Isle Of Man TT: The World’s Greatest Motorsport Event

Next Chapter >

Nothing else compares to the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT). Held annually on the picturesque Isle of Man, a small island situated in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland, the TT races attract the bravest and most skilled riders, as well as a legion of fervent fans, all drawn by the promise of speed, excitement and danger.

The origins of these races can be traced back to 1907, which makes the Isle of Man TT one of the oldest motorsport events still being contested today.

What sets the TT apart from other motorsport events is where the racing takes place.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (224)

The 37.73-mile (60.72km) Snaefell Mountain Course weaves through the island’s villages, countryside, and mountain roads, offering a unique blend of straightaways and sharp turns on public roads closed for the event.

This year, fans lined the banks in big numbers. In fact, the 2024 event – held from late May till early June – had the most spectators since the 2007 centenary TT, with nearly 70,000 people arriving by sea or air to this tiny island nation, almost doubling its population for the fortnight of racing.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (204)

The event is so physically large that 2,000 race marshals are positioned around the course.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (277)

Unlike the controlled environment of a traditional racetrack, the Mountain Course presents natural hazards: stone walls, lampposts, and even the occasional wayward animal. All these elements amplify the risk, demanding not just technical prowess from the riders but also nerves of steel.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (231)

Speed is the essence of Tourist Trophy races. The fastest riders average more than 136mph (218km/h) over a single lap, with top speeds exceeding 200mph (321km/h) along some straights.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (229)

Even shooting the TT is on another level. Take this shot from the approach to Hillberry, located on the 36th mile of the circuit. The spectator-filled grass bank exists just metres from where riders blitz past at upwards of 170mph (270km/h), kicking up dust and grass and leaving a body-shaking wake of wind and noise. It’s intoxicating.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (195)

There are no barriers or massive catch fencing here, not even safety tape. Common sense rules apply. Want to have a race bike pass by at full noise within a metre or two of your face? Hillberry is the place for you.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (227)

This year’s TT had its challenges, inclement weather being the biggest. For all the joy of sitting on a bank watching the racing, it’s less fun when delay after delay halts the action. On a few occasions, the rain caused races to be cancelled outright. As frustrating as that was, it is understandable as rider safety is paramount, and the TT course is challenging enough in the best of conditions.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (162)

Even with all the disruption the weather threw at the organisers, nine of the 10 scheduled races were completed, although some at revised (shortened) distances.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (190)

The bright side of all the weather stoppages was the opportunity to nose around the paddock.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (171)

Here, the big teams are based in large tents kitted out with full workshops’ worth of gear.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (174)

Further down the field, things get a little more modest, with some riders doubling as the mechanic. Whatever it takes to be here.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (177)

Away from the glare of the television cameras and the masses of spectators, crews rushed around their bikes, preparing them for the next race, be it a simple fluids change or an engine rebuild.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (154)

The grid area sits right in the heart of the paddock, and as soon as the PA system fired into life, a sense of excitement always filled the air. In the unmistakable voice of Clerk of the Course Gary Thompson MBE: “Attention paddock, attention paddock, this is race control…” Everyone hopes it’s a call that racing is on.

DSC_3196

Once the signal is given, riders quickly assemble. The larger teams retreat to their remote grid boxes while competitors further down the field grab space in the open. Bikes fire into life to begin their warm-up sequences; blankets shroud tyres that will soon meet the Mountain Course.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (236)

Watching how each rider counted down the minutes was a real eye-opener. Some were relaxed and chatty, while others were focused on the task ahead.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (242)

Every rider who pushes their machine under the start line arch knows the risks that lie ahead. Despite the obvious dangers, more and more riders are signing up to compete. While many chase podium glory, for the majority, simply becoming a TT rider is all that matters.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (247)

The focus will always be on the winners and big stars, though.

Davey Todd is the new rockstar of road racing. He’s the king of swag with an Aussie-style mullet and a beaming smile that excludes a no-fear attitude to lapping the Mountain Course. Having moved to the Milwaukee BMW team this year, things have clicked for him.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (256)

The opening, and sadly only, Super Stock race went Davey’s way, however, the crowning glory was his win in the Senior TT – the blue-riband finale to this year’s Tourist Trophy.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (249)

Just over an hour earlier, my local star Mike Browne claimed a TT podium by finishing third in the Super Twin race, making it onto the rostrum for the second year straight. When I covered a season of  Irish road racing in 2019 , I marked Mike as a star in the making. To be there and see him claim another TT podium was special.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (217)

Local brothers Ryan and Calum Crowe took out both Sidecar races. Meanwhile, Peter Hickman had a lucky win in the Superbike opener.

The greatest of all time – ‘G.O.A.T.’ is an acronym often thrown about, sometimes resulting in passionate debate. Here, there is none: Michael Dunlop is the greatest road racer of all time, and this year he rewrote the Tourist Trophy record books.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (248)

Arriving on the Isle of Man just one win short of his legendary uncle Joey Dunlop’s record for most TT victories, it only took the opening Supersport race for Michael to equal the tally. A few days later he eclipsed it after winning the first Super Twin race.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (206)

Many thought Joey’s tally of 26 wins, having stood since 2000, may never be beaten, so it seemed fitting that it would be the final member of the legendary Dunlop dynasty who would ultimately break the record.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (215)

Although a loose helmet visor likely denied Michael the Superbike victory, and a clutch issue prematurely ended his TT Senior chances, more first-place finishes in the second Supersport and Super Twin races of the 2024 event ultimately took his race win tally to 29 – an astonishing feat for the quiet Ballymoney star.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (185)

While others celebrated victory with sponsors and friends, with Michael it was nearly always the same routine. Head down, shorts on, and straight into prep for the next race.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (151)

For me, the TT is the world’s greatest motorsport event. For two weeks each year, a nation stops, schools close, and public holidays are declared ahead of professional and amateur racers alike attacking the high streets and open roads of the island at wide-open throttle.

Isle_of_Man_TT_2024_on_SpeedHunters_Pic by CianDon (273)

It’s impossible not to love the brilliance of it, accept the risks involved, and leave feeling energised knowing that everyone you meet, be they racers, marshals or spectators, is there living their passion. It’s both mad and brilliant. If you haven’t witnessed the Isle of Man TT in person, you really are missing out.

The Isle of Man TT is indeed the world's greatest motorsport event because you are literally sending it on two wheels on a narrow circuit That takes an immense amount of skill close to even Pikes Peak

racer tourist 200

I would absolutely love to attend the Isle of Man TT as it is such an amazing, and unique event that regardless of whether I like motorcycle racing, I MUST acknowledge that it is the apex of moto racing. Cian, your photos are stunning. ESPECIALLY the panning shots at the corners! All I feel is motion when I look at them.

Cian How much does the winner get? It better be alot for this craziness!! Love to see this in person.

racer tourist 200

Hi David, The Senior TT is the blue riband race, with £25,000 going to the winner from an overall pot of £84,500. The Superbike TT is next best, with £20,000 for the winner, followed by the Supersport (£10,000 to the winner), Sidecar and Superstock (both £8,000) and finally the Supertwin (£6,000). While it may sound big, don't forget that competitors compete in multiple classes, meaning building and running numerous machines. Michael Dunlop had 6 bikes at the TT this year (2x Honda Superbikes, a Honda Superstock, Triumph Daytona 765 Supersport, a Yamaha R6 Supersport and the Paton for the Supertwin)

Cian, this is definitely some of your best work my friend. The jump shots are so clear, it's crazy. Glad everything went great and you made it back home. From what you told me when Sasha and I were with you in 2022, there are a lot of risks for spectactors and photographer, too. Have a good one, Cian.

Paralympic Games Paris 2024: USA's Ezra Frech soars to double Paralympic glory in 24 hours

Ezra Frech of Team United States reacts after winning the gold medal

From a fifth-place finish in Tokyo 2020 to claiming two gold medals at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games in just 24 hours, Team USA's Ezra Frech is on a mission to become the greatest Paralympian of all time.

On 2 September, in the men’s T63 100m final , Frech shocked everyone by claiming his first Paralympic title in a dramatic photo finish—a race no one, including Frech, expected him to win.

Less than 24 hours later, he soared to victory once more, this time in his best event, the T63 high jump , setting a new Paralympic record with a 1.94m jump. His 100-day social media countdown to gold was complete.

From dreaming of gold to manifesting it on the grandest stage, the 19-year-old's meteoric rise to the top of Para athletics has left the world—and himself—in awe.

The genesis of a dream

Frech’s journey to Paralympic gold began long before he understood the magnitude of the dreams he would one day chase. Born with congenital limb differences, Frech received his first prosthetic leg at just 11 months old, and, at the age of four, he ran on his first running blade.

This unforgettable moment ignited a fire within him for movement, speed, and the feeling of freedom that only athletics could provide.

“I remember the feeling to this day,” Frech told Sports Illustrated . “It was epic, it was so impactful. I remember thinking, man, I need to experience this all the time.”

From that moment on, Frech was unstoppable.

He played soccer, basketball, and ran track, determined to compete alongside his peers. But it wasn’t until he attended his first adaptive sports event, the Endeavor Games in Edmond, Oklahoma, at the age of eight, that he realized there was a world of competitive sports specifically designed for athletes like him.

More fuel was added to his fire.

The Road to Tokyo: Fueling the fire

As Frech grew, so did his dreams. In 2016, at just 11 years old, as he watched the Paralympic Games Rio 2016 , the teenager made a bold declaration to his friends and family: he was going to make the U.S. Paralympic team for Tokyo 2020.

“Everyone said I was crazy,” he shared. “It was statistically unlikely. I mean, an 11-year-old saying he’s gonna make the Games in four years is utterly ridiculous.”

Many might have dismissed this as the naive optimism of a child, but Frech was deadly serious. His commitment to his goal never wavered, even as the COVID-19 pandemic postponed the Games by a year.

At 16, he made good on his promise, earning a spot on the U.S. Paralympic team.

However, his experience in Tokyo didn’t unfold the way he had hoped. Competing in the T63 high jump, Frech narrowly missed the podium, finishing fifth by a matter of inches. The disappointment was crushing.

“That is undoubtedly one of the most devastating moments of my entire life,” Frech said. “It’s easy to fail in private. It’s hard to fail on the world stage where everyone sees it.”

And, as he sat alone on the track, watching the medalists celebrate with their flags, Frech made a vow to himself: “Never again.”

He memorialized that moment by setting his phone’s wallpaper to a picture of the podium, the men that had beat him, to serve as a constant reminder of the pain of falling short and the fuel for his relentless pursuit.

Frech left Tokyo a Paralympian, having added the Paralympic flame to the already raging fire within him.

A golden moment, one day ahead of schedule

Fast forward to Paris 2024.

The memory of Tokyo still drove Frech, but it no longer haunted him.

Instead, it became a source of strength, fueling him to new heights - literally. But, before he would take to the high jump pitch, the 19-year-old still had some business to attend to on the track.

Frech lined up for the 100-meter final in Paris with the mindset that this race was merely a warm-up, a "shake out," he called it, for the high jump finals the next day.

But as the race unfolded, Frech found himself in a position he hadn’t fully anticipated.

He stormed back from a slow start, gaining speed and confidence with every stride. As he crossed the finish line, just .02 seconds ahead of Denmark’s Daniel Wagner , Frech realized he had done the unthinkable - he had won his first Paralympic gold medal.

“I’m quite shocked,” the newly-crowned Paralympic champion shared. “I’m still taking it in right now. I was definitely not expecting to go out there and win. I was treating this as a warm-up for the high jump, to get the blood flowing and have a good race."

Frech’s journey to Paralympic gold was meticulously documented on social media, where he began a 100-day countdown with the mantra, “Day X/100 until I win Paralympic gold."

Each day, he posted updates that reflected his unwavering belief in himself, sharing his progress, mindset, and the challenges he faced along the way. This countdown became a powerful narrative, drawing in supporters and serving as a public declaration, and manifestation of his commitment to achieving greatness.

But even though the gold medal around his neck came early, Frech wasn’t satisfied. His eyes were still set on the high jump.

"Funny enough, I actually beat the countdown. But don't think that there is an ounce of complacency in my soul. Tomorrow night we complete the countdown and win gold again," he posted on social media.

The fire was burning brighter than ever.

Soaring to new heights: Frech clinches his second gold

Just 24 hours after his stunning victory in the 100 meters, he returned to the Stade de France for the men's T63 high jump final on 3 September.

Despite the immense pressure, Frech remained focused, even as he struggled to sleep the night before due to the excitement of his 100-meter victory. “I almost had to forget it, leave it in the past to refocus for today," he said. "Luckily, at about 2 p.m., I totally forgot that I won the 100 meters because it was just so far gone, and then I was able to focus up and get the job done,” he told Olympics.com following his final.

But the high jump was Frech's main event, the one where he held the world record. In 2023, at the Para Athletics World Championships in Paris, Frech set the tone for the Paralympics by winning the T63 high jump with a 1.86-meter jump, surpassing his Tokyo best and breaking the world record twice in one day (1.95 meters). These achievements signaled that Frech was not just competing—he was dominating.

He carried that mindset into Day 100 of his Paralympic countdown, knowing this was his moment to shine.

The 19-year-old soared over the bar, clearing a new Paralympic record height of 1.94 meters—14 centimeters higher than his jump in Tokyo (1.80)—and secured his second gold medal of the Paris Paralympics.

Reflecting on his mental preparation, Frech shared, “I’ve been writing down every morning, ‘I’m the Paralympic champion,’ and writing it down at night, speaking it out loud, saying it into the mirror, and journaling it. I have hundreds of pages filled with that same sentence, over and over , just convincing myself that I am the Paralympic champion. So when I went out there, after one miss at 1.85 meters, I sat there reminding myself who I was,” the double Paralympic champion told Olympics.com.

The power of journaling shines once again.

Beyond the medals: A mission to normalize disability

For Frech, the gold medals and world records are significant, but they are not the ultimate goal.

His true mission is to use his platform to change the way the world views disability. He wants to normalize disability and see Paralympians celebrated not just as athletes with disabilities but as elite athletes, period.

“I would trade in every medal, every world record, every national championship title if it meant I could normalize disability in the process,” Frech said. “That's what I'm about. I just know that those accolades are a step to reach that larger goal.”

Frech envisions a future where Paralympians break into mainstream media, where their stories are told not just in the context of overcoming adversity but as examples of excellence in their own right. He dreams of a world where the next generation of Para athletes has role models in the spotlight, showing them what’s possible.

“This is not a pity party for people with disabilities who got active and participated in sports,” he emphasized. “These are the best athletes in the world. They’re just missing a leg. They’re paralyzed. They’re blind. Whatever it might be, [they’re the] best in the world at what they do.”

The double Paralympic champion hopes that his Paris 2024 medals will help advance this mission.

"I believe I was put here on this earth to normalise disability, change perceptions about what is possible as an amputee, winning back-to-back golds, leading the Paralympic movement until 2028. That’s why it was written. The universe gave me the script and all I had to do was this, this, this and this was going to happen tonight."

As Frech looks ahead to the next Paralympics in his home town of Los Angeles in 2028, he is more determined than ever to continue on his path to becoming the greatest Paralympian of all time.

"I have no doubt when the Paralympic Games come to LA in 2028, the Coliseum is going to be sold out," Frech declared.

Mpox is spreading rapidly. Here are the questions researchers are racing to answer

When the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public-health emergency over mpox earlier this month , it was because a concerning form of the virus that causes the disease had spread to multiple African countries where it had never been seen before. Since then, two people travelling to Africa — one from Sweden and one from Thailand — have become infected with that type of virus, called clade Ib, and brought it back to their countries.

racer tourist 200

Monkeypox virus: dangerous strain gains ability to spread through sex, new data suggest

Although researchers have known about the current outbreak since late last year, the need for answers about it is now more pressing than ever. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has spent decades grappling with monkeypox clade I virus — the lineage to which Ib belongs. But in the past, clade I infections usually arose when a person came into contact with wild animals, and outbreaks would fizzle out.

Clade Ib seems to be different, and is spreading largely through contact between humans, including through sex . Around 18,000 suspected cases of mpox, many of them among children, and at least 600 deaths potentially attributable to the disease have been reported this year in the DRC alone.

How does this emergency compare with one declared in 2022, when mpox cases spread around the globe? How is this virus behaving compared with the version that triggered that outbreak, a type called clade II? And will Africa be able to rein this one in? Nature talks to researchers about information they are rushing to gather.

Is clade Ib more deadly than the other virus types?

It’s hard to determine, says Jason Kindrachuk, a virologist at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. He says that the DRC is experiencing two outbreaks simultaneously. The clade I virus, which has been endemic in forested regions of the DRC for decades, circulates in rural regions, where people get it from animals. That clade was renamed Ia after the discovery of clade Ib. Studies in animals suggest that clade I is deadlier than clade II 1 — but Kindrachuk says that it’s hard to speculate on what that means for humans at this point.

Even when not fatal, mpox can trigger fevers, aches and painful fluid-filled skin lesions.

racer tourist 200

Growing mpox outbreak prompts WHO to declare global health emergency

Although many reports state that 10% of clade I infections in humans are fatal, infectious-disease researcher Laurens Liesenborghs at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium, doubts that this figure is accurate. Even the WHO’s latest estimate of a 3.5% fatality rate for people with mpox in the DRC might be high.

There are many reasons that fatality estimates might be unreliable, Liesenborghs says. For one, surveillance data capture only the most severe cases; many people who are less ill might not seek care at hospitals or through physicians, so their infections go unreported.

Another factor that can confound fatality rates is a secondary health condition. For example, people living with HIV — who can represent a large proportion of the population in many African countries — die from mpox at twice the rate of the general population 2 , especially if their HIV is untreated. And the relatively high death rate among children under age 5 could be partly because of malnutrition, which is common among kids in rural parts of the DRC, Liesenborghs says.

Is clade Ib more transmissible than other types?

The clade Ib virus has garnered particular attention because epidemiological data suggest that it transmits more readily between people than previous strains did, including through sexual activity, whereas clade Ia mostly comes from animals. An analysis posted ahead of peer review on the preprint server medRxiv 3 shows that clade Ib’s genome contains genetic mutations that seem to have been induced by the human immune system, suggesting that it has been in humans for some time. Clade Ia genomes have fewer of these mutations.

But Liesenborghs says that the mutations and clades might not be the most important factor in understanding how monkeypox virus spreads. Although distinguishing Ia from Ib is useful in tracking the disease, he says, the severity and transmissibility of the disease could be affected more by the region where the virus is circulating and the people there. Clade Ia, for instance, seems to be more common in sparsely populated rural regions where it is less likely to spread far. Clade Ib is cropping up in densely populated areas and spreading more readily.

Jean Nachega, an infectious-disease physician at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, says that scientists don’t understand many aspects of mpox transmission — they haven’t even determined which animal serves as a reservoir for the virus in the wild, although rodents are able to carry it. “We have to be very humble,” Nachega says.

How effective are vaccines against the clade I virus?

Just as was the case during the COVID-19 pandemic, health experts are looking to vaccines to help curb this mpox outbreak. Although there are no vaccines designed specifically against the monkeypox virus, there are two vaccines proven to ward off a related poxvirus — the one that causes smallpox. Jynneos, made by biotechnology company Bavarian Nordic in Hellerup, Denmark, contains a type of poxvirus that can’t replicate but can trigger an immune response. LC16m8, made by pharmaceutical company KM Biologics in Kumamoto, Japan, contains a live — but weakened — version of a different poxvirus strain.

racer tourist 200

Hopes dashed for drug aimed at monkeypox virus spreading in Africa

Still, it’s unclear how effective these smallpox vaccines are against mpox generally. Dimie Ogoina, an infectious-disease specialist at Niger Delta University in Wilberforce Island, Nigeria, points out that vaccines have been tested only against clade II virus in European and US populations, because these shots were distributed by wealthy nations during the 2022 global outbreak . And those recipients were primarily young, healthy men who have sex with men, a population that was particularly susceptible during that outbreak. One study in the United States found that one dose of Jynneos was 80% effective at preventing the disease in at-risk people, whereas two doses were 82% effective 4 ; the WHO recommends getting both jabs.

People in Africa infected with either the clade Ia or Ib virus — especially children and those with compromised immune systems — might respond differently. However, one study in the DRC found that the Jynneos vaccine generally raised antibodies against mpox in about 1,000 health-care workers who received it 5 .

But researchers are trying to fill in some data gaps. A team in the DRC is about to launch a clinical trial of Jynneos in people who have come into close contact with the monkeypox virus — but have not shown symptoms — to see whether it can prevent future infection, or improve outcomes if an infection arises.

Will the vaccines help to rein in the latest outbreak?

Mpox vaccines have been largely unavailable in Africa, but several wealthy countries have pledged to donate doses to the DRC and other affected African nations. The United States has offered 50,000 Jynneos doses from its national stockpile, and the European Union has ordered 175,000, with individual member countries pledging extra doses. Bavarian Nordic has also added another 40,000. Japan has offered 3.5 million doses of LC16m8 — for which only one jab is recommended instead of two.

racer tourist 200

Monkeypox in Africa: the science the world ignored

None of them have arrived yet, though, says Espoir Bwenge Malembaka, an epidemiologist at the Catholic University of Bukavu in the DRC. Low- and middle-income nations cannot receive vaccines until the WHO has deemed the jabs safe and effective. And the WHO has not given its thumbs up yet. It is evaluating data from vaccine manufacturers, delaying donors’ ability to send the vaccines.

Even when the vaccines arrive, Bwenge Malembaka says, “it’s really a drop in the bucket”. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, estimates that 10 million doses are needed to rein in the outbreak.

Bwenge Malembaka says that the uncertainty over vaccine arrival has made it difficult for the government to form a distribution plan. “I don’t know how one can go about this kind of challenge,” he says. Bwenge Malembaka suspects that children are likely to receive doses first, because they are highly vulnerable to clade I, but officials haven’t decided which regions to target. It’s also unclear how the government would prioritize other vulnerable populations such as sex workers, who have been affected by clade Ib. Their profession is criminalized in the DRC, so they might not be able to come forward for treatment.

Researchers lament that public-health organizations didn’t provide vaccines and other resources as soon as the clade I outbreak was identified, especially given lessons learnt from the 2022 global mpox outbreak. “The opportunity was there a couple months ago to cut this transmission chain, but resources weren’t available,” Liesenborghs says. “Now, it will be more challenging to tackle this outbreak, and the population at risk is much broader.”

Sabrina Carpenter ’s “ Short n’ Sweet ” has won the race for No. 1 on the latest Billboard 200 albums chart, shutting out stiff competition from Travis Scott and his 2014 mixtape “ Days Before Rodeo .”

Carpenter also boasts major real estate on the latest Hot 100 singles list where her latest album single, “Taste,” debuts at No. 2, followed by previously released singles “Please Please Please” and “Espresso” at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. She is first soloist ever to chart her first three top five hits in the sector simultaneously, as noted by Billboard . Carpenter’s in great company: she joins the Beatles, the only act to have ever matched the aforementioned benchmark, and is the third woman in history (behind Swift and Ariana Grande) to chart at least three songs in the top five of the Hot 100 simultaneously.

Scott debuts at No. 2 with a little over 361,000 units — the year’s biggest week for any rap album so far. Its Aug. 23 release date marked the first time the set was available for purchase commercially and via streaming, propelling its album sales to comprise 331,000 units of its total sum.

The competition between Carpenter and Scott was much-talked about throughout the passing holiday weekend as it was reported “Short n’ Sweet” was headed for a No. 1 debut in close proximity to Scott’s “Days Before Rodeo.”

Both Scott and Carpenter released additional digital versions of their albums throughout the tracking week, with Carpenter following a similar approach with alternative digital albums with a series of bonus tracks added : a cut called “Busy Woman,” another dubbed “Needless to Say” and a demo version of her album’s latest single, “Taste.”

Outside of Scott and Carpenter, the only new release in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 this week is Lainey Wilson’s “Whirlwind.” It debuts at No. 8 with 48,000 equivalent album units earned — her best week ever by units and her first Top 10 album ever.

As for the Hot 100 songs, Shaboozey continues to lead at No. 1 with “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” logging 82 million radio airplay audience impressions and nearly 32 million streams.

Sale secures eighth 200-K season as Triple Crown race heats up

Mark Bowman

Mark Bowman

ATLANTA -- Chris Sale set a franchise record, secured another 200-strikeout season and strengthened his bids to win both a Triple Crown and the National League’s Cy Young Award on Tuesday night.

Other than that, it was just another day for the rejuvenated lefty who guided the Braves to a 3-0 win over the Rockies at Truist Park. His latest dominant outing helped Atlanta rebound from a rough weekend and strengthen its bid for a postseason berth.

“A lot of the things he’s doing is very special in my book,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “If you’re with him every day and you’re watching how he competes and what he’s done for us, it’s a Cy Young season.”

  • Complete coverage: Braves' clinch scenarios, tiebreakers, key games and more

Sale set a franchise record as he tallied nine strikeouts over seven scoreless innings, becoming the first Braves pitcher since 1912 (when earned runs became an official National League statistic) to allow two or fewer earned runs in 15 consecutive starts. Lou Fette previously had the record with 14 such starts for the Boston Bees in 1939.

“I grew up watching him,” Braves center fielder Michael Harris II said. “He was nasty and he’s still nasty now.”

racer tourist 200

After losing three of four to the Phillies over the weekend, the Braves were happy to hand the ball to Sale, who now leads the Majors with a 2.46 ERA and 206 strikeouts. His NL-best 16 wins is tied with the Tigers’ Tarik Skubal for the big league lead.

Just 28 pitchers have ever won a Triple Crown, which requires a pitcher to lead his respective league in wins, strikeouts and ERA. The three most recent pitchers to do this were Shane Bieber (in the COVID-shortened 2020 season), Justin Verlander (2011) and Clayton Kershaw (2011).

“I think when you get home and the dust is settled, that's when you start appreciating some of these things and looking back on whatever it is,” Sale said. “I have a job to do and quite honestly, there’s 29 other teams that don’t give a damn about any of the strikeouts I’ve had all year. Whoever I’m facing five days from now, is coming for me. I don’t want to get lost in looking at something that really doesn’t matter right now.”

Focus and tenacity have never been an issue for Sale, whose third-inning strikeout of Drew Romo secured his eighth career 200-strikeout season. He is the 12th pitcher to reach this milestone this many times. The others are Nolan Ryan (15), Randy Johnson (13), Roger Clemens (12), Tom Seaver (10), Max Scherzer (9), Verlander (9), Pedro Martinez (9), Bob Gibson (9), Bert Blyleven (8), Steve Carlton (8) and Gaylord Perry (8).

Sale sits among these legends despite the fact injuries either sidelined or significantly limited him in each of the past four years; he is enjoying this great season after totaling just 151 innings from 2020-23.

Even with this missed time, Sale has notched the second-most 200-strikeouts seasons going back to 2012, his first season as a starting pitcher. Scherzer ranks first with nine.

“I’m happy with where I’m at,” Sale said. “I’m having fun playing baseball and we’re right where we need to be. We’ll try to get hot at the right time and make a push.”

Despite being weakened by a multitude of significant injuries, the Braves remain a half-game ahead of the Mets in the battle for the NL’s final Wild Card spot . They have relied on a rotation that has thrived despite the fact that Opening Day starter Spencer Strider made just one healthy start before suffering a season-ending elbow injury.

“[Sale] has been huge for us,” Snitker said. “When Spencer went down, we needed somebody to step up and he sure did. It’s been fun being around him. He’s a ballplayer’s ballplayer.”

Sale didn’t really sweat until Jorge Soler was unable to secure Ezequiel Tovar’s eventual triple before running into the right-field wall to begin the sixth. Soler’s defensive limitations already added four earned runs to the southpaw’s total over the past month. Without those runs, Sale’s ERA would be 2.24.

But Tovar’s leadoff triple didn’t faze Sale, who responded by notching two straight strikeouts. He then received some defensive assistance when Harris raced to the center-field wall to catch Michael Toglia’s long fly ball.

“The situations I’ve seen him get out of,” Snitker said, “it’s unbelievable to me. The guy is just rock solid.”

Richmond loses NASCAR race weekend; community loses millions of dollars in tourism revenue

racer tourist 200

RICHMOND, Va. -- NASCAR confirmed Tuesday that Richmond Raceway is losing one of its two NASCAR races in the 2025 season.

It would be the first time since 1959, outside the COVID-impacted seasons, that the eastern Henrico track has not hosted two races in a season.

Jordan Bianchi, a reporter for The Athletic, wrote Monday that NASCAR planned to take a June race away from Richmond Raceway and move it to Mexico City.

NASCAR announced on Tuesday that the June 15, 2025 race would take place in Mexico. Richmond Raceway's lone race will take place Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025.

WATCH: 'It doesn't draw the same crowd'

"This is a historic moment for our sport, and specifically for the NASCAR Cup Series, in being able to expand our footprint to Mexico,” NASCAR’s Executive Vice President & Chief Venue & Racing Innovation Officer Ben Kennedy said. “We’ve been bold about our intentions to grow on a global scale, and there isn’t a better place to take the next step in that journey than at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez road course in Mexico City.”

With that announcement, Kennedy confirmed Richmond would only appear one time on the 2025 schedule.

"This has certainly been a journey for us on the scheduling front," Kennedy said. “Our next opportunity was to expand internationally and we said we’ve wanted to do this for a long time but also needed to make sure it was the right time, the right partners and the right location and Mexico City checked every box."

WATCH: Richmond International Raceway changes ahead of 1996 NASCAR race

The Henrico Citizen reported 2009 studies that found race weekend generates nearly $169 million in economic impact for the region and about $42 million in tax revenue.

Richmond Raceway has not yet commented on this development

NASCAR and IndyCar schedule races at Portland International Raceway in August 2025

by Bobby Corser

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — The motorsports world will be focused on Portland in August 2025.

READ MORE | Will Power leads wire-to-wire at Portland to remain in IndyCar championship fight

With NASCAR announcing the Xfinity Series schedule this past Thursday, Portland International Raceway will be featured nationally twice in four weeks.

The NTT IndyCar Series will be at P.I.R. from August 6 to 8, while the NASCAR Xfinity Series will make its return on August 29 and 30.

The Xfinity Series had raced at the permanent road course the last three years in June. NASCAR added a race in Mexico City for 2025, shuffling the schedule.

The Portland weekend will be a stand-alone event, as the Cup Series will be at Darlington Raceway.

The two race weekends will infuse millions of dollars into the Portland economy. Hotels and restaurants around the north Portland facility will be filled with race teams and fans.

One change to the racing calendar is the removal of Formula-E. The all-electric series announced they were headed to Miami for 2025.

Formula-E officials told KATU’s Victor Park back in June that they hoped to return in a couple of years .

Nehru Trophy Boat Race to be held on September 28: Ticket booking, venue, facilities and more

 alt=

After many rounds of speculations, cancellation rumours and discussions, the final date of this year's Nehru Trophy Boat Race (NTBR) has been confirmed. The event, held at the Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, has been scheduled for September 28. The 70th edition of the event was initially planned for August 10 but was postponed in the wake of the Wayanad landslides in July. Around 74 boats, including 19 chundanvallams aka snakeboats had registered to participate in the nine categories of events in NTBR this year. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race Society (NTBRS) had earlier demanded September 28 as the new date for the race.  How to book tickets? The online ticket booking facility for NTBR generally opens via its website around a month before the event. Spectators can also walk into the event to book the seats of their choice, as per availability. KSRTC depots and websites also give out tickets on an FCFS basis.

Facilities this year A few months ago, it was announced that a luxury box would be introduced in the pavilion to watch the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. The ticket price for the Luxury Box was Rs 10,000 per head. Family tickets were Rs 25,000 (for three persons). According to organisers, a person can enjoy the boat race from the luxury box with all the latest comfort and amenities. Other options for spectators to watch the boat race are the Tourist Gold Nehru Pavilion (Rs 3000), Tourist Silver Nehru Pavilion (Rs 2500), Rose Corner (Rs 1500), Victory Lane Wooden Gallery (Rs 500), All View Wooden Gallery (Rs 300), Lake View Gold Wooden Gallery (Rs 200) and Lawn (Rs 100). Over two lakh spectators were expected earlier for the race, but the delay will likely affect the turnout.
