On Apple devices, the default web browser is called Safari. It shares a lot of similar features to other common browsers, like Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. But if you’re new to using Safari, you may feel a little lost because the interface is slightly different to the others.

So, here’s a beginner’s guide on how to use the Safari app to browse the web on your iPhone or iPad.

How to Search for Content in the Safari App

As with all web browsers, you’ll need to first enable your iPhone’s mobile data or connect to a Wi-Fi network to access the internet.

Then, to search in Safari, simply type a term, phrase, or URL into the Smart Search bar at the bottom of the screen and tap Go on your keyboard. The Smart Search bar is a combination of the address bar and search bar. As you type, you’ll see search suggestions based on your keyword as well as results from your bookmarks and browsing history.

How to Navigate a Webpage in Safari

Once you obtain your search results, you tap on a link you’re interested in. Now let’s look at how you can navigate the webpage once it’s loaded.

It’s not a bad browser for iPhone.

I’ve always used Safari browser for my iPhone and Chrome for Windows and don’t mind either. The only problem is now and I hope apple look at the reviews people have put is now when you put the search bar back to the top, not the bottom which they changed and go back from a webpage it now just goes straight to the top not where you left off??? If you do decide to use the new feature of the search bar at the bottom you won’t be affected by this as it does continue where you left off? Either a glitch or they now intend it to be that way?

I absolutely love Safari for countless reasons! One reason is its incredible design. I love the bottom Tab Bar on iPhone because it feels more modern and natural to me. The ability to create a new tab by a single swipe is intuitiveness at its finest. I understand that some users don’t like the Tab Bar being at the bottom, but it can be changed back to the top. I also love the design on iPad and Mac because it’s consistent between the two. Speaking of consistency, the rounded corners make using Safari a joy because it fits in with the rest of Apple’s design trends. There are also countless amazing features that I couldn’t see myself living without. For example, the customisable Start Page significantly increases my productivity and it’s a great warm welcome into the app. I’m also in love with Tab Groups. I utilise the feature heavily and I don’t know what I would do without it. However, Safari’s unparalleled commitment to user privacy and security alone makes it a great alternative to other browsers such as Chrome. Not only can it block trackers, but it can also report back to you what trackers it has prevented, which is incredibly useful. Overall, I strongly believe that Safari should be used by more users as their main browser!

This wikiHow teaches you how to customize the behavior of the Safari web browser on your iPhone or iPad. If you're using iOS 13 or later, you now have the option to choose display options for individual websites in addition to making global changes.

Changing Web Preferences by Website

• Changes you make with this method will only affect the currently-open website. If you want your preferences to affect all websites rather than just for those you customize, see the Changing Web Preferences for All Websites section instead.

• Select Ask on a feature if you'd like to be asked each time the site tries to access the feature (default).
• Select Deny if you never want the site to access the feature.
• Select Allow to always allow the site to access the feature.

• Use the sliders in the "IN SAFARI" section at the top to choose whether Siri has access to Safari.

• Tap AutoFill to adjust which information appears automatically in form fields, such as your name, address, phone number, email, and credit card info.
• Pop-up ads are blocked in Safari by default. If you'd like to see pop-up ads on websites, slide the "Block Pop-ups" switch to the Off (gray) position.
• Tap Downloads to choose where to save files and media you download from websites. You'll have the option to choose a cloud storage service or your iPhone/iPad.

• To allow sites and services to track your browsing anywhere on the web, slide the "Prevent Cross-Site Tracking" switch to the Off (gray) position. To retain your privacy, you can leave this switch in the On (green) position.

How to use Reader View in Safari on iPhone and iPad

If you like to get most of your news on the web, then you've likely struggled with reading things on your iPhone or iPad, since ads and menus can clutter up the page. Reader View in Safari allows you to view web pages without all that clutter and you can even change the font, font size, and page color to better suit your reading habits and vision.

Here's how to use Reader View in Safari on iPhone and iPad.

How to enable Reader View

When you're on a website that supports Reader View on your iPhone or iPad, the address bar at the top of the screen will say "Reader View Available" when you arrive at the site. If it's not there, then it can't be used.

• Launch Safari from your Home screen.
• Navigate to the website you'd like to read.
• Tap the Reader button on the left of the address bar. It looks like a series of stacked lines.

Reader View is now enabled. You'll notice that much of the color and animations will be removed and you'll see a simple screen of text.

To disable Reader View, just tap the Reader button again.

• Tap the A's on the right of the address bar.

• Tap either of the A's that appear in the menu to change the font to one of two sizes.
• Tap one of the eight font choices .

If you read better when text is light and the page is dark, you can change things to your liking.

• Tap one of the four page color choices : white, beige, gray, or black.

We all want fast browsing on our iPhone. Safari is the default iOS browser, and we love using it. However, for some, it may run slow or crash and provide an overall degraded browsing experience. If you are one of them, follow these tips to fix Safari running slow on iPhone and iPad.

1. Close Unnecessary Safari Tabs

If you have multiple open tabs, you can close them all in one go .

For turning off Background App Refresh, open the Settings app, and tap on General. Tap on Background App Refresh. On the next screen, you can turn it off for individual apps.

You may also disable it entirely by tapping on Background App Refresh and choosing Off.

7. Update iOS on iPhone or iPad

Safari is a core app, and its updates, fixes, and improvements are handled directly via iOS software updates. It is good to run the latest version of iOS on your device. To update, open the Settings app and tap on General. Next, tap on Software Update , and if you have a pending update, tap on Download and Install.

8. Reset Network Settings

In case, nothing helps, a reset of the network settings might come to the rescue. This will not delete any personal data. It will, however, erase saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth devices, VPN configurations, and other such network settings. Before you proceed, it is recommended that you backup your device to a computer or iCloud.

To reset the network settings, open the Settings app, and tap on General. Scroll to the end and tap on Reset.

Next, tap on Reset Network Settings. Enter your iPhone password and confirm the reset.

If you’re a Safari user, as many of us are, you might be interested in actually searching the web with Google and then seeing a list of actual web link results, without seeing any of the new AI junk, video and image recommendations, knowledge panels, related searches, suggested searches, or the other junky clutter that dominates basically every modern Google search. Indeed, once upon a time, a default search on Google actually returned web-only results! You can have that good-old web search experience again with Safari, whether you’re on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, and it’s pretty simple as you’ll see in a moment.

We recently covered a very popular trick for performing actual web searches with Google minus any of their AI regurgitation and other junk content , and while it works great for Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Epic, and Chromium-based browser users, if you’re a Safari user, you’re left out of that particular trick, because there isn’t currently a way in Safari to modify how searches are performed.

How to Actually Search the Web with Google from Safari, Minus the AI and Junk Clutter

While Safari doesn’t let you modify search parameters for search engines, it does let you change the homepage / start page, and from there you can set a Web-only Google Search site as your default home page:

• Open Safari on your Mac
• Go to the Safari menu and choose “Settings” (or “Preferences” if you’re using an older version)
• Set the following URL as your start / home page:

https://udm14.com/

• Now when you open a new Safari window, the web-only search for Google will appear via udm14.com
• Search the actual web with Google by using the search box on UDM14 as usual

With UDM14 as your home page, you can easily initiate web-only searches with Google and get web-only results again, right from Safari on any device you’re using:

You can set this up on your iPhone or iPad too if you’d like by adding the udm14.com site as a bookmark, or to your Home Screen, and opening it directly. This is necessary because, as it turns out, there is not any approach to setting a homepage in Safari for iPhone or iPad.

When you search with udm14.com you will be redirected to Google’s web-only search, and you will only see a list of web results. Yes, these are true web results, just links to websites, as we all once knew, loved, and expected when searching the web. No AI junk, none of the annoying recommendations to watch junk YouTube videos, none of the pointless images or “related searches” or “knowledge panels” or any of the other crummy gunk that clutters a default Google search.

Look at these nice and clean Google web search results! Just like the good old days!

What’s the big deal? Well, that depends on how you look at it. Google’s AI is considered by some to be deeply flawed , bizarrely racially biased and broadly biased , plus both factually inaccurate and historically inaccurate , but even if that doesn’t bother you, it also takes content from other sites without compensating them resulting in significant revenue loss for hundreds of thousands of small businesses and publishers. Perhaps you don’t care about any of that either, but you might be amused, or bothered, by the fact that Google’s AI can often be so absurdly erroneous that it’ll tell people to put glue on their pizza , drink urine for kidney stones , or eat rocks for your health (seriously, there’s no shortage of ridiculous examples ). Is this really the future of the internet that we are looking for, and what is the cause? Whether it’s because Google is “woke” according to the BBC, or said to be ruled by ideological fear , or merely moving ahead a little too fast with emerging technologies like AI , the Google search monopoly makes it difficult to find alternatives, and more imperative to get the kind of search results you actually want to see, which for many of us are just simply web results so we can find what we’re looking for ourselves. And sure, there’s Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yandex, etc, but they’re barely used in comparison, and most people don’t associate those with web search the way that Google is.

How to change your default browser on iphone and ipad.

For the first time, Apple is allowing iPhone and iPad users (that run iOS 14 or iPadOS 14) to change their default web browser app. Here's how.

Safari is a great web browser, but there's a reason why Google Chrome has the largest market share . Thankfully, as long as you're running iOS 14 , iPadOS 14 , or higher, you can set any third-party browser as the default on your iPhone or iPad.

First, open the "Settings" app. If you've lost it in a sea of icons, use Apple's built-in  Spotlight Search  to find the application.

In the Settings menu, locate the section for the browser you'd like to set as your default. For example, navigate to Settings > Chrome to set Google Chrome as your default web browser.

If the third-party browser has been updated to support Apple's default browser switching feature, you will find a "Default Browser App" option in its settings. Tap it.

Next, you'll see a list of every web browser app installed on your device that supports the default browser feature. Tap the name of the browser you'd like to use as your default.

After that, tap the "Back" button once and exit "Settings." From now on, whenever you tap a web address link, it will open in the browser app you chose.

Note that, at the time of writing, rebooting your iPhone or iPad will reset the default setting . It's not clear yet if this was designed to reset or it's a bug.

Hotmail works on iPad but is blocked on iPhone?

I received a warning about attempted compromise. I changed my hotmail password successfully and I can access my hotmail on my ipad using the ipad email and through safari browser. But when I used the right password on my iphone, it keeps saying my account is blocked. When I try to change my password again, the microsoft process keeps freezing on the iPhone.

According to your description, your issue is that your hotmail is blocked on your iPhone.

We would like to inform you that your account is currently in a normal state.

You may be using multiple devices to log into your account causing your account to be detected as abnormally logged in, you can resolve your issue by unblocking your iPhone.

You can try the following steps to unblock your account

1. To unblock your account, you need to reset your password.

2. Enter the email address of the blocked account, then enter the characters shown on the screen and select “Next”.

3. Enter the code generated by the authenticator application or select “Use other authentication options to get SMS”.

4. After entering the security code, you will need to change your password to complete the unblocking process.

Remove or delete apps from iPhone

You can easily remove or delete apps from your iPhone. If you change your mind, you can download the apps again later (if they’re still available in the App Store).

Do any of the following:

Remove an app from the Home Screen: Touch and hold the app on the Home Screen, tap Remove App, then tap Remove from Home Screen to keep it in App Library, or tap Delete App to delete it from iPhone.

Delete an app from App Library and Home Screen: Touch and hold the app in App Library, tap Delete App, then tap Delete. (See Find your apps in App Library .)

If you change your mind, you can redownload apps you’ve removed.

In addition to removing third-party apps from the Home Screen, you can remove the following built-in Apple apps that came with your iPhone:

Contacts (Contact information remains available through Phone, Messages, Mail, FaceTime, and other apps. To remove a contact, you must restore Contacts.)

FaceTime (In iOS 17.4 or later, if you remove the FaceTime app from your iPhone, or if you removed it in an earlier version of iOS before updating to iOS 17.4, you won’t be able to make or receive FaceTime calls or join SharePlay sessions on your iPhone unless you redownload the app . See Make FaceTime calls on iPhone .)

Find My (Removing this app doesn’t turn off location sharing or Find My for your device or items—it just removes the ability to view locations in the Find My app on that device.)

Note: When you remove a built-in app from your Home Screen, you also remove any related user data and configuration files. Removing built-in apps from your Home Screen can also affect other system functionality.
