To celebrate a return to "new normality" after the COVID-19 lockdown, what better way of getting the majestic Northern Belle back on track than to call on the services of the crimson-painted steam locomotive that proudly bears the name Princess Elizabeth.

A royal day out that's fit for a Queen

This magnificent engine, which once hauled the Queen’s Royal Train, takes us on a regal journey across Britain’s green and pleasant land in pampered comfort while we dine like royalty on the most magnificent seven-course lunch, with the finest wines and champagne, and look forward to brighter days ahead.

Our trip not only embraces the Golden Age of Steam, but also heralds a nostalgic reunion between Princess Elizabeth and Duart – one of our Pullman-style carriages resplendent with its exquisite marquetry motif of the famous castle on the Isle of Mull – which Her Majesty used when it too used to form part of her Royal Train.

Experience the epitome of rail travel with this fantastic journey of a lifetime. A unique opportunity to travel behind one of the world's most famous steam locomotive’s Princess Elizabeth (6201), this magnificent engine was built in 1933 and named after the then seven-year-old Queen to be, and was used to haul the Queen’s Royal Train.

Introduced to provide the ultimate in stylish and enjoyable day excursions and short breaks throughout the North of Britain, the Northern Belle combines classic craftsmanship and contemporary engineering and is a reflection of the affluent 'Belle' trains of the 1930's. Each of the six dining carriages is named after a great British castle or stately home. Interior designs, created by James Park Associates, reflect the character of the stately home or castle that they are named after. Marquetry, fabrics and brass ware have been specifically commissioned from British craftsmen. Stunning landscapes and forgotten destinations are unveiled during leisurely days and weekends of discovery. This is Britain at its finest, and there is no better way to enjoy it. What is the Northern Belle?

The Northern Belle is a luxury train that ushers passengers to various points across the U.K. ,while featuring wonderful brunches, tantalizing teas and impeccable dinners. Introduced in 2000, the train was formerly part of the Venice-Simplon Orient Express.

The train’s theme was inspired by the 1945 film “Brief Encounter”, which depicts a love story set amongst trains. You will find that each train is named after a place in which the train visits and each carriage exudes a personality of its own.

Inlaid fine woods, marquetry motifs and mural paintings set the stage. Travel in the ultimate lap of comfort and luxury while having intricate details to fawn over.

The Northern Belle is traditionally hauled with a modern diesel-electric locomotive. However, on special occasions the Northern Belle is hauled with a steam engine that harkens back to the days when luxury travel was in it infancy.

Edinburgh & Royal Yacht Britannia –

After boarding the Northern Belle and enjoying an exquisite brunch, you will be transported to the Royal Yacht Britannia. Here, you will be able to tour such a relic of history. When you board the train again, enjoy a delectable dinner. A sommelier chooses wines paired to bring out the various flavors of your meal.

How much does a ticket cost for the Northern Belle?

The Northern Belle can be a relatively economical excursion, or you can go all out and spare no expense. For $365 you can enjoy a a traditional English Tea Service with all the important trimmings. Strolling musicians and a magician will visit your table as you take in the ever-changing landscape.

The most expensive excursion is priced at $930. On this trip, you are whisked away by the Flying Scotsman, the most famous steam locomotive in the world. You will travel to Edinburgh where you can stroll around the historical sights and various shops. Of course champagne, wines, fabulous cuisine and delicious desserts are all a part of the affair.

The Northern Belle is also available for hire for your special event. The train can accommodate up to 252 passengers, with 42 passengers in each carriage. You must speak to an agent about details and time of year in order to get a price on this once in a lifetime event.

Is there a dress code for the Northern Belle train?

You may want to save your flip-flops and shorts for a more casual affair. A ride on the Northern Belle is an occasion to celebrate. If not a birthday or a wedding, why not just celebrate life. Accordingly, you should dress up and make it a more formal affair as they did in The Golden Age of Travel, back in the 1920’s and 30’s. For women, a lovely dress or smart pantsuit will do. Men can don a sport coat, tie or even a suit. You can’t be two dressy on a luxury train.

Can you sleep on the Northern Belle train?

The Northern Belle train is not equipped to house passengers for overnight service. However, the staff is provided sleeping chambers. This gives their passengers the best service available anytime they are on the train.

If you would like to have an overnight experience, book a hotel or rental property at your destination city. This addition can turn an amazing one day experience into a multi-day adventure!

Is the food good on the Northern Belle?

From champagne brunches, to five-star meals, the Northern Belle is packed with culinary experiences that make it difficult to choose.

This is just a note to say how much Linda and I enjoyed our Grand Deluxe Trans Siberian Tour Rail adventure with Travel all Russia. We were especially glad to have seen the subways in Moscow which were not on the original agenda, but that our guide made sure we saw. Also, the opening ceremony at Naadaam in Mongolia was not in the schedule, but we were delighted to have a front row seat. It was an outstanding show.

Our journey to Russia was a great one. All of the guides were wonderful and everything was so well organized.

There are just a few things I'd suggest. I think you need to warn future travelers about the Chinese train. There were not two lower berths as we were told and since neither of us was able to climb to the top bunk, we had to take turns sleeping! Also, the train was disgustingly dirty.

Other than that, the other accommodations were fine. As far as the food, there was much too much fish and borscht.

The trains were clean, comfortable and always on time.

The hotels, though varied, were always welcoming and attractive. The restaurants, for the most part, served us well.

Our guides were knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Once a guide could not join us because of a medical problem, and the next day another guide took us to two days' sites in one day.

A new international freight train route began operations on Monday, linking Huanghua Port in the city of Cangzhou, in north China's Hebei Province, with the Russian capital Moscow. The cargo train will travel approximately 8,000 km over about 15 days.

The train is loaded with 50 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers of goods valued at about 20 million yuan (about 2.82 million U.S. dollars), including auto parts and mechanical equipment.

News | Russian missiles kill 6 in Ukraine’s second-largest city where Moscow’s troops are pressing

KYIV, Ukraine — Russian missiles slammed into Ukraine’s second-largest city in the northeast of the country and killed at least six civilians early Thursday, officials said, as Kyiv’s army labored to hold off an intense cross-border offensive by the Kremlin’s larger and better-equipped forces.

At least 16 people were injured as S-300 missiles struck the city of Kharkiv , regional Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said. The sound of 15 explosions reverberated around the city of some 1 million people.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the attack “extremely cruel.” He expressed renewed frustration at not getting enough air defense systems from the country’s Western partners to prevent the barrages after more than two years of unrelenting war .

The city of Kharkiv, which is the capital of the region of the same name, lies about 12 miles from the Russian border. Moscow’s troops have in recent weeks captured villages in the area as part of a broad push, and analysts say they may be trying to get within artillery range of the city.

In what is shaping up to be Ukraine’s biggest test since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, outnumbered and outgunned Ukrainian forces are being pressed at several points along the about 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line that snakes from north to south along the eastern side of the country.

With Ukraine short of air defenses and waiting for more Western military support that recently started trickling in, its army has been pushed backwards in places while Russia has pounded its power grid and civilian areas. Kyiv endured further power outages Thursday.

Zelenskyy said the main hotspots in recent fighting have been Kharkiv and the neighboring Donetsk region, where in February Ukraine’s defenders withdrew from the stronghold of Avdiivka . For the Kremlin, taking control of all of partially occupied Donetsk is a war priority.

At the same time, and in an apparent effort to stretch Ukraine’s depleted forces, Russian troops have made incursions in the northern Sumy region.

Nearly 1,500 people, including 200 children, have been evacuated from the towns of Bilopillia and Vorozhba in that region, according to regional Gov. Volodymyr Artiukh.

“The main focus (of the fighting) is on the entire border area,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address Wednesday.

Ukraine has also trained its sights on Russian regions across the border. Russia’s defense ministry said Thursday that 35 Ukrainian rockets and three drones were shot down over the Belgorod region. Regional Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov said one drone struck a house and exploded after being shot down, killing a woman.
