Polica (formed in 2011) is an American indie, synth pop, alternative rock group hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the U.S.

The band is formed of Ryan Olson on production and singer Channy Leaneagh. Leaneagh spawned from a musical family and attended Ramsey Fine Arts School where she learned to dance, play the violin and perform. After graduating from high school Leaneagh met Alexei Casselle who became an acoustic duo and in 2005 married. The pair formed folk-rock duo Roma di Luna and released three independent albums together.

After the professional break up of Roma di Luna and personal break-up of her marriage, Leaneagh was looking for something novel and Ryan Olsen invited her to join his Ganyngs supergroup project alongside Justin Vernon, P.O.S., Har Mar Superstar and members of Megafaun. After which Olsen convinced the singer to experiment with a synth pop, R&B sound and enlisted the help of Chris Bierden on bass and back-up vocals, and Drew Christopherson and Ben Ivascu on drums.

Poliça released their debut album in February 2012 on the label Totally Gross National Product founded by Drew Christopherson and Ryan Olsen. The album features strong manipulation of the singers voice and received positive critical acclaim. The band subsequently played SXSW festival and became known for their intense live-performances across the U.S. and Europe with their funky bass and powerful pair of drummers.

The band followed their debut up with “Shulamith” in 2013, named after the feminist Shulamith Firestone. The album reached No. 33 in the UK Albums charts and its lead single “Tiff” features the experienced voice of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon.

Live reviews

Poliça....is it a Latinate name for the local force, the Spanish bobby? Apparently not. According to the Minneapolis five-piece the name is Polish for “policy”, an unwritten code that the band members live and record by, and it’s certainly done them just fine so far after two albums and a series of much-talked-about live performances. 2012’s Give You the Ghost and 2013’s Shulamith marked Poliça out as a top-notch electronic pop band with more than a hint of recycled trip hop to their remarkable rhythms. Producer and general recluse Ryan Olsen (he refuses to appear live with the band) describes the music as “Drums, bass, synths, me, women” and that’s a pretty fair reflection of what you hear when you see this band live. You’re immediately taken by the stage presence of the elfin Channy Leaneagh, who writhes and dances in front of her banks of synths before unleashing her stunning voice, which is often treated with effects that only make the impact that more powerful. Poliça use two drummers when playing live, and their timing is impeccable; you will never catch Drew Christopherson and Ben Ivascu out of step with each other and this means that tracks like ‘Dark Star’, ‘Lay Your Cards Out’ and the clattering ‘Chain My Name’ become powerful beyond what’s on the record, but never overpowering the captivating Leaneagh. Given Leaneagh’s passion for feminism it’s always worth sticking around for a Polica encore as you’ll hear a cover of Lesley Gore’s ‘You Don’t Own Me’. It’s stunning simply for her naked vocal, reminding you that while you can throw all the instrumentation you like at a live show, the singer will always be the star when she’s got a voice that’ll stop you in your tracks.

Unfortunately the concert was not as good as it has could have been. The sound mixing was horrible with too much und bad basses leaving Channys vocals behind. Herself seemed very shy and stressed out with very little contact to her fans. Badly there were many unknown songs and only little old ones what made the concert not very easy going. The whole gig was far too short, too with only one encore, what left me little disappointing. Hopefully Polica learns more about good live performance in the future as they are very good musicians after all.

Little lady makes big noise at the Roundhouse.

I always worry when a band uses up it's better known numbers by halfway through the concert: are they playing a short set it are they worried about keeping the crowd engaged.

Not a problem last night as this was a confident and sometimes mesmerising performance.

Two big and powerful drummers and a bassist and then Chany. Her voice is unique, even with echo and distortion. It is the songs which provides a jazz feel to some of the numbers and you can see her concetrating on the accuracy of the notes, though she seemed to be having problems with her ear piece.Perhaps a bit more contact with the crowd woukd have helped.

My other gripe is the use of pre recorded tracks. The rhythm was powerful and live but the "tunes" were all backing tracks. I'd have liked a fifth band member, even if they were just pressing buttons on a key board. Seeing no one on stage playing while music was belting out is always disconcerting: not quite live!

But I loved the range of the songs , the pounding rhythms and above all her voice.

I am still within the firm opinion that Poliça are one of the most exciting things to happen to alt-pop music in quite a long time. The debut album 'Give You A Ghost' was a masterclass in moody, dark and downtempo indietronica and quickly gained the band a cult-like following and the esteem deserved from a number of respected publications.

This evening the group is lead onto stage by a bright eyed Channy Leaneagh who comes dressed appropriately all in black. Playing their debut album in its near entirety allows the audience to step inside the twisted world and view every twist, turn and change in these complex synth pop packets. 'Amongster' is equally as brooding as the record version whilst 'I See My Mother' has a wonderfully hypnotic quality. Poliça are undoubtedly an acquired taste due to the complexity of their narratives and the sonar structures of their music yet for those who invest the time, the rewards are staggering.

Poliça far succeeded my expectations! At the start of their set they placed several songs from United Crushers. Maybe its due to not listening to the newest album enough, but it these songs did not seem to flow as well with me as I know their previous albums do. However, they looked quite in sync with what they were playing in terms of enjoyment. Then they switched to their old content... And it was magical! The music pulsed the room, Channy Leaneagh vocals were so on point, and the change in sound from new to old felt so much more natural. "Very Cruel" was explosive and spiritual. By the end, when they played a couple more songs from United Crushers, I was completely sold this new record. The lighting game was also perfect!

We saw Polica performing the final show of their United Crushers spring US tour at The Bottleneck in Lawrence,KS. Chaney was great and the band was exceptional. They had limited conversation with crowd during a 1 1/2 hour long set, but their music was very tight and well received by about 150 fans that were clearly very well versed in Polica's work.

The encore consisted of two songs including a great version of "Chain My Name" that had the crowd moving. They performed a mix of songs from their 3 albums.

Ok so the concert was good. Polica were on form, haunting music delivered with a new line up of musicians that played an array of different instruments very well. Channy was mesmeric. However Give You the Ghost was by far their best album and so it was a disappointment not to hear any of the tracks from that album, shame really because their collaboration with Stargaze is a way forward for them musically but please do not forget your roots and what you managed to produce on your own.

"Lime Habit" was performed with passion and style- as were the other tunes, but the best part was watching the dual drum sets! Most all their songs, except Lime Habit, began rather slow, yet the direction was clear and each one ended with solid vibes- just making you want more. A band going places for sure. Opening band was MOTHXR - another band who is able to creatively blend the dark side with solid rhythm: think " Stranger". Would love to see both bands again!!

She looks weird with that blonde hair. Why? you looked so beautiful with your dark hair before, going blonde is sooooooooooooo mainstream!

anyway, you're music is awesome, your live performances are great and I only hope some day you'll be allowed to play in Berghain Panorama bar, because you deserve the best possible sound on earth.

Police explain how to spot counterfeit money that has been circulating the area

QUINCY (WGEM) - Quincy Police are urging everyone to keep an eye on the money in your wallet. Quincy Police warn that counterfeit $100 bills are circulating.

QPD Pro-Act Assistant Deb Beebe said the bills were found in Quincy as well as Missouri. QPD Chief Adam Yates said they received reports of people passing the bills around the area. Beebe said these counterfeit bills are difficult to notice.

“Initially you cannot tell because they do the pen test and they pass, and the only way to really tell is they will peel apart or they are just a slightly different size,” Beebe said.

Yates said a lot of times counterfeiters will wash $20 or $1 bills and reprint them as $100 bills to get around the test. He said the pen test is where retailors mark a bill with a pen, and if it leaves a mark, it is a fake.

Beebe said another way you can check to see if they are fake is checking the serial numbers.

Yates said it is important people are aware of fake bills going around so they can avoid loss.

“If someone happens to get a counterfeit $100 bill during a transaction and then goes to make another transaction, gives that $100 bill and it’s determined to be fake, now they are out a $100. So, what we want to do is try to, on the front end prevent anyone from being taken advantage of course on the backend we would like to figure out who’s circulating these bills and hold them accountable,” Yates said.

He said it’s a felony to knowingly use counterfeit money in the state of Illinois. However, if you unknowingly use it there is no penalty, but it means you can be out money if it’s discovered. Victims won’t get compensated by a bank if they deposited it unknowingly or used it for purchase. Yates urges people to report if they have any counterfeit money that way, they can find the suspect and they can get the victim compensated via restitution

Some of the serial numbers they’ve found on the counterfeit bills so far include:

HL62546631G

HL62256314G

HL62566311G

If you think you’ve found a counterfeit bill you can call QPD at (217) 228-4470

MOSCOW (AP) — Assailants burst into a large concert hall in Moscow on Friday and sprayed the crowd with gunfire, killing over 60 people, injuring more than 100 and setting fire to the venue in a brazen attack just days after President Vladimir Putin cemented his grip on power in a highly orchestrated electoral landslide.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on affiliated channels on social media. A U.S. intelligence official told The Associated Press that U.S. intelligence agencies had learned the group’s branch in Afghanistan was planning an attack in Moscow and shared the information with Russian officials.

It wasn’t immediately clear what happened to the attackers after the raid, which state investigators were investigating as terrorism.

The attack, which left the concert hall in flames with a collapsing roof, was the deadliest in Russia in years and came as the country’s war in Ukraine dragged into a third year. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin called the raid a “huge tragedy.”

The Kremlin said Putin was informed minutes after the assailants burst into Crocus City Hall, a large music venue on Moscow’s western edge that can accommodate 6,200 people.

The attack took place as crowds gathered for a performance by the Russian rock band Picnic. The Investigative Committee, the top state criminal investigation agency, reported early Saturday that more than 60 people were killed. Health authorities released a list of 145 injured — 115 of them hospitalized, including five children.

Some Russian news reports suggested more victims could have been trapped by the blaze that erupted after the assailants threw explosives.

Video showed the building on fire, with a huge cloud of smoke rising through the night sky. The street was lit up by the blinking blue lights of dozens of firetrucks, ambulances and other emergency vehicles, as fire helicopters buzzed overhead to dump water on the blaze that took hours to contain.

The prosecutor’s office said several men in combat fatigues entered the concert hall and fired on concertgoers.

Dave Primov, who was in the hall during the attack, described panic and chaos when the attack began.

“There were volleys of gunfire,” Primov told the AP. “We all got up and tried to move toward the aisles. People began to panic, started to run and collided with each other. Some fell down and others trampled on them.”

Videos posted by Russian media and on messaging app channels showed men toting assault rifles shooting screaming people at point-blank range. One video showed a man in the auditorium saying the assailants had set it on fire, as gunshots rang out incessantly.

Guards at the concert hall didn’t have guns, and some could have been killed at the start of the attack, Russian media reported. Some Russian news outlets suggested the assailants fled before special forces and riot police arrived. Reports said police patrols were looking for several vehicles the attackers could have used to escape.

In a statement posted by its Aamaq news agency, the Islamic State group said it attacked a large gathering of “Christians” in Krasnogorsk on Moscow’s outskirts, killing and wounding hundreds. It was not immediately possible to verify the authenticity of the claim.

However, U.S. intelligence officials confirmed the claim by the Islamic State group’s branch based in Afghanistan that it was responsible for the Moscow attack, a U.S. official told the AP.

The official said U.S. intelligence agencies had gathered information in recent weeks that the IS branch was planning an attack in Moscow. He said U.S. officials privately shared the intelligence earlier this month with Russian officials. The official was briefed on the matter but was not authorized to publicly discuss the intelligence information and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Noting that the IS statement cast its claim as an attack targeting Christians, Aymenn Jawad al-Tamimi, an expert on the terrorist group, said it appeared to reflect the group’s strategy of “striking wherever they can as part of a global ‘fight the infidels and apostates everywhere.’”

In October 2015, a bomb planted by IS downed a Russian passenger plane over Sinai, killing all 224 people on board, most of them Russian vacation-goers returning from Egypt. The group, which operates mainly in Syria and Iraq but also in Afghanistan and Africa, also has claimed several attacks in Russia’s volatile Caucasus and other regions in the past years. It recruited fighters from Russia and other parts of former Soviet Union.

On March 7, Russia’s top security agency said it thwarted an attack on a synagogue in Moscow by an Islamic State cell, killing several of its members in the Kaluga region near the Russian capital. A few days earlier, Russian authorities said six alleged IS members were killed in a shootout in Ingushetia in Russia’s Caucasus region.

On Friday, statements of outrage, shock and support for those affected by the concert call attack streamed in from around the world.

Some commentators on Russian social media questioned how authorities, who relentlessly surveil and pressure Kremlin critics, failed to identify the threat and prevent the attack.

Russian officials said security was tightened at Moscow’s airports, railway stations and the capital’s sprawling subway system. Moscow’s mayor canceled all mass gatherings, and theaters and museums shut for the weekend. Other Russian regions also tightened security.

The Kremlin didn’t immediately blame anyone for the attack, but some Russian lawmakers were quick to accuse Ukraine and called for ramping up strikes. Hours before the attack, the Russian military l aunched a sweeping barrage on Ukraine’s power system, crippling the country’s biggest hydroelectric plant and other energy facilities and leaving more than a million people without electricity.

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, said that if Ukraine involvement was proven, all those involved “must be tracked down and killed without mercy, including officials of the state that committed such outrage.”

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, denied Ukraine involvement.

“Ukraine has never resorted to the use of terrorist methods,” he posted on X. “Everything in this war will be decided only on the battlefield.”

John Kirby, spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said he couldn’t yet speak about the details but “the images are just horrible. And just hard to watch.”

Friday’s attack followed a statement earlier this month by the U.S. Embassy in Moscow that urged Americans to avoid crowded places in view of “imminent” plans by extremists to target large gatherings in the Russian capital, including concerts. The warning was repeated by several other Western embassies.

National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said Friday the U.S. government had information about a planned attack in Moscow, prompting the State Department advisory to Americans. The U.S. government shared the information with Russian authorities in accordance with its longstanding “duty to warn” policy, Watson said.

Putin, who extended his grip on Russia for another six years in this week’s presidential vote after a sweeping crackdown on dissent, denounced the Western warnings as an attempt to intimidate Russians. “All that resembles open blackmail and an attempt to frighten and destabilize our society,” he said earlier this week.

Russia was shaken by a series of deadly terror attacks in the early 2000s during the fighting with separatists in the Russian province of Chechnya.

In October 2002, Chechen militants took about 800 people hostage at a Moscow theater. Two days later, Russian special forces stormed the building and 129 hostages and 41 Chechen fighters died, most from effects of narcotic gas Russian forces use to subdue the attackers.

In September 2004, about 30 Chechen militants seized a school in Beslan in southern Russia taking hundreds of hostages. The siege ended in a bloodbath two days later and more than 330 people, about half of them children, were killed.

Associate Press writer Michael Balsamo in Washington contributed to this report.

This story was updated to correct that John Kirby is a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, not the White House national security adviser.

Taylor Swift performing in Edinburgh

A 64-year-old man has been charged with alleged voyeurism at one of Taylor Swift ’s UK Eras Tour dates .

Police Scotland said the suspect was arrested and charged in connection with a voyeurism incident during the concert at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh on June 8.

Superintendent David Happs stated: ‘A 64-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with a voyeurism offence committed within Murrayfield during the event on Saturday June 8.

‘He was released on an undertaking to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court at a later date.’

Police Scotland also told Metro.co.uk that the suspect, born in 1960, is a man named Andrew Hunter.

According to UK law, voyeurism is the act of gaining sexual ggratification through watching or recording someone in a private act. For it to be a legal offence, it must be non-consensual.

Both the Sexual Offences Act 2003 and Voyeurism Offences Act 2019 label voyeurism as a crime

Swift kicked off her UK leg of the Eras tour with three consecutive dates at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.

The stadium was at max capacity with 73,000 fans, making the gigs the highest-attended stadium concerts in Scottish history.

This news comes shortly after Taylor shared a grateful message with her Scottish fans after the three sold-out nights.

The Eras Tour crowd at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.

She captioned photos from the shows: ‘Edinburgh!!! You truly blew me away this weekend.

‘Thank you for breaking the all-time attendance record for a stadium show in Scotland 3 times in a row and for all the ways you made us feel right at home. Love you, all 220,000 of you!!!’

The performances were the first of 15 dates of the tour that will take place in the UK.

Swift will take the stage in Edinburgh,  Cardiff ,  London , and Liverpool in coming weeks and is sure to draw enormous crowds at each stop along the way.

The concert began at 8pm and fans went wild as the Shake It Off singer embarked on her retrospective performance of her discography.

But the alleged voyeur wasn’t the only bump in the road in Edinburgh.

While performing Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve from the Midnights album, the superstar stopped singing when she released one of her fans needed emergency help.

Social media footage showed Swift saying: ‘Need help right in front of me, right in front of me please.

Taylor Swift

‘She’s right in front of me, just gonna keep playing until we notice where it is, right, right there. I’m just gonna keep playing ’til somebody helps them, then I’m going to keep singing the song.’

‘I don’t think anybody’s seen them yet and they’re gonna, because we’re not gonna keep singing, we’re just gonna keep talking about the people that need help in front of me. Just let me know when – I can do this all night!’

Eventually, the audience member was helped by staff and the singer said: ‘OK, you’re good? AWESOME!’ Before jumping right back into the song.

For now, the details of the voyeurism incident remain unclear, but one thing is for sure: if there’s any fandom you don’t want to mess with, it’s the Swifties .
