Universal Studios Japan: the ever-evolving theme park

I'm not what you'd call a theme park nut. I've been to a few - mostly in Europe. I'm not a fan of stomach-churning rollercoasters designed to push you to your limits, but pretty much everything else I'm up for and enjoy.

But, if you do like stomach-churning rollercoasters, Universal Studios Japan has those . If you don't, there's still loads more worth visiting for.

I first visited Universal Studios Japan in 2002. Just past the 1st anniversary of its opening in March 2001. Here's my wife and I during that first visit - with Rocky the Flying Squirrel from Rocky and Bullwinkle .

Developers teamed up with key big names to ensure the reality matched their dreams for the park, including Shigeru Miyamoto creator of Mario and Creative Fellow at Nintendo and Mark Woodbury, President of Universal Creative.

Super Nintendo World comprises expansive and multilevel environments filled with state-of-the-art rides, interactive areas, restaurants and shops selling an array of gifts and souvenirs as brightly coloured as they are bountiful.

Latest Update: Jurassic Park closed for renovations until early 2025

USJ has announced major renovations to Jurassic Park - The Ride . These began on Monday, September 4, 2023, when the ride closed and it isn't expected to reopen until early 2025.

TIP: If you reserve an attraction, other reservations will be possible only after the reservation time of the already reserved attraction.

3.) Timed-Entry Tickets (The Wizarding World of Harry Potter/Super Nintendo World)

Have someone from your group take the Studio Passes of all the members of your group to the Timed-Entry Ticket booth in Central Park. Select you desired time of entry on the ticket machine to receive your Timed-Entry Ticket (one per group).

4.) Single Rider

By riding separate from your party, you can reduce waiting times. This service is not available on certain days or at certain hours during the day. For availability and other requirements, please ask a crew member at the attraction.

5.) Child Switch

A handy system allowing you to take turns to enjoy attractions that children cannot ride. It enables guests with children/companions who do not meet an attraction’s height or other requirements to take turns and enjoy the attraction without waiting in line again. Ask a staff member at the attraction for details.

Universal Studios Japan

Universal Studios Japan (USJ) was the first theme park under the Universal Studios brand to be built in Asia. Opened in 2001 in the Osaka Bay Area , the theme park has been expanded over the years and is one of the most visited amusement parks in Japan.

Universal Studios Japan currently has ten sections: Hollywood, New York, San Francisco, Jurassic Park, Waterworld, Amity Village, Universal Wonderland, Minion Park, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World. Visitors are able to enjoy many amusement rides, ranging from child-friendly carousels to thrilling roller coasters and simulators based on popular movies such as the Minions, Shrek and Jurassic Park.

In addition to rides, the theme park offers many opportunities to take pictures with popular characters' mascots such as Snoopy, Hello Kitty and the Muppets. There are also various shows put on every day, including a night parade featuring illuminated floats.

Just outside the park's gates is Universal Citywalk Osaka , a shopping mall with multiple hotels and many restaurants and shops, including stores selling Universal Studios merchandise and Osaka souvenirs. Furthermore, the Osaka Takoyaki Museum, which is essentially a collection of several popular takoyaki vendors, is located on the mall's fourth floor.

Getting there and around

The park's entrance gate is located a five minute walk from Universal City Station on the JR Yumesaki Line (also referred to as JR Sakurajima Line). From Osaka Station , there are several direct trains per hour (15 minutes, 190 yen) and many more connections that require an easy transfer at Nishikujo Station. From Kansai Airport , take a JR airport rapid to Nishikujo Station and transfer to the JR Yumesaki Line to Universal City Station (75 minutes, 1210 yen).

Universal Studios Japan is connected by bus to Kansai Airport (50-70 minutes, 1800 yen, hourly) and Itami Airport (45 minutes, 940 yen, hourly). Some overnight buses from other cities across Japan also stop at the Universal Studios Japan.

A ferry service named "Captain Line" connects the Universal Studios Japan with the Osaka Aquarium (10 minutes, 900 yen one way, 1700 yen roundtrip, 1-2 ferries per hour). A combination ticket for the aquarium and the ferry ride can be purchased for 3400 yen (one way) or 4200 yen (roundtrip).

Planning your first trip to Universal Studios Japan can be a bit confusing – so here’s all the advice and tips you need to make it go more smoothly in one handy blog post!

When to Visit

The first thing that will make a difference to your day at USJ is when you visit, so, here’s what you need to know.

1. Avoid the Busy Times

There is a Crowd Calendar for USJ, but I don’t think it’s as accurate for the precise numbers as the Tokyo Disney one. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t get any clues as to when things might be busy.

Like Tokyo Disney, most of the guests at USJ are locals rather than international tourists, and so the busy days follow many of the same patterns as Disney. So, avoid main holidays like Golden Week and New Year, Spring Break, and Japanese school holidays. We have a full list of those here.

September/October can also be busier at USJ because they have their special Halloween Horror Nights events each evening. See more specific details about that here.

2024-2025 Crowds Update

Two things will also increase crowds at USJ in the next 12 months. Firstly, the new Donkey Kong area is opening in ‘late 2024’, which will increase crowds. Then, on April 13th, 2025, the Osaka Expo opens. This will run until October 13th, 2025, and is expected to bring over 28 million tourists to Osaka over the six months of the event. I would also expect crowds at USJ to be higher during this time.

If your trip dates will be affected by either of the above, you’ll definitely want to read the section on skipping queues below.

2. Then Pick the Quiet Days

Weekends are always busier than weekdays, so Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday are generally the quietest days of the week to visit USJ.

Buying Tickets

There a few different tickets and passes for USJ, so here’s the basics…

3. Everyone Has to Have a Studio Pass

This is the name for the basic entry ticket that gets you in through the gates. You can also buy Express Passes, which help you jump the queues. However, some people think that the Express Pass also includes entry—it doesn’t. You need both a Studio Pass and an Express Pass to get in.

Our longer guide to USJ ticket types provides more details about both and the meaning of things like A,B, and C-type tickets .

rakuten travel universal studios japan

4. You Can Buy Multi-Day Passes

There are three types of Studio Pass: one-day tickets, 1.5-day passes, which let you in at 3 p.m. on the first day of your pass and all day on the second and two-day passes, which cover two full days.

5. You Can Buy on the Gate

Unlike Tokyo Disney Resort, where you have to buy your tickets in advance, you can buy USJ tickets at the gate. This allows you to pick days with better weather or plan your schedule around your energy levels.

However, there are a couple of reasons why this might not be the best plan—there are a few special tickets that you might be able to buy in advance that give you a head start on the crowds (more on those below), the park might sell out, and you have pretty much no chance of getting an Express Pass at the last minute. It also means queueing twice.

Even if you only choose to buy tickets a day or two before, I’d suggest buying them in advance.

Queue outside Universal Studios Japan at 3pm for the 1.5 day entry pass. About 100 people stand in a section of the queue.

6. Or Tickets Go on Sale Two Months Before

Both Studio Passes and Express Passes go on sale two months before the date you want to enter the park – so, for April 12th, for example, you’d buy them on February 12th.

Sometimes, Express Passes don’t stick to this schedule – this is usually when they adjust what the passes contain for some reason. For example, if they’ve added new ride overlays (more on that in the rides section) or a big ride is under maintenance for a long period.

7. The Time is a Mystery

One of the questions I’m asked most in my USJ planning Facebook Group is exactly when the USJ tickets go on sale. Usually, there isn’t an official fixed time – nor have I seen any consensus on one from various Japan groups or my experience checking on passes.

Recently, with the messed up Express Pass schedule, they have announced a time of sale – 12 pm (noon) Japanese time. That doesn’t always follow on a normal daily release, though – I’ve bought my tickets at 8am Japanese time before now.

Where to Buy Tickets

You can buy tickets directly from USJ on their webpage or app. They also have a list of official third-party suppliers, including Klook and KK Day. Here’s how to decide where to buy yours…

8. Klook Can Be Better For Studio Passes

This is different from what I would have told you 18 months ago – but there are three reasons why I say it now. The first is that Klook will always take your credit card, as like many Japanese websites, the USJ ticket store or app can have trouble with some foreign cards. But, more importantly, Klook sells two types of Studio Passes that can save you time – or money.

The first is called the Early Entry Pass, and, as the name suggests, it will get you into the park 15 minutes before the main queue. This can help you get to the park’s big rides first or increase your chances of getting a timed entry into Super Nintendo World. More of that in a minute.

The second is called Studio Pass + SNW. This can save you a lot of money if Super Nintendo World is your main reason for going to the park, as it gives you a guaranteed timed entry. Normally, you have to get an Express Pass to get this, which costs much more than this.

These tickets don’t appear daily, and they sell out quickly, so if you see them, snap them up. You can find them on the Klook Studio Pass page here.

rakuten travel universal studios japan

9. Check This With Third Party Sellers

There have been rare instances where third-party sellers sell Express Passes but do not get enough from USJ to fulfil all the orders. This doesn’t happen often, and the last time it did, people buying directly from USJ also missed out, as there was a total system crash from everyone trying to buy at once.

Now, don’t panic. If you’ve bought your passes from Klook, for example, – so long as your order says confirmed, you have nothing to worry about. But if your order, of any kind from Klook (or any of the other third party sellers), says pending for more than about 12 hours, double check with them that nothing is awry.

Entering the Park

The big day has arrived – here’s what you need to know…

10. Official Times Mean Nothing!

The park might say it opens at 9:00 a.m., but it probably won’t. It can open any time up to an hour before this. If you want to beat the crowds, make sure you line up at least an hour early.

11. Early Entry Isn’t a USJ Hotel Perk

Well, not for everyone, anyway. Some packages with Japanese tour companies can include it, but generally, even if you’re staying at one of the official USJ hotels, you aren’t guaranteed early entry unless you specifically have it booked. That’s another reason why that Klook Early Entry Ticket is a bonus.

rakuten travel universal studios japan

12. There’s No Readmission

Officially, USJ says you can’t go in and out of the park. Unofficially, I have had my hand stamped on less busy days, so they can sometimes allow it. But don’t assume it’s going to happen. Assume that once you’re in, you’re in. For these two reasons, I don’t think you need to stay at the USJ hotels unless you really want to.

Super Nintendo World

This is inside Universal Studios Japan and included in your Studio Pass entry ticket, but it requires an extra step to get inside. The last time I went, a very upset Spanish couple in the queue in front of me didn’t realise this until someone tried to check their ticket. So, the most important thing to know about Super Nintendo World is…

13. You Can’t Just Walk In

Because the area is relatively new and very popular, you have to have what’s known as a timed entry ticket to get in here. There are three ways to get one of these – getting into the park early and securing it via the app, buying the ticket I mentioned above that includes it, or, buying an Express Pass that includes it.

There is also a small window of opportunity to get into SNW before the timed entry system starts. To do this, you must be in the park soon after opening and go straight to the land.

To learn more about these methods, check out our longer guide to getting into Super Nintendo World.

rakuten travel universal studios japan

14. US Power Bands Do Work

There are only two rides in Super Nintendo World, but there is a game you can play around the area using Power Bands. If you already have these from the US parks they will work. Or you can buy them in and around the Super Nintendo Area.

15. Tips For Mario Kart

Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge is an interactive game in which you try to score as many points as possible. There is an explanation in English when you get on the ride, but there’s too many things going on. If you’re a competitive type there is a handy video on the website that you might want to watch in advance.

Waiting Times and Reducing Queues

USJ is the busiest theme park in Japan. Even on quiet days, there are a lot of people in the park. Here’s what you should know…

16. Queues Can Be Long

I’m writing this before 10 a.m. Japanese time on a Friday in July (so a busy period), and the wait time on Yoshi’s Adventure (not the most exciting of rides) is already 90 minutes, Mario Kart is 2 hours and 15 minutes, and the new Demon Slayer overlay is 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Expect to spend some of your day queuing, but, there are some ways to make that experience faster.

17. The Rides with the Longest Queues Are

Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, Yoshi’s Adventure, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Flight of the Hippogriff, and the XR Ride with overlay.

The Flying Dinosaur, Minion Mayhem, Jurrasic Park, Hollywood Dream are the next busiest.

If you don’t have an Express Pass, head to one of these first.

rakuten travel universal studios japan

18. Express Passes Can Save Heaps of Time

They aren’t cheap, and you don’t necessarily need one if rides aren’t your thing, you have a multiday pass, are going at a quiet time, or, you don’t mind queuing and won’t think your day is ruined if you don’t ride everything.

But if you’re going to USJ for the rides, especially if you want to ride everything in one day, buying an Express Pass – even the slightly cheaper Express Pass 4 will save you time.

With my Express Pass, I don’t think I queued for more than 20 minutes for a ride – if I had, let’s say, the Express Pass 4 Variety – which includes Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, Flight of the Hippogriff, Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem and Jaws, that’s about 1 hr 20 minutes of queuing.

Right now, those rides have queues of 355 minutes – that’s almost 7 hours – so, you’d free up more than 5 hours even with an Express Pass 4. Admittedly, it is a busy time so, this might not be as bad if you go say, second week in May, which is normally quiet.

19. Understanding Express Pass Time Slots

When you book your Express Pass, you can choose timeslots for your rides and to enter Super Nintendo World. These are set at either one-hour or 30-minute intervals (land entry is an hour, rides are 30 minutes). That’s the time you must enter the queue—not how long you have in total. I’ve seen people get confused with that.

Also, if your time is, say, 2.30-3.00, so long as you go through the queue entry and get your pass scanned by 2.59, you’re all good.

Once you are in Super Nintendo World, you can stay as long as you like, but you can’t return once you leave unless you have another timed entry pass.

rakuten travel universal studios japan

20. Pick the Right Express Pass for You

The Express Passes can be confusing – there are eight different types. Here’s the quick version.

The Express Pass 7 covers seven of the most popular rides. If you are going to USJ for the rides, this is the one to buy. They also sell out the quickest so, be ready to buy them as soon as you can .

The Express Pass 4 covers four of the popular rides. There are seven different versions of this (with annoyingly similar names), each covering different rides. You must think about which rides you most want to do and find the one that suits you best. Here’s a simple table that shows what covers what.

I’ve had to condense some of the pass names to make them fit. If you’re confused they are Express Pass 7, Fun Variety, Variety and Fun, Backdrop, Adventure and Jaws, XR Ride and Selection, Fun and Thrills and Variety and Thrills. Told you the names were annoyingly similar!

If you still need a little extra help in choosing, you’ll find some suggestions for different types of park guest in this post on whether you need an Express Pass .

Remember, USJ does change up ride overlays, so some of the names for the XR or 4D rides might differ, depending on when I last updated things (I do try and keep them current, but there’s only one me!) but the principal as to which pass is best is the same.

20. Entering the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

When this first opened, it was also subject to a timed entry ticket system like Super Nintendo World, and if you buy an Express Pass, you’ll see that you still get given time to go into the land. Don’t worry about it. Harry Potter is now open all the time.

I think they keep the time on the passes in case they ever do have days where the park is very, very full, but, generally, you don’t need to stress about getting to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at a set time. Just make sure you’re there for your ride times.

rakuten travel universal studios japan

21. Don’t Forget About Single Rider

The following rides at USJ have a single-rider queue.

Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem, Elmo’s GoGo Skateboard, Hollywood Dream, The Flying Dinosaur, Jurassic Park and Jaws.

With this, you join a separate line for general admission and fill any spare seats on the ride. It can be a quicker way to get on some rides, especially on quieter days. On busy days, the single-rider queue for something like The Flying Dinosaur can still be over an hour long.

Also, remember that while you can queue with your group, they will separate you on the ride itself – make sure that if you’re queuing with children, there are no rules about them being accompanied by an adult on the ride, or they might not be allowed on solo.

Also, note that single-rider queues aren’t always available. It can be a good alternative to buying an Express Pass, especially if you are actually traveling solo, but it is a gamble for the two reasons above.

22. If You’re Traveling with Small Children

There are two time-saving measures you need to know about.

This lets one person ride the ride while the other waits with anyone too small to ride. You can then swap childcare, and the other adult can ride without having to queue again.

Rides with Child Swap include Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, Yoshi’s Adventure, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Yoshi’s Adventure, Harry Potter and The Forbidden Journey, Flight of the Hippogriff, Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem – and many more. Find a full list here.

To use it, tell the cast member at the ride entrance that you want to use Child Swap and they’ll take you the right area to wait.

In this, you can use special terminals outside certain rides in the children’s ride area Universal Wonderland to book a set time to return to the ride with a shorter queue. This is a free service. You can only get a second Yoyakunori pass once the time for your next one has started.

The rides included are The Flying Snoopy, Elmo’s GoGo Skateboard, Moppy’s Balloon Trip, and Elmo’s Bubble Bubble.

Things to Know About Rides

It’s a theme park after all, so, here’s what to know about the rides…

23. The Commentary is in Japanese.

It doesn’t spoil things on a lot of rides, but I feel you miss out a little bit on the overlay rides, especially if you don’t know the anime to start with. I actually find that not knowing who the characters are in the films is a bit more frustrating than not understanding the story.

24. There are Lots of Thrill Rides

For some people, that’s the whole point of going, but if you don’t like thrill rides, USJ might not be your happy place. The most thrilling rides are…

Hollywood Dream – a rollercoaster. Hollywood Dream – Backdrop, the same ride but backwards. There’s a lot more screaming this way! The Flying Dinosaur (also known as my nope ride), Jurassic Park, and the themed XR Ride which runs on the old Space Fantasy rollercoaster track.

rakuten travel universal studios japan

25. What is an XR/Overlay Ride?

I keep mentioning these, so it’s time to explain them. Many of the rides at USJ use some kind of virtual reality effect as part of the ride, with you wearing a headset or glasses to immerse you in the game.

As well as making rollercoasters more intense, this also means that they can actually change up rides quite regularly by simply putting a new film overlay onto an existing ride.

When this happens, that ride is extremely popular, especially as the themes are often related to very popular anime or manga franchises – right now, it’s a Demon Slayer themed – which also ensures the ride is busy. The XR rides are normally the longest queue in the park, especially in the first few weeks.

26. Watch Out if You Get Motion Sickness

The other thing you need to know about VR rides is that they can mess a bit with your perception – more so than a simple rollercoaster. So, if you get severe motion sickness, you may want to be careful at USJ. If you get sick on Star Tours at Disney, you might feel a bit queasy here too.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is said to be the worst for this, but watch out for Minion Mayhem, Mario Kart, the XR ride overlay, and whatever is on in the 4D cinema.

If you do find yourself getting queasy, the top tip is to close your eyes—that removes some of the sensory mismatches and can stop the symptoms.

27. Check The Closure Calendar

Sometimes, rides have to be closed for maintenance – and if you have something on your must-ride list, it’s good to make sure it’s open when you turn up – especially if it’s why you want to buy an Express Pass. While they will change these if a ride is down for a long time, like Jurassic Park, a ride might still be included if it’s just out for a week and they won’t offer a refund.

Here are the current closures listed for 2024 – but you can find the full list here in case anything changes.

Jurassic Park – closed indefinitely

Freeze Ray Sliders – September 8, 2024 – September 14, 2024

Elmo’s Bubble Bubble – September 24, 2024 – September 28, 2024

When you go through the list, you’ll see a lot of other rides listed as closed. This can make it look like half the attractions are down. In fact, some of these are not so much closed as repurposed, so, for example, Space Fantasy’s track is now used for the XR ride.

Model of a giant shark hangs outside the JAWS ride at Universal Studios Japan

28. Some Rides are the Same as the US Parks

The Jaws ride at USJ is the same as the old one in Florida (as far as I remember), but as this has been retired, you might still want to ride it for old-time’s sake.

Jurrasic Park was the same, but as I said above, it’s currently closed for a makeover, so we shall see how that turns out.

I haven’t been to the US parks for a while, so I asked in my Facebook group which other rides were the same. People said that the Minions ride is similar, although in a different ride vehicle. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Flight of the Hippogriff are the same, and apparently, Mario Kart is the same as in Hollywood.

Accessibility

This section is a bit tricky to write conclusively as USJ doesn’t have official guidance on some of this for international guests, but I’ll do my best.

29. Get Your Paperwork Together

USJ does have a system where people who can’t wait in a long queue can get what’s known as a Guest Support Pass. These give you a set time to return to the ride, so you don’t have to stand for a long time in the queue. They state it is not a priority queue, and you can’t go on other rides while waiting.

However, the criteria for eligibility as a foreign guest is unclear. They state that you need a Disability Passbook, which is a thing in Japan but not in many other countries. This means there’s no official rule for using this service in USJ as an international guest.

Therefore, the best advice is to bring the most official documentation you can. Anything Government-issued is best, a doctor’s letter is a good idea, and I hope it works.

rakuten travel universal studios japan

USJ also offers discounted tickets for those who use disabled access. But, because the rules are so vague, I don’t suggest buying these tickets unless you are certain you have appropriate paperwork. You might get turned away or have to buy a new ticket.

30. How to Apply for a Guest Support Pass

You can’t do this in advance; it’s done in the park on the day of your visit. They can be issued by crew members at attractions or via Guest Services, but I would suggest trying Guest Services (the one inside the park) in this instance as there’s more likely to be someone there who speaks good English in case you need to explain your documentation.

Up to five other people can accompany the person using the Guest Support Pass. All of them must be present when the pass is first issued.

31. Using the Guest Support Pass

The pass is effectively a little booklet – that’s it in the photo above. Once it’s been issued, you present it at the entrance of each ride on which you want to use it, and you’ll then be given a time to enter that ride. This will be written on the booklet. This will correspond to the current wait time at the attraction – so, if the queue is 90 minutes, you’ll be told to return in 90 minutes. All members of your party must be with you.

The pass states that you cannot go on other rides while waiting for your time on this one. You can go into shops, grab food, watch shows and parades, use Power Bands, or just sit and watch the world go by.

Don’t ask me why, but it cannot be used on attractions in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

You can also ask for a Guest Support sticker. This will alert staff that you might like some extra support during your day.

Cars travel around the track of the Yoshi's Adventure ride in Super Nintendo World, USJ. They are shaped like Yoshi - a cute dinosaur/dragon creature

32. Wheelchair Accessible Rides

There are different rules for each ride with regards to wheelchair access.

It is possible to ride Jaws and Yoshi’s Adventure without getting out of your wheelchair, assuming it fits in the correct place in the ride vehicle.

For some other rides, including Harry Potter and The Forbidden Journey, Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem and Flight of the Hippogriff, you can transfer close to the ride in a wheelchair and transfer to the ride seat if that is possible for you.

Other rides, including Flying Dinosaur and some of the children’s rides, do not have close access and cannot be accessed in a wheelchair, so guests still must be able to walk unaided to the ride. Find requirements for individual rides here.

You’ll also find more advice for those using a wheelchair in the park in the Barrier Free Guide.

33. Slower Folks Watch Out on Harry Potter and The Forbidden Journey

I can handle queues, but I do have a small mobility issue that means my leg doesn’t work quite as quickly as I would like it to – and I could not get onto Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey when traveling solo.

You go from one moving walkway to another moving walkway, and then to a moving ride – and it was too many things for my brain and leg to catch up with in one go.

I’m going to try again next time when I have someone to hang onto as I think that would make the difference – but, when I had to leave the ride, they did tell me that there was a stationary queue I could join (but I was embarrassed and just wanted out of there). But, if you don’t move too fast, then maybe ask about this when you enter the ride so they can send you the right way.

I also found that USJ had fewer handles to pull yourself out of seats and things than Disney. Watching me get out of the Jurassic Park ride must have been hilarious. Again, if you’re traveling with a friend to give you a helping hand, this won’t be an issue, but solo travelers don’t wear a short dress or you might flash the whole queue!

34. Additional Meal Facilities

Some of the restaurants in USJ offer access to a microwave or preparation equipment like puree machines, for those with extra food preparation needs.  A list of facilities is available  here.

USJ and Plus Sized/Tall Folks

It’s normal for theme park rides to have height restrictions for smaller children, but, at USJ, where rides are built with the smaller Japanese physique in mind, adults might also have some issues on some rides.

35. If you’re Tall

There are two rides in USJ which have an upper height restriction. You must be under 195cm to ride Flight of the Hippogriff and under 198cm to ride The Flying Dinosaur.

On some of the other rides, taller folk might have to go in the front seats, which have a bit more leg room, in order for the safety bars to go down. The staff will move you if there’s an issue.

rakuten travel universal studios japan

36. Plus-Sized Advice

Unfortunately, word in my Facebook group is that USJ is not as plus-sized friendly as Tokyo Disney Resort and more Pooh-sized people have found that they can’t ride some of the rides.

The main issue seems to be rides with safety bars that come down over the stomach area, as the height at which this must descend before it locks isn’t exactly generous. If you carry your weight around your middle or bottom, you might have more problems than someone who is bustier.

If you look at the ride details on the USJ website, you’ll see that some of them have a seat width check listed – these are the ones where there might be a concern. They include Mario Kart Koopa’s Challenge, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Hollywood Dream, Backdrop and Yoshi’s Adventure.

Often, if the staff think you might have an issue, they will take you to a test seat away from the crowds, or you can ask to use the test seat. One time this doesn’t happen is at Flight of the Hippogriff, where there is no test seat, and they have to stop the ride to have you try a seat. If you’re a little more Pooh-sized and will get embarrassed or upset if you’re turned away in public, maybe steer clear of Hippogriff.

Eating and Drinking

This is one of the fun things about visiting USJ for me, here’s what you need to know…

37. USJ Does Cute Food Too

If you want to eat a burger shaped like a Minion or a Jaws-shaped cake, then USJ has your back. I’m going to do a bigger post on this when I get back from my next trip as I was solo last time and didn’t eat everything I wanted to, but this time I have a friend to help me eat my way through the park!

In the meantime, my ‘must eat’ list includes the shark-themed Swiss Roll in Amity Landing, Minion Ice Cream Sandwiches from Delicious Me and the Minion Burger Meal at Happiness Cafe, house-themed Churritos at the Neep Cart in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the Teriyaki Chicken Superstar rice at Kinopio’s Cafe (although everything here is cute).

rakuten travel universal studios japan

You’ll also find seasonal themed meals around the park – for example, until October 2024, you’ll be able to buy One Piece-themed dishes at Discovery Restaurant and Fossil Fuels (both near Jurassic Park). These seasonal foods normally reflect special events in the parks, so watch for them.

38. Some Restaurants Have Priority Booking

Most USJ restaurants are walk-in, but a small number allows you to request priority seating, reducing your wait when you arrive. These are Parkside Grill, Finnegans Bar and Grill, and Azzura di Capri.

Requests open one month before the date of your visit and can be made on the app or website.

The most popular restaurant in the park is Kinopio’s Cafe. This doesn’t take reservations. If you want to eat here, go here first when you get into Super Nintendo World and see if you can get a return time that fits your plans. Note – you cannot leave Super Nintendo World and come back to dine at Kinopio’s.

39. There are Vegetarian and Vegan Offerings

Plant-based options are becoming more common in the parks. Plant-based is defined as not containing meat, seafood, eggs, dairy or honey. They are marked on the menu with a green plant-based symbol.

Admittedly, you won’t be able to walk into a park restaurant and choose from an array of options, as each restaurant has just one or two individual plant-based options.  Check here to find a full list of choices and where they are served .

VeganTDR on Instagram has also started adding USJ options to her grid and that’s a good place to check for any new options.

rakuten travel universal studios japan

40. There’s Plenty for Picky Eaters

If you’re traveling with kids (or adults) who may not be too adventurous with their dining choices, the good news is that USJ offers a lot more familiar fast-food-style choices than Disney Parks.

Good restaurants to consider include Mel’s Diner, Happiness Cafe, and Amity Landing, which all serve familiar favorites like burgers, pizza, and chicken nuggets.

41. Eating With Allergies

Low-allergen meals are on offer in some restaurants including Kinopio’s Cafe in Super Nintendo World and The Three Broomsticks in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. These are free from the seven main major allergens in Japan –   eggs, milk, wheat, shrimp, crab, buckwheat and peanuts.

Find specific details on the meals and the full list of restaurants in which they are served here.

You can also search on that page for other dishes without specific allergens.

42. Staying Hydrated

There are water fountains around the park where you can fill up water bottles. The park rules state that you can bring your own fillable bottles into the park, but watch out. I have had people in my Facebook group say they couldn’t take theirs in.

This might have been down to its size or what it was made from, but they weren’t sure. Someone else in the group suggested just using a clear plastic bottle under 500ml on this day just in case.

43. There is Alcohol

This is not the case in all restaurants, but you can find boozy options in Finnegan’s Bar and Grille, the Hogs Head, and Parkside Grill.

Parades and Shows

USJ has a mix of regular parades and shows, as well as special events throughout the year. Here’s what you need to know…

44. There’s a Daily Parade

The No Limit Parade takes place in the afternoon – usually at 2pm. It features characters like Mario, Pikachu, Hello Kitty, Minions and more.

In summer, the parade adds a splash element with water pistols, hosepipes, and buckets of water—you will get wet, but chances are you’ll appreciate it in the heat.

Unlike at Disney, where you are asked to sit down for the parade, people stand to watch No Limit, and many will dance along with the performers.

rakuten travel universal studios japan

45. Don’t Forget About the Waterworld Show

Even though the arena is huge, this is kind of tucked away off by Super Nintendo World and easy to forget about.

It happens three times a day and is a great place to rest if your feet are starting to complain!

46. There Isn’t a Night Parade or Fireworks

You’ll find evening performances in different lands, or you might find a parade/Dance Party with a special theme (like for Halloween), but on a day-to-day basis, there isn’t a big ticket closing event each night at USJ.

47. Halloween Horror Nights is Different

This is USJ’s annual spooky event, which runs from early September to early November. Unlike the US event, you don’t need a special ticket to attend; it’s included in your Studio Pass.

Head to our more detailed Halloween Horror Nights guide to learn more about this, including attractions, costume rules, Express Pass advice, and how to avoid it if you’re traveling with small children who might be scared.

What to Buy

There are shops all over USJ so, what can you bring home as souvenirs…

48. They Do Popcorn Buckets

You’ll find a selection of popcorn carts and themed popcorn buckets around the park. USJ also makes a number of cute themed drinking cups.

To find an up-to-date list of what’s available when you’re there, head to the on-the-go food section , which shows pictures of the latest range and where to buy them. I now desperately want a minions one.

rakuten travel universal studios japan

49. Try a Headband

Universal Studios Japan doesn’t have mouse ears, but it does have character hats and headbands that you can wear to join in the fun – and you’ll see plenty of people in them. They also offer merchandise around the pop-up ride themes or temporary shows or attractions so keep an eye out for that.

And I think that’s it – the 49 tips you need to be fully prepared for your first trip to Universal Studios Japan. If I have forgotten anything, though, please head over to Facebook, where you’ll find the  Disney and USJ group  to help you out.

Tips and Tricks for Buying Tickets to Universal Studios Japan

With rollercoasters, immersive 4D experiences, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, plenty of exciting rides, and the new Super Nintendo World , it’s no wonder that a visit to Universal Studios Japan (USJ) has become one of the top things to do in the Kansai region . This steady popularity, however, means few discounts are available, but decisions on where and when to buy tickets, as well as what kind of access you want, can help you save a few yen towards that extra cauldron cake. Read on for a guide to Universal Studios Japan tickets: how much they cost, where to buy them, and—most importantly—getting whatever discounts are available.

Also read: Our recommended USJ itinerary for first-time visitors .

Note: All prices are listed inclusive of tax, but prices do fluctuate and may rise annually.

Universal Studios Japan tickets: Prices & types

On the surface, USJ’s tickets are pretty simple: you have a 1-Day Studio Pass , a 1.5-Day Studio Pass, a 2-Day Studio Pass and the option of an Express Pass add-on. The Express Pass lets you skip queues on certain rides and pack more into your day, but it does come at a rather hefty price.

So how much do tickets to Universal Studios Japan cost?

USJ ticket prices: Studio Passes

  • 1-Day Pass – Adult: ¥ 8,600 to ¥ 10,400 — purchase online
  • 1-Day Pass – Child: ¥ 5,400 to ¥ 6,200
  • 1.5 Day Pass – Adult: ¥ 13,100
  • 1.5-Day Pass – Child: ¥ 8,600
  • 2-Day Pass – Adult: ¥ 16,200
  • 2-Day Pass – Child: ¥ 10,500

Note: Universal Studios Japan entry ticket prices may vary depending on the day and season.

Universal Studios Japan Express Pass

A USJ Express Pass, also known as a “fast pass”, comes in several forms, including these popular options (the price includes the day pass):

  • USJ Express Pass for 7 attractions – from ¥ 17,800
  • USJ Express Pass for 4 attractions – from ¥ 14,800

These passes have varying options about the rides included — you can’t just pick and choose.

universal studios japan - osaka - the entrance with iconic globe

How much does it cost to go to Harry Potter’s Wizarding World in Japan?

Entry to Harry Potter’s Wizarding World is included in your Studio Pass. Like Super Nintendo World and the other attractions at Universal Studios Japan, you don’t need to pay extra.

Note that you can get a free timed entry ticket to shorten wait times for certain attractions and rides. If you really want to spend extra cash, you can pay for photos after the experience.

On-the-day tickets for Universal Studios Japan

If you prefer to keep things casual and rock up on the day to purchase tickets, head straight for the USJ park ticket gates. The gates are open an hour before the park’s official opening time, and close two hours before the park itself.

Tickets bought at the gate are a little more simplified, but buying online gives you more options, including the 1.5 Day Pass.

Note that buying your USJ tickets at the gate, on the day, carries risks—including lengthy queues, cutting into your day, and tickets selling out during popular seasons (like Halloween and school holidays). We strongly recommend buying your tickets online ahead of your visit. Plus, ticket prices are the same online or at the gate, so it’s a no-brainer to secure your tickets ahead of time. See the next section for info on authorized online resellers.

Planning ahead: How to buy USJ tickets online

Booking universal studios japan tickets in english.

You can buy your USJ Studio Pass quickly and easily online through KKday , an authorized reseller.

This “authorized reseller” part is important: If you rock up with tickets purchased through any non-authorized resellers, you won’t be able to enter the park unless you buy a new ticket on the day.

Booking USJ Osaka tickets in Japanese

Another option is to book directly on the Japanese USJ website . This can be manageable if you use Google Translate (which works well on Chrome), and offers some unique discounts. The regular 1-Day or 2-Day Pass costs the same as the at-the-gate tickets.

If you try to buy tickets directly through the English version of the USJ website, you will be redirected to an authorized reseller page.

Special birthday discounts at USJ Osaka

There are some discounts to be had on the Japanese site if it is your birthday. If you’re visiting during your birthday month or the following month, you can save ¥ 500 on a 1-Day Pass and ¥ 1,000 on your 2-Day Pass. You do have to be a member for this deal, but you can sign up for free , so it’s an easy save.

Klook ) is a great way to go. USJ is pretty strict about unauthorized resellers and invalidate any QR codes that are found to have been resold, so steer clear of unapproved sites. While online prices add a few extra yen compared to booth tickets, there are some perks that can make it worth your while—aside from not having to queue early in the morning! The option to purchase an e-ticket means you have more flexibility on when you go, as they are generally valid for around a month, so if plans change you still have guaranteed entry. There are also chances to [affiliate id="rakuten" text="buy USJ tickets which are not otherwise available" link=""] (like the coveted NYE countdown tickets), and Fast Passes which often sell out very, well, fast at the gate. One of the most practical online ticket options is the [affiliate id="rakuten" text="1.5-Day Pass" link=""] that allows entry from 3pm on day one (perfect for the evening displays), then full-day access on day two. This is great if you’re arriving mid-afternoon in Osaka and think a day might not be quite enough time, or if you have to leave before the evening shows on your second day. Note: These tickets must be exchanged at Kansai Airport or at JR Namba Station, so be sure you can visit one of those in advance.-->

Travel combination tickets for USJ

It can work out cheaper to buy a package deal for your entry pass, transport and accommodation, especially if you are coming from a major area like Tokyo.

Hankyu Tourist Pass Combo

Jr west kansai pass bundle, usj ticket + highway bus combo packages.

If you’re traveling from Tokyo, there are various USJ bus packages available from Willer Express, which include your USJ entry ticket, transport and—optionally—hotel accommodation if you don’t fancy snoozing in the bus.

Alternatively, you can make your own way to Osaka—you can get highway bus tickets from Tokyo to Osaka for as low as ¥ 2,000 one way.

Highway Bus Seats

coach transfer ticket for just [price amount=1100] one way or [price amount=2000] return from Osaka's city center straight to the park. Pick-up locations include Dotombori and Shinsaibashi, departing at 7:30am and 7:40am respectively. The return bus departs at 8pm from USJ, giving you a pretty full day—although you can take a train home if you'd rather stay till closing time. There's also a special combo ticket package for thrillseekers planning to visit both USJ and the Harukas 300 observatory .-->

Universal Studios Japan

  • January 5, 2022

Leaving the Japanese Alps and Toyama behind, we jumped on a train and went to Osaka. We did a little sightseeing of the city, about which I will elaborate later, but our main goal was Universal Studios Japan.

Universal Studios Japan, or USJ in short, is currently the 4th most attended theme park in the World, with a staggering 14.5 million visitors a year. Some of the attractions are unique to Japan and aren’t available in other Univeral Studios parks, including a new area of Super Nintendo World that opened in 2021.

Universal Studios Japan

Studio Pass

Studio Pass is a regular ticket that allows you to enter the park and is available for 1 day, 1.5 days or 2 days. The official website is only in Japanese, so you probably need to use authorized resellers instead, like Voyagin (now Rakuten Travel Experiences) or Klook . We used Klook to book regular day tickets and Voyagin for Express passes and didn’t have any issues with either of them.

Tickets can also be purchased at the ticket booths at the entrance to the park; however, the queues are crazy, so why waste time waiting in a ticket line.

It is a good idea to buy the tickets in advance as on busy days they might sell out pretty fast. And who wants to ruin their plan just because the tickets sold out? USJ tickets are non-refundable no matter where you buy them, so plan your travel dates carefully! Also, mark that the ticket price depends on the crowd level, so it might vary depending on when you would like to visit.

We decided to spend in Universal Studios Japan two days, to have enough time to enjoy all the rides and shows. That was a fantastic idea, as my boyfriend caught a nasty cold that made him bury himself in a bed and miss one day of fun. On a side note, Japanese drugs are great; they fixed him in a day 😛

Express Pass

Having experienced Tokyo Disneyland and the unimaginably long queues to each attraction, we opted for Express Pass. Even though it was expensive, it was worth not waiting for hours in line, which are around 3 hours long for the most exciting attractions. Express Pass pricing varies depending on expected crowd levels, so plan well. Remember also to buy Express Pass in advance as there is a limited number of them and they sell fast.

It is worth noting that there are different Express Passes, and they only allow you to use a specific attraction once. If you want to ride multiple times, you need to queue in a regular line after the Express Pass is used. Some Express Passes also include a timed entry ticket to  The Wizarding World of Harry Potter  to guarantee your entry on the day. Without it, you might be out of luck during the busy season.

There are different Express Passes, and the websites selling them describe what attractions they are valid for. In short, though, there are three kinds: Express Pass 3,4,7, where the number depicts how many attractions they are valid on.

Is it worth spending money on Express Pass?

I would say yes, especially if you are in a park for a day and would like to try all the attractions. We initially didn’t plan on buying a pass as we had two days there, but Disneyland showed us what queues in Japan mean, and we didn’t want to repeat our miserable experience of waiting for each attraction for 3 hours. Worth noting is that we went in early November, in the middle of the week, where there were no crowds (ekhm, or so they said ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). I cannot imagine how bad it is when the park is crowded 😛

Is it possible to do it without a pass?

Sure, but you need to plan well and prepare that you might not get to use all the attractions, especially if you will be there only for a day.

Continue reading for tips on how to make the most out of your stay.

Royal Studio Pass

Royal Studio Pass is a special ticket granting admission plus unlimited use of an Express access lane to all attractions. It also allows you to enter The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and VIP entry to WaterWorld and Universal Monsters Live Rock And Roll Show.

There are only 200 of them per day. However, the price of Royal Pass was so insane; we didn’t even consider getting it. An entry for a day with this pass was double the price of a 2-day ticket.

Early Entry Pass

If you have this pass, you will be able to enter the park 15 minutes before it opens. It also allows you to enter The Wizarding World of Harry Potter without a Timed-Entry or Express Pass ticket since there is no staff at the entrances yet.

When to visit

It is essential to plan your visit strategically. Avoid visiting the park during the weekend; you will spend most of the time waiting in line, and that’s not fun. Friday, Saturdays, Sundays, and any holidays are insanely crowded. Monday is a popular time for school trips. The best days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday .

Check this crowd calendar to see the forecast of when the park is busy. It is in Japanese, but you can use Google Translate to translate it to English. As a general rule of thumb, avoid orange and darker-colored days.

The best time to visit season-wise is Halloween (October) and Christmas (November and December), as there are some cool seasonal events and the weather is quite ok. Beware, though, of the end of the year as it is the holiday season, and the park is crowded. We were there during Christmas, where one of the highlights was the projection show on Hogwarts. It was a jaw-dropping experience.

  • Check opening times for the park on the official website . Even during the week; the schedule may vary.
  • Start early, and get in the line to the park at least an hour before opening time. The park is sometimes opening ahead of time, and if you come too late, you will stand at the very end of a large crowd. You probably will not be the first one, as some of the people come a couple of hours ahead of opening time, but at least you will not be at the dead end.

Crowds

  • Buy your tickets in advance and don’t wait in line to buy them at the entrance.
  • If you can, get Express Pass.
  • Hit the seasonal attractions first,  followed by the popular Express Pass attractions. After that, explore the park and queue for the non-Express pass attractions.
  • Use Single Rider lines to bypass excruciatingly long waits for the most popular attractions. Japanese are pretty reluctant to use them, so you probably will wait only 15 minutes compared to 3 hours or more. There is a little longer line on thrill rides, but it is still shorter than a regular one. And I am pretty sure you can handle being separated from your family and friends for 3 minutes 🙂
  • If you came with a kid, and for some reason, the kid cannot get on a ride, there is a superb option for you and your partner called Child Switch. That means you can take a ride by yourself while the partner takes care of the kid, and then you switch places without needing to queue again.

Attractions

For thrill-seekers, the flying dinosaur .

An incredible upside-down rollercoaster ride with loops and barrel rolls located in the Jurassic Park area. I’ve tried it multiple times, and I had a blast. It was my favorite attraction! Remember, though, the queue for this one is insane, so use Express Pass and Single Rider line.

The Flying Dinosaur

Hollywood Dream and Hollywood Dream Backdrop

Two rollercoasters, where one goes forward and the other backward. It is gentler than The Flying Dinosaur as it has no loops but still has plenty of dips and turns. A fun feature is choosing from one of five songs as your personal soundtrack. I’ve tried both, but I think the backward version was better. Also, remember there are two separate queues for them.

Flight of the Hippogriff

A very short rollercoaster that barely made it to the thrill-seeker category 🙂

For Movie Fans

The amazing adventures of spiderman .

4D ride involving 3D glasses and some water and fire elements. It was ok, but I am not a massive fan of 3D rides.

Harry Potter & The Forbidden Journey

Another one of the 3D rides, this time without the need for glasses. It is a super popular ride with quite long queues; however, I wasn’t a big fan. Maybe the combination of 3D effects, spinning, and sweet Butterbeer wasn’t the greatest combination, and I ended puking afterward 😛

One impressive thing was the queue area; you had to go through the inside of Hogwarts castle, which looked like in the movie!

Hogwarts castle

Minions Mayhem

Motion simulator ride where you “transform” into a minion. I still don’t understand why this ride is so popular 😀

Jurassic World

A super cool gentle boat ride among dinosaurs with a huge and fun drop at the end where you may get wet.

Jurassic World

Another boat ride through tranquil water … until the shark starts attacking. It was super fun, and we took it a couple of times.

Shows & Entertainment

It is an epic show with jaw-dropping battle sequences featuring incredible stunts and explosions. We checked it out totally by accident, and it ended up as one of our most favorite experiences in the park.

Beware, though, not to sit in the front row unless you like being wet.

WaterWorld

Terminator 2:3-D

A cool show featuring Terminator movie. It was fun, though everything was in Japanese.

Terminator 2:3-D

Hogwarts Magical Night “Winter Magic”

Don’t miss mesmerizing projections on Hogwarts castle if you are in the park during November or December. It is one of the most popular season events, so expect some crowds. Luckily, the show runs a couple of times, so you can watch it again if you missed it.

Hogwarts Magical Night

Universal’s Spectacle Night Parade

I’ve read it is an event not to be missed; however, when we were there, it was canceled due to the weather on both days, and we didn’t have a chance to see it.

Read more about the parade here.

Local events

We encountered a dinosaur parade when we were strolling through the Jurassic Park area. It was so cool! If I were a kid, I would be terrified of walking dinos, but I guess kids are more resilient nowadays 😛 I loved it so much I took part in it on both days 🙂

Jurassic Park

Universal Studios Japan currently has  ten sections : Hollywood, New York, San Francisco, Jurassic Park, Waterworld, Amity Village, Universal Wonderland, Minion Park, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and Super Nintendo World that opened in 2021.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Visit the World of Harry Potter and walk around Hogsmeade, visiting shops on the way and buying Harry Potter’s merchandise.

Hogsmeade

Maybe you would like to try getting a wand? Then pop by Ollivanders shop and get chosen by one. Even if they choose a kid for a show and not a 30-year-old kid like you, the show is still a lot of fun! And when you get a wand, go and explore the area! There are eight magic spots where you can train your wizardry skills and move and levitate things.

Ollivanders shop

Or perhaps you want to try Butterbeer – a non-alcoholic drink we all know from Harry Potter? Close to the entrance of Hogsmead, there is a barrel-shaped kiosk selling it. If the queue is too long, check out whether the line on the other side of the booth is smaller. Sometimes people don’t notice the other queue. There is also a second kiosk at the other end of Hogsmead, close to The Flight of the Hippogriff ride entrance. Lines can sometimes be shorter there. You can also opt to have a meal at The Three Broomsticks and get the beer to accompany your dinner. Many people love it; it tastes like a very sweet soda with a cheesy mousse on top. But let’s say it like this; it was not my cup of beer 😀

Butterbeer

Interested in what is in Hogwarts castle? You can either queue up for a ride or take a tour through the castle grounds.

Keep in mind that you may need a timed entry ticket to enter the area on certain days – weekends and holidays. The ticket is free of charge, but you need to rush to the machine to get it on a busy day. Once you get into the park, head to the timed ticket area, scan your park ticket and select the time to enter—more details where to find the machine here .

Once you get into the area, you can stay as long as you want, but you cannot reenter once you leave. Additionally, if you use the Express Pass that has entrance to the area included, you’ll be assigned a time on your Express Pass. On less busy days, weekdays, you usually don’t need a timed entry. We could just get in and out as much as we wanted.

Super Nintendo World

Super Nintendo World is a totally new area that opened in 2021 and is primarily dedicated to the most legendary franchise in Nintendo’s catalog:  Super Mario Bros.

It is located next to the Harry Potter area, and to enter it you need to go through a giant green warp pipe. You might want to pick up a Power-Up Band when you enter the area. It costs 3,200 yen, allowing you to do certain activities in the area, gamifying the experience. You don’t strictly need it, but who doesn’t want to collect virtual coins 🙂

It is insanely popular, similarly to Harry Potter World, so you need Timed Entry Tickets to enter it. You can get them from a park ticket booth or the Express Pass that covers entry to the area. Once all the Area Timed Entry Tickets have been taken, the booth will begin issuing Standby Entry Tickets ( I am not clear on the difference, though).

There is a third option: booking it through the official app; however, when we tried in 2019 to download it, we failed as our Google store was not localized in Japan.

Read more about the tickets here .

When we visited the park in 2019, the area was still under construction, so I have no idea how fun it is. But based on the rest of the park, it should be pretty cool.

Where to stay

Depending on your needs, you can either stay next to the park in one of the multiple hotels in the area or stay in Osaka city center and take a train in the morning.

We opted for a hotel next to the park as we were too lazy to wake up super early to travel to the park. However, it is also super easy to get to the park by train, but it is packed in the morning and evening when guests come in and then travel back home.

Visiting Universal Studios Japan in Osaka

June 7, 2024

Universal Studios Japan, Osaka

Universal Studios Japan was the first Universal theme park built in Asia , and it remains one of the best. In fact, its popularity in Japan is second only to the Tokyo Disney Resort .

You can enjoy many rides, from child-friendly attractions to thrilling roller coasters based on hit movie franchises. Your children can have their picture taken with all their favorite characters, and there are a number of theatrical spectacles to enjoy.

How to get to Universal Studios Japan in Osaka

Universal Studios Japan is located 7 kilometers from Osaka . You can easily reach Universal Studios by train using your Japan Rail Pass .

While in Osaka , from Osaka Station City , take the Osaka loop line , also known as Osaka Kanjo line, to Nishikujo Station.

Then take the Sakurajima line (also known as Yumesaki line) to Universal-City Station . Once in there, Universal Studios Japan is under 5 minutes-walk.

The whole trip takes about 13 minutes. Several trains run per hour, departing about every 15 minutes.

The trip is fully covered by the JR Pass . If you don’t have one, the train tickets will be about 180 yen.

If traveling from Tokyo to Universal Studios , you can first take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka Station . Once there, you can take the JR Tokaido-Sanyo line (not Shinkansen line) to Osaka Station City.

Ticket types and prices

Universal Studios Japan offers the following ticket options:

  • 1-day adult pass, 8,600 yen
  • 2-day adult pass, 16,300 yen
  • 1-day child pass, 5,600 yen
  • 2-day child pass,  10,600 yen
  • 1-day senior pass, 7,700 yen
  • 1.5-day pass for adult, 13,100 yen
  • 1.5-day pass for child, 6,600 yen

(Prices correct as of March 2023)

Children’s tickets are available up to 12 years of age, and senior offerings begin at 65 years of age. Tickets can be purchased in advance through a number of websites, saving you the time of standing in line after you arrive at the park.

Universal Express Pass

Express Passes allow you to skip the line at some of your favorite rides . A number of different passes are available, each serving a different set of 4 to 7 rides.

Prices vary by date, but express passes generally range from 6,800 to 18,800 yen for 4 rides , and 10,800 to 23,800 for 7 days.

These passes often sell out quickly at the ticket gate, but you can purchase them online in advance of your trip.

As the number of people who can enter the Super Nintendo World at the park is limited, we recommended you buy an Express Pass if you plan to visit this area and want to guarantee your entry.

VIP Wristband

The VIP wristband is another add-on that can save you time and frustration. The wristband allows you to enter the park ahead of other visitors , avoiding a wait in line.

It also offers admission to the Harukas 300 Building in Tennoji. The wristband costs about 38 USD.

Opening hours

Hours vary by season, but normally include the hours of 8.30 / 9:30 am to 7:00 / 9:00 pm . During weekends or public holidays , opening hours may be extended.

It is advisable to consult the official website for the most up-to-date information on opening hours based on the day.

The park is open 365 days a year .

A tour of Universal Studios Japan

Universal Studios Japan is divided into 10 themed zones . These include:

  • New York , where you can web sling with Spider-Man.
  • Minion Park , where you can cook up mischief with your favorite yellow minions.
  • San Francisco , where you can relive the movie Backdraft.
  • Jurassic Park , where you can tangle with ancient giants, including the Flying Dinosaur ride.
  • Waterworld , where you can enjoy an aquatic show based on the film.
  • Amity Village , home to the famous and frightening Jaws ride.
  • Universal Wonderland , a haven for the youngest children, with characters like Snoopy and Big Bird.
  • Hollywood , a shopping and dining area with additional roller coasters.

Two of the newest areas of the park are also among the most popular:

  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter , which brings locations from J.K Rowling’s magical world to life. You can tour Hogwarts Castle and the Black Lake, and enjoy a butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks in snowy Hogsmeade Village. You’ll also see iconic props from the franchise wherever you look, from the Hogwarts Express train to Ron’s flying car from The Chamber of Secrets.
  • Super Nintendo World, a colorful and interactive wonderland dedicated to the iconic characters and games from Nintendo’s popular gaming universe. You can visit iconic locations such as Bowser’s castle, take a ride on the ‘Yoshi’s Adventures’ attraction and, and meet Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Peach in person.

A Donkey Kong section is also expected to open in Super Nintendo World in the near future.

There’s also a new temporary event section from July 19, 2024 – January 5, 2025:

  • Demon Slayer — based on the popular anime, 2 rides are coming to Universal Japan, using advanced technology. According to sources, the Demon Slayer attractions are a trial to see how popular anime-based rides are at Universal parks. There is the possibility that the rides will become fixtures and will open the door to more new attractions.

Best Rides and attractions

Some of the most popular attractions at USJ include:

  • The Flying Dinosaur : Welcome to Jurassic Park, where a Pteranodon is waiting to pull you up into the sky. The sensation of flight is enhanced by the 90-degree rotation of the seats so that you are facing the ground below and the sky above.
  • Despicable Me Minion Mayhem : One of the park’s newest rides, immerse yourself in a 3D simulation of the Minion’s world.
  • The Hollywood Dream Roller Coaster : Choose one of five songs for your personal “soundtrack.” The Hollywood Dream Backdrop ride follows the same course, only backward.

  • The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man : Feel the heat and moisture of villainous weapons in this ride that combines a moving vehicle with 3D elements.
  • Jurassic Park the Ride : Tour the infamous park from the water, and watch out for the drop at the end!

Jurassic Park The Ride at Universal Studios Japan

  • Jaws : A leisurely boat ride becomes a fight for survival when a gigantic great white shark appears!
  • Lupin the Third Car Chase XR : Formerly known as Space Fantasy, this spinning roller coaster celebrates Japanese characters from Lupin the Third.
  • Sing on Tour : Experience the music and madness of the 2016 animated film in a charming stage attraction.
  • Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey : The Wizarding World’s main attraction, this ride takes place inside Hogwarts Castle. It takes you on a wild ride through a Quidditch match, the Chamber of Secrets, the Forbidden Forest, and more, all while avoiding villains like the Dementors and the Whomping Willow.

Harry Potter ride in Universal Studios Japan

  • Mario Kart : A thrilling ride that brings the beloved video game to life. This augmented reality attraction allows you to board a real-life Mario Kart and race through the Mushroom Kingdom while collecting items and throwing shells at competitors, just like in the game!
  • Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba XR Ride — Race to Swordsmith Village: A new XR ride, combining a roller coaster with cutting-edge VR technology. Experience the world of Demon Slayer and engage in battle!
  • Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc x Hollywood Dream – The Ride : An immersive experience — join the Demon Slayer Corps and embark on a whitewater adventure. Things get exciting as your raft takes a tumble down a waterfall…

Some of the USJ coasters are quite wild. So you may want to take advantage of a unique feature offered by ride staff – rubber bands to put over your shoes , so they don’t fall off!

Avoiding the crowds: The best time to go

Universal Studios Japan is a busy attraction all year round. In order to beat the crowds, arrive early, and take advantage of the Express Pass and VIP wristband.

When planning the order of your rides, consult the wait-time monitors. Use the single-rider lines for more popular rides – you may not be seated with other members of your party, but you’ll all get to ride sooner!

Additionally, try to plan your trip on weekdays rather than on the weekend, and avoid any holidays. Wednesdays and Thursdays tend to have the least crowds.

  • Which Universal Studios Japan Attractions To Visit Based on Your Kind of Adventure

Whether you’re a first-time or repeat traveler to Osaka , a visit to Universal Studios Japan is definitely a must. The amusement park, which opened in 2001, is one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions, housing 10 themed ‘worlds’ inspired by movies, games, and filming locations associated with Universal Studios.

Universal Studios Japan

Universal Studios Japan definitely has something for everyone. But with an array of attractions to explore, it may be hard to know where to go first. So, here’s a list of the best activities to add to your Universal Studios Japan must-do list based on your personality.

1. For the gaming fan: explore Super Nintendo World™

Universal Studios Japan - Super Nintendo World

As the newest area in Universal Studios Japan, Super Nintendo World™ is a must-visit for all game lovers. The area transports you to the Mushroom Kingdom of Super Mario with familiar elements and characters from this world-famous franchise.

With a Power-Up Band™ that you can purchase in carts and shops in Super Nintendo World, you can interact with various objects in the area and collect coins — making you feel like you’ve really jumped into the game. You can also experience what it feels like to be a Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge™ racer or just have a relaxing tour of the kingdom with Yoshi’s Adventure . Lastly, don’t forget to check out Kinopio’s Cafe™ for some treats and buy some souvenirs at the merchandise shop to complete your experience!

2. For the adrenaline junkie: go for a round at Jurassic Park - The Ride

Universal Studios Japan Jurrasic Park The Ride

Following the concept of its namesake film, Jurassic Park - The Ride takes you on an exciting boat ride along Jurassic Park. The relaxing trip takes a sharp turn when one of the park’s aggressive T-rexes escapes, leaving guests on a blood-pumping chase against the raging dinosaur. Aside from the realistic effects and animatronics guests will encounter during the ride, the boat also hits a thrilling 25.9-meter drop, marking the end of the ride and a successful escape from the dinosaur. Pro tip: There’s a big chance you’ll get splashed with a lot of water, so bring a raincoat or extra clothes!

If the rush of Jurassic Park - The Ride not enough to get your blood racing, hop aboard The Flying Dinosaur , where a Pteranodon takes you for an exhilarating ride through a steel-flying rollercoaster that goes through the entire Jurrasic World area in 360 degrees.

3. For the Potterhead: have a magical time at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™

Universal Studios Japan - Wizarding World Of Harry Potter

Pull out your wand, dress in your House colors, and unleash the Potterhead in you at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ .

Join Harry, Ron, and Hermione in Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey™ — an immersive ride that will take you all around  Hogwarts. You can also explore the magical stores in Hogsmeade™ and grab your own interactive wand at Ollivanders™ wand shop. These interactive wands can actually cast spells around the village, letting you experience what it feels like to be a witch or wizard. Before you leave, don’t forget to have your fill of (non-alcoholic) Butterbeer like a true Hogwarts student.

4. For the pop-culture super fan: catch your favorite characters at the No Limit! Parade

Universal Studios Japan - No Limit! Parade

Get ready with your cameras, special Bubble Wand, and character headbands to celebrate your love for pop culture characters in the No Limit! Parade . The parade features crowd-favorites like Super Mario, Pikachu and other Pokemon, the Minions, Hello Kitty, Snoopy, and more. Bright, colorful floats and exciting performances are the highlights of this parade, with the parade music inviting you to move to the beat.

5. For the kids and kids-at-heart: playful mayhem at Minion Park

Universal Studios Japan - Despicable Me! Minions

Kids and kids-at-heart will love this Universal Studios Japan attraction that’s inspired by the playful and lovable Minions. Win a stuffed toy featuring Despicable Me! characters like Agnes at arcade games like Space Killer or Banana Cabana , where you need to collapse coins or flip bananas. Unleash your inner mastermind by competing against Minions and their schemes in Despicable Me : Minion Mayhem and Freeze Ray Sliders . Don’t forget to take home delicious treats and cute memorabilia featuring these chaotically cute creatures from the merchandise shops and stalls like POP-A-NANA and Sweet Surrender .

Upcoming Limited Time Events You Can’t Miss

Aside from the familiar attractions seen in other Universal Studios, Universal Studios Japan features seasonal themed attractions unique to Japan. Previous time-limited attractions included famous works such as Spy x Family , Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba , Attack On Titan , and Sailor Moon . Here are some of the themed attractions you can’t miss if you’re visiting Universal Studios Japan in the latter half of 2023:

  • Monster Hunter World: Iceborn XR Walk: January 21, 2022 - August 31, 2023
  • Jujutsu Kaisen: The Real 4-D: September 16, 2022 - November 2023

Tips to Make the Most Out of Your Universal Studios Japan Experience

Booking Tickets

  • Try to schedule your visit during regular weekdays instead of weekends and public holidays (like Golden Week) to avoid congested crowds.
  • For smoother entry, you can also reserve tickets in advance online at https://www.usjticketing.com/ .
  • Universal Express Passes can also be purchased beforehand to cut the waiting time in lines for certain attractions inside the park. Note that this pass requires separate payment from the Studio Pass (for entry to Universal Studios Japan). For more information, visit https://www.usj.co.jp/web/en/us/tickets/express-pass#howtouse .
  • For popular attractions like Super Nintendo World and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™, area-timed entry tickets are occasionally required to avoid congestion. These tickets can be secured in designated areas inside the park and are free of charge. Area-timed entry tickets can also be secured through Universal Studio Japan’s official app.

Park Attraction Tips

  • Universal Studios Japan’s official app is a must-download! The app provides useful information on how timed-entry ticketing for certain attractions work; a live update of the estimated waiting time for each ride; detailed information about the attractions, shows, restaurants, and shops; the Universal Studios Japan park map, and more. For more information, click here .
  • Make sure to check the app or the website beforehand for the park’s show and parade schedules so you don’t miss them.
  • Some Universal Studios Japan rides tend to focus on solo experiences (i.e. Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, to name a few) so it’s advised to go for the Single Rider lines instead of the group lines to shorten your queue waiting time.
  • There are many unique food items available at Universal Studios Japan (mostly themed around your favorite characters) so it is best to dine in the park’s in-house restaurants and food stalls.
  • Wheelchairs and strollers may be rented within the park for a certain fee.

Everyone’s favorite long-haired ghost Sadako has even crawled out of the TV right into USJ for her own haunted attraction. There’s trick or treating and a costume parade for the kiddies, or adult scaredy cats, too. Check the official website for a full list of attractions.

Spiderman, dinosaurs, and Jaws, oh my!

For the thrill-seekers, it would be a waste to leave USJ without trying classic rides like Jaws or the more modern, adrenaline-pumping Jurassic Park roller coaster: The Flying Dinosaur.

Marvel fans, make a bee-line for The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman. Winning the world’s best ride award for seven years in a row, this immersive and mind-bending experience never fails to live up to expectations.

If even the idea of roller coasters make you feel queasy or you’ll be traveling with people who don’t quite fit the height limits (children, we’re looking at you), there are plenty of things for you to do too. Take The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Rides like Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey or Flight of the Hippogryph often have lengthy wait times. This is for good reason: short of receiving your letter to Hogwarts, it’s the closest muggles like us can get.

Those more into cute and peppy characters than death eaters will love Universal Wonderland.

You can’t visit Osaka without spending a day at the world-famous Universal Studios Japan. I’ve been to Disneyland before but never visited one of the Universal Parks.

For me, spending the day at USJ was one of the highlights of my trip to Japan. Incredible roller-coasters, famous characters, and delicious food are just some of the things that you’ll find at this awesome theme park.

If you want to spend one day at Universal Studios Japan and you want to find out which are the best rides, you’re in the right place. In this article, I’m dividing the USJ rides into three categories: thrill rides, family rides, and kids rides .

-> Are you planning to explore Osaka? Here are some free things to do in the city .

But before finding out which rides suit your needs best, there are some things that you should know before visiting USJ. Read carefully the next chapter and you’ll have an awesome experience at one of the most popular theme parks in the world!

1. Universal Studios Japan tickets

I highly recommend buying tickets in advance in order to avoid huge queues on the day you want to visit. Unfortunately, you can’t buy tickets directly from the USJ website so I recommend using a trusted re-seller such as Klook (this is one of the re-sellers recommended on the official USJ website).

Once you get your ticket, make sure to add an Express Pass to your cart . I can’t stress enough how busy Universal Studios Japan is and you don’t want to wait for hours in queues instead of having fun on the rides. You’ll find more details about the express pass at the end of this guide.

No time to read now? Pin it for later!

2. Universal Studios Japan tips & tricks

  • you’re not allowed to bring food and drinks with you. Bring some cash to buy some snacks inside the park.
  • the best days to visit Universal Studios Japan are Wednesdays and Thursdays. The weekends are notoriously crowded.
  • for those who want to spend more than a day at USJ, there is a 1.5 day pass . You are allowed to enjoy the rides starting at 3 pm on the first day until the end of the second day.
  • make sure to arrive at least half an hour before the park opens.
  • take advantage of the single rider lanes. It basically means that you’ll be placed randomly on the ride but you’ll save some time which is awesome.
  • while exploring the world of Harry Potter, make sure to try the butterbeer.
  • if you want to feel the magic of Hogwarts, make sure to visit the castle after the sunset. The view is simply magical.

  • The Flying Dinosaur

The Flying Dinosaur roller-coaster at Universal Studios Japan

This over-the-top thrilling experience is exactly what makes USJ so famous. The Flying Dinosaur is the best roller-coaster at Universal Studios Japan and I recommend getting there early or getting an express pass if you don’t want to wait 3 hours to enjoy it.

The Flying Dinosaur will take you through the world of Jurassic Park in an incredible 3-minutes journey. Once you sit down, the seat will turn 90 degrees and you’ll end up face-down with nothing but air between you and the ground.

The ride is fast, confusing, and extremely fun if you’re adventurous. For me, The Flying Dinosaur will forever be my favorite roller-coaster in the world! Are you ready?

Hollywood Dream

Hollywood Dream Backdrop Universal Studios Japan

Another popular attraction at Universal Studios Japan is the Hollywood Dream roller-coaster. This is one of the traditional roller-coasters that you’ll find in any theme park.

Be prepared to cut through the wind on this sensational ride and enjoy a steep and thrilling drop. A nice touch is that you can select a song that will play during the ride. I chose Michael Jackson – Bad because I felt indestructible on this roller-coaster.

If you’re looking for more adrenaline, make sure to also try Hollywood Dream – The Ride – Backdrop. It’s basically the same ride but you’ll be seating backward. You never know what awaits you!

Jurassic Park – The Ride

Jurassic Park - The Ride at Universal Studios Japan

Speaking about the best thrill rides at Universal Studios Japan, we can’t skip Jurassic Park – The Ride. You’ll start the adventure on a mechanical boat and even thought the beginning of the ride seems peaceful, nothing can prepare you for the end.

I’m not gonna tell you what happens because I don’t want to ruin the surprise. Here is a hint – while the dinosaurs are fascinating, be aware of your surroundings and where the boat takes you.

-> To enjoy all these rides, buy your ticket in advance!

4. The best Family Rides at Universal Studios Japan

We’ve talked a lot about thrill rides and some of you might be visiting USJ with your family. In this section, I’m going to share with you which are the best rides for families at Universal Studios Japan.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey

Hogwards Castle Universal Studios Japan

The journey itself until reaching the ride is fascinating. You will have to walk through Hogwarts and you’ll have the chance to see Dumbledore’s office, some of the classrooms and the Room of Requirement.

Once the ride starts, immerse yourself into the ultra-realistic world of Harry Potter without 3D glasses. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is one of the best rides at Universal Studios Osaka and the perfect choice for couples and families.

Sit comfortably in your chair while you’re playing Quiddich, walk through the Forbidden Forest or fly above the Hogwarts Castle. For a Harry Potter fan, this is the ultimate ride!

Good to know: children must be at least 122 cm tall.

Flight of the Hippogriff

Flight of the Hippogriff roller-coaster at Universal Studios Japan

Have you ever dreamed of meeting a Hippogriff? Now you have the chance. This family-friendly roller-coaster will take you on a journey around Hagrid’s home.

This ride is perfect for kids and families due to its low-intensity track. Sit back and enjoy a relaxing yet fascinating journey into Harry Potter’s world.

-> Read more about Japan here

Good to know:  Unaccompanied children must be at least 122 cm. Accompanied children must be at least 92 cm.

People at Jaws - Universal Studios Japan

Head to Amity Village and hop on the Jaws ride. What starts as a quiet boat ride will suddenly turn into a nightmare when the huge man-eating shark appears.

The boatman will do anything in his power to get you out safe. Just do what he says! I loved the Jaws ride and its decor. It looked super-realistic and well-executed. This is definitely one of the top rides at Universal Studios Japan.

The Amazing Adventures of Spider Man

The Amazing Adventures of Spider Man at Universal Studios Japan

Put on your glasses and enjoy an incredible 3D experience. What I loved about this ride is how real everything felt. The images and special effects are great!

This ride will make you feel like a part of the world-famous story. The Amazing Adventures of Spider Man is a great attraction for families and I’m sure you’ll have lots of fun!

Good to know: kids must be at least 122 cm tall if unaccompanied or 102 cm tall if accompanied.

5. The best Kids Rides at Universal Studios Japan

Do you have a small child but still want to go to Universal Studios Japan? Don’t worry, there are plenty of rides for small children around the park. Below are the best rides for kids at USJ. Enjoy!

Despicable Me Minion Mayhem

Minions at Universal Studios Japan

Despicable Me Minion Mayhem is the second most popular attraction in the park and there are huge lines. Make sure to get an express pass to save some hours.

Located in the Minion Park, this ride is truly spectacular. Get ready for a 3D experience (without glasses) which will last for about 25 minutes. The whole story presented is truly captivating and fascinating.

If you have motion sickness, you might want to avoid this ride.

Good to know: if unaccompanied, kids must be 122 cm tall. If accompanied, kids must be 102 cm tall.

Snoopy Studios

Snoopy Studios at Universal Studios Japan

There are three rides at Snoopy Studios USJ, perfect for kids – The Flying Snoopy, Snoopy’s Great Race, and Snoopy Sound Stage Adventure.

A ride on The Flying Snoopy will take you above the clouds. Snoopy’s Great Race is a kids-friendly roller-coaster which will take you on a ride in your favorite character’s world. If you want to meet Snoopy and his friends, make sure to stop at the Sound Stage Adventure. Kids will love it!

Sesame Street

The TV series Sesame Street has fans all over the world. There are countless rides and attractions at the Sesame Street area at Universal Studios Japan that will delight the kids.

Some of them are Elmo’s Go-Go Skateboard, Sesame’s Big Drive or the Cookie Monster Slide. I am sure that kids will have tons of fun here! This is one of the kids-friendly rides at Universal Studios Japan.

Hello Kitty

Explore the Hello Kitty store and buy some cute souvenirs for your kids and loved ones back home. Hello Kitty is the most famous cat in the world and everybody loves her!

You can even attend the Hello Kitty cupcake party in a unique ride, perfect for small children and why not, their parents.

6. Things to know before visiting Universal Studios Japan

USJ is a huge amusement park and it welcomes more than 8 million visitors per year. To put that into perspective, it means that more than 20,000 people visit this park daily.

This is why, apart from the admission ticket I recommend getting an express pass which will allow you to skip the line. The park is very busy and some queues might take up to three and a half hours during peak hours. If you plan to make the most out of your time and enjoy as many rides as possible, an express pass is a must.

Good to know: Express Passes get sold out weeks in advance during peak season. Make sure to buy yours well in advance.

There are three types of express passes, depending on the rides they cover:

  • USJ Express Pass 7

USJ Express Pass 7 is the best pass because it includes many popular rides which usually have endless queues. You’ll save up a lot of time by choosing this pass. It’s perfect for families or couples who want a mix of fun and thrill rides.

There are 4 types of Express Pass 7 . All of them include 6 fixed rides plus one more ride of your choice. The 6 fixed rides are Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Flight of the Hippogriff, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man or Jaws, Hollywood Dream or Backdraft, and Jurassic Park – The Ride or Terminator.

Therefore, you may choose for an additional ride as follows:

  • Space Fantasy The Ride
  • SING on Tour

If you ask me, I would totally go for the Flying Dinosaur. It is by far the best roller-coaster I’ve ever tried and it’s the perfect choice for those looking for a drop of adventure mixed with adrenaline.

  • USJ Express Pass 4

If you’re on a budget and don’t want to overspend, I recommend getting the USJ Express Pass 4 . You’ll have 3 fixed rides included and these are Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man or Jurassic Park – The Ride, and Terminator or Backdraft.

Additionally, you can choose one of the following attractions:

  • Minion Ride
  • Space Fantasy – The Ride

USJ Express Pass 4 is a great choice if you want to enjoy the best rides in the park without overspending. If you’re looking for a thrilling ride, I recommend choosing the Flying Dinosaur. If you’re into Minions, choose the Minion Ride.

  • USJ Express Pass 3

USJ Express Pass 3 includes skip-the-line tickets to only 3 rides inside the park and it’s the cheapest alternative. If you have a little money to spare, I definitely recommend going for the Express Pass 4 or 7.

Here are the rides included in the Express Pass 3 :

  • Jurassic Park – The Ride or Jaws or Backdraft

Good to know: One thing you have to keep in mind is that some of the passes change during the year so it’s best to check them out here before deciding which one to buy.

7. How to get to Universal Studios Japan

Hogwarts Express at Universal Studios Japan

The fastest way to get from Osaka to Universal Studios Japan is to take the JR Yumesaki Line (also known as JR Sakurajima Line) to Universal City Station. From there, you’ll have to walk for about 30 minutes to the park entrance. With a JR Pass , you’ll save tons of money!

Alternatively, you can take the bus from Osaka to USJ. You can find more details here .

To read more about how to get to USJ, click here .

8. Where to stay in Osaka

Osaka is a big city and finding the perfect accommodation might prove challenging. I’ve searched for the best hotels for every budget and below are my recommendations:

  • Budget –  Hokko Marina  –  good location, very clean, super-friendly staff
  • Mid Budget –  Chuan House  –  excellent location, beautiful studio apartment, very clean & modern, friendly staff
  • Luxury –  St Regis Osaka  –  excellent location, luxurious and comfortable rooms with a view over the city, excellent service & staff

A day trip to Universal Studios Japan will make you feel like a child again. Enjoy all the rides and make sure to book your entry ticket in advance. To save time, don’t forget about the express pass or else be prepared for long queues.

Satellite images emerge of oil depot ablaze in Rostov Oblast after drone attack – photos

Skhemy (Schemes), an investigative journalism project by Radio Liberty in Ukraine, has released satellite images revealing the consequences of a drone attack on an oil refinery in Azov in Russia's Rostov Oblast on the night of 17-18 June. The fire was still burning the following afternoon.

Source: Skhemy , with reference to satellite images provided by Planet Labs

Details: The images, taken at 14:30 Kyiv time, show the fire still raging in and around the oil depot, but it is difficult to assess the extent of the damage caused to the refinery since visibility is restricted due to the smoke.

The oil depot that was hit belongs to Azovprodukt. Up to 60,000 tonnes of oil products pass through this Russian terminal every month, and the tanks blazing as a result of the Ukrainian drone attack can hold up to 30,000 cu m of oil products at one time.

The Russian Defence Ministry has not commented on the attack. However, the governor of Rostov Oblast reported that tanks containing oil products had caught fire as a result of a drone attack in Azov.

Background:

Overnight drone attacks on 17-18 June caused fires in fuel storage tanks containing petroleum products in the city of Azov, Rostov Oblast. Russian Telegram channels reported that locals had heard five explosions shortly beforehand.

An Ukrainska Pravda source at the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) said SSU drones had attacked Azovprodukt’s Rostov oil depots and a branch of Donnefteprodukt in the city of Azov, which taken together contain 22 fuel tanks, on the night of 17-18 June.
