Understanding eSIM Technology

What is an esim.

An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a small chip embedded in your device that serves the same purpose as a physical SIM card. The main difference is that you don’t need to insert or swap it in and out of your device. Instead, the eSIM can be programmed remotely to connect to different mobile networks, making it a convenient solution for travelers, especially for those going on cruises.

The Benefits of Using an eSIM While Cruising

When cruising, using an eSIM can offer you several advantages. Firstly, it eliminates the need to physically change SIM cards, which can be tricky and inconvenient onboard a ship. With an eSIM, you can seamlessly switch between local networks at different ports without any hassle.

Secondly, as eSIMs can be reprogrammed remotely, you can easily connect to preferred local networks at various cruise destinations, ensuring you have the best coverage and connectivity throughout your voyage.

Additionally, eSIM technology often provides better security features compared to traditional SIM cards, offering enhanced protection for your data and privacy while traveling.

By utilizing an eSIM on your cruise travels, you can stay connected effortlessly, enjoy better coverage, and ensure a smoother communication experience during your maritime adventures.

How eSIMs Work on Cruises

Esim compatibility with cruise lines.

When it comes to eSIMs, compatibility with cruise lines is essential for seamless connectivity during your maritime adventures. Most major cruise lines now support eSIM technology, allowing you to stay connected even in the middle of the ocean. Whether you’re cruising with popular lines like Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, or Carnival Cruise Line, you’ll likely find eSIM support on board.

Utilizing eSIMs with Cruise Line Partners

Cruise line partnerships with eSIM providers ensure that you can easily activate your eSIM for connectivity as soon as you board the ship. Companies like Gigsky and Truphone offer eSIM plans tailored specifically for cruise travelers, providing hassle-free access to mobile networks while at sea. These partnerships enhance your cruising experience by eliminating the need to search for local SIM cards at every port of call.

Internet Access at Sea: What to Expect

When it comes to internet access at sea, understanding what to expect can help you plan your communication needs effectively. While cruising, you can expect varying levels of internet connectivity depending on the cruise line and your location at sea.

Cruise Ship Internet Packages

Cruise ships typically offer internet packages that vary in speed and data limits. These packages range from basic messaging plans to premium high-speed options for streaming and video calls. Before embarking on your cruise, check with the cruise line about available internet packages to select one that suits your connectivity requirements.

Connectivity in Ports of Call

While docked at different ports during your cruise, you can take advantage of local Wi-Fi networks to stay connected without relying solely on your eSIM or onboard ship internet. Many ports offer free Wi-Fi in areas frequented by tourists, such as shopping districts and visitor centers. It’s advisable to research the availability of Wi-Fi in advance to plan your connectivity options accordingly.

By leveraging eSIM technology and understanding internet access realities at sea, you’ll be well-equipped to stay connected, share your cruise adventures, and communicate with loved ones effortlessly during your maritime journey.

Top eSIM Providers for Cruise Travelers

Criteria for choosing the best esim.

When selecting an eSIM provider for your cruise travels, focus on compatibility with major cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Carnival Cruise Line. Ensure that the eSIM supports the networks available on these cruise ships, allowing you to stay connected seamlessly throughout your journey.

Look for eSIM providers that offer flexible data plans tailored for cruise travelers. These plans should provide sufficient data for browsing, messaging, and emailing while aboard the ship or in port. Consider the coverage in different regions that the eSIM provider offers, especially if your cruise itinerary includes various international destinations.

Check for additional features such as network security and customer support. A reliable eSIM provider should prioritize data security to protect your information while traveling. Access to customer support in case of any connectivity issues can also enhance your overall experience with the eSIM.

  • GigSky is a well-known eSIM provider with partnerships with major cruise lines. They offer specific data plans designed for cruise travel, ensuring you have internet access at sea.
  • Truphone is another reputable eSIM provider that caters to cruise travelers. Their eSIM packages include data options suitable for staying connected during your maritime adventures.
  • KeepGo provides eSIM solutions suitable for cruise vacations. Their eSIM packages offer competitive data rates and reliable connectivity on cruise ships and at ports of call.

By considering these criteria and exploring the recommended eSIM packages, you can select the best option to stay connected during your cruise travels seamlessly.

Staying Connected Responsibly

When cruising with an eSIM, it’s crucial to manage your connectivity responsibly to avoid unexpected charges and ensure uninterrupted communication. Here’s how you can stay connected responsibly:

  • Use Offline Maps and Content : Download maps, entertainment, and essential information for offline use before embarking on your cruise. This ensures you can access crucial data without consuming data or needing a network connection while at sea.
  • Opt For Data-Enabled Messaging Apps : Consider using messaging apps that support data messaging, such as WhatsApp or iMessage, to communicate without using traditional SMS. This can be a cost-effective way to stay in touch with fellow travelers and loved ones.

Dealing with Connectivity Issues

While eSIMs offer great flexibility, connectivity issues can still arise during your cruise. Here are some practical tips to address connectivity challenges:

  • Reset Network Settings : If you encounter connectivity issues, try resetting your network settings on your device. This can help resolve common network-related problems and ensure a smoother connection experience.
  • Switch Roaming Options : Depending on your eSIM provider and the cruise destination, you may need to adjust your roaming settings. Explore different roaming options available through your eSIM provider to find the most suitable configuration for your needs.
  • Contact Customer Support : In case of persistent connectivity issues, don’t hesitate to reach out to your eSIM provider’s customer support. They can offer troubleshooting guidance tailored to your specific concern and help resolve any technical difficulties you may face.
  • Reboot Your Device : Sometimes, a simple device reboot can solve connectivity issues. If you notice prolonged connectivity problems, try restarting your phone to refresh the network connection and potentially regain stable connectivity.
  • Seek Ship Wi-Fi Assistance : If onboard Wi-Fi is provided, consult the ship’s IT support for assistance with connectivity problems. They can help troubleshoot Wi-Fi issues and provide guidance on optimizing your connection within the cruise ship’s network.

By following these tips, you can ensure a smooth and reliable eSIM experience during your cruise, staying connected responsibly and addressing any connectivity challenges that may arise.

The Best Sim For Cruises in 2024: eSim Cruise Packages!

We’ve all been there; sat on the deck of a ship, cocktail in hand on a bright and sunny afternoon with the gentle sea breeze blowing through our toupee. Then suddenly you jolt up with the horrific realisation that you’ve in fact, not shared this with all your mates on Facebook.

The spotty free wifi of that Bermudan cafe is several hundred nautical miles away and you’ve got a full day at sea before you hit up the Cayman Islands. Well, that’s this cruise ruined! That is until your fellow traveller introduces you to GigSky’s Cruise Package, an eSim that offers data packages across multiple countries for us on land, sea and at ports.

Forget paying huge sums of money for onboard WiFi or being paranoid about switching your phone on when you arrive in a new port. This way you can be sure to stay connected to friends and family back home whilst you’re out there sailing the high seas!

So, let’s take a deep dive and look into the inner workings GigSky’s magical mystery package of roaming internet goodness.

Choosing a SIM Card For Cruises – Things To Consider

Can you buy a sim for cruises, pros and cons, final thoughts on a sim for cruises.

  • Buy Us a Coffee!

So, you’ve decided you want to be able to use your phone whilst on your trip, but now you’re wondering what is the best international sim and how to avoid data roaming charges on a cruise. Well, an eSim is by far the best and most convenient way to stay connected whilst you’re travelling, be that on a cruise or any other trip for that matter.

But when it comes to cruising there are some very specific requirements of an eSim that you just don’t have to worry about if you’re planning on staying on dry land or in one country.

Does The Ship Have WiFi

The first thing you’ll want to consider before investing in GigSky’s Cruise Package is whether or not your cruise ship has WiFi itself. Now this isn’t as cut and dry as it seems, there are still a few considerations you’ll want to think about before just opting for the ship WiFi.

Firstly, WiFi on board cruise ships tends to be very expensive and you’ll often be charged per day and possibly even per device. I’ve seen some prices quoted at around $16-$30 a day, which frankly is extortionate.

The upside of ship WiFi is that for the period you’ve paid for, it does tend to be unlimited. Meaning you can stream and post to your heart’s content for the 24 hours you’ve shelled out for.

The other main downside to using your ship’s WiFi, beyond the eye-watering cost, is that it only works whilst onboard. So if you do shell out you better make sure it’s a sea day to make the most of it!

How Many Ports Are You Visiting

Another important consideration before buying GigSky’s Cruise Package is how many ports you will be calling into.

If you’ll be only visiting one country, then simply purchasing an eSim for that country might work out best for you. But in reality, with a cruise, you’ll most likely be stopping in multiple locations in several different countries.

Buying an eSim for each country and/or port you stop in might seem like the obvious solution to staying connected whilst cruising. However, this can quickly end up wracking up in cost and keeping track of which eSim is for which country and remembering to activate them whilst connected in the previous port is a job in itself, trust me!

woman on a catamaran taking a photo

Will Your Own Sim Work?

Whilst each network provider will have their own specific policies and availability when it comes to connecting to local networks and data roaming, as a general rule your own sim will probably work to at least some degree whilst overseas.

However, there are two very large and important caveats.

The first is that your own SIM card will only work when you’re in range of land or a good signal. Put simply, your provider will have a deal with a local network and you’ll connect to them when you’re in range. So, as a general rule, your SIM won’t work whilst you’re at sea. The other concern is that occasionally, SIM cards can just not connect for a variety of different and highly frustrating reasons.

The second major flaw is money. International minutes and roaming charges can be even more extortionate than onboard WiFi. Costs can spiral out of control if you use your phone at each port and you could end up coming home from the trip of a lifetime with a massive bill. Talk about coming down with a bang!

Do You Need To Receive/Make Phone Calls?

Ok, so the biggest consideration you’re going to have when it comes to choosing GigSky’s eSim Cruise Package is whether or not you’ll want to make and receive phone calls.

Now, when I say phone calls what I mean is actual cellular calls rather than the calls you might receive and make via WiFi and data. So things like WhatsApp, Google Meets, Zoom, Facebook Messenger, Skype or even Facetime (with the correct settings) will all work. But calling your Nan’s landline, for example, will not, unfortunately, even with the best of eSims .

Whilst many establishments such as insurance companies will now be on WhatsApp or have online chat options, there may be specific times when you might want to make cellular calls. This is personal to your situation of course, but I’ve never found it to be an issue.

Why yes indeed you can and I’m here to tell you all about it!

GigSky Land + Sea

The clever folks over at GigSky have put together two revolutionary cruise-specific eSim packages. One for Europe and the other for The Americas/Caribbean . These cover two of the most popular cruising regions and together offer coverage in 95 countries and 200+ ships in each region. So the chances are that your ship and itinerary are well covered.

GigSky coverage is designed to work across the entire region in which you are travelling, whether that be at sea, in port or whilst exploring your destination. Their coverage switches automatically depending on whether you’re at sea or on land, you don’t need to mess with a thing once you’ve got everything set up. This is what makes them one of the best eSim providers on the market.

mediterranean cruise esim

GigSky Land + Sea works by combining two different types of connectivity. Whilst in port and on land your phone will connect to a local network via cell towers in the area. Then, when you leave for the open seas it will switch to its “Cellular at Sea” service. They do say in most cases it can take about an hour once leaving port to make this switch as you must be 12 nautical miles offshore.

It’s this offshore connectivity that really sets GigSky apart from any other regular eSim provider. Sure, you could buy a regional or several country-specific eSims from any number of different providers and they’d work great on shore. But as soon as you’re out of range of the cell towers of each country, you’re out of luck, even with the best travel sim cards .

GigSky offers the following regional data packages:

Cruise+ – Americas/Caribbean

200+ Ships + 49 countries

  • 1 GB $38.99 – 7 Days
  • 3 GB $73.99 – 15 Days

Cruise+ – Europe

200+ Ships + 46 countries

A Word on eSims and How They Work

You might be wondering how all this mysterious and magical data even works! Well, welcome to the world of eSims. These are pretty new but I’ve been using them for the past year or so and they’ve become an essential part of organising any trip for me. They are pretty straightforward but they do take a little getting used to, but the learning curve is pretty shallow.

An eSim works via an app rather than a physical plastic SIM card. This means that you can keep your original SIM card inside your phone and still receive calls and text messages to your phone number, whilst using your installed eSim for data (internet).

Most modern phones and tablets are eSim compatible, but it’s best to check here to be sure . You should also make sure your phone is unlocked.

The most important thing to know about eSims is that they are data only, meaning they work for the internet only and you can’t use them to make or receive cellular calls. They will still work with services like WhatsApp though.

You can check out our guide on eSims for more information.

An eSIM, or embedded Subscriber Identity Module, is a digital version of a traditional SIM card. It’s built into your device and can be programmed remotely. This tiny chip stores your phone number and cellular plan details.

eSIMs can hold multiple profiles. This means you can switch between different carriers without swapping physical cards. For cruise travelers, this feature is a game-changer.

You can activate a new plan while on board without hunting for a local SIM shop. It’s a hassle-free way to stay connected.

Why eSIMs Are a Game-Changer for Cruise Travelers

eSIMs solve many connectivity issues faced by cruise passengers. They offer seamless transitions between land and sea networks. No more scrambling to find Wi-Fi hotspots or dealing with expensive roaming fees.

With an eSIM, you can choose a plan that covers both your cruise route and port stops. This means uninterrupted access to maps, messaging, and emergency contacts.

eSIMs also save space. There’s no need to carry multiple SIM cards or a SIM ejector tool. Everything you need is already in your phone.

Comparing eSIMs and Traditional SIM Cards

eSIMs have clear advantages over physical SIM cards for cruise travel. They’re more flexible and easier to manage. You can refill your mobile plan instantly without visiting a store.

Traditional SIMs require manual swapping, which can be tricky on a moving ship. They’re also easy to lose or damage. eSIMs eliminate these risks.

eSIMs are better for the environment too. They reduce plastic waste from disposable SIM cards. Plus, they free up space in devices for other features.

One drawback is that not all phones support eSIMs yet. But this is changing fast as more manufacturers adopt the technology.

Selecting the Best eSIM Plan for Your Destination

Choosing the right eSIM plan for your cruise is key to staying connected at sea and in ports. The best option depends on your travel route, data needs, and budget.

Coverage and Providers for Popular Cruise Routes

Major cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian offer onboard Wi-Fi, but it can be slow and costly. eSIM providers give better options for many travelers. In the Caribbean, AT&T and T-Mobile have good coverage in most ports. An eSIM with AT&T coverage works well for cruises stopping in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

For European cruises, look for eSIMs with wide regional coverage. Many providers offer plans that work across multiple countries. This is handy when your ship stops in different nations each day.

Always check the specific ports on your cruise route. Make sure your chosen eSIM will work in each place you plan to visit.

Tailored eSIM Packages for Caribbean and European Cruises

Caribbean cruise eSIM plans often include data for U.S. territories like Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Some also cover popular stops like Jamaica and the Bahamas. A 15GB plan for North America can be a good fit for many Caribbean cruises.

European cruise eSIMs might offer data bundles for the Mediterranean or Baltic regions. These can cover countries like Italy, Greece, Spain, and Croatia in a single plan. Look for packages that match your cruise route.

Some eSIM providers create special cruise packages. These plans try to cover all the countries on common cruise paths. They can be a simple choice if the coverage matches your trip.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Data Plans

Data amount is a key factor. Light users might be fine with 5-10GB for a week-long cruise. Heavy users or those planning to stream videos may want unlimited data plans . Think about how much you’ll use your phone off the ship.

Plan duration matters too. Some eSIMs last for a set number of days, while others are valid until the data runs out. Pick a plan that covers your whole trip.

Price is important, but don’t just choose the cheapest option. Make sure the plan has good coverage for your route. A slightly more expensive eSIM with better service can save frustration later.

Lastly, check if the eSIM allows tethering. This lets you share your connection with other devices, which can be useful on a cruise.

Cost-Effective Strategies for Managing Data on a Cruise

Smart data management can save money and keep you connected during your cruise vacation. These tips help you avoid big bills and make the most of your data plans.

Avoiding Expensive Roaming Charges

Roaming fees can add up fast on a cruise. Turn off data roaming on your phone before you board. Use airplane mode when at sea to stop automatic downloads. Check with your cell provider about cruise-specific plans. Some offer daily passes for a flat fee.

Look into eSIM options for your trip. eSIMs let you switch to local providers at ports. This cuts costs compared to ship networks. GigSky offers plans that work on land and at sea. They can be cheaper than onboard Wi-Fi packages.

Optimizing Data Usage for Cost Savings

Be smart with your data use to stretch your budget. Download maps, shows, and music before your trip. Use offline modes in apps when possible. Text-based apps use less data than video calls.

Set data alerts on your phone to track usage. This stops surprise overages. Some tips to save data:

  • Use Wi-Fi when in port
  • Limit social media browsing
  • Turn off auto-play videos
  • Use lower quality streaming settings

Benefits of Prepaid Packages and Real User Reviews

Prepaid data packages offer budget control. You know the cost upfront with no surprise charges. Many cruisers find these plans more cost-effective than pay-as-you-go options.

Users report positive experiences with prepaid eSIMs. They like the easy activation process for USA, Canada, and Mexico SIM cards . Travelers praise the freedom to use data without worry.

Prepaid plans often have daily data caps. This helps manage usage naturally. Some users say this made them more mindful of data, leading to cost savings. Reviews show people enjoy reliable service without the stress of a growing bill.

Practical Tips for a Hassle-Free eSIM Experience at Sea

Smooth sailing with an eSIM requires some know-how. These tips will help you stay connected during your cruise without any hiccups.

Activation and Troubleshooting

Start by activating your eSIM before leaving port. Download your provider’s app and follow the setup steps. Test the connection while still in range of land-based networks. If issues arise, contact customer support right away.

Keep your device’s software up to date. This ensures compatibility with the latest eSIM features.

If you lose connection at sea, try toggling airplane mode on and off. This can help your device reconnect to available networks.

Save important activation details, like QR codes or activation numbers. You might need these if you need to reinstall your eSIM plan.

Switching Plans and Network Providers

Many eSIM providers offer flexible plans. You can often switch or top up your plan right from your phone. This is handy if you need more data or want to change providers mid-trip.

Research which networks have the best coverage for your cruise route. You may want to switch providers when entering new regions.

Some cruise lines partner with specific eSIM providers. Check if your ship offers any deals or special rates for mobile refills .

Ensuring Uninterrupted Internet Access During Your Cruise

Set up data usage alerts on your device. This helps avoid unexpected overages or running out of data at sea.

Download important apps, maps, and entertainment before your trip. This reduces data usage while cruising.

Use Wi-Fi when in port to conserve your eSIM data. Many ports and cafes offer free or low-cost internet access.

Consider a backup plan, like a second eSIM or physical SIM card. This gives you options if one provider has spotty coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing the right eSIM plan for cruise travel involves several key considerations. Let’s explore some common questions to help you make an informed decision.

What factors should be considered when selecting an eSIM plan for cruise ship connectivity?

Coverage area is crucial when picking an eSIM plan. Check if the provider offers service in your cruise destinations. Data allowance is another important factor. Think about how much internet you’ll use during your trip.

Pricing and plan duration also matter. Some plans offer daily rates, while others have longer validity periods. Compare options to find the best value for your cruise length.

Which eSIM providers offer the best coverage for international maritime travel?

Several eSIM providers specialize in maritime coverage. GigSky is known for offering both on-land and at-sea data plans. Holafly provides one-time payment options that can be cost-effective for medium-length cruises.

Other providers to consider include Airalo and Truphone. Research each company’s coverage maps to ensure they serve your cruise route.

How do I determine the data amount I need for my eSIM while on a cruise?

Think about your typical internet usage. Do you mainly check emails and send messages? Or do you stream videos and make video calls? Basic browsing and messaging use less data than streaming and video chats.

Consider your cruise activities too. If you plan to spend most of your time offline enjoying the ship, you’ll need less data than if you work remotely during your trip.

Can I use my eSIM in multiple countries if I’m going on a multi-destination cruise?

Yes, many eSIM plans work across multiple countries. Look for regional or global plans that cover all your cruise stops. These plans are great for Caribbean cruises or European river cruises with multiple port calls.

Mobile refill options can also be helpful for topping up data if needed during your multi-country journey.

Are there specific eSIM plans for cruise ship passengers?

Some eSIM providers offer plans tailored for cruise passengers. These plans often include both at-sea and in-port coverage. They may have special rates for maritime use, which can differ from regular land-based plans.

Look for cruise-specific eSIM options when researching providers. These plans are designed with seafaring travelers in mind.

How can I manage my eSIM data usage effectively during a cruise to avoid extra charges?

Turn off automatic app updates and background data refresh. This prevents apps from using data without your knowledge. Use Wi-Fi when available in ports or on the ship to conserve your eSIM data.

Download maps, entertainment, and other content before your trip. This reduces the need for data-heavy downloads while at sea. Monitor your usage through your eSIM provider’s app to avoid unexpected overages.

How to Use an eSIM on a Cruise

04/19/2024 by Kristin Addis 3 Comments

If you’ve ever set sail on a cruise, you know that staying connected while cruising the high seas can be expensive.

I remember staying mostly disconnected on my first cruise since not only was the onboard WiFi spotty, but I had to physically log on and off in order to use the data, and once I forgot to do so, thereby burning up all I had.

But there’s a new option now – one that allows you to get an eSIM ahead of time and stay connected from your phone. In this guide, we’ll dive (had to pun, sorry) into how to use an eSIM on a cruise ship:

Table of Contents

Using eSIMs on a Cruise Ship

holland america alaska cruise review

Traditionally, staying connected while cruising meant shelling out a pretty penny for onboard internet packages that often came with limitations and hefty price tags – I’m talking hundreds of dollars for our recent one-week Alaska cruise and Iceland cruise . But with GigSky eSIMs (this post’s sponsor), you can stay connected on your cruise without singing up for the onboard package.

GigSky offers a unique product with cruise eSIMs that’s relatively new and not offered by any other eSIM companies (at the time of this writing).

Not sure what an eSIM is? Read our full eSIM explanation.

Land, Sea, or Both: GigSky’s Tailored Packages

gigsky esim

Not all travelers have the same needs when it comes to connectivity at sea. That’s why they offer a range of tailored packages designed to suit your cruise desires :

Land Packages: Perfect for port days, GigSky’s land packages provide connectivity on solid ground. Navigate to the ‘destinations’ tab of Gigsky, and select the country or countries you’ll be visiting for a list of their international SIM cards . GigSky offers coverage all over the world.

Sea Packages: For days spent lounging by the pool or watching the view from on the deck, GigSky’s sea packages have you covered. Enjoy connectivity as you sail the open seas with packages available for Caribbean and European cruises.

Packages start at $38.99 for 1GB of data or $73.99 for 3GB, which, while steep on land, is much cheaper than most onboard cruise packages when purchased through the company.

To make sure your eSIM will work onboard, navigate to the shop compatibility section and click on the company you’ll be cruising with. The dropdown menu will have all of the ships that the eSIM is compatible with. For our upcoming cruise in Europe this summer with Holland America , we’ll be covered.

Land and Sea : Why choose between land and sea when you can have the best of both worlds? Buy eSIMs for each destination you’ll be visiting, plus the cruise package, and you’ll be connected the whole time rather than only when onboard like with a typical cruise internet package.

Why Choose GigSky eSIMs Over Onboard Internet Packages?

gigsky esim cruise

It’s no secret that onboard internet packages can be eye-wateringly expensive. But with GigSky eSIMs, you can enjoy all the benefits of connectivity at a fraction of the cost. Here’s why choosing GigSky eSIMs is a no-brainer for savvy cruisers:

Cost-Effectiveness: Compared to pricey onboard internet packages, GigSky eSIMs offer unbeatable value for money. With affordable rates and flexible packages, you can stay connected without blowing your budget.

No Restrictions: Unlike onboard internet packages that often come with data caps and speed throttling, GigSky eSIMs offer unrestricted connectivity. Stream, browse, and share to your heart’s content, without worrying about hitting a data limit or being slowed down to a crawl. You can simply buy more data as you go, although eventually if you plan on using a heavy amount of data, the onboard package could make more sense.

Flexibility: With GigSky eSIMs, you’re in control. Choose the package that best suits your needs – whether it’s land, sea, or both – and enjoy the freedom to stay connected on your terms.

How to Use an eSIM

Activating a GigSky eSIM is easy. Simply download the GigSky app, select your desired package, follow the prompts for activation.

I recommend making sure you’re up and running before you’re totally out of WiFi range just in case you need some help setting it up. Be sure to turn on roaming for the eSIM, and if it doesn’t work at first, power your device off and on to see if it activates. Usually these two things are what get my eSIMs going.

You’ll need an eSIM compatible device, which my iPhone14 (and any iteration after it) is, as well as many modern iPads and other devices.

If you need help, GigSky offers 24/7 support (phone numbers are listed at the bottom of this page ).

GigSky eSIMs make staying connected on your cruise easier and more affordable than ever before, especially if you just want to stay connected so your loved ones can reach you without breaking the bank.

Hi. Did you use Gigsky for an Alaskan cruise? Did it work on the ship?

Hilarion Martinez says

Did you actually use Gigsky when on the cruise? Did it easily connect? Were you able to check the speed of the connection? Was the speed good enough to watch Netflix, listen to podcasts?

When you are on the cruise, does that same cruise plan connect you when visiting a port?

I still can’t get anyone to provide a real review of their experience with Gigsky cruise plans

Can I use my phone on a cruise_

If you’re new to cruising (or maybe it’s just been a while since you’re sailed the friendly seas), you might be wondering how you’ll stay in touch with people while you’re on your trip.

Our customer support team regularly gets questions like “Can I use my phone on a cruise?” and “How much will it cost to have data on a cruise?” and “Does eSIM work on a cruise?” so we decided it was time to put together a simple guide to using your phone on a cruise.

But first, how NOT to use your phone on a cruise …

Before we get into your options for using your phone on a cruise, we want to make sure you pay attention to one very important point. If you don’t choose one of the options below, you might accidentally end up roaming on your regular phone plan.

This is really bad idea, friend.

Roaming on your regular phone plan is exactly what it sounds like. Your phone is trying to use your regular phone plan, but you’re actually outside your regular coverage zone, so your phone will be desperately trying to keep you connected … and racking up expensive roaming fees in the process. (This is especially costly on a cruise, since it’s harder for your phone to connect to a network back on land.)

So whatever you do, please choose one of the options below ahead of your cruise. Trust us, you don’t want to come home all tanned and relaxed, only to see a staggeringly expensive cell phone bill filled with extra charges.

How to use your phone on a cruise

Option 1: rely only on wi-fi 😒.

Your cruise ship should have Wi-Fi on board, and you’ll probably be able to connect to Wi-Fi networks in shops or restaurants once you’re on land. So if you’re fine with just checking in periodically and not having a cellular data connection, you can rely on Wi-Fi for the duration of your trip. Be sure to turn Data Roaming off or disable your Primary SIM temporarily, and remember that your phone number won’t work for calling or texting until you’re back to using a data connection.

OPTION 2: Buy a carrier travel plan 🤔

Your carrier at home probably offers a travel plan for the area where you’ll be cruising, and your cruise line will likely offer their own version, too. These carrier travel plans aren’t cheap, since it’s trickier to get data out at sea. But you can talk to your carrier ahead of your vacation and see what they’ll charge for you to use your phone on a cruise, and make a decision from there. Be sure to tell them every country you’ll be visiting during the cruise (and how long you’ll be traveling), so they set you up with the appropriate plan.

OPTION 3: Use a prepaid eSIM data package 😊

No matter where you’re traveling, eSIM travel data packages are a great way to stay affordably connected in 120+ countries. Instead of relying on your regular SIM card (your carrier plan from back home), you install a digital SIM card called an ‘eSIM.’ This eSIM connects your device to local networks in the country or region you’re visiting, so you’re able to have a reliable data connection without paying roaming charges.

Your eSIM data connection won’t affect your regular phone number , so you can talk on the phone or send/receive texts while you’re on your cruise. The best part? No surprises or hidden fees. What you see is what you pay, and if you run out of eSIM data, it’s your decision whether you want to buy more.

Using an eSIM for data on a cruise

If you chose Option #3 and you’re interested in hearing more about using prepaid eSIM data on your next cruise, that’s great! Let’s walk through a few things you should know before use eSIM on a cruise …

1. Know that the connection will depend on your location.

We do our best to keep our customers connected anywhere they travel, however, we rely on data networks to maintain those connections. While eSIM data can work on cruise ships, the quality of your connection will depend on how close you are to land. That’s because eSIM data comes from cell phone towers, just like any other cellular connection, and those towers aren’t located in the middle of the ocean.

Internet connections are notoriously slow aboard a cruise ship , no matter which route you take to get data on your phone. But cruising isn’t *all* about the ship, of course. Remember that you’ll want data while you’re on land, either before/after your cruise or during various stops along the way.

2. Choose a data package for each location you want data.

eSIM data packages are sold by country, or by region. So depending on where you’re cruising, you might just need to buy a single regional package and you’ll have data in every location you visit.

If you’re going on a Caribbean cruise:  Our Caribbean eSIM data package includes data in Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, and Turks and Caicos. And a week’s worth of data in all 11 countries is just $20.

If you’re going on an Alaskan cruise: Our United States eSIM includes data in all 50 states (including Alaska, of course). So if you’re departing from Seattle and spending all of your trip within the United States, this might be the only package you need. If you’re departing from Vancouver (or elsewhere in Canada), it’s a better idea to shop for a North American eSIM that will work across the United States  and  Canada. It’s $9 for a week’s worth of data.

If you’re going on a Mediterranean cruise: Heading on a cruise that passes through France, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Greece or Turkey? Our Mediterranean eSIM provides data in all six countries, starting at just $6.75 for a week’s worth of data.

3. Adjust your settings to conserve data.

If you want to be data-conscious and use as little data as possible while you’re traveling, use our 10 tips to conserve data while traveling and you’ll be able to get away with purchasing a smaller data package.

Please reach out to our Customer Support team if you have any questions about using your phone on a cruise, and Bon Voyage!

E sim - anyone tried them?

I'm going on the Eastern Explorer 2 cruise on Discovery 2 next March. Been thinking about an internet package on ship to keep in touch with home and have seen in the cruise extras section of my booking an option to get an E SIM. Looking at the website from the link it looks like you need a separate E SIM for each country and no mention of being able to use it while at sea.

Has anyone gone down this route? Am I best getting an internet package onboard? Or has that option been withdrawn and Tui are pushing you to use an ESIM  instead?

e-sim would only be for mobile data on land at the various places you stop (or near enough to land for a signal).it won’t work at sea as you can only connect to maritime networks which are very expensive. If won’t connect to ships internet - it’s mobile data only.

I think you would be best to get a mobile package from your current supplier that includes all the countries you are visiting - e.g Vodafone allow you to use your uk data package allowance overseas depending on contract but you can get an extra one off package for n-days for countries not covered by your existing contract.

this is simpler and probably cheaper than an e-sim for just checking in back home.

ships internet packages that I have used are very poor and expensive.

I just wait until the next port of call and then use mobile data like you would in the uk.

In emergencies at sea if you need WiFi just get a pass for that day or part of that day.

thanks. this is very helpful. I'm with O2, I'll see what they can do.

I bought a Tesco PAYG sim, 5000 texts, 5000 calls and 10 gb of data. £10 and it will last 30 days. Ok so I will be using the phone number it came with but I’ve let everyone know that number. Sky charge £2 for every 24 hours roaming so I had a potential bill of £30 using them. Simply change the sim back when we get home.

I have an O2 eSIM which is perfect for European travel as it allows roaming, however I've just switched my physical SIM from Vodafone to Lebara which also allows roaming.

Look at ID mobile, it uses the 3 network and £10 per month on a 30 day rolling contract gets you unlimited calls and texts and 10 gig internet which rolls over each month also keep your old number.

plus Europe roaming.

I have just activated an airalo esim with not much problem (they respond to queries immediately). I have done this because Jordan, Israel (although no longer going there!) and Egypt are not included with my O2 package even when extending it for non Eu areas. Reasonable cost for data only - so ok for what’sapp, email, newspaper downloads etc - in theory - will advise later how it works in practice.

Thanks

While you can't use it at sea, e-sims could be useful for those visiting multiple ports in multiple countries. e.g. For a Far East Cruise, Airalo does regional e-sim 14 countries 5Gb for $20 for 30 days.

I can now report our Airalo esim was brilliant. Easy to use as soon as we got close enough to land. Used In Turkey and in Egypt from while approaching Port Said, during the canal transit and later when in port. Also similarly in Oman.

Also advised several crew members of the benefits! Much, much cheaper than ships WiFi but obviously no good when ship offshore and, note, data only. So good for WhatsApp etc and downloads of papers, emails, etc.

We always buy a ships internet package. It has always been OK for us, We can use whatsapp to message and call whilst at sea as it uses data for all communications. Just have to remember to log out at the end of each session.

We have also got world roamer on our mobile packages (O2 & vodafone), with helps whilst in port.

  • 4 weeks later...

We used  Airalo esim and had great coverage everywhere, you just need to check your phone is compatible. Lots of videos on youtube telling you how to install.

What Is an eSIM and Why Is It Important for a Seafarer?

mediterranean cruise esim

As a seafarer, you need a no-fuss way to switch networks when you land in a new port. You shouldn't have to worry about limited service, juggling multiple SIM cards, or expensive roaming fees. Enter the eSIM, an easy and affordable way to get online and stay connected at sea. Read on to discover how eSIM technology is improving connectivity for seafarers around the world.

What Is an eSIM?

First, what is an eSIM and how does it work ? An eSIM is an embedded SIM card. It serves the same function as a physical SIM card, but it's built into your device and works 100% digitally. With an eSIM from Airalo , you can stay connected in 200+ countries and regions worldwide — just by downloading an eSIM data plan.

mediterranean cruise esim

Airalo’s Commitment to Seafarers

We want to make global connectivity accessible to all travelers, and seafarers are no exception. Anything can happen at sea, and we want you to maximize your ability to use your mobile device as intended. Here are a few examples of what you can do with an Airalo eSIM at sea:

  • Keep connected without having to swap a physical SIM card.
  • Never pay expensive roaming fees on your eSIM line.
  • Easily switch destinations, and choose from plans for 200+ countries and regions worldwide.
  • Get top-of-the-line connectivity from the fastest, most reliable carriers.
  • Pay local rates for your data connection (no hidden fees here!).
  • Transfer important documents without a Wi-Fi connection.
  • Get 24/7 support from the Airalo team.

Benefits of Using an eSIM at Sea

Switching from a physical SIM to an eSIM has never been easier. Let's explore a few examples of how eSIM technology can help you conduct business and stay connected at sea.

Travel Light (and With Less Plastic)

Nowadays, it's much easier to travel light and save as much space as possible. On a ship, you need to plan accordingly, especially since you'll be in the same cabin for days to weeks on end.

Imagine you arrive at a port in a new country and need to get online. Usually, you'd have to locate a SIM card vendor, wait in line to purchase a local SIM, and swap SIM cards to get a connection. Not to mention, every SIM card in your bag takes up unnecessary space that could be used for anything other than basic mobile connectivity.

With an eSIM, you only need your smartphone to stay connected. You can install an eSIM plan for your destination and connect to a mobile network within minutes. No more waiting in line, adding another SIM card to your collection, or contributing to landfill waste with unnecessary plastics.

mediterranean cruise esim

Stay Connected at Sea

Life as a seafarer, sailer, or traveler at sea can be isolating. You're constantly in search of networks so you can get online. And when you do find one, it usually has a limited or unreliable connection. eSIMs give you the freedom and flexibility to stay connected as you travel.

With an eSIM, you can access any photos, videos, or apps on your device. You can use your eSIM data to listen to a podcast, watch a movie, and play your favorite mobile game — all without worrying about losing your connection.

mediterranean cruise esim

Keep Up With News and Current Events

One of the trickiest parts of being a mariner is keeping up with news and current events at sea. As a sailor or sea traveler, you must be aware of global events at your destination, back home, and anything else that may concern your safety. You shouldn't be left in the dark — an eSIM ensures you won't be.

An Airalo eSIM gives you access to reliable data so you can browse the internet, sign and send documents, and stay informed at sea. You can stay updated with regional and international events, be notified about personal events at home, and keep in contact with emergency services and work colleagues.

mediterranean cruise esim

Navigate Local Language Barriers

Whether you land in a British, Spanish, or Russian port, language barriers can make it tricky to get a connection. Even if you know the basics, it can be difficult to communicate the coverage you need, from how much data to how long you need it.

With an eSIM, there's no need to stumble through a translation to purchase a SIM card. Instead, you can download an eSIM directly to your device. As long as you have a stable connection, you can download and install an eSIM plan on the go.

Pro tip:  We recommend installing your eSIM plan before boarding your ship.

mediterranean cruise esim

Keep in Touch With the People Who Matter Most

As a seafarer, you need to keep in touch with friends and family, no matter where you sail. Airalo's eSIM technology makes it easy to call, text, and communicate with your friends and family:

  • Keep your phone number for when you have a Wi-Fi connection.
  • Use your eSIM to call and text using apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and iMessage.
  • Send and receive emails.
  • Post to social media.

Never Get Locked Into a Plan

One thing to look out for is carrier plans that charge you for international service and lock you into an expensive contract. Once you're locked in, it's tricky to get out, meaning you're stuck with whatever coverage and payment structure you signed on for.

With an eSIM, it's easy to switch up your coverage. You can choose from local (single-country), regional, and global data plans. And you get to pick how much data you purchase (e.g., 3GB, 5GB, 10GB) and for how long (e.g., 7 days, 15 days, 30 days). If you run low on time or data, you can easily top up in the Airalo app.

Off for a longer period of time? Airalo has international and regional plans that extend upwards of 60 to 180 days, depending on your travel needs.

Ready to get started with an Airalo eSIM?  Visit the Airalo store  or download the Airalo app ( iOS  |  Android ) to browse eSIMs for 200+ countries and regions worldwide.

Ready to try eSIMs and change the way you stay connected?

Download the Airalo app to purchase, manage, and top up your eSIMs anytime, anywhere!
