Did the Latest iOS Update Move Your Search Bar to the Bottom of the Screen? Here’s How to Fix It

Kelly Corbett - Author

Published Dec. 8 2021, 4:08 p.m. ET

Picture this: The year is 2040. I am handing my child their first iPhone, the iPhone 54X. I show my child all of the apps that Meta has created, as well as how to browse the internet with their phone. I ask them to try typing a website or search term in. They head to the bottom of the screen and start keying away. I laugh. I feel old. I become nostalgic.

“I remember when the search bar was located at the top of the screen,” I’ll say.

However, my kid will be too distracted by their $1000 device to care. Typical!

Regardless, I'll still think back on those days when everything made sense — the days before the iOS 15 update.

For those not in the know, this software update moved Safari's search bar to an entirely new spot. Personally, I hate it and I know I'm not the only one. So why did Apple do this, and is there a way to fix it? Keep scrolling to find out.

Why did the iOS 15 update move the search bar to the bottom of Safari?

In late 2021, Apple released iOS 15. This new operating system, which iPhones users are encouraged to download and update their devices with, introduces some new features. For starters, notifications have gotten a new look, more privacy features have been added, ID cards can now be uploaded to the Wallet app, and users can activate "Focus" mode in order to minimize distractions.

The Maps, Weather, and Notes apps all got mini-makeovers, too.

Most of us seem to be OK with these changes. However, it's Safari's new design that has sent folks into a tizzy. Get this: The search/website URL bar now floats at the bottom of the screen. Yes, the bottom.

When all you've ever known your whole life is a world where the search bar is located at the top of the screen, this change can seem a bit jarring.

Twitter user @equimanthorn sums up my thoughts exactly. "iOS 15 changing the search bar on Safari to the bottom of the screen is outright abominable," he wrote.

Meanwhile, other users made jokes about how they're struggling to get used to the search bar's new spot.

my dumb ass still touching the top of the screen in the browser after installing iOS15 pic.twitter.com/Apa5re0O79 — Outback Szn 🐗 (@brycejallday) December 3, 2021

MacRumors shed some light on why Apple moved this everyday feature. "Controls are brought to the bottom of the screen so that they are easier to reach with one hand," the tech blog reads. By moving the search bar down, it also clears up space and allows users to focus more on the webpage's content.

Not only that but this new search bar doubles as a tabs bar. Users can now access and manage their tabs in a much easier fashion.

The good news is that you can move your search bar back to the top of the screen with iOS 15.

If you're not a fan of the search bar being moved to the bottom, worry not. Thanks to @kmayoTechTeach , I have been able to take control of my life again and bring my search bar back to where it's supposed to be. She tweeted a screenshot that illustrated how she moved her search bar back.

My brain can’t get used to the address bar being at the bottom of #Safari in #iOS15 . Here’s how to change it 👉🏽 Settings ➡️ Safari pic.twitter.com/0RedF7KMUU — Kristin Mayo (@kmayoTechTeach) December 1, 2021

Following her directions, I went to the Settings section on my phone. Then I scrolled down until I saw Safari. Once I tapped in, I was able to change the placement of the search bar, so it sits at the top of the webpage again. Yup, happiness has been restored. Everything is just like it used to be in the good old days (read: the pre iOS 15 era).

Currently, it's unknown whether Apple plans to phase out this top search bar option in the future, but for now, we'll just cherish our time with it. It's great to see you back on top again, search bar!

Safari: How to Get Search Bar Back to the Top & Disable Landscape Tab View

safari search bar on bottom

With iOS 15 Safari, the app has a whole new layout which brings many updates to the way you browse in the app. In Safari, the address bar is now located at the bottom of your iPhone screen, and in landscape orientation tabs will now appear in a list across the top. If you find these updates inconvenient and want to revert to the previous iOS 14 Safari layout, we'll show you how!

Move Address Bar to the Top of Safari

Remove the tab bar from safari landscape view.

Moving the search bar to the bottom of the screen has been one of the biggest changes to Safari in iOS 15. Luckily, if you don't like this change, you can switch it back! Safari now has two tab modes: Single Tab and Tab Bar. With Single Tab mode, your Apple address bar is displayed at the top of Safari and you must tap the tab icon to switch between tabs. With the Tab Bar mode, your URL address bar is displayed at the bottom, and you can swipe between open Safari tabs. Below, we'll cover how to get the URL bar back to the top of the page in Safari.

How to Move Address Bar to the Top in Safari (Shortcut)

Perhaps you find yourself accidentally swiping between tabs or you find it disorienting to have the URL bar at the bottom of your screen. Whatever your reason, this is the fastest way to switch into Single Tab mode and move the search bar to the top of Safari while browsing.

Now your Apple search bar will be displayed at the top of the screen. If you ever change your mind and want to revert back to the Tab Bar mode (being able to swipe between tabs is pretty handy!), follow the steps above and tap Show Bottom Tab Bar.

How to Place the Website Search Bar at the Top in Settings

This is a different method to adjust the same setting shown in the shortcut above. Below, we'll cover how to move your iPhone or iPad search bar to the top in Settings.

safari search bar on bottom

The landscape tab bar in Safari displays open tabs across the top of your screen and allows you to tap and switch between them, much the same way you would on your laptop. This is a handy update, as it means you no longer have to tap the Tab icon to switch tabs while browsing in landscape view. However, if you feel the landscape tab bar is crowding your screen and cramping your style, you can disable this feature:

That's all there is to it! Once you've adjusted these iOS 15 Safari settings, you'll be back to the previous browsing layout you know and love. You can also learn how to customize the Safari Start page to show the information you need.

iOS 15 Safari: How to change the address/search bar design on iPhone

Avatar for Michael Potuck

Apple’s latest iOS release comes with an all-new Safari design that places the address/search bar at the bottom of the screen by default. But you can switch back to the classic iOS Safari design with a top bar. Here’s how to change the iOS 15 Safari address/search bar on iPhone.

Apple made its way through multiple iterations of the new iOS 15 Safari design and with the sixth beta , it included the option to switch between the bottom address/search bar and the classic iOS Safari top address/search bar on iPhone .

The official iOS 15 public release also includes the classic bottom menu bar instead of packing all of Safari’s buttons into the unified address/search/tab bar.

How to change iOS 15 Safari address/search bar on iPhone

  • Running iOS 15, open Safari on your iPhone
  • In the bottom address/search bar, tap the “aA” icon on the left (when on a website)
  • Tap Show Top Address Bar
  • Tap the “aA” icon in the top address/search bar
  • Choose Show Bottom Tab Bar

Alternatively, you can also change the iOS 15 address/search bar by heading to the Settings app > Safari > swipe down and choose “Single Tab.”

Here’s how it looks to change the Safari address/search bar on iPhone:

Site default logo image

And here’s how it looks to change it back to the bottom address/search bar:

The other way to change the address/search bar design is in the Settings app.

In addition to changing between the bottom and classic top address/search bar designs, you can choose to enable/disable website tinting (matches the top iPhone status bar to websites’ colors) and enable/disable the landscape tab bar.

I Prioritize These 3 Upgrades When Buying a New Mac

I regret switching to an esim: these were the biggest drawbacks, why i regret buying an android tablet instead of an ipad.

The Safari search bar was near the top of the iPhone's screen for the longest time. But starting with iOS 15, Apple moved the search bar to the bottom, making it easily accessible on big iPhones. Plus, the addition of an effortless swipe gesture even made it easy to switch tabs.

However, if you do not like the bottom placement of the tab bar, there is a way to move the Safari search bar back to the top of your iPhone. Here, we've listed the steps to help you do that.

Two Ways to Get Back the Old Safari Search Bar on iPhone

Modern versions of iOS offer two ways to move the address bar to the top and improve your Safari experience on an iPhone . The first is from within the Safari app, while the second involves using the iPhone Settings app. We've detailed both ways to move the Safari search bar on your iPhone to the top below:

1. Move the Safari Search Bar to the Top Directly in Safari

This is the more convenient method, as you can do it straight from the browser:

  • Visit any website in Safari on your iPhone.
  • Tap AA located on the left of your address bar.
  • Now, choose Show Top Address Bar . Instantly, the search bar will move to the top and stay like this.

Even if you close Safari and relaunch it, the address bar will stay at the top, making this a quick and easy way to switch its position.

2. Move Safari's Search Bar to the Top From Settings

This is the usual method to find all Safari-related settings in one place. You can also use the option here to move the Safari search bar back to the top:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Scroll down and tap Safari .
  • Under Tabs, select Single Tab .
  • Now, open Safari, and you'll find the search bar at the top.

How to Switch Back to the Bottom Safari Search Bar

If you change your mind or wish to give Safari's bottom address bar a try, here's how to switch back and use the tab bar:

  • When you are inside Safari, tap AA from the top-left.
  • Tap on Show Bottom Tab Bar .
  • Alternatively, you may go to Settings > Safari and select Tab Bar .

Enjoy seamlessly switching between multiple tabs and better one-handed usage with Safari's tab bar.

What Is the Landscape Tab Bar Option in Safari's Settings?

Inside Safari Settings on an iPhone running iOS 15 or later, you'll see an option called Landscape Tab Bar , which is enabled by default. When you rotate the iPhone in landscape mode and use Safari, you will see all the open tabs on the top, just like you would on a computer browser.

When this particular option is off, this thin strip showing your open tabs is absent. Look at the image below to understand the difference. You may want to keep this enabled for better tab management.

Apple's Safari Redesign for Bigger iPhones

iPhone screens are increasing in size. As a result, most people have trouble reaching the top search bar when using an iPhone one-handed. But this redesign to move the Safari search bar to the bottom of the screen aims to fix that problem. Plus, this change introduces the tab bar, which is quite handy.

However, it's nice to see Apple give long-time iPhone users the option to move the address bar back to the top in case they prefer the old-school look and feel of Safari on the iPhone.

How To : Move Safari's Search Bar to the Top of the Screen in iOS 15

Move Safari's Search Bar to the Top of the Screen in iOS 15

Some of the new features in iOS 15 take some getting used to, and the biggest one of those is Safari's relocated search bar, aka address bar. There are more than a few reasons why it's a jarring change, but the good news is that you can return Safari's search bar to its pre-iOS 15 position at the top of the screen.

My muscle memory still has my fingers tapping the top of the screen, which does nothing but unhides the search bar at the bottom. But there are bigger issues than that to point out, primarily, how you open up Private Browsing Mode now.

On iOS 14 and under, to open a new private tab from within Safari , you'd tap the tabs button, hit "Private," then tap the plus (+) sign. On iOS 15 and later, when you tap the tabs button, you'll see the current number of tabs open — tap that, then select "Private," and tap the plus (+) sign to get a new private tab. It's one extra step, and that's enough to annoy most people.

  • More Info: How to Open a New Private Tab in iOS 15's Updated Safari Design

Apple still has the shortcut to open a new private tab, where you long-press the tabs button and hit "New Private Tab," so it's not all bad. It even has a faster way to access Private Browsing Mode in general, where you long-press the tabs icon and tap "Private," which jumps you right to your last-used private tab. That's two steps compared to iOS 14's three (tabs icon –> "Private" –> "Done").

If you can get used to the search bar at the bottom of Safari, it's worth keeping it there since you can quickly swipe left or right on the new Tab Bar to switch between your open tabs. And it's good placement if you tend to browse the web one-handed. But if you want to go back to the old way of doing things, moving the search bar to the top of your iPhone is easy to do.

Method 1: Switch in Safari Directly

Open the Page Settings menu (previously called the "View" or actions menu) by tapping the "AA" in the search bar. You won't see it on a new blank tab, so make sure it's a tab with a webpage already opened. In the menu, tap "Show Top Address Bar," and everything returns to normal.

How to Move Safari's Search Bar to the Top of the Screen in iOS 15

If you ever want to switch back, do the same thing but tap "Show Bottom Tab Bar" instead.

How to Move Safari's Search Bar to the Top of the Screen in iOS 15

There is no option for this in the Page Settings menu when you're in landscape mode, but that's not as bothersome since the search bar is still at the top, only with the Tab Bar direction under it. Still, if you don't like the space the Tab Bar takes up in landscape views, check out the following method for removing it.

Method 2: Switch in Safari's Settings

Open the Settings app and select "Safari." You can also search for "Safari" from Spotlight search and open it under the Settings group (you can also type in "Safari se" to make the result appear at the top). Next, go to the Tabs section, and check "Single Tab" instead of "Tab Bar."

If you want to remove the Tab Bar in landscape mode, you can do that by toggling off the "Landscape Tab Bar" switch in the Tabs settings. You can see the before and after below.

There's a Way to Move Your iPhone Safari Search Bar Back to the Top (Where It Belongs)

safari search bar on bottom

Ever since the first iPhone was introduced in 2007, the Safari search bar — aka the address bar, the tab bar, or just where the URL goes — has rested at the top of the page. There were no ifs, ands, or buts about its placement; it simply stayed at the top, and no one blinked an eye . . . that is, until now. Apple's recent iOS 15 update moved the Safari Search Bar to the bottom of the page, changing our searching routine in a small way with an undeniably big impact.

Sure, moving the Safari search bar was a simple switch-up, and one that even made sense: our fingers are down there anyway. But damn, has it been a struggle to adapt to. Muscle memory is a real thing, and I (and many other friends and colleagues) can't seem to get used to a bottom search bar. While I was very welcoming of iOS 15's Safari background customization , the rearranged search bar is something I may never get used to. The good news? You can move the Safari search bar back to the top of the page in just a few simple steps:

How to Move Your iPhone Safari Search Bar Back to the Top of the Page

  • Open Settings.
  • Scroll down and tap Safari.
  • Under Tabs, select Single Tab.

It's that easy! Please keep in mind that by choosing the Single Tab option, your search bar will move back to the top of the page, but you won't be able to scroll left and right between different Safari tabs like you could with the Sidebar option. Regardless, your memory will be very happy to see it back at the top.

Here's how to move your Safari Browser search bar to the top in iOS 15.

Here’s How To Move Your Safari Search Bar Back To The Top In iOS 15

For when you don’t want to deal with too much change at once.

Apple’s highly-anticipated software update, iOS 15, finally became available for public download on Monday, Sept. 20. Now that iOS 15 here, you can test out all the new features on your iPhone, including a redesigned Safari browsing experience that comes with a new bottom tab bar. If you prefer the OG design, however, you may be wondering how to move the Safari search bar back to the top in iOS 15. There are a few steps you’ll need to follow.

Apple’s latest software update is packed with a whole slew of new features that are designed to improve the way you use your iPhone. Of course, Safari is the go-to way to search the internet while on your device, so Apple made some major changes to make browsing more convenient.

When you open Safari, you’ll immediately notice a new tab bar at the bottom of the screen rather than the top. Since iOS 15 introduces the ability to switch Safari tabs by swiping left or right on the address bar, having the search bar at the bottom makes it easier to access as you hold your phone. You’ll even be able to “swipe between tabs with one hand,” per the iOS 15 guide.

If you prefer the old Safari, don’t fret. The bottom tab bar is simply a default setting, and you can switch back to the single tab at the top at any time. To switch it back to a top search bar, all you’ll have to do is head to “Settings,” tap “Safari,” scroll down to “Tabs,” and finally opt for “Single Tab” instead of the default “Tab Bar.” Of course, with the “Single Tab” setting, you won’t have the ability to swipe left and right to switch tabs, but it’ll look and feel just like your Safari browser did prior to your iOS 15 update.

Here's how to move your Safari Browser search bar to the top in iOS 15.

The new bottom tab bar also lets you swipe up to see all of your currently open tabs, so it might be worth it to give it a try — but if you’re not here for the change, you can implement the simple fix.

Other redesigned Safari features you’ll want to try out include the new Tab Groups, which allow you to save tabs you want to keep together (say, if you’re planning for a trip) into groups and access them with one tap across your Apple devices. You can also customize your browser start page to show what you’d like, such as Favorites, Frequently Visited, and more.

Now that you know how to move your search bar to the top, you can return to the old Safari whenever you’re feeling nostalgic or just a little too overwhelmed by all the iOS 15 updates.

How to move the Safari address bar back to the top on iOS 15

Apple's moved the Safari address bar to the bottom of the screen on iOS 15 — but you can change it

ios 15 beta hands-on review

Though Apple's iOS 15 introduced a bunch of handy new features, many iPhone users were left wondering how to move the Safari address bar back to the top after it was shifted to the bottom of the screen.

Granted, having the address bar at the bottom of Safari makes it easier to access if you're using your iPhone with one hand. But when something that you've become used to after years of use is changed — such as the taskbar being moved to the center in Windows 11 — it's understandable when you just want things to be the way they were.

Of course, iOS 15 does have many positive upgrades, as detailed in our full iOS 15 review . In addition to improving the experience of using the latest Apple devices, such as the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max , it also gives new life to older Apple products, with compatibility going as far back as the six-year-old iPhone 6s.

Thankfully, though, it's easy to move the address back to the top on iOS 15, as detailed in our guide below.

How to move the Safari tab bar on iOS 15

1. Open up Safari. On your Apple device with iOS 15 installed navigate to Safari; we're sure you know what it looks like, but just in case you've forgotten, it's the app with a blue and white compass icon.

2. Press the “aA” button on the tab bar. This can be found on the left side of the tab bar. Press it to bring up a submenu.

How To Move The Safari Search Bar To The Top of An iPhone Screen

By Author Turner Tomlinson

Posted on Last updated: April 9, 2023

In older iOS versions, the Safari search bar was always located at the top of the screen, but starting with the iOS 15, it was moved to the bottom of the screen. This shift is meant to make it easier to access the bar on larger iPhones. However, you can easily move it back to its former position if you prefer the older setup.

There are two ways to move the Safari search bar to the top of the iPhone screen: You can open the Safari app and tap on the ‘AA’ icon at the left of the search bar. Choose ‘Show Top Address Bar’ from the menu. Alternatively, you can also open the Safari section in Settings and tap on ‘Single Tab.’

So, if you find the search bar at the bottom of your screen to be inconvenient or hard to use, then there’s no need to worry. You can easily move it to the top with just a few taps. Let’s take a closer look at how you can move your search bar to the top and a few other iOS 15 updates that are worth mentioning.

Why Is Your Search Bar at the Bottom of Your iPhone?

With the iOS 15 update, Apple has moved the Safari search bar to the bottom of the screen, which can greatly enhance the user experience for many people.

The new Safari search bar also acts as a tabs bar, making it easier for users to manage and access their tabs. You can now scroll right and left between open tabs.

Previously, if you wanted to select an open tab on older versions, you had to choose the tabs icon in your screen’s lower right corner. This would open the page that shows thumbnail images of all the open tabs so that you could choose the one that you wanted.

The search bar at the bottom is also much easier to control with one hand, and it clears up space, allowing users to focus better on the webpage’s content.

How to Move Your Search Bar Back to the Top

Iphone safari browser

If you’re not too happy with your search bar being at the bottom, you can easily revert to the previous top-of-the-window bar. This can be done through two apps — the Safari app or the Settings app.

Move the Search Bar in Safari

The easiest way to move your search bar is from within Safari itself. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Tap the ‘ AA ‘ icon on the left-hand corner of the address bar at the bottom of your iPhone’s screen. If the address bar isn’t visible on the screen, scroll up to bring the address bar back.
  • When you choose the AA icon, a list of options will appear. Choose ‘ Show Top Address Bar.’ Ta-da!

Move the Search Bar in Settings

Moving the search bar in Settings is a bit more complex and a bit less intuitive. But it’s still pretty easy! This is how you do it:

  • Go to ‘Settings’ . Scroll down the list to ‘Safari’ and tap on it.
  • Under the ‘Tabs’ section of the Safari page, you’ll see two icons. By choosing the ‘Single Tab’ on the right, you can move the address bar back to the top of Safari. These icons helpfully show the position of the address bar, whether it’s at the top or bottom of the window.
  • If you want to move the search bar back to the bottom, instead of choosing the icon on the right, tap on the ‘ Tab Bar’ icon on the left.

Other iOS 15 Updates You Should Know

It was the iOS 15 update that caused the changes in Safari, specifically moving the address bar down. And there are a few other important iOS 15 updates that are designed to enhance the iPhone user experience. These include:

With significantly enhanced details, the Maps app now exhibits bike lanes, pedestrian crosswalks, buildings, and more in a new 3D view.

This provides users with an improved city-driving experience thanks to added road details and unique transit features like AR walking directions, pinned favorite lines, and notifications to disembark.

This is basically an extension of the Do Not Disturb feature. When you activate this feature, your iPhone won’t be able to receive calls or messages to distract you. This feature is particularly useful when you don’t want to be disturbed while working or sleeping.

Iphone facetime

With iOS 15, you can now enjoy Spatial Audio and Voice Isolation in FaceTime calls. The Portrait mode in FaceTime also now offers a new grid mode that allows you to see more faces at the same time.

Additionally, with the new SharePlay feature, you can share pictures during a FaceTime call. You can also schedule a FaceTime call and send its link to participants, which can be accessed through Windows and Android devices as well.

The Live Text feature is quite extraordinary. When you take a photo with your iPhone, your device will be able to recognize helpful information by using its on-device intelligence.

Your iPhone’s Optical Character Recognition allows you to highlight or extract text from an image to send it directly via email, get directions, and even make a phone call.

Is the iPhone default browser bar annoying you? Here's how to move it

In iOS 15, Apple added the ability to move the Safari search and address bar to the top or bottom of the screen. Here's how to move it where you want.

The tab bar in Safari can live at the bottom of your screen in iOS 15. But if you don't like that, it's easy to get it back to the top.

One of Apple's new iOS 15 features for the iPhone is the option to move the Safari search bar to the bottom of the screen. Whether you have a new iPhone 13 or you're still rocking an iPhone 7 (no shame!), having the search and address bar at the bottom can help with one-handed navigation. The new feature is a more significant change than it might seem, but it's been overshadowed by bigger additions like FaceTime call weblinks for friends on Android and Windows .

Since 2007, the Safari address bar has been at the top of the iPhone's screen, so if you're a longtime iPhone owner you're likely used to it being there. (Note that sometimes this bar is also called an address bar, other times it's called a tab bar or search bar.)

If you tried the new lower address bar position and don't like it, or accidentally moved it to the bottom, I'm here to help you move the Safari search bar back to the top.

Move the Safari search bar back to the top

There are a couple of ways to move the address bar. The first is to tap the AA button in Safari and select Show Top Address Bar . And that's it. If you want to move it back to the bottom of the screen, tap the AA button in Safari and select Show Bottom Tab Bar.

Another way to move the address bar, is to go into Settings and tap on Safari . Scroll down to the Tabs section. From there you can tap Tab Bar to have everything on the bottom. Or you can tap Single Tab to have the bar at the top of the screen.

i noticed that today when I switch tabs in safari YouTube videos stop playing unless YouTube tab is active. Is it some bug or YouTube changed something? I tried everything, rebooted my iPad mini 4, nothing helps, it just stops when I go to other tab or open new. It worked perfectly just yesterday! I just tried in on my iPhone 6 with iOS 10.2 installed, and everything works fine despite the fact that my iPhone only has 1 gab of ram. I have iOS 9.3.5 on my iPad, did YouTube crippled support for iOS 9 devices? Anyone else experience this issue?

Sorry haven't used YouTube via browser but I did read this comment so it seems it's iOS related after all since 10.2 I guess Apple had to block it because of Google not allowing it anymore. I've always used it via third party YouTube apps to keep playing sound in the background like ProTube (paid), Vimate (free). Are those apps perfect? Nope but for background playback it's almost always working.

  • Jan 24, 2017

I do have protube and it does work in background (I'm actually using it right now), however I don't find it user friendly, it's all cluttered and it also appears to consume more battery life so I'd prefer to play YouTube in safari like I did. By the way,it worked for couple of days if I'd switch to desktop view in safari, now Google killed it too, there is now no way to play it in safari in different tab. This is not just some glitch, it is deliberate crippling of functionality.

5 Essential News Plugins For Safari

Safari extensions icon

Extensions are one of the best and most convenient ways to add new functionality to Safari. They’re simple to find (just go to the Apple Extensions website  and look under the various categories), and can be installed with just one click – you don’t even need to restart Safari. If you’re one of those people that spends a lot of time surfing the web and reading all kinds of news, having the latest headlines in a special toolbar can provide a more immediate way to consume news, rather than using RSS readers or just going to the websites themselves. This article describes some of the news extensions available for Safari. It’s important to note that most of these don’t work in fullscreen mode (at least in the latest version of Safari), so unfortunately you’ll need to run Safari in the normal way or just assign it to it’s own desktop for easier management. If you install them whilst in fullscreen mode, you’ll need to exit that for the extensions to show up.

Once you’ve installed any of the extensions mentioned below, all of the toolbars can be viewed or hidden in the View menu under Extension Bars , as shown below. They may additionally have their own toolbar button (which gets added to the right of the Home icon, although you can move it). Every extension can also be individually disabled or uninstalled from the Extensions tab within Safari’s Preferences  (use the shortcut  Command + , ).

Extension bars in the view menu

1. The New York Times

The New York Times is one of the most popular American news providers and therefore a good choice to keep up to date with all thats happening across the pond and around the world. You can choose different news sources such as technology, health, business, and more. The refresh rate can be set between 5 and 30 minutes (or never), and the stories are displayed with miniature thumbnails on the toolbar. Just click any story to go directly to the web page. The NYT extension is one of the few that includes any configurable options.

New York Times Screenshot

To choose the news sources you want, open Safari’s Preferences and go to the Extensions tab. Select The New York Times in the left-hand side panel, and in the main window you’ll have the the option to choose the source, the refresh interval and other options as shown below.

New York Times Settings

2. Fox News

Fox News is one of the few news extensions that has its own toolbar button that shows/hides the toolbar itself. When it’s turned on, it displays scrolling news updates, but unfortunately there are no options to select the sources. Also note that in the View menu, the extension is listed as Menu Bar  – not as Fox News – slightly confusing but it should be fairly obvious which one to use. One of its welcome features is the search field to lookup whatever stories you’re interested in. Like most of them, just click any of the headlines to go directly to the detailed article.

Fox News extension screenshot

3. Moscow Times

The Moscow Times might seem like a strange choice for a news feed, but it’s an English language newspaper that features popular stories from Russia, Asia and the rest of the world. As such it’s quite an intriguing insight and alternative perspective on many of the most popular news stories. News items are displayed on the extension bar with thumbnails, and there’s also  Top and Latest  buttons at the far right, as well as up and down arrows to scroll through the dozens of stories on offer.

The Moscow Times Screenshot

4. Ticker Tool

Ticker Tool isn’t news per se , but it’s certainly an invaluable extension to keep you up to date with your favourite stocks and related news stories. The Ticker Tool button is added into the standard Safari toolbar, and the extension bar includes a search field to enter the stock you’re interested in (either the stock symbol such as AAPL, or the regular name such as Apple), with 3 options: Quote (to obtain the latest stock price and graphs), Transcripts (to view meeting notes and investor meeting transcripts), and SEC (to view US Securities and  Exchange Commission filings).

Ticker Tool extension screenshot

Here’s a typical example of the Transcripts feature – in this example a list of earnings call transcripts and other news is displayed.

Ticker Tool extension screenshot - transcripts button

5. Newsriver

Newsriver presents a scrolling news feed in its own extension bar – available sources include Al Jazeera, BBC, CBC, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and NHK (a Japanese news agency). There are two colour themes (grey and red), with variable scrolling speeds depending on whether the Safari window is active or not. Click on any news item to go directly to the website in question and view the complete story.

Newsriver extension screenshot

Newsriver’s options are quite simple – choose the theme and whatever news feed you want, as shown below.
