With 39 wineries in Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country, choosing who to visit and how to explore can feel overwhelming. We’re here to make it a little easier. And remember – the best trip is the one that leaves you wanting to come back for more, so there really are no wrong choices. We'll take you to our favorites!

A bit about the Oliver Region

To the north, basalt-faced McIntyre Bluff acts as a buffer and aids in creating a microclimate unique to the South Okanagan. It denotes the end of one geographic zone and beginning of another – McIntyre Bluff is the northernmost point of the Great Basin Desert.

As you pass the area, a subtle shift in the landscape is noticeable: darker antelope brush found in the south is slowly replaced by more grey/green sagebrush, and barren grasslands experience an increase of vegetation and shrubs.

To the south, Osoyoos Lake moderates temperatures and provides a water source for wildlife. Fed by the Okanagan River, Osoyoos Lake extends into Washington State and connects, eventually, to the Columbia River.

Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir are original to the area and cling to the sides of Anarchist Mountain, bordering the east. In the west, a slow climb up the Okanagan Range keeps the area in a rain shadow and helps maintain the region’s desert-like climate.

Top-Rated Okanagan Wine Tours!

a close up of a stool

Our tour of the wineries between Osoyoos and Oliver that we went on with MJ in mid-July was simply wonderful. MJ was simply amazing! Knowledgeable, friendly, and courteous. Thank you so much for arranging the tour for us. We visited wineries we may not have gone to if we had done things on our own!

Osoyoos Wine Tours went above and beyond. We told them it was my birthday and they sent us out in the large SUV limo! Exceptional, very informative, and he adapted our tour based on what wines we wanted to try. A birthday I will never forget and we very much appreciate the extra steps they took to make it special.

I booked a South tour for the Oliver / Osoyoos area and it was a wonderful experience. We were picked up at our hotel, and the driver was very knowledgeable of both the area and the wine industry. Silver Sage is a must! I can't wait until next time! Already planning another tour with my girlfriends for this summer!

Spectacular wineries with incredible vistas of the valley. We were never rushed, got to taste some interesting and great tasting wines. Our guide's knowledge of the region was thorough. I had a great time, got to taste great wines, and did not have to worry about driving after tasting. All around a great experience!

I was a bit nervous booking with Coconut Express because it was SO much cheaper than other wine tours in Pentiction. I tried Jamie Oliver's new Iceland frozen meals - one was unexpected

Iceland and The Food Warehouse have launched a range of frozen Jamie Oliver ready meals that promise to bring the celebrity chef's dishes to the masses with a choice of six meals

  • 11:01, 12 SEP 2024

Jamie Oliver has launched a new range of frozen meals

We have more newsletters

Jamie Oliver has teamed up with Iceland to roll out a new line of frozen meals, and as a mum who trusts Jamie's flavours and owns four of his cookbooks, the prospect sounded promising. Now available in stores are six ready-made dishes developed by Jamie to provide quick and easy meal solutions.

In a message to his email subscribers, Jamie said: "When you don't have the time or energy to cook from scratch, I've got you. Taking inspo from my favourite recipes over the decades, I've created this brilliant range. I hope you enjoy."

On offer are two "quick hob heroes" - 'Beef Rib Bourguignon' and 'Low and Slow Ragu' - alongside four oven-ready traybakes; 'Loaded Lasagne', 'Roasted Veg Lasagne', 'Mighty Moussaka', and 'Comforting Cottage Pie', all priced at £4 each.

I had the chance to test four samples provided by Iceland, sadly excluding the lasagnas, to determine if they might become a household hit with my family as much as his sausage pasta recipe. The £4 price tag being slightly steep for my liking, and each serving marked as "serves one", but I think there is some flexibility with this for some of the meals, reports the Mirror .

Ranking from least to most favoured, here's my take and there was certainly one surprising discovery...

Low and Slow Ragu - 6/10

For those craving a hearty plate of pasta, this ragu aims to satisfy. I prepared it following the package instructions, which simply involved adding it to a pan with four tablespoons of water and heating it through from frozen in 15 minutes.

You can pop it in the microwave, which I reckon is the route I'd take next time as it's quicker (nine minutes) and tidier (no pan to scrub). As it was cooking, it gave off a very aromatic scent, which did worry my husband.

Jamie Oliver's 'hob heroes' as part of his new range at Iceland and The Food Warehouse

It appeared silky and glossy, and upon tasting, it had a delightful rich tomato taste and the diced beef was tender and well seasoned. One of our favourite Jamie Oliver recipes is the sausage pasta with fennel, so I'm accustomed to Jamie adding an unexpected herb and it being a success.

However, I found the ground cloves and cinnamon a bit too aromatic for my liking, but then again, I'm one of those people who doesn't like coriander. My husband and teenage son really enjoyed the flavour and suggested it would be fantastic with a sprinkle of parmesan.

It claims to serve one, but given the amount of sauce, I'd say if you cooked enough pasta for two, this would easily cover them for a super easy midweek meal packed with flavour.

Comforting Cottage Pie - 6/10

The Comforting Cottage Pie might not be what you are expecting

If you're expecting a traditional cottage pie, you might be let down as the celeriac and cloves give this cottage pie a unique, rich taste. Cooked according to the recommended instructions (50 minutes in a preheated oven at gas mark 6), the toasted bread crumbs topping the potato cook really well, providing a delicious crunch.

The cottage pie is well seasoned, with a lovely sharpness from the red wine and Worcestershire sauce. It's a complex flavour for a frozen ready meal, but it doesn't taste like your average cottage pie - some will love this, others may not.

The celeriac is tasty, but if you're expecting creamy mash, you might be disappointed. This portion would serve one person.

The Mighty Moussaka - 7/10

Jamie Oliver's Mighty Moussaka was a surprise hit.

Despite aubergine not being known for retaining its texture, this dish was surprisingly delicious.

After 45 minutes in the oven, it came out near-perfect.

The lamb was excellent in the tomato sauce, and the cheesy bechamel was creamy and rich with a hint of nutmeg. The potato and aubergine held up well for a frozen meal, and the seasoning was spot on.

It was so comforting that I found myself going back for more - exactly what Jamie is known for.

The Beef Rib Bourguignon - 8/10

Another hob-cooked sauce, this was really tasty. Rich and dark, the deep flavours envelop you like a comforting blanket - impressive for a frozen meal.

The red wine and Dijon mustard add a great kick, and the mushrooms, carrots and onions all cook perfectly without turning mushy. This is the perfect comfort food for a dull autumn evening, and one I'd buy again. At £4, it's worth it.

While it's advertised as a meal for one, with the addition of mashed potatoes and veg, I reckon you could easily stretch this to feed two. If you're going to try any of the four, make sure this is the one you opt for.

St. Petersburg, Russia 4 Day Itinerary: In-Person or At-Home

St. Petersburg, Russia 4 Day Itinerary: In-Person or At-Home • Winetraveler

St. Petersburg, Russia beautifully blends history, culture, and architecture with elaborate palaces, churches, and world-famous museums and galleries. This city with more than 300 bridges, often called “The Venice of the North,” offers perpetual opportunities for history, art, and architecture lovers. Of course, sparkling wine and caviar is a delightful combination in this amazing city, along with vodka samplers. For specific recommendations, keep reading.

This itinerary is designed to help first-time visitors plan a trip to St. Petersburg, Russia while providing resources for travelers to tour many of the top sites from the comfort of their homes until non-essential international travel resumes. The recommendations include virtual tours, videos, books, and docuseries.

Things to Know Before You Go

The daylight hours are long in the summer, and short in the winter. The visa application process is extensive, time-consuming, a little expensive , and often needs to be applied for well in advance. The application form itself is quite lengthy. A visa invitational support document issued by a hotel or tourist agency (a booking reservation is insufficient) is required. Many hotels provide this for free. Others charge a small fee. If you’re entering for a short period on many cruise ships, the visa requirement is often exempted, but always confirm this first before going. You can browse flight deals as they arise here.

Winetraveler Tip: The CDC recommends not drinking tap water.

Where to Stay

The Golden Triangle Hotel  is a luxurious boutique hotel located in the heart of St. Petersburg with elegantly decorated rooms. A restaurant and lounge bar are available on-site. It is located near cafes, restaurants, and many top tourist sites, such as the Hermitage Museum and Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. Tours can be booked directly through the hotel. For those traveling with little Winetravelers, cribs can be reserved.

Another fabulous choice to consider is Belmond Grand Hotel Europe . Search St. Petersburg hotel deals on TripAdvisor  for additional hotel choices.

Must-See Places

This enchanting city has lots to do and see. While the city has changed names several times over the years from St. Petersburg to Petrograd, then Leningrad, and back to St. Petersburg in 1991 at the collapse of the Soviet Union, it has remained Russian since it was founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703. No conqueror, namely Charles XII, Napoleon, or Hitler, was able to successfully capture the city.

The Hermitage Museum/Winter Palace is acclaimed as being the world’s second-largest art museum after the Louvre. The Winter Palace, the former residence of the Russian Tsars, is included within the museum complex. The exterior is grandiose, but the true marvel is once you enter inside the doors. Each room appears more elegant and lavish than the one before it. The unparalleled opulence displayed throughout every square inch of the palace provides a flavor of the extreme wealth of Imperial Russia.

The museum was founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great to store her private art collection. The Winter Palace became a museum after Nicholas II was overthrown during the Russian Revolution of 1917. More than 3 million exhibits, artifacts, and artwork from all over the world are contained within the extravagant walls. The collection of artwork includes works by Pablo Picasso, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Van Gogh, and many others.

Winetraveler Tip: Consider arriving before it opens to start waiting in line at the ticketing machines as the lines get long very quickly. The ticketing machines often move faster than the ticketing counters. Arriving early may enable travelers to enjoy many of the rooms before the tourists flood the halls. At least pre-COVID-19, the rooms got packed making it difficult to shuffle through the crowd without touching shoulders with other visitors.

History lovers should head over to the Bronze Horseman , the equestrian statue of Peter the Great in Senate Square commissioned by Catherine the Great

The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood (also known as the Resurrection of Christ Church) is sure to WOW you. It is breathtaking inside and out. The church was built on the spot where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated in 1881 by a group of revolutionaries. The church’s name references this murder. The decorated onion-shaped domes resemble St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow. Mosaics dominate the interior of the church. The walls, columns, and arches are blanketed in over 7,000 square meters of mosaics. The detail in the mosaics are intricate and masterfully matched together. The walls appear to be elaborate paintings until you get closer.

The design of the Peterhof Palace , the summer palace of Peter the Great, was inspired by the Palace of Versailles. The lavish yellow palace perched on a hill is surrounded by perfectly manicured gardens, fountains, and golden statues.

Catherine’s Palace was built for Empress Catherine I, the second wife of Peter the Great. Empress Elizabeth (their daughter), known for satiating in luxury and never wearing the same dress twice, is responsible for the palace’s extravagance. Ornamented rooms feature elaborate furnishings and chandeliers, hundreds of lamps, painted ceilings, and walls covered in gold, mirrors, and exquisite artwork. The Amber Room —a room blanketed in 6 tons of amber mosaics—is the gem that draws most tourists to the palace. This room was initially presented as a gift to Peter the Great from the King of Prussia. During WWII, this palace, along with many others, was looted and ransacked by Nazis. The amber was stolen, never to be found again. In 2003, the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, a replica of the Amber Room was created.

Winetraveler Tip: Purchase tickets in advance. Anticipate it being extremely crowded. No photography of the Amber Room is permitted. For parents traveling with littles, be prepared that strollers are not allowed inside the palace.

St. Isaac’s Cathedral with dominating columns and a massive brilliantly colored golden dome is magnificent. During WWII, the golden dome was painted gray to blend it in with the surrounding buildings to save it from enemy aircraft. Bullet holes on the columns remain visible.

The star-shaped Peter and Paul Fortress on Hare Island was the first structure built in St. Petersburg. If you plan your visit to be there at noon, you should hear the time-honored tradition of the cannon being fired. The Peter and Paul Cathedral, within the fortress, is the burial place of many Russian rulers from Peter the Great to Nicholas II.

The Kazan Cathedral , dedicated to Our Lady of Kazan, a holy icon within the Russian Orthodox Church, was built to resemble Vatican’s St. Peter’s Basilica.

The Faberge Museum , housed in the Shuvalovsky Palace, hosts a collection of Faberge eggs made by Carl Faberge for the Russian Imperial Family, along with many other fancy items. The eggs were crafted using precious materials, such as silver, gold, diamonds, pearls, rubies, velvet, suede, and rock crystals. The first Faberge egg was made by the order of Tsar Alexander III for his wife.  The collection of eggs includes the Imperial Coronation Egg that was made in 1897 to commemorate the coronation of the last Russian emperor, Tsar Nicholas II.

Conclude one or more of your days by going to a world-known ballet and opera theatre at Mikhailovsky and/or Mariinsky Theatre.

Where To Eat & Drink in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg is a host to numerous diverse restaurants. Here are a few options to get you started:

Katyusha is a charming restaurant providing a homey atmosphere along with tasty traditional Russian meals. Stacked suitcases create the welcome desk with an antique cash register resting on top. Antique dolls, old books, and Russian dolls line the shelves built into a rustic brick wall. Flowery wallpaper/paintings, chintz lampshades, carved mirrors, printed sofas, and fabric curtains give a warm feeling. Their extensive menu includes a selection of caviar, homemade pickles, pickle soup, kebabs, dumplings, beef stroganoff, Russian meatballs, porridge, pancakes, an immense wine, and liquor list. If you’re unsure which vodka to try, order a tasting set and pick 5 vodkas to sample. Learn about and taste drinking traditions from the Soviet Union in the Katyusha Tasting Room.

L’Europe Restaurant , located in Grand Hotel Europe, is a luxurious restaurant featuring old world charm while elegantly blending European and Russian cuisine.

For those who love dining with a view, check out Terrassa Restaurant and/or Bellevue .

Indulge in gourmet caviar and sip sparkling wine at Art-Caviar . The menu features a variety of caviar, along with many other dishes such as artichoke soup, crab ravioli, duck breast, and filet mignon tataki. As described on their website, the interior is “inspired by the salons of the mid-twentieth century, parties with champagne and jazz music.”

Virtual Tours

Before traveling to St. Petersburg in person and soaking in all of its glory, there are many tours and videos available for free online enabling virtual travel to all the main sights from home. Take a virtual tour of the Hermitage Museum and Faberge Museum . Watch short videos taking you to the Hermitage Museum and the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood , Kazan Cathedral, Peter and Paul Fortress, St. Isaac’s Cathedral , Peterhof Palace , Catherine’s Palace , and the Amber Room . If you have 5 hours to spare, take an unhurried journey through the Hermitage Museum .

Dive deep into St. Petersburg’s history through Robert K. Massie’s masterfully written extensive biographies. His books are exhaustively researched and brilliantly written to read like novels. Peter the Great and Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman densely document all facets of these two immensely powerful figures. From the founding of St. Petersburg, a new capital city, during the time of war on land still belonging to Russia’s undefeated enemy, to battles, the establishment of Russia’s navy, territorial expansions, reforms, and increased Westernization along with Catherine II’s indelicate personal life, the reader is kept engaged throughout both of these books. Nicholas and Alexandra: The Classic Account of the Fall of the Romanov Dynasty covers the events leading to the fall of Imperial Russia and the end of the royal family.

City of Thieves is a captivating novel by David Benioff (co-creator of Game of Thrones ) that takes place during the Nazis’ brutal and lengthy siege of Leningrad (present-day St. Petersburg). Leningrad was encircled and the city’s vital utilities and food supply lines were cut off. In a place where everyone is near starvation, two young men are forced on a nearly impossible mission of acquiring a dozen eggs for a powerful NKVD colonel.

Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith is an eloquently written suspenseful historical fiction novel. This page-turner follows a detective under Stalin’s rule investigating a serial killer of children. It’s a binge-worthy read nearly impossible to put down evoking an array of emotions from disgust, fear, anger, horror, and sadness to craving and romance.

Still looking for more? Immerse yourself in history through docuseries. It’s no surprise the world has been fascinated by Catherine the Great. Catherine II, even though not born in Russia became one of the most powerful women in history after seizing the throne from her husband. In many ways, she continued what Peter the Great had started. Ekaterina: The Rise of Catherine the Great (2014-19), presently available on Prime Video, is a sensational Russian language historical drama series with English subtitles tracing her accession to power. HBO has a 4-episode series with Helen Mirren playing Catherine the Great (2019) following the end of Catherine II’s reign.

The Last Czars (2019) is an excellent Netflix docudrama series centered on Russia’s last royal family and their demise.

Empire of the Tsars: Romanov Russia with Lucy Worsley (2016) (available on Prime Video) is a documentary perusing through the reign of the Romanov dynasty focusing on Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, and the downfall of the final Tsars.

Great piece! I love how you have also included books tips and virtual tour options. St Petersburg is on my list to get to one day, so this will be great for prep work! I actually saw a book yesterday about Catherine the Great’s art collection – I didn’t realise how huge that was!

The 30 best TV show opening credit sequences: From Game of Thrones to Only Murders in the Building

Don't even think about skipping these intros.

Fox; AMC; HBO

There's nothing like a good opening credits intro to put you in the mood for your favorite show. While not every series these days bothers to include one, we have a special fondness for those that find value in this classic TV tradition. Some intros keep it simple with a memorable theme song ( All in the Family ; The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air ; Friends ) while others are so richly sequenced over earworm instrumentals ( Mad Men ; Desperate Housewives ; Game of Thrones ), they're like a work of art in and of themselves.

Here are our picks for the 30 best TV show opening credits, presented in no particular order.

The Simpsons (1989–present)

You peek into the clouds as a heavenly chorus sings the show's name. Jaunty orchestral music begins as Bart writes a different clever joke on the chalkboard every time. A frenzied tour of the town ensues, ending at the home of Homer, where the family races to pile onto the couch, creating more unique-each-week colorful mayhem. You are primed. You are smiling. You are home. — Dan Snierson

Game of Thrones (2011–2019)

Almost as long as a regular episode and covering twice the distance, the Emmy-winning opening sequence of HBO's fantasy flagship is an epic movie in and of itself, and as close to an all-inclusive cruise of Westeros as any of us will ever get. Even if you don't know some of the mind-blowing details behind the mechanical credits (courtesy of design firm Elastic), those sweeping strums and powerful drums create an evocative signal that Game of Thrones is marching near. —D.S.

Westworld (2016–2022)

Another brilliant partnership between HBO and design firm Elastic, Westworld opened its weekly doors with an eerie, elegant mood-setter that takes viewers through the uncomfortable process of humanoid robot synthesis. Haunting, evocative, and also a skeleton plays the piano. —D.S.

All in the Family (1971–1979)

What better introduction could there be for Archie and Edith than this improbably tender duet ? Wry and shrill in their delivery, respectively, Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton's strange harmony in the sequence is as pitch-perfect as their comedic chemistry playing the grumpy bigot and the bighearted "dingbat" on Norman Lear 's groundbreaking sitcom. Those were the days. — Mary Sollosi

Mad Men (2007–2015)

Mad Men 's moody opening titles are as enigmatic as its dapper protagonist. The 40-second clip, unfolding against RJD2's "A Beautiful Mine," visually references the opening of North by Northwest (1959) and the poster for Vertigo (1958) as it hints at the dramas of Don Draper ( Jon Hamm ): Images of sex, alcohol, and family, brightly commodified in midcentury style, set the backdrop for the endless free-fall of a faceless businessman in silhouette. Perhaps most indelible, though, is the final frame — we dissolve into a relaxed image of the ad man from behind, lounging on a couch, smoking what we can only assume is a Lucky Strike. Maybe he'll be all right after all. — M.S.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990–1996)

Every episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air opens with a hip-hop prologue laying down the sitcom's premise in a sequence brought to life, in brilliant neon, by an energetic Will Smith . The iconic theme song (don't pretend you don't still know the lyrics all about how his life got flipped-turned upside down) was created in just 15 minutes by Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff ; maybe that's why, even after all these years, it still sounds so artless, so spontaneous, so very fresh . — M.S.

Desperate Housewives (2004–2012)

The Desperate Housewives opening credits are a work of art — literally. The sequence consists of a series of popular historical paintings, primarily featuring women. Each piece, from Jan Van Eyck's The Arnolfini Portrait to Grant Wood's American Gothic , is animated to show the woman as aggrieved or overwhelmed by their lives, highly representative of the desperate ladies of Wisteria Lane. — Kevin Jacobsen

Sex and the City (1998–2004)

The splash. The sax. The twirl. The tutu . We can't help but wonder whether Sex and the City would be the same without its iconic opening credits , which perfectly introduce the sexy, stylish world of Carrie Bradshaw ( Sarah Jessica Parker ) — only to characteristically undermine our inventively dressed heroine just as she sees her own face on the side of a bus. — M.S.

Alice (1976–1985)

Linda Lavin starred in — and crooned the theme song to — Alice , a sitcom about a widow who moves to Phoenix and finds work as a waitress. Like many opening credits of the era, you learn everything you need to know about the characters just by watching the intro . (The smart one! The goofy one! The sassy one!) Lavin's early-season rendition of the theme song is soulful and poignant; unfortunately, latter seasons suffer a bad case of jazz-handsiness and '80s synths. (Random Buffy the Vampire Slayer connection: Tom Whedon — father of Joss — was a writer on the show!) — Henry Goldblatt

The Sopranos (1999–2007)

There's no worse crime than skipping the opening credits on an episode of The Sopranos (besides basically everything that happens after the opening credits on an episode of The Sopranos ). Tony's ( James Gandolfini ) drive down the New Jersey Turnpike may be decidedly unglamorous — in stark contrast to the decadence of his mob movie predecessors — but set to Alabama 3's impossibly cool "Woke Up This Morning," it perfectly sets up this singular world and the strange appeal of its antihero. — M.S.

Six Feet Under (2001–2005)

This opening to HBO's drama series about a family of funeral directors takes us through the clinical mortuary process . Offset by Thomas Newman's quirky theme, the sequence takes on a darkly humorous sensibility as we see a corpse being wheeled away, prepared, and buried. The intro speaks to the delicate tonal balance of the show, which often shifted from absurd to deeply profound — sometimes within the same scene. — K.J.

Shameless (2011–2021)

Perhaps initially most memorable for its bookending shot of Justin Chatwin 's buttocks — okay, at least for this writer — Shameless ' title sequence has always perfectly captured the show's spirit. Checking in on the Gallagher clan (along with a few friends) as they enter the small, grungy family bathroom, it captures a grittily hilarious vibe while also snapshotting a big ensemble in brief but revealing moments. — David Canfield

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015–2019)

Nothing but respect for Rachel Bloom & Co. shaking up the theme song every season , but in this case, nothing beats the original : a dreamy fantasia tinged with delirium that sums up the wild premise in one ridiculously catchy theme song. ("That's a sexist term!") Describing what makes this wild, complex show great might be a fool's errand, but show the unfamiliar this sequence, and they should get it pretty quickly. — D.C.

The Good Fight (2017–2022)

The Good Fight 's opening title sequence begins with a calm baroque melody that accompanies shots of stately objects (most items associated with the powerful): legal books, a fancy vase, a tea set, and a glass of (likely expensive) wine.

But then this sense of order is blown up, literally . Wine glasses, coffee cups, pricey purses, phones, and so much more gleefully explode as composer David Buckley's expands and crescendos. It's purposefully operatic . This is the Trump-concerned show's way of telling the audience this isn't your typical legal drama; this is actually a series about order being disrupted and all the hilarious absurdity that follows. — Chancellor Agard

American Horror Story (2011–present)

Paired with the viscerally unsettling theme song (those distorted dripping sounds!), the main titles to American Horror Story are sometimes the scariest part of an episode. Each season's opening credits feature creepy imagery associated with the theme — e.g., body parts in jars for Murder House , various witchcraft for Coven — setting the mood for the horrors that await. —K.J.

Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990–2000)

Brandon's ( Jason Priestley ) fist pump, Dylan's ( Luke Perry ) eyebrow raise, sexy beach volleyball games, Donna ( Tori Spelling ) and Kelly's ( Jennie Garth ) dance twirl: Our friends from California knew how to live it up in their opening credits . This was #squadgoals, before we even knew what they were. — H.G.

Friends (1994–2004)

Fountain-frolicking, coordinated umbrella-opening, and that New York City skyline make the whole "skip intro" streaming function massively unnecessary. Don't deny it, you know you sneak in four quick claps every time you start a new episode, and those lyrics will be there for you until the end of time (or at least permanently lodged in your memory). — Ruth Kinane

The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970–1977)

She could turn the world on with her smile, and when she did, she created TV's most essential, enduring image of a single gal in the big city. No matter how much the rest of the opening credits changed throughout the series' run, the sequence always concluded with the happy, hopeful, now-iconic shot of Mary Tyler Moore twirling in the street and tossing her hat in the air. She's gonna make it after all . — M.S.

Melrose Place (1992–1999)

A perfect antidote to the grunge sounds of the early-'90s: Melrose Place 's buoyant, pulsating pop-rock theme plays over dewy, aspirational photos of beautifully lit, ridiculously pretty people frolicking around L.A. (Seriously, how gorgeous are Josie Bissett and Andrew Shue?) This one also gets points for a wink of irony: Heather Locklear remained a "special guest star" for six-and-a-half of the show's seven seasons. — H.G.

Only Murders in the Building (2021–present)

Hulu may offer you the option to "skip intro," but this animated sequence is so thoughtfully crafted we would never dare do so. The haunting yet bouncy intro allows the audience to peek into various windows of the Arconia apartment building, where we spot our heroes — Charles ( Steve Martin ), Oliver ( Martin Short ), and Mabel ( Selena Gomez ) — going about their lives while shadowy figures descend the various staircases, any of them a possible suspect. —K.J.

True Blood (2008–2014)

The singular True Blood titles don't evoke classical vampires or even Southern gothic notions of the bloodsuckers à la Anne Rice . Instead, episodes of the horror drama open with Jace Everett 's "Bad Things" playing against a jarring sequence of images suggesting sex, filth, nature, predation, decay, religion, racism, evolution, and ecstasy, all intercut with shots of the fictional Bon Temps. By the end of the 90-second sequence, you can practically breathe in the heavy Louisiana air — and smell blood. — M.S.

The Real Housewives franchise (2006–present)

The very first season of the Real Housewives franchise opened with candid lines from the show as an introduction for each of the O.G. O.C. ladies (including Vicki Gunvalson 's mid-Botox cry of "I don't want to get old!" and Lauri Peterson's iconic "Are the police involved?"), but the careful crafting of the perfect Housewife tagline has since been elevated to high art.

One of the best lineups of bons mots came from the legendary RHONY season 3, which includes Alex 's ominous "To a certain group of people in New York, status is everything;" LuAnn 's very telling "I never feel guilty about being privileged;" Ramona 's baffling "I like making my own money, I find that an aphrodisiac;" and, of course, Queen Bethenny 's "New York City is my playground." Indeed. — M.S.

The O.C. (2003–2007)

The O.C. 's opening credits aren't revolutionary — just images of beautiful people in beautiful settings — until you factor in the theme song . Phantom Planet's "California" is not only the perfect fit for the series lyrically, but its opening notes will forever remind viewers of their time spent with the Cohens. — Samantha Highfill

The Brady Bunch (1969–1974)

Here's the story of a title sequence ... At this point, both The Brady Bunch 's theme song and its family-grid opening credits have become such pop-cultural institutions that there are more parodies on YouTube than there can ever be boxes on a screen. In related news: Wakanda forever . — M.S.

American Gods (2017–2021)

A truly trippy introduction kicks off Starz's series about the clash between new and old gods in modern America, manifest in a haunting neon totem that iconizes everything from pills, power, and cars to Buddha and Hanukkah.

Masters of Sex (2013–2016)

Every dirty euphemism in the book — plus a few creative ones you didn't even realize were naughty — gets treated with tongue-in-cheek celebration with mid-century style in the euphoric, playful opening to Showtime's sex-history dramedy.

One Day at a Time (2017–2020)

Netflix's (and later Pop TV 's) reboot of Norman Lear's classic sitcom gave the original theme song as much of a fresh spin as it did the show itself. Gloria Estefan recorded the track, a new original arrangement with Cuban styling, which plays against footage of contemporary L.A., family photographs, historical images, and shots of the cast. The sequence accomplishes just what the series did by honoring the original while also creating something new, with great affection and cultural specificity. — M.S.

Parks and Recreation (2009–2015)

In this case of theme song trumping style sequence, the cherished li'l sitcom keeps its intro short but sweet , clipping along with a bouncy ditty (written by Gaby Moreno and Vincent Jones) that perfectly matches the buoyant, bubbly personality of the show.

Even Stevens (2000–2003)

Sibling rivalry gets the stop-motion treatment in the beloved Disney Channel series' kinetic opening sequence , which ends, as most sibling conflicts do, with a TV-remote lightsaber battle. — M.S.

Severance (2022–present)

Apple TV+

Severance 's opening title sequence is as mesmerizing as the show itself. Playing on the sci-fi drama's themes of the relationship between your job and your life outside of work, we see Mark's ( Adam Scott ) reality shifting in increasingly surreal ways as he multiplies, changes shape, and tries to escape manifestations of himself. It's no wonder it won the Emmy for Outstanding Main Title Design in 2022. — K.J.
