Isla de Ometepe: An Epic Guide to Nicaragua’s Ometepe Island

Isla de Ometepe Island Nicaragua Central America

Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links. All hosted affiliate links follow our editorial policies .

Located in the southwestern corner of its namesake country, Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake in Central America. It’s also home to one of the region’s most remarkable islands .

Isla de Ometepe (a.k.a. Ometepe Island) was formed by two towering volcanoes that dominate the landscape. Volcan Maderas– the smaller of the two at 4500-plus feet– is now dormant, but the larger Concepcion Volcano (5250+ feet) has erupted regularly since 1880.

The islands of Ometepe are joined by an isthmus called Istián, which was formed millions of years ago after an eruption.

As of 2010, the island of Ometepe has been declared a protected  UNESCO Biosphere Reserve . It’s highly regarded for its wetlands and tropical rainforests , which are rich in Spanish cedar and other evergreens.

The fertile forests on the volcanoes’ slopes are considered to have the highest conservation value of anything in Nicaragua. The different elevations are inhabited by several intriguing species of plants and animals, including White-headed Capuchins, Yellow-naped Parrots, and guayabón fruit trees.

If natural splendor is on your agenda, Ometepe Island should rank high on your bucket list. Not only is the island a stunning visual anomaly with those volcanoes standing high above the lake, but it’s also home to a host of things to do.

An array of cycling and hiking trails , natural swimming holes, kayaking and canoe trips, eco-lodges, and specialized fincas add to the inherent magic of Ometepe. It’s safe, secluded, and still very rich with the pristine natural beauty that originally made it such an attractive place for natives to settle (and pirates to plunder).

While the island is open for business year-round, the best time to visit Ometepe depends on your traveler preferences. The low season for tourism is from May to October: Rain can be expected daily, but prices drop, crowds lessen, and the sunshine peaks through regularly.

The shoulder seasons in April and November have lighter rain and more visitors, but there are still good deals to be found. The peak tourist season– December through March– offers perfect weather in Ometepe, but accommodation and transportation become more expensive and book up fast.

Whenever the time is right for you, the island holds a treasure trove of nature, outdoor adventure, and traditional Nicaraguan culture to be explored .

HISTORY OF ISLA DE OMETEPE

How to get to ometepe island, top 10 things to do in ometepe, the best hotels in ometepe.

The name Ometepe derives from Nahuati , an indigenous language spoken by the Aztecs, with ome meaning two and tepetl meaning mountain. The two mountains, or volcanoes, form the largest island in Lake Nicaragua, which was historically known as Cocibolca . The island is nearly 20 miles long and up to six miles wide, and has been inhabited since 2000 BC.

The first suspected inhabitants of the island arrived during the Dinarte phase, from 2000 BC to 500 BC. But the Nahua people from Mexico are the first officially recognized inhabitants of Ometepe, followed by the Niquirano people.

Petroglyphs and idols from these indigenous peoples still remain on the Maderas (dormant) side of the island, with the oldest dating back to the third century BC. The Chorotega, the most powerful tribe from northwest Costa Rica , also settled the island and left basalt carvings.

In the late 1990s, the Ometepe Petroglyph Project discovered over 1700 petroglyphs in 73 different sites in the Maderas area. Spirals and turtles are among the more common motifs, as well as anthropomorphic figures and humans with “bowling ball faces.”

The Ometepe Archaeological Project now claims over 2000 petroglyphs and/or modified boulders over 110 different  ancient archaeological sites . In other words, ancient history runs deep on the island of Ometepe, and there is still plenty of it around to view.

The fertility of the volcanic soil and safety of the lake attracted indigenous people, but colonialism brought serious strife. After the Spanish conquered Central America in the 1500s, pirates used the San Juan River to come into Lake Nicaragua, where they kidnapped women, stole food, and started new settlements.

The native population moved further up the slopes of the volcanoes for safety. By the end of the 16th century, conquistadors had settled the island. Today, the population of Isle de Ometepe includes well-intentioned expats and villages of indigenous people who have mixed colonial Catholicism with many local religious traditions.

As a result, the island has more festivals than any other place in Nicaragua. The most important population centers are Moyogalpa, on the western side of Volcan Concepcion, and Altagracia on the eastern side of it.

How to get to Ometepe Island Nicaragua

When you’re visiting a small island , the logistics of getting there are more difficult than destinations with large airports and road access.

The Ometepe ferry used to be the only way to reach the island, but they’ve recently begun to offer a few flights a week from Managua.

But unless your time is really short, the boat ride is highly recommended, as the vista of the volcanoes from the lake is spectacular.

Getting From Granada to Ometepe

There used to be a ferry to Ometepe from Granada at the northern side of Lake Nicaragua, and from San Carlos by the mouth of the San Juan River at the south side of the lake. The San Carlos route was a fun way to cross the border into Costa Rica .

However, these ferries were shut down due to low water levels– possibly temporarily, but possibly permanently. So while they could be options in the future, they’re not now. When these ferries did run, the trips were only available a couple days a week and with rather awkward timing.

So the more recommended route from Granada to Ometepe is to travel overland to Rivas and catch the Ometepe ferry there.

Ometepe Island Ferry

Ometepe Ferry: San Jorge to Moyogalpa

The quickest, most regular, and reliable ferry to Ometepe Island is the one that runs between San Jorge (Rivas) and Moyogalpa, the largest of the island’s ferry ports.

Shuttles or buses from Granada will get you to Rivas, which links the Pacific coast beaches, Ometepe, and Granada on northward.

From Rivas, you can take another bus or a taxi to get to San Jorge. San Jorge is the nearby port from which boats leave for the island. Ometepe ferries depart San Jorge hourly or even more frequently, and the return from Moyogalpa is the same.

The ferry ride takes a little over an hour. Once you arrive in Moyogalpa, there are shuttles, taxis, or buses to get visitors to whichever village they want to visit.

Flights to Ometepe

In 2014, a tiny airport was opened in Isle de Ometepe. Now La Costeña Airlines offers flights to the island twice a week, on Thursday and Sunday.

You can board a 12-seater plane that goes from Managua to Ometepe, and on to San Carlos, San Juan del Norte, and back again in the same day.

These flights are fairly inexpensive, pricing in at around $50 USD. But again, you’ll miss the stunning scenic views of the volcanoes that come from taking the Ometepe ferry.

The island of Ometepe is a wonderful place for relaxing in Nicaragua. But it also offers plenty of outdoor recreational opportunities, abundant nature, and some cultural highlights. There’s lots of wildlife, thousands of petroglyphs, and volcanoes. Here’s a look at some of my favorite things to do in the area:

Ometepe Island -Concepción Volcano

1) Hike Up Concepción  Volcano

At over 5,000 feet high, Volcan Concepción is the second largest volcano in all of Nicaragua. Its conical shape makes it picture-perfect, but it’s bald at the top bald due to activity.

The last eruption here was back in 1957, but it belched out a huge ash cloud in 2010. What could be more thrilling than hiking up an active volcano?

There is a challenging, 10-mile (roughly 10-hour) hike up Concepción. Having a guide is mandatory, and tours tend to include entrance into the park as well as a pack lunch. The hike goes from almost sea level to the volcano’s summit, and most of the trail is completely out in the sunshine.

That said, the elevation makes the upper reaches cold and windy. In other words, doing this requires real fitness, sun protection, and a wind breaker. Only about 25% of all hikers make it to the summit.

Things to do in Isla de Ometepe Nicaragua - Hike through the Cloud Forest

2) Climb  Volcano Maderas

The cone of the Maderas Volcano exploded in an eruption several thousand years ago. In its wake, large lava boulders were left along the mountains truncated slopes.

The crater is now a beautiful tropical lagoon in which overheated hikers can swim. The volcano is covered in dense cloud forest, with incredible orchids, ferns, bromeliads, and lichens. Additionally, monkeys and birds call out from the trees.

There are three hiking trails leading up to the summit, from Balgüe, Santa Cruz, and Merida. The trail from Balgüe is the most popular one, and it takes about eight hours round-trip.

Unlike Concepción, Maderas is completely covered in canopy. The trail is notoriously muddy from the humidity, which begs that hikers carry plenty of water and wear quality hiking boots . Hikers should also travel with an experienced guide to make the ascent.

El Ojo de Agua on Isla de Ometepe Nicaragua

3) Swim in El Ojo de Agua

In terms of natural springs in the middle of the jungle, Ometepe’s Ojo de Agua (Eye of Water) is a really nice one. It gets to about six feet deep, and is nearly 100 feet long.

Flowing underground from Volcan Maderas, the water is clear and clean, with an upper pool emptying into the lower one. On one side of the pools, the jungle borders the water, offering up-close chances to see wildlife. A whole troop of monkeys hung around for about 20 minutes during my visit.

Though serene and beautiful, the spot can become overcrowded with swimmers at times. It has a large restaurant, but bringing in your own picnic is permitted as well. There are plenty of deck chairs to rent, and the entrance is only a few dollars.

El Ojo de Agua is located between Altagracia and Playa Santo Domingo, and easily reached easily by bus.

Petroglyph from Museo El Cibo, Ometepe, Nicaragua

4) Visit The Petroglyphs

There are many options for checking out pre-Colombian petroglyphs on Ometepe Island. These carvings, as well as statues and other artifacts of early indigenous people, can be found all over the island in situ.

There are many private museums in Ometepe as well. El Ceibo Museum, which is located in the Charco Verde area of the island, is one notable example, as is the museum in Altagracia.

With regards to seeing the stones (and carvings) where they lie, the Maderas side of the island is your best bet, and Finca Magdalena and Hotel Finca Porvenir are great spots to start.

On the eastern side of Maderas, Tichana has ancient cave paintings. Additionally, San Silvestre is an important archeological site with four large, unearthed statues. It’s really amazing to see where this priceless Latin American art has remained for centuries.

Kayaking around Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua

5) Kayak Lake Nicaragua & Istián River

The Rio Istián is Ometepe’s most noteworthy canoeing and kayaking experience.

It’s more like a wetland than a true river, with the waters moving slowly into the isthmus. This creates an ideal habitat for water birds and other exciting wildlife, such as Caiman (the smaller, less aggressive relatives of crocodiles). Monkeys can also be seen in feeding the large trees that overhang the river.

The paddling tour begins in the village of Merida and takes about four hours, including an hour of kayaking across a portion of Lake Nicaragua.

For those who are less inclined to paddle for fitness, there are motorized options that will pull your kayak across the lake portion of the tour. If you’re not into canoeing or kayaking at all, there is a hiking trail from Playa Santo Domingo that visits the upper end of the Rio Istián.

Isla de Ometepe - San Ramon Waterfall

6) Hike to the San Ramon Waterfall

Starting at the biological station in San Ramon, there is a nice hike to a splendid waterfall that drops from the edge of Maderas and plummets down a moss-covered rockface.

The hike in from the station takes about two hours and leads hikers by a hydro-electric plant. The trail leading to the waterfalls passes through jungle laden with birds, monkeys, and butterflies. The flora is thick with bromeliads, moss, and vines. At the bottom of the falls, there is a small pool you can swim in.

While most definitely a worthwhile venture at any time, the falls are most spectacular during Ometepe’s rainy season or shortly thereafter. Near the end of the dry season, around March, there is sometimes little more than a thin strip of water running down the cliff.

Things to do on Isla de Ometepe

7) Visit Project Bona Fide

Sustainable living is a big part of the vibe that draws visitors to Isla Ometepe.

Many of the island’s hostels and hotels have accompanying agricultural projects that supply some of the food they and nearby restaurants serve, including fruits, vegetables, eggs, coffee and meat. Most offer guided walking tours of their farms and gardens .

For a more significant look at sustainability in action, visit the world-renowned permaculture site at  Project Bona Fide , which is located near the village of Balgüe.

Visits and tours must be arranged beforehand, but the farm provides a real glimpse at how environmentally-friendly agriculture and living looks in the tropics. Permaculture design courses are frequently offered there as well.

Petroglyphs on Ometepe Island - Finca Magdalena

8) Explore Finca Magdalena

Not far from Project Bona Fide is  Finca Magdalena . This magical farm spans over 850 acres, nearly half of which is forested, and directed by a collective of two dozen partners and their families.

This agricultural utopia offers lodging, dining, camping , and guided tours. Coffee, honey, bananas, milk, and a mix of vegetables are grown and produced organically on the premises.

Also reached via Balgüe, Finca Magdalena’s tours include climbing Volcano Maderas, hiking to a waterfall, exploring the farm, checking out petroglyphs, and visiting the coffee plantation.

Inexpensive, family-friendly rooms are available for rent, and the restaurant (and surrounding garden) is open to walk-in visitors.

Cycle Around Ometepe

9) Cycle Around Ometepe

The paths around Ometepe Island are low on traffic and high on beauty, which makes them a perfect place for cycling.

The roadways circle the entire island, creating a figure eight around both volcanoes, and lush jungle overhangs much of the route. You can take short trips from village to village, or ride completely around the island if you’ve got the legs, stamina, and willpower.

Bikes are available for rent in just about every Ometepe village, but do should be aware that the island’s hilly terrain can be challenging for infrequent riders. Nevertheless, for every trip up a hill, there is a coast down to give you time to cool off.

Riding a bike provides a completely different experience of the island. The route between Moyogalpa and Altagracia (which is 15 miles one way) is arguably the most popular one for cycling.

Volunteer on Ometepe Island

10) Volunteer in Local Communities

Isla Ometepe offers many different opportunities for volunteering.

Probably the most popular for tourists– and backpackers in particular– is to do work-stay volunteering on one of the local farms. This essentially involves putting in a day’s work (usually more like half a day) in exchange for lodging and meals, with plenty of spare time for exploring the island.

That said, there are ample opportunities to volunteer within the local communities as well. The Rainforest Alliance-certified Hacienda Merida helps to fund Fundacion Ometepe , a non-profit that constructs schools, brings medical volunteers and medicine to local clinics, and more.

They offer volunteer opportunities as well as accommodation, camping , a breakfast and dinner buffet, and tours, all with an environmentally and socially conscious motif.

Ometepe Island

Table of Contents

The word Ometepe is derived from the Aztec language meaning two mountains and the name could not be more befitting for this island in Lake Nicaragua. This island was formed when two volcanoes, Concepcion and Maderas, rose from the waters of the lake and are now connected by a small isthmus that gives the island an hourglass-shaped when view from high above.

Ometepe is currently one of the destinations admired by both local and international tourists for its nature, hospitality, beautiful landscapes, the two volcanoes, a rich archeological background, relaxing beaches and its numerous natural reserves and forests that enjoy high biodiversity.

For ages, the island has represented a paradisiacal destination. According to stories obtained by historians, indigenous tribes traveled from up north to find a paradise as foreseen in a vision by their prophets; a place formed by two hills which they found at Ometepe while traveling down south. The island consequently transformed into a sanctuary inhabited by a mix of different tribes and cultures – something that is revealed by the immense number of petroglyphs, ceramics, and statues that can be found all throughout the island.

The island is currently inhabited by friendly people who love their territory, dedicated to fishing and high-quality agricultural production which is made possible by the fertile soil. More recently, the ometepinos (inhabitants of Ometepe Island) have started to attend tourists and nowadays the island houses numerous establishments offering lodging, food, tours, and other services that enable tourists from all over the world to visit and explore this paradise.

Below we will explain the principal tourist destination of Ometepe Island:

Ojo de Agua

The water from this natural pool, known under the name of Ojo de Agua, comes directly from the Concepción Volcano. Because it is volcanic water, it is very rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, sulfur, and sodium. All those chemical components have properties that help diminishing fever, muscular pain, stress, some allergies, and some people say that they even help rejuvenate!

Charco Verde Natural Reserve

Continuing the road to Altagracia, you will pass by the natural reserve of Charco Verde located at kilometer 11. The reserve houses a hill, a lagoon separated from the lake by only a narrow strip of land, and spectacular flora and fauna. Furthermore, this area is famous throughout the whole Ometepe for its fascinating myths.

Punta Jesus Maria

Punta Jesus Maria is the most western point of Ometepe. A narrow strip of sand stretches out into Lake Nicaragua, which can reach as far as 1 kilometer into the lake during the dry season. You can walk on this strip of sand, with water splashing in from both the left and the right. During the raining season, however, the water level of the lake rises and this strip of sand can totally disappear.

El Ceibo Museum

The pre-Columbian collection: consisting of about 3,000 pieces, some more than 5,000 years old, which is divided into several exhibition halls organized by themes: Funeral Urns Room, where different types of funeral urns used by the ancestors of the Island of Ometepe are displayed, with a faithful reproduction of a tomb of a Shaman, with the original objects, the bones and a gold piece of the shaman.

Ceramic Room, where a huge collection of ceramics is displayed in chronological order, where you can see perfectly the artistic evolution of the villagers for hundreds of years.Stone Room, where tools, grinding stones, and petroglyphs are displayed.

The total duration of this tour is approx. 13 hours with transportation time , it might take longer if unexpected reasons show up such as weather conditions or some others that are not mentioned above but that affects the itinerary.

Top Activities on Ometepe Island

Volcano climbing.

As you first set foot on Ometepe, whether arriving by plane or ferry, your gaze inevitably turns upwards to behold the twin volcanoes. Often shrouded in mist, they present a dramatic spectacle, reminiscent of scenes from old King Kong movies. On clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of the wisps of volcanic gases drifting from Concepción’s crater.

Our journey to Ometepe began with a plane ride from the south, affording us the rare opportunity to fly around the rim of Concepción’s crater during our descent. It was a breathtaking welcome to the island.

Volcán Concepción, Ometepe Island Nicaragua

You can climb both volcanoes. Guides are available for both and highly recommended.

Climbing Maderas Volcano

Maderas stands at 1,394 meters, and while it is an easier climb than Concepción due to the established cloud forest, it is still by no means an easy feat.

Climbing Time

Expect a 6 – 8 hour round trip to the top of Maderas volcano.

Volcano Climbing Ometepe Island Nicaragua

Climbing Concepción Volcano

Concepción stands at 1610 meters high, a steep climb up mostly loose rock and scree. When we climbed, there had been severe landslides two weeks prior that had ripped down any established growth, upturning and gouging the earth from the base up to around 900 meters.

This could be a factor to be considered at any time when climbing this volcano.

Expect around an 8-11 hour round trip to climb this monolith depending on your fitness levels.

Volcano Climbing Guides

  • Our guide cost USD $20 each for a 10.5-hour climb.
  • A car to take us to the start point of the climb and back in the evening was USD $25.
  • Most of the hotels and hostels should be able to recommend a good guide who will collect you from your accommodation.

If climbing to the top of an active or even prehistoric volcano is not on your bucket list, there are some great hikes around the base of both.

Ometepe, with more than 1700 recorded petroglyphs is famous for its pre-Columbian history and is renown as one of the most significant rock art areas in the world.

Throughout the island, you’ll encounter ancient petroglyphs, stone statues, and idols, alongside sites adorned with ceramic urns and utensils. Legend has it that the ancient Indians regarded Ometepe as their promised land, with Volcano Maderas revered as the sacred abode of the sun and Concepción as the brother of the moon.

Dating back to 1000 BC, the petroglyphs reveal intricate carvings displaying Ometepe Nicaragua, depicting calendars and stones hinting at ancient rituals, possibly including human sacrifice.

These archaeological treasures are scattered across Ometepe and can be easily located on maps or explored further at the Archaeological Museum of La Ceiba, situated in the Charco Verde area.

Hike Through Nature Reserves and Rain Forests

Charco Verde is a 20-hectare ecological reserve, a tropical dry forest which is home to an abundance of wildlife. Within the reserve is the mystical pond of Charco Verde. It has a distinct emerald hue due to an abundance of algae.

Legend states this was the area used by the ancient Indians to make sacrifices to their gods. Marked walks through the reserve will bring you to a beach which offers views across Lake Nicaragua to Maderas and Isla de Quiste.

Charco Verde, Ometepe Island Nicaragua

A hike to The Cascade of San Ramon, a 50-meter waterfall on the southern slope of the Maderas is a 4 hour round trip. It offers great views of Lake Nicaragua. The trails take you through dense jungle where a wide variety of wildlife can be seen.

This is a hike best done during the rainy season, as there will be little water in the peak of the dry season.

Punta Jesus Maria

This narrow spit of sand is formed by water currents and sediment build up. At certain times of the year, the sandbank extends more than a kilometre so that you can stand with water splashing up on either side of you.

From here you have a panoramic view of the island and the two volcanoes. Looking towards the mainland, Volcano Mombacho can be seen. This is also a popular spot for swimming in the calm shallows or watching the sunset.

Discovering the Towns of Ometepe

Venture into the bustling towns of Moyogalpa and Altagracia. Serving as the commercial hub and primary gateway to Ometepe, Moyogalpa is conveniently connected to San Jorge by ferry, just an hour’s ride away. This vibrant metropolis serves as an ideal starting point for exploring Ometepe, offering a variety of accommodations, dining establishments, bars, and essential services. There are some truly amazing places to try in Moyogalpa, with our favorite restaurant being Comedor Julia’s , with delicious and cheap eats!

Concepción provides a constantly changing and always dramatic backdrop to this charming village atmosphere. Moyogalpa is an especially lovely spot to stop for a coffee and watch the Ometepe, Nicaragua world go by.

We emphatically recommend our favorites – Cafe Campestre and El Picante Mexican Restaurant .

One of the most captivating aspects of Ometepe is its warm-hearted people, stunning landscapes, and the peaceful way of life it offers. Here, you can truly disconnect and unwind. Explore the island’s charming villages, where you’ll stumble upon delightful beachside eateries, witness the enduring use of horses and oxen in daily activities, and encounter countless smiling faces eager to welcome you. While Ometepe may not boast luxury amenities, its richness lies in its authentic simplicity and genuine hospitality.

Costs on Ometepe Island

Guided tours on Ometepe Island may come at a slightly higher price compared to other parts of Nicaragua, but they remain affordable. Taxis, however, tend to be pricier due to the elevated fuel costs on the island, with most trips averaging around USD $20.

Fortunately, dining on Ometepe remains budget-friendly, mirroring the inexpensive food prices found elsewhere in Nicaragua. Enjoy a refreshing beer for about USD $1.25 and indulge in a restaurant meal for approximately $5 to $8.

How to Get Around on Ometepe Island

Navigating Ometepe Island can be a leisurely affair, given its primarily sealed main road. However, travel can be slow due to the island’s terrain. If you opt to bring your own car or rent one from the mainland, it’s advisable to choose a high-clearance 4×4 vehicle, especially if you plan to venture off the main route.

For a more nimble option, consider renting a scooter, typically available for around USD $25 to $30 for an 8-hour period. Scooters offer a convenient way to explore most areas of the island, while motorbikes and bicycles are also available for rent.

Alternatively, you can utilize the island’s bus service, which operates between Moyogalpa and Altagracia for approximately USD $2 per trip. However, be prepared for a slower journey, as the bus may take around an hour to cover what should be a half-hour trip.

How to Get To Ometepe

There are Ferries operating daily (except Sundays) from San Jorge (weather dependent) A one hour journey will cost ~ USD $3 per person and ~ USD $25 per person with a car.

There are also ferries operating between Granada (Tues/Fri) and San Carlos, Rio San Juan (Mon/Thurs) that stop at Ometepe (Altagracia) twice weekly. This is an overnight ferry ~ 11 hours San Carlos- Ometepe.

A 1st class ticket costs around $9 ($4-second class).  This gives you access to the AC cabin on the 1st class deck where you can watch TV, or hang your hammock (if you have one). There is no sleeping accommodation on the vessel.

La Costeña Airlines operate flights to Ometepe from Managua and San Carlos on Thursday and Sunday. Expect ~USD $50 for a one way ticket.

Where To Stay on Ometepe.

Ometepe has many accommodation options with a lot more high end options starting to emerge. We stayed at The Eco Lodge El Porvenir in Santa Cruz which is pretty indicative of the hotel options on the island. For USD $20/night we had a basic but comfortable double room with ensuite and a spectacular view of Volcán Concepción.

Ometepe Island Nicaragua

They had a great restaurant and bar serving excellent meals at very reasonable prices. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They arranged tours, cars, bike hire and taxis for us with absolute ease and professionalism.

Besides The Eco Lodge, another amazing hotel we stayed at was Hotel Victoria . At Hotel Victoria, guests can enjoy rooms with a charming patio offering scenic mountain views. Each room is equipped with a flat-screen TV for entertainment, and select rooms even feature a refreshing pool view. Bed linen and towels are provided in every room for added comfort.

Above all, we truly enjoyed our time in Ometepe and we know that our readers will enjoy it too!

It’s fun to come to Ometepe Island across Lake Nicaragua, particularly the final approach displaying the full grandeur of Ometepe’s two iconic and ethereal volcanoes: Concepion is the larger, has a symmetrical cone, is active and periodically spews ash; Maderas is smaller and greener, wrapped in a thick cloud forest full of butterflies and flowers. At dusk exotic birds chatter away.

Ideally one needs few days to capture the natural and cultural magic of the island and to cover its must-do’s: Spend time in the excellent Ometepe Museum with an excellent display of archaeological artifacts in the pretty town of Altagracia; hike the trails of the Reserva Charco Verde, where the jungle rolls down to the black volcanic beach and offers excellent birdwatching and kayaking around the bay; starting at dawn, climb (four-hours and for the physically fit) the Maderas Volcano, crowned by a beautiful crater lake with a waterfall spilling down its western wall.

Scattered around the island—principally on the north and northeastern slopes of Maderas Volcano— are statues and petroglyphs carved around the year 300 B.C. that paid homage to the ancient gods of the Nahuatl people from Mexico who settled here. Altagracia, which has fine views of Concepion Volcano and a park displaying some of the most famous pre-Columbian statues in Nicaragua, are several pretty fresh-water beaches—Santo Domingo is one— with choices lodgings. And on this figure-eight shaped island, the Isthmus of Istiam sits at the center, a lowland finger connecting the two volcanoes round bases; here are several lagoons and creeks offering primetime birdwatching and kayaking.

Getting there: While there is now twice-weekly air service to Ometepe, the easiest and most scenic access to the Island is by boat or ferry from San Jorge on the mainland, a one-hour ride on Lake Nicaragua to Moyogalpa port-town on the west side of the island.

Ometepe Island Tour

Rising proudly from the waters of Lake Nicaragua (the world's largest freshwater lake), Ometepe Island  is made up of two magnificent volcanic cones and is a more than impressive sight as you gaze across to its shores.

Consisting of 276 square kilometres of unspoiled forest frequented by monkeys, armadillo, opossum and deer — on a clear day the views are simply spectacular. The lake crossing can be choppy but is a well worthwhile and wonderful trip.

The word Ometepe developed from the original Aztecs' name for the island, Ome Tepelth, which means two hills. These days it has a population of 35,000, but the remnants of this ancient civilisation can be seen in petroglyphs around the island.

The people of Ometepe are said to be the kindest in Nicaragua, mainly because the civil wars never reached the island and it is a charming insight into times gone past, with tiny villages, unpaved roads and locals riding ox-carts.

There are two main villages of note. The busy port of Moyogalpa where you will arrive on the island and Altagracia to the northern side of Concepcion which is more charming.

You have a tour of the highlights of the island before ending with lunch at a local hotel. In the afternoon you will retrace your steps back across the lake and transfer onward from San Jorge.

Offbeat Ometepe: An Itinerary for 2024 with Hidden Gems

Today, I’ve got a secret to share about my favorite island on Earth, a perfect jewel set in Southern Nicaragua’s vast Lake Nicaragua.

Ometepe Island (or Isla de Ometepe in Spanish) is one of the most magical places I’ve ever been to and it tends to leave a deep impression on most people who journey there. Let me paint a picture for you: Volcanoes, Fireflies, Jungle, Cacao, and an opportunity to challenge yourself in the midst of the Nicaraguan jungle.

I  came across this island, fresh into my first solo backpacking trip and was mesmerized by the sheer abundance I found … Fireflies flitting upon the evening wind, freshwater sharks patrolling the clear lake bed, birds of every color welcoming the first warm rays of dawn. But it is not just the beautiful views, adventure activities, friendly communities and ancient culture that draws people from all over the world to visit Ometepe, it’s also a spiritual hub and it is here that many people come on journeys of self reflection and growth.

So to help you best experience everything this island has to offer, I’ve put together this 3-day Ometepe Island itinerary that focuses on the must-sees and those often-overlooked hidden gems.

Let’s get into it!

A Little Bit About this 3-Day Ometepe Itinerary

Every travel experience is unique.

Some people prefer adventures, or guided tours while others enjoy the thrill of journeying the off-beat path or being one of very few travelers in a country like Pakistan. Personally, I like to travel with growth, meaning, and a spiritual component in mind. I really get a lot out of a soul-searching adventure. Backpacking Ometepe is perfect for travelers looking to learn more about themselves. There is something truly powerful and poignant about this island that carries a hidden magic.

A whisper, to remember who you are and why you came to earth. A gentle smile from the trees, happy to see that you came. An invitation to challenge yourself, from the ancient and wise volcanoes that have stood like watchful sentinels over this land for eons.

Even if you aren’t into all the juju, la Isla de Ometepe has a lot to offer to the adventurous traveler or somebody looking to find a welcoming community.

3-Day Ometepe Itinerary Overview

  • Day 1 in Ometepe: El Pital , Ometepe Rock Carvings
  • Day 2 in Ometepe: Concepción Volcano / Maderas Volcano
  • Day 3 in Ometepe: Playa Santa Cruz

Where To Stay in Ometepe

There are a few good options for where to stay in Ometepe. Abuela’s casita is where the locals hang and there are some great eco-lodge options in Nicaragua .  Due to the island’s relatively small size, you’ll probably be in a pretty good location and not too far away from anything no matter where you choose to base yourself.

Each part of the island has something unique, like a local volcanic spring or trees populated by raucous monkeys. Your pick on where to stay won’t make or break your trip so this is an occasion where you don’t need to massively over plan.

map of ometepe island, nicaragua

Although Moyogalpa is one of the main places people tend to stay out of convenience, I don’t recommend it for the offbeat traveler . This is where the main ferry port is, and most likely where you will arrive when you get to Ometepe. This is a good place to get transportation for your Ometepe adventures and eat some good local food but not to stay (way too crowded).

Balgue is where the hip young crowd tends to hang out (including me). This part of La Isla is remote and full of naked hippies. MY PEOPLE. In all seriousness, this is the place to be. Lots of activities, eco-lodges, and opportunities to meet new people.

Altagracia is the place where you’ll find Ojos de agua (watering holes). This part of the island is beautiful… Really. I loved the drive through the local villages stopping to dip into the flowing streams. Nature lovers will LOVE this area.

If you’re looking for a spot on the island to be in silence and just enjoy the incredible scenery, Meridais where you want to be. This part of the island is known for the local villages and very relaxed atmosphere. Do be aware, that the roads in this part of town are really underdeveloped, so please be careful driving mopeds, it’s easy to take a nasty tumble (I’m speaking from personal experience, more on that later).

Ometepe can also be divided into two sections: One is closest to Concepcion Volcano and the other is known as the Maderas side. Each part has so much to offer, and so many cute posadas to stay at. Below I’ve covered some of my favorite places to stay in Ometepe…

Best place to stay on Ometepe – El Pital, Chocolate Paradise

El Pital

In two words, “Chocolate Paradise” perfectly describes my experience at El Pital. As a chocolate farm eco-lodge, El Pital offers a serene retreat where mornings begin with breathtaking views of the Concepción volcano, days are filled with refreshing swims in the lake, and evenings unwind on the yoga deck. The tranquil surroundings ensure you depart with a sense of zen. Accommodations at El Pital range from private bungalows to shared dormitory options, catering to many different preferences.

Best Budget Homestay on Ometepe – Ananda Guesthouse

Ananda Guesthouse

This guesthouse is a luxurious gem! With stunning views and delicious free breakfast, I have no doubt you’ll love your stay. There are so many activities nearby, including volcano hikes, coffee tours, and options to rent scooters, motorcycles, and ATVs. Plus, it’s just a 10-minute walk to the village of Balgüe, where you’ll find restaurants and small convenience stores.

Best Hostel on Ometepe – El Zopilote

El Zopilote

El Zopilote is perfect for solo travelers visiting Ometepe, offering a special stay with a range of free daily events such as sunset yoga and tours of the permaculture farm. Be sure not to miss out on the lively Friday pizza night. Accommodations at El Zopilote are diverse, ranging from dorm rooms and private rooms to a campsite and budget-friendly hammocks available for under $5. The hostel life here is amazing!

How to Get to Ometepe

You know what they say: the best places are the hardest to get to….Welcome to Ometepe. You’ll start your day by venturing to the ferry port (about an hour from San Juan del Sur) which is a GREAT excuse to have a pit stop for the night in a cute surf town with great vibes.

As far as backpacking Central America goes, spending some time in San Juan del Sur is a must! The ferry is less than $ 5 USD roundtrip and it takes about 45 minutes to get there.

Fun fact – the lake surrounding Ometepe (Lake Nicaragua) is the biggest lake in Central America! Cool, right?

ferry port

Here are a few ways to the ferry port:

  • Take a local Chicken bus.
  • Take a Taxi.
  • Stick out your thumb and hitchhike!!

When I visited Ometepe I took every opportunity I could to hitchhike, I even caught an hour-long ride on a motorcycle on my way out (my proudest moment hitchhiking as a woman to date).

The port is hard to miss, you’ll know it once you’re there. Chances are you’ll see other people backpacking Central America taking on Ometepe too. The port is easy to navigate too, and the locals help tourists navigate the area super well.

Before you get on to the ferry make sure to get a local dish or stock up on some tasty snacks, my favorites were gallo pinto and tostones. The ferry schedule is pretty straightforward, the ferries start to take off at 7 am through 5 pm.

Ometepe Itinerary Day 1: Cacao tours, and Sunset Yoga

Alright friends, we’re finally here, let’s dive into day 1 of what to see and do in Ometepe…

Step 1 .  Rent a scooter

This is by far the easiest way to get around on the island.

Step 2 . Play it safe!

Make sure you are geared up before you ride said scooter… Seriously guys be safe, and always wear a helmet, many adventurous souls have taken a tumble in Ometepe, myself included!

Step 3 . Hit the road road and EXPLORE .

The cool thing about the island is that you can literally see all of it in just a few hours. One road circulates the whole island so it’s easy to get around!

Start the day off at El Pital

El Pital is an eco-community, built on the pillars of yoga, veganism, cacao, and friendship. People come here to soak in some of THE BEST chocolate on the island. They do walking tours throughout the farm, where you get a full rundown and even get a taste of fresh cacao off the tree! After the tour, you can join a yoga class with a view of the Concepción volcano or you can tune in to the infamous cacao ceremonies.

chocolate bar from ometepe island

If you haven’t done a cacao ceremony before, here is what you can expect. Music, prayer, and lots of chocolate. It is a chance to come together with a group of people, set intentions, and get into a meditation led by love.

This is one of my favorite gems on the island. You can buy chocolate milkshakes and swim in the lake while jamming out to tropical music. The playlist is always 10/10…

Insider Tip:

  • Cost : $10-15
  • Getting there :  located in the Balgue district, you can get here by transportation or foot, depending on how far you are.
  • How long should you stay :  a few hours (Bring a book and relax)

In the afternoon: Explore the Ometepe rock carvings

The ancient history around Ometepe is what makes it so special. Hundreds of years ago thousands of rock carvings were found all over the island describing the legends of Ometepe’s beginnings. You can find them all over the island and it’s a really fantastic way to cast one’s eye back and visualize the hands that may have carved these mysterious and beautiful etchings in the rock!

Museo Altagracia is one of the museums you can visit to see the rock carvings. You can even book a guide to help you explore them. The information online for booking is quite limited but rest assured when you get to the island, your hostel will be able to help you sort it out.

a petroglyph on Ometepe island, Nicaragua

If you don’t get a chance to visit the museum, it is very likely you will find the rock carvings around the island, just keep your eyes peeled…Some of the best places to see petroglyphs are at Hotel Finca Porvenir and at Finca Magdalena.

After exploring the history of the island, I recommend making your way to Zopilote for sunset. Zopilote is another eco-community full of workshops, permaculture volunteers, and yoga sessions! I say make your way to Zopilote for a sunset yoga session. This side of the island is known for its free expression and wildness.

Ometepe Itinerary Day 2: For adrenaline junkies

Let’s get straight into it, you can’t go to Ometepe without summiting a volcano , it is an unwritten rule.

Lucky for you, there are two of them to pick from! volcanoes Concepción and Maderas. Both have so much to offer and are very different.

Located on the north side of the island is Concepción Volcano. This volcano is mighty and active!

This trek is for the brave few wanting to take on a challenge. The whole trip takes about 8-12 hours. You can find local guides near the volcano that charge around $30-50 USD to take you to the summit.

Well worth it in my opinion.

two girls on horses

If you aren’t up for the challenge of Concepción Volcano you can always do the Maderas volcano. Located on the south side of the island, this volcano is much smaller (at 1,610 meters) and takes a total of 6-8 hours to get to the top. You can find a lake at the top of it to cool down at the end of your travels. Although it’s doable without a guide, you can find them at around $20-35 USD.

Although I’m DEFINITELY an adrenaline junky, I decided to do the trek to Maderas Volcano not on foot, but on a horse! You would be surprised by how easy it is to get a guide and a horse tour up a volcano…

I literally paid 30 USD for me and my horse Pistola ( gun in Spanish) and had SO MUCH fun. My guide took us trotting through fields and off the beaten path of banana trees up the volcano.

This was by far the highlight of my trip. I left with a few scratches from the jungle, but nothing a good first aid kit couldn’t fix.

  • Cost – It’s free! (unless you take a guide)
  • Getting there – Take any public transport option
  • How long should you stay – The trek is all day.

Ometepe Itinerary Day 3: A sunrise you’ll never forget

Let’s Be Real.

You can’t see all the gems Ometepe has to offer in three days. But if you’re short on time and choose to leave after three days let’s make the last day count.

Ometepe is a special place for so many reasons, one of them being the Fireflies that light up the dark sky. I recommend that on your third (and perhaps last) day, you wake up for the sunrise, and head to Playa Santa Cruz to watch the sunrise with a view of both Concepción volcano and Maderas volcano…

Panoramic views are the best. After a dip in the lake, you will thank Ometepe for the special time on the island. If you are lucky, you’ll be greeted by a sky full of stars and fireflies before the sun makes its appearance.

girl sitting by a stream in the jungle of Ometepe, Nicaragua

Stargazing was one of my favorite things I did on Ometepe. I saw SO MANY shooting stars and felt so grateful for my time in Nicaragua through the skyline.

After your morning dip, you can stop by a local posada and have the famous Nicaraguan coffee (Be warned though, it’s super addictive!).

After your morning cup, head to Ojo de Agua  (A natural spring pool) and soak in crystal clear water with the sounds of nature and views of the jungle. This was by far one of my favorite parts of my trip. On your way to the springs, you will see lots of streams and rivers you can jump into for a soak as well.

The ferry back to the mainland is limited to a few hours a day, so I would recommend going near the port for a chilled morning and a departure around 3 p.m. with an option to stay a bit longer (the last ferry leaves at 5 p.m.)

Best Time To Visit Ometepe Island

Much like the rest of the tropical paradise found in Central America, the seasons here consist of Wet and Dry, yet the climate remains warm.

The wet time of year runs from May to October and the dry term is from November to April. If you want to visit the waterfalls on Ometepe, I recommend going towards the middle of the rainy season. I’ve been to the island during both seasons and have enjoyed it both times!

If you go during the rainy season though, enjoy the tropical water that is sure to soak you at some point. Take it as an opportunity to dance in the rain!

How to Get Around Ometepe

All the seasoned travelers out there know the best way to travel in style;

drum roll, please…

Rent a scoopy !

Or the Nicaragua equivalent of a scoopy whatever that may be. Even an ATV works!

I personally really loved how easy it was to get around. Plus in a little under 2 hours, you can do a loop around the WHOLE island! Making pit stops through pristine waterfalls and saying ‘Hi’ to the monkeys. (Careful though from personal experience, I wouldn’t bring bananas!).

So to tie it all together, here are the best ways to get around the island:

  • Motorcycle

(Car ofc but that’s a bit boring)

two girls on an ATV exploring Ometepe, Nicaragua with a view of a volcano

Getting around is very inexpensive too. You can look to spend around $5-15 a day for a reliable scooter rental or ATV to explore this jungle paradise.

Once again: Be aware!

The farm animals don’t really have a designated area in most parts of Ometepe. Often, you’ll see chickens, pigs, cows, and horses crossing the road abruptly..I happen to be a part of the unlucky category of tourists who had an unfortunate crash with one of the animals leaving me battered and bruised.

Be safe, travel with insurance , and WATCH OUT FOR THEM ANIMALS.

What to Prepare Before Visiting Ometepe

Preparation is KEY when visiting remote off-grid islands. Here is what I wish I had known before visiting:

  • Bring a  head torch ! Street lights are not common at night time, and chances are you will want a good flashlight for late-night adventures.
  • Hiking Boots! I made the mistake of skipping out on quality hiking boots the first time around and missed out on lots of adventures. Especially if you plan on doing volcano treks, your feet will thank you.
  • A positive attitude . Discomfort isn’t always easy. Sometimes it takes all of our strength to keep on going. Coming to Ometepe, I had no expectations and let the discomfort teach me what it needed to, and I left a  bit wiser ( or at least I like to think I did).
  • BUY TRAVEL INSURANCE! Believe me when I tell you, this will be so helpful before visiting Ometepe. The jungle has a mind of its own sometimes.

Final Thoughts on Ometepe Island

This is one of those places you can not miss. Your Central American backpacking trip will not be complete until you see this island. Here is a summary of how my trip went down:

I arrived with no expectations and ended up blown away. From the Eco lodges to the chocolate farms and cacao ceremonies. I was not expecting so much excitement so soon. As a solo traveler, I even had plenty of opportunities to meet people through workshops, parties, and tours through the volcano.

Even if it’s somewhat off the beaten path, you won’t regret adding the hidden gems of la Isla de Ometepe to your Nicaragua itinerary.

Ometepe thank you for the sweet memories and the even sweeter cacao.

INETER authorities said the volcanic activity does not pose “major risks” and categorizes the impact of the phenomenon as “medium to low”

By Confidencial

HAVANA TIMES – Concepción Volcano, the largest on Ometepe Island, launched a huge column of smoke and ash, while residents heard rumbles. Much of the island received volcanic ash from the crater, according to reports on social media.

The explosions from Concepción, which reaches a height of 1610 meters, began shortly after two in the afternoon, according to authorities who activated an alert system on Ometepe Island.

On social media, inhabitants of the paradisiacal island —which is home to the small cities of Altagracia and Moyogalpa— as well as tourists, shared videos and photos showing a large column of smoke rising into the sky, and ash visible in the environment.

“We can see how the Moyogalpa pier is covered in ash. Since I’ve lived on the island, I’ve never felt this pure adrenaline here, I had never seen it,” a user on TikTok recounted, showing a video at the island’s main port.

No Major Danger

A press release from the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER), published in official media, stated that the event on the island “does not imply greater danger.”

However, “there is a possibility that, over the coming hours or days, there may be small explosions of gases and ash, of lesser or similar characteristics to the current one.”

At 5:50 in the afternoon, INETER reported small residual tremors associated with the explosion, “while the degassing flow returned to its normal parameters.”

According to the state institution’s report, the magnitude of this explosion “was categorized as low to medium.” The communities most affected by gases and ash are: Los Ramos, Santa Teresa, La Unión, Los Ángeles, La Flor, Urbaite, and Las Pilas.

Concepción, in southeastern Nicaragua, is one of the country’s most active volcanoes.  Ometepe island is home to over 35,000 inhabitants and visited by thousands of tourists seeking exotic destinations.
