Cannes, France

Located on the world-famous Côte d'Azur, this resort town boasts an impressive collection of museums and art galleries, botanical gardens, Gothic-style churches and a theater district that hosts the renowned international film festival. Those less interested in the arts can check out the casinos, discos and nightclubs that make nightlife in Cannes legendary. Sandy Mediterranean beaches draw sunbathers from all of Europe, and the shimmering blue waters fill with sailboats in the summer. It's no wonder Cannes is known as the "star" of the French Riviera.

Has anybody done the hop on/hop off bus tour from Cannes? It takes you to Monte-Carlo with some stops along the way. Thinking this sounds like a good tour. Thoughts?

Maybe.  What are the stops?

If I did it, I would do it on my own, not through the cruise line.

I see an NCL excursion named "Monaco Hop on Hop Off".   Is this the excursion you are referring to?

"See the attractions that you find most appealing and stay as long as you wish by hopping on and off buses as they make a continuous loop around Monte Carlo. There are a dozen stops along the route, so you will have plenty of options. You could even remain on board the whole time and take in the sights through the windows or from atop the double-deck bus. The amount of time that you spend at each destination will be entirely up to you.     You might hop off at the Oceanographic Museum, the opulent Monte Carlo Casino and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, where in 1956 Prince Rainier II married Grace Kelly. The Princess Grace Rose Garden that the prince created as a poignant monument to his late wife is another popular spot. You will hear commentary along the way that describes the upcoming attractions, so you can easily pick the ones that sound best to you."

This sounds like a regular Monaco HOHO bus, which probably doesn't actually come into Cannes, I would think.  So I suspect you will be bused to Monaco from the ship to a HOHO stop location.  Then you're on your own.  I don't think the stops are between Cannes and Monaco.  Not that there's anything wrong with that.  And you will be riding it with non-cruise passengers.

HOHO buses can be very busy in peak season and you sometimes have to wait for the next bus.  So the experience can be impacted by how often buses actually come by.  This is mentioned in the NOTE at the bottom of the excursion webpage.

This is the one port I want to do through cruise ship, purely because the times are tight so this way we don't have to stress about getting back in time or about having the tour leave without us while we are tendering.

Yes, this is the one! We start in Cannes so we will explore Cannes on our own (Don't think we need much time to explore there tho). And yes, it does go straight to Monte-Carlo, I prob didn't make that clear...I'm ok with non-cruise passengers. Hoping that in May, maybeeee the lines will not be as long? IDK tho.

Hoping that in May, maybeeee the lines will not be as long? IDK tho.

Unfortunately might be busier than you expect although it will depend on your date. Two important dates to  be avoided if possible..

Every year in the month of May the Cannes Film Festival takes place and Cannes and most of the other  towns both inland and coastal are packed out.

And Monaco hosts the Monaco Grand Prix every May. Preparatory works will begin at least one week before and the clear up takes several days afterwards. We have visited the day after and Monaco was an incredible mess and super noisy as metal barricades and stands  etc were removed and  many huge lorries were parked up waiting to be loaded before moving off. Several  centrally located roads along the F1 route were closed to traffic.  Fortunately we had visited previously and were able to plan our day away from the noisy and closed areas.

Best compare dates for both events with yours  and hope your day there doesn't fall on either event.

Oh boy, we will actually be in Cannes at the beginning of the film festival...will need to check the Grtand Prix dates tho. We went ahead and decided to book a semi-private tour through the cruise ship due to the short time frames, etc....wanted to be on the safe side in this port, especially with the tendering process. Thank you for the response!

Thanks for acknowledging as not everyone does.

Excellent Advice!

I will again mention that it is at least a 1 hour drive from Cannes to Monte Carlo.  If one does it along the coastal route it would likely be about 1 1/2 hours (each way) because this route involves many smaller towns, lights, and traffic.

For folks wanting to simply go to Monte Carlo (from Cannes) we think the best way is to simply take the train.  There is a regional "TER" train that spans the entire coast including Cannes all the way to Menton.  That train has stops in places like Antibes, Cagnes sur Mer, and Nice before getting to Monte Carlo.  It is a commuter-type train with no reservations and runs quite often.  One can walk to the Cannes train station in about 30-40 minutes (from the tender pier) so it does make sense to try and get a taxi.  It is the same in Monte Carlo (the train station is too far from most tourist areas) where using the local buses or a taxi makes sense.

Thank you. We decided to go through the cruise line for this tour instead of doing it ourselves. Due to the right time frame, this way we are guaranteed the ship will wait for us (right?)

Cannes cruise port

Region Mediterranean - Black Sea

Local Time 2024-06-29 18:20

Port Cannes cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Cannes, France Riviera. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Cannes is a cruise port and a French Riviera city part of France's Alpes-Maritimes department. The city covers a total area of approx 10 km2 (8 mi2) and has population around 75,000.

The city's most famous event is the annual Film Festival. The second popular event is the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.

The economic environment of Cannes is based on business fairs, trade, tourism and aviation. Cannes features ~6500 companies, of which ~3000 are artisans, service providers and traders. The port city hosts Cannes Mandelieu Space Center, headquarters of the first European satellite manufacturer, Thales Alenia Space.

The Promenade de la Croisette is Cannes' waterfront avenue decorated with palm trees. It is popular for its picturesque beaches, cafes, restaurants and boutiques. The old town, Le Suquet, provides a magnificent view of La Croisette. The Chapel of St Anne and the fortified tower house Musee de la Castre. An outstanding building in the city of Cannes is also the Russian Orthodox church.

Cannes cruise port serves as a gateway to other French Riviera resorts, like Nice . It is also a great stop on the way to Monte Carlo . The port welcomes cruise ships operated by major passenger shipping lines, including Royal Caribbean, Princess, Celebrity, AIDA, Cunard, also the luxury cruise lines Azamara, Seabourn, Oceania, SeaDream Yacht Club, Windstar. The total number of cruise ship passengers to Cannes in 2012 was 339,155.

The list of  French Riviera (Cote d'Azur)  ports also includes  Antibes ,  Bandol ,  Cassis ,  Marseille ,  Sanary-sur-Mer ,  St Raphael ,  St Tropez ,  Toulon ,  Villefranche-sur-Mer (Nice)  and  Monte Carlo (Monaco) .

Cannes cruise terminal

Cannes cruise port is a tender port as it is too small to accommodate larger-sized cruise vessels (except some mega yachts). Large ships anchor in the bay and via the ship's tender boats passengers are tendered ashore to the Old Port (Le Vieux Port).

The Cannes cruise ship terminal is new and offer all necessary facilities and modern amenities. You can reach the town walking or by taxi (rank is located in front the terminal building). There is a local bus service and the rate is one euro. The city can be explored via trolley (Le Train du Cinema). The closest stop to Cannes cruise port terminal is La Croisette.

Tourist information center is in Palais des Festivals, on the ground floor. The building is a few blocks from Cannes cruise port tender dock (1 Boulevard de la Croisette).

Cannes Airport is 10 minutes away., and Airport Nice Cote d’Azur is 1/2 hour from Cannes cruise port.

  • La Croisette: the famous promenade curves around the seafront. Everything here will look beautiful to you. You can see the locals – hanging around with their families, tanned women, young people, rolerbladers, joggers and even clown. If you are here during the Cannnes Filn Festival, you will surely meet a few stars around.
  • Palais des Festivals: you won’t be impressed by the building itself. The latest improvement of the building was the exterior change – now it is bright white, the backdrop for all celebrities’ photos.
  • Musée de la Castre: located on Place de la Castre (atop Suquet Hill). The museum holds many different collection from archeological to musical. There is also an amazing view from the tower’s top (but you will need to climb 109 steps).
  • Ile Ste-Marguérite: Ile Ste-Marguérite and Ile St-Honora are two amazing island located 15 minutes from Cannes cruise port. You can catch a ferry from Quai Laubeuf (old port’s western side). You can enjoy the air and the nature of those islands or visit Fort Royal (on Ile Ste-Marguérite).

  23. insanely expensive excursions : r/NCL

It's your destination. I have a NCL Caribbean cruise booked (and had previous sailings too) that were free to $150 with the $50 off. However when I sailed NCL in Alaska I don't think anything was under $100 and I went third party and still spent $500 for 3 excursions. When I was in Europe most of the excursions were similarly priced.
