Tabletop Review: ‘Minecraft Magnetic Travel Puzzle’ Is Perfect for Trips and Outings

Travel season is now in full swing as the weather warms up, and schools are beginning to releasing kids for Spring Break. Outdoor sport seasons are also starting to kick up again, which means a lot of families are clocking in extra traveling hours, or hours at sport practices and games. I’ve previously written about our favorite things to bring along to entertain kids (and especially non-participating siblings) in these cases, so when ThinkFun sent me a complimentary copy of their new Minecraft Magnetic Travel Puzzle , I was eager to see if it might be a fun addition to our entertainment bag.

What is Minecraft Magnetic Travel Puzzle ?

Minecraft Magnetic Travel Puzzle is a logic based game of deduction for a single player age 8+ and is made up of 40 challenges that increase in difficulty, each taking minutes to play. It has an MSRP of $14.99.

Minecraft Magnetic Travel Puzzle Components

Minecraft Magnetic Travel Puzzle contains the following:

• 1 Instruction Book
• 9 Magnetic Minecraft Pieces
• 1 Challenge Booklet with Magnetic Board, Challenges, and Solutions

The component list is very simple, which is exactly what you need for a game that’s supposed to be travel friendly. The Instruction Book gives a good overview of the logical and deductive reasoning reasoning needed for the game which can be helpful for kids who aren’t as familiar with logic based puzzle games. The Magnetic Pieces are all big enough to be easy to keep track of, but small enough to be travel friendly. They are all designs that Minecraft players should be familiar with (Sword, Pickaxe, and Armor) in 3 different colors each. The Challenge Booklet is a particularly clever design. It’s bound so that you can open it up and have the Challenges appear on your left and the Magnetic playing board (it looks like a Crafting Table) on the other. There’s just enough space on the sides of the board to keep the magnets at the ready until you place them. Beneath all of the Challenges is a grid with all of the solutions. The whole thing small enough to put in a kid’s lap or on a restaurant table, and you can easily fold up the Instruction Book under the Challenges and keep the Magnetic Pieces on the Board  to keep everything perfectly contained between play sessions.

How to Play Minecraft Magnetic Travel Puzzle

The goal of Minecraft Magnetic Travel Puzzle is to solve each Challenge Puzzle by using logic and deductive reasoning along with positive or negative clues provided by the Challenge.

Because of the travel based nature of the game, there is minimal set up involved. The first time you play, the Magnetic Pieces do need to be punched out of a sheet, but even a kid can handle that part. Otherwise all you need to do is push the Magnetic Pieces to the side of the Magnetic Board and choose a Challenge to play. That’s it.

The Challenges

The Gameplay mechanic is quick to catch onto, but the logical reasoning you need to solve the Challenges is where the real brain power comes in. Once you’ve selected your Challenge, you simply follow the clues provided to determine where to place each Magnetic Piece on the 3×3 Magnetic Board.

The first 20 puzzles (Beginner and Intermediate level) use positive clues, or clues that tell you where pieces go. The clues might involve color or object type as well as something about the location the piece will end up in as well. Challenges 20-40 (Advanced and Expert) start working in negative clues which  are clues that tell the player what patterns should not appear in the final solution. You can see some Challenge examples below.

There’s no true end to the game, although you can declare yourself a winner if you solve all 40 Challenges.

Why You Should Play Minecraft Magnetic Travel Puzzle

I’m a big fan of logic games and puzzles for kids (although you can play them too, grown-ups!) and I’ve been a fan of ThinkFun’s puzzles since we first purchased a copy of on of their best known games, Rush Hour .  The educational value is clear, they’re casual enough to pick up for a small amount of time or a longer session, and setting up and cleaning up goes fast. They’re usually a calmer, quieter activity, which sometimes we need. I love the simplicity of this travel version that keeps all of the brain power of the other ThinkFun logic games, but with the ease of something that can be taken on the go. I really hope this is not the last travel puzzle ThinkFun rolls out with.

The pieces and components are perfect for a travel game, and like I said, I’m a big fan of how compact the Challenge Booklet is.

Gameplay is fast to catch onto, but the Challenges are where the brain power comes in. I handed off the game to A, our 9-year-old, to play during the ride on a recent day trip. A takes to logic and spatial reasoning puzzles pretty well (he made Gifted for that skill set), and he was eventually able to solve all of the puzzles, but admitted that the negative space ones were a lot trickier to do. He would happily keep the game in our car’s entertainment bag to bring out and replay again. The age recommendation of 8+ is just about right, but a slightly younger kid with decent logic and spatial reasoning might be able to take to it too.

One of the nicest features is that even if your kid doesn’t play Minecraft , they won’t be at any disadvantage to playing this game. If your kid is Minecraft obsessed, they’ll probably really get a kick out of the tie-in art that goes along with this. With a MSRP of $14.99, it’s reasonably priced to grab for your own entertainment or even to gift to a Minecraft fan you know. 6 Cool Magnetic Travel Games For Kids

I’ve been talking about travel board games for a long while. Heck we even have an intensive list of travel board games for preschoolers . No matter what your age is, you will find that board games are a great way to make friends, engage with family and have fun. Magnetic travel games are a subpart of this and they work amazingly well because you don’t lose your pieces that easily. 

I guess I really discovered the different types of magnetic travel games only after I discovered my first in the children’s library in the Forum in Groningen. That particular one was from HABA . If you aren’t familiar with the brand, do check it out, they have some amazing games for kids of all ages. These are designed to stimulate their thinking process and help with both fine and gross motor activities.

Magnetic travel games for young kids (ages 4 and below).

Magnetic travel games can be used for really young kids. They are easy for children to navigate, usually have bright colors that stimulate them visually and help them with both fine and gross motor skills. There are however a couple of things that I would recommend watching out for.

• Make sure that the games do not have small detachable (or removable in any form) magnets. These can pose a big choking hazard.
• Make sure that the pieces themselves are not small.
• Ensure that there is adult supervision for any game that you are on the fence for.
• Check the age appropriateness of the game. Now this part is a bit hazy. This is because many games that are aimed at higher age groups worked with my children between the ages of 2-4 years. I did ensure that there was parental supervision at all times because children will be children.

Magnetic Blocks Or Tiles

One of the best magnetic travel games for young kids are magnetic tiles of blocks. Now there are many different types of these that are available. Here are a couple of popular ones.

There are many versions of these magnetic tiles but one of the best brands in the market is the Magna tiles . This is because they are more durable and they are easier for young children to use.

For those of you who are not familiar with this magnetic travel game, the magnetic tiles come in a variety of shapes. Generally the base version of the game has triangles and squares. These click together thanks to the magnets on the edges. 

Young children love the colors and the fact that these tiles click together.

The game grows with the child because as they grow older they challenge their creative side. The Magna tiles can be used to build houses, structures and even geometric shapes. 

The best part is that these tiles may seem numerous but once you stack them on top of each other, they barely take up a lot of space. Plus they are versatile so children are less likely to get bored of them.

So if you have noticed, I’ve specifically shown you the larger set of the base unit because odds are, like us you will buy the smaller one and then land up buying the larger one. That’s why I recommend buying the big box base unit from the get go.

Magnetic Puzzles

One of the things that I love about puzzles of all kinds is that they stimulate people to think. The same is true when it comes to children. Now I find that magnetic travel games in the form of puzzles are perfect. Not only are they tiny, they also have a great deal of replayability. By this, I mean that once the puzzle has been solved, it resets and the answer isn’t always the same. Here are some of my favorites.

2. HABA Town Maze

The HABA town maze is exactly what it sounds like. A maze that children have to work through. Now this maze is engraved in wood and little metal balls can be led through it with the help of a magnetic pen. The game helps children as young as 2 understand how a maze works and trust me, it is so much easier to explain than trying to get them to solve a maze on a piece of paper. I think this is largely because of the 3D aspect of the puzzle.

The basic idea of this game is that the little balls are actually cars and they have to navigate a road. There are all sorts of obstructions (that you can set) that the child needs to work around. Kids find it fascinating.

One of the skills that gets worked on here is hand to eye coordination and it is very important for kids at this age.

The HABA Number Magnetic Maze is very similar to the HABA town maze. This magnetic travel game also uses colored balls and there is also a maze but it is geared towards teaching the children to count. Aside from being educational, it also one of the fun magnetic travel games in the market.

The child has to guide the right colored ball to a slot depending on the number written at the side of it. Worried that your child can’t read their numbers yet?

This game helps the child count the number of balls and link them to the number written at the side. It’s a manual action and a fun one at that. That is why it is one the popular magnetic travel games.

There are a lot of magnetic travel games that are aimed at story telling. They have different scenes and magnetic pictures that the children can use to develop a story or just to play around. I find that these games do well with young children too.

Our first introduction to it was through a public library in Groningen where they had a HABA Peter and Pauline Farm . The kids loved it from the first moment they started interacting with it. Needless to say, it got added to our collection of magnetic travel games rather quickly.

So we never really bought the HABA Peter And Pauline farm but a different version not because we didn’t like the game but because it was available in the library and we could choose to buy another one of HABA magnetic travel games instead. That being said, I’ve seen the kids interact with it on multiple occasions and they love it.

As can be imagined, this game is all about farming and the produce. The magnets are themed and the children can choose to grow their vegetables, pluck them and take them home. There are various scenes that they can use to reflect these activities.

One great part about this particular game is that it comes in a metal tin which acts as the base. The scene is inserted in the tin and the magnets are stuck over the scene. This way, the magnets remain in the box at all times and do not fall out.

Okay so this is the game that we bought instead of the HABA Peter and Pauline farm. The game in all its essence is pretty cool. It has 4 different scenes as backgrounds. It also has a magnetic girl who the kids can dress up in a variety of outfits. There are also a variety of different accessories that can used in story telling.

Think of it as a magnetic doll house if you will. The best part about this particular item is that it is extremely portable. Which makes it a perfect magnetic travel game and an epic doll house at that. You can see why the kids love it. It totally makes one of the best magnetic travel games.

Also since you can put a scene in both parts of the metal tin, the child can use it together. This enhances the play.

It is a very interactive game and one that the parents can also join in. The best part is that there is no right or wrong. All that the child has to do is use his or her imagination.

As you can see, this is one of the coolest magnetic travel toys in the market.

The Magnetic Cube puzzles are one of the many open-world puzzles that will reward you with treasure chests containing valuable items and currency in exchange for a bit of logic and spatial awareness. In the case of the Magnetic Cube puzzle, you will probably face your very first one to the northwest of Jinzhou city , right next to the Hunaglong-Central Plains Resonance Beacon .

The puzzle is relatively simple, although it will certainly get more complex while exploring every inch of the world. This puzzle is effectively the classic “ push the big block across the room until you press the switch on the floor ” we have all dreaded from the Zelda franchise.

Instead of being ice cubes, these cubes stand above magnetic platforms that will stop their momentum , and you will need to hit one of their flat faces to determine their direction.

The goal is to get the cube to stand on top of the final blue-shining platform so that the treasure chest unlocks. If the cube falls off the board, then it will start all over . So, when you select a direction, be aware of where the cube will end up .

Not only that but there are special platforms in more intricate versions of the puzzle that will teleport your cube , allowing it to position itself on otherwise inaccessible spots on the board that will otherwise be impossible to get to by mere hitting.

And that’s pretty much everything you need to know about the Magnetic Cube puzzle! Contrary to challenges such as the Hover Target , you will have as much time as you need to complete this , so don’t rush in and hit the cube without having analyzed the board previously. You can certainly force this puzzle to have a “trial and error” type of approach, but they shouldn’t take you long to dominate.

Rubik’s has combination puzzles in different sizes and shapes, including pyramids, 5x5 cubes, and even twisting puzzles that you rearrange into geometric shapes. Beyond the classic cubes, Rubik’s now has several games that play on the color combining that put the brand on the map. Rubik’s now offers a full range of puzzles, cubes, and brain teasers, which may scratch the same sort of itch as the original. That said, if you’re a speed cuber or looking to get into competitive cubing, we don’t recommend a classic Rubik’s Cube.

While the company may have invented the puzzle, even the smoothest Rubik’s cubes don’t have the motion and movement capabilities to handle top-level performance in competitive speed cubing, where players compete to solve puzzles like the Rubik’s Cube. Despite being the original cube, Rubik’s isn’t competitive cubers’ preferred brand—other options, like the Gan 11 M Pro from CuberSpeed , have smoother motions and perks like internal magnets to speed up solve times.

Number of Players

The traditional Rubik’s Cube is made for solo use. Many of the newer Rubik’s games accommodate two to four players at a time. Level of Difficulty

My goal was to include Rubik’s products that hold true to the original spirit of that first cube while incorporating new social and competitive elements (for replay value and a bit of extra fun). I started with several categories to fill: the best games to play with friends or family, the best that flip the original cube form factor on its head, and the toughest puzzles, to name a few. With those in mind, I began my search for the best Rubik’s puzzles by scouring the full list of games the brand makes prioritizing a good mix of play styles and creative takes on the classic. There are, of course, some classic choices that most people know and love already, too.

While the phrase “Rubik’s Cube” has become colloquially synonymous with any 3x3 or 5x5 combination puzzle, I stuck to official Rubik’s games. We went through all of the company’s offerings and selected items that offered the most variety of play and the most creative takes on the classic game. Here you’ll find Rubik’s products that show off the original spirit of the first cube while incorporating new social and competitive elements that add replay value and a bit of extra fun.

1) The Original 3x3 Cube

For anyone with an itch for a puzzle, you can’t go wrong with the classic Rubik’s Cube. While it looks nearly identical to the one from the ’70s and ’ 80s , the cube comes with some noticeable improvements.

With a more streamlined internal design, this modern cube has a smoother feel to it, so each move flows more easily into the next—Deputy Editor Zoë Hannah has tried this newer model out and can attest that this one does a much better job of preventing sticky rotations. The days of peeling the stickers off and cheating for a victory are long gone, since Rubik’s replaced the stickers with a plastic coating. But the fun of the puzzle cube remains untouched.

The Classic Rubik's Cube You Love, But Modernized

2) Gridlock Game

A game of problem solving and strategy, the Gridlock Game from Rubik’s takes the pattern recognition, spatial awareness, and critical thinking skills needed for the original cube and translates them into a completely new concept.

In this game, players must fit all the tiles of different sizes and shapes onto a grid board around specific puzzle pieces. Draw a card to determine where to place the starting puzzle pieces, then work to fit all your tiles around them while perfectly filling the grid.

The game works as a solo strategy challenge or as a head-to-head competition.

Don’t let your puzzle solving stop at a cube. Think outside the box with the Rubik’s Pyramid. The pyramid shape takes many of the classic elements of a traditional 3x3 cube and turns them on their head.

Instead of maintaining the same shape through every turn like a regular cube, when you turn the pieces, the pyramid changes into a myriad of other shapes as you solve it, ultimately getting back to the pyramid shape when it’s fully solved. This one also turns more smoothly than the cube. With larger pieces meant to twist in more directions, the internal mechanics are designed for easier motion. This could be a good fit for less experienced puzzlers, as it’s a bit easier than the classic 3x3.

This game from Rubik’s accommodates up to four players at a time. A multi-dimensional version of tic-tac-toe, this game has players compete against each other to create the most three-in-a-row color combinations within the skeleton of a Rubik’s Cube.

Players drop blocks of different colors into the cage and start creating their rows of three and blocking their opponents. Alongside dropping in blocks, players can twist and flip the layers of the cage just as they would a regular Rubik’s Cube. Blocks rearrange and create new combinations to play off of.

5) Professor 5x5 Cube

Take the challenge of the original cube and kick it up a notch. This puzzle cube extends each face to 25 squares rather than the traditional 9, for a 5x5 construction that’ll probably take you quite a bit longer. The more cubes on each side, the harder it is to solve.

This cube is the perfect upgrade for anyone who has already solved the 3x3 several times and is looking to challenge themselves. We do not recommend this cube for beginners.

Outside of solving the cube, much like the original, it also serves as a great fidget device. Keep your mind and hands occupied while you watch TV, relax at home, or listen to a podcast.

6) Perplexus Fusion 3x3 Gravity 3D Maze Game

Combine 3D maze puzzles with the twisting and turning of a Rubik’s cube in the Perplexus Fusion. Work to move your ball through the elaborate maze inside the cube, using gravity, momentum, and coordination to guide the ball to the end.

The maze requires more than just that. You must also manipulate the maze shape by turning the exterior of the Rubik’s cube to match up the internal maze track with new sections.

If the maze is too complex to figure out on your own, Rubik’s provides a series of tips and tricks get your ball back on the right track.

Forget the slow, deliberate strategy of the other options on our list. This head-to-head game from Rubik’s is all about speed. Compete directly with your friends, sliding and rearranging tiles around to match a designated pattern.

To play, simply shake the small scrambler up, look at the pattern it creates, and start your race. The quick-paced game has an even quicker clean-up time: The entire dual-faced board folds into itself like a small briefcase for easy storage, which is great for carrying it to a friend’s place for game night.

8) 3x3 Magnetic Speed Cube

Break personal records with this version of the original Rubik’s Cube built for speed. The cube has magnetic connections for a smoother, cleaner turn. This prevents joints from getting stuck and helps pieces move with less strain on your hands and wrist.

Rubik’s says the internal construction is made from stronger materials to prevents the core from popping or cubes from breaking off when you’re moving with speed, and the internal components are lubricated to keep things smooth. Read: No more snags and a lot more momentum.

The cube is also a great alternative to the original for those with wrist pain or arthritis, as each turn takes far less effort. While it’s much faster than a regular Rubik’s Cube, we still don’t recommend it for top level competition.

Khabarovsk Krai occupies a long swathe of Russia's Pacific coastline, a full 2000 kilometers of it, going as far south as Sakhalin and north to Magadan Oblast . At nearly 800.000 km², it's Russias fourth largest province. In the north, taiga and tundra prevail, deciduous forests in the south, and swampy forests in the central areas around Nikolaevsk-on-Amur . As a testament to its size there are more than 50 thousand lakes to fish in, more rivers and streams than you would care to count, and several mountain ranges intersect the region, including the northern reaches of the Sikhote-Alin mountains shared with Primorsky krai. The highest point is Mount Bery, towering nearly in fact, three quarters of the area is occupied by mountains and plateaus.

Biodiversity [ edit ]

The diversity of purely North animals like brown bear and sheer South representatives like Eastern softshell spiny turtle (Trionix) is backed by the legend that God would mix the rest of seeds and animals when somebody told him about missing spot on Earth.

One can encounter pine-tree and wild Far-Eastern grape which came definitely from the South. Its blue round berries with sour taste are cultivated in gardens to produce home wine.

Aboriginal culture within small enclaves across the krai are Nanai, Ulchi, Manchur, Orochi, Udege, Negidal, Nivkhi, Evenki and varies in each settlement.

Khabarovsk is a major transportation hub for the entire Russian Far East and will likely be any visitor's first stop by either the Trans-Siberian Railway or via Khabarovsk's international airport ( KHV  IATA ).

From China there are two entrance routes: one begins on the border with the Heihe - Blagoveshchensk crossing point, the other from Fuyuan town on Amur river. Another possible way is one from Sakhalin, where international ferry operates between Russian Korsakov and Japan's Wakkanai . A one-night bus trip along the federal highway Vladivostok-Khabarovsk is an option for a traveller, if the train carriage by some odd reason is not preferable.

Fishing and hunting in the wild are the major attractions for local villagers, town and city dwellers as well as trekking routes to taiga plains and mountains untouched by humans are favourite activities for all sorts of tourists. Khabarovsk and Komsomolsk mountain bike clubs are all at it. Taiga forest roads are always abuzz with mosquitos in summer and the best seasons for visiting are May and September when the air is not so stifling and the sun is just warm. Winter attracts regional skiers and snowboarders to the ski bases "Holdomi" and "Amut Snow Lake" near Komsomolsk and "Spartak" slopes near Khabarovsk.

Local food follows traditional Russian cuisine featured with salted bracken, mushrooms, Korean and Chinese and even European dishes served in theme restaurants of two big cities. Don't forget to taste pancakes with a spoonful of linden, wildflower, buckweat honey or a season caviar stuffing.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Snakes and bears are rare attackers in the wild, lest provoked. More dangerous are infectious ticks which are active most of all in spring. Use spray against ticks.

Khabarovsk is the hub for regional air travel with important flights to Russian destinations Anadyr , Irkutsk , Krasnoyarsk , Magadan , Moscow , Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky , Yakutsk , and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk , as well as international flights to Niigata , Japan and to Seoul , Korea . There are no direct flights to/from the US .

Being dominated by the Siberian High winter cold, the continental climates of the krai see extreme freezing for an area adjacent to the sea near the mid-latitudes, but also warm summers in the interior. The southern region lies mostly in the basin of the lower Amur River , with the mouth of the river located at Nikolaevsk-on-Amur draining into the Strait of Tartary , which separates Khabarovsk Krai from the island of Sakhalin . The north occupies a vast mountainous area along the coastline of the Sea of Okhotsk , a marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean . Khabarovsk Krai is bordered by Magadan Oblast to the north; Amur Oblast , Jewish Autonomous Oblast , and the Sakha Republic to the west; Primorsky Krai to the south; and Sakhalin Oblast to the east.

The population consists of mostly ethnic Russians , but indigenous people of the area are numerous, such as the Tungusic peoples ( Evenks , Negidals , Ulchs , Nanai , Oroch , Udege ), Amur Nivkhs , and Ainu . [10]

Khabarovsk Krai shares its borders with Magadan Oblast in the north; with the Sakha Republic and Amur Oblast in the west; with the Jewish Autonomous Oblast , China ( Heilongjiang ), and Primorsky Krai in the south; and is limited by the Sea of Okhotsk in the east. In terms of area, it is the fourth-largest federal subject within Russia. Major islands include the Shantar Islands .

Taiga and tundra in the north, swampy forest in the central depression, and deciduous forest in the south are the natural vegetation in the area. The main rivers are the Amur , Amgun , Uda , and Tugur , among others. There are also lakes such as Bokon , Bolon , Chukchagir , Evoron , Kizi , Khummi , Orel , and Udyl , among others. [11]

Khabarovsk Krai has a severely continental climate with its northern areas being subarctic with stronger maritime summer moderation in the north. In its southerly areas, especially inland, annual swings are extremely strong, with Khabarovsk itself having hot, wet, and humid summers which rapidly transform into severely cold and long winters, where temperatures hardly ever go above freezing. This is because of the influence of the East Asian monsoon in summer and the bitterly cold Siberian High in winter. The second-largest city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur has even more violent temperature swings than Khabarovsk, with winter average lows below −30   °C (−22   °F) , but in spite of this, avoiding being subarctic because of the significant heat in summer.

The main mountain ranges in the region are the Bureya Range , the Badzhal Range (highest point 2,221 metres (7,287   ft) high, the Gora Ulun ), the Yam-Alin , the Dusse-Alin , the Sikhote-Alin , the Dzhugdzhur Mountains , the Kondyor Massif , as well as a small section of the Suntar-Khayata Range , the Yudoma-Maya Highlands , and the Sette-Daban in the western border regions. The highest point is 2,933 metres (9,623   ft) high, Berill Mountain . [12] [13]

There are a number of peninsulas along the krai's extensive coast, the main ones being (north to south) the Lisyansky Peninsula , Nurki Peninsula , Tugurskiy Peninsula , and the Tokhareu Peninsula .

The main islands of Khabarovsk Krai (north to south) are Malminskiye Island , the Shantar Islands , Menshikov Island , Reyneke Island (Sea of Okhotsk) , Chkalov Island , Baydukov Island , and the Chastye Islands . The island of Sakhalin (Russia's largest) is administered separately as Sakhalin Oblast , along with the Kuril Islands .

The charts below detail climate averages from various locations in the krai. Khabarovsk is set near the Chinese border at a lower latitude far inland, while Komsomolsk-on-Amur being further downstream on the Amur river at a higher latitude. Sovetskaya Gavan and Okhotsk are coastal settlements in the deep south and far north, respectively.

According to various Chinese and Korean records, the southern part of Khabarovsk Krai was originally occupied by one of the five semi-nomadic Shiwei , the Bo Shiwei tribes, and the Black Water Mohe tribes living, respectively, on the west and the east of the Bureya and the Lesser Khingan ranges.

In 1643, Vassili Poyarkov 's boats descended the Amur , returning to Yakutsk by the Sea of Okhotsk and the Aldan River , and in 1649–1650, Yerofey Khabarov occupied the banks of the Amur. The resistance of the Chinese, however, obliged the Cossacks to quit their forts, and by the Treaty of Nerchinsk (1689), Russia abandoned its advance into the basin of the river.

Although the Russians were thus deprived of the right to navigate the Amur River, the territorial claim over the lower courses of the river was not settled in the Treaty of Nerchinsk of 1689. The area between the Uda River and the Greater Khingan mountain range (i.e. most of Lower Amuria) was left undemarcated and the Sino-Russian border was allowed to fluctuate. [20] [21]

Later in the nineteenth century, Nikolay Muravyov conducted an aggressive policy with China by claiming that the lower reaches of the Amur River belonged to Russia . In 1852, a Russian military expedition under Muravyov explored the Amur, and by 1857, a chain of Russian Cossacks and peasants had been settled along the whole course of the river. In 1858, in the Treaty of Aigun , China recognized the Amur River downstream as far as the Ussuri River as the boundary between Russia and the Qing Empire, and granted Russia free access to the Pacific Ocean. [22] The Sino-Russian border was later further delineated in the Treaty of Peking of 1860 when the Ussuri Territory (the Maritime Territory ), which was previously a joint possession, became Russian. [23]

Khabarovsk Krai was established on 20 October 1938, when the Far Eastern Krai was split into the Khabarovsk and Primorsky Krais . [24] Kamchatka Oblast , which was originally subordinated to the Far Eastern Krai, fell under the Jurisdiction of Khabarovsk Krai, along with its two National Okrugs, Chukotka and Koryak . In 1947, the northern part of Sakhalin was removed from the Krai to join the southern part and form Sakhalin Oblast . In 1948, parts of its southwestern territories were removed from the Krai to form Amur Oblast . In 1953, Magadan Oblast was established from the northern parts of the Krai and was given jurisdiction over Chukotka National Okrug, which was originally under the jurisdiction of Kamchatka oblast. In 1956, Kamchatka Oblast became its own region and took Koryak National Okrug with it. The Krai took its modern form in 1991, just before the USSR's collapse when the Jewish Autonomous Oblast was created within its territory. On 24 April 1996, Khabarovsk signed a power-sharing agreement with the federal government, granting it autonomy. [25] This agreement would be abolished on 12 August 2002. [26]

During the Soviet period, the high authority in the oblast was shared between three persons: The first secretary of the Khabarovsk CPSU Committee (who, in reality, had the biggest authority), the chairman of the oblast Soviet (legislative power), and the Chairman of the oblast Executive Committee (executive power). Since 1991, CPSU lost all the power, and the head of the Oblast administration, and eventually the governor, was appointed/elected alongside elected regional parliament .

The Charter of Khabarovsk Krai is the fundamental law of the krai. The Legislative Duma of Khabarovsk Krai is the regional standing legislative (representative) body. The Legislative Duma exercises its authority by passing laws, resolutions, and other legal acts and by supervising the implementation and observance of the laws and other legal acts passed by it. The highest executive body is the Krai Government, which includes territorial executive bodies, such as district administrations, committees, and commissions that facilitate development and run the day to day matters of the province. The Krai Administration supports the activities of the Governor , who is the highest official and acts as guarantor of the observance of the Charter in accordance with the Constitution of Russia .

On 9 July 2020, the governor of the region, Sergei Furgal , was arrested and flown to Moscow. The 2020 Khabarovsk Krai protests began on 11 July 2020, in support of Furgal. [27]

Khabarovsk Krai is the most industrialized territory of the Far East of Russia, producing 30% of the total industrial products in the Far Eastern Economic Region.

The machine construction industry consists primarily of a highly developed military–industrial complex of large-scale aircraft- and shipbuilding enterprises. [28] The Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Production Association is currently among the krai's most successful enterprises, and for years has been the largest taxpayer of the territory. [28] Other major industries include timber-working and fishing , along with metallurgy in the main cities. Komsomolsk-on-Amur is the iron and steel centre of the Far East; a pipeline from northern Sakhalin supplies the petroleum-refining industry in the city of Khabarovsk . In the Amur basin, there is also some cultivation of wheat and soybeans . The administrative centre , Khabarovsk, is at the junction of the Amur River and the Trans-Siberian Railway .

The region's mineral resources are relatively underdeveloped. Khabarovsk Krai contains large gold mining operations (Highland Gold, Polus Gold), a major but low-grade copper deposit being explored by IG Integro Group , and a world-class tin district which was a major contributor to the Soviet industrial complex and is currently being revitalised by Far Eastern Tin (Festivalnoye mine) and by Sable Tin Resources Archived March 13, 2017, at the Wayback Machine , which is developing the Sable Tin Deposit (Sobolinoye) , a large high-grade deposit, 25   km from Solnechny town.

According to a 2012 survey, [37] 26.2% of the population of Khabarovsk Krai adheres to the Russian Orthodox Church , 4% are unaffiliated generic Christians , 1% adhere to other Orthodox churches or are believers in Orthodox Christianity who do not belong to any church, while 1% are adherents of Islam . In addition, 28% of the population declared to be "spiritual but not religious", 23% are atheist , and 16.8% follow other religions or did not give an answer to the question. [37]

The city was a host to the 1981 Bandy World Championship as well as to the 2015 Bandy World Championship . For the 2015 games, twenty-one teams originally were expected, which would have been four more than the record-making seventeen from the 2014 tournament , but eventually, only sixteen teams came. The A Division of the 2018 Bandy World Championship was again to be played in Khabarovsk. [42]
