HALI’IMAILE DISTILLERY TOUR

Whale watch & pineapple tour combo, the sweetest pineapple in the world is grown on maui.

Nothing is as synonymous with the Hawaiian landscape and culture as the pineapple. At Maui Pineapple Tour, our passion is to share the history, culture, and hard work that goes into producing this iconic fruit.

Nestled in the tiny farm town of Haliʻimaile in beautiful upcountry Maui, the tour begins in an air-conditioned vehicle that transports you into the pineapple fields. While traveling through, knowledgeable guides explain pineapple planting and harvesting techniques and show how farm workers still cultivate the fruit by hand. Our pineapple was made famous by its extra sweet flavor and can’t be found anywhere else in the world.  Nothing tastes sweeter than a hand-picked, machete-cut pineapple straight from the fields.

Maui Pineapple Tours

pineapple plantation tour maui

$75.00 per Adult, $65.00 per Child (3-12) (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

Pineapple is a universally recognized symbol of hospitality and Maui is the world's premier pineapple growing region. Maui Gold pineapples are "born and raised" on Maui ... they are extra-sweet and loaded with three times the Vitamin C of traditional pineapples.

Maui Gold and Haliimaile Pineapple Company offer a pineapple plantation tour that is the only one of its kind in the entire nation. This 1.5 - 2 hour tour is led by pineapple workers whose colorful commentary weaves history, facts and trivia into an authentic pineapple plantation experience.

Not only do you get to see and taste pineapples growing in the fields, you also get to see the inside of the packing facility at Haliimaile! Tour participants check in and park at the Hali'imaile Distilling Company ( 883 Hali'imaile Road, Hali'imaile, HI 96768) just south of the upcountry town of Makawao. The distillery is located directly across the street from the Hali'imaile General Store. From there you will be transported in the Maui Gold tour vehicle to working pineapple fields in central Maui. Your guide will explain the pineapple growing process, and cut pineapples right from the fields for you to taste the varying stages. You'll learn first-hand why field-ripened pineapple are so much better than most of the ones you find at your grocery store back home.

The tour continues with a walk-through look at the unique packing and shipping factory at Haliimaile. All tour participants receive a one free pineapple, all boxed up for you to take home! Additional pineapples and boxes are available for purchase.

The Pineapple Tour is held daily except Sundays at 9:30am, 11:45am, and 1:45pm.

Closed toed shoes are recommended. This tour is not advised for anyone with significant neck or back issues as the tour vehicle drives on unpaved and bumpy agricultural roads. Minimum age for children is 2 years. Participants must sign a waiver of risk prior to participation in these tours.

Cruise Ship Clients

Ship icon

NCL cruise ship passengers in Kahului are able to do the pineapple tour either day in port. Transportation is not included, and is most economically done by renting a car. We can arrange a rental car with shuttle pick-up at the harbor; rates vary throughout the year but start around $40 per day in low season; see our rental car page for more information. Drive time is approx. 20 minutes.

Lahaina cruise ship passengers can do the pineapple tour but a rental car is required. Drive time is about an hour and 10 minutes.

ACTIVITY TIPS

Kevin at Falls

If you've never tasted field ripened pineapple cut open and served fresh while it's still in the field, you've never REALLY tasted pineapple! This experience will make you want to go home and picket the produce department of your local grocery store for having the audacity to sell those flavorless pineapples produced in other parts of the world. Really ... there is no comparison. Maui Gold pineapple is the best, and you are likely to want to take some of these babies home with you. Hint: you can pack up a box and ship it home on the airplane as a piece of checked luggage.

I absolutely love pineapples! They're my favorite fruit. When I saw that I could visit a real pineapple farm, I jumped at the chance! The tour is even better than I expected. Our tour guide was Shilo and he was fantastic! He was full of knowledge, and also very funny. He was kind enough to make an extra stop so we could photograph a rainbow, and he even shared some of his tricks for capturing the best photos of the young pineapples as they bloom. In addition to learning nearly everything I could hope to know about pineapples, but more specifically Maui Gold pineapples (and why they are so special!), we sampled a variety of pineapples at different stages of growth to compare the more acidic and sweeter ones. As part of the tour, each participant also receives a boxed pineapple to take home. If you love pineapple, then this tour is such a unique and worthwhile experience during a trip to Maui. I highly recommend it!

Came on the tour with some friends. This experience was absolutely great! From the moment you check in you get assigned into a tour bus and Rudy takes it from there! He takes pride and sharing the history of Maui gold pineapple plantation and he knows everything that goes on. He shared the process to plant, harvest, Sanitation process and how it ends up on the shelf. The experience is very beautiful. They even take pictures of families on the tour and email them to you for free for a keepsake. You also get a free pineapple on your way out. Definitely worth a trip.

If you're obsessed with pineapples like I am, this tour is for you. It's kinda like a museum tour where they go over the history and facts except you also get to touch the products! They had a little store you can browse while you wait for your tour. Then they get you on a mini school bus to start the tour. The whole tour was about 1.5 hours and didn't require much walking. They drove us through the pineapple fields and explained the different types of equipment. We then reached a little sitting area in the middle of the field with gorgeous views to learn more about pineapples and try and few slices. Part of what we learned was how to plant one on our own which you can get directions for after the tour. We then drove through a field of baby pineapples and I was sad we didn't get to stop because they were so cute!! We then stopped at a field of mature pineapples to take pictures. The last stop was back towards the front where we got to see the production site of packaging the pineapples and picked up our own box to take home. I wrapped up my time there was a frozen pineapple slushee from a mini cart in front of the building because I couldn't help myself. I loved my time there and it gave me more appreciation for growing a pineapple which takes 1.5 years!! The Maui gold ones were extremely sweet and I can see why they're so expensive.

We had so much fun learning about pineapple through this collaborative and intimate pineapple experience. Our tour guide did a great job explaining everything, she was very knowledgeable and helpful and has a great sense of humor, she explained things in the way that easy to understand and easy to learn. She is patient and let us get off the bus couple times to see the different stages of the pineapple journey. We saw pineapple flower for the first time, learned about pineapple is actually a kind of berry! The Maui Gold pineapple tasted great, and smelled wonderful! Highly recommended this pineapple experience in Maui.

Very informative tour of one of the last active pineapple plantation fields in the state of Hawaii, and Maui Gold Pineapple Plantation is a great way to find out more about how the popular fruit is grown and harvested along with its history! A pineapple is included in the admission for each guest, which is awesome and yes, you can take it on the plane with you (it does not count as a carry-on). You get to see the various stages of pineapple, from planting to baby stage to ripe stage and everything in between. And you'll get to sample the pineapple slices as well. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about these pineapples and explained very well how the fields are maintained and what to look for. We were on a shuttle bus that took us through the large fields and also provided excellent views of Kahului and the West Maui Mountains in the distance. Totally recommended especially if you love pineapples!

Best pineapples I've ever had! The tour isn't extensive but you do get to see the pineapples at various stages of growth AND you get to sample some and take one with you. You can see the lifecycle since you get to visit the packing plant and see the operations. You'll learn some great facts about pineapples too. Plus you can grab some merch when you get dropped off. Love these pineapples!!

If Oprah was giving these tours, she'd probably say, "You get a pineapple, you get a pineapple, everyone gets a pineapple!" Seriously. After the tour, each individual gets a sweet Maui Gold pineapple to take home with them. They host 1.5 hour long tours daily in the following slots: 9:30AM, 11:45AM & 1:45PM. We selected the first tour of the day. Upon arriving, we checked in at the desk and were directed to wait until one of the tour guides called us to board their bus. We browsed their gift shop which has food items, jewelry and even cute stuffed animals... all pineapple themed of course! At 9:30, our tour guide, Sean, called us over and we climbed into the bus. It was about the size of a short school bus (approx 20 people were in our group) and totally enclosed. Sean drove us to the farmland on the other side of the road, officially kicking off the tour. The fields are vast, so most of the time was spent on the bus with just two stops where we could step into the fields. It was interesting to hear about the growth cycle of pineapples and about the farmers' process. I won't spoil too much, but was astonished to hear that the farmers plant each pineapple by HAND... and we're talking millions of pineapples that this farm churns out! STOP #1: We got to look closely at a field of baby pineapples which are so cute! Sean then drew out his machete and masterfully chopped up some ripe pineapples, walking around so that each person could grab a piece with their skewer. Everyone got three large chunks of pineapple to eat. I am convinced I'll never have another pineapple as good as the ones from this farm... they taste like candy! Did you know a ripe pineapple could still be green? I had no idea. STOP #2: In a field of grown pineapples, Sean took pictures of each family with his phone and it was available via an emailed link immediately after. After everyone's photos were taken, we hopped back on the bus. STOP #3: At the warehouse building, we picked up our boxed pineapples. (This farm has an agreement with most airlines that they don't count as a carry-on.) Nothing was actually happening in the warehouse at the time, so it was just a quick stop in, closing out the tour. **Bottom Line** Overall, we learned a lot from Sean (he's super knowledgeable) and were in awe of the farm. So why 4 stars? The cost of $75 per person (over 13 years old) is quite pricey for the tour. Even kids ages 3-12 are a steep $65. Although this is a novelty experience, it's very costly for what you get.

Maui Pineapple Tour: An “Authentic” Maui Pineapple Farm

This post may contain some affiliate links, which means I’ll make a little money on anything you choose to purchase. But of course, I only recommend my absolute favorites to you. Thank you for supporting the brands that make HulaLand possible.

If there’s one thing you think of when you think of Hawaii…it just might be pineapple.

pineapple plantation tour maui

Surprisingly, pineapple isn’t native to Hawaii, but thanks to Dole, the two have become inextricably linked.

You’ve probably heard about the Dole Plantation on Oahu (it’s mostly just a tourist trap these days), but I’ve got something better for you. How about a real, working pineapple farm that grows most of the pineapple that’s actually consumed in Hawaii??

The Maui Gold Pineapple Company (locally owned and operated) is a 1,350 acre pineapple farming operation located on the slopes of Haleakala at Hali’imaile. And you can tour it!

pineapple plantation tour maui

This is not a cheesy, touristy experience. It’s a real working farm tour.

The Maui Pineapple Tour is probably my top “off the beaten path” thing to do on Maui.

Maui Pineapple Tour Details

Here are the details:

pineapple plantation tour maui

The tour lasts about 1.5 hours and is offered multiple times a day but I recommend booking the first tour of the day (9:30 AM) for the coolest temperatures.

There are about a dozen or so people on the small air conditioned bus that takes you out into the pineapple fields. You get on and off the bus at different points, but there’s not much walking and you’ll be able to leave your bags/water on the bus.

pineapple plantation tour maui

Call ahead before you book your tour to pick the best day. Last time I did the tour they were only picking pineapple on Monday-Thursday and that’s definitely something you’ll want to see if possible.

The tour includes a peak into the packing facility and everyone goes home with their own Maui Gold pineapple!

pineapple plantation tour maui

The tour costs $75/adult and $65/child.

pineapple plantation tour maui

For an extra $15 you can also add on a tour of the Hali’imaile Distillery that uses Maui Gold pineapples to make its spirits. Kids of all ages can go on the tour (12 and under are free), but have to be 21+ to go into the tasting room.

And I would definitely pair this whole experience with lunch at the Hali’imaile General Store across the street. It’s one of my favorite restaurants on Maui.

pineapple plantation tour maui

A few of my favorite moments from the tour: Hearing the history of pineapple in Hawaii, watching them pick pineapple, eating as much pineapple as we wanted straight from the field, planting a pineapple starter, seeing nene birds, and making a stop to see some of the best views of the island.

***Want to save major $$$ on your trip to Hawaii? I get asked ALL the time how I’m able to travel so often to Hawaii and stay at really nice resorts. Well, my favorite travel hack is cashing in points to score free airfare and free nights at some of Hawaii’s most high end resorts. Read my full guide on the exact system I use to max out credit card rewards here . Seriously, it’s going to save you soooo much money.

pineapple plantation tour maui

Fun Fact: Hummingbirds are illegal in Hawaii! Since hummingbirds are such major pollinators, they can really change the characteristics of pineapple and experts have worked for years to get the Maui Gold variety just perfect so since it’s an island, they can just prohibit them from being brought in. If you ever eat a pineapple and it has little black dots, that means it’s been pollinated by a hummingbird!

You can book the Maui Pineapple Tour here .

* I mentioned pairing the tour with lunch at the Haliimaile General Store, but if you’re looking to make a day out of it, here’s a few other things in the area:

  • Shopping in Paia Town
  • Drive up Olinda Road through the Upcountry
  • Twin Falls past Haiku
  • See the turtles at Ho’okipa Beach or Kuau Beach
  • Shopping and art galleries in Makawao

Maui vs Kauai // Everything You Need to Know BEFORE you go to Maui

Here’s one more really important thing you need to know before your Hawaii trip…

Reservations You Need to Make BEFORE Your Hawaii Trip

You’ve got your airfare, hotel, rental car and your big activities booked, so you should be good to go, right? Wrong!

Travel is BOOMING in Hawaii so a lot of state and national parks used the closure and reopening to institute reservation systems at some of the island’s most popular spots to make things a little more sustainable.

That means that there are now over half a dozen sites (beaches, trailheads, etc.) that require advance reservations. And some sell out well before you arrive on the island so you really need to have some sort of a plan.

I recently saw somebody in a Hawaii travel group post in a panic that they didn’t know they had to make reservations for things in advance…they thought they could just show up and “go with the flow.” I was tempted to say, well, “as long as the flow doesn’t take you somewhere that requires reservations, you can!” ; )

But I don’t want YOU to be that person, so I’ve pulled together a list of all the places you need to reserve entry in advance (plus all the details on booking windows, price, links, etc.) and a handful of popular tourist hotspots that book out really far in advance too.

Haleakala National Park (Maui)

To visit Haleakala National Park for sunrise at the summit, you must make reservations in advance here.

Reservations are required to enter the park gates between 3AM and 7AM (sunrise hours).

Online reservations are $1 per reservation/vehicle PLUS you’ll pay the park entrance fee of $30/vehicle when you arrive (National Park annual passes are also accepted at the gate).

The reservation booking window opens 60 days in advance at 7AM HST. There are also a limited number of tickets released two days before.

You can make one reservation every three days with the same account. So if you want to make reservations for back to back days (in case of weather/conditions), you’ll need to do so with separate accounts (email addresses).

If you can’t get reservations for sunrise, you can enter the park anytime after 7AM without reservations. The summit is spectacular during the day and you don’t need reservations for sunset.

I strongly recommend creating an account before and making sure you’re logged in at 7AM HST because it’s not uncommon for reservations to sell out quickly.

Waianapanapa State Park (Maui)

To visit Maui’s famous black sand beach at Waianapanapa State Park on the Road to Hana, you must make reservations in advance here.

Reservations are required to visit the beach and are distributed in windows from 7AM-10AM, 10AM-12:30PM, 12:30PM-3PM, and 3PM-6PM. And they are pretty strict about exiting by the end of your window time (you can arrive anytime within your window).

It’s $5/person to enter plus $10/vehicle to park and those fees are paid when you book your time slot.

Reservations open up 30 days in advance.

Iao Valley State Park (Maui)

To visit the lush, green mountains and hike at Iao Valley State Park, you must make reservations in advance here.

Reservations are offered for 90 minute time slots beginning at 7AM and ending at 6PM. They ask that you arrive within the first 30 minutes of your time slot.

Entry is $5/person plus $10/vehicle to park.

Diamond Head (Oahu)

To hike to the top of Waikiki’s famous Diamond Head, you must make reservations in advance here.

Reservations are offered in two hour increments beginning at 6AM (6AM-8AM, 8AM-10AM, etc.) and ending at 6PM. If you’re parking onsite, they ask that you arrive within the first 30 minutes of your reservation window.

Tip: I recommend booking one of the first two time slots because there isn’t much shade on this hike and it gets pretty hot.

Hanauma Bay (Oahu)

To snorkel at Oahu’s pristine Hanauma Bay, you must make reservations in advance here.

Entry times are staggered in 10 minute increments from 7AM to 1:20PM with roughly 1000 slots being assigned in advance every day.

Reservations can be made two days in advance and they open at 7AM HST. They’re usually gone in minutes (if not seconds).

If you’re unable to get an advanced reservation, you can try for a day of, walk in ticket. They open at 6:45AM and they only have a limited number available. Everyone in your group needs to be present when you purchase your tickets in person.

There are no reservations for parking and it’s first come, first serve. $3/vehicle.

It’s $25/person to snorkel at Hanauma Bay (12 and under, active military, and locals with HI ID are free).

The Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is open Wednesday through Sunday (CLOSED MONDAY AND TUESDAY) from 6:45AM-4PM. Last entry is at 1:30PM, the beach is cleared at 3:15PM and you have to leave the facility by 4PM.

Jellyfish patterns can also affect whether or not the bay is open so double check the day before/day of.

USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor (Oahu)

If you want to take the boat tour at Pearl Harbor out to the USS Arizona, it’s recommended to make advance reservations here.

Online reservations are guaranteed a specific boarding time to go out to the USS Arizona. If you’re unable to get an advance reservation, you can wait standby when you arrive. The line could be short (15 minutes or so) or long (hours) and it just depends on the day (if they’re having problems with the loading dock sometimes they don’t take many from the standby line) and the time of day.

Reservations are supposed to open up 60 days in advance, but keep an eye on your exact dates, because lately they’ve actually been opening up about 57ish days in advance???

They also release a small batch of tickets the day before.

The boat ride out to the USS Arizona is free, but it’s $1 to make the reservations online.

They recently started charging $7/vehicle for parking at Pearl Harbor.

Haena State Park / Kalalau Trail (Kauai)

If you want to hike Kauai’s famous Kalalau Trail, you must make advance reservations here. You’ve got three options here:

1) Parking & Entry: This is the most flexible option and also the most limited. THESE RESERVATIONS SELL OUT IN LESS THAN A MINUTE. There are three time slots available: 6:30AM-12:30PM, 12:30PM-5:30PM and 4:30PM to sunset. You can purchase multiple time slots if you want to stay longer. It’s $10/timeslot (parking) plus $5/person and you have to reserve every person when you initially book. Everybody has to arrive in the same car and your ID needs to match the reservation.

2) Shuttle & Entry: If you can’t get parking at the trailhead, there’s also a shuttle option. Shuttle reservations are $35/person (16+), $25/person (ages 4-15), 3 and under can ride free. The shuttle runs every 20 minutes 6:20AM to 6:40PM.

3) Entry Only: If you’re a Hawaiian resident (with HI ID) or someone WITH a Hawaiian resident, you can purchase entry only for $5/person with no advance reservations. Also, if you’re walking or biking to the trailhead you can do this option. But there is NOWHERE to park in the area to walk in. So this really only works for those with bikes or who are staying close enough to walk. They will tow your car if you park outside the designated areas.

The reservation window opens 30 days in advance at 12AM HST. The parking & entry option usually sells out in a minute, but the shuttle availability will last longer.

There are a TON of FAQs here including the possibility of snagging a canceled reservation.

Other Things to Book in Advance

Hawaii is a busy place these days! Besides the state and national parks above, here’s a handful of miscellaneous things you should make reservations for in advance (if they’re on your radar):

Mama’s Fish House (Maui) : The iconic spot is the most popular restaurant in Hawaii and dinner reservations usually start filling up about 6 months in advance (they open up bookings 18 months in advance). Make reservations through their website and if the dates you want are already booked, you can join a waitlist. Most people have pretty good success getting in on the waitlist (even if it’s for lunch).

Old Lahaina Luau (Maui) : Honestly, any luau you’re planning to attend you should book early, but most people are usually shocked how far out the Old Lahaina Luau books out. Book it as soon as you know your dates (I think they open at the six month window). They also have a waitlist.

Kualoa Ranch UTV Tour (Oahu) : Everybody loves Jurassic Park so getting to ride UTVs where they filmed the movies is very popular. The ranch offers a lot of different tours but the UTV tours usually book out a couple of months in advance.

Spa Reservations : If you’re staying at a resort with a spa (or planning on visiting one), don’t wait until you arrive to make your reservations. I’d make them at least a month in advance.

Tee Times : Same for golf, reserve your tee times well in advance.

Dining Reservations : Any “fancy” or resort restaurant is likely to be booked up these days so if you like having a nice dinner every night, make your plans in advance.

Maui is known for its beautiful beaches and amazing snorkeling. But there’s another side to Maui you’ll want to make time to explore: its vibrant agriculture community. From farm-fresh produce to gourmet farm-to-table meals, enjoy local produce (and try something new!) on your trip to Maui.

And watch our Maui Farm Tour video where you can see what to expect when visiting a farm on Maui:

Produce Farm Tours

Agriculture is the second largest industry on Maui , so dive into the local flavors with tropical fruit, freshly grown vegetables, or Maui coffee.

1. O’o Farm Coffee Tour

Head upcountry for an immersive farm tour and farm-to-table experience with O’o Farm. Start your morning with a cup of their French press coffee and head out on your tour. You’ll then walk through the farm on their “seed to cup” tour, learning how a coffee seed is grown, harvested, and roasted into a cup of perfection. Once the tour is finished, you’ll head to outdoor dining tables for a healthy breakfast and coffee tasting. Water and coffee are included but you’re welcome to kick up the experience even more by bringing your beverages (mimosas?).

Learn more about their breakfast and coffee farm tour .

There’s so much more to do in Upcountry. Check out our list of 15 amazing things to do in upcountry Maui.

2. O’o Farm Lunch Tour

O’o Farm offers a second, longer tour that focuses on the produce grown on the farm. This is the same produce that they supply to Pacific’o restaurant in Lahaina (one of our favorite spots for dinner and sunset). You’ll start the tour with a walk through the property, learning about the different produce grown on-site. You’ll then sit down for a multi-course gourmet lunch prepared by a chef. The leisurely lunch is truly special. Between each course, the chef comes out to discuss what produce is being used to prepare each dish. And just like the coffee tour, you’re welcome to bring your beverages, like a bottle of wine to enjoy with your meal.

Book a spot on their gourmet lunch and farm tour .

3. Ono Organic Farms

A family-run tropical fruit and coffee farm, Ono Organic Farms in Hana offers daily tours. And this isn’t just a farm — this 50-acre farm is one of the largest tropical fruit farms in Hawaii. All of their produce is hand-picked and you’ll see it sold at various places around Maui.

On the tour, you’ll spend 90 minutes driving through the property stopping to learn about and sample the different fruits being grown. These are tropical and some exotic fruits, so there’s a good chance you’ll be sampling at least a few types of fruit you’ve never tried before.

Learn more about Ono Organic Farms and book a tour .

4. Maui Pineapple Tours

There are two pineapple plantations in the state of Hawaii and Maui is lucky enough to be home to one of them. On the tour, you’re guided through the entire operation, from growing pineapples through various stages to harvesting, and finally sorting and shipping. On the 1.5-hour tour, you’ll learn all the secrets: how to pick the best pineapple at the store, how to cut a perfect pineapple, and how to use a pineapple top to grow your pineapples at home.

There are plenty of pineapple samples and you’ll even head home with a boxed, airport-ready pineapple.

Learn more and book the Maui Pineapple Tour here .

This tour makes an appearance as a stop on our Maui itinerary .

5. Maui Dragon Fruit Farm

Take a walking tour of this dragon fruit farm located in the hills above Lahaina. You’ll eat plenty of fruit (yes, a lot of dragon fruit — they have 16 different varieties) as well as other fruits, depending on the season. The tour lasts 1 hour and at the end you’ll enjoy a box of fruit to take with you and you can also purchase a dragon fruit smoothie (YUM) or add on another activity, like ziplining or aquaball.

Learn more and purchase tickets directly from Maui Dragon Fruit Farm .

6. Punakea Palms (Coconut Farm Tour)

Ever wondered how a coconut tree produces coconuts that we then use the water, milk, and meat from? The Punakea Palms tour walks you through the entire process of this culturally important fruit.

From a coconut tree growing out of a coconut (they don’t need to be planted in the ground right away…crazy!), to finally making coconut milk. Also located just above Lahaina, this is an easy tour to add onto a day of sightseeing. You’ll sample coconut water through various stages and head home with some freshly made coconut milk.

7. Ku’ia Estate Chocolate

From farm to bar, take a tour that teaches you how chocolate is grown, farmed, and made into a delicious piece of food. The experience at Ku’ia is unique. You can start with a tour of their 20 acre farm, sampling cacao seeds directly from the tree. And you can visit their factory to do a full chocolate tasting, sampling different flavors and chocolate produced on Maui.

Ku’ia Estate Chocolate offers two guided tours from their farm and factory in Lahaina. One tour includes a farm tour and a tasting and the other is a tasting tour (9 varieties!). Learn more and book the tours below.

We enjoyed a sneak peek of the farm tour as well as a full chocolate tasting, which you can watch in the video below:

8. Maui Nui Thai

We found this farm stand and tour by happy accident. We had heard whispers of the best Thai food truck in upcountry and we were so thrilled when we found ourselves there for lunch. But what we didn’t know before visiting was that it’s not just a food truck — it’s a farm. Behind the food truck is a 40 acre farm, where the ingredients used in the truck are sourced from. They also offer farmers market days and farm tours.

9. Kumu Farms and Maui Tropical Plantation

You don’t have to head up to Upcountry to enjoy a farm tour. Located in central Maui, Maui Tropical Plantation offers farm tours via a tram. This 45-minute tour takes you around the property where you can get a glimpse of different tropical plants and why they are culturally significant. They also make a stop to teach you about coconuts.

Once the farm tram tour is over, you can head into the marketplace to purchase produce grown by Kumu Farms. They also offer coffee drinks from the local Oma Coffee Roasters and produce from local makers around the island.

We enjoyed the farm tour but my favorite part was exploring the Kumu Farm shop and stocking up on the local goods.

Visit Maui Tropical Plantation .

10. Kula Country Farms

Visit pretty much any grocery store on Maui and you’ll find strawberries from Kula Country Farms. This upcountry farm and store are famous for their strawberry picking (February – June) as well as their fall pumpkin patch. They are located on the way up to Haleakala and make a perfect stop to stretch your legs before continuing your journey.

11. Maui Tea Farm

Located on the beautiful slopes of Haleakala (near Kula in Upcountry Maui), enjoy a scenic tour of Hawaii’s premier loose leaf tea farm. Their tea plants grow alongside native Hawaiian koa, ’ōhi’a, and māmane trees, as well as among coffee, citrus, olive and other fruit tress, flowers, and exotic botanicals. They also specialize in the growing and processing of the unique, native Hawaiian herbal tisane known as māmaki (a plant in the nettle family with healing properties).

Travel up to 4,100 feet to enjoy this Maui farm tour. They offer two tours a day (10:00 am and 1:00 pm).

12. La Kahea Community Farm’s Farm-to-Taco Cooking Class

This community-led Maui farm offers two tours and they are conveniently located in Maui’s Central Valley. The regenerative farmer on Maui has a mission to care for the land, promote food security, and feed people healthy food. We can all get behind that!

LaKahea Maui Farm Tours

They offer two tours:

  • Taste of Hawaii: A Maui Farm Tour – indulge in fresh fruit, sip ice-cold sugar cane juice, eat delicious rare treats, and take home a gift you can’t get anywhere else!
  • Farm-to-Taco: A Farm Table Cooking Class – learn how to craft tortillas from scratch, harvest farm-fresh taco ingredients, and whip up banana “ice cream”.

Learn more and book their tours here: La Kahea Community Farm .

13. Maui Macadamia Tours

We brag to all our friends about this tour because we were the first people to go on it! The owner, John, took us on an exclusive tour of his macadamia nut plantation a few years ago. See the video to learn more as this tour is so much more than picking mac nuts and processing them. John runs a lot on the farm that supports the Maui community.

They offer a macadamia nut walking tour and a farm-to-table lunch tour. Learn more and book here: Maui Macadamia Tours .

They also have Ulu Ulu Cafe (farm-to-table food truck) which we highlight as part of our North Maui day in our Maui Wayfinder Itinerary .

14. Maui Bees

When our three-year-old son started asking us detailed questions about how bees make honey, we knew it was time for a visit to Maui Bees. Located on the sunny slope of Haleakala, Maui Bees offers farm tours, a delicious cafe (using produce grown on-site or locally), and a private dinner experience. You can visit the bee museum to watch bees flying into and out of a hive, walk the farm to understand how regenerative agriculture is improving the land and the food we eat, and see how the honey gets from hive to jar.

We sampled the honey and took jars of both the winter and summer varieties home with us, which our son now eats by the spoonful.

15. Surfing Goat Dairy

Another great stop for adults and kids is Surfing Goat Dairy. Walk the farm to learn about, pet, and feed the friendly goats and then hear about the process of how cheese is made. It’s an interactive and short tour where you’ll have fun feeding the goats and watching baby goats play. Then treat yourself to a sampling of their cheeses while you sit out on the farm and relax. They have tour options ranging from 30 minutes to 2.5 hours.

16. Maui Animal Farm

This is a fun activity for the kids. A visit to Maui Animal Farm will have them walking through and interacting with a number of different fun farm animals on the petting zoo tour. The tour starts out with a visit with some smaller animals — birds and bunnies. Then it moves onto some of the larger farm animals that you get to feed and learn about: pigs, goats, horses, tortoises, and more.

Learn more and book with Maui Animal Farm .

Alcoholic Beverage Farm Tours

Farm tours aren’t just reserved for animals and produce. These two farm tours offer locally crafted beverages and make for a fun stop or day out.

Maui Farm Tour Ocean Vodka Distillery

17. Ocean Vodka Organic Farm and Distillery

Right near Surfing Goat Dairy is an organic farm and vodka distillery. They offer 35 minute distillery tasting tours, which include learning about sugar cane and the process of producing their vodka. While this isn’t a normal farm tour, you can enjoy some of their produce grown on-site by visiting the farm cafe. Here you’ll have a selection of pizzas and salads to enjoy, with as many of the ingredients as possible sourced from their farm or locally.

And possibly the best part? The view. Enjoy a sweeping view of central Maui and see the ocean on both sides. There is a large lawn for young ones to enjoy and plenty of chairs and picnic tables available to sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful view.

Book a distillery tasting tour with Ocean Vodka Organic Farm and Distillery .

18. Maui Wine

Yes, there is a winery here on Maui. And yes, it is just as beautiful as you would expect. Located in Ulupalakua in upcountry, you’ll stop at a winery after an absolutely beautiful drive to get there. You’ll visit the winery with large gardens and beautiful views. And you can sample their wines, including their famous pineapple wine, made with Maui Gold Pineapples. The atmosphere is laid back — exactly what you would expect from a winery on Maui. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon.

This famous Hawaii restaurant was a pioneer in the farm-to-table movement. At least 90% of the ingredients are locally grown or caught using sustainable methods. On Maui the Merriman’s restaurant is located in Kapalua, but there are other locations on Kauai, the Big Island, and Oahu.

OHANA EXPRESS

Our fourth and newest train, The Ohana Express, was also built in China by Hangzhou Trains Equipment Co., Ltd. It is our newest work horse. Its drive is Diesel Electric similar to full size trains operating all over the United States. The locomotive is an 0-6-0 with separate tender. It hauls three passenger cars, also manufactured by Hangzhou Trains Equipment Co., Ltd.

LADY LIBERTY

The Lady Liberty train arrived in the islands in 2003 and was designed as a replica of a Mason Bogey 0-4-4T, originally manufactured by Mason Machine Works in Taunton, Massachusetts in 1883. This particular model was popular in the early 1900’s due to its ability to run on 3′ gauge tracks on hills and over sharp curves. They were used all over the United States in mining, logging and short-line passenger service.

ALOHA EXPRESS

The Aloha Express train was built in China by Hangzhou Trains Equipment Co., Ltd. Its drive is Diesel Electric similar to full size trains operating all over the United States. Maui Gold Pineapple leads the way: Transforming agriculture with soil innovation and reef-safe practices

pineapple plantation tour maui

An acre of Maui Gold Pineapple’s farm is the location of a new test plot for biological soil amendment, organic liquid filled with nutrients and microbes created by SoilThrive by Environmental Solutions Maui.

Sitting on a hillside plantation previously run by Maui Land and Pineapple Company, Maui Gold Pineapple (Hāliʻimaile Pineapple Company), its successor, leased property years ago that had a long history of extensive pesticide and fertilizer use impacting water wells and coastal waters through runoff. While terrace blocks are carved out to prevent runoff, this belies the fact that chemical runoff continues to impact Maui’s shores.

Maui Gold Director of Agriculture Darren Strand is looking to change that.

“As stewards of the land, we have always recognized the importance of protecting our coastal ecosystems,” said Strand. “Continuing to implement more reef-friendly practices at Maui Gold is one way to show our commitment to sustainability and responsible land management.”

In addition to a test plot using organic soil amendment, plastic bed covers have transitioned to biodegradable materials, and the irrigation and drip tape is reused or removed from the field and goes to a place on continent for recycling, according to Strand.

“Darren [Strand] is wonderfully open minded,” said SoilThrive partner Charlotte O’Brien. “He’s allowing us to do something most people would not.”

For the test plot, local small business SoilThrive created a plant-available compost extract whose methodology was pioneered in Dr. Elaine Ingham’s “Soil Food Web Approach.” Although once “booed off stage” for her ideas years ago, Ingham has inspired many including the partners of SoilThrive to enact her soil regeneration method.

The method involves young, vibrant compost and vermicompost washed in water and beaten at such high pressure that organisms are effectively “pulled” from the water. The microbes are then filtered into water to yield a rich liquid that can be sprayed on crops and soil. O’Brien says that SoilThrive uses a minuscule amount of liquid kelp, but other than that, the green waste and labor is sourced on Maui.

Launch day of the test plot was hosted by Maui Gold and Maui Nui Marine Resource Council at the pineapple farm in Hāliʻimaile on Wednesday, May 8. It was joined by several supporters as well as local and state government officials.

Partners of SoilThrive were onsite spraying, demonstrating and leading the conversation on how their liquid biological amendment mixture works.

The pineapples “drink” microbes from the bottom of the pineapple leaf, which is the root, and from around the soil, said O’Brien on launch day. “Once the microbe community gets exposed, you don’t need to keep feeding it,” she added.

SoilThrive partner Robin Leimomi Proctor suggested a major benefit to its liquid biological amendment is improving water retention of the soil for reducing runoff.

“For every 1% organic matter that you increase the soil, the soil holds between 20,000 to 38,000 gallons of water per acre mycorrhizal fungi,” Proctor said. “The other benefit of what they call mycorrhizal fungi is that they feed the plant and the plant feeds them. They’re amazingly intelligent.”

SoilThrive intends to collect soil and crop samples of the pineapple rows being staged on Maui Gold Pineapple’s plot, comprising 19 types of soil testing and crop monitoring to be assessed during the pilot program. The first round of soil and tissue samples are being collected and sent to Regen Ag Lab, according to O’Brien, who hopes to see higher levels of fungal biomass that facilitate water retention. Ultimately, the tests could help determine the possibility of phasing out chemical-based fertilizers in landscaping, farming and other agricultural pursuits on Maui.

For Maui Gold, deeming to have the “sweetest pineapples in the world,” the measure of success of the pilot program will take into account factors like pineapple growth, environmental benefit and, of course, cost.

“If we can cut off 30% or 60% of the fertilizer sprays on a block and still have the same growth and quality, that’s very significant for us,” said Strand.

Strand said, while he doesn’t necessarily predict that biological soil amendment will speed up the 18-20 months plant-to-harvest duration of their pineapple, it may “reduce the amount of fertilizers, insecticides and even herbicides that would be typical on the plot.”

Strand also suggested the potential of incorporating regenerative farming education into its tours, which attracted about 55,000 visitors in 2022. “Potentially there’s a lot of people that are interested in agriculture,” said Strand. “They might go back home and be motivated or encouraged to do that type of thing.”

Reef-Safe Landscaping

In addition to the test plot, SoilThrive and Maui Nui Marine Resource Council (MNMRC) celebrated their partnership to assess the possibility of phasing out chemical-based fertilizers in landscaping across Maui.

The MNMRC’s Reef-Friendly Landscaping program focuses on minimizing chemical pollution and runoff from agricultural and residential areas that may harm marine life and coral reefs and recently opened enrollment to its certification course , which kicks off May 22.

Since 2023, MNMRC and SoilThrive claim to having provided their reef-safe products and education for landscaping at 12 Maui resorts, including six on West Maui and a one-year contract to provide regenerative agricultural products to Kahoma Village in Lahaina, an HOA affected by last year’s wildfires.

“We are excited to have Maui Gold Pineapple pilot our Reef-Friendly Landscaping program on their farm,” said Jill Wirt, program director at MNMRC. “They are the first agricultural business to partner with us. We know the program’s success on their farm will demonstrate how agricultural businesses of all sizes can thrive while driving positive change for Maui’s land and reefs.”

With its landscaping pilot program, O’Brien of SoilThrive says the planting of grass and trees in landscaping implores a different type of product than the soil amendment being sprayed on Maui Gold’s test plot of pineapples, although with similar benefits.

SoilThrive gets its liquid concoction for coating seeds and flora from 11 of Johnson-Su bioreactors, which hold up to 2,000 lbs of mulch each and result in a microbially diverse and fungal-dominant soil microbiome that can be applied at concentrations as low as two pounds per acre. The concentration acts more as a microbial inoculation for soils than as a soil amendment, meaning it is “perfect for carbon sequestration for planting trees,” O’Brien said.

“This isn’t just something we want; it’s what we need on Maui,” concluded O’Brien.

Editor’s note: This post has been updated to clarify the fact that Maui Land and Pineapple Company still owns the agricultural property it has leased to tenants Maui Gold Pineapple (Hāliʻimaile Pineapple Company), since closing its operation in 2009.

An Amazing 4-Day Maui Itinerary

Follow this 4-day Maui itinerary to maximize your time enjoying the very best this “Valley Isle” has to offer.

With its lush rainforests, breathtaking waterfalls, and miles of pristine beaches, Maui offers endless opportunities for adventure and relaxation.

After an unforgettable trip to Maui, we’ve created this island itinerary to help others experience the best of this Hawaiian paradise.

Maui Itinerary

Maui has so much to offer. Use our 4-day itinerary to ensure you make the most of your treasured time on this Hawaiian gem known as the “Valley Isle.”

Day 1: Road to Hana and Twin Falls Hike

After a peaceful night of rest and a great  breakfast in Maui , we started our day on a scenic drive.

Road to Hana, a 64-mile stretch of highway that offers stunning views of waterfalls, rainforests, and the ocean. We stopped at various points along the way to explore, take photos, or enjoy a picnic.

I wanted to capture everything I saw. Fortunately, we rented a car with an open sunroof to take photos from the side of the road.

One of the first stops on the Road to Hana is Twin Falls, a popular spot for hiking and swimming.

The trails range from easy to moderate in difficulty. We chose a short trail that led to a waterfall.

The hike is about 1.5 miles round trip and takes about an hour to complete. You can also visit the farm stand at the entrance to buy fresh fruits, smoothies, or coconut candy.

After your hike, continue driving on the Road to Hana and enjoy the rest of the sights.

Some of the highlights include the Garden of Eden Arboretum, the Ke’anae Peninsula, the Wai’anapanapa State Park, and the Hana Lava Tube. You can also visit the Hana Cultural Center and Museum to learn more about the history and culture of the area.

For lunch, we stopped at a roadside food truck that served taro chips and other local specialties for lunch.

You can spend the night in Hana at one of the hotels, cottages, or bed and breakfasts available.

For dinner, you can try some of the restaurants in Hana, such as Hana Ranch Restaurant or Poke Bob’s.

Alternatively, you can drive back to your accommodation in another part of the island, but be prepared for a long and winding drive in the dark.

Day 2: Pineapple Farm Tour and Shopping

After seeing the island yesterday, we were super excited to tour the Maui Gold pineapple farm . We started the day with breakfast at the Maui Seaside Hotel and then hopped in the car for what we hoped would be less than a 15-minute drive to Haliimaile. It took us about 20 minutes because we couldn’t find it on the first try.

The Maui Pineapple Farm is a 90-minute guided tour of a working pineapple plantation. We learned how pineapples are grown, harvested, and processed, and we tasted some of the sweetest and juiciest pineapples in the world.

Check availability for the Maui Pineapple Tour .

We spent some time in the fields cutting our pineapples and tasting the sweet goodness. It felt like hard work in the sun, but the reward was delicious.

After being in the field, we toured the factory where pineapples were packed and shipped. In the end, we received a case (2-pack) of pineapples for free to take home. I am glad that we enjoyed a couple of them as a snack on the beach a few days later. The remaining pineapples didn’t taste as fresh by the time we returned home and ate them.

After the tour, we decided not to visit the 60-acre estate that showcases a variety of tropical fruits, flowers, and crops. From what I heard, you can plan for more adventures, enjoy a zipline adventure, or browse the gift shop and market for souvenirs and local products.

For lunch, we stopped at a restaurant in Paia.

In the afternoon, we decided to do some shopping. Some of the best places to shop in the area include Lahaina Cannery Mall and Whalers Village.

Due to recent fires in Maui, I recommend The Shops at Wailea and Paia Town. You can find everything from clothing, jewelry, art, and crafts to Hawaiian souvenirs, snacks, and coffee.

Since it was the closest, we went shopping in Paia and darted in and out of several cute boutiques, Then we stopped at Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice for refreshments.

For dinner, you can choose from a variety of cuisines and restaurants in Maui, such as Mama’s Fish House or Monkeypod Kitchen to try some of the local delicacies, such as poke, spam musubi, or loco moco.

Day 3: Haleakala National Park and Upcountry Maui

We woke up early and drove for an hour to the summit of Haleakala, a dormant volcano that forms most of the land in Maui.

If you can rise with the birds, make a reservation in advance to enter the park between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m., as this is the most popular time to watch the sunrise from the top of the mountain.

You will also need to dress warmly, as the temperature quite chilly at the summit.

Once we reached it, we parked and walked tot the Haleakala Visitor Center to view the exhibits.

Don’t miss the Pu’u’ula’ula Overlook, the highest point in the park at over 10,000 feet above sea level. From there, we enjoyed the breathtaking views of the crater, the clouds, and the horizon.

The park has a variety of trails, landscapes, and wildlife. You can hike to the crater floor, where you can see cinder cones, lava tubes, and native birds. Or you can hike to Hosmer Grove, where you can see a forest of exotic and invasive trees.

You can also drive to see the Ohe’o Gulch, also known as the Seven Sacred Pools, a series of waterfalls and pools that flow into the ocean.

It’s a good thing that we packed snacks before the trip to the park. It kept our appetite at bay before finding a local cafe.

Next was a visit to the Kula Botanical Garden, where you can see a collection of tropical plants, flowers, and sculptures.

On our drive back to the hotel, we explored Upcountry Maui, a rural and scenic area that is home to farms, ranches, and wineries.

If you prefer to kick back and enjoy a relaxing trip to Upcountry Maui , I recommend a private tour.

Check availability for the Maui Upcountry Farm Tour .

We visited the Surfing Goat Dairy to see how goat cheese is made and tasted some of their award-winning products.

The weather was nice and we enjoyed the scenery and tour experiences.

Day 4: Beach Day

Since yesterday was packed with activities, we spent our last day relaxing at the beach, took long strolls, and watched the world go by.

Maui has many beautiful beaches in Maui to enjoy sun, sand, and surf.

We visited Baldwin Beach Park for its proximity to our hotel and low-key traffic.

The recreation facilities are nice. There is a soccer field, a softball backstop, a cricket pitch, public restrooms, and an outdoor shower.

The picnic area has 3 tables and 3 BBQ grills.

Parking was also easy. There is a larger parking lot that holds 100 cars and there is also an unmarked sand lot.

To the east end of the park, we found a couple of food trucks for bites and drinks.

On a beautiful sunny day, the views can’t be beat!

Full Day Tours

This tour offers a comprehensive taste of Maui’s diverse agriculture and artisan crafts.

We love this tour because it is ideal for travelers seeking an efficient way to experience the island’s unique sights and flavors in just one day.

Needless to say, it is a wonderful way to spend the day in the eastern part of the island.

Private Tour of Maui

This is an incredible group tour that take the hassle out of driving. All you have to do is give your pickup point and away you go!

the Valley Isle Tour seems best suited for travelers who want an efficient overview of Maui’s top sights in a single day.

The full-day small group tour is limited to 14 people and hits up major highlights like the Iao Valley State Park, the rugged coastline of the Road to Hana, and more.

Those with limited mobility may find the stops at Iao Valley and Olowalu Reef challenging however.

Check availability for the Private Tour of Maui, the Valley Isle .

The tour includes hotel pickup/drop-off, lunch, and time for swimming and snorkeling. It would appeal to first-time visitors looking for an easy way to see the island as well as return visitors who want to revisit Maui’s most famous spots without planning all the logistics themselves.

Overall, this efficient driving tour appears ideal for travelers seeking an comprehensive overview of Maui’s spectacular scenery and major attractions in the convenience of a guided small group excursion.

Final Thoughts on the 4-day Maui Itinerary

The Hawaiian island of Maui is a paradise for nature lovers. If you enjoy active excursions, scenic vistas, and exploring lively towns, I cannot recommend Maui highly enough.

This island offers endless opportunities for adventure, relaxation, and awe-inspiring natural beauty. From sun-soaked beaches to dramatic clifftop lookouts, the landscapes left me in awe.

And despite its small size, the island is packed with fascinating history and culture to discover.

Don’t make my mistake of underestimating Maui. The wealth of activities makes it an unforgettable tropical destination.

I hope this itinerary helps you plan your trip to Maui. Have a wonderful time!
