Murrells Inlet's Greatest Cruises

My girlfriend’s and I celebrated a birthday on this enchanted sunset cruise. Our Captain was professional, lovely, knowledgeable, engaging and fun. The boat is a beautiful vessel. A perfect BYOB mermaid sunset adventure! Thank you for such a memorable experience! A jewel of Merrill’s Inlet! Highly recommend for a romantic evening, group of friends or families with children. They have a special adventure for everyone!

"Our 5 year old absolutely loved it and for a month afterward has been asking about every other day if we can go again! Our 2 year old was a bit young and not sure what to think. It was a full adventure for the kids, finding things onboard, a water cannon fight with a "pirate," celebrating with fruit juice, etc. The crew had amazing energy and made sure all the kids had a fantastic time! I can't recommend this enough for people with young kids. I'd estimate it's best for 3-8 year olds. And it was a fantastic value. For our kids, this was the highlight of a week in and around Myrtle Beach."

"What a peaceful and pleasant evening cruise! The Captain and his Mate were very hospitable and meet our every need. The scenes were breathtaking and not only did we see the sun set but we captured the full moon arising and it was beyond words. Of course God is the master of the sun, moon, stars and our lives but He outdid Himself on this one and these folks were used of Him to escort us into the scene."

A FIVE STAR DOLPHIN TOUR EXPERIENCE

We had a wonderful time with Carson and Forest. They played fun music and made us laugh. They had snacks and drinks for us. We were able to see birds and dolphins. I highly recommend choosing them for your cruise.

Our family had a great time on the Southern Shores catamaran. We caught a glimpse of 2 dolphins & a jellyfish while cruising.. spotted a crab on the island & found a perfect sand dollar! Forest & Carson were personable, knowledgeable & fun! I 100% recommend them & would take our family on their cruise again. Thank you for a fun time!

We had a wonderful time on our dolphin cruise with Forest and Spencer. The pair made our trip fun and entertaining all while feeling totally safe with my kids on the boat. Both were accommodating young men, we will be back with our next trip.

Went on the dolphin tour both our tour guides did a great job. Fun time had by everyone. Stopped at bird island and saw jellyfish. Loved it!

Must see and well worth the money! Captain and crew was awesome and we will definitely be booking with them again!!!!

Loved this trip! The guides were fun and informative. Saw some beautiful scenery. Definitely recommend.

What an amazing tour. The guides were friendly, funny and engaging. The price was more than reasonable. Please don't pass on the well deserved tip.

How do we find Express Watersports?

GPS: 4042 Highway 17 Business Murrells Inlet, SC 29576 Smartphone: Type in “Express Watersports” in Maps Get Directions

Do we need a reservation for the Ocean Sightseeing/Dolphin Watch Cruise?

Yes, reservations are required. Reservations can be made online or by calling 843-357-7777. All reservations must arrive 30 minutes before departure time so that we may check your group in. At the time of departure if seats are available, we will then take walk-ins. If no seats are available, walk-ins will have to wait until the next scheduled departure. The U.S. Coast Guard limits our passenger load.

What is the cancellation policy?

We require 48 hours notice of cancellation in order for us to refund you. If you cancel within 48 hours or are a 'No Show' there is a charge for the full amount.

Do you have restrooms?

Yes. Express Watersports is a full service watersports center. We have restrooms, showers and changing rooms for use after your Ocean Sightseeing/Dolphin Watch Cruise.

Is there a bathroom on board?

There is a full size bathroom on board. We are the only Myrtle Beach dolphin watch boat on the south end with a bathroom on board.

Where do we park?

We have free parking at our watersports center. Please lock all valuables in your car.

What about weather conditions in Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet?

Weather conditions come and go in Myrtle Beach. The Captain may either cancel or delay a trip if weather conditions are unfavorable. Rain squalls usually move through quickly. If the Captain cancels the trip there is no charge. If you are able to reschedule we will try again next available time, or if you prefer, we will give you a full refund.

How long is the cruise?

Our Ocean Sightseeing and Dolphin Watch cruises are 1 hour 30 minutes.

What is the minimum age?

Any age may board. Keep in mind other guests if your child is under the age of 3.

What type of boat do you have?

Our vessel is a 46’ Newton and is 16 feet wide. It is very stable in the ocean. There are upstairs and downstairs viewing areas. Bathroom onboard.

Is the boat covered?

Yes, partially. The boat has a cabin and sheltered deck for half of the boat and the other half is open to the sun. While some guests prefer the sun, others like to be in a shaded area.

What aquatic wildlife do you see?

We look for Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins, Batrays, Stingrays, Cannonball Jellyfish, Horseshoe crabs, Loggerhead Sea Turtles, and Leatherback Sea Turtles. Birds we might see include Osprey, American Bald Eagles, Brown Pelicans, Cormorants, and Oystercatchers.

Are we guaranteed to see dolphin?

We can’t guarantee seeing wildlife in the ocean, as dolphins are wild animals. It is illegal in the State of South Carolina to feed or trap dolphin for viewing. The Atlantic Ocean is vast, however we do have a very high success rate. Our dolphin watch vessel works with other vessels in our fleet relaying information on sightings, behavior patterns and feeding times.

What about sea conditions?

The ocean is a moving body of water. We will make every effort to minimize any heavy rocking and rolling by positioning our vessel in a way that is most comfortable to our guests.

What about sea sickness?

Guests may take Dramamine, Bonine or any over the counter or prescription sea sickness medicine. Our watersports center does sell Dramamine. If guests are prone to seasickness they should consult their physician.

What if I am pregnant?

We do not recommend pregnant women to participate. Please refer to your physician..

What is the season for the Ocean Sightseeing/Dolphin Watch?

At Express Watersports our Ocean Sightseeing/Dolphin Watch runs from March to early December.

What is 360 degree viewing?

360 degree viewing is a sales gimmick. There is no such thing as 360 degree viewing unless you're alone on a boat. All tour boats have people on board and dolphins are below the water line of a boat. People will stand up to see them down in the water. We position our vessel so that both sides and the back of the boat will get the opportunity to see the dolphins. All of our guests are free to walk around our boat and move from side to side. We do not have individual seating so that you're NOT trapped in your seat to see dolphin.

How do dolphins sleep?

Bottlenose dolphins never completely fall asleep. Dolphins only let one half of their brain sleep at a time. Dolphins let the right side of their brain go to sleep while the left side stays awake to control the breathing. Then, a little while later, the right side wakes up and the left side falls asleep.

What kind of dolphin will we see?

Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin

Do dolphins have friends?

Yes! Dolphins develop friendships that may last for more than 15 years! These dolphins often pair up and help each other out. Female dolphins also pick an 'auntie' dolphin to help them take care of their babies after birth!

Can we feed or swim with the dolphin?

No. there are federal guidelines that prohibit us from feeding or swimming with dolphin.

How many boats can be on one dolphin pod?

Noaa Marine guidelines states The maximum number of vessels within group of dolphins at any time should be no more than two.

What is the marine mammal protection act?

The MMPA prohibits the taking and importation of marine mammals and marine mammal products, where “take” means to harass, feed, hunt, capture, or kill any marine mammal, or to attempt to do so. "Harass" means to follow the same dolphin pod on multiple trips, rev engines and speed through the dolphins to scare them off so other boats cant see them, block the dolphins direction of travel, and getting closer than 50 yards, spending more than 30 minutes on viewing the same pod and swimming with and feeding dolphin is prohibited.

Are you apart of Dolphin Smart program?

Dolphin Smart program is a NOAA Federal Program. We follow all the guidelines set forth in the program. NOAA Dolphin Smart program is not available in the Carolinas so we can not be apart of it at this time.

How many years have you've been doing dolphin watches?

Since 1997. We started doing them on our Sunrise parasail trips. We had the dolphin logo on all of our advertisement. We started doing them on our dive boat in 2000 after dive trips. We run them daily. We are the longest running dolphin watch Family owned company in Murrells Inlet.

Are you carbon neutral?

This is another sales term gimmick tour companies use to promote their business as being green. Companies are promoting this in advertising to describe the business as buying carbon credits or carbon offsets to be "Carbon Neutral" to justify how much they are polluting the planet. It's quite simple. You're either creating emissions or you're not. Tour companies use this a book keeping trick to balance what they are doing in the environment. It is called Green Washing. It allows carbon emitters to keep on emitting carbon while masquerading as green company. Don't be fooled by this.

What Our Customers Are Saying

We went on the dolphin tour last Thursday and if you're thinking about taking one I highly suggest going with this outfit. They don't over pack the boat so everyone can see, you can sit in the shade if your prefer, there's a clean bathroom on board, and refreshments if you need them. The best part though other than obviously seeing the dolphins is the crews knowledge of the area and the animals that inhabit the land and water surrounding it. I learned so many cool things on our trip which is what made it for me. We've been out to see dolphins before and that was it a boat ride with sites no crew interaction so yeah I would definitely recommend these guys!! — Amanda L.
Wonderful experience! The crew were very knowledgeable and friendly and made the experience great! We loved seeing the dolphins and even got to see the first leatherback sea turtle of the season! Fun thing to do for your trip to Myrtle Beach! — John W.

The Hurricane Fleet is the Original Myrtle Beach Dolphin Cruise company. We operate out of the closest port to the Atlantic Ocean, allowing for more time on the water….to search for Dolphins.

On days when the  shrimp boats are running, we are able to pull right up behind to watch the dolphins feeding off the scraps and the nets coming out of the ocean full of fun critters. When the shrimp boat is running, the crew will toss up a bag of goodies for you to see, learn about, and touch if you’d like.

Our base is a cozy, quaint fishing town offering some of the world’s best seafood and unique shops. Located about 10 minutes outside of North Myrtle Beach, at the closest port to the ocean, you’ll have more time on the ocean enjoying the beautiful views of the Myrtle Beach area coastline.

Showing kids ocean finds during our Myrtle Beach Dolphin Tour

Dolphin Cruise

We saw Dolphins!

Regina L Delaney-Newsom Avatar

We LOVED this trip! The mates were so funny and personable, the Captain was really informative and his commentary about all the things we saw was so interesting. He really seems to love sharing the intercoastal waterway with people. We saw dolphins two minutes out of the docks and the captain turned the boat so everyone had a chance to see them. It was magical. The price was incredibly reasonable for a nice long cruise and there is not one single thing I would see done differently. Can't wait to see them again next year!

Belladora 64 Avatar

Amazing experience!!! All of the crew were wonderful. Aaron was amazing and help us out so so much. We will visit again soon Thanks from Zoe and Dan

Wonderful experience! Highly recommended! Captain and crew were awesome!

We had a great time! They were great with my kids and really made it enjoyable for all. My son kept calling him “my friend”.

Amanda Murray Avatar

Loved everything about the dolphin tour. Sadly we didn't see any dolphins, but the Capitan & crew were phenomenal. The boat ride was glorious! The scenery was beyond beautiful! Honestly, for the price, even without seeing any dolphins, I'd absolutely pay to do it again. Very much worth it!

Melissa Gushwa Avatar

By far the best dolphin cruise we have been on! Great crew, very informative and amazing dolphin sightings, plus the captain got right behind the shrimp boat so we could watch them pull their nets and dump the shrimp. It was AMAZING!!

Shannon Winland Avatar

Great time here! Great staff, good value. Everything you need available. They have burgers, hot dogs, drinks, snacks, supplies Would definitely go with them again!

We took the sunset cruise and it was awesome. Got to see a lot of dolphins and the sunset was beautiful. The captain and crew were very friendly and knowledgeable. There were 14 of us ranging from age 14 months to 64 years old and everyone enjoyed it. For the price it was well worth the trip. Highly recommend

Jill Erb Avatar

We took a trip with the Hurricane fleet crew, dolphin adventures. Fun ride, interesting facts, the dolphins were scarce on this day but, I would love to do it again.

We did the Dolphin tour. We saw several dolphins. It was well worth it to get out on the ocean. My daughter did get a little sea sick but got through it and obviously it was no fault of hurricane fleet just bring some dramamine along.

Samantha Gardner Avatar

One of the highlights of our beach trip. My 3 year old keeps talking about it. I was nervous about taking a toddler on a 2 hour trip with no guarantees but I booked the dolphin sunset cruise in the morning and we were on the water watching dolphins that evening. There’s something to do the whole trip. The ride out on the Intracoastal Waterway has scenery, seagulls that occasionally fly along with the boat, and the Captain has facts about what you’re passing. Once out on the ocean, the Captain had the boat next to a pod of dolphins within 10 minutes. Before leaving the dock he said he had to have the boat back at a certain time but then stayed out a few extra minutes because a separate pod of dolphins showed up right as we were about to head in. The ride back to the dock was relaxing. The weather had cooled off, the water was smooth, and you head down the waterway facing the setting sun. Perfect spot to grab a picture then sit back and take it in. Didn’t know what to expect so we packed some snacks in a small bag but they had a snack bar and on the way in one of the crew had something going on a grill. We’ll go back next year for sure and will recommend it to anyone in the area on vacation.

Best Myrtle Beach Boat Tours

There are so many great things to do up and down the Grand Strand, but one activity we most recommend is taking advantage of the different boat tours in Myrtle Beach. These tours offer a new and exciting experience to your vacation, right off the coast! We’ve put together a list of the best Myrtle Beach boat tours.

Myrtle Beach Dolphin Cruises

Dolphin cruises by myrtle beach watersports.

Myrtle Beach Watersports offers two fantastic dolphin cruises in the Myrtle Beach area. Aboard the Sea Thunder or Sea Screamer, you’ll enjoy an unforgettable two-hour-long ride, but these aren’t your average dolphin-watching cruises. Tours start with a narrated ride up the Intracoastal Waterway. The real adventure begins as the boats pick up speed heading towards the ocean. Once in the Atlantic, the dolphin watching begins as you travel along the Grand Strand’s gorgeous coastline. Tours are $28 for adults, $23 for seniors 60+ and $18 for children. Kids 2 and under are free. If you book online, there’s a $3 off coupon for adult tickets.

Dolphin Adventure Cruises by Voyager

Voyager offers a two-and-a-half-hour-long Dolphin Adventure Cruise . Once aboard the 75’ Starship cruiser, enjoy a ride down the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean. Voyager captains will find local shrimping boats to cruise alongside to give guests the best chance for seeing the magic of marine life as dolphins and sharks feed behind the boat. The Starship has restrooms, an air-conditioned cabin and a full galley on board with snacks and cold beverages. Tours are $28 for adults, $22 for children ages 3-12 and kids 2 and under are free.

Myrtle Beach Dolphin Watch & Ocean Sightseeing Cruise by Express Watersports

Express Watersports offers dolphin-watching experiences out of Murrells Inlet, located approximately 40 minutes south of Monterey Bay Suites . Dolphin cruises with Express last one and a half hours sailing through the Inlet into the Atlantic Ocean. Knowledgeable captains will educate guests on marine life and local history while riding from their private slip on the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk to the ocean. Guests will have the chance to see dolphins, sea turtles and other local marine life. Tours are $28 for adults, $20 for children ages 3-12 and free for kids 2 and under. Book your Myrtle Beach Dolphin Watch Cruise online today !

Dolphin Watch Trips by Action Water Sportz

Just like the name implies, Action Water Sportz takes dolphin watching to the next level with jet ski tours. After receiving training and instructions from Action’s experienced staff, guests will hop on their own jet ski and the group will head out on an adventure. The tour includes a stop at Barrier Island for exploring then out to the ocean for the highlight of the trip, sightseeing for the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin and other local marine life.

Dolphin Watch Trips last two hours and costs $190 per person. Guests must be at least 16 years old with a valid driver’s license to drive their own jet ski. Kids 18 and under may ride as a passenger with parental consent.

Pirate Boat Rides in Myrtle Beach

Blackbeard’s pirate cruise.

Ahoy, mateys! Climb aboard Blackbeard’s Treasure Hunter, the largest pirate ship in the Carolinas, for an hour-long, treasure-hunting adventure. Upon boarding the Treasure Hunter, kids will transform into little mates with pirate mustaches, tattoos and swords (all provided for free). Your little mates will join the fearless pirate crew as they hunt for the lost treasure, battle Bad Bones Billy with water cannons and sword fight until the treasure is secured. Pirate cruises are $25 for adults, $25 for kids ages 3-12 and $10 for kids ages 1-2. Book your treasure hunt online today !

Pirates Adventures

Yo-ho! All aboard the Sea Gypsy for a pirate adventure. With a treasure map in hand, the pirate crew will set sail in search of the sunken treasure of the Atlantic. This interactive boat ride is fun for the whole family. Pirate Adventures are $25 per person for a one-hour excursion. Every kid will have the chance to dress like a pirate with a painted mustache, anchor tattoo and lucking treasure-hunting vest! This adventure is very hands-on including a pirate battle, water cannon fight, treasure hunting and celebration party at the end.

kids will love the pirate adventures offered on popular myrtle beach boat tours

Myrtle Beach Casino Boat Cruises

The big “m” casino.

The Big “M” Casino is South Carolina’s only casino with two luxury yachts that offer year-round cruises. Try your hand at slot machines, table games and more! This is the perfect cruise for adults looking to let loose without the kids. Cruise during the day and enjoy cocktails while you gamble on Tuesdays through Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Take an evening cruise and enjoy the onboard dinner buffet for only $13 additional! Evening cruises run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 6:00-11:00 p.m. Casino boat cruises are $20-30 per person and reservations are recommended . You must be 21 or older to board.

The 5 Most Popular Sunset Cruises in Myrtle Beach

The beautiful ocean views beckon you to rise each morning here at The Strand Resort with most units facing directly along the Atlantic Ocean.  Although, your balcony is the perfect place for you to take in the sunrise, where is the best location to watch the sun set?  How about on the water, on a sunset cruise.  The skies light up with the most breathtaking colors ranging from brilliant oranges, pinks and yellows as the sun dips below the horizon and begins to cool us off after a hot day at the beach.  There are many ways to discover nature's handiwork, we thought we'd give you the inside scoop on some of the best sunset boating excursions in town.  Here are some of our top picks.

Enchanted Sailing Charters:  This charter is perfect for couples looking to celebrate an anniversary, birthday or just being together. The Enchantress is the largest chartered sailboat in the Myrtle Beach area, measuring an impressive 44 feet. Two cruises are available for those hoping to view the sunset in style. The PM Sunset Sail is a three-hour tour through Little River Inlet, passing the scenic Dunn Sound and the uninhabited Waties Island and Bird Island. The crew hoists the sails and heads into the Atlantic to give patrons a gorgeous sunset view over the coastline. Couples can buy tickets or reserve the entire vessel for a private sail. The Sunset Dinner Cruise departs the marina while you enjoy an appetizer, then anchors at Bird Island before serving a dinner catered by Snooky’s. The ticket includes a four-course meal, a three-hour cruise and a front-row seat to one of nature’s best shows.

Barefoot Princess Riverboat:   This 64-foot-long, 24-foot-wide riverboat offers more than just a cruise down the shoreline. Guests admire the gorgeous Myrtle Beach sunset from closed and open decks, and dance to music provided by a DJ or live musicians. Join on the right nights, and the cruises may be timed to catch the fireworks at North Myrtle Beach’s Barefoot Landing. The Snack Bar is always open for visitors to purchase snacks and beverages. The 1.5-hour cruise is $23 for adults, $21 for locals and seniors, and $12 for children.

Express Watersports:  This slow-paced cruise drifts along the waters of Murrells Inlet after departing from the company’s private dock. Patrons can watch the sun slip behind the horizon as they enjoy complimentary Inlet Rum Punch and wine while snacking on a cheese platter. Get your picture taken to capture the serenity and beauty forever. The one-hour cruise is $30 for adults and $25 for kids 12 and under. Express Watersports recommends bringing a valid government-issued photo I.D. and a camera. Groups with reservations must arrive at least 30 minutes before departure.

Crazy Sister Marina:   A two-hour Beach and Ocean Sightseeing Cruise on the New Inlet Princess is a wonderful way to take in everything the shoreline has to offer. Patrons sail from the Crazy Sister Marina in Murrells Inlet and travel as far as the SkyWheel. Not only will guests enjoy breathtaking views of the sunset along the marsh and ocean, but it is possible that various types of sea life will be seen along the way. This vessel offers access to an air-conditioned cabin, a snack bar and onboard bathrooms. An adult ticket is $30, and tickets cost $20 for children age 3 to 12. Reservations are recommended for this cruise.

East Coast BrewBoat:   The East Coast BrewBoat is a new addition to the waters of Myrtle Beach. This one-of-a-kind experience is perfect for those who love biking, boating and beer. Patrons pedal their way along the Murrells Inlet marshlands while enjoying drinks and music. Imagine having a couple drinks and laughs with your friends while pedaling yourself into the sunset. The cruise is BYOB (or BYOW), but cups, coolers and ice are provided. The one-hour cruise is $25 for an individual seat. It costs $325 for a private charter of up to 15 people. Though there are currently no age restrictions, you must be over 21 and have a valid photo I.D. to bring wine or beer aboard.

After an evening on the water, head back to The Strand resort where you can enjoy a drink from the bar or a moonlight stroll on the beach before heading to bed for a good night's sleep.  Before you know it, the first peaks of daylight will be waking you up to begin another amazing day here in Myrtle Beach.

Captain Andy was a joy to sell with. I had 2 children with me and he was very accommodating and the children loved him. I was not doing too good with the deep sea so he was very Accommodating and whipped us into the intercoastal Where we sailed up the inner coastal and fished with the children it was wonderful. Definitely a 10 out of a 10!!

11 Towns Where You Can Actually Afford to Buy a Beach House

I t might have taken a global pandemic, but it seems like many urbanites have finally woken up to the joys of, well, not living in a major city. As remote work engulfed the nation, tiny apartments with astronomic rents were traded in for spacious homes in the countryside or along the coast. And despite housing prices being on the up and up around the country, it’s not too late to get your own slice of beachy bliss .

It’s no secret that real estate is skyrocketing in places like Miami , San Francisco , and the Jersey Shore . But if you’re after all the beach access minus the flash, there are plenty of other spots on either coast (and in between) where you can score a dreamy home by the water with a stretch of sand so deserted, you can practically call it private .

Coos Bay, Oregon

While North Coast Oregon towns like Cannon Beach tend to steal the spotlight, some of the state’s most scenic shoreline sits in Coos Bay. The highlight is Sunset Bay State Park , surrounded by majestic cliffs where miles of hiking trails take you to breathtaking vistas overlooking the secluded cove and Pacific Ocean beyond. Coos Bay also straddles the southern border of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area , where you’ll find impressive natural beauty—including sand dunes towering over 500 feet tall. As for that other thing Oregon is best known for—beer, we mean beer—head into town for 7 Devils Brewing , whose nutty Lighthouse Session Pale Ale is as well-paired with a sunny summer day as it is a brutal winter windstorm.

Swansboro, North Carolina

North Carolina is chock-full of powdery, white-sand beaches, but only in Swansboro can you watch Osprey landings while you tan. The former East Coast shipbuilding and fishing hub, located about an hour and a half up the coast from Wilmington, shares a border with Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. Hammocks Beach State Park , a patch of oceanfront that laps up against a host of gorgeous beaches only reachable by boat, might be the area’s greatest hidden gem. Weekend getaways include quick jaunts to the Outer Banks or sleepy islands like Ocracoke . The town itself features a main street lined with boutiques and cafes, but for a good spot to mull over your permanent move, head to Bake, Bottle and Brew for craft beer, good books, and waterfront views.

Crescent City, California

Perhaps the only California beach town on the planet where you can still score a home for less than $350,000, this Del Norte County hideaway is as sleepy and picturesque as they come. Think soaring redwoods, vintage lighthouses, scenic byways, and windswept shorelines as far as the eye can see. It’s nothing short of a surfer’s paradise—at least for surfers in the know—and families love the wide open spaces and upbeat attractions like Ocean World , an aquarium stocked with tank after tank of sharks, seals, rays, sea lions, and more. A tiny regional airport provides easy access in case you get sick of Pebble Beach’s serene network of coves or Kellogg Beach’s driftwood-laden expanse (as if), while the adorable downtown is lined with just the right amount of shops, bars, and restaurants to keep you busy (consider SeaQuake Brewing and Paragon Coffeehouse your new locals). Relocate here and expect to spend the rest of your days basking in the ocean breeze, waving at your neighbors, and tending your native plant garden.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach has a lingering reputation as a kitschy, hectic spring break spot —and sure, in March you’ll find a college kid or two loitering on the boardwalk and taking one too many turns on the SkyWheel. But this city on the Grand Strand has a far more slow-paced, family-friendly vibe than people give it credit for—despite the fact it’s the fastest-growing city in the US, according to U.S. News & World Report . Along the 60-mile shoreline, you’ll find tons of seafood joints, learn how to shag dance at Fat Harold’s Beach Club , and ditch the tourists in idyllic neighborhoods like Cherry Grove in North Myrtle. One of the country’s most impressive sculpture gardens lies a few miles down the road at Brookgreen , and you can get your fill of the great outdoors by kayaking through mangroves and cypress swamps along the Waccamaw River.

Freeport, Texas

It might be easy to overlook this little town of about 12,000, which sits an hour from Houston and 45 minutes from Galveston . But if you’re down to spend your days swimming, fishing, and diving the northernmost coral reefs in the United States, Freeport might be the place for you. The town is best known as the gateway to Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary , which claims the best reef diving along the Gulf Coast. You’ll also have the expansive Bryan Beach to yourself, plus plenty of opportunities for deep-sea fishing. It’s a bit like the Florida Keys , right at the tip of Texas—so if you don’t mind a little humidity, this just might be your ticket to paradise.

Hampton, Virginia

Average home price: $253,911

Sandwiched between the Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads Harbor, this coastal Virginia hideaway is bursting with history. Not only was it the first continuously English-speaking settlement in the State (yes, that amount of history), it also gave rise to the country’s first-ever free public education system, and served as the training ground for NASA’s very first astronauts. That, plus local monument Fort Monroe played a huge role in the Civil War. Thousands of formerly enslaved peoples sought refuge there after Major General Benjamin Butler’s 1861 ruling that they were “contraband of war” and thus couldn’t be sent back, kicking off the first step on the road to emancipation. Later, Confederate president Jefferson Davis was imprisoned inside the same fort—dubbed Freedom’s Fortress—after his 1865 capture. You can learn all about both turning points at the Casemate Museum at Fort Monroe National Monument .

Daytona Beach, Florida

Though a home by the Great American Race costs nearly twice what it might have five years ago, compared to a lot of Florida, it’s still pretty darn cheap. That means you'll have plenty of money left to put towards that giant four-wheel-drive vehicle needed to cruise along one of the only drive-on beaches in the country. Rest assured that the city is slowly moving away from its spring break past, so you won’t have to deal with as many college students invading the shores each March. Plus, with Orlando just a short jaunt away, Daytona offers the perfect place for a beach escape with easy access to big-city amenities.

Michigan City, Indiana

Average home price: $156,305

The Midwest has no coastline, you say? No beaches in sight? Think again, says this northern Indiana town perched on the banks of Lake Michigan just a stone’s throw from the always-epic Indiana Dunes National Park . It might be fresh water we’re talking about, but it has tides, waves, and sand—and, most importantly, not a single shark. It’s also got breezy lakefront restaurants, a handful of serious breweries (not to mention a pretty legit winery ), a top-notch outlet mall, a full-on casino, sprawling botanical gardens, and crowd-pleasing annual events like the Great Lakes Grand Prix and the Lubeznik Arts Festival . All that plus dirt-cheap home prices, whether you’re in the market for a move or simply looking for a getaway plan that won’t break the bank. And if you’re itching for a little city-slicking, Chicago is only an hour’s drive down the road. Also, did we mention the whole zero sharks thing?

Ocean Springs, Mississippi

In 2022, this artsy, quintessentially Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast town ranked fifth in Smart Asset's top 10 most affordable beach towns . And of those counted, Ocean Springs was by far the beachiest. Step out of your charmingly affordable cottage and into the colorful, historic downtown lined with towering live oaks, artist studios, and locally driven restaurants. There's no shortage of funky bars on Government Street, where live music is the norm every weekend. Closer to the coast, you're a short boat ride from the turquoise waters of the Gulf Islands National Seashore , a big part of why this isn't just one of the very best beach towns in America.

Westport, Washington

Average home price: $294,053

With an average home price of $563,764 statewide—that’s nearly 2% higher than last year—finding a place to lie your head in the Evergreen State isn’t an inexpensive venture. And it’s even pricier along the shoreline, where waves crash rhythmically against the cliffs, the seafood is fresher than fresh, and the heavy sea air will surely cure whatever ails you. That’s why Westport, stashed along Grays Harbor about two hours southwest of tech-crazed  Seattle , is your best bet if you’re hoping to pry a little sun and surf (yes, actual surf) out of this notoriously gloomy part of the country. Cast a line, drop a crab pot, or embark on a whale-watching expedition in the Marina District, walk Fido down one of the many dog-friendly beaches, then catch the sunset over oysters and hand-breaded halibut at a local fish shack. Now that’s living.
