Mitchell KOA Journey

41255 SD-38, Mitchell, SD

Mitchell KOA Journey welcomes you to their campground! They’re located between two exits of I-90, yet it’s peaceful and quiet. They’re outside of town a few miles, giving you a better view of the night sky.

The World’s Only Corn Palace helped to put Mitchell on the map. It was established in 1892 and has been at its present location since 1921. Each year, the structure is stripped and decorated anew! The murals are formed by thousands of bushels of corn, grasses, grains, and other products, each celebrating South Dakota’s bounty. The Palace is actually mentioned in the book 1,000 Places to See in the USA and Canada Before You Die , and many more travel guides.

Afterward, visit the Dakota Discovery Museum to learn about the local and regional history. Hear and see about the lives of the Plains Indians. Check out what it was like for fur traders. The Dakota Territory, Railroading, Farming & Ranching, and the 1930s Great Depression is quite interesting, and the museum is quite educational.

Later, maybe even the next day, take in the local art gallery, which displays works from various artists.

Outdoors enthusiasts enjoy Cabela’s, which is just minutes away and conveniently located off I-90 at exit 332.

THE CAMPGROUND

The campground offers tent sites, camping cabins, and RV sites with a variety of lengths, including ones long enough for big rigs and tow cars.

Aside from lodging, they also offer ways for families to have fun. Give in to mini-golf, or bike rentals, and there’s a new playground clubhouse with three towers. You’ll find various yard games & ice cream treats to keep kids of all ages entertained.

When you feel like shopping, be sure to stop into the general store. They stock a variety of RV supplies, drinks, ice, snacks & souvenirs.

The electric car (EV) charger is a Tesla wall charger.

After camping here, you’ll likely be fully rested and ready for the road again!

FIREWOOD NOTE

Don’t bring out-of-state firewood. It isn’t allowed. Each campers has an active role in preventing the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer Beetle, Asian Gypsy Moth, and the Asian Longhorned Beetle. The campground has approved firewood available for sale.

Thank you for your understanding & cooperation.

Rolled in yesterday. Got a large pull thru site. Beautiful campgrounds! Well kept, clean, leaves are changing. Several tornado shelters around camp. Met some other people here pheasant hunting too. Large wind turbine and it never stops! So yes it's always windy here. They even have a Tesla charger for electric vehicles!

This is a cute little KOA tucked between some farmland off 1-90 just east of Mitchell. A good stopover spot with its friendly owner onsite. Probably the best feature of the campground is its enormous trees which offer ample shade to most sites. It is an older park and a little worn around the edges but overall well-maintained. The layout of sites makes turns a little tight in places especially for longer rigs with toads. You’ll find all the requisite KOA amenities like mini-golf, playground, pool, etc. Convenient to shops and restaurants of Mitchell and the Corn Palace which unfortunately our breakneck schedule caused us to miss.

Not as close to interstate as most KOA's which makes it quieter. The owners are very nice and friendly. Lots of shade from trees and mostly grass in the park except for the gravel sites.

This is the only KOA we've ever stayed at, and it delivered just what we needed when we passed through Mitchell: easy access, shade, and hookups for a night. The owners were friendly and the campground was clean and quiet. Can't ask for more. It's an easy drive into downtown for the required Corn Palace visit.

I found this park at the last minute and was concerned because a couple of reviews mentioned “highway noise”. I’m a super light sleeper in a Class B Airstream and I heard nothing. Beautiful grounds and very peaceful. The bathroom/shower room was beautifully decorated and immaculate. I would definitely recommend.

You always hear the horror stories of parks and their WiFi, or lack thereof. This place certainly doesn’t fit the typical mold. Walked around the parameter of the campground and was consistently getting 10mbps down and up, enough for me to work an entire workday on the park’s WiFi.

Otherwise this was a nice little gem of a campground with lots of shaded sites. The only spots without shade were some of the tent sites, but even most tent sites had shade.

Clean restrooms, convenient to I-90 but could barely hear the freeway noise. I know a lot of folks shy away from KOAs and in some cases, rightfully so, however this was a pleasant surprise.

Our overnight here was quiet & shady. Easy access from I-90. Staff is friendly & helpful. Received 2 cute little red plaid can sleeves as gifts. 😀

Our site was pull through. Had fire pit & picnic table. No sewer but for our overnight was fine for us. Had 50 amp & water. Site was long enough that there was no need to unhitch! 👍🏻

We didn’t use bathrooms here or the laundry. Sadly for us, it’ll have to be next visit to use the pool as well.

Stayed from 7/2/23-7/5/23 and it was a great experience! They have lots of fun options for the kids to enjoy; putt putt, basketball, croquet, checkers, jenga, pool area and more! The spaces are decently sized so you have enough space to enjoy sitting outside without being on top of your neighbor. Bathrooms were nice and clean, personal showers available and lots of picnic tables around to sit and enjoy the weather. The staff did a cook out for the Fourth of July with lots of food and music. It was great! The weather dampened it a bit but everyone was in great spirits regardless. We would definitely recommend RJourney to any future travelers!

We tried to cancel our reservation, we broke down and have to go home for repairs. No refunds, no credits, but can move to another date, not to another Rjourney campground on the way back home. Beware, your money is gone with a reservation.

Day 3 of our 4 day stay and what a great little Rv park! Huge pull thru sites and the hookups are close so no having to use extensions on your sewer pipes. Great quiet location and super convenient withCamping World right next door! Bathrooms are very clean and the pool is nice as well. Would definitely stay here again!

The WORST company I've ever dealt with in my 8 years RVing. Management is awful. Asked to postpone arrival because my husband diagnosed today with COVID. Would not postpone our arrival and no refund of two nights prepaid! I should have read reviews online, because every review was a 1 star because there are no minus stars available. Horrible people.

We're truly sorry to hear about your situation, and we empathize with the challenges you're facing. Our cancellation policy requires notice at least one day prior to arrival for postponements. Unfortunately, as it was the day of your scheduled arrival, a refund was not possible. We appreciate your understanding and wish your husband a swift recovery.

We have been traveling in our rv for my husbands work for a couple years now. We have been in Texas, Washington, Colorado, and California. This is by far the best maintained and quality Park we have been in. The KOA's have been the worst. Terrible and sky high prices. This park here is so clean. No mud. There's gravel here. Great dog park. Mini golf, bikes to rent and more. The office and people that work here have been just wonderful! We hate having to move on. Very accommodating. This is the spot for comfort and fun. We are going to miss out on the pool opening by 2 weeks. Wish we didn't have to. The pool is beautiful. And the downtown buildings from the 1800's are the most decorated and beautiful buildings I have ever seen. And they have kept them maintained and use. Just beautiful. Just all around awesome here!!!

Regardless of what website states the sites are all only 45-50 feet. Hard to maneuver getting in and out. Our 43 foot fifth wheel barely fit in the site. We had to squeeze our dually in between us and our neighbor. Motorhomes barely fit and if the had a towed vehicle it stuck out in thr road. Management knows their website is wrong but makes excuses about it used to be a KOA. We were told they are upgrading. I would call and see if they have upgraded the sites yet. Also, aggressive dogs are allowed.

Management has a lot of problems! They treat their employees poorly. I was asked to move with less than 24 hours notice. They up charge for electric and gas. I will never go back.

Jul 25, 2023

Thank you for sharing your experience at Cheyenne RV Resort. We apologize for any inconvenience you experienced during your stay. Our policy for charging for electricity applies only to monthly renters, and we do charge for propane, as it is a common practice in RV parks. As for the issue of being asked to move with less than 24 hours notice, we take this matter seriously and would like to learn more about your situation to understand what happened and ensure that it doesn't happen again in the future. We value our guests and their experiences, and we want to make sure that we address any concerns or issues promptly. Regarding the comment about the management and employee treatment, we are committed to creating a positive and respectful work environment for all our employees. If you have specific concerns or feedback about this matter, please do not hesitate to reach out to us directly.

I should have known this place would suck from the beginning when I walked in there was a lady trying to explain why she had to take someone's deposit with no refund. She was totally uncompassionate and just said it's our practice to keep your deposit if you don't cancel within 48 hours and the person on the phone hung up on her. Lol. I was really tired and I decided to go ahead and stay....their bill was $43 for a tent spot! I told him that I paid $27 the night before in Sioux Falls South Dakota. Greedy wanker smiled and told me they have mini golf. Later he told us to quit lighting fireworks.... it was 7:30, and almost 4th of July in Wyoming. Again this place sucks, it's always windy and when your sleeping you will hear the highway which is very annoying. Do yourself a favor and keep driving.

Absolutely loved this campground. Everything was so clean and organized. The office staff was so pleasant and accommodating. We ended up moving to a cabin from our tent site on our last night due to wind, and it was a smooth transfer. The tent site was well kept, just wish the road noise wasn't so loud. The cabin was adorable, clean & cozy. It's a great place to stop and sleep, or stay and play. They have a pool and mini golf for the kids. Dog park for the fur babies! You are minutes away from Terry Bison Ranch (highly recommend) and from lots of restaurants! We will return! Thank you!
