PGA Tour of Australasia schedule unveiled

PGA Tour of Australasia schedule unveiled

In a week where isps handa was named as the major sponsor of the australian open and hannah green confirmed her attendance at home later this year, the pga tour of australasia has also released its upcoming schedule for the summer of golf..

There will be 16 events played from October 2022 to April 2023, with the highlights of the summer being the Fortinet Australian PGA, the return of the men’s and women’s Australian Opens played concurrently on the Melbourne Sandbelt and the Tour heading back to New Zealand for the country’s Open and PGA Championships.

Starting in Western Australia at the WA PGA held at Kalgoorlie from October 13, the Tour visits two countries and five states with both metropolitan and regional venues playing host.

“We are well on our way to a growth strategy with our Tour highlighted by two co-sanctioned DP World Tour events, state PGAs, state Opens, two events back in New Zealand and then the Webex Players Series events,” PGA of Australia CEO Gavin Kirkman told reporters this week.

“The other thing that we have worked really hard on is to grow the prize pools, and as the events get announced we hope like all Tours at the moment we can continue to grow our prize pools. Our focus is on our 200 plus Tour members to create really good playing opportunities to create pathways and to have them playing on major Tours within Australia but also outside Australia.”

The growth of the Tour schedule has been much needed in Australia, where the heyday of 20 plus years ago when top names regularly came Down Under and a plentiful calendar were but a distant memory, with local players needing to head overseas to make their living.

Although those at the helm acknowledge that pathways to more lucrative circuits overseas is a primary driving factor in their mission, an increase of local playing opportunities is a key point of a five year growth plan currently at its midway point.

“The vision we set out on was a five plus year vision that was set out about two years ago, but it is something we have been working on the last couple of years now and have put a few of those building blocks in place in that time which we all know has been a difficult time to really take things forward,” Tournament Director for the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia Nick Dastey said.

“Some of those things we really set out to do was, we weren’t happy with where our schedule was at the end of 2019 pre-pandemic and certainly the amount of events that we had on our Tour wasn’t where it needed to be.

"The amount of prize money the players had to play for wasn’t where it needed to be, and we wanted to make some real changes to that and really start to one concentrate on increasing the amount of playing opportunities or events on our Tour that were available to our players and the prize money, but a real focus on the pathways and where we wanted to go with the opportunities for our players to get overseas Tours and certainly the PGA Tour and to the DP World Tour.”

“The vision we set out on was a five plus year vision that was set out about two years ago, but it is something we have been working on the last couple of years now ... we weren’t happy with where our schedule was at the end of 2019 pre-pandemic."  - Nick Dastey.

Dastey noted an aim of one day having 22-25 events on the calendar, with the bigger event prize pools to also grow from the current $2 million on offer at the PGA and $1.7 million at the Australian Open. As well as more larger events being part of the schedule.

One other area of change will be the switch from a monetary based Order of Merit back to a points system, which will make the challenge for three DP World Tour cards on offer via the season long standings less of a result from one good week at either of the country’s national championships. Players will also be required to play four events to earn a place on the Order of Merit standings at the end of the season.

“Last year was a unique year with the one major tournament and certainly it could be skewed in that way, but we will be moving to a points system and we have conveyed that with our membership,” Dastey said.

“We have a few details we are finalising, and we will go through but we will move to points. We have done a hell of a lot of modelling on that and worked very closely with the TPC and the playing group in general on that over time.

“By moving to points, and also having three plus major events, that will be less skewed in that way and certainly performance in the smaller events around the country will make a difference to your final season end points position.”

Complete guide to the PGA Tour of Australasia season

by Australian Golf Media

Tour preview image

By Tony Webeck

Superstars back on Australian shores, time-honoured tournaments returning to the schedule and a format change that promises to deliver an enthralling race to crown an Order of Merit champion; the 2022/2023 ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia season is coming in hot.

Starting with the CKB WA PGA Championship presented by TX Civil & Logistics at the iconic Kalgoorlie Golf Course on the western fringe of the Nullarbor Plain, there are 16 scheduled tournaments throughout Australia and New Zealand over the next six months.

The ISPS HANDA Australian Open will be contested for the first time since 2019 and will break new ground of its own.

For the first time the Australian Open will bring both male and female golfers together at two storied venues in Victoria Golf Club and Kingston Heath Golf Club.

Legends such as Karrie Webb and Geoff Ogilvy will tee it up alongside stars of today such as Cameron Smith, Adam Scott, Hannah Green and Stephanie Kyriacou and two-time men’s champion Matt Jones.

The Australian Open is also one of two DP World Tour co-sanctioned events as one of golf’s biggest tours kicks off its season Down Under.

With record prize money of $2 million, the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship will serve as the first event of the new DP World Tour season where former winners in Smith and Scott will go head-to-head with Kiwi No.1 Ryan Fox, Min Woo Lee, Lucas Herbert and defending champion Jed Morgan.

With people now able to freely move between Australia and New Zealand, the season is also significantly enhanced by the return of the New Zealand Open for the first time since 2020 and the NZ PGA Championship which has been on hiatus since 2019.

There will be extensive television coverage over the course of the season and the move to a points-based Order of Merit is designed to deliver a thrilling finale in April where numerous pathway opportunities will be awarded to the top finishers.

“After two challenging years due to COVID-19 we are thrilled to unveil a 16-tournament schedule that welcomes back some of the largest events on the PGA Tour of Australasia calendar,” said PGA of Australia Tournaments Director Australasia.

“Travel restrictions have limited our capacity to conduct tournaments in New Zealand so we can’t wait to get back to two events with such rich histories.

“It’s also great to have the Australian Open back and the coming together of both men and women on the Melbourne Sandbelt promises to begin a new chapter for two of Australia’s most treasured championships.

“This season also represents the return of some of our very best players to our biggest tournaments and their enthusiasm and support should ensure the summer of golf is one of our most successful in many years.”

The season commences with consecutive tournaments in Western Australia followed by a three-week break back.

Starting with the Victorian PGA Championship at Moonah Links from November 10-13 there is a five-week run of tournaments highlighted by the Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland Golf Club (November 24-27) and Australian Open (December 1-4).

In addition to tournaments in four of the country’s capital cities, the PGA Tour of Australasia season also stretches into regional communities on the Murray River, Victoria’s West Gippsland region and Mornington and Bellarine peninsulas, the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales and Kalgoorlie-Boulder in WA, where it all begins on Thursday. 2022/2023 schedule

‘The Chase is On’ for the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia

The Chase Is On for the professionals on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia with the full schedule of 18 events for 2023/24 released today.

Media release

From the start of the WA Open at Joondalup Resort in Perth today through until the Tour finale in mid-March, the Tour’s Summer of Golf will visit five states as well as New Zealand, adding to the tournaments in Papua New Guinea and Northern Territory which have already been completed.

The total Challenger PGA Tour of the Australasia schedule offers more than $9 million in prizemoney as the Tour continues to breed the region’s next generation of champion golfers.

Aligned with today’s schedule announcement at The Australian Golf Club is the release of the Tour’s new promotional campaign, titled ‘The Chase Is On’, which focuses on the intense challenge to improve your position in the professional game, highlighted by the race to be at the top of the season-long Order of Merit and the global rewards that come with earning that achievement.

The Tour’s 2023/24 schedule includes two new events – the Webex Players Series South Australia hosted by Greg Blewett, with its unique mixed format, at Willunga Golf Course in October and the Heritage Classic at The Heritage Golf and Country Club in Melbourne in January.

Webex Players Series Sydney hosted by Braith Anasta also has a new home at Castle Hill Country Club in north-west Sydney.

For the Tour, today’s schedule announcement builds on the momentum which has been achieved on a number of fronts, including:

Signing a new three-year naming rights partnership with Australian financial investment firm Challenger; Establishing its player pathway to catapult Australasian golfers onto the global golf stage; Live broadcasts of almost all tournaments via Fox Sports and Kayo, with Nine and Nine Now also simulcasting the two Australian majors; The country’s biggest names committing to play in its biggest tournaments.

PGA of Australia CEO Gavin Kirkman said: “Our Tour is all about ‘the chase’, which is why our new campaign resonates so strongly for me. Our players are chasing titles and prizemoney, exemptions into future events on our Tour and eventually for the opportunity to ply their trade across the globe against the world’s best.

“There is just so much on the line.

“We’re very excited to be travelling all around Australia and New Zealand for 18 exciting events this year, with the third event on the calendar starting today with the WA Open at Joondalup. “It’s going to be a Summer of Golf to remember.”

PGA of Australia Commercial Director Michael McDonald said: “As we commence our 2023/24 Summer of Golf broadcasts with a schedule of tournaments locked in across five states in Australia and New Zealand, we can’t wait to showcase the best talent in our region on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia.

“Our growth in live broadcast content along with golf’s ability to connect directly with our fans – many of whom also participate across a variety of golf formats – has led to an opportunity to work with Challenger, and we are excited to grow this partnership.”

Challenger CEO Nick Hamilton said: “Our team at Challenger is excited to see the reveal of the first Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia schedule and look forward to a wonderful Summer of Golf.

“Together with the Tour, we want to continue to elevate the sport of golf and inspire young golfers to chase their dreams on and off the golf course.”

PGA of Australia General Manager of Tournaments and Global Tour Relations Nick Dastey said: “There is a fantastic field battling it out at this week’s WA Open as the chase for the Order of Merit heats up, again offering the top three players a spot on the DP World Tour, along with a raft of other playing opportunities around the world.

“With 16 tournaments yet to be played on our schedule over the next seven months, we’re looking forward to seeing what new talents emerge and what our established stars bring to courses around Australia and New Zealand.”

Eight Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia events will be played in the lead-up to the end of the year, including the two Aussie majors – the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship and the ISPS HANDA Australian Open.

At the start of 2024, there will be another eight events as the chase for the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit reaches its conclusion, highlighted by the New Zealand Open presented by Sky Sports.

DP World Tour and ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia announce extension to Strategic Alliance

Aus Logos2

  • Partnership will help increase pathways for Australasian players
  • Fortinet Australian PGA Championship Co-Sanctioning Partnership confirmed through to 2026
  • Increased prize money for a range ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia events
  • DP World Tour also has PGA TOUR and Sunshine Tour as strategic partners

The DP World Tour and ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia (PGATA) are delighted to jointly announce an extension of their Strategic Alliance through until 2026 and to announce that the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship will be returning to Brisbane’s Royal Queensland Golf Club as part of the DP World Tour in late 2022.    The existing strategic partnership, announced in 2017, has provided a range of benefits for PGATA Members including important pathways to global golf tours. PGATA members will benefit from this extension through additional opportunities that strengthen current pathways such as two additional tour cards and a range of other additional exemptions on the DP World Tour. This agreement also reaffirms a joint commitment to the continued growth of the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia as will be seen through an increase in prize money for a range of tournaments.   The announcement was made on the eve of this week’s Fortinet Australian PGA Championship in Brisbane, an event which will also be played later in 2022 when it will be co-sanctioned by the PGATA and the DP World Tour, having last featured on the DP World Tour’s schedule at the start of the 2020 season due to the global pandemic. It will be part of the DP World Tour’s 2023 schedule with an increased prize fund of AUD$2million – up from AUD$1million for this week’s event – underlining the event’s position as Australasia’s richest golf tournament and providing playing opportunities for both memberships.    Today’s expansion of the partnership between the DP World Tour and the PGATA reflects Australasia as a key part of global golf’s ecosystem. As a region that accounts for less than 0.4% of the world’s population, it has produced an amazing array of talented golfers, including 19 Men’s Major winners, three World Number Ones and more than 250 wins on the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR.    Five Australasian players finished 2021 inside the top 50 on the Official World Golf Rankings, with Australians Lucas Herbert and Min Woo Lee winning back-to-back events in July on the European Tour – now named the DP World Tour – the former claiming the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open and the latter securing his first Rolex Series victory at the abrdn Scottish Open.    The DP World Tour has played 42 events in Australasia since its inaugural visit in 1996.   The PGA TOUR, the DP World Tour’s Strategic Alliance partner and long-time friend of the PGATA, also fully supports this renewed strategic partnership and the positive benefits it will bring to global golf.   Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the European Tour group, said: “Our Tour has a strong historical association with Australasia, and I’m delighted this extension to our Strategic Alliance with the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia will build upon that heritage.   “Alongside our partnerships with the PGA TOUR and the Sunshine Tour, this new agreement will continue to strengthen the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia and the region’s place in global golf’s ecosystem, providing clearly defined routes for players from Australasia to compete on the biggest stage as well as playing opportunities for DP World Tour members.”   Rodger Davis, Chairman of the PGA of Australia, said: “This partnership is a great acknowledgement of the contribution that our members have made to the overall growth of global golf.   “We are delighted to continue our association with the DP World Tour and provide greater opportunities for our players. Australasia has produced exceptional golfers over a long-sustained period of time and we are delighted to play our part in continuing this legacy on global tours through the development of players from our region.”   Gavin Kirkman, CEO of the PGA of Australia, said: “We are excited to extend our relationship with the DP World Tour and provide a range of great benefits and opportunities for our members and fans.   “Australasian players currently hold over 110 tour cards outside of our region and play an important role in the continued success of global golf tours. This partnership ensures these all-important development opportunities for players on the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia and means that Australasian golf fans can continue to support and cheer their homegrown players on the world stage.”   PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said: “The PGA of Australia has been a great partner of the PGA TOUR and has been instrumental in the success of the three playings of the Presidents Cup in Australia to date. We look forward to actively working to further cultivate and promote professional golf with this partnership going forward.”   The DP World Tour will recommence its 2022 season later this month with back-to-back Rolex Series events, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship at Yas Links, Abu Dhabi from January 20-23 and the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic at Emirates Golf Club from January 27-30.

Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray dies aged 30, the day after withdrawing from event

Sport Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray dies aged 30, the day after withdrawing from event

Grayson Murray plays a shot

Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray died Saturday morning at age 30, one day after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Cup Challenge at Colonial.

There were no immediate details on the circumstances of his death, only shock and grief from the PGA Tour and his management team.

"I am at a loss for words," PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said.

"The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones."

His management company, GSE Worldwide, confirmed the death and said it was heartbroken.

"We will hold off on commenting until we learn further details, but out heart aches for his family, his friends and all who loved him during this very difficult time," GSE said in a statement.

Monahan said he spoke with Murray's parents to offer condolences, and they asked that the tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, continue.

He said grief counsellors would be on site at the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour event. Monahan said he was headed to Texas.

Murray, who had dealt with alcohol and mental issues in the past, made a massive turnaround this year and won the Sony Open, hitting wedge to three feet for birdie on the final hole to get into a playoff and winning it with a 40-foot putt.

He also won the Barbasol Championship in 2017.

Murray, who was number 58 in the world ranking, was coming off a tie for 43rd in the PGA Championship last week at Valhalla.

He also made the cut in his Masters debut, finishing 51st, and was in the field for the US Open next month at Pinehurst number two.

Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray has died at the age of 30, golf officials announced on Sunday morning.

The star’s parents revealed a few hours later that he died by suicide.

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,” Eric and Terry Murray said in a statement.

“It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare.”

The couple said they have “so many questions that have no answers”.

“But one.“Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and — it seems — by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and will be missed,” the statement continued.

“We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of gold for the outpouring of support.

“Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now.

“Please respect out privacy as we work through this incredible tragedy, and please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else.”

Murray previously talked openly about battling depression and alcoholism, and he had recently been in the midst of a career resurgence, The NY Post reports.

After winning the Sony Open in January, Murray said that he had been sober for eight months.

“We were devastated to learn — and are heartbroken to share — that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement.

“I am at a loss for words. The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same.

“We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones. I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so.

“As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes. The PGA Tour has grief counsellors available at both tournament sites, as well as virtually for those not in the field. I am en route to Fort Worth and will share more information when we can.”

Murray won the Sony Open this past January as well as Barbasol Championship in 2017.

After the Sony Open win in Hawaii, an emotional Murray discussed the hard fight he had with mental issues and finding happiness and admitted he had considered suicide.“It’s not easy,” he said. “I wanted to give up a lot of times. Give up on myself. Give up on the game of golf. Give up on life, at times.”

Murray also praised his fiancée, Christiana Ritchie and Jesus, for giving him love and support during the hard times.

“When you get tired of fighting, let someone else fight for you. … I hope everyone at home watching can get a little inspiration from it. If I can just help one person, that’s all it takes … I knew today was not going to change my life, but it did change my career, and I’m excited.”

He had also been open earlier about battling depression and alcohol issues throughout his career, and said in 2023 that he had gotten sober.

“I just thought I was a failure,” he said. “I thought I had a lot of talent that was just a waste of talent.”

After playing collegiately at Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State, Murray turned pro in 2015.

Including his two PGA Tour wins, Murray had 10 top-10 finishes.

CBS announcer Jim Nantz became emotional while announcing the news during the third round of the Charles Schwab Challenge on Saturday.

“I just want to say that the Tour did offer to the [Murray] family to stop play, right here basically at the top of the hour,” Nantz said on the broadcast. “The family was adamant that Grayson and the family wants the tournament to go on. Grayson Murray, gone way too soon, at the age of 30.

“It’s a sad day on the PGA tour. And somehow, with heavy hearts, we’re gonna cover a golf tournament after a break. We’re gonna cover it, we’re gonna try as best we can, be as respectful as we can in our tone and in our hearts.”

The golfing world is in shock and struggling to comprehend the sudden death of two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray.

The arrest of Scottie Scheffler on his way to the PGA Championships has taken a turn with a police officer involved being reprimanded.

A streak stretching back to 2001 is in jeopardy for the Australian star who knows what he has to do to keep it alive.

The parents of professional golfer Grayson Murray on Sunday said the two-time PGA Tour winner died by suicide Saturday morning.

"We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone," Eric and Terry Murray said in a statement. "It's surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It's a nightmare.

"... Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now."

Grayson Murray, 30, withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial after the 16th hole of Friday's second round in Fort Worth, Texas. The PGA Tour cited the reason as illness.

"We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes," his parents said in their statement. "By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and -- it seems -- by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed.

"We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support. Please respect our privacy as we work through this incredible tragedy, and please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else."

Many players competing at Colonial on Sunday wore black-and-red pins on their caps in honor of Murray. Those are the colors of the Carolina Hurricanes , his favorite NHL team.

"Obviously it was pretty difficult to come play golf," said Scottie Scheffler , who tied for second at Colonial. "But like his parents said, he would have wanted the tournament to continue."

Murray spoke about alcohol and mental health in the past, saying he used to drink during tournament weeks as a rookie because he knew he had talent and believed he was invincible. He made a massive turnaround this year and won the Sony Open, hitting a wedge to 3 feet for birdie on the final hole to get into a playoff and winning it with a 40-foot putt.

"It took me a long time to get to this point," Murray said in January. "That was seven years ago, over seven years ago. I'm a different man now. I would not be in this position right now today if I didn't put that drink down eight months ago."

He also won the Barbasol Championship as a 22-year-old PGA Tour rookie in 2017.

Murray, who was No. 58 in the world ranking, was coming off a tie for 43rd in the PGA Championship last week at Valhalla. He also made the cut in his Masters debut, finishing 51st, and was in the field for next month's U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

Murray, who grew up in North Carolina, was among the most talented juniors in the country. He won the prestigious Junior World championship in San Diego three straight years and earned the Arnold Palmer Scholarship at Wake Forest.

His first coach was Ted Kiegiel in North Carolina, who like so many others was devastated.

"Words cannot express the tragedy of this moment," Kiegiel said in a statement sent to The Associated Press. "Grayson came from something that was ordinary and made it EXTRAORDINARY. ... He burned bright for the 30 years he gave us."

Murray wound up going to three colleges, lastly at Arizona State.

Murray said when he won the Sony Open in January that he had been sober for eight months, was engaged to be married and believed his best golf was ahead of him. He was appointed to the PGA Tour's 16-member player advisory council the same month.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, who flew to Texas on Saturday, said grief counselors were on site at the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour event.

"To be in the locker room, to see the devastation on the faces of every player that's coming in, it's really difficult to see. And really just profound," Monahan said during the CBS broadcast Saturday.

"Grayson was a remarkable player on the PGA Tour, but he was a very courageous man, as well. And I've always loved that about him, and I know that the locker room is filled with people that really will take that away when they think about Grayson."
