It sounds like a dream – getting a job without a degree that allows you to travel the world. For a long time, it kinda was, but thanks to remote working and freelancing sites like Fiverr and Upwork, it’s never been easier to live and work abroad without a degree.

12 Travel Jobs that Don’t Require a Degree

1. photographer.

First up is a travel job classic, the photographer. This is obviously massively different from an Instagram influencer that just snaps their own holiday photos.

Photographers can pretty much work anywhere as long as they have their camera ( here’s the one I use !), accessories, and a laptop to edit and submit their work on.

From sports photographers at surf resorts to selling action shots to guests to photographers picking up commercial gigs for small businesses to wedding photographers, and beyond, there are a lot of options for photographers to work abroad without a degree.

Average salary: in the UK, the average is around £29,000 a year. This obviously depends on the industry, clients, and the amount of work that you’re willing to take on.

This one is a particular favorite among digital nomads. As long as you’ve got a laptop and a stable WiFi connection, you can write commercially.

Whether you work in a content department for a remote company, or you’re working as a freelancer through sites like Fiverr and Upwork, there are so many gigs available for writers and editors with some experience – no degree necessary. 

Average salary: in the UK, the average is around £28,000 a year. Freelancers with a large roster of clients can often earn more than this.

3. Hotel or Hostel Staff

Especially if you’re traveling around multiple destinations, like on a gap year or an open-ended trip, picking up work in a hotel or hostel is a great way to earn money on the road.

It always helps if you have hospitality experience beforehand or some language skills, but it’s not a prerequisite.

If you’re in a popular tourist place, there are always workers coming and going, so there are normally a fair few job openings in different hotels and hostels.

Job roles include housekeeping, reception or tour desks, bartenders and waiting staff, porters, social media teams, and more.

There’s a lot of variety depending on your experience or shift preferences, and they’re all transferable across multiple destinations and locations. 

Average salary: It depends on the job role, but normally the national minimum hourly rate. You can work up to supervisor or manager level pretty quickly, or can also work in exchange for accommodation in some cases.

4. Cabin Crew/ Flight Attendant

Working as a flight attendant is one of the original travel jobs, and it’s still super popular as you don’t need a degree and just have to go through a training period.

The benefits include free or discounted flights, free accommodation on layovers, and getting to travel the world as your actual job.

It might help to have some experience in customer service as we all know how difficult some passengers can be! 

Average salary: Cabin crew average salary is pretty low at around £18,000 a year, but you do save a lot of money on travel and accommodation, so you’re not spending as much on the road.

Got a flair for cooking up a storm? If you’re trained up as a chef or have a good amount of experience, you can work pretty much anywhere in the world.

Restaurants and cafes are places that always seem to be hiring no matter where you are in the world. 

Obviously, the hours aren’t the most sociable but you can benefit from fairly stable work opportunities, great food on shift, and a brigade of fellow chefs and kitchen staff that you can go out with after your shift.

Average salary: In the UK, the average salary is £26,000 which rises depending on your role within the kitchen.

6. Sports Instructors

If you’re a fan of hitting the water, running yoga sessions, scaling rocks, or love checking out the slopes, consider becoming a sports instructor.

Although these jobs can be largely seasonal, you can jump from resort to resort to create a full-time, annual schedule. 

You’re probably going to have to have some kind of qualification, but you can often get the basic instructor levels by going on one or two-day courses. 

Average salary: In the UK, £22,000, but if you’re working for a resort or company, they’ll often throw in accommodation and equipment free of charge.

I’ve spoken a little bit about seasonal sports instructors that can follow their sports season around the world, but there are plenty of support staff roles in these resorts that you can enjoy if you’re not a qualified instructor. 

One of the most common entry-level seasonal jobs is being a chalet host on a ski resort. You basically cook, clean, and support the guests of a chalet for the whole season.

Sometimes there are guests in residence and sometimes you’re house-sitting between bookings. You tend to get your accommodation, meal allowance, and a ski pass.

Average salary: In the French Alps, you’re looking at about €900 a month but it does include a lot of benefits and perks. 

10. Consultants

If you’ve got a specialism that you can share on a consultant basis, then you can 100% work from anywhere with a WiFi connection.

Say you run webinars for branding, social media, flipping houses, whatever – you can do this from anywhere.

No degree is necessary, but you’re going to need plenty of experience and remote clients.

But with student loan debt topping $1.77 trillion (an increase of 66% over the past ten years), according to the Federal Reserve , you may ask if a four-year college degree is worth it. 

The answer will likely depend on your career choice. Some professions — medical and healthcare providers, lawyers, teachers, nuclear engineers — all require a degree (or degrees). However, some underrepresented career fields welcome applicants who never attended college or didn’t graduate with a four-year degree, and some of these careers pay very well.

The list spotlights well-paying jobs and their accompanying educational requirements, based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics .

Of the 36 million workers in the U.S. aged 25 to 34, 19 million have completed only some college or less.

A majority of Americans don’t think going into debt for a four-year college degree is worth it, according to a new study from Pew Research Center, released today. Only 22% of 5,200 survey respondents said that college is worth the cost if a student has to take on debt, while another 47% said a four-year degree is worth it only if the student doesn’t have to take out loans. That leaves 29% of respondents who say college isn’t worth its cost, regardless. Even a majority of college graduates themselves are skeptical of the value of a degree today—only a third say college is worth the cost if loans are required.

Maybe these findings shouldn’t be surprising. Total student debt in the U.S. has surpassed $1.6 trillion, with the average loan balance topping $29,000 for 2021-22 graduates . Published tuition prices have ticked up year after year, with some universities now charging more than $80,000 a year for tuition, fees, room and board (though at most private universities, very few, if any, students pay that price out of pocket ).

While Americans have been souring on higher education, inflation-adjusted earnings for young adults (aged 25 to 34) without college degrees have risen over the past decade, after three decades of decline for men and stagnation for women, the Pew study shows. But the earnings of men are still not as high as they were in 1970 and the earnings gap with college graduates hasn’t closed. As for young women without college degrees, their earnings have been fairly stable since 1970, but are still far lower than for their male counterparts, or for better educated women.

In 2023, young men with a bachelor’s degree earned a median of $77,000, 71% more than the $45,000 median for men with only a high school diploma, while young women with a bachelor’s degree earned a median of $65,000, 81% more than the $36,000 median for women with only a high school diploma. (The salary figures are adjusted for inflation using 2022 dollars. It’s worth noting that current median salaries for young men with only high school diplomas are still lower than the median in 1970, which was $57,000.) The majority of the nation’s younger workers have not completed college. Of the 36 million workers in the U.S. aged 25 to 34, 19 million have completed only some college or less.

At the same time, after decades of degree-requirement inflation, employers have started to modify their job postings—a number of companies have removed degree requirements from their job listings, instead focusing on “skills-based hiring” strategies. (That said, a recent study found that most employers who have publicly embraced this strategy aren’t yet hiring more workers without college degrees for the reclassified jobs.)

All these trends likely contributed to what Pew found was a growing belief among the American public that a college degree isn’t as necessary to get a good job. Among all adults surveyed, 49% said a college degree was less important than 20 years ago when it comes to getting a well-paying job, while only 32% said it was more important. Republicans have soured more on the value of a degree—57% said it was less important and only 27% more important than two decades ago. But even Democrats are having doubts—43% said a degree was less important and 39% said it was more important.

Overall, only 25% of adults say that today it’s very or extremely important to have a four-year degree to get a well-paying job, while another 35% say it’s somewhat important, and 40% say it's not too or not at all important.

Pew surveyed 5,203 U.S. adults between Nov. 23 and Dec. 3, 2023 as part of its American Trends Panel, an online survey that selects participants using a random sampling of addresses. The results are weighted to be representative of the entire adult population with respect to race, gender, ethnicity and partisan affiliation. The study also relied on data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Federal Reserve.

We asked Americans what they think about the value of a four-year college degree from a few different angles:

• Is a degree important in order for someone to get a well-paying job in today’s economy?
• Has the value of a degree changed in recent decades?
• Can someone without a degree get a well-paying job?
• How useful do people think their own education was in preparing them for a well-paying job?
• Is the cost of college worth it today?

Four-in-ten Americans say it is not too or not at all important to have a four-year college degree in order to get a well-paying job in today’s economy.

Only 25% say it’s extremely or very important to have a college degree, and 35% say it’s somewhat important.

We also asked the public about the importance of a college degree now versus 20 years ago.

About half of Americans (49%) say it’s less important today than it was in the past for someone to have a four-year degree in order to get a well-paying job. About a third (32%) say having a degree is more important now, and 17% say its importance hasn’t really changed.

Differences by party

Half of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents – compared with 30% of Democrats and Democratic leaners – say it’s not too or not at all important to have a four-year college degree to get a well-paying job.

And a majority of Republicans (57%) say having a degree is less important today than it was 20 years ago; 43% of Democrats say the same.

These partisan gaps hold even after controlling for differences in the educational attainment of Republicans and Democrats.

Differences by education

College graduates are more likely than those with less education to say that having a college degree is extremely or very important (30% vs. 22%).

But views on whether having a college degree is more or less important today than it was 20 years ago don’t differ significantly by education. Roughly half of four-year college graduates (51%) and those with less education (48%) say it’s less important today for someone to have a college degree than it was in the past.

Adults with a postgraduate degree, however, have somewhat different views than those with a bachelor’s degree on both of these measures. Some 35% of postgraduates say it’s extremely or very important to have a four-year college degree in order to get a well-paying job, compared with 27% of those whose highest attainment is a bachelor’s degree.

And 39% of postgraduates – compared with 30% of those with a bachelor’s degree – say it’s more important to have a college degree today than it was 20 years ago.

Differences by age

Young adults stand out in their views on the importance of a college degree today versus in the past.

Among those ages 18 to 29, 44% say having a degree is more important today in order to get a well-paying job than it was 20 years ago. By comparison, 29% of those 30 to 49 and 30% of those 50 and older say the same.

Americans also have mixed views when it comes to whether someone without a four-year college degree could get a well-paying job in today’s economy.

Only about a third (34%) say it’s extremely or very likely that someone withouta four-year degree could get this kind of job.

Nearly half say it’s somewhat likely that someone without a college degree could get a well-paying job, and 20% say it’s not too or not at all likely.

These views differ by:

• Partisanship: 42% of Republicans and 26% of Democrats say it’s extremely or very likely someone without a four-year degree could get a well-paying job. Among Democrats, 25% say it’s not too or not at all likely; just 15% of Republicans say the same.
• Education: 28% of adults with at least a bachelor’s degree say it’s extremely or very likely that someone without a college degree could get a well-paying job today. This compares with 37% of those with some college and 36% of those with a high school diploma or less education.

When thinking about how useful their own education was in giving them the skills and knowledge needed to get a well-paying job, a majority of those with a four-year college degree or more education (58%) say it was extremely or very useful. (This finding excludes the 9% of respondents who said this question did not apply to them.)

Adults with a postgraduate degree are especially likely to say their education was extremely or very useful: 72% say this, compared with 47% of those whose highest attainment is a bachelor’s.

By comparison, adults with less education have more mixed views. Among those who have not completed a bachelor’s degree, 38% say their education was not too or not at all useful in giving them the skills and knowledge needed to get a well-paying job; 35% say it was somewhat useful, and 26% say it was extremely or very useful.

These views don’t differ as substantially by age or by party.

When asked about the cost of college these days, many Americans question whether it’s worth it if a student has to take on debt. Nearly half of adults (47%) say a four-year college degree is worth the cost, but only if someone doesn’t have to take out loans in order to attend.

Only 22% say college is worth the cost even if someone has to take out loans. And 29% say college isn’t worth the cost.

Meanwhile, data from the Federal Reserve shows that more than four-in-ten adults who attended college say they took out student loans for their education .

Views on the value of college differ by partisanship, education and age. But notably, in all groups except for Republicans, pluralities say the cost of college is worth it only if someone doesn’t have to take out loans.

A narrow majority of Democrats (54%) say the cost of getting a four-year college degree is worth it, but only if someone doesn’t have to take out loans. A smaller share of Republicans (41%) say the same.

About one-in-four Democrats (26%), compared with 19% of Republicans, say the cost is worth it even with loans.

Republicans are twice as likely as Democrats to say college is not worth the cost (38% vs. 19%).

Americans with at least a four-year college degree are much more likely than those with less education to say that college is worth the cost even if someone has to take out loans (32% vs. 17%).

Those with a postgraduate degree are among the most likely to express this view: 37% say college is worth the cost even after taking out loans. This compares with 29% among those with a bachelor’s but no postgraduate degree.

Even so, across all education levels, more say a four-year degree is worth the cost only if someone doesn’t take on debt than say it’s worth the cost with debt.

Those with some college or less education are about twice as likely as those with at least a bachelor’s degree to say the cost of getting a degree isn’t worth it at all (35% vs. 18%).

Young adults are more likely than their older counterparts to say the cost of a degree is worth it only if someone doesn’t take out loans: 55% of those ages 18 to 29 say this, compared with 48% of those 30 to 49 and 44% of those 50 and older.

And 18- to 29-year-olds are less likely to say the cost isn’t worth it at all (22% vs. roughly three-in-ten among older age groups).

12 Jobs That Are Surprisingly High-Paying with No Degree Required

Who says you need a four-year degree to land a high-paying job?  The traditional path of heading straight from high school to college  isn’t  for  everyone , and that’s totally cool.  There are plenty of lucrative career options out there that don’t require a sheepskin. Whether you’re looking to bypass student loans or jump straight into the workforce, check out these surprisingly high-paying jobs where your skills and experience can  truly  pay off—no degree required.

1. Commercial Pilot

Forget the  major  airline pilot route that requires intense training and a college degree. Becoming a commercial pilot for  smaller  operations—like scenic or charter flights—can be a less conventional but exciting high-paying option. 

You’ll need to get your pilot’s license from the FAA, which involves flight training and passing several tests, but no college degree is necessary. Commercial pilots get to travel to unique destinations and enjoy stunning views from the cockpit, making this job not only lucrative but also incredibly rewarding and adventurous.

2. Elevator Installer and Repairer

This job might go under the radar, but it’s literally about keeping things moving smoothly. Elevator installers and repairers are essential in making sure that elevators, escalators, moving walkways, and other lifts operate safely and efficiently. 

Most of this training is done through apprenticeships where you learn on the job, earning while you learn. It’s a role that requires precision and problem-solving skills, and it comes with a solid paycheck due to the specialized skill set and potential for overtime.

3. Nuclear Power Reactor Operator

Operating a nuclear power reactor might sound intense—and it is—but it’s also incredibly well-compensated. Operators control  nuclear  reactors, monitor systems, and implement safety procedures to ensure everything runs without a meltdown. 

The position typically requires a high school diploma and extensive on-the-job training, plus passing a licensing exam. It’s a critical role that pays well due to the high responsibility and specialized knowledge required to keep everything running safely.

4. Detective or Criminal Investigator

Who knew that solving mysteries could be so profitable? Detectives and criminal investigators work to solve crimes and enforce laws, often without needing a college degree. 

While some agencies might require some college coursework, many roles only ask for a high school diploma and provide on-the-job training. This career not only pays well but also offers the satisfaction of serving justice and the thrill of piecing together clues.

5. Commercial Diver

If you love the water, becoming a commercial diver might be your ticket to a high-paying career. Commercial divers work on underwater construction, salvage operations, and inspection jobs, among other tasks.

Divers must complete a diving training certification and are often required to pass physical and skills tests. The job can be physically demanding and sometimes hazardous , but it’s  also exhilarating and pays well, especially for more specialized diving roles.

6. Web Developer

In the digital age, every company needs a good website, and for that, they turn to web developers. Web developers create and design websites, ensuring they are both aesthetically pleasing and functional. 

A degree in computer science is  common , but many successful web developers are self-taught or have completed coding  bootcamps .  If you have a knack for coding and design, you can build a portfolio that might  just  land you a high-paying job without the need for a formal degree.

7. Power Plant Operator

Power plant operators manage the systems that generate and distribute electric power. Like nuclear reactor operators, this job doesn’t typically require a college degree but does require extensive on-the-job training. 

Operators need to understand complex systems and be able to respond to power demands and emergencies. It’s a critical role that ensures communities keep their lights on and their homes warm , and it  comes with a paycheck to match the responsibility.

8. Transportation Inspector

Transportation inspectors ensure that equipment and goods related to transit are in top shape and meet safety standards. This can include inspecting anything from trucks and airplanes to rail systems. 

Most inspectors are trained on the job, although some background in mechanics or a related field can be helpful. It’s a role that combines technical skills with safety compliance, offering good pay for those who like to stay on the move and keep their eyes peeled for details.

9. Firefighting Supervisor

Leading a team of firefighters into burning buildings might be as intense as jobs come , but it’s  also one that rewards well, especially in supervisory roles. Firefighting supervisors coordinate  fire fighting  efforts and often engage in the more administrative and strategic aspects of the job. Climbing the ladder in this career usually requires years of experience as a firefighter and passing rigorous exams , but it  doesn’t necessarily  require  a college degree.

10. Postmaster

Running the local post office is another role where you might not need a college degree. Postmasters manage the operations of postal facilities, including handling customer service issues, supervising staff, and ensuring the mail is sorted and delivered. 

The position requires working up through the ranks of the postal service, which provides on-the-job training and a good understanding of mail service operations. It’s a community-centered job that pays well and keeps you at the heart of daily life.

11. Real Estate Broker

Real estate brokers facilitate the buying and selling of properties and, unlike agents, can own their own businesses. To become a broker, one typically needs to start as an agent, gain experience, and then pass a broker’s license exam. The income potential is high, especially in hot markets, and depends  largely  on one’s ability to negotiate deals, understand the market, and provide exceptional customer service.

12. Gaming Manager

Running a casino floor is as high-stakes as the games played on it, making the role of a gaming manager both crucial and lucrative. Gaming managers oversee gaming operations and staff within a casino. They ensure that all gambling laws and regulations are followed and that high standards of customer service are met. This role requires a detailed understanding of casino operations, often gained through years of experience in the industry.

Unconventional Paths to Success

These twelve jobs prove that there are many paths to achieving a high-paying career without the need for a traditional college degree. WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
