ULTIMATE Guide to Jomalig Island: Golden-Sands Beach of Quezon

A previously untouched tropical getaway, Jomalig Island in Quezon Province is now one of the most sought-after beaches especially during the summer. Here’s an Updated Travel Guide to Jomalig Island, including personal tips for your trip!

I actually went here for an outreach event with Alon ng Pag-asa in 2015. At the time, Jomalig Island was still pretty much unheard of. It isn’t until a year later when it started getting around in social media.

Fast forward to the present — Jomalig Island is now more open to tourists. There are various resorts & homestays you can stay at and a standard island hopping tour you can book around the island.

Our Trip to Jomalig Island

I went to Jomalig Island as part of an outreach event by a group which will later be known as Alon ng Pag-asa. This trip is significant to me for a couple of reasons: I had my first taste of outreach work, I’d been wowed by the magnificence of Salibungot Beach in the island, and it’s also where I met Hali (my current photographer boyfriend).

Our group chartered a private bus. We rode from Manila to Ungos Port in Real, Quezon for 3-4 hours. From there, we took a 6-hour ride to Salibungot Beach, which was our camping ground.

After much eating, sleeping in the boat and watching the seemingly endless sea, we had an exciting glimpse of Salibungot Beach.

We camped at Salibungot Beach. As per the locals, this is the best place to stay in the island. We positioned our tents under the shade of agoho trees, about 15 minutes away from residential houses where fresh water for bathing is available. We saw another group of backpackers camped near the houses, which was a practical choice since the sand was so soft it was tiring to walk distances.

We cooked & prepared meals to last for our 3-day stay.

The morning after, we held the outreach event in Barangay Gango. We gave out school supplies and groceries, among others. We also held games and a feeding program. It was very heartwarming. The barangay officials said they were thankful because their area is often overlooked by other organizations.

Of course, during our stay in Jomalig Island, we made sure to enjoy its untouched beauty!

Salibungot Beach has one of the clearest waters I’ve seen as of yet. It was actually one of my few beaches that made gasped in awe. Also notable is its sand, which is a unique golden color like nothing I’ve seen before.

Local kids walked by selling fresh coconuts, so we brought one for each of us. We love fresh coconuts — who doesn’t? Hali even calls me takaw-buko. I don’t think we have enough of them in the city. The coconuts in Jomalig Island seem self-refilling because there’s so much coconut water in one piece.

We swam in the crystal-clear water. Some of my companions jumped from the loft area in the boat down to the open sea. (I was in a life vest being drifted away by the waves.)

We also island hopped to the snorkeling spots around the island.

The sunset here is amazing as well. When night came, we lit bonfires, cooked marshmallows on sticks, and star gazed.

Lastly, I’m grateful for our boatmen. We were supposed to take a public passenger boat back to the mainland, but they insisted that we stay in their boat without asking for additional fee for what is supposed to be a private service. They simply called for more passengers to offset the cost. Also, they made us free lunch!

This is one of my most memorable trips I’ve had. Not only was I captivated by the untouched beauty of Salibungot Beach in Jomalig Island, I also had a great bonding experience with my fellow volunteers and the locals in the island.

Jomalig Island is a popular destination for the summer. Jomalig is actually the smallest and least populated municipality in Quezon. Its name comes from the word “humalig” (which was later changed to humalik) from an old legend about lovers in the island.

If you’re coming here, take into consideration the long commute especially if you have children.

How to get to Jomalig Island

From Manila, there are 2 options to get to Jomalig Island in Quezon Province.

From Manila via this route, it takes 9-11 hours to reach Jomalig Island.

Head to Legarda Terminal in Manila. Ride a bus bound for Infanta and get off at Real, Quezon. Night schedules are at 11:30PM and then 1:00AM. Morning schedule starts at 4AM. Travel time is 4-5 hours.
Then ride a tricycle to Ungos Port.

Alternatively, you can also ride van. Travel time is 3-4 hours. The van may be unpredictable because you need to wait for the seats to fill up, but the driver can let you off directly at Ungos Port.

From Ungos Port, ride a passenger boat to Jomalig Island. Boat schedule starts at 5AM up to 10AM daily. Travel time is 4-6 hours.

Seating is first come, first served. It’s best to arrive at Ungos Port and buy your tickets early to get good seats.

During off season, passenger boats to Jomalig Island are irregular. An alternative way to get to the island is by taking a passenger boat to Patnanungan Island. Travel time is 4-5 hours, fare is P350 per person. From there, charter a private boat to Jomalig Island. Travel time is 1 hour, boat rate is around P1500.

It is also possible to reach Jomalig Island via Atimonan (Quezon) and Panganiban (Camarines Sur). However, boat schedule is irregular.

Once you arrive in Jomalig Island, you need to register and pay appropriate fees. Then ride a habal-habal to your resort. Fare is P50 per ride.

Here’s a sample 3-day itinerary to Jomalig Island.

There are tour agencies offering a 2-day trip to Jomalig Island. Personally, I would recommend going for a 3-day trip instead so you won’t get too tired from the travel.

Salibungot Beach is considered the main beach in Jomalig Island. However, it is no longer allowed to camp here. Instead, there are other resorts & homestays you can book in the area.

For groups, there are cottages and transient houses available.

You can explore the island by going on an island hopping tour or renting a habal-habal.

Here are the places you can visit:

Puno ng Walang Poreber . A lonesome tree in a grassfield. This is a popular IG spot among millennials.
Kanaway Beach . A stretch of beach with rock formations. It faces the Pulo and Manlanat islets.
Golden Sand Beach . A beach with picturesque sandbar.
Turtle Rock Formation . As its name suggests, this is a big rock shaped like a turtle.
Little Boracay . A powdery white-sand beach likened to Boracay Island . The beach is under Panama Beach Resort.
Lingayen Cove or Little Batanes Island . Another white-sand beach. You can climb atop some rocks to get a good view of the beach.
Salibungot Beach . This is considered the main beach in Jomalig Island. Along the shore is an I Love Jomalig signage. (The signage wasn’t there yet when we visited. I hope that they had put it somewhere else rather than along the beach.)

Here are some important information about Jomalig Island.

It’s best to visit Jomalig Island during summer. During ber-months up to January, waves can be rough and boat trips may be cancelled. As such, traveling is not generally recommended.
Tricycle and habal-habal are the main modes of transportation in the island.
As of 2023, most — if not all — resorts now have stable electricity.
There are eateries in the island; resorts also offer meals for reasonable fees. I suggest taking this opportunity to enjoy fresh seafood and coconuts.
There is an ATM machine in the island. To be safe, it’s still best to bring cash with you.
There is decent data for both Smart and Globe.
Currently, there are no high-end resorts in the island. If you’re the type who’s okay with modest accommodations and camping, you will enjoy staying in Jomalig Island.

A safe budget for a 3D/2N stay is around P4000 per person.

Regarding the incident of boatmen throwing garbage into the open sea, were you able to report it to the local government??

Sadly, no. We didn’t know how to handle incidents like that. We simply talked to the boatmen and they said they’ve always been doing that. 🙁 Well, the tourism in Jomalig Island is booming now so I hope the local government has now stricter regulations on garbage disposal.

I fell in love with Jomalig. And if you will ask me if there’s a chance to visit it again despite of the travel time? It’s definitely a big YES! I super love this island. The people, the golden powdery sand, the crystal clear water.

My friends and I are planning to go there but we still haven’t decided on a date. I think I’d love to bring some things for the children too, you guys got a great idea bringing in those donations.

Quezon is blessed with many beautiful beaches within reach from Manila and nearby cities. One of them is Cagbalete Island. Located in Mauban, this stunning destination has a golden shore, clear, mirror-like waters, diverse wildlife and a grove of agoho trees. The surroundings are picture-perfect and relaxing. From Manila get on a bus bound for Lucena; the fare is around P210. Once at the Grand Terminal, board a van or bus going to Mauban for about P70. From Mauban, you can walk to the port and get on a public boat to Cagbalete for P100.

If you are looking for an island getaway, Jomalig is the one you’re looking for. The island is around six hours away by boat from mainland Real, Quezon. Its golden-sand shore, turquoise waters and idyllic ambiance make it an ideal place to forget your worries. Salibungot Beach and Kanaway Sand Bar are must-visits. To get to the island, board a bus bound for Real in Legarda, Manila for approximately P200. Once in Real look for the port with boats going to Jomalig. The fare is around P400.

Island-hopping

Quezon is a near destination where you can enjoy island-hopping. Borawan, Dampalitan, and Puting Buhangin in Padre Burgos are places you can visit during this activity. Borawan may be developed with toilets and a store, but you can still catch a glimpse of its natural beauty. Dampalitan Island is an ideal spot to watch the sunset, go camping and just bum around the beach. Puting Buhangin has a whitish shore and azure waters. To reach the jump-off point for the islands, get on a bus bound for Lucena Grand Terminal. The fare is around P210. From the terminal, board another bus going to Padre Burgos for P60 and alight at QCRB Bank. From the bank hire a tricycle to Aplayan. You’ll see many boats for rent for island-hopping. The rate is P1800 per boat for three stops. It can accommodate up to eight persons.

Balagbag Falls

For those who are looking for a different place to visit, Balagbag Falls is a possible day trip. This multi-tiered waterfall has a cool pool to soak in. You can go up to the second tier and jump off the cliff to get your adrenaline pumping. To get here, board a bus bound for Real, then alight at the Real-Mauban junction. The bus fare is around P170 to P195 depending on if you rode the ordinary or aircon bus. From the junction, board a jeep bound for Mauban and tell the driver you’re going to Balagbag. There’s a P20 entrance fee.

Quezon Province, or commonly known as Quezon, is a province included in the Calabarzon Region in Luzon , Philippines.

How to get to quezon from manila.

The main way to get to Quezon from Manila is by riding a bus. There’s a lot of bus companies that offer rides to Lucena and one of which is JAC Liner in Buendia, Pasay. From there, ride a bus with a “Lucena City/Grand Central” or “Lucena/Dalahican” signage. Fare is around PHP 270 and the trip can last up to 4 hours.

BEST TIME TO VISIT QUEZON

If you don’t know, the Philippines has only 2 seasons- wet and dry season. You should be prepared with the weather in Quezon because it is hot and humid during the months of March to May, and can extend up to June!

However, the wet season starts from June to November. But due to climate change (which affects the Philippines the most), the rainy season can start as early as 3rd week May.

We recommend that you visit Quezon during the month of January, as the weather is expected to be the coldest of the year plus you won’t compete with the locals during December’s holiday rush (traffic and all).

DAILY BUDGET TRAVEL IN QUEZON

There are many affordable places to eat and stay near Manila and Quezon. The cost of living in the country itself is quite low compared to other countries. You can expect to find cheap meals at local eateries for less than 100 PHP while a hearty, three-course meal for two in a mid-range restaurant costs around 700 PHP , which is only $14 USD .

Beer costs around 40-70 PHP a bottle. Street food is abundant all over the Philippines and can be afforded for as low as 20 PHP for a rich assortment of food.

Cagbalete Island , which is famous for its miles long stretch of which sand and sandbar from the shoreline during low tides. You can do different activities here like playing beach volleyball, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, island hopping, and many more.

HOW TO GET TO CAGBALETE ISLAND FROM MANILA

You have to ride a bus to Lucena City prices around 260 PHP and the travel time is 3 hours. Once in Lucena you have to take a local bus to Maluban around 70 PHP and 2 hours travel time. Once you get to Maluban, you have to ride a boat 100 PHP to Cagbalete Island.

3. JOMALIG ISLAND

Surrounded by clean and clear turquoise water and golden sand, Jomalig Island is one of Quezon tourist spots that you should not miss visiting. It is an isolated island located in the Polillo area of Quezon.

You can do a lot of activities here such as swimming, island hopping, snorkeling, camping, having picnics, and see the mangroves in Sitio Landing.

4. SALIBUNGOT BEACH

One of Quezon tourist spots includes Salibungot Beach, which has golden sand! It is an unusual but beautiful beach in Jomalig Island that you will surely love. Locals and tourists love to camp here especially at night.

5. KANAWAY BEACH

This is also called the Sunrise Beach of Jomalig. Just like the Salibungot Beach, it has golden sand but not as golden as Salibungot’s. You can go to the nearby islets while staying in Kanaway Beach. One is called Pulo islet and the other one is Manlanat Islet.

6. BALESIN ISLAND

Located in Polillo, Quezon, Balesin Island is a tropical island and barangay. It’s already a private island called Balesin Island Club, owned by Alphaland Corporation.

7. PUTING BUHANGIN AND KWEBANG LAMPAS

Puting Buhangin is a white-sand beach with clear blue waters in Pagbilao, Quezon. You can set a tent here to camp but there are also cottages which you can rent. You’ll definitely enjoy swimming in this quiet place

There’s a cave in Puting Buhangin called Kwebang Lampas. You can enter but make sure to wear a life vest since the water inside can be deep and the rocks inside are sharp.

8. DAMPALITAN ISLAND

After visiting Puting Buhangin, you can go to Dampalitan Island next. These Quezon tourist spots are just near to each other, so you can just rent a boat to get to Dampalitan Island. You can set up a tent here for camping overnight.

The island is located in Padre Burgos, Quezon.

9. lucban church.

Lucban Church is one of the most famous churches in Quezon and is located in A. Racelis Ave, Lucban, 4301 Quezon. It’s also known as the San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Parish Church.

10. TAYABAS BASILICA

Also known as the Minor Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel, Tayabas Basilica is the largest church in Quezon Province. Locals call it “Susi ng Tayabas” because it was built in the shape of a key, or susi.

11. KAMAY NI HESUS SHRINE

Or also called the Hand of Jesus Shrine in English, this is more than just a church. It has a replica of Noah’s Ark where one can take pictures, a family-friendly park where families can rest after the mass. This is one of the famous Quezon tourist spots visited by pilgrims during the holy week.

12. balagbag falls.

Located in Real, Quezon, Balagbag Falls is one of Quezon tourist spots to visit. To enjoy the views and take beautiful pictures, climb to the top and you’ll have a better view. Water here is abundant so you will really enjoy swimming here.

13. MT. BANAHAW

Mt. Banahaw is a potentially active volcano in Quezon and the tallest mountain in the Calabarzon region. If you want to hike Mt. Banahaw, you must secure a permit first from the Office of the DENR-PASU (Mts. Banahaw-San Cristobal Protected Landscape) in Pagbilao, Quezon.

FESTIVALS IN QUEZON

15. pahiyas festival.

Also known as Harvest Festival, Pahiyas Festival is dedicated to San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers. It is celebrated every May 15 of the year in Lucban, Quezon.

People competitively decorate their homes using the fruits and vegetables they have harvested and people can pick up those harvest for free! These decorations are judged by officials and the winner will get a prize.

16. NIYOGYUGAN FESTIVAL

Niyogyugan Festival highlights the main crop of the province- Niyog or Coconut . This week-long celebration, celebrated every August, is one of the most spectacular and awaited events in Quezon.

What to expect at the Niyogyugan Festival? Free concerts, pageants, fairs, and a grand parade awaits the tourists coming to visit this celebration.

17. MAUBANOG FESTIVAL

This 7-day festival celebrates the rich culture and history of Quezon, as well its tasty cuisine and most importantly, the locally fermented only-in-Mauban nipa wine, or popularly known as Lambanog. Wine makers wait for this event to sell their lambanog to locals and other tourists.

This joyous festival also includes other festive events such as street dancing contests, boat race, wine drinking contest, concerts, agricultural exhibits, fireworks display, and many more! It is held every July.

FOOD TO TRY IN QUEZON

Lucban longganisa.

This is a local sausage made from pork and it originates from Lucban, Quezon. What distinguishes it from other longganisa in the Philippines is its use of oregano and sour, garlicky taste.

PANCIT HABHAB OR PANCIT LUCBAN

Though it looks similar to the normal pancit, Pancit Habhab or Pancit Lucban is different. It uses dried flour noodles (also known as miki Lucban) and is best eaten with vinegar. It’s actually a street food in Quezon because you can find it everywhere being sold in banana leaves.

CASSAVA CAKE

This is a traditional moist cake loved by every Filipino, and it’s also very famous in Quezon. It’s made from grated cassava, coconut milk, and condensed milk with a layer of custard on top. You can see it on Filipino gatherings or eaten as an afternoon snack.

Lambanog is a local wine in the Philippines, also called the nipa wine. It’s made from fermenting nipa leaves and it’s known for its unique aroma and taste.

When it comes to stunning islands, white sand beaches, crystal blue oceans, and island hopping activities, Quezon Province has always been a favorite destination. Quezon holds the distinction of being one of the Philippines’ most cost-effective tourist attractions when compared to well-known locations that can set you back hundreds of pesos.

1. Alibijaban Island in San Andres, Quezon

The Philippines’ Bondoc Peninsula’s southeast coast is home to the small island of Alibijaban. It is coextensive with the barrio of the same name and has administrative ties to the municipality of San Andres in the province of Quezon .

It’s a sizable island! There are also several huts and lodging options there, but you can also bring your own tent and search for a better place to set it up. Since the Island is only powered by solar energy, there is a restricted supply of electricity there. You must pay 25 pesos to charge your devices.

On the island, there is a store where you can buy snacks, drinks, and other foods. You don’t need to be concerned about the meals because you may ask a local to prepare for you for a small cost. Please remember to bring your trash bags and properly dispose of your rubbish.

2. Zigzag Road(Bitukang Manok), Atimonan Quezon

The Old Zigzag Road serves as a crossing point between Southern Philippines and Northern Quezon. One of the most hazardous routes in the nation is this one. Even the majority of drivers avoid using this route out of fear. For some people, it can be an adventure, but there is some risk involved.

The reason why this road is referred to as “Bitukang Manok” by the locals is compelling—they think it resembles the structure of a chicken’s intestine. If one can understand Filipino, the name alone tells how hazardous the journey is.

Many bikers and riders use this road in search of adventure, and they upload their videos on YouTube. You can watch such films to get a sense of what riding a motorcycle is like.
