Award-winning COVID-19 Safety Standards

British Airlines was one of the first airlines to undergo the COVID-19 Safety Audit by Skytrax that investigates and evaluates safety and hygiene protocols introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to enhance customer and staff safety. After a complex analysis of the hygiene and safety procedures, British Airlines received a 4-Star Covid-19 Safety Rating based on the standards provided at the airport and onboard flights :

  • Face mask policy . At all times in the airport and on board the aircraft, all passengers need to wear a face mask covering their nose and mouth, except children under the age of 11 (under the age of 2 on flights to/from the U.S.) and those who meet the government’s exemption requirements (supporting documentation may be necessary) . A face mask could last up to four hours, so make sure you bring enough for the duration of your trip. You will be asked to remove your face mask for any passport checks, but you’ll be advised when to do so by. On board, you are allowed to remove your face mask only for a reasonable time to eat or drink.
  • Minimizing contact . Online and Mobile Check-in options and self-service bag drop service can help you keep contact at the airport to a minimum. If you can’t check in online, use one of the self-service kiosks that are regularly sanitized , or go to a check-in desk where screens have been installed to protect you . Dettol sanitizing stations are positioned next to check-in kiosks and desks and throughout the airport. At selected lounges at Heathrow, Terminal 5 that are now open, British Airways introduced new measures to ensure your health and safety : contactless lounge entry, enhanced cleaning, safe distance markers, contact-free food and drink orders brought directly to the seat.
  • Boarding . British Airways introduced new boarding procedures to minimize contact when passengers take their seats . At the gate, have your boarding pass ready to scan it yourself and your passport open so that a British Airways employee can check it . Priority boarding is available only for families and customers who may need additional time to board. First Class passengers board first from the first row to the back row of the cabin. The rest of the passengers board the aircraft from the rear to the front.
  • Cleaning . Key surfaces , including seats, armrests, seat belt buckles, tray tables, toilets, and storage area, are sanitized after every flight . Aircraft are cleaned thoroughly from nose to tail every day . The air in the cabin is filtered and renewed every two to three minutes . Cabin air is made up of fresh air, drawn from outside and heated significantly above virus-killing temperatures, and air passed through HEPA filters that remove even the tiniest particles, down to microscopic bacteria and virus clusters, with over 99.9% efficiency.
  • Onboard service . Once on board the aircraft, passengers are offered Dettol anti-bacterial hygiene wipes to sanitize hands or surfaces. You should minimize moving around the cabin as much as possible. If you need help, there is a call button you can use, and a crew member will assist you at your seat. British Airways made some changes to the onboard service to reduce contact onboard , such as removing magazines and newspapers, a new food service (the Speedbird Café menu is available to pre-purchase at highlifeshop.com for short-haul flights in Euro Traveller class, menu cards are available only in First and Club World classes, special meals are available to pre-order when booking your flight), individually wrapped blankets and bedding available only on long-haul flights to guarantee cleanliness.

Flexible Booking

Understanding that travel plans need to change sometimes, British Airways introduced its book with confidence policy with flexible travel options for bookings made from March 3, 2020, onwards for journeys due to be completed by August 31, 2022 :

  • Change your dates with no additional fees . If you want to change the dates, you can do it online from Manage My Booking.
  • Change your destination with no additional fees . You need to complete the online voucher form to change your destination and dates. British Airways will cancel the booking on your behalf and email you a voucher to the value of your booking, valid until September 30, 2023.
  • Cancel your booking with no additional fees . If you need to cancel your trip, you can claim a voucher for the value of your booking . Within seven days of your application, you will receive your voucher by email that you can use as payment, or a part payment, for a future booking that must be fully completed by September 30, 2023 (departure and return) .

If your flight has been canceled, you can claim a refund.

British Airways Carry-On Restrictions: What You Need to Know!

British airways carry-on size (dimensions), british airways carry-on weight limit, rules for small regional aircraft, british airways personal item size, the tsa 3-1-1 rule, carry-on food, british airways pet policy, prohibited items and dangerous goods, more related articles…., british airways delays & cancellations: how to get compensated, guide to booking flights with british airways avios points.

If you’re planning to travel with just a carry-on , you’ll need to be up to speed with airline carry-on policies.  Specifically, the various rules and regulations each carrier has for what you can and cannot “carry on” to the plane. Each airline’s rules are different, so don’t just assume that what works for one will work for all airlines.

If you are going to be flying British Airways, they have very specific guidelines for carry-on sizes, liquids, and other unique items that you may want to bring on board.

In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about British Airways’ carry-on restrictions. This includes their carry-on size and weight limits, personal items, liquids, pets, prohibited items, and other rules and restrictions you should know before boarding your flight.

British Airways Carry-On Size and Weight Policy

British Airways allows one carry-on bag (“Cabin Bag”) and one personal item (“Hand Bag”) onboard at no charge.

British Airways Carry on size limits

British Airways’ size restrictions for carry-on baggage are 22 x 18 x 10 inches ( 56 x 45 x 25cm).

If you are not sure what size your carry-on is, British Airways does provide size check templates located at their ticket counters and gates.  But by the time you get to either of these locations, it’s too late if the bag is too big, so better always to know your bag size in advance.

British Airways Size Checker for carry-on and personal items

British Airways carry-on size limits are displayed when you check-in

British Airways requires carry-on bags to weigh less than 23 kg (51 lbs.). However, they don’t weigh your carry-on items prior to boarding, so you’re generally not going to have a problem if it’s too heavy. The weight issue applies to check baggage more than carry-on bags since they weigh your checked bags when you check in for your flight.

Recommended Carry-On Bag

If you are looking for an international-sized carry-on bag, the Travelpro 20-inch Global Expandable Spinner Carry-on is definitely one to consider. It’s durable, reasonably priced, and holds enough for shorter trips (3-5 days). Plus the spinner wheels make it very easy to get through the airport quickly and effortlessly.

Travelpro Versapack Global Carry-On 20" Expandable Spinner

Case Dimensions:

  • H: 19 in. W: 15 in. D: 7.75 in.
  • Weight: 7.3 lbs.

Fits 80% of International Airlines* as a Carry-On

If you are flying one of British Airways’ regional planes , such as an Embraer 190, it may not be possible to carry your hand baggage on board, even if it has the correct dimensions and weight. If this is the case, BA will check it in and carry it in the hold, free of charge.

If you want to make sure you have a bag that will fit, check out this article on the best carry-on bags for regional jets .

Personal items include a purse, briefcase, laptop, backpack, shopping bag, or a similar-sized item. They can have a maximum weight of 23kg (51lbs.) and up to 40 x 30 x 15cm (16 x 12 x 6 inches)

Additional items that can be carried on include:

  • A jacket and/or umbrella
  • Food or drink purchased after clearing the security checkpoint
  • Duty-free merchandise
  • Special items like strollers, child restraint seats, or assistive devices such as wheelchairs or crutches

British Airways Carry-On Liquid Policy

The rules for carry-on liquids are set by the TSA in the US and the EASA and European Commission in Europe.  British Air doesn’t have its own specific Liquids Policy, they just enforce the rules and policies of the Authorities.

  • Containers with liquids and gel-like substances may hold up to 100 ml (maximum capacity must be printed on the container).
  • All containers must be carried in a plastic bag (transparent, resealable, max. capacity of 1 liter). One bag per person.
  • The bag must be presented separately at security. Take your liquids out of your carry-on baggage at the security screening point and present them separately. In exceptional cases, liquids may be opened in the course of security checks and removed from their outer packaging.
  • Liquid duty-free goods purchased at an international airport or on board an aircraft outside the EU must be transported in a tamper-proof, certified bag on connecting flights via an EU airport. The proof of purchase must be inside the bag and the bag must be sealed by the retailer.
  • Medicines and special food (e.g. baby food) can be carried outside the plastic bag and must also be presented at security.

Below is a table that provides some examples of Non-solid Food and Personal Items that are considered “liquids”:

Each passenger may carry liquids, gels, and aerosols in travel-size containers that are 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters and are enclosed in a sealed, one-quart-size bag. Common travel items that must comply with the 3-1-1 liquids rule include toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, perfume, mouthwash, deodorant, and lotion.

Any liquid that does not meet the TSA 3-1-1 rule will either have to be checked with your luggage or will be thrown away at the security checkpoint.

Exceptions to this rule are certain medications and baby food/child nourishment .

The TSA also sets the rules for what type of food you can bring on the plane . There are two different scenarios pertaining to food:

  • The food you bring with you from home, and
  • The food you buy at the airport after you have gone through security.

When bringing food with you from home, an important thing to note is the classification of liquid vs. solid foods.

The general rule is “If you can spill it, spread it, spray it, pump it, or pour it, then it’s considered a liquid or gel.”   This means your food may be considered a liquid and will fall under the TSA 3-1-1 liquids rule , which mandates that any liquid, gel, cream, aerosol, or paste in a carry-on must be 3.4 ounces or less, and fit in one quart-size resealable bag (only one such bag is allowed per passenger).

Here’s a link to the TSA website advising what food can be brought with you on your British Airways flight.  This applies to food you are bringing from home through security. Once you get through security, you can bring just about any food on the plane that you buy at the airport.

As a general rule, British Airways does not allow pets, including emotional support animals, in the main cabin, they must travel in the holding area. However, they will allow recognized service dogs to travel with you.

There are certain items that are considered dangerous and classified as a hazardous material. Dangerous goods are prohibited from both your carry-on and checked bag on all flights. These rules are not specific to any airline and are mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Items considered  “dangerous goods”  are prohibited under British Airways’ carry-on policy and include the following:

  • Firearms and ammunition
  • Stunning devices, mace, tear gas, and  pepper spray
  • Poisonous, infectious, or radioactive substances
  • Sharp or pointed objects (knives, swords, cutting instruments,  razors , ice skates, carpet knives, metal scissors, box cutters, or similar items)
  • Camping equipment containing flammable liquids or gasses
  • Flammable liquids, including gasoline and kerosene
  • Self-Balancing devices such as hoverboards, including electric skateboards, balance boards, and gravity boards
  • Medical or liquid oxygen
  • Torch lighters , lighter fluid, strike-anywhere matches, and fire starters
  • Wet-cell batteries

The following items  are not considered “dangerous goods”  and are allowed when packaged properly, in accordance with FAA regulations

  • Hiking or trekking poles
  • Hair dryer/Straightener
  • Sunscreen/bug spray
  • Food as a carry on
  • Fishing hooks
  • Fragile glass items

A complete list can be found on the FAA website and the TSA website .

One more way to find them is with the British Airways summary of restricted items.

British Airways Carry-On Size and Fees

British Airways does not charge a fee for carry-on baggage that meets their size requirements. If your bag is too large and does not meet British Airways’ carry-on restrictions, you may be charged a fee to gate-check it.

British airways' baggage allowance: 5 things you need to know.

  • British Airways offers a generous baggage allowance for passengers in all travel classes, with weights ranging from 23kg to 32kg per bag.
  • Carry-on bags must adhere to size restrictions, but weight restrictions are more lenient and bags can weigh up to 23kg.
  • Oversized or heavy items may incur additional charges or need to be shipped as cargo, and passengers should check with partner airlines for their specific baggage allowances.

Britain’s national airline, British Airways, is known for its hospitality and service on the ground and in the air. Part of the airline's service is its baggage allowance for air passengers. As a full-service airline, British Airways takes pride in offering a generous baggage allowance in all travel classes.

Simple Flying provides baggage information essential for passengers traveling with the airline, as highlighted by British Airways.

1 British Airways checked baggage allowance

The allowance varies based on the fare type and cabin.

The checked baggage allowance differs based on the fare type and cabin. Passengers traveling on the Economy Basic fare do not get a free checked baggage allowance. Standard Economy and Premium Economy passengers are entitled to checked baggage allowance, up to 23 kg (51 lb) per bag. Business and First class passengers receive a generous weight allowance of up to 32 kg (70 lb) per bag.

All passengers can purchase additional baggage before or upon check-in. Notably, the cost of additional baggage and the number of bags that can be purchased depending on the class of travel and destination. British Airways also follows a rather strict baggage size policy for checked baggage.

2 British Airways carry-on size

The airline restricts passengers for handbag and cabin bag sizes.

British Airways provides a specific allowance for carry-on bags. Passengers must particularly follow size restrictions for carry-on bags. The airline provides cabin bags and handbag dimensions (height, width, and depth). However, unlike many large international airlines that weigh carry-on bags upon check-in, British Airways allows generous weight for the carry-on bags.

Which Airlines Have The Most Generous Checked Baggage Allowances?

A roundup of base economy fare luggage limits, and the costs you'll incur to bring more.

Passengers can take up to 23 kg (51 lb) in the carry-on as long as the size of the bag is within the allowed dimensions. The airline may penalize oversized cabin bags, the cost of which depends on fare type and destination. It is noteworthy that the listed dimensions include straps and wheels, particularly on the cabin bags.

3 British Airways baggage contents allowance

Out-of-gauge or oversized items must be treated differently.

The airline allows passengers to travel with almost anything (except for restricted items), including sports gear and music instruments. When traveling with sports or music equipment, passengers must ensure that the size of the equipment is within the allowable limit. Small equipment can be taken onboard as a carry-on bag.

Oversized equipment can be allowed, but passengers may need to take additional steps. Anything larger or heavier must be secured properly and shipped as cargo. Other out-of-gauge pieces, such as snow sports bags, must be dropped off at the oversized baggage area at least 90 minutes before the flight time.

4 Extra weight or size

The airline charges for overweight or oversized bags.

The extra checked baggage allowance depends on the space available in the aircraft. One may wonder how much space one or two extra bags would require in an aircraft. However, airplanes must follow precise weight and balance to ensure a safe flight.

The cost of extra checked baggage depends on the class of travel and destination. Passengers are always restricted to the number of bags/pieces they can check in. In terms of carry-on bags, most passengers are allowed to carry up to two items. According to the airline,

“If you have more than two pieces of hand baggage, or they’re over the permitted size , you may have to put your larger bags into the hold as checked baggage.”

Putting the carry-on bags in the luggage hold also means extra cost per piece.

5 Baggage allowance on partner airlines

Varies based on the flight number.

British Airways’ baggage policy on partner airlines varies based on the ticket type, the longest flight in the itinerary, and the first airline the passenger checks in to.

According to the airline,

“If your flight number begins with anything other than ‘BA’ (e.g. AA123456X), you’re flying with one of our partners and your baggage allowances may be different. If a journey with connecting flights includes ‘BA’ and other airline codes, your baggage allowance is generally determined by the airline that operates the longest flight in your itinerary.”

British Airways Is Now Letting American Express Cardholders Earn Tier Points On Spending

UK-based British Airways cardholders have the opportunity to reach elite status quicker now.

British Airways recommends passengers on partner airlines to check with the airline operating the first and/or the longest leg of the journey to avoid any confusion.

British Airways is one of the largest airlines when it comes to flying across the Atlantic, offering travelers the option to "cross the pond" in options including economy to true first class. It's the class of service that determines your British Airways baggage allowance — from no free checked bags up to three checked bags of 70 pounds each.

Let's dive into the details of British Airways' checked baggage and carry-on bag policies and fees.

How to find your British Airways baggage allowance

If you've already booked your flight, the easiest way to find your baggage allowance is by logging into your reservation via Manage My Booking . After entering your booking reference number and last name, select your flight to see the details of your booking. As shown in the example below, under "Your flight choices," you'll find your seat selection and baggage allowance.

Whether you've booked a flight or not, you can always check your baggage allowance using the baggage allowance tool on British Airways' website . You'll need to enter the route, departure date, ticketing date and booking class.

As an example, I searched for a premium economy seat on a flight from New York to London on Feb. 1, 2024 (ticketed on August 1, 2023). This ticket would get two free checked bags up to 51 pounds (23 kilograms) measuring up to 35 x 30 x 17 inches (90 x 75 x 43 centimeters).

requirements for travel on british airways

Generally, the British Airways baggage policy depends on what fare type you booked:

Economy Basic: No checked bags.

Economy: One checked bag up to 51 pounds (23 kilograms).

Premium economy: Two checked bags up to 51 pounds each.

Business: Two checked bags of up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms) each.

First: Three checked bags up to 70 pounds each.

British Airways overweight and oversized baggage fees

You may need to pay an overweight bag fee if your bag weighs more than 51 pounds (23 kilograms) and you're flying in economy or premium economy. The overweight bag fee depends on the currency used in the country that you're departing from. The primary options are:

65 Great British pounds.

100 U.S. dollars.

100 Canadian dollars.

If you're departing from a country that uses a different local currency, the GBP amount will be converted to that local currency.

Note that British Airways doesn't accept any checked bags weighing more than 70 pounds (32 kilograms).

However, British Airways does accept some oversized bags — those measuring larger than 35 x 30 x 17 inches (90 x 75 x 43 centimeters) — as part of your standard baggage allowance and without additional fees. However, you'll need to check these "out-of-gauge bags" at a special bag drop at least 90 minutes before departure.

The maximum size for British Airways checked baggage is 74 x 29 x 25 inches (190 x 75 x 65 centimeters).

What are British Airways carry-on bag size dimensions?

All British Airways tickets include a "cabin bag" and "hand bag." The maximum weight and dimensions differ between these two types of British Airways carry-on bags.

Your "hand bag" — also known as a "personal item" on other airlines — can measure up to 16 x 12 x 6 inches (40 x 30 x 15 centimeters) and weigh up to 51 pounds (23 kilograms). This bag is guaranteed to fly in the cabin with you. So be sure to pack your essential items in this bag — such as electronics, medicines, travel documents and battery packs.

Meanwhile, your "cabin bag" can measure up to 22 x 18 x 10 inches (56 x 45 x 25 centimeters) and weigh up to 51 pounds (23 kilograms). This bag may need to be checked depending on how full your flight is, so don't pack anything critical in it.

How to increase your British Airways checked baggage allowance

What if the current British Airways baggage allowance isn’t cutting it for your trip? Here are a couple of ways that you can boost your baggage allowance with British Airways.

Oneworld alliance elite status

Travelers with Sapphire or Emerald Oneworld elite status get an extra checked bag on most British Airways fares. If you have Oneworld Sapphire elite status, you'll get two checked bags up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms) each, regardless of which cabin you booked. Oneworld Emerald travelers get one additional checked bag up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms), plus up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms) on all other checked bags.

Critically, British Airways opts out of providing these Oneworld elite benefits on its "hand baggage-only" basic economy fares. Travelers who book these basic economy fares won't get a free checked bag regardless of their elite status.

For reference, the following airline elite statuses grant Oneworld Sapphire status:

British Airways Silver.

American Airlines Platinum .

Alaska Airlines MVP Gold .

And the following elite status members get Oneworld Emerald benefits:

British Airways Gold.

American Airlines Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum .

Alaska Airlines MVP Gold 75K and MVP Gold 100K .

Remember that you can get American Airlines AAdvantage elite status solely from spending on an eligible AAdvantage credit card. That means you can potentially spend your way to free baggage allowance on British Airways without taking a single flight.

» Learn more: American Airlines Loyalty Points: How to earn AAdvantage elite status

Upgrade your booking class

If you're facing steep extra baggage fees, it may be worth checking the cost to upgrade your ticket to a premium cabin . Upgrading from standard economy to premium economy will get you a second free checked bag up to 51 pounds (23 kilograms).

Meanwhile, switching from premium economy to business class will boost your per-bag allowance from 51 pounds (23 kilograms) to 70 pounds (32 kilograms) each. And upgrading from business class to first class gets you a third checked bag of up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms).

Check the terms associated with your ticket to ensure you're actually getting the additional baggage allowance as part of the upgrade.

Final thoughts on British Airways checked baggage allowance

British Airways includes a free carry-on bag and personal item with all tickets. However, you won't be able to check a bag for free if you book one of its cheapest basic economy fares. All other fares include at least one checked bag of up to 51 pounds (23 kilograms) — or up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms) on business and first class fares.

Oneworld elite members may get an additional checked bag on British Airways, depending on their status tier and the booking class. However, even top-tier elites can't avoid British Airways' restriction on basic economy fares.

For children aged 2 to 11, British Airways provides the same baggage allowance that adults are given for carry-on items. If you’re bringing a child below 2 years old, you’re allowed to carry a second bag containing nappies, a changing mat, and baby food.

The additional bag must not exceed the standard carry-on size limit of 22 x 18 x 10 inches (56 x 45 x 25) cm.

Can I bring a backpack and a carry-on bag at the same time on British Airways?

Yes, British Airways allows each passenger to bring one personal item and one piece of carry-on baggage at no extra cost. Personal items include backpacks, handbags, laptop bags, umbrellas, and briefcases.

Your baggage weight allowance

Our standard checked baggage allowance is 23kg per bag. How many checked bags you’re allowed will depend on your booking, cabin class and Executive Club Tier status. All tickets on British Airways, BA Cityflyer and BA Euroflyer include a cabin bag and hand bag.

You can check in more bags than your ticket permits when you pay to increase your baggage allowance.

If you are travelling on our hand baggage only (Economy Basic) fare, you are charged extra to put any bags into the hold as these fares do not include checked baggage.

The cost of each additional hold bag depends on your destination and how many more bags you want to check in over your hold allowance.

See your baggage allowance and cost of extra bags  using the calculator. More bags can only be paid for and carried when space is available, and excess baggage is permitted, on your flight. In some destinations, additional local taxes may also apply for additional bags carried in excess of your ticketed allowance.

The best price for adding to your checked baggage allowance is found through your  Manage My Booking  before you get to the airport. You can pay by card, Avios from your Executive Club account or a combination of the two. Charges for extra bags checked in at the airport are not discounted and must be paid by card.

If you have more than two pieces of hand baggage, or they’re  over the permitted size , your larger bags may have to go into the hold as checked bags. Each one counts towards your total hold baggage allowance and could be charged as excess baggage if you already have bags checked in.

Label all your checked bags inside and out with your name, mobile number and/or email address.

Booked through a travel agency/online travel website? The option to pay for additional bags will only be available once the booking has been finalised by the agent. Contact them directly if you cannot access Manage My Booking.

If your journey includes a flight with another airline, the number of checked bags allowed per customer may be different. Check before you fly.

British Airways will refund any pre-payment of the extra baggage charge that is cancelled online before check-in. British Airways is unable to accept any refund claim, or any changes to the pre-payment of extra baggage, once the flight has departed. Unless otherwise stated, British Airways will only make a refund to the credit card used to pre-pay the extra baggage charge. Delayed, lost or damaged extra baggage will be dealt with in accordance with the  General Conditions of Carriage , clauses 15 and 16.

If you have more than two pieces of hand baggage, or they’re over the permitted size , you may have to put your larger bags into the hold as checked baggage.

When you’ve used your free checked baggage allowance, you’ll have to pay to put any extra bags into the hold. Check your baggage allowance using the calculator below. Please note, the carriage of excess baggage is subject to availability. In some destinations, additional local taxes may also apply.

If your journey includes a flight with another airline, their allowances may be different. Please check before you fly.

If your checked baggage weighs more than your allowance, you may have to pay a heavy bag charge. Check your baggage allowance in the calculator.

We charge 65 GBP / 75 EUR / 100 USD / 100 CAD per overweight bag and one-way journey. If you’re flying from a country that uses a different local currency, the GBP amount will be converted to the local currency. In some destinations, additional local taxes may also apply.

At many airports, including London Heathrow, London Gatwick and in North America, you can only pay using a credit or debit card. Cash is not accepted and Avios cannot be used for this payment.

British Airways’ 23kg baggage weight limit applies to each bag and can’t be split between multiple bags. Bags over 32kg won’t be accepted as checked baggage.

If your journey includes a flight with another airline, their baggage allowances may be different. Please check before you fly .

Baggage FAQ

The maximum dimensions for an oversize bag in the hold are 190 x 75 x 65 cm.

A bag larger than the standard size, but within these maximum dimensions, is known as an oversize or out-of-gauge bag. It’s accepted as part of your checked baggage allowance, but tell us you’re bringing it, and check it in early, as it may need individual handling.

Let us know when you book, or at least 48 hours before your flight, by using the online chat on our Help page  especially if your oversize baggage item is sports equipment , such as a bike, skis or a golf bag.

Also, any oversize bag must be checked in at the out-of-gauge bag drop at least 90 minutes (one and a half hours) before your flight to ensure it has the best chance of travelling with you.

You cannot pool, share or combine your checked baggage allowance with another traveller, even someone in your travel party.

For security reasons, you must only check in bags that you've packed yourself. You are responsible for any bag that is linked to your name in the booking.

For any single bag that is over the maximum weight or number allowed on your ticket, you may be charged a heavy bag or extra bag charge.

On journeys with connecting flights that use a single booking reference, even if it includes other airline codes, your baggage allowance is generally determined by the airline that operates the longest flight in your itinerary.

You can usually check in your bags to arrive at your final destination if:

  • All your flights are under a single booking reference and ticket number, or
  • Your flights are with one world airlines under a single booking reference, even if you have separate ticket numbers.
  • Check in your bags for your first flight.
  • Collect your bags when you land – you may need to go through customs.
  • Go to Departures and check your bags in again for your domestic flight.
  • Collect your bags at your final destination.

If you’ve booked separate flights with different booking references to get to your final destination each flight is considered a separate journey. This applies even if all your flights are with British Airways, BA Cityflyer and BA Euroflyer.

You’ll need to check your bags in for each separate flight. Make sure to leave enough time between each flight to do this and get to your departure gate for the next leg of your journey. Simply follow these steps:

  • Collect your bags when you land - you may need to go through customs.
  • Go to departures and check your bags in again for your next flight.

Please be aware that on journeys with separate tickets and different booking references, your bags will not be transferred on to your next flight as it is considered a separate journey.

In case of delay, cancellation or other disruption to your initial flight, when you hold a separate booking on a different reference for your next flight, airlines are limited in the assistance they can give you for your onward journey/subsequent flight, just as they have no obligation to automatically check your baggage through to your next flight as each booking is considered a separate contract.

British Airways, BA Cityflyer or BA Euroflyer infant baggage allowance for a baby under 24 months without a seat, regardless of cabin, includes a 23kg bag checked into the hold. No extra baggage allowance can be purchased on a ticket for an infant without a seat.

There is no checked baggage allowance for you or your infant if you are both travelling on a hand baggage only (Basic) fare, and any additional hold baggage allowance cannot be bought for your infant.

Children, and infants with a seat, have the same free baggage allowance as adults.  Find out what other items you can check in for your family.

The above allowances apply to British Airways, BA Cityflyer or BA Euroflyer flights only.

You, as the Executive Club Member, must be travelling on the booking for those on your booking to get these benefits.

These allowances are not available on group bookings or to infants travelling without their own seat. Infants get one 23kg checked bag, no matter their cabin of travel.

Travel packages for students holding study visas, or similar official identification, may be available on some of our routes. You should search for student fares from the local ba.com website of the country where you will start your journey.

If no student travel offer is currently available for your journey, your ticket will still have our baggage allowance relevant to your route, so long as it is not an economy basic fare where there is no checked baggage allowance .

We don’t offer any extra free baggage allowance specifically for students on any other fares, but we do have discounted online rates for extra bags if you need to take more baggage on your flight: check our extra bag charge calculator .

If you are travelling on any specialist student fare, you must have your current official international student identification with you when you travel, or you could be refused carriage.

Duty-free purchases count towards your hand baggage allowance, so please store them inside your bag before boarding your flight. If your gifts or duty-free bags take you over the hand baggage allowance, your extra bags may be checked into the hold. If you’ve already used your free checked baggage allowance, you’ll have to pay for extra bags in the hold. If you pack wrapped gifts or presents in your bags, either those checked into the hold or in the cabin, they may need to be opened by airport security to check their contents.

You must be able to turn on any electronic items you want to take into the cabin, so please ensure all your devices are charged before you leave home.

Items that aren’t charged will need to be packed into your checked baggage and travel in the hold. You can put laptops in your checked baggage, however any spare device batteries and power packs must be carried in your hand baggage in the cabin.

You can also  purchase Wi-Fi  on board to stream your favourite TV shows or catch up on work while you travel.

If you need to take regular medication, it’s important to pack enough for your personal use during your flight into your smaller item of hand baggage. It’s guaranteed to travel with you in the cabin. Avoid packing it in your larger cabin bag as you may be asked to put it into the hold on busy flights. Additional medication for personal use at your destination can be packed in your checked baggage.

We recommend you carry a copy of the prescription for your medication to avoid delays at security or customs.

If you need to take essential medical supplies for your own use on your journey, like dialysis fluid, colostomy bags or liquid food, you can pack these into bags to be checked into the hold.

These items are in addition to your free baggage allowance, and you won’t be charged so long as:

  • Any additional bag only contains your medical supplies, and
  • You can show a letter from a medical professional confirming your need of these items

Please see our information on travelling with health conditions for the number of bags you can travel with and further advice.

There aren’t any limits to the weight or number of items of medical equipment you can carry with you for your journey, though they may need our permission to be brought on board . We recommend that you always carry a letter from a medical professional stating that you need the medical equipment on board or at your destination. This includes equipment like a CPAP machine, nebulisers, insulin pumps or a portable oxygen concentrator (POC),

If your journey includes a flight with another airline , their policies may be different. Please check before you fly.

It’s free to take wheelchairs, mobility aids, assistive devices and related equipment if they’re for your personal use and within size limits. Find out more .

Travelling on partner airlines

If your flight number begins with anything other than ‘BA’ (e.g. AA123456X), you’re flying with one of our partners and your baggage allowances may be different.

If a journey with connecting flights includes ‘BA’ and other airline codes, your baggage allowance is generally determined by the airline that operates the longest flight in your itinerary.

Homeward bound: Cristo Foufas in Barcelona before his easyJet flight home

Cristo Foufas is a man with a mission. The broadcaster has a Sunday morning programme to present from the TalkTV studio in London. So when he was invited to a wedding in Barcelona taking place on Friday, he made sure to book a British Airways flight that would get him back to Heathrow in good time on Saturday. But like 25,000 other passengers on BA this weekend, his flight was cancelled at short notice.

British Airways blames bad weather for the grounding of more than 100 departures and arrivals on Friday, with many more on Saturday – including Cristo’s – cancelled in response to a reduction in the “flow rate” of arrivals.

BA holds the majority of precious landing and take-off slots at London Heathrow , the busiest two-runway airport in the world. If there is disruption at LHR, European airlines can cope very easily: for Air France, KLM and Lufthansa, Heathrow operations are only a small part of the operation.

But when things kick off at the British Airways main base, 100 per cent of its flights are potentially affected. So the carrier is bound to be more susceptible to disruption at Heathrow than anyone else – as it proved on Saturday.

At least 60 domestic and European flights were cancelled, all of them by BA. Given the vulnerability, how British Airways responds is crucial.

I can easily state Cristo’s rights under European air passengers’ rights rules: he should immediately be offered a flight the same day, with meals provided until he can get on his way. Should an overnight stay be necessary, the airline is responsible for finding and providing accommodation for him in the Catalan capital. Curiously, BA failed in both respects. The airline rebooked him on a Sunday flight that would get him to London long after his show had finished and neglected to add: “We recognise you’re away from home, so we’ve booked you a hotel.”

An overnight stay was irrelevant. “I’ve now booked with easyJet instead as the flight BA offered wouldn’t get me home in time for my TalkTV show,” he told me from Barcelona. EasyJet came up with a seat, dynamically priced at £300 – almost as much as he had paid for the original British Airways return ticket. Cristo will be able to claim the difference back from BA. But why should he have to bother?

The answer comes down to two factors: complexity and complacency.

  • Complexity: the two most obvious alternatives to British Airways are easyJet and Ryanair. BA can delve into the reservations systems for “legacy” carriers such as KLM and Lufthansa and find replacement flights for stranded passengers, often involving connections in Amsterdam, Frankfurt or Munich. But neither of the big low-cost airlines has any interest in opening up their inventory to other carriers – figuring, probably correctly, that they will Hoover up distressed passengers anyway. British Airways could in theory set up an operation to find alternative flights manually for stranded travellers. But since during this dose of disruption average “hold times” on the phone lines were close to an hour, the chances of BA funding hundreds more staff to deal with the odd bout of disruption looks slim.
  • Complacency: All the UK airlines know that the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is unlikely to take action if they fail in their obligation to provide the “best fit” replacement for a cancelled flight. The CAA has robustly rapped the knuckles of Wizz Air, but that was for failing to deal properly with the “pay and reclaim” process – leaving some passengers many hundreds of pounds out of pocket. But the aviation regulator looks content to allow airlines to shrug off their duty of care, so long as they eventually stump up for the costs of self-service rescue.

So where does that leave Cristo? Cheesed off. “I’m incredibly frustrated with BA,” he says. “I book our national carrier as there’s a perception it’s reliable – but all too often now there are delays, cancellations and no one on hand to help.”

At least now you know the ground rules if you’re grounded. Just make sure that credit card has plenty of headroom.
