurance plans. Primary plans pay for medical expenses before any other coverage you might have. This is especially useful for travelers whose primary plans only cover medical care domestically.

However, if you already have health insurance that extends abroad, consider a secondary travel medical insurance plan. This plan requires your existing health policy to pay first. Once you’ve hit your limits through your primary insurer, a secondary plan should cover the rest.

Do I Need U.S. Health Insurance To Qualify for International Travel Health Insurance?

You do not need U.S.-based health insurance to obtain certain international travel health insurance policies, such as most single-trip plans. However, note that domestic health insurance typically does not cover medical expenses abroad . However, some providers, such as HTH Worldwide , have separate policies available to travelers with and without a primary health plan.

If you do not have U.S. health insurance, we recommend purchasing a primary travel medical insurance plan. We also recommend considering primary travel medical insurance if your standard health insurance lacks international coverage.

Single-Trip vs. Annual Travel Medical Insurance

If you’re a frequent traveler and plan on taking multiple trips per year, you might consider annual travel medical insurance over a single-trip plan. Single-trip coverage only covers you for one trip. This trip could involve multiple destinations, such as traveling through various European countries over a few weeks. However, your coverage ends once you return home.

Annual travel insurance, also known as a multi-trip policy, typically covers policyholders planning to take several trips back-to-back, with coverage usually lasting up to a year. If you travel often, this coverage offers a cheaper and more ideal alternative to purchasing multiple single-trip policies.

Note that your rates and coverage will vary based on your travel needs, so we recommend comparing quotes from multiple providers and deciding what’s most important to you in a travel medical insurance plan.

Health Insurance for Expats

If you plan to live and work abroad for more than a year, you may consider health insurance for expats over a standard travel insurance plan. These plans can provide long-term coverage for individuals and family members living overseas, and you can renew coverage annually for as long as you’re abroad.

However, travel medical insurance policies can provide additional protection not typically found through a standard international health insurance plan, such as emergency medical evacuation and repatriation coverage. If you’re an expat who plans to travel between countries often, then a long-term travel insurance plan that covers trip interruption or baggage loss along with medical emergencies may be ideal.

How Much Does Travel Medical Insurance Cost?

Insurers sell medical travel insurance as a package alongside other travel insurance protections, including trip cancellation and emergency evacuation insurance. When you purchase travel medical insurance as a part of a travel insurance package, expect to pay between 5% and 6% of your total trip cost in coverage.

The table below breaks down the average cost of the plans with the highest medical expense maximum from each listed travel insurance provider.

* Medical coverage is secondary to primary health insurance. Contact your travel insurance provider to learn more.

Factors That Affect the Cost of Travel Medical Insurance

Understanding what travel medical insurance companies evaluate when pricing policies can help you get the most out of your coverage. The following are the biggest factors that influence travel insurance prices :

How To Purchase International Travel Health Insurance

Purchasing a travel health insurance plan is fairly straightforward across most providers, based on our experience. If you already know what you’re most concerned about regarding coverage, you can purchase a plan quickly by following the steps below, which we’ve outlined using IMG’s quote process.

  • Find travel medical insurance offerings: Most providers make it easy for you to navigate available plan options. IMG breaks down its coverage online by type of insurance, with its travel medical insurance front and center on its drop-down menu.

  • Choose a plan: IMG lists its most popular travel medical plans first, with additional plans located toward the bottom of the webpage. Each plan either has a description of travelers it would suit best or plan highlights. You can also download plan brochures and browse through plan details to help make your decision easier.

  • Provide your trip information: Travel medical insurance companies need your trip information to provide you with a quote. Companies will ask questions about your travel dates, destinations, total trip cost, number of travelers and more.

  • Compare plans: We recommend comparing quotes from multiple providers for similar levels of coverage before deciding on a travel medical policy. Some providers, such as IMG, also allow you to compare plans against each other, which can be helpful in the decision-making process.

single trip emergency medical

  • Complete your purchase: Once you’ve decided on a plan, you may have to fill in some additional information to buy a policy, such as your home address, first trip payment date and more. Companies may also ask whether you’d like to purchase additional add-ons with your policy. You’ll then provide a form of payment and complete your purchase.

While this guide details IMG’s purchasing process, most travel medical insurance providers follow a similar process. Be sure to have your trip and traveler information on hand before beginning the buying process.

The Best Travel Medical Insurance Plans for 2024

Compare our top-rated travel insurers with medical coverage below:

Faye

While Faye only offers one general travel insurance plan with high medical coverage limits of up to $250,000, more than other competitors we reviewed. The company also offers the option to add up to $250,000 in adventure and extreme sports coverage. Also, as long as you purchase coverage within 14 days of your initial deposit and are medically able to travel, Faye will cover some pre-existing medical conditions. We found the average cost of a Faye travel insurance plan is $298.

  • Pre-existing conditions coverage: Yes
  • Medical deductible: Not applicable
  • COVID-19 coverage: Yes (included under medical coverage)

International Medical Group

International Medical Group

IMG is another one of our top picks for travel medical insurance. It offers a wide variety of medical coverage that caters to many travelers, with limits that go above and beyond other options if you purchase one of its highest-tier plans. The average cost of an IMG Travel Insurance plan is $217. However, it’s worth noting that our team found IMG was more expensive when choosing the highest medical coverage limits offered.

  • Pre-existing condition coverage: Includes emergency care if a pre-existing condition becomes life-threatening or requires immediate treatment
  • Medical deductible: $0–$25,000, depending on the plan.

Travelex

We chose Travelex as one of our top travel medical insurance providers primarily for its low-priced, affordable coverage. Its travel insurance plans offer up to $50,000 in medical coverage, and you can purchase an adventure sports upgrade if you plan on participating in such activities. However, we found its Travel Med policy — which may benefit spontaneous travelers and is available to purchase the day of your departure. However, this coverage is not available to travelers residing in Pennsylvania.

  • Pre-existing condition coverage: Available with a pre-existing condition exclusion waiver if you meet certain criteria
  • Medical deductible: Not available for primary coverage plans

AIG Travel Guard

AIG Travel Guard

AIG Travel Guard’s standard plans offer high limits for emergency medical coverage and medical evacuation, along with trip interruption, baggage, and cancellation coverage. It also offers a plan known as Medevac that provides travel medical and evacuation insurance for trips lasting up to a year. Based on our research, the Medevac plan offers high limits for evacuation of up to $5 million, much more than many other insurers we reviewed.

  • Pre-existing conditions coverage: Available with a waiver if you meet certain criteria

Why Trust Us?

How we ranked international health insurance providers.

When ranking international health insurance providers, we considered benefits that include emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation, pre-existing conditions and COVID-19 coverage. We also examined each company’s standard travel insurance plans and standalone medical coverage policies. Some providers offer higher medical limits through standard travel insurance policies versus others with standalone medical plans, which could appeal to travelers looking for medical coverage only.

How We Rate Travel Insurance Companies

Our team surveyed dozens of travel insurance providers and created a scoring system to judge each company based on coverage, quality and service. We also collected sample quotes from each company, both over the phone and on the Internet, to simulate an authentic customer experience. Here are the factors we take into consideration when rating providers:

  • Cost (10%) : We obtained quotes for seven trips with varying destinations, number of travelers, traveler ages and trip costs. Travel insurance companies at or below our calculated average cost of $221 earn full points in this category
  • Plan availability (10%) : We look for insurers that offer a variety of travel insurance plans and can customize a policy with coverage upgrades.
  • Coverage details (29%) : A provider with robust coverage earns full points, including baggage delay and loss, COVID-19 coverage, emergency evacuation and medical coverage, trip delay and cancellation coverage, and more.
  • Coverage times and amounts (34%) : Companies that offer customers reimbursement after fewer than 12 hours of delays earn full points in this category. We also reward travel insurance providers that cover more than 100% of trip costs in the event of cancellations or interruptions.
  • Company service and reviews (17%) : We look for indicators that a company is well-prepared to respond to customer needs. Companies with an established global resource network, 24/7 emergency hotline, mobile app, multiple ways to file a claim and concierge services score higher in this category. We assess reputation by evaluating consumer reviews, third-party financial strength and customer experience ratings, specifically from AM Best and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

How To Use Travel Medical Insurance

Say you’re taking a three-week trip to Germany . During your trip, your appendix bursts, requiring emergency medical care and surgery. If you have a travel medical insurance plan that provides $50,000 in emergency medical coverage, your insurer will cover up to that amount. If your medical bills extend beyond your purchased coverage limits, you must pay the rest out-of-pocket.

Suppose you suffer a medical emergency abroad in a remote location and require an airlift or transportation to a facility that can provide adequate medical care. A travel medical insurance policy would cover your expenses up to the maximum coverage amount, and you would pay the remaining balance.

Is Travel Health Insurance Worth It?

Travel health insurance is worth considering if you’re concerned about a medical emergency abroad. It offers worthwhile protection for medical emergencies and evacuations and can provide peace of mind. Many providers also offer pre-existing health condition waivers and policies that cover extreme or adventure sports, allowing different travelers to purchase a plan that fits their needs.

Borden, quoted earlier, encourages travelers to start by figuring out what their domestic health insurance does and does not cover when traveling. “Depending on the plan, you might not have any coverage out of the country,” she said. “Even if you do, it could be only for emergencies, and your health insurance company’s definition of an emergency might not be the same as yours.”

Before you purchase travel medical insurance, we recommend you get quotes from at least three providers to compare costs and coverage limits. Also, read sample policies to familiarize yourself with coverage exclusions, and do not hesitate to contact a travel insurance agent with any questions.

Frequently Asked Questions Travel Medical Insurance

A security coverage limit is the amount a travel medical insurance plan will cover should you need to evacuate your destination due to political unrest, threats toward your well-being, war or natural disasters. Covered expenses include lodging, meals and transportation.

Does travel medical insurance cover visits to multiple countries?

Yes, travel medical insurance plans cover visits to multiple countries, so long as you specify which countries you will visit during the sign-up process.

Top 5 questions about travel insurance

When you travel outside your home province or territory, even if you're still in Canada, there are limits on how much your government health insurance plan will pay. Costs that may not be covered include air and ground ambulance, emergency dental treatment and prescription drug expenses. Travel insurance can help with these costs, so it makes sense to have it whether you're visiting another part of Canada or another part of the world.

We can top up travel insurance offered by another insurer, adding extra days to your current coverage. You are responsible for ensuring that your current coverage is in force and allows top-ups. Your top-up coverage is subject to CoverMe ® Travel Insurance's terms and conditions.

For single-trip plans, you can add extra days of coverage while you're travelling provided that there has been:

  • No event that has resulted or may result in a claim against the policy, and
  • No change in your health status

You must call 1-800-268-3763 before your coverage expires and pay the appropriate premium.

For multi-trip plans, it's best to add extra days of coverage before you leave home. Simply get a top-up up to the maximum allowed by your government health insurance plan. If you need to add extra days of coverage while you're travelling, call 1-800-268-3763 and we will do our best to help you.

How far in advance before my trip can I buy your travel insurance plans?

how much emergency medical travel insurance do i need

What is emergency medical travel insurance?

If you’re wondering, does travel insurance cover medical emergency – the short answer is yes. Emergency medical travel insurance is a specialized type of travel insurance that provides coverage for unforeseen medical emergencies that may occur while traveling abroad. Unlike regular travel insurance, which typically covers trip cancellations, lost baggage, or flight delays, emergency medical travel insurance is basically travel insurance for medical emergencies and focuses specifically on medical expenses and assistance during your journey.

Why is medical emergency travel insurance important?

Healthcare systems and costs can vary significantly from one country to another. If you experience a sudden illness, injury, or any medical emergency away from home, emergency medical travel insurance can provide you with financial protection and peace of mind.

What does it cover?

Emergency medical insurance for international travel typically covers the following:

  • Medical expenses: This covers the cost of medical treatments, hospital stays, surgeries, and medications necessitated by an unexpected illness or injury during your trip.
  • Emergency medical evacuation: In the event that local medical facilities are inadequate to treat your condition, emergency medical travel insurance can arrange and cover the costs of evacuating you to a more suitable medical facility or even back to your home country.
  • Repatriation of remains: If the worst were to happen and you pass away while abroad, this coverage helps cover the expenses of returning your remains to your home country.
  • 24/7 assistance services: Many emergency medical travel insurance plans offer round-the-clock assistance services, connecting you with multi-lingual support, medical professionals, and helping you navigate the local healthcare system.
  • Trip interruption coverage: Some policies may include coverage for trip interruption due to a medical emergency, reimbursing you for non-refundable expenses such as pre-paid accommodation and excursions.

What’s not included in emergency medical travel insurance?

Even though emergency medical travel insurance covers a wide range of medical emergencies, certain situations may be excluded from coverage. Common exclusions include:

  • pre-existing medical conditions (unless specifically covered),
  • injuries resulting from reckless behavior or illegal activities,
  • and medical expenses related to high-risk activities without additional coverage.

Always check the policy’s terms and conditions to understand what is not covered.

does travel insurance cover medical emergency

Primary vs. secondary emergency medical travel insurance

What’s the difference?

When it comes to emergency medical travel insurance, there are two main types of coverage: primary and secondary . The difference between the two is when they pay out in the event of a medical claim.

Primary insurance is the first line of defence. It’s the main policy that will cover medical expenses incurred during your trip, regardless of whether you have other health insurance (such as a domestic health insurance plan). With primary coverage, you don’t have to involve your regular health insurance provider initially, which can be advantageous in case your domestic insurance doesn’t cover international medical expenses or has limited coverage outside your home country.

Secondary insurance comes into play after your primary insurance has paid its share of the claim. If you have other health insurance, like a domestic policy, the secondary emergency travel medical insurance will coordinate with it to cover any remaining expenses that the primary insurance didn’t cover.

Which one is right for me?

The best emergency medical travel insurance for you will depend on your individual circumstances. If you have comprehensive domestic health insurance that covers international medical expenses, secondary insurance might be more appropriate. On the other hand, if you want a stand-alone policy that provides comprehensive coverage for medical emergencies during your travels primary insurance could be the better option.

You can even opt for travel insurance for emergency medical only. Just know that you’ll need to cover any other unforeseen expenses that fall outside of that.

Here are some things to consider when choosing between primary and secondary emergency medical travel insurance:

  • Your existing insurance policies: What kind of health insurance do you have? Does it cover international medical expenses? If not, you should purchase a standalone travel insurance policy.
  • Your travel plans: Where are you going? How long will you be gone? The specific needs of your trip will affect the type of insurance you need.
  • Your budget: How much can you afford to spend on travel insurance?

No matter which type of emergency medical travel insurance you choose, it’s important to read the terms and conditions carefully to understand what’s covered and what’s not. This will help you make an informed decision that suits your travel requirements and provides you with adequate financial protection during your journeys abroad.

How much emergency medical travel insurance do travelers need?

Wondering, but how much emergency medical travel insurance do I need ?

The answer depends on a few factors:

  • Destination: If you’re traveling to a developed country with a strong healthcare system, you may be able to get by with a lower level of coverage. However, if you’re traveling to a developing country or a remote area, you’ll need to make sure you have enough coverage to cover the cost of any medical care you might need.
  • Health: If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, you’ll need to make sure your travel insurance covers those conditions. You may also need to purchase additional coverage, such as supplemental health insurance or travel health insurance.
  • Length of trip: The longer your trip, the more emergency medical travel insurance you’ll need. This is because the longer you’re away from home, the more likely you are to need medical care.

As a general rule of thumb, you should have at least $50,000 in emergency medical coverage for international travel. If you’re traveling to a remote destination or a developing country, you may want to consider getting $100,000 or more in coverage.

best travel insurance for medical emergencies

Is emergency medical travel insurance required for international travel?

Emergency medical travel insurance isn’t always legally required for international travel, but it is highly recommended. Many countries have expensive healthcare systems, and medical expenses can quickly accumulate in case of an unforeseen emergency. Having adequate insurance ensures you receive necessary medical care without incurring substantial out-of-pocket costs.

Plus, some countries may even require proof of travel insurance as a condition of entry.

Do all travel insurance plans cover medical expenses?

No, not all travel insurance plans cover medical expenses. While most comprehensive travel insurance policies include some level of medical coverage, the extent and limitations vary. Some plans may have limited coverage, exclusions for pre-existing conditions, or no medical coverage at all. It’s essential to carefully review the policy details to ensure it aligns with your specific medical needs.

travel insurance emergency medical

What’s the difference between emergency medical and medical evacuation?

Emergency medical coverage focuses on providing financial protection for medical expenses incurred while traveling abroad. On the other hand, emergency medical evacuation travel insurance specifically addresses the cost of transporting you to a suitable medical facility or back to your home country for medical treatment if the local facilities are inadequate or unavailable. Medical evacuation coverage is critical in situations where urgent specialized care is necessary and may involve costly air ambulances or repatriation services.

How can assistance companies help you?

Assistance companies play a vital role in emergency situations. They provide 24/7 support and services, including multi-lingual assistance and coordination with local healthcare providers. They can help arrange medical appointments, direct you to accredited facilities, facilitate medical evacuations, and act as a bridge between you, your insurance provider, and healthcare professionals.

Who needs a pre-existing medical condition waiver, how to choose among travel insurance companies, companies that offer travel insurance with cancer coverage, other tips for getting insurance for your trip, travel insurance for cancer patients recapped.

Most plans with pre-existing medical condition coverage require purchase within 20 days of an initial trip deposit.

Generally, non-emergency care and/or expected complications as a result of your diagnosis won’t be covered.

Different companies sell plans with different coverage limits. Read the fine print.

Finding the best travel insurance for your trip can be tricky, even more so if you’re planning a trip and have a pre-existing medical condition like cancer, as some plans don’t cover issues that might arise as a result of this diagnosis (or may limit coverage to specific situations).

Fortunately, you can still enjoy the peace of mind that travel insurance offers, even if you have a medical condition.

Here’s what to know about travel insurance for cancer patients, including what it covers, how it works and which insurance companies have suitable plans.

» Learn more: What to know before buying travel insurance

Travel insurance protects against financial losses and other risks from unexpected events that occur when traveling. Policies cover the expenses and inconveniences incurred from delayed flights, canceled reservations, lost or delayed luggage, injuries and even illness.

That said, not every illness is covered, as not every policy offers protection for those with pre-existing medical conditions.

Within the umbrella of coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, cancer patients are wise to scout out policies that cover cancer-related treatment during a trip. In the off chance that you need unexpected care because of your condition — or perhaps you need to cancel your trip or cut it short due to medical reasons — you want to be able to be reimbursed for all the payments you've made so far.

Most of the time, non-emergency care and/or expected complications that are a result of your diagnosis won’t be covered.

Without coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, companies will not likely reimburse you for emergency expenses, medical care, last-minute flights home or any other trip interruptions/cancellations due to your medical status.

Understanding how this sort of coverage works is important because not every traveler qualifies for a pre-existing medical condition waiver when it comes to obtaining travel insurance with cancer.

Requirements vary from one insurance company to another, so always make sure to read the fine print and details of your particular policy before purchasing.

But in general, you’ll likely need to meet at least one of these conditions:

You’ve had to seek medical care and/or received a diagnosis or treatment within a certain number of days before purchasing your policy.

You’re taking doctor-prescribed medication.

You’ve exhibited symptoms.

As far as the policy itself is concerned, a few more limitations may apply to qualify for the waiver, such as:

Your policy must cover the full purchase cost of your trip.

You bought your policy within a certain number of days of making your first paid booking or reservation (the exact number varies from company to company).

You were OK to travel, medically speaking, when you purchased the policy.

When it comes time to purchase a travel insurance plan, start by comparing options from multiple companies. If in doubt, reach out to the company’s customer service team for clarification. Each company is different and has different requirements and limitations.

» JUMP to learn more about companies to consider

Once you've generated a quote, peruse individual plans from each company, focusing primarily on the details of pre-existing condition coverage. Also consider other helpful protections like cancellation coverage, trip delay or interruption coverage, lost luggage insurance and more.

When comparing policies, pay attention to coverage amounts to make sure what’s offered is enough to bring you peace of mind.

Make sure to start your search for travel insurance early, ideally within a few days of making your first booking, since pre-existing condition waivers often require early purchase — if you don’t buy a plan within a set amount of time (usually 14-20 days) after your initial trip booking, you may not qualify.

Before you start packing, here are some other tips for procuring travel insurance for those with cancer:

Check to see if you already have a credit card that offers trip insurance . While your pre-existing condition may not be covered via your card, you could potentially pair your card's existing coverage with a more basic/economy third-party plan that includes pre-existing conditions coverage.

Even if you don’t have the whole trip booked and paid for, make sure you purchase coverage in the amount of everything you’ve paid for so far within the purchasing window for pre-existing coverage. If you make more reservations later, you’ll have to update your policy coverage amount at that time, usually within a set amount of days. Read your policy info for time limits.

Choose the best policy for you based on not just the policy cost, but also what you need and what is covered.

If you have cancer, travel insurance can seem complicated. Indeed, it’s important to make sure the coverage you select will take care of you should you need it. As long as you understand the requirements of selecting a plan and what it does and doesn’t cover, you can still find a policy that works for you.

Key Benefits of Family Travel Insurance

  • Your travel insurance may already cover your entire family, including children.
  • Travel insurance can cover a single trip or multiple trips within a set time, usually a year.
  • Travel insurance for families should have larger coverage limits than single-traveler plans.

Before they were four months old, my daughters went on their first long-haul international flights, stopping in Dubai before reaching Australia to visit family. Since then, I've learned a lot about traveling with kids.

It essentially boils down to expecting the unexpected. Whether it's a child needing a sudden ER visit just before departure (shoutout to my oldest) or your luggage with all the baby essentials going missing (which happened to my second), you've got to be prepared to roll with the punches, which is where travel insurance comes in.

You might not think much about travel insurance and kids, but if you're a jet-setting family, you probably should. The question of what travel insurance covers is broad. It may cover medical emergencies abroad, lost luggage, and interrupted trips.

Some policies will even cover cancellations for illness, which parents know always seem to strike at the worst possible times. Here's what you should know about travel insurance before starting your next family vacation.

Comprehensive coverage

Family travel insurance covers all traveling family members under a specific policy. Comprehensive coverage in family travel insurance includes emergency medical expenses, cancellations and interruptions, delays, and lost luggage for your entire group.

Cost-effectiveness

While adding your kid to your travel insurance policy is the simplest way to get coverage, it's not always the best travel insurance for your family's needs. More extensive trips and larger families often have to purchase family travel insurance. Insuring multiple people on one policy allows you to score lower rates than buying insurance for each person.

Medical and emergency assistance

Your U.S. healthcare plan may not cover you in other countries. So, you could be responsible for a hefty bill if you get into an accident and require medical care abroad. Fortunately, a comprehensive travel insurance plan includes travel medical insurance , which covers emergency medical expenses such as treatments, hospital stays, and medication. Insurers also offer emergency evacuation and return to the U.S. for medical care at your home institution.

Trip cancellation and interruption

Travel insurance provides coverage for families facing unexpected changes in travel plans. It covers prepaid, nonrefundable expenses incurred when you have to cancel your trip or when your trip is interrupted due to covered unforeseen events, like a pandemic or natural disaster.

Coverage for children and elderly family members

Your travel insurance may already cover your entire family, including children. Many policies allow you to add children 17 or under as long as they travel with at least one legal guardian. Some policies enable grandparents to add kids, too. Often, adding kids is free, but if you're traveling with more than one kiddo, you may need to pay for additional travel insurance coverage.

Policies may have exclusions for those with pre-existing conditions, which is an important consideration for those traveling with elderly families. The good news is that many insurers offer a pre-existing condition waiver if certain conditions are met.

Family-specific inclusions and exclusions

A comprehensive family travel insurance plan covers all family members for an additional fee. Your plan includes medical and emergency assistance and evacuation, trip cancellation and interruption, and stolen or damaged baggage loss.

However, your policy excludes coverage for the following reasons:

  • Foreseeable events (covered in a cancel for any reason policy (CFAR))
  • Travel restrictions from government authorities (covered in a CFAR policy)
  • Pre-existing conditions (covered with a pre-existing condition waiver)
  • High-risk activities (covered with an adventure and sports add-on)

Assessing your family's needs

Assessing your family's needs can help you find the right family travel insurance. Some factors to consider before purchasing a policy are travel frequency and duration, the risk level of your destination, budget, which family members are traveling, and any planned activities.

Comparing family policies

Kids traveling without parents need different travel insurance.

Sooner or later, your child might want to go on a trip with their cousins, friends, or neighbors. Children traveling without a parent need travel insurance for unaccompanied minors or single-child travel insurance. Child-specific travel insurance provides the same coverage as other policies, targeting the youngest solo travelers.

High-flying families can buy a multi-trip travel insurance policy

If your little ones have frequent flier miles, you might be the type of family to benefit from a multi-trip policy, also known as annual travel insurance. This type of policy covers your entire family for the whole year, which means you'll have one less to-do item on your list before booking flights on a whim.

Annual plans may have more limitations. Annual plans limit the length of covered trips, usually 30 days or under. Many limit the riders you can add such as pre-existing condition and CFAR coverage.

Of course, you should expect to also pay more upfront for the same coverage. Depending on how often you travel, though, an annual plan could save you compared to buying a new one for every trip. Just make sure you check your policy documents for any restrictions.

Big kids qualify for travel insurance too

As more experienced parents like to tell me, the years fly by. At some point, your kids aren't, well, children anymore. But many are still dependent on mom and dad. Luckily, some travel insurance policies allow you to add older offspring, often till the age of 21.

If you've started a tradition of buying travel insurance, your bigger kids might purchase separate policies for spring break weekends and other friend trips. For many parents, looping young adult dependents into the family plan is one more way to reduce unnecessary hassles.

Parents traveling without kids should consider a cancel for any reason policy

Sometimes kids can impact your travel plans, even when traveling without them. Parents traveling sans children can enjoy the extra peace of mind from CFAR travel insurance. As the name suggests, this coverage lets you cancel because of a sick kid, a must-see school event, or anything else. Of course, each policy has a time limit.

You have to cancel your plans before the trip happens. Some companies may have different cutoffs. So make sure to check your policy documents. However, as long as you meet that deadline, you won't have to worry about unseen coverage exclusions.

I just added this for a girls' trip to Italy without my daughters this spring. While I would hate to miss the pizza and gelato for any reason, knowing I could change plans if there were an emergency with my children was well worth the cost of adding cancel for any reason coverage.

You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance here.

Where and when to buy

Some credit cards offer travel insurance coverage. So, before purchasing a policy, check your benefits for credit card travel protection . Then, figure out if you need to purchase extra travel insurance coverage.

You can buy travel insurance directly from an insurance provider or through an online comparison website to see multiple quotes at once. Travel agencies also offer insurance with your travel booking.

It's best to buy a policy before your departure date. Limitations on when you must purchase your policy vary by insurer and policy type. However, many insurers require you to purchase within 14 days after making your first trip deposit

Documentation and application process

According to Travelex insurance , these are the pieces of information you'll need to purchase travel insurance.

  • Trip dates
  • Travelers' names and ages
  • Destination
  • Initial trip deposit date
  • Cost of trip by traveler (prepaid and nonrefundable expenses)

Depending on your coverage, your insurance company may ask for more information, such as pre-existing medical conditions and planned activities.

Managing the Policy During Travel

Including your family members on a single policy makes managing your travel insurance easier. Be sure each family member knows the policy's information, including the policy number, coverages and exclusions, emergency hotline number, and how to file a claim. It would help to carry a digital or physical copy of the policy.

Handling claims and emergencies

If you encounter a medical emergency, trip disruption, or lost and stolen property, contact your travel insurance company's emergency assistance hotline. They can provide information on where to proceed or how to get your trip back on track.

Then, you'll want to file a claim for any unexpected expenses you've incurred. Travel insurance works on a reimbursement model. You have to pay for those expenses out-of-pocket before your insurer reimburses you. So, it's important to retain documentation, like receipts, medical records, police records, etc., to file your claim.

In addition to supporting documents, you'll need to provide your policy information and details of the incident. Many insurers allow you to file a claim online but you can also do so over the phone with an agent.

Conclusion and Recommendations for Family Travel Insurance

Traveling with families is expensive and stressful, even for those who love it. However, travel insurance is a small expense that can reassure you that you're ready for whatever happens. Make sure to choose the best travel insurance policy for your family's needs and enjoy the peace of mind it provides on your next adventure.

Yes. Most family travel insurance policies cover domestic and international trips, providing comprehensive protection regardless of the destination.

Many providers offer the option to customize family travel insurance policies to include coverage for adventure sports, though this may incur additional costs.

Coverage for pre-existing medical conditions varies between policies. To get a pre-existing condition waiver , most policies require that you purchase your policy within a time frame from when you made your first trip payment.

Family travel insurance is generally cost-effective for large families. It typically covers multiple family members under one policy, often at a lower cost than individual policies. Most insurers will be able to cover up to 10 family members.

Many family travel insurance policies include children at no additional cost or offer reduced rates for children. However, child-included pricing is, by no means, the industry standard.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Ukraine has right to strike targets in Russia - NATO boss; Putin insists Russian economy is strong

Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO secretary general, says Ukraine has the right to strike "legitimate targets in Russia". Meanwhile, the Russian president takes to the stage in St Petersburg to address the International Economic Forum.

Joe Biden has apologised to Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the recent delay in approving new US aid for Ukraine.

Last month, following months of political disagreements, the Senate passed $95bn (£76.2bn) in war aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan .

"I apologise for those weeks of not knowing," the US president said.

"Some of our very conservative members [of Congress] were holding it up.

"But we got it done, finally. We're still in - completely, totally."

The Ukrainian president thanked his counterpart for American assistance.

"It's very important that you stay with us," he said.

"It's very important that in this unity, the United States of America, all American people stay with Ukraine, like it was during World War Two - how the United States helped to save human lives, to save Europe."

The two men were speaking in Paris, the day after D-Day commemorations in Normandy.

Russia needs to boost its use of non-Western currencies, Vladimir Putin said as he addressed the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

He also said his country needs to reduce imports while calling for a major expansion of its domestic financial markets.

Trade with Asia is soaring, he told delegates, adding that almost two fifths of Russian external trade is now in roubles.

The share conducted in US dollars, euros and other Western currencies has declined.

Russia will try to boost the share of settlements conducted in the currencies of BRICS countries - which include Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, Mr Putin said.

"Last year, the share of payments for Russian exports in the so–called 'toxic' currencies of unfriendly states halved, while the share of the rouble in export and import transactions is growing - it is approaching 40% today," the president said.

Russia has referred to nations that imposed sanctions on it as "unfriendly".

The session begins with an address by the Russian president.

Vladimir Putin says there is a race among world powers to establish sovereignty.

He speaks of the need for countries to both establish partnerships and also to look internally to tackle challenges presented by the current global economic landscape.

Despite all the "obstacles and illegitimate sanctions", Russia remains one of the world's economic leaders, he says.

He adds that "friendly countries" - those that have not joined sanctions against Moscow - account for three quarters of Russia's mutual trade turnover, and praises them for that.

Countries including India and China have strengthened economic ties since Mr Putin launched his war in Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin has taken to the stage in St Petersburg to address the International Economic Forum there.

He's joined by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwais and Bolivian President Luis Alberto Arce Catacora.

Chairing the session is Sergey Karaganov - a Russian political scientist.

We'll bring you any key lines here in this live blog.

A T-shirt is on sale at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum printed with a phrase attributed to Vladimir Putin, Sky News has discovered.

"If a fight is inevitable, throw the first punch," it says.

The Russian president reportedly said it in 2015.

He apparently explained that it was something he had learned while growing up on the streets of Leningrad - a former name of St Petersburg.

The Russian defence ministry has accused Ukraine of injuring 20 people, including children, in a missile attack on the Russian-controlled eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk, using US-supplied ATACMS missiles.

Four of five missiles were shot down by air defence systems, the ministry said in a statement.

However, one of the missiles damaged two residential apartment blocks, it added, claiming it was deliberate.

Sky News is unable to verify the allegations.

There has been no immediate comment from Ukraine.

The European Commission supports starting EU accession talks with Ukraine, the country's prime minister has said.

Denys Shmyhal said the commission had confirmed in a report that Kyiv had fulfilled the remaining steps required to start negotiations.

"Now we expect our European partners to take the next step - to start negotiations on European Union membership this month," Mr Shmyhal said on Telegram.

Earlier (7.43am post) we reported that the commission was reportedly ready to recommend that accession talks get underway.

It is part of an attempt to signal support for Kyiv before Hungary takes over the rotating presidency of the EU next month, the Financial Times reported.

The EU announced earlier this year that it was sending an additional £42bn in aid to Ukraine - but only after  weeks of resistance from Hungary , which reportedly has concerns about minority rights in Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin is likely to adopt a provocative tone as he addresses the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum this afternoon, Ivor Bennett, Sky News's Moscow correspondent , has said.

In his speech, expected at midday UK time at the earliest, the Russian leader may stress there is an alternative view of world affairs to the one being put forward by the West, Bennett added.

"I think he will undoubtedly use some more provocative rhetoric," Bennett said - noting there has been more confrontation in the Russian leader's tone recently, "culminating in that threat on Wednesday night to potentially send weapons to other nations to hit Western targets".

Bennett added: "Whether or not he'll be drawn more on that, giving specific examples, I'm not so sure.

"But I think he could potentially talk more about nuclear weapons, reiterating Russia's readiness to use them.

"The Kremlin likes to say that it's not Russia making the escalations here - they're merely responding to Western provocations.

"Russia is merely defending itself."

Ukraine has the right to attack legitimate military targets in Russia, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said.

"Ukraine has the right to self defence," Mr Stoltenberg said during a news conference with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson at a military base near Stockholm.

He added: "The right to self defence also includes the right to hit legitimate, military targets on the territory of the attacking party, the aggressor - in this case Russia."

Mr Stoltenberg continued: "This is a war of attack that Russia has begun against a peaceful, democratic neighbouring country - Ukraine - that at no point has been a threat to Russia.

"There is no question that Ukraine has the right to hit targets on Russian territory."

The United States recently gave Ukraine permission to use American weapons on Russian territory near Kharkiv.

Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, has claimed that HIMARS rockets have been used since then on civilian targets (8.36 post).

Vladimir Putin has said he is considering arming the West's enemies in retaliation.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has thanked France for its support as he addressed the country's National Assembly.

President Emmanuel Macron has said his country will send Mirage 2000 warplanes to Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president's speech was part of an official visit to France following the 80th anniversary commemorations of D-Day.

"I'm sure a day will come when Ukraine will see the same jets in our skies that we saw in Normandy skies yesterday," Mr Zelenskyy said.

"Your combat aviation [and] brilliant fighter jets under Ukrainian pilots' command will prove that Europe is stronger, stronger than [the] evil which dared to threaten it.

"Now, just like 80 years ago, we can prove it — the power of our unity, the power of our alliance, the power of our shared ideals."

He added: "Can Putin win the war? No, because we have no right to lose."
