Polica (formed in 2011) is an American indie, synth pop, alternative rock group hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the U.S.

The band is formed of Ryan Olson on production and singer Channy Leaneagh. Leaneagh spawned from a musical family and attended Ramsey Fine Arts School where she learned to dance, play the violin and perform. After graduating from high school Leaneagh met Alexei Casselle who became an acoustic duo and in 2005 married. The pair formed folk-rock duo Roma di Luna and released three independent albums together.

After the professional break up of Roma di Luna and personal break-up of her marriage, Leaneagh was looking for something novel and Ryan Olsen invited her to join his Ganyngs supergroup project alongside Justin Vernon, P.O.S., Har Mar Superstar and members of Megafaun. After which Olsen convinced the singer to experiment with a synth pop, R&B sound and enlisted the help of Chris Bierden on bass and back-up vocals, and Drew Christopherson and Ben Ivascu on drums.

Poliça released their debut album in February 2012 on the label Totally Gross National Product founded by Drew Christopherson and Ryan Olsen. The album features strong manipulation of the singers voice and received positive critical acclaim. The band subsequently played SXSW festival and became known for their intense live-performances across the U.S. and Europe with their funky bass and powerful pair of drummers.

The band followed their debut up with “Shulamith” in 2013, named after the feminist Shulamith Firestone. The album reached No. 33 in the UK Albums charts and its lead single “Tiff” features the experienced voice of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon.

Live reviews

Poliça....is it a Latinate name for the local force, the Spanish bobby? Apparently not. According to the Minneapolis five-piece the name is Polish for “policy”, an unwritten code that the band members live and record by, and it’s certainly done them just fine so far after two albums and a series of much-talked-about live performances. 2012’s Give You the Ghost and 2013’s Shulamith marked Poliça out as a top-notch electronic pop band with more than a hint of recycled trip hop to their remarkable rhythms. Producer and general recluse Ryan Olsen (he refuses to appear live with the band) describes the music as “Drums, bass, synths, me, women” and that’s a pretty fair reflection of what you hear when you see this band live. You’re immediately taken by the stage presence of the elfin Channy Leaneagh, who writhes and dances in front of her banks of synths before unleashing her stunning voice, which is often treated with effects that only make the impact that more powerful. Poliça use two drummers when playing live, and their timing is impeccable; you will never catch Drew Christopherson and Ben Ivascu out of step with each other and this means that tracks like ‘Dark Star’, ‘Lay Your Cards Out’ and the clattering ‘Chain My Name’ become powerful beyond what’s on the record, but never overpowering the captivating Leaneagh. Given Leaneagh’s passion for feminism it’s always worth sticking around for a Polica encore as you’ll hear a cover of Lesley Gore’s ‘You Don’t Own Me’. It’s stunning simply for her naked vocal, reminding you that while you can throw all the instrumentation you like at a live show, the singer will always be the star when she’s got a voice that’ll stop you in your tracks.

Unfortunately the concert was not as good as it has could have been. The sound mixing was horrible with too much und bad basses leaving Channys vocals behind. Herself seemed very shy and stressed out with very little contact to her fans. Badly there were many unknown songs and only little old ones what made the concert not very easy going. The whole gig was far too short, too with only one encore, what left me little disappointing. Hopefully Polica learns more about good live performance in the future as they are very good musicians after all.

Little lady makes big noise at the Roundhouse.

I always worry when a band uses up it's better known numbers by halfway through the concert: are they playing a short set it are they worried about keeping the crowd engaged.

Not a problem last night as this was a confident and sometimes mesmerising performance.

Two big and powerful drummers and a bassist and then Chany. Her voice is unique, even with echo and distortion. It is the songs which provides a jazz feel to some of the numbers and you can see her concetrating on the accuracy of the notes, though she seemed to be having problems with her ear piece.Perhaps a bit more contact with the crowd woukd have helped.

My other gripe is the use of pre recorded tracks. The rhythm was powerful and live but the "tunes" were all backing tracks. I'd have liked a fifth band member, even if they were just pressing buttons on a key board. Seeing no one on stage playing while music was belting out is always disconcerting: not quite live!

But I loved the range of the songs , the pounding rhythms and above all her voice.

I am still within the firm opinion that Poliça are one of the most exciting things to happen to alt-pop music in quite a long time. The debut album 'Give You A Ghost' was a masterclass in moody, dark and downtempo indietronica and quickly gained the band a cult-like following and the esteem deserved from a number of respected publications.

This evening the group is lead onto stage by a bright eyed Channy Leaneagh who comes dressed appropriately all in black. Playing their debut album in its near entirety allows the audience to step inside the twisted world and view every twist, turn and change in these complex synth pop packets. 'Amongster' is equally as brooding as the record version whilst 'I See My Mother' has a wonderfully hypnotic quality. Poliça are undoubtedly an acquired taste due to the complexity of their narratives and the sonar structures of their music yet for those who invest the time, the rewards are staggering.

Poliça far succeeded my expectations! At the start of their set they placed several songs from United Crushers. Maybe its due to not listening to the newest album enough, but it these songs did not seem to flow as well with me as I know their previous albums do. However, they looked quite in sync with what they were playing in terms of enjoyment. Then they switched to their old content... And it was magical! The music pulsed the room, Channy Leaneagh vocals were so on point, and the change in sound from new to old felt so much more natural. "Very Cruel" was explosive and spiritual. By the end, when they played a couple more songs from United Crushers, I was completely sold this new record. The lighting game was also perfect!

We saw Polica performing the final show of their United Crushers spring US tour at The Bottleneck in Lawrence,KS. Chaney was great and the band was exceptional. They had limited conversation with crowd during a 1 1/2 hour long set, but their music was very tight and well received by about 150 fans that were clearly very well versed in Polica's work.

The encore consisted of two songs including a great version of "Chain My Name" that had the crowd moving. They performed a mix of songs from their 3 albums.

Ok so the concert was good. Polica were on form, haunting music delivered with a new line up of musicians that played an array of different instruments very well. Channy was mesmeric. However Give You the Ghost was by far their best album and so it was a disappointment not to hear any of the tracks from that album, shame really because their collaboration with Stargaze is a way forward for them musically but please do not forget your roots and what you managed to produce on your own.

"Lime Habit" was performed with passion and style- as were the other tunes, but the best part was watching the dual drum sets! Most all their songs, except Lime Habit, began rather slow, yet the direction was clear and each one ended with solid vibes- just making you want more. A band going places for sure. Opening band was MOTHXR - another band who is able to creatively blend the dark side with solid rhythm: think " Stranger". Would love to see both bands again!!

She looks weird with that blonde hair. Why? you looked so beautiful with your dark hair before, going blonde is sooooooooooooo mainstream!

anyway, you're music is awesome, your live performances are great and I only hope some day you'll be allowed to play in Berghain Panorama bar, because you deserve the best possible sound on earth.

Sting reveals why The Police will never ever be reuniting again

16 May 2023, 10:27

In a new interview, Sting has poured cold water on rumours of a future reunion with The Police.

By Thomas Curtis-Horsfall

Facebook share

The internal fighting which led to The Police's eventual break up was well-documented.

In 1984, the new wave trio were arguably the biggest band in the world, but would call it quits that year.

Throughout their seven-year career together as The Police , creative tensions between bassist and singer Sting , drummer Stewart Copeland , and guitarist Andy Summers would frequently boil over.

When they disagreed, not only did they have a difference of opinion, sometimes they'd even come to blows in physical altercations.

So once they'd reached the peak of their powers together as a band, all three members decided to go their separate ways.

  • The Police's Stewart Copeland says trio are good friends now, after years of "tension"
  • The Police's 10 best songs ever, ranked
  • The Story of... 'Every Breath You Take' by The Police
  • Sting performs The Police classics from home studio for ‘In My Room’ set - video

That was until their reunion in 2007 when they toured the world as The Police once again, in what became the third-highest-grossing tour of all time (at the time).

Not only was it a huge commercial success, their tour also courted enormous critical praise, leaving the door open for another potential coming together.

Steward Copeland recently revealed in his interview with Smooth Radio that despite "a lot of the tension" they shared, the trio are now back on good terms once again.

Sting has followed up with his own new interview in Music Week however, pouring cold water on rumours of a future reunion.

The Police called it quits in 1984 after years of in-fighting and

When asked if he thought bands should reunite ever, he laughed: "Once!" before going on to explain that bands "should do it once and the timing should be right."

"When the Police reunited, it had been long enough and it was the right time to do it. And I'm taking credit for that because that was my decision" Sting continued.

"Doing it again would just be gratuitous and that won't happen. But we did it, and everyone was happy that Mum and Dad got back together again and had one last fling."

The ' Fields Of Gold ' singer also agreed with Copeland's assessment of why tensions between the three bandmates opening reached explosive levels.

The Police Band Breakup

"It's an intense relationship. You start out in a band together and you live together; you sleep in the van together; you share hotel rooms. Your life is completely welded with the other guys in the band, and that's intense."

"We still love each other and respect each other, but I'm happy not to be in a band. I have much more freedom and when I have my own band, everyone's role is very clear. We just get on with the job."

"When a young band starts out, the roles are much more flexible and that creates tensions. But it's all-natural, of course...I think it gives you a competitive energy, a buzz."

Sting was also fairly candid about how his ego affected how the band began to perform together, and feels it right to stay as separate entities.

"There comes a point where it just gets in the way of the creative process and you're dealing with ego as opposed to actual musical ideas or the currency of musical ideas. When the flow stops, that's when a band has to break up."

Sting went on to confirm that he, Copeland and Summer hadn't considered writing more songs together, saying: "It was – what's the word – nostalgia, with recreating that thing for a short time. No, we didn’t even try."

Stewart Copeland seemed more positive about a full-scale reunion during his Smooth Radio interview however, saying: "Hey, look, I'm optimistic. I would give us at least a 1% chance."

"You know, we are enjoying each other's company. We get along really well. In fact, even when we were screaming at each other in the studio over dinner, we'd be laughing and joking. And we were deeply bonded."

"We went through a lot together, and we are like siblings, deeply bonded. And it's nice like this" Copeland told Smooth's very own Jenni Falconer .

"And I'm enjoying in fact, we have laughed amongst ourselves. We're in touch by email and so on. We send each other daft Instagram clips and so on."

At least the trio are back on good terms, but it doesn't look like they'll be hitting the road or the studio together any time soon.

Band history

Early years (1976–1978).

The Police were the brainchild of drummer Stewart Copeland , who by the end of 1976 saw that the progressive rock scene of excess in music and budget, as typified by his current group Curved Air , was dying. Copeland believed that the future lay in the growing punk scene and determined that he should form such a group himself, even having a name for it ( The Police ) before having recruited any other members.

On 1976-12-05 , Curved Air performed one of their last concerts at Newcastle Polytechnic and Copeland was then taken by friend Phil Sutcliffe ] to see one of Phil's favored bands, Last Exit , perform at St. Mary's College . Copeland didn't care for the music, but was impressed by their bass player Sting --mostly for his skills with his instrument, although it was a bonus that he could sing as well. After the performance, Copeland met Sting for the first time and invited him to come to London to join his group.

Copeland met guitarist Henry Padovani near the same time at the Roxy Club in London and also invited him into his forming band. At first Padovani and Copeland jammed some with Stewart's brother Ian and Curved Air's singer/Stewart's girlfriend Sonja Kristina . In January of 1977 , Sting did come to London and began rehearsing with Stewart and Henry at Stewart's squat at 26 Green Street, Mayfair . Their first photo-session as a band would take place on 1977-01-22 and on 1977-02-12 they recorded their first single, " Fall Out "/" Nothing Achieving ".

In March and April of that year, Copeland, Padovani and Sting toured as a support act for Cherry Vanilla as well as Wayne County & The Electric Chairs . Stewart's brother Miles arranged getting them on the Cherry Vanilla tour as she had only come to England to tour with her guitarist and needed a bass player and drummer--hence Stewart and Sting could perform double-duty. In May, ex-Gong musician Mike Howlett invited Sting and former Eric Burdon And The Animals guitarist Andy Summers to form Strontium 90 with him, as a project band for a Gong reunion. The drummer Howlett had in mind for this band, Chris Cutler, was unavailable to play, so Sting brought along Stewart. Strontium 90 recorded several demo tracks at Virtual Earth Studio , and then performed at a Gong reunion concert in Paris on 1977-05-28 . The foursome also performed at a London club as " The Elevators " in July 1977 , but found it difficult to work as a band with two bass players.

The Police were not finding great success as most of their audiences were not buying into their "punk" act. Indeed, the only member of the band seen as truly punk was Padovani, with his more-limited guitar skills, which Sting felt was hampering their abilities to play better material. Summers was a much more experienced guitarist and wanted in The Police , and Sting wanted him there as well. Copeland was not convinced this would do their shaky punk credibility and good, but briefly they tried performing as a 4-piece band with two guitarists. Soon after an aborted recording session with producer John Cale on 1977-08-10 , Sting told Padovani that it had been agreed upon by the others that he should leave the band. The remaining lineup of Copeland, Sting , and Summers would endure for the rest of Police history.

Sting felt freed at this point to continue writing newer, more complex material for the band to perform and try to put together for an album. Still desperate for money, Sting was taking modeling gigs in print and for television commercials to help pay the bills. The bleached-blond hair that would become a trademark of the band was a lucky accident, originating in February 1978 . They were asked to do a commercial for Wrigley's Spearmint chewing gum on the condition that they dye their hair blond. Whether the commercial ever aired or not is unclear; an actual copy of it has never surfaced to date.

First three albums (1978–1980)

The Police began working on their first album, Outlandos d'Amour in early 1978 at Surrey Sound Studios . Stewart Copeland 's older brother Miles Copeland III heard " Roxanne " and for the first time became excited about Stewart's band, and immediately got them a record deal with A&M Records . The album was released in November 1978 and was initially a flop, due to low exposure and an unfavorable reaction from the BBC to its first two singles, " Can't Stand Losing You " and " Roxanne ". However, the band's low-budget tour of America in support of the album made people across the country aware of the band, and especially " Roxanne ". The song received more and more airplay from radio DJs in both the United States and Great Britain through April 1979 . When A&M re-released "Roxanne", it went to #12 on the UK charts, and " Can't Stand Losing You " followed, eventually hitting #2. The album itself peaked at #6.

In October 1979 , the group released their second album Reggatta de Blanc (also recorded at Surrey Sound Studios ), which was a major seller throughout Europe. The album topped the British charts for four weeks and spawned the UK number-one singles " Message in a Bottle " and " Walking on the Moon ". The instrumental title track won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

In March 1980 , the Police did their first world tour; the band played such areas as Mexico City, Mexico; Bombay, India; and Egypt, which seldom hosted foreign performers. The tour provided great photo-opportunities for the band which helped drive their success and turn them into "teen idols", with many of the photos showing up in their official fan magazine, The Police Official File . In May, A&M in Great Britain released " Six Pack " an expensive package containing the five previous A&M singles (not including " Fall Out ") in their original sleeves plus a mono alternate take of the popular album track (from Reggatta de Blanc ) " The Bed's Too Big Without You " backed with a live version of the Outlandos d'Amour track " Truth Hits Everybody ." It reached #17 in the U.K. singles chart, although chart regulations introduced later in the decade would have classed it as an album.

Pressured by their record company for a new record and a prompt return to touring, the Police released their third album, Zenyatta Mondatta , in the autumn of 1980 after frenzied recording sessions at Wisseloord Studios that summer. The album gave the group their third U.K. #1 hit, " Don't Stand So Close To Me ", and " De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da ", which charted in the United States. In subsequent interviews, Sting said he regretted the rushed recording for the album. However, many critics would later cite it as one of their strongest efforts. The instrumental " Behind My Camel ," written by Andy Summers , won the band a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. The song " Don't Stand So Close To Me " won the Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance For Duo Or Group.

International stardom (1980–1983)

Buoyed by the success of the band and his status as the band's most prominent "face", Sting was becoming a major star, and he started trying to establish a career beyond The Police by branching out into acting. He had made a well-received debut as the 'Ace Face' in 1979 's Quadrophenia , followed by a role as a mechanic in love with Eddie Cochran's music in Chris Petit's Radio On . Tensions within the band, however, were increasing, stressed by the pressures of worldwide publicity and fame, creative differences, conflicting egos, and the band's financial success.

The Police 's fourth album, Ghost In The Machine was co-produced by Hugh Padgham and recorded at George Martin's AIR Studios on Montserrat, in an attempt to get away from meddling record company pressure and interruption. It was released in October of 1981 . The album featured a different, thicker sound than their previous works, with layered horns, synthesizers, and vocal textures. It spawned the hit singles " Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic ", " Invisible Sun ", and " Spirits In The Material World ". As the band were unable to agree on a cover picture, the album cover had three red pictographs, "digital" likenesses of the three band members in the style of segmented LED displays, set against a black background.

The group took a sabbatical in 1982, with Sting pursuing his acting career, co-starring with Denholm Elliot and Joan Plowright in the Richard Loncraine film version of Dennis Potter's play Brimstone and Treacle . He also had a minor solo hit in the United Kingdom with the movie's theme song, " Spread A Little Happiness " (which appeared on the Brimstone and Treacle soundtrack, along with three new Police tracks). Summers recorded his first album with Robert Fripp , I Advance Masked .

The Police released their fifth album, Synchronicity , in 1983 after another recording session at AIR Studios . Notable songs from that album include " Every Breath You Take ", " Wrapped Around Your Finger ", " King of Pain " and " Synchronicity II ". The Synchronicity Tour began in Chicago, Illinois in July 1983 at the original Comiskey Park , and ended in Melbourne, Australia in March 1984 at the Melbourne Showgrounds. The event featured five bands, including Simple Minds, Flock of Seagulls, The Fixx, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, with The Police topping the bill.

Except for " King of Pain ", the singles were accompanied by music videos directed by Godley & Creme . This album hit #1 in both the U.K. (where it debuted at #1) and the U.S. It stayed at #1 in the U.K. for only two weeks and in the U.S. for 17 weeks. It was nominated for the Album of the Year Grammy, but lost to Michael Jackson's Thriller . The Police beat out Jackson in one category: " Every Breath You Take " won the Grammy for Song Of The Year, beating Jackson's "Billie Jean". " Every Breath You Take " also won the Grammy for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal while " Synchronicity II " won the Grammy for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. " Every Breath You Take " also won the American Video Award for Best Group video and nabbed two Ivor Novello Awards for the categories Best Song Musically & Lyrically and Most Performed Work.

In 1982 - 1983 , Stewart Copeland composed the musical score for Rumble Fish , a film directed and produced by Francis Ford Coppola from the S.E. Hinton novel. A song released to radio on A&M Records " Don't Box Me In ", a collaboration between Copeland and singer/songwriter Stan Ridgway , received significant airplay upon release of the film that year.

Break-up or not? (1984–1986)

After the Synchronicity tour ended in March 1984 , the group disbanded, although under pressure from their management and record company they never officially announced that they had broken-up. Each band member, however, went on to pursue his own solo career and projects. In 1984 , Andy Summers released a second album with Robert Fripp entitled " Bewitched ." In 1985 , Sting released a successful solo debut LP, the jazz-influenced The Dream of the Blue Turtles . Stewart Copeland released his video film and soundtrack album " The Rhythmatist ".

In June 1986 , the trio reconvened to play three concerts for the Amnesty International A Conspiracy of Hope Tour . In July of that year, a tense short-lived reunion (which Copeland arrived at with a broken arm thanks to a polo accident) in the studio produced only subdued, over-synthesized re-recordings of " Don't Stand So Close To Me " and " De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da ". The former was released in October 1986 as their final single together in the form of " Don't Stand So Close To Me '86 " and appeared on the compilation Every Breath You Take: The Singles , and made the UK Top 25.

The next twenty years (1987–2006)

Each of the band members continued pursuing their solo careers through the late 1980s - 2000s. Sting continued recording and touring as a solo performer to great success. Andy Summers also recorded many albums, from the more experimental rock sound of 1996 's " Synaesthesia " to more traditional jazz as featured on 2000 's " Peggy's Blue Skylight ". Stewart Copeland became a prolific producer of movie and television soundtracks, as well as work for opera and symphony. He also recorded and toured with two new bands, Animal Logic and Oysterhead .

Several events did bring The Police members back together, albeit briefly. In 1992 , Sting wed his long-time companion Trudie Styler . Summers and Copeland were invited to the ceremony and reception. Aware that all band members were present, the wedding guests pressured the trio into playing, and they ultimately performed " Roxanne " and " Message In A Bottle ". Also in 1992 , Andy Summers served a brief stint as Musical Director on the short-lived " Dennis Miller Show ". On 2003-03-10 , The Police were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and performed " Roxanne ", " Message In A Bottle ," and " Every Breath You Take " live, as a group. That autumn Sting released his autobiography, Broken Music , which focused on his early life up through the beginnings of The Police .

In 2004 , Henry Padovani released an album with the participation of Stewart Copeland and Sting in one track, reuniting the "original" Police members in a performance for the first time since 1977 . In 2006 , Stewart Copeland made a rockumentary about the band called Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out , based on Super-8 filming he did when the band was touring and recording in the late 1970s and the early 1980s. In October 2006 , Andy Summers released One Train Later , an autobiographical memoir detailing his early career and time with the band.

The reunion tour (2007–2008)

For decades, the question debated by many fans was if the band would ever reunite for a new album and/or tour. Rumors that such might actually be in the works began surfacing near the end of 2006 /early 2007 on fan messageboards such as Ask Uncle Ian . The timing seemed right, as the band would celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2007 , but many remained deeply skeptical that much would be done beyond re-releasing their old catalog and some other kinds of marketing.

On 2007-01-22 , the punk wave magazine "Side-Line" broke the story that The Police would reunite for the Grammys, adding that the song performed would be " Roxanne ". [1] "Side-Line" also announced in its news coverage that The Police were to embark on a massive tour bringing them to cities all over the world. The band opened the 49th Annual Grammy Awards on 2007-02-11 in Los Angeles, California, announcing "We're The Police. And we're back!" before launching into " Roxanne ." The reunion tour was officially announced the next morning, 2007-02-12 , at a press conference broadcast live on television and the internet from the Whisky A Go Go . Besides answering questions, the band performed 4 songs that morning to an audience of reporters, friends, and lucky fans who had won passes to the event.

They opened their Reunion Tour in Vancouver on 2007-05-28 in front of 32,000 fans at one of two nearly sold-out concerts. Henry Padovani joined the band on stage for the final encore of their show in Paris on 2007-09-29 . The Police as a 4-piece band played "Next to You" from the band's first album Outlandos d'Amour. In October 2007 , the group played the largest gig of the reunion tour in Dublin, Ireland, in front of 82,000 fans. They continued their reunion tour in 2008 , and locations included New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Macau, Japan, Canada, US, France, Germany, Norway, Denmark, UK, Serbia, Poland, Argentina and Brazil, where they played for 75,000 people. Several large festivals were included in the tour as well such as the Isle of Wight Festival and Hard Rock Calling.

In February 2008 , the band announced that once they were finished touring, they would break up again. According to Sting, "There will be no new album, no big new tour, once we're done with our reunion tour, that's it for the Police." [2]

The final show of the tour was held 2008-08-07 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The group earlier announced the show while donating $1 million to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's initiative to plant one million trees in the city by 2017 . [3] Proceeds went towards arts programming for the city's two public television stations. During the entire tour they sold 3.7 million tickets and grossed $358 million, making it the third highest grossing tour of all time. The Police and the store Best Buy announced 2008-08-04 that they would release a collector's set entitled " Certifiable ". The set includes an entire concert recorded live in Buenos Aires, Argentina on the tour and was issued in the following packages: 2DVD/2CD, 1 Blu-Ray Disc/2CD, and 3 premium 180-gram vinyl LPs with MP3 file key. The set also includes bonus footage, including a documentary shot by Stewart's son Jordan entitled " Better Than Therapy ". The set was released on 2008-11-11 at Best Buy.

Community turns out in droves for JSO's Police concert

May 19—JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — Leading up to Saturday's "The Music of The Police" concert by the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, Michael Yuhas said his family had been listening to the rock band's music a lot.

His 7-year-old son Christopher said he was looking forward to hearing the group's hit "Message in a Bottle," which luckily for him the JSO and accompanying band Jeans 'n Classics opened with at 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial.

Yuhas said he and his wife enjoy bringing their children to the symphony, especially because of the family-friendly atmosphere.

"The kids really enjoy music," he said. "They really enjoy live music, so this seemed like a good opportunity."

Stephanie Yuhas, his wife, added that the combination of classical instruments and music of The Police "sounded like a really great show" as well.

The concept of combining these drastically different styles of music was the reason several people bought tickets to the show.

That includes Kerry Wingard, of Sidman, who attended with his mother, June, and sister, Dana Himes.

"I'm sure the music is going to be pretty good," Wingard said.

Saturday was his first time attending a JSO concert and he was excited to see the performance, especially because it was his birthday.

His mother said she's attended symphony shows and enjoyed them while Himes said she is a fan and appreciates Music Director James Blachly's expansive approach.

"This is going to be an interesting concert,"John Rogers said. "Talk about variety."

He attended the event to support his wife, Annis, who had played violin for the Johnstown symphony for the past 50 years.

Rogers complimented the group for the growth he's heard first-hand throughout the years and heard his wife practicing for Saturday's show and expected it to be good.

The show was also marked a special moment for the orchestra because it was the largest indoor concert the group has performed in its history, Blachly said.

"Tonight we are making history together," he said.

The music director also thanked the audience of more than 1,500 for attending and promised an enjoyable evening.

Ian Jutsun and Kathryn Rose, of Jeans 'N Classics, provided vocals for the songs Blachly said were "cherry-picked" from The Police and Sting's musical catalogue.

Some of those songs included hits "Walking On the Moon," which included crowd participation, "De Doo Doo Doo, De Da Da Da" and "Every Breath You Take."

Fan partially paralyzed after rock band singer stage dives into crowd

BUFFALO, N.Y. (Gray News) – A fan attending a concert for the punk rock band Trophy Eyes was left partially paralyzed when the singer jumped off the stage and into the crowd.

Bird Piché, 24, suffered a “catastrophic spinal cord injury” at the concert at Mohawk Place in Buffalo, New York, on April 30, according to a GoFundMe page .

Piché and her family told NBC News she has since regained use of her arms and some leg function, but not full use of her hands and toes.

The family said they feared the worst when Piché was rushed to the hospital.

Piché said she clearly remembers Trophy Eyes frontman John Floreani jumping off the stage and into the crowd.

“It was like, his body and my neck,” Piché told NBC News.

While Piché said crowd surfing is a typical part of punk shows, she said she never thought she’d end up in the hospital from a concert.

According to The Independent , Piché underwent “extensive surgery.”

Fortunately, doctors are predicting she’ll have a full recovery.

She has been a fan of Trophy Eyes since 2016.

After realizing how serious Piché's injuries were, Trophy Eyes cut their performance short and frontman Floreani rode with Piché in the ambulance to the hospital.

The band posted on social media that they were “heartbroken” about the accident and urged fans to donate to Piché's GoFundMe page.

Trophy Eyes donated $5,000 to the fundraiser.

As we've been reporting in the Money blog over the last few months, an increasing number of cities are either imposing or increasing the cost of tourist taxes on visitors.

Many say they are preventing damages from overtourism, as well as funding local infrastructure and businesses.

Here are the latest tourist fees for the most popular spots in Europe...

Tourists visiting Venice for the day will have to pay a €5 entry fee to enter the city between the hours of 8.30am and 4pm.

Meanwhile, those staying overnight in Venice are charged a fee between €1 to €5 within the accommodation price for the first five consecutive nights.

People visiting the Spanish city now have to pay €3.25 if they're staying in official accommodation, up from €2.75.

Manchester

Visitors must pay £1 per room, per night across 73 hotels.

The scheme, which has raised more than £2m within a year, is for improvements to attract more tourists.

Tourists must pay €2 per person for every night they stay, although this is only applied for a maximum of seven nights.

The Greek government has introduced a Climate Crisis Resilience Fee to charge tourists anywhere from €0.50 to €10 per room, per night.

The amount depends on the hotel category and the time of year.

Visitors to the Croatian city must pay €2.65 per person, per night throughout April to September.

However, the fee has been temporarily reduced to €1.86 for the rest of this year.

Different amounts are charged depending on the type of accommodation.

The most expensive charge is €14.95 for a stay in palaces, and €0.65 at one or two-star campsites, per person, per night.

Those staying in a typical four-star hotel are charged around €8.

Those staying in the Hungarian capital are charged an additional 4% each night, which is calculated based on the price of the room.

Tourists in Berlin must pay 5% of the room price, excluding VAT and service fees.

The tourist tax here has increased from €0.82 to €1.97 per day.

Estate agent fees are one of the big expenses in selling a house - but rule changes and the rise of private sale websites have made it more common for people to go it alone.

But how easy is it - and what do you need to know? We spoke to industry experts to find out.

Firstly, what do estate agents do for their money?

An estate agent will typically charge in the range of 1%-3.5% of the sale price.

That means for the average house price (£284,691 from December) you could pay anywhere from £2,846 to £9,964 in commission fees.

"When you use an estate agent, their fee includes taking professional photographs, advertising your home, conducting property viewings, and negotiating a price on your behalf," says Jack Smithson  from the home ownership site  Better.co.uk .

In addition, an estate agent will compile comprehensive details of your house, including room sizes and descriptions of fixtures and fittings.

"They will also provide a concise write-up about the local area, highlighting amenities, schools, and transportation links," Jack adds.

And they'll conduct checks on buyers for you (more on this later).

It sounds like a lot, but...

"Selling your home yourself can be a manageable process with a few key steps," Jack says.

Preparation

You should begin by thoroughly researching house prices in your area, using websites like Rightmove and Zoopla - but seek free valuations from local estate agents to ensure you have a realistic asking price in mind.

Next, you want to take high-quality photos of your house.

Jack advises using tutorials on YouTube to learn new shooting and editing techniques that can take you to the next level.

You then want to write down what makes your home unique.

"While browsing other listings for inspiration, take it a step further by emphasising what you love about living in your home and the surrounding area," Jack suggests.

"Whether it's the refreshing scent of the coastline or the tranquil sounds of village life, incorporating these details can help potential buyers visualise living there," he advises.

Like using YouTube for photography tips, you can use free tools such as ChatGPT and Grammarly if you need help with your writing, Jack says.

Advertising

This is probably the biggest perk of going through an established estate agent - your home is much more likely to be viewed because they will have an established audience and a market. But it's very possible to do it alone.

"When it comes to advertising your home, explore a variety of avenues including local newspapers and social media," Jack says.

"Consider using websites like Strike, which allow individuals to list their properties for free on platforms like Rightmove," he suggests.

Viewings

Once you've secured some viewings, you've got the opportunity to make it a bit more personal than estate agents ever could - a real advantage.

"Explain the reasons behind your decision to purchase the property, highlight its unique features, and share the aspects of your neighbourhood that make it a desirable place to live," Jack says.

The small things matter when showing people round - so try to take an objective look around before you bring anyone in.

Do the things you'd do normally - make sure it smells nice and it's clean and tidy.

"Lastly, it's worth knowing that you must legally provide potential buyers with a free Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)."

The sale itself

Perhaps the most daunting aspect is the physical exchange of contracts and money.

An estate agent would typically oversee the process of the initial offer acceptance to the transfer of keys to the new owner.

However, if you go it alone, you'll need to become the central point of contact - bridging the gap between your solicitor or conveyancer and the buyer and their legal representative.

"Once you've accepted an offer on your property, your first task is to draft what's called a memorandum of sale," Jack says.

This document is a written confirmation of your acceptance of the offer and details the agreed price along with any specific conditions you've both agreed to.

"It's then recommended to engage the services of a solicitor or conveyancer to ensure all legal obligations are met," Jack says (of course, you'll need to do this even if you have an estate agent).

The cost of hiring one typically ranges from a few hundred to over £1,000, depending on factors such as fixed fees, hourly rates, the complexity of the sale and additional costs like property searches or land registry fees.

"In the absence of an estate agent, you'll be responsible for keeping your buyer informed about the progress of the sale. This involves regular updates on the status of legal procedures and any relevant developments," Jack says, before adding that this can actually be a good thing.

"By taking on these responsibilities independently, you'll have greater control over the sale process. However, it will require you to be exceptionally organised, and you'll need to be very good at communicating too."

Any risks to be aware of?

Rita Patel, legal director at law firm  Browne Jacobson , tells us the biggest risk for people selling their properties without an estate agent is the lack of a vetting and verification process of the potential buyer.

Estate agents will verify the buyer's identity and check the buyer's proof and source of funds - without this, there's no way to assess the buyer is legitimate and can afford to buy.

"Whilst this process is something lawyers can help with, this is often at an additional cost, and you'll need to start from square one if there is an issue with a potential buyer's identification and/or financial eligibility," Rita says.

More generally, selling without an agent can extend the time it takes to sell.

"Zoopla suggests this timeframe is normally around 17-34 weeks, but with no one on hand to consistently promote and drive the property sale at all stages, going solo drags this process out," Rita says.

"Agents can also help mediate any potential breakdowns in communication between the buyer and seller - reducing the likelihood of having to go back to market and start again."

The advantages

Laura Owen-Brown, a PR manager from Gloucestershire, tells us she is set to sell her house without an estate agent in the near future.

"My disappointment with estate agents stems from their lack of familiarity with the properties they attempted to sell me when I was buying my current house," she says.

"They couldn't tell me about the details that truly matter, like the optimal times for sunlight in the garden, how much council tax I'd pay, what the roof was made of, the places I could walk my dog off lead or the impact of post-football match traffic on Sundays.

"These types of details can shape the experience of living in a house for years and are just as important as the square footage, EPC rating or how many bedrooms a property has," she adds.

She says the current "transactional" approach to selling houses feels "impersonal and outdated" to her.

"Yes, I'll have to handle more admin, but the savings in both money and time will make it worthwhile. Liaising with buyers and solicitors directly without a third party slowing everything down will mean I can be in control and have transparency throughout the process, especially during negotiations," she says.

All in all...

As Laura says, it's very much a case of whether you can stomach the admin and are happy to take the risks on background financial checks.

If you are aware of all the above and willing to take on the organisational burden, you could save yourself a serious chunk of cash.

The main topics from the Money blog that got you commenting this week were...

Government-funded childcare

  • Michel Roux Jr's comments about the future of the restaurant industry

Nearly 600 new skyscrapers for London

From last Sunday, eligible working parents of children from nine-months-old in England have been able to register for access to up to 15 free hours of government-funded childcare per week.

Those hours can be claimed from September.

Some readers pointed out the T&Cs...

This 15 hrs a week is for term time ONLY. So full-time working parents will have to either tell their employer they can't work in school holidays or pro-rata it across the year which is 10 hours a week. Yvonne grandma

Others said it spoke to issues in the wider childcare sector...

Is the government going to give pay rises to nursery staff? They are very low paid staff, and can't get enough staff as it is!! Nurseries may have to close if they don't get staff, so parents won't be able to take up the offer!! What is the government going to do about it? Carol

Chefs or delivery drivers?

Celebrity chef Michel Roux Jr has suggested that restaurants may only open three days per week because young people prefer other jobs - like delivering parcels.

"Just because I worked 80 hours a week or more doesn't mean the next generation should," he said.

"Quite the contrary. That is something that we have to address in our industry."

Readers said...

That's because one [job] is on the verge of slave labour and one definitely is slave labour. And the latter I'm referring to is working in a kitchen for a chef.  Realist2024
Spent 35 years working as a chef. Young people nowadays are not willing to do the extra hours (usually unpaid) and work every weekend. Godsends like my generation of chefs did and do.  Bucks

There's been considerable backlash in our comments section after a thinktank said a total of 583 skyscrapers are "queuing up in the pipeline" to be built across central London.

That is more than double the 270 built in the past decade...

"600 new skyscrapers on way for London" while the majority are struggling. When will something serious be done about growing wealth inequality in the UK? A growing economy is useless while the gap between the ultra rich and everyone else increases. Qwerty1
How many unnecessary skyscrapers for London? It's fine, as long as they are not made using steel, glass, concrete or bricks - don't people know there's a climate emergency? Shanghaiwan

The energy price cap is set to fall by about 7% in July, a respected energy markets researcher has said.

Ahead of next Friday's announcement by Ofgem for the July-September period, Cornwall Insights said: "For a typical dual fuel household, we predict the July price cap to be £1,574 per annum" - a drop from £1,690.

Looking further ahead, it forecasted the cap will rise again slightly in October, before falling in January next year.

"A predicted 7% drop in energy prices in July is clearly good news, with the price cap looking likely to hit its lowest level in over two years," a spokesperson for Uswitch said.

Around 100 more prosecutions of sub-postmasters unrelated to the Horizon scandal could be "tainted" , a Sky News investigation has found, as officials worked with now discredited Post Office investigators to secure convictions.

The prosecutions of Post Office staff were led by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) between 2001 and 2006.

It is understood these usually involved the cashing in of stolen order books.

The Post Office itself wrongly prosecuted hundreds of sub-postmasters between 1999 and 2015 - based on evidence from the faulty Horizon accounting system.

The UK's mega rich are dwindling in a sign Britain's "billionaire boom has come to an end" , according to the latest Sunday Times Rich List.

The list reveals the largest fall in billionaires in the guide's history - from a peak of 177 in 2022 to 165 this year.

While the combined wealth of the list's 350 wealthiest individuals amounts to more than £795bn - larger than the GDP of Poland - the guide's compiler says time will tell what impact a drop in billionaires could have.

"This year's Sunday Times Rich List suggests Britain's billionaire boom has come to an end," Robert Watts said.

The Body Shop’s administrators are to launch an auction of the chain after concluding that an alternative restructuring of one of Britain’s best-known high street retailers was not viable.

Sky News has learnt that FRP Advisory, which has been overseeing the collapsed business since January, is to begin formally sounding out potential buyers in the coming weeks.

The move raises the prospect of new owners taking control of The Body Shop, which was founded nearly half a century ago.

The UK's mega rich are dwindling - in a sign Britain's "billionaire boom has come to an end", according to the latest Sunday Times Rich List.

Published today, the list reveals the largest fall in billionaires in the guide's history - from a peak of 177 in 2022 to 165 this year.

"Many of our home-grown entrepreneurs have seen their fortunes fall and some of the global super rich who came here are moving away."

Top of the list is British-Indian businessman Gopi Hinduja and his family, whose wealth of £37.2bn is the largest fortune in the ranking's history.

But other familiar names in the list saw their riches fall, with Sir Richard Branson's total dropping by £2.4bn, which is back to his 2000 level.

Last year's top climber Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who bought a stake in Manchester United this year, fell two positions with a decline of £6.1bn.

Euan Blair, Tony Blair's eldest son, made the list for the first time, as did Sir Lewis Hamilton.

It comes as the UK continues to deal with a cost-of-living crisis, with new figures this week revealing a record 3.1 million food bank parcels were distributed over the course of a year.

The top 10:

  • Gopi Hinduja - £37.2bn
  • Sir Leonard Blavtanik - £29.2bn
  • David and Simon Reuben and family - £24.9bn
  • Sir Jim Ratcliffe - £23.5bn
  • Sir James Dyson and family - £20.8bn
  • Barnaby and Merlin Swire and family - £17.2bn
  • Idan Ofer - £14.9bn
  • Lakshmi Mittal and family - £14.9bn
  • Guy, George, Alannah and Galen Weston and family - £14.4bn
  • John Fredriksen and family - £12.8bn

A group of social media influencers have been charged in relation to promoting an unauthorised investment scheme.

The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE) original cast member Lauren Goodger, 37, former Love Island star Biggs Chris, 32, and Celebrity Big Brother winner Scott Timlin, 36, also known as Scotty T, are among seven TV personalities alleged to have been paid to promote the scheme to their combined 4.5 million Instagram followers.

The others charged by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) include former Love Islanders Rebecca Gormley, 26, Jamie Clayton, 32, and Eva Zapico, 25 and TOWIE member Yazmin Oukhellou, 30.

The UK's financial watchdog brought the charges in a crackdown on "finfluencers" who use their online platforms to offer advice and information on various financial topics.

It alleges that between 19 May 2018 and 13 April 2021 Emmanuel Nwanze, 30, and Holly Thompson, 33, used an Instagram account to provide advice on buying and selling investments known as contracts for difference (CFDs) when they were not authorised to do so.

The watchdog said CFDs were high-risk investments used to bet on the price of an asset, in this case the price of foreign currencies.

It previously warned that 80% of customers lost money when investing in CDFs.

Mr Nwanze has been charged with running the scheme. He faces one count of breaching the general prohibition of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000, and one count of unauthorised communications of financial promotions.

Ms Thompson, Mr Chris, Mr Clayton, Ms Goodger, Ms Gormley, Ms Oukhellou, Mr Timlin and Ms Zapico each face one count of unauthorised communications of financial promotions.

All nine will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on 13 June.

The FCA asked anyone who believed they had sustained a loss due to the scheme to contact its consumer contact centre.

A hotel part-owned by Gary Neville and other ex-Manchester United legends has been named one of the best places to work in hospitality.

Each year, The Caterer releases its top 30 best places for employees in the sector, with the top six featuring some familiar names.

The list is compiled via anonymous employee survey - with no input from managers or owners.

Hotel Football, the only hotel with a rooftop five-a-side pitch, was among the top six venues selected by employees across the UK.

The hotel's benefits package was particularly well-praised by those who work there - given that it "prioritises the financial wellbeing of employees during the cost of living challenge".

Management at the hotel, which is situated next to Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium, was also praised for enhanced maternity, paternity, parental and adoption leave policies and a strong belief in diversity and inclusion.

The other five to make up the top six are The Biltmore in Mayfair, Cycas Hospitality (which has 18 locations across the UK), Dalata (which boasts some 1,000 employees), Gleneagles Hotel in Edinburgh and Nobu Hotel in Shoreditch, London.

The energy price cap is set to fall by about 7% in July, a leading thinktank has said.

Cornwall Insights said: "For a typical dual fuel household, we predict the July price cap to be £1,574 per annum" - a drop from £1,690.

Looking further ahead, it forecasted the cap to rise again slightly in October, before falling again in January next year.

Reacting to the news, Uswitch said the predicted drop was "clearly good news".

"The future still remains uncertain, and with the price cap changing every three months – currently expected to rise in October before falling slightly in January –  it's crucial not to be complacent," Richard Neudegg, director of regulation, said.

However, "a predicted 7% drop in energy prices in July is clearly good news, with the price cap looking likely to hit its lowest level in over two years", he said.

He also urged  households who want to lock in rates for price certainty to run a comparison to see what energy tariffs are available to them.

"There are many 12-month fixed tariffs available at rates cheaper than the current price cap, and even some that are 2% below these new predicted July rates," he said.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

polica band tour

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

polica band tour

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

polica band tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

polica band tour

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

polica band tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

polica band tour

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

polica band tour

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
