Al Jazeera prikazala dokumentarni film ‘Sarajevo safari’

“‘Sarajevski safari’ bila je specifična, normalnom umu nezamisliva vrsta lova, lov na ljude. Tokom opsade Sarajeva bogatim strancima, koji su platili određenu naknadu, bilo je dopušteno da sa srpskih položaja pucaju na ljude u slobodnom dijelu grada. Žrtve su bili civili koji su se u tom trenutku našli na nišanu snajpera tih okrutnih stranaca”, pojasnio je Zupanič.

Svjetska premijera na AJB DOC festivalu

Dokumentarni film Sarajevo safari imao je svjetsku premijeru na petom izdanju AJB DOC Film Festivala, gdje je prikazan u okviru selekcije “AJB Prikazuje”.

Sarajevo safari bit će prikazan u programu Al Jazeere Balkans 31. oktobra, u 20:45 sati.

Produkciju filma potpisuje Arsmedia iz Ljubljane, dok je Al Jazeera Balkans koproducent filma.

Safari: odprava, katere namen je opazovanje ali lov živali v njihovem naravnem okolju.

Med mnogimi dramatičnimi epizodami obleganja Sarajeva v letih 1992 do 1996, je javnosti ostala prikrita zgodba o safariju na ljudi. Redkim izbrancem je bilo znano, da je pri obleganju Sarajeva na srbski strani poleg Vojske Republike Srbske, prostovoljcev in plačancev delovala še ena, maloštevilna in skrivnostna skupina. To so bili premožni tujci, ki so plačevali visoke zneske, da so smeli streljati na prebivalce obleganega Sarajeva.

MIRAN ZUPANIČ

Miran Zupanič (1961) je zaključil študij prava in filmske režije na ljubljanski univerzi. V dokumentarnih filmih se osredotoča na usode posameznikov v prelomnih zgodovinskih trenutkih: Tek za življenje (1990) je bil prvi slovenski dokumentarec o Golem otoku, najtežjem političnem zaporu nekdanje Jugoslavije. Oči Bosne (1993) so bile posnete med krvavo vojno v Bosni in Hercegovini. Kocbek, pesnik v pogrezu zgodovine (2004) obravnava življenjsko pot pesnika in duhovnega revolucionarja Edvarda Kocbeka. Aufbiks! (2006) v igrano-dokumentarni formi rekonstruira nacionalne boje med Slovenci in Nemci v Celju na prehodu iz 19. v 20. stoletje. Otroci s Petrička (2007) temeljijo na intervjujih s potomci domnevnih ali dejanskih sodelavcev nacistov, ki so jih jugoslovanske oblasti po koncu 2. svetovne vojne usmrtile, njihove otroke pa zaprle v taborišče Petriček. Moj prijatelj Mujo (2012) je film o Muji Turajliću, ki je v eksploziji mine izgubil obe roki, a z neuklonljivo življenjsko močjo obdeluje zemljo in skrbi za družino. Dokumentarec Poj mi pesem (2018) je kompleksen portret glasbenika Vlada Kreslina in njegovih raznolikih publik. Dokumentarni film Sarajevo safari (2022) razkriva javnosti prej neznano zgodbo o tujcih, ki so plačevali za to, da so smeli streljati na prebivalce obleganega Sarajeva. Miran Zupanič piše scenarije in režira tudi igrane filme: Operacija Cartier (1991), Radio.doc (1995), Barabe! (2001), Igra s pari (2009), Zmaga, ali kako je Maks Bikec zasukal kolo zgodovine (2011). Od leta 1997 poučuje filmsko režijo na Akademiji za gledališče, radio, film in televizijo Univerze v Ljubljani.

Among the many dramatic episodes of the siege of Sarajevo from 1992 to 1996, the story of a human safari has remained concealed from the public eye. Only a select few were aware that on the Serbian side, the siege of Sarajevo involved not only the Bosnian Serb Army, volunteers and mercenaries but also another, small and clandestine group. These were wealthy foreigners who paid high fees for the chance to shoot at the residents of besieged Sarajevo.

The film gives the viewer an intimation of the absolute evil underlying the masks of humanity and offers insight into the fates of people whose lives were irrevocably changed by the bullets of snipers. Along with their suffering, it also helps the viewer understand their wisdom and the power of their will to live. (Miran Zupanič)  

There are rumours of different issues circulating among people, but the discourse changes when someone broaches a particular topic in a public space. Then it's no longer a rumour, it's a public debate. Apparently, this also happened in the case of human hunting in Sarajevo. With the testimonies provided in our film, especially by two people who had personally experienced this phenomenon, we have pulled back the curtain, and now I meet people every day who tell me they have already heard about the safari. MIRAN ZUPANIČ Miran Zupanič (born 1961) graduated from the University in Ljubljana with degrees in law and film directing. In his documentary films, he focuses on the destiny of individuals in landmark moments of the 20th century: Run for Life (1990) is the first Slovenian documentary film about Goli otok, the toughest political prison in former Yugoslavia. The Eyes of Bosnia (1993) is a film shot during the bloody war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Kocbek, A Poet in the Abyss of History (2004) is a documentary about the life journey of Edvard Kocbek, a poet and spiritual revolutionary. Aufbiks! (2006) is a documentary-fiction film reconstructing national conflicts between Slovenians and Germans in Celje at the turn of the 20th century. Children from Petriček Hill (2007) is a documentary based on interviews with the descendants of alleged or actual Nazi collaborators who were executed by Yugoslav authorities at the end of WWII and whose children were committed to the Petriček concentration camp. My Friend Mujo (2012) is a film about Mujo Turajlić, a man who lost both of his arms in an explosion yet possesses the indomitable spirit to work the fields and provide for his family. The documentary Sing Me a Song (2018) is a complex portrait of the musician Vlado Kreslin and his diverse audiences. The documentary Sarajevo Safari (2022) reveals what was a publicly unknown story of foreigners paying money to shoot at residents of besieged Sarajevo. Miran Zupanič writes screenplays and also directs fiction films: Operation Cartier (1991), Radio.doc (1995), Rascals! (2001), Couples at Stake (2009), Victory, or How Maks Bigec Turned the Wheel of History (2011). Since 1997, Zupanič has been a professor of film directing at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and TV of the University of Ljubljana.

How do you take a story as shocking as a human safari and make such a distracted, uninspired and ultimately boring documentary?

after watching it for a second time, i realised how much of a slippery slope this movie is. there’s 75 minutes of interviews and the only information you’re able to extract is that there’s a group of people who offered you to come shoot at the civilians for money. i get that the slovenian guy’s hands might be tied and that he is afraid to point fingers and talk names but the movie barely holds any grounds because it’s so stripped of this. to me it’s even a bit upsetting because it’s all just so heavily vague and the topic of this war is too heavy, sensitive, hurtful for it to be handled this poorly. the victims of the war deserve more than that. 

but then again it sparked some conversations so we’ll see where that goes.

Yaşananlar elbette ki çok acı ve izlerken kötü hissettiriyor. Önemli konulara değinilmiş. Fakat sırf içeriği önemli diye de belgesele başarılı demek doğru olmaz. heartbreaking to say the least... the documentary could have been better at showing just how tragic the entire situation was. there were so many facts in the film i already knew, and while I understand an exposé type of documentary would be super dangerous for the people involved, i feel that's what the victims of the horrible crimes deserved. but i'm glad the film is sparking up conversation, people should know about these crimes against humanity.

12/09/2022 - Miran Zupanič’s doc may be imperfectly crafted, but it still elicits the right emotions about the unspeakable activities of certain circles during the 1990s war in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Thirty years after the beginning of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and 27 years after it officially ended, it might seem that there is no topic, no matter how “fringe” or niche, left uncovered from that period of time. However, as it turns out, some of them are under-explored, to put it mildly. One of these is certainly a very particular bloody “activity” practised by some people with considerable financial and other means – a “safari” of sorts, but with targets and “trophies” of a different kind. Unearthing and exploring it, both in the factual and in a psychological and even philosophical sense, is the mission of Miran Zupanič and his documentary Sarajevo Safari , which has world-premiered at the fifth AJB DOC Film Festival in Sarajevo.

Zupanič opens his 75-minute documentary with seemingly idyllic footage of a spot on the hills overlooking the city, but the solemn music featuring a piano and a choir sets the foreboding mood. Archive footage of life in the city under the 1992-1995 siege follows in order to confirm the sense of impending doom. Then the narrator, shot from behind and in the shadows, starts telling his story about the “safari” and his connection to it as a witness.

The secretive, anonymous narrator had some military education in 1980s Yugoslavia and made a living in the intelligence sector before the collapse of the country. Out of work, he was approached by an equally secretive US agency with a lucrative job offer to travel to different parts of the collapsing country on a press accreditation and to “listen to the pulse of its people and peoples”. Through his contacts in Belgrade, he was informed about a “safari”: the “hunters” indulging in this activity were shooting at people in the encircled city from the sniper positions of the Serbian forces, for a price. The “safari” was organised and facilitated by the armies of both Serbia and Republika Srpska, and the participants came from abroad to assuage their morbid cravings.

Other than his narrator, he relies heavily on the archival footage of “normalised” city life from 1993-94, obtained by Božo Zadravec and the film’s producer, Franci Zajc , who, at the time, were war reporters. Zupanič also includes three sets of interviewees: a couple who lost their one-year-old daughter to a sniper shot; a former military intelligence officer and analyst, who corroborates the narrator’s story with his own findings obtained from a captured enemy soldier who witnessed one of the hunters being transported; and another victim of sniper fire, Faruk Šabanović , from the iconic archival footage of a man being shot near the Land Museum and then loaded into a UN armoured ambulance. While the officer’s account serves to cement the truthfulness of the narrator’s story, the couple’s testimony is used to compound the emotional effect of the loss they suffered, and Šabanović’s propels the story towards its more psychological and philosophical aspects.

The clarity and the “no nonsense” attitude of Zupanič’s approach is to be admired, but there are certain problems on both the narrative and the construction levels. Firstly, the narrator is the type of character that might speak the truth, but never the whole truth and certainly not nothing but the truth. Secondly, the archive footage tends to get a tad repetitive and is not really illustrative in regard to the narration it accompanies. Finally, the interviewees’ testimonies tend to get too long and to break the editing rhythm that Zupanič had established previously. But nevertheless, Sarajevo Safari has no problem striking the intended emotional chord.

Among the many dramatic episodes of the siege of Sarajevo in the years 1992 to 1996, the story of a human safari has remained concealed from the public eye. Few people knew that those fighting the war on the Serbian side were not only the Bosnian Serb Army, volunteers and mercenaries but also a small, clandestine group: wealthy foreigners who paid high fees for the chance to shoot at the residents of the city under siege.

It uncovers little-known shocking details about the Bosnian War of the 90s. The film is about rich foreigners who paid money for the opportunity to shoot civilians in the besieged capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina from the positions of the Serb army.

Director of ‘Sarajevo Safari’: I did not believe that so much Evil existed”

The documentary film “Sarajevo Safari” by Slovenian author Miran Zupanič was screened as part of the “AJB Screening” program at the fifth AJB DOC Film Festival.

The Kovači Multimedia Center hosted the world premiere of the film Sarajevo Safari by Slovenian author Miran Zupanič, which was followed by a conversation between the author and the audience.

Slovenian director Miran Zupanič, whose story about the morbid “hunting” of living people, told in the film “Sarajevo Safari”, shocked the public, explains in an interview before the premiere that even he couldn’t believe it when he first heard about the “hunting” done by the rich and influential foreigners, who paid do go on a killing spree from the Serb military positions, targeting already suffering people in the besieged Sarajevo during the last war.

The film tells a brutal story about the little-known phenomenon of “manhunting”, that is, rich foreigners who paid a lot of money for the opportunity to shoot at the citizens of besieged Sarajevo, and because of its intriguing subject, this film attracted great interest of the public and the media, weeks before the screening.

“The ‘Sarajevo safari’ was a specific, unimaginable type of hunting – manhunting. During the siege of Sarajevo, rich foreigners who paid a certain amount of money were allowed to shoot from the Serb positions at people in the free part of the city. The victims were civilians who found themselves in the crosshairs of the snipers of those cruel foreigners,” Zupanič explained.

As he pointed out, he first heard about this phenomenon in 2019, which still remains shrouded in secrecy.

In disbelief, at first, he did not even think of making a film about the “safari”, as he ironically called it, until he heard witnesses whose statements seemed credible to him. Some of them stood in front of the film cameras and some did not want to.

“At the beginning, I was in shock, horror and surprise when producer Franci Zajc told me that story; I couldn’t believe it, but it turned out he had a witness, so I talked to him. He was Slovenian, worked for an important American agency and was in the field during the war and personally witnessed it. He didn’t shoot, but he was a kind of ‘observer’, let’s put it that way. My first impulse was a shock, but at the same time, it was so convincing that I would have felt like a coward if I hadn’t pursued it further. My colleague Franci Zajc searched further in Bosnia, and since he had very good contacts because we had already filmed here during the war, another gentleman enters the story, Edin Subašić, a retired officer of the intelligence service of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who analyzed a case that referred to the “safari”. So, now we already had two witnesses,” Zupanič says and adds that he wouldn’t even do the film if there was only one witness.

In the further search, more witnesses appeared, they said they would speak, but unfortunately they changed their minds, the director points out.

“After that, I decided that there will be nothing in the film other than witnesses and victims, so only testimonies. Apart from the mentioned Slovene, the characters are seen in the film, and their names are listed at the end,” explains the director ahead of the premiere of “Sarajevo Safari”.

The work on the film lasted three and a half years, and most of that time was taken up by the search for witnesses. Time passed and waiting for the consent of the witnesses, who in the end changed their minds, explains Zupanič.

When asked if he was dealing with a message in the film or mere arguments about a phenomenon unimaginable to common sense, he replied that he would like everyone to extract a message for themselves, and in his opinion, as a precaution, we should all think together about the limits to which human evil can reach.

The foreigners who shot live targets in the besieged city came, according to one source, from Canada, the United States of America and Russia, and according to another, from Italy, whether they were Italians or people for whom that country was just a route.

According to the testimony of two witnesses, their starting point on the way to Sarajevo was Belgrade and, according to one source, they were transported by helicopter, and according to another, by road transport.

Reflecting on the profile of people ready for such horror, the director points out that they must be beings beyond morality and ethics. Besides being rich, they were probably very socially influential people.

“Because if you’re just rich or a psychopath or, for all I know, a member of some caste, that’s one thing. However, I think that these people must have some kind of influence, some kind of social power,” said Zupanič.

The creators of the film do not know the identity of the killers, and even if they did, the film would not include them; that is more a matter for investigative bodies, emphasizes Zupanič and adds that the point is to discover a phenomenon on a global scale, which encourages thinking about what are the values ​​that hold the community together as a human entity and what breaks it as such an entity.

For the world premiere of the film, he specifically chose Sarajevo, firmly convinced that it is most appropriate to first talk about the morbid “hunt” right there at the place of the victims. Sarajevo audience is the one that should judge the film and his work as the director.

Ima srednji potencial za razvoj slovenske kulture in slovenskega jezika. Izkazuje zelo visoko izvirnost in inovativnost v rabi medija. O brutalnosti vojne na območju Bosne in Hercegovine ob razpadu nekdanje skupne države je bilo posnetih že veliko dokumentarcev, ki so s te ali one perspektive pričali o popolnem razčlovečenju in izbruhu nedojemljivega sovraštva. Sarajevski safari v to zgodbo prinaša doslej neznano podobo absolutnega zla in razkrije še eno od nepojmljivih zlorab moči: gre za zgodbo o lovcih na ljudi, posameznikih, na videz povsem »vsakdanjih« možeh, tujih bogataših, ki so plačali, da so lahko za lastno zabavo streljali na prebivalce, tudi na otroke in nosečnice, v obkoljenem Sarajevu ... Projekt s svojo vsebinsko zasnovo, dosedanjo raziskavo, pripovednim tokom in nakazanim režijskim pristopom izkazuje visoko utemeljenost za realizacijo. Ocena režiserjevega dosedanjega dela je podana na podlagi priloženih referenc, iz katerih je razvidno, da je njegovo režijsko ustvarjalno delo na avdiovizualnem področju izredno odmevno. Odlična ocena režijskega koncepta je podana na podlagi kvalitete, profesionalnosti izvedbe, raznovrstnosti, izvirnosti, komunikativnosti in aktualnosti pristopa k projektu. Producentovo delo je zelo odmevno tako v mednarodnem prostoru kot pri nas. Z mnogimi igranimi in dokumentarnimi projekti je bil uvrščen na mednarodne in domača filmske festivale, kjer so prejeli številne nagrade. Producentova strokovna in finančna kredibilnost je zelo dobra, kar odraža tudi ocena komisije. Finančni načrt in predračun sta ustrezna. Opazne pa so manjše napake, na primer pri postavki honorar producenta, ki je višji od upravičenih 7 odstotkov od zaprošenega zneska, prav tako tudi pri postavki režijski stroški, kjer je dovoljenih 5 odstotkov od zaprošenega zneska. Temu primerna je tudi naša ocena.
