magical tours schotland

Scotland has many tales of magic and myth. Follow Visit Scotland's new Witch Trail to see 15 magical locations, each with a supernatural story to tell

Scotland’s history is full of superstitions and supernatural occurrences, with each community passing down spooky tales from generation to generation. In 2022, VisitScotland is using its Year of Stories to help you explore 15 of its witchiest locations, attractions and experiences, alongside a new downloadable trail and map to guide you on your Caledonian adventure. Get set to discover some sinister stories and darker aspects of Scotland’s history, as well as some truly magical places.

Calanais Standing Stones, Isle of Lewis

Standing for over 5,000 years, this extraordinary cross-shaped setting of stones has a rich culture of magical folklore. One legend tells how a white fairy cow came to give milk to the starving people of Calanais, and the village was saved – until a rumoured witch brought the giving to an end by milking the cow dry before vanishing. The stones also served as inspiration for Outlander ’s magical Craigh na Dun, where Claire (Caitríona Balfe) travels through time.

Strathspey Storywalks, the Highlands

Wander through woods and along trails around snowy Aviemore, discovering the incredible history and ecology of this special part of the Cairngorms National Park . You can taste wild teas and share local stories of kings, fairy folk and highwaymen. A guide will help you honour the memory of so-called witches by tuning in to the quiet voices within the landscape.

Blair Castle, Perthshire

Not only has it been the home of the Atholl family for over seven centuries, Blair Castle also has a fascinating history of visitors, including Mary Queen of Scots, Bonnie Prince Charlie and an alleged witch (naturally). Legend has it that the mountains overlooking the castle have acted as a hiding spot for a powerful witch who could shapeshift into wildlife. Speaking of which, keep an eye out for creatures on a stroll around the grounds.

Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle, Argyll

This lake is said to be haunted by the witch of Ben Cruachan, named after the tallest mountain in the region. It's said that the witch was tired from a long day of herding deer and fell asleep on her duty to plug a groundwater spring, thus flooding the valley by accident and forming Loch Awe. These days, it’s a perfect spot for wild swimming. Ruined Kilchurn Castle watches over the still surface of the loch, but it’s currently closed for conservation works.

The Root of Magic, Glasgow

Every aspiring witch or wizard must fuel their powers from time to time. There’s no better place than family-run magical creature store The Root of Magic in Glasgow’s West End to enjoy a bite or a tipple. Tuck into the Monster Toastie of Monsters or a Butterscotch Beer in the Potions café, sip on citrusy Worms Wart Soup in the bar, or brew up some bubbly magical concoctions yourself in a potions cocktail class.

Glasgow Women’s Library, Glasgow

This wonderful treasure trove is full of historical and contemporary artefacts and archive materials celebrating the achievements of women. The team’s vision is of a world in which every woman is able to fulfil her potential and where women’s contributions are fully recognised and valued; magical or non-magical.

Galloway Wild Foods, Dumfries & Galloway

It’s amazing what spellbinding concoctions can be created from foraged delights. Crouching down to pick a plump mushroom, or standing on the tips of your toes to reach the juiciest berry, is a rewarding way to connect with nature. Founder and Association of Foragers member Mark Williams teaches all areas of foraging among the Scottish pines, including the uses of traditional and modern medicinal plants.

Kirkwall Witchy Walk, Orkney

For tales of historical witchcraft, torture, spells and charms, look no further than Orkney, an island that was once a hotbed of allegations, accusations and gruesome executions. Peer into Marwick’s Hole in St Magnus Cathedral’s dungeon, where those accused of witchcraft were imprisoned. Plus, walk in the footsteps of the condemned to Gallow’Ha on a guided tour.

Macbeth’s Hillock, Moray Speyside

Tales around the campfire get spooky at Macbeth’s Hillock, a glamping site located on what's said to be where Shakespeare’s character met the three witches that told of his rise to king and future demise. At this mythical meeting place, find five luxury glamping pods, each with its own firepit for marshmallow toasting, a picnic table and masses of green space.

Glen Dye School of Wild Wellness and Bushcraft, Aberdeenshire

Visit Glen Dye to be immersed in all that the magical Aberdeenshire countryside has to offer. It is a private estate surrounded by wilderness and moorland with 30,000 acres of stunning land acting as the perfect playground for all modern-day witches to connect with the therapeutic benefits of mother nature. Think foraging, fire lighting, river swimming and shelter building.

East Neuk Seaweed, Fife

Did you know that seaweed has a key place in the healing legacy of Scotland and was possibly used by the wise women and healers of times gone by? At East Neuk Seaweed , pro seaweed harvester Jayson Byles offers various hands-on workshops in coastal locations throughout Fife that highlight the healing properties and nutritional value of this often-misunderstood (and surprisingly delicious) sea vegetable.

Witchcraft and Wizardry Escape Room, Stirling

At Escape Stirling, you can find yourself locked in a classroom full of tricks, puzzles, challenges and spells. Aspiring witches and wizards must solve logical puzzles, uncover clues and follow the storyline closely to escape the grasps of the evil professor (and graduate with a distinction at the end of term). Reward yourself afterwards with a stroll through this magic wee city with a big history.

The Witchery by the Castle, Edinburgh

Located in a 16th-century building at the gates of Edinburgh Castle, The Witchery is undoubtedly the most atmospheric dining destination in Edinburgh. The hotel and restaurant takes its name from the hundreds of women and men burned at the stake on Castlehill, and modern-day visitors can eat from the tasting menu in an original oak-panelled dining room then unwind in one of the lavishly decorated suites. Rumour has it that the place is often haunted by celebrities, as well as ghosts.

Invisible Cities tours, Edinburgh

Discover the stories of the fascinating women who reportedly walked the cobbled streets of Edinburgh in years gone by. From mothers and doctors to murderers and body snatchers, and those accused of witchcraft, an expert guide will tell you all about the imprint female residents have left on the capital city. There are also tours on the themes of crime and punishment, the Royal Mile, and the languages of Scotland.

Abbotsford, Scottish Borders

The home of 19th-century novelist and poet Sir Walter Scott on the banks of the River Tweed is perhaps one of the most famous houses in the world. But not everything is as it seems. Did you know it also boasts one of the rarest and most important collections of books on witchcraft? Visitors to Scott’s stunning library can see his treasured Witch Corner and find out how these 250 books on witchcraft, magic and demonology inspired the writer’s iconic novels.

What our customers say

We so enjoyed our tour round Edinburgh with the lovely Helen. Not only was she the most delightful company but she gave us such an informative and educational insight into Edinburgh and its endless history.

I thoroughly recommend Infinite Scotland. We had a 6.5 hour guided tour of Edinburgh which flashed by so quickly we didn’t notice the time. We saw and learnt so much of the city and its history, despite spending many months here in the last year. Helen asked us beforehand what we were interested in and […]

Please thank Helen particularly as she is exceptional and a wonderful guide.

Scotland Private Tours - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the tipping etiquette in scotland.

Although tipping in Scotland is not compulsory, choosing to tip in restaurants is generally seen as polite and can be used as a kind gesture to demonstrate your appreciation of the quality of their service. Although around 10% is seen as the standard tipping rate, if the service has been of a premium standard then don’t hesitate to leave more. Bear in mind that this is entirely up to you and that there is not much of an expectation for you to do so.

Bartenders serving drinks in bars and pubs in Scotland don’t expect to be tipped by customers, although these are always welcomed. With regards to tipping your walking tour guides or driver tour guides, the same rules apply. Don’t feel obliged to tip but also don’t hesitate to do so if they have demonstrated a stellar service that has enhanced your holiday experience. However if you feel the service has been exceptional on your Scotland private tour then feel free to tip what you feel reflects the service.

Scottish Mythology & Mystical Places in Scotland

Imagine a time before scientific reasoning could explain the sudden shifts in Scotland's fickle weather. Not to mention the strange land formations, ancient standing stone circles, and otherworldly scenery.

You'll start to understand how Scottish mythology emerged. Coupled with the Scots' famous knack for storytelling, these Celtic myths and legends have been carried down through generations and live on for visitors to experience today.

To tour Scotland and her storybook landscapes is to believe in the supernatural yourself. Below are just a few examples of the mythical creatures you might hear about – or encounter, perhaps – in the most mystical places in Scotland.

  • Explore these top-rated Scotland vacations  to begin your magical adventure

1. Unicorns

Unicorns are having a moment these days. But look beyond the novelty shops, and you’ll see it’s not just a childhood toy or whimsical fancy-dress costume. The unicorn is, in fact, Scotland's national animal. If you can call it an animal.

Written depictions of unicorns go all the way back to ancient Babylonians and Celts. By the 12th century, the unicorn came to be associated with nobility and power in Scotland. Eventually it became a symbol of Scotland's freedom-loving spirit and its hauntingly beautiful, wild nature.

You can see the unicorn wrapped in gold chains on the royal coats of arms of both Scotland and the United Kingdom. One interpretation of this is that the Scottish kings were so powerful, they could master the strongest beast of all.

When you look at Scotland's majestic landscapes and turbulent history, it’s clear there's no better creature to represent this untamed land and its people.

Scottish horse on the Isle of Harris

Where might you find unicorns in Scotland?

Isle of skye.

If ever a unicorn would prance, it would be on this mist-shrouded, mountainous island. Skye is undoubtedly one of the most magical places to visit in Scotland.

Eilean Donan Castle

Visit the 13th-century Eilean Donan Castle , enthroned on an island between two lochs. Just try to not imagine a majestic white steed galloping down the stony bridge. You can't.

The Northern Highlands

A land so wild, unicorns are far from the only magic lurking here. Drive the North Coast 500 route and you'll see.

Keep an eye out for the unicorn figure at historic sites in the Scottish capital, including Holyrood Palace and Edinburgh Castle .

Have you ever heard of a “kelpie”? In Scottish folklore, kelpies are shape-shifting, horse-like water spirits said to have the strength of 100 horses. You might see them lurking by Scotland’s lochs and rivers. Careful though. Contrary to unicorns, kelpies possess a dark and dangerous nature.

Down by the water, a kelpie might trick you into riding on its back. But beware of this water horse with its dripping wet mane. Anyone who falls for its cries is whisked away into the watery depths by this treacherous mythological figure.

The Kelpies in Falkirk

Where might you find kelpies in Scotland?

Loch coruisk.

Rumoured to be the home of these supernatural creatures is Loch Coruisk , a freshwater loch at the foot of the Black Cuillin range on the Isle of Skye.

This lake has been the subject of many Scottish writers and painters over the years. Today you can even go in search of the kelpies on a 45-minute boat tour from the village of Elgol.

For a fantastic photo opportunity, you cannot miss The Kelpies , two giant steel horse head statues near the city of Falkirk.

Standing nearly 100 feet (30 metres) high over the Forth & Clyde Canal, these are the largest pair of equine sculptures in the world. The Kelpies are located in the park at The Helix, though you'll easily spot the massive figures while driving along the M9 motorway.

  • Keep an eye out for kelpies on a self-drive tour through Scotland

You might already know about the legendary Loch Ness Monster . Nessie, the "water beast", was first chronicled in the 5th century by an Irish monk, St Columba, but came to the world’s attention in 1933.

That year a Scottish newspaper reported that a visitor from London had sighted a prehistoric, dragon-like animal bobbing in Loch Ness. Some months later the first photograph claiming to depict Nessie was published.

While many dismiss the legend, consider that Loch Ness is the second deepest body of water in Scotland. It contains more fresh water than all the lakes of England and Wales combined, which seems like plenty of room for a giant monster.

Could Nessie have descended from a species of dinosaur? Decide for yourself by visiting the lakeside exhibition centre, whose Loch Ness Project explores this famous monster mythology.

Loch Ness, Scotland

Where might you find Nessie in Scotland?

If this huge water beast exists, there’s only one place you would find it: Loch Ness! Discover this mystical loch, situated southwest from Inverness in the Scottish Highlands.

  • Have a local guide share their insight with you on a small group tour of Scotland

If you've followed the TV series Outlander , then you probably know that Highlanders had many superstitions surrounding fairies.

According to Scottish folklore, these “faeries” or “little people” come in different forms and have different temperaments. They can be friendly to you or unleash their wrath if you do not respect their wishes.

You could be blessed with good luck if you are kind to the Sidhe fairies. But avoid visiting the deep, dark woods at night. Otherwise you might be punished by the Ghillie Dhu – the “dark-haired lad” in Scottish Gaelic. He won’t like it much if you encroach on his forest home.

Fairy Pools, Isle of Skye

Where might you find fairies in Scotland?

Wander the mythical valley that is the Fairy Glen on the Isle of Skye, and you may stumble upon some of the Sidhe faeries.

Fairy Pools

The Fairy Pools are another place associated with “the little people” on the Isle of Skye. Find them at Glenbrittle, in the shadow of the Black Cuillin mountains.

Head to the northern coasts and islands of Scotland and you might be lucky enough to spot a seal swimming in the sea. But careful not to get too close, as legend has it that these are shape-shifting creatures with great seductive powers.

Selkies are mythical beings that change from seals to human forms when they are on dry land. You’re most likely to catch sight of them around the islands of Orkney and Shetland. They are said to be devastatingly beautiful and will charm you into falling hopelessly in love with them.

Keep your distance otherwise you might find yourself horribly heartbroken when you leave Scotland!

Yesnaby Cliffs in Orkney

Where might you find selkies in Scotland?

Orkney islands.

Take the ferry to the Orkney Isles and be on the lookout for seals and selkies frolicking in the water.

Shetland Islands

You could continue your journey by travelling further north to the Shetland Isles. Rumour has it that selkies dwell here too.

  • Search for selkies on these package tours of the Scottish Isles

6. Blue men of the Minch

Selkies aren’t the only supernatural beings lurking beneath the sea. Venture to the beautiful Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides , to learn about the legend of the blue-skinned men. The myth is that these blue men of the Minch like to stir up a storm – quite literally.

In the past, winter storms would’ve been very frightening for sailors trying to make the crossing between the Scottish mainland and Isle of Lewis. Local folk feared that the blue men – or storm kelpies – would take advantage of this to bring sailors and boats down with them.

Seilebost Beach, Isle of Harris

Where might you find the blue men in Scotland?

Isle of lewis.

Thankfully, journeying to the Isle of Lewis is safe today thanks to the CalMac ferry crossing. When you get there, you’re rewarded with some of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland (and the UK), as well as a famous Neolithic site: the Calanais Standing Stones.

This stone circle is also shrouded in myth. It is said that the large stones were once giants that were punished for refusing to convert to Christianity.

  • Visit the Outer Hebrides on a summer tour of Scotland

You'll get goosebumps just about everywhere in Scotland, with its hauntingly beautiful cemeteries and ancient castle ruins. If you love ghost stories, there’s plenty in store for you here. You’ll hear many a tale of spectres and ghouls in Scotland.

The Green Lady

Visit Crathes Castle, located between Aberdeen and Cairngorms National Park , to learn about the Green Lady. You might see her ghostly form cradling an infant child as you wander through this 16th-century castle.

Bluidy Mackenzie

See if you encounter some spectres as you walk through the Old Town in Edinburgh after dark. Navigate the medieval streets and enter the Greyfriars Kirkyard, said to be haunted by the ghost of Sir George Mackenzie.

Edinburgh in winter

Did you know that Edinburgh has a subterranean world too? The South Bridge Vaults is a network of chambers and alleys that was closed off for centuries.

Today you can descend into this “Underground City” and learn about its eerie past. You might feel a tugging on your clothes – that’ll be Wee Annie, the ghost of a girl who wanders hopelessly in the darkness.

The Headless Drummer

Edinburgh has more ghost stories up its sleeve for you. There are thought to be many phantom spirits trapped in Edinburgh Castle , including the Headless Drummer.

Listen out for the sound of a distant drumming as you wander through the ancient walls of this iconic castle. That’s the drummer boy making his presence known to you. Many believe that he’s been haunting this fortress ever since Oliver Cromwell, an English general and statesman, invaded it in 1650.

Full Tour Itinerary

Select Day:

Day 1 - Inverness - Jacobite Steam Train - Isle of Skye

Heading south from Inverness, our odyssey begins on the mysterious shores of Loch Ness. Here, you can take to the water and cruise its gentle swell before alighting to explore the atmospheric ruins of historic Urquhart Castle .

Our journey continues through the beauty of the Great Glen, where we’ll stop at the Commando Memorial to see the towering bulk of Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest mountain.

More breathtaking views await as we board the famous Jacobite Steam Train (the real Hogwarts Express from the Harry Potter movies). Our journey on the West Highland Line is claimed to be one of the World’s best rail journeys, but we’ll let you be the judge!   (not available on April 07, April 28 or September 06 departures)

See Ben Nevis from a different angle as we leave Fort William, then travel over the famous Glenfinnan viaduct. Enjoy great views of Loch Eilt before the beautiful sands of Morar stretch out ahead of us as we make our way into Mallaig.

There’s free time to enjoy lunch before catching the ferry “Over the sea to Skye”. Landfall is the port of Armadale on the Sleat Peninsula. Back aboard our coach, there are stunning views of the Cullin Hills as we head to the colourful harbour town of Portree , where tales of feuds, folklore and faeries accompany the finest local seafood and whisky.

Overnight: Portree (2 nights)

Day 2 - Exploring the Isle of Skye

A delightful day of history and impressive scenery awaits. Our tour starts at the enchanting Fairy Pools . The 2.4 km walk is rewarded with a series of natural pools and waterfalls where the blue and green water provides a magical appearance.

Positioned at the head of Loch Dunvegan is the delightful village of Dunvegan, our lunchtime destination. After enjoying the local delicacies, there will be time to stroll around the village to admire the views and explore the local craft shops.

This afternoon we tour through the Jurassic scenery of the Trotternish Peninsula.

History surrounds us at every turn – not least at Kilmuir and its moving memorial to Flora MacDonald. Here, you’ll hear the fascinating tale of how she disguised Bonnie Prince Charlie as her maid to help him flee Government troops in 1746 before escaping ‘o’er the sea to Skye’.

Stop to enjoy a thrilling walk through The Quiraing to explore one of the most unexpected and exciting rock formations in the British Isles.

Our tour continues to Kilt Rock, whose cliff face is formed of black basalt columns that are said to resemble the folds of the garment that give this landmark its name. Later we’ll see the impressive 50m (165 ft) high pinnacle named The Old Man of Storr before returning to Portree.

Day 3 - Isle of Skye - Whisky Distillery - Inverness

A hearty Highland breakfast is an essential start to our last day of discovery. So after enjoying traditional Scottish fare, we return to the mainland and make the short journey to see  Eilean Donan , one of Scotland’s most attractive castles. It sits on a little island at the head of Loch Duich and has been featured in several movies, including Highlander and James Bond.

Our next visit is the attractive town of Beauly. It is thought that the town was named “Beau Lieu” - Beautiful Place, by the French monks who built a Priory here in the 13th Century. It was visited by Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1564 and still stands in the centre of the town, surrounded by trees.

There’s a stop at a malt whisky distillery where we can discover how “uisge beatha” is made using time-honoured methods and enjoy a taste of the end product.

After a short drive, there’s a brief stop at Culloden Battlefield , where you can learn about the famous battle, in 1746, between the Jacobite army of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Government troops.

Our last visit is to Clava Cairns , a group of three prehistoric burial cairns surrounded by standing stones. This picturesque setting is thought to have inspired the Outlander author, Diana Gabaldon, to create the cleft stone of Craigh Na Dun, where Claire time-travels back to 1743.

Our tour ends in the Highland Capital in the early evening.

What is the journey on the Jacobite Steam Train like?

Described as one of the great railway journeys of the world this memorable trip will take you past a list of impressive extremes.

Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!

The train will cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct (a location made famous in the Harry Potter films) which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. The train may pause on the viaduct, time permitting, to allow you to take in the magnificent view.

Standard class tickets are included in the cost of the tour. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to upgrade these tickets to First Class.

Can I reserve specific seats on the coach?

Seating on this tour is on a first come, first served basis and cannot be pre-booked.

If you are travelling as part of a group please make sure that all members of the party arrive at the departure point together.

How many people will be in the group?

The group size is normally between 16 and 29 passengers.

Should I make dinner reservations for an evening meal in Portree?

Yes! Portree is the capital and main town on the Isle of Skye, and therefore is a very popular destination, especially in the summer months. There are many excellent restaurants in Portree , and they tend to get pretty busy, so we strongly recommend making reservations for your evening meal to avoid disappointment.

We advise not making your dinner reservations for any earlier than 7pm to allow plenty of time for the coach to return to Portree, after a full day of exploring the wonders of the Magical Isle.

You can also check out our Portree blog for more tips and information.

The Sacred Scotland Tour, conducted brilliantly by my brother Ryan McKenna, came at a poignant time in my life when I was going through a bit of a dark night of the soul. And this tour was a perfect transformational experience to lift me back into depth and purpose. Truly, I couldn’t have imagined how powerful and meaningful it would be for me. Ryan masterfully guided us through a beautiful constellation of sacred sites, ever illuminating inspiring wisdom to parallel the breathtaking lands we visited. And it wasn’t just a tour: Ryan truly initiated us into the wisdoms of the ancients, making us feel as though we were part of a renewal of ancestral power as well as helping awakening the power of the sacred sites. On top of that, Ryan supplied ample Celtic music in the evenings, rousing into community jams that forged a lovely soul family vibe, along with dropping his genius astrological insights at every turn. The accommodations were all first-rate as well as the sumptuous and nourishing meals curated by his team. The Sacred Scotland Tour feels like a highly significant pilgrimage experience that evokes magic and purpose in all who experience it. I recommend it for anyone wishing to know the deeper beauty of Scotland, Celtic wisdom and to simply nourish one’s soul deeply.

I can still hear the high tin whistle singing and the deep Bodhran thundering upon the crystal mountain peak as we look down upon my old highland home; I have finally arrived. I’ve been waiting my whole life for the right moment to return to my people’s lands, and this tour was the perfect way to be reintroduced. From the old growth grooves of Roselyn Chapel to the Standing Stones of Calanais, we connected deeply to the spirit of the land and learned about the ancient peoples and beliefs of our ancestors. Through his vast historical knowledge and the Celtic wisdom he embodies, Ryan led us with reverence through the magical lands of Alba.

The music, food, and accommodations were superb and with Ryan’s attention to every detail and genuine care for the comfort of all the participants; I was always feeling held and safe as we explored the sacred sites of Scotland. I am so incredibly grateful to Sacred Scotland Tours and for Ryan McKenna for beautifully guiding the reconnection to my ancestral homeland in a pure sacred way. It was so life changing and profound that I would love to do it again and again; I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. 10/10.

The Sacred Scotland Tour was a heart-expanding introduction into the ancient sites & rich history of the North. Our magical group was sinking deep into the connection with the sacred places full presence & devotion. The guidance of Ryan McKenna on the tour touched upon story telling, musical sharings & embodied celtic wisdom. Highly recommend the mystical journey to Scotland for remembering the ancestral roots.

Ryan is a guide of great depth, reverence, and love for the lands and culture of Scotland. It was an honor to receive his insights and stewardship to some of the most amazing energy vortexes and sacred places. Plus, he brought together an amazing community to share the experience with. If you’re looking to connect with Scotland in a safe, deep, and meaningful way, Ryan is your man.

The Sacred Scotland trip on summer solstice was a magical experience. The group that Ryan collected around himself could not have been more perfectly selected. I made so many deep connections to the people and to the land, and Ryan curated the perfect container for the magic. I loved the yoga, the organic food, the wisdom of the beautiful people sharing space with me, and the reverence with which we approached the ancient power sites. So much energetic shifting occurred for me on this trip. I think it will take months before I can even express the shifts that occurred. If you’re looking for real connection – if you’re about the land and the energy – then this trip is definitely for you. Many blessings to you on your journey.

If your soul is calling you to go to Scotland there is only one person that I have in mind for taking you there and this is Ryan McKenna. Ryan will take your heart and spirit on a magical journey to Scotland and the history, the love and the passion that he shares for his homeland is truly amazing. I went to the Sacred Scotland Tour the summer of 2023 with my husband and we had the most incredible experience. We traveled with a group – all people we did not know beforehand, but that quickly became like family. We traveled all over Scotland including the Island of SKy and Isle of Lewis and each place we visited was breathtaking and sacred. Ryan shared history, magic and we brought offerings to each place. We prayed , danced , healed and loved the land. All the people that Ryan worked with from Scott ( our driver ) to Shannon and Rory of CAIM and Krystal our yoga teacher – were just wonderful people. Thank you Ryan and most of all thank you Scotland for bringing us all home to our hearts and ancestors. I urge anyone who wants to go to Scotland to go with Ryan and Sacred Scotland Tour.”

“While work exchanging at Posada Natura in Costa Rica, I met Ryan McKenna who was the chef for some of the retreats happening at that beautiful sanctuary by the river. He said I looked like a ‘pict’, and so I began to learn more about the Celtic aspects of my ancestry, what the true natives from there were really about and how these fae/elven folk are now as rare in their homelands as the Native American Indians are too theirs.

Once back in South Africa I witnessed Ryan starting to leading his own wellness retreats and guiding people from all over the world on his Sacred Scotland and Ireland tours. I soon felt the call to experience this communion with my ancestral lands too, and so during a visit to my sisters family there near Edinburgh I decided to hop on that magic bus 🙂

We were a bunch of characters from all walks of life and common threads to the magical isles touring Scotland with the best Celtic music I’d ever heard, great conversation and good vibes 🙂 Our accommodations were very comfortable in beautiful settings along the way as we visited many places including the Roslyn Chapel, Callanish Standing Stones, the Caledonian Forests and the Isle of Lewis. Something about being in those lush forests by the river, in those meadows and meditating against the giant ancient portals of those standing stones felt deeply profound and moving to me in ways not easy to describe. Thankfully Ryan and his friends always had a way of ‘balancing the sacred and the silly’ so that through the lessons in history and reverence for the land and ancestors, there was also plenty of laughter and pixie mischief.

I would recommend this tour to anyone with any Celtic ancestry and/or curiosity for experiencing and learning more about these beautiful lands, their magic light and the people of the mists and the water.”

10 Magical Places In Scotland Where You'd Think Faeries Really Did Reside

From fairy dwellings to gateways between mortals and the supernatural, here are some of the most magical spots in Scotland linked to Faerie folklore.

  • Scottish folklore is filled with stories of mischievous and sometimes malevolent faeries that inhabit remote and enchanting landscapes like the Fairy Glen on the Isle of Skye.
  • Loch Awe is believed to be home to a water faerie known as each-uisge, a terrifying shape-shifting creature that drowned its victims.
  • Aberdeen is known for its connection to selkies, mythical beings that appear as seals in the water but can transform into humans on land. Visitors can spot seals and immerse themselves in Scottish folklore along the coastal shores of Aberdeen.

Faeries are mythical creatures found in the folklore and mythology of multiple cultures around the world. While belief in the Fae has faded greatly over the centuries, faeries are deeply embedded in Scottish folklore, and some Scots still adhere to the superstitions surrounding these ethereal beings.

Sometimes referred to as "the Wee Folk" or "the Good Folk," faeries are believed to inhabit remote and enchanting landscapes, such as hills, glens, and lochs, and since Scotland is filled with gorgeous castles and abundant natural beauty, it's no surprise so much of this country looks like it came right out of a fairytale.

Scottish faeries are typically depicted as mischievous and playful, yet they can also be malevolent and even downright murderous. Faeries can just as easily guide a human to good fortune as they can bring them despair. Historically, small offerings and trinkets, such as milk or bread, were left to appease the Fae. Failing to do so could invoke their wrath.

Faeries can still be found today in popular media such as books, movies, and music, and their presence is heavily associated with many locations throughout Scotland. Here are some of the most magical places in Scotland that are forever linked to the Fae.

1 The Fairy Glen Of Skye

The Isle of Skye's natural beauty is truly awe-inspiring, which is probably why this Scottish Island is so heavily associated with faeries and magic. Filled with jagged mountain peaks, rolling hills, rocky coastlines, and crystal-clear lochs, this island is the largest and most famous of the islands that make up the Inner Hebrides, an archipelago located on the west coast of mainland Scotland.

The Isle of Skye is home to the Fairy Glen, a peculiar landslide believed to be the dwelling place of faeries . Local legends have long speculated that faeries gathered around the Fairy Glen and left behind the peculiar rock formations that exist today. Complete with winding paths, miniature lochans, and an eerie sense that a few faeries might still be watching from the shadows, the Fairy Glen is a place where the magic of Scotland truly comes to life.

  • Folklore Connection: The dwelling place of the Fae
  • Location: Isle of Skye

2 The Fairy Pools Of Skye

The Fairy Pools are another one of the most magical spots in Scotland; it's where the natural beauty of Skye merges seamlessly with the enchanting world of Scottish faerie lore. At first glance, the Fairy Pools are a collection of enchanting waterfalls and crystal-clear pools.

In Scottish folklore, however, these pools are believed to be a favored bathing spot for faeries, lending them an otherworldly aura. The geological wonder of the Fairy Pools lies in their pristine, blue-hued waters against the striking Black Cuillin mountains. Visitors can hike to this magical location and, for a few moments, believe they are in a true fairytale.

  • Folklore Connection: Bathing spot of the Fae

Loch Ness might have the Loch Ness monster, but Loch Awe is said to have a far more sinister mythological figure in its dark waters. As one of Scotland's largest and most mysterious lochs, Loch Awe is believed to be home to a water faerie known as each-uisge.

In Scottish folklore, the each-uisge is a terrifying horse-like creature known for its shape-shifting abilities and penchant for drowning its victims once mounted. Culturally, these stories served as a warning to be careful around Scotland's deep and treacherous lakes, lochs, and rivers.

Today, visitors can explore Loch Awe's haunting beauty and its historic castles while keeping an eye out for any glimpses of the creatures said to dwell beneath its surface.

  • Folklore Connection: Each-uisge
  • Location: Argyll and Bute, Scotland

Each-uisge is not limited to the Loch Awe. In folklore, this creature is said to appear in several bodies of water throughout Scotland.

Another magical place known for its connection to mythical marine creatures is Aberdeen, Scotland. Aberdeen's folklore is filled with tales of selkies inhabiting its coastal shores. As one of the many sea creatures featured in folklore , selkies are mythical beings that appear as seals in the water but can shed their skin and become beautiful humans on land.

On the shores of Aberdeen, the lore of these enigmatic creatures comes to life. Visitors can take picturesque coastal strolls and spot local seals in their natural habitat as they immerse themselves in Scotland's rich folklore and maritime culture.

  • Folklore Connection: Selkies
  • Location: Northeast Scotland

5 Eilean Donan Castle

Perched on a small island where three lochs meet, Eilean Donan Castle is a fortress in the Scottish Highlands that holds a special place in local folklore.

Originally built in the 13th century as a defense against Norse invasions, this castle has been the site of numerous reports involving roaming spirits, faeries, and other supernatural encounters. It's a place where the enchantment of Scottish folklore and surreal architecture come together, offering visitors a truly magical visit.

  • Folklore Connection: Its fairytale architecture and appearance
  • Location: Dornie, Scotland

6 Doon Hill & Fairy Knowe

Located in the heart of the Trossachs National Park, Aberfoyle's Doon Hill and Fairy Knowe have long been rumored to hold a portal that connects the human and faerie realms.

This location features a charming trail and grassy mound that holds a few mysteries. In the 17th century, Robert Kirk, a local minister and folklorist, famously studied Doon Hill, believing it held a gateway to a magical faerie world. He unfortunately passed away before his book on the Faerie realm was published.

It was eventually printed posthumously, titled The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns, and Fairies . Local legend states faeries were behind his sudden death as they did not want him to reveal their secrets. Today, visitors to Doon Hill can explore the same wooded trail Robert Kirk traversed and leave offerings to the faeries.

  • Folklore Connection: Portal between the human and faerie worlds; Folklorist Robert Kirk
  • Location: Aberfoyle, Scotland

7 The Eildon Hills

The Eildon Hills are three stunning hills in the Scottish Borders, which are said to be home to the Queen of the Faeries. The Queen of Elfame makes several appearances in Scottish ballads, literature, and lore.

Most famously, she is said to have taken the real-life Thomas the Rhymer to her magical realm and gifted him the gift of prophecy . When he returned to the mortal world, he became a famous prophet. Today, visitors can hike the Eildon Hills and marvel at the unparalleled views of the area's natural beauty.

  • Folklore Connection: Home of the Queen of the Fairies
  • Location: South of Melrose, Scotland

8 The Fairy Glen Of Rosemarkie

Located on Scotland's Black Isle, Rosemarkie's Fairy Glen is steeped in Scottish folklore and faerie legends. This serene glen boasts lush greenery, beautiful waterfalls, and a peaceful aura that envelopes visitors.

According to local lore, this glen is a favored gathering spot for faeries, who, like humans, are attracted to the area's natural beauty. Visitors to Fairy Glen can explore its walking paths, take in the surrounding vistas, and immerse themselves in the enchanting world of Scottish faerie mythology by leaving behind small offerings for the Good Folk in the hopes of earning their favor and blessings.

  • Folklore Connection: Dwelling of the Fae
  • Location: Rosemarkie, a village in Scotland's Black Isle

9 Loch Ness

For centuries, there have been rumors of a legendary creature dwelling in the murky waters of Loch Ness. While some claim the Loch Ness Monster is a giant sea serpent, mythological dragon, or descendant of a dinosaur, Scottish folklore believes this creature is a kelpie.

Kelpies are possibly the most common faerie found in Scotland. These shape-shifting water spirits take on the shape of beautiful horses to lure humans. Though often depicted as malevolent beings that drag their victims to watery graves, there have been some instances in Scottish folklore where kelpies have guided and helped humans.

No matter the case, no visit to Scotland can be completed without visiting the home of the most legendary creature in all of Scottish folklore. Tourists visiting the area can embark on boat tours across the loch and learn more about the Loch Ness Monster .

  • Folklore Connection: Loch Ness Monster; possibly a kelpie
  • Location: Scottish Highlands (Southwest of Inverness)

10 Helix Park

Standing at 100 feet tall, the Kelpies in Helix Park is a massive statue depicting the mythic water spirits found throughout Scottish folklore. Kelpies are shape-shifting faeries that most commonly take on the form of horses to lure humans towards them.

The gorgeous statue in Helix Park does an excellent job of capturing the beauty and might of these mythological beings. Visitors can explore the park's gorgeous surroundings and even take a tour inside the Kelpies. The park also holds a visitor center, café, gift shop, and insights into the Kelpies' story, making it a memorable and immersive folklore experience for all ages.

  • Folklore Connection: Kelpies
  • Location: Grangemouth, Scotland

8 Magical Places In Scotland Totally Worth Visiting

There are so many wonderful and magical places in Scotland, as it is arguably one of the most beautiful places for scenery in the world. If you’re looking for a summer road trip , I would definitely recommend Scotland, as the roads will be just as awe-inspiring as the locations and your Instagram feed will be on point.

The weather might not be perfect here, and yes it does get extremely cold, but trust me, don’t strike it off your list yet—it’s so worth it for all the history and scenery. From the Highlands to Edinburgh, I’ll be sharing my top 8 magical places in Scotland.

1. Loch Ness

Loch Ness, Scotland

Situated around 13 miles outside Inverness, this is an absolutely gorgeous part of Scotland. If you’re in the area, you can take a boat ride on Loch Ness to search for possibly one of the most famous folklore creatures in the world, The Loch Ness Monster A.K.A. Nessie, who is said to be a large aquatic monster who inhabits Loch Ness.

There have been many “sightings” of the creature, but no concrete evidence of its existence.

Loch Ness is great for family holidays and romantic getaways as it’s got beautiful and somewhat dramatic scenery with nearby castles and lighthouses making it a great place for walks and wildlife.

2. Slains Castle, Cruden Bay

Slains Castle, Scotland

A 15-minute drive from Peterhead, Cruden Bay is definitely somewhere to put on your bucket list. Once you’re there you’ll find an absolutely gorgeous beach, beautiful views from cliffs, and it’s only a short walk to Slains Castle.

The best thing about Cruden Bay is that it’s 100% free and great for family/dog walks. Just don’t go up the cliffs when it’s windy because you will be an ice cube on your way down!

You can walk or take your car up to Slains Castle—I would definitely take the car on windy days. There are really great views when you’ve made it up there, and you can also walk around the castle ruins.

The original Slains Castle was built in 1597, but the ruins that are left are from the rebuild Francis Hay, 9th Earl Of Erroll, requested from architect John Smith in 1836.

3. Ullapool

Ullapool, Scotland

China’s Li River Valley: Better Than Heaven?

Ullapool, Scotland

This is a great place to visit if you’re in the highlands. It’s not got much to it, but what it does have is charm and the perfect mix of sea and mountains. There are a few shops and restaurants (a lot of them serve fish, as you could imagine as it’s mostly sea around the area) and there are regular boat rides to nearby—just as beautiful — places.

Not only is the drive up to Ullapool gorgeous as you’re in the mountains for a lot of the journey, but Ullapool itself is a very picturesque place. If you’re traveling there in September you should check out the music festival they hold, Loopallu. There was a meteorite that hit the area a looooong time ago, which is what gave it the unique shape…

Now, this is probably the most beautiful and magical of all the places on the list and it has such an interesting history which you should definitely read about.

The best part of Orkney has got to be Skara Brae, which is the remains of a village that has been preserved that dates back to before the pyramids. You can actually walk around it and see furniture that was made around 5,000 years ago.

Orkney, Scotland

Another great attraction in Orkney is The Ring Of Brodgar, which is a Neolithic henge and stone circle thought to have been erected between 2500BC and 2000BC, although this is still uncertain as the area has not been fully excavated. As most henges don’t have stone circles, this is quite an interesting place to visit.

5. Edinburgh

Edinburgh, Scotland

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Scotland, and for good reason, Edinburgh is an absolute must on your travels to Scotland. It’s got so much to do and has a real old world feel to it. This is one of the places you could spend the entirety of your holiday in and not get bored.

I’d recommend the walking tours that teach you all about the history of Edinburgh because there are A LOT of amazing stories that can be told about the city, and you’ll get to see places you wouldn’t have thought to visit. If you go up Arthur’s Seat or visit the castle you will get incredible views of the entire city.

6. falls of feugh.

A post shared by Hey, My Name is Mark (@markjdelaney) on Aug 4, 2018 at 1:42am PDT

A short walk from Banchory, The Falls Of Feugh is an absolute must. There is a bridge spanning across the river where you can watch salmon jumping upstream during the spawning season. In addition to this, there is also a fantastic little tearoom right beside the bridge which is always very accommodating.

There isn’t much to Falls of Feugh, but it is a rare sight to witness the salmon jumping upstream and occasionally you can even see a heron or two sitting in the water.

7. Collieston

A post shared by Darren Campbell (@darreneternal01) on Jul 26, 2018 at 2:32pm PDT

Although there isn’t much in Collieston, it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever stepped foot in. Situated between Cruden Bay and Newburgh, Collieston used to be a well-established fishing village, but ever since the 19th century has been too small to support new fishing technologies.

Although the main attraction of Collieston is the beach, which is something out of a fairytale, it also has caves and cliffs you can explore nearby. Another great place to spend the day, especially if you’re on a road trip around that area.

8. Strathyre

Strathyre, Scotland

This is a beautiful Victorian village near Loch Lomond which has gorgeous views of Loch Lubnaig. It’s surrounded by the Strathyre forest which is said to be home to the UK’s oldest tree, thought to be up to 5,000 years old.

Just a few miles from here you can find Balquhidder Church Yard where Scottish folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor was buried. This is a great place for a getaway as you can stay in log cabins that are situated on the Loch Lubnaig.

Are there are other magical places in Scotland you’d like to see added to this list? Comment below!

3. Glencoe Pass / Hagrids Hut

Harry Potter Magical Highlands Tour

Through the haunting pass of Glencoe which was used as the backdrop for several scenes from the third film onwards. This famous and dramatic volcanic glen features in several background shots from Prisoner of Azkaban , including the scene where Hermione punches Malfoy .

4. Fort William

Harry Potter Tour: Jacobite Train

Arriving to Fort William in time to board the Jacobite Steam Train for the greatest railway journey in the world, a great way to see some famous movie spots from the window – just at Harry and his friends did.

5. Glenfinnan Viaduct

Harry Potter Tour: Glenfinnan Viaduct

Of course the most exciting part of the journey for most will be crossing the magnificent 21-arched Victoria Glenfinnan Viaduct . One of the most iconic images in the films is that of the Jacobite Steam Train known to us all as the Hogwarts Express travelling over the Glenfinnan Viaduct on its way to the school. Remember to look out for flying cars.

Whilst enjoying views of Loch Shiel (first seen in the Chamber of Secrets ) from your window, yet another key location in the films and time permitting, the train may pause on the viaduct allowing you to take in the magnificent view and imagine yourself in the movie Prisoner of Azkaban as Harry encounters a Dementor for the very first time when the Hogwarts Express stops on the bridge.

6. Glenfinnan Station

Eilean na Moine / Dumbledore's Grave

The train will stop in Glenfinnan station with time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum located in the restored station building.

This gorgeous Loch near Glenfinnan was one of two lochs used as a stand-in for Hogwarts Lake in the Harry Potter films. It’s the place where Buckbeak dips a toe in the water in Prisoner of Azkaban . Harry and Hermione also look out across it from the Astronomy Tower in a particularly beautiful shot at the end of Half-Blood Prince . Also, Loch Shiel was transformed for some of the Triwizard Tournament scenes in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire .

7. Eilean na Moine / Dumbledore's Grave

Eilean na Moine / Dumbledore's Grave

The tiny island of Eilean na Moine was the island that held Dumbledore’s Grave and is framed by surrounding Loch Eilt used multiple times including the backdrop for the bridge into Hogwarts and for the location of Hagrid’s Hut .

Harry Potter Magical Highlands Tour

On arrival to the fishing village of Mallaig with its ferry route to the Isle of Skye (which you will get views of on a clear day) you will have a rest from location spotting, enjoy the village and some lunch . From here you will join your coach that will leave in time to stop at Glenfinnan Visitor Centre.

9. Glenfinnan Visitor Centre

We stop at Glenfinnan Visitor Centre where you can use this opportunity to take pictures of the Steam Train travelling back over the Viaduct (this option will involve some walking).

After the Glenfinnan stop you will return to Edinburgh via Loch Laggan .

Finding Unexpected Joy on an Organized Day Tour Across Scotland

By Vicki Denig

I’ll never forget staring into the deep, black waters of Loch Ness. The darkness of the lake beautifully highlighted the fat, white snowflakes falling from puffy, gray skies above. This, I remember thinking, was the untouched natural beauty of Scotland that so many of my travel writer friends had raved about. It was one of the most breathtaking winter scenes I’d experienced in my life—and I would never have found myself there if it weren’t for an organized day tour.

This past winter, in lieu of exchanging Christmas gifts, my partner and I decided to venture over to Scotland for a four-day weekend. The whisky-soaked mecca of Islay has long been a bucket-list destination for me, a writer focusing on wine and spirits—but venturing all the way to the remote island would have taken up too much of our long January weekend. To get our fill of belly-warming whisky in a string of cozy pubs and hotel bars, stopping in Edinburgh was a no-brainer. While I was also charmed by the idea of Glasgow’s edginess and its abundance of accessible distilleries, I still yearned for a way to see the more rural parts of Scotland in our short time there.

The Scottish capital artfully balances the very old with the new and exciting.

Beyond the main monuments and city-based distilleries suggested, my internet searches left us with dozens of day tour recommendations through the Scottish Highlands . In my mind, organized day tours were bound to be filled with the kind of tourist traps I’d avoided most of my adult life, not to mention plenty of the selfie-stick wielding travelers I dreaded. I almost turned the other way, but the idea of dramatic, mountainous terrain only surpassed by rolling green hills studded with medieval castles and plenty of long-haired cows made me willing to take the chance.

“What do you think of an 11-hour tour through the Scottish Highlands?” I asked my partner in the living room of my Manhattan apartment. “Sounds incredible,” he responded. I began to mentally weigh the cons: potentially corny stops, a voluble guide—or worse still, strange travel companions. But there were also solid pros: Fitting in the natural beauty we would otherwise miss, without having to organize, plan, or think about anything along the way.

As a Type A traveler, I was already overplanning Edinburgh, exhausting myself over how many of the 19 industry-approved cocktail bars we’d be able to fit into 48 hours. The idea of enjoying a stress-free day of sightseeing without having to plan a thing? Very appealing. The cherry on the top was the £57 per person pirice tag. With a click of a button and for the price of a few drinks, we were booked to hit Glencoe, Loch Ness, and the Highlands—all in a single day.

Canoeing through the beautiful Caledonian Canal near Fort William

Less than 24 hours after arriving in Glasgow, we awoke at an ungodly hour to head over to the central bus station and start the day. We trudged through dark, dead-empty streets to eventually be greeted by a cheery—but not overly peppy, I noted—guide, and five other travelers. The white sprinter van had the company’s name, Rabbie’s, sprawled across the side in blue lettering. We climbed in along with a couple in their 40s, their two teenage daughters, and an Australian woman traveling solo .

“Looks like there’s just seven of us today!” the guide exclaimed. My partner and I seized the opportunity to take over two full rows in the back, leaving the family to occupy the center of the van and the solo traveler to hold down the fort in front with the guide, who doubled as our driver. Our fearless leader started the van and gave us all some time to settle in, turning on some music instead. The day was off to a good start.

Our route took us from the vast wilderness of Rannoch Moor to the breathtaking landscapes of Gelncoe , followed by the massive fault line of Great Glen. The van weaved through the mountainous Highlands, glassy lakes, and frosty hillsides. As I leaned against the window, I took in the sight of snow-dusted hills, many of which had turned from their summery emerald green to a rusty orange. The sun tried its best to peek through, although the weather remained a signature gray.

After spending the morning traversing through hillsides, we made it to the quaint town of Fort Augustus, home to just 650 people (as well as beautiful boat-bobbing views along the Caledonian Canal). Our group disembarked and hopped on an hour-long boat cruise on Loch Ness. At this point, we were just over halfway through the day—and more than 140 miles from Glasgow. From gazing upon the famed Three Sisters of Glencoe to snaking our way back home through the Grampian Mountains, our knowledge of Scotland’s geography and history was growing with each stop.

For me, the best part of the Highlands day tour was simply the act of slowing down from our packed city itinerary and surrendering to the natural beauty around us—something not nearly as achievable, if even possible, in the bustle of Edinburgh and Glasgow. The simple act of looking out a window and letting go offered tranquility I hadn’t experienced in longer than I could remember.

I also genuinely appreciated all the down time provided by our tour guide. This offered mental reprieve from all of the new information we were learning—but also enabled the socializing. We were given solo opportunities to explore most of the destinations at our own pace. For my partner and I, this meant eating fish and chips for lunch at a traditional pub, as well as tasting some local whiskies at a cozy hotel bar by ourselves.

By the end of the tour, we’d traversed well over 250 miles through the heart of Scotland. I thought about my initial hesitation about giving into such the activity; my preconceived notions of day tours had been proven completely wrong. In fact, it's quite cool to place your trust in the hands of a knowledgeable guide, and pretty adventurous to surrender to a group of strangers—embarking on a journey into the unknown together. Sure, some of the stops were a bit kitschy, and a few selfie sticks will almost certainly always be present on group trips these days, but the long-lasting memories of journeying into the vastness of a place offer far bigger payoff.

In addition to the unforgettable views we saw, the relief of not agonizing over every last planning detail was a vacation in itself. It was official: I was unexpectedly converted by the merits of an organized day tour.

The following day, we left Glasgow behind and set off to Edinburgh—and the first thing we booked was a Big Bus tour. I boarded it excited and expectant, with eyes wide open and my curious, exploratory spirit intact.

Neil Young reunites with Crazy Horse after a decade, performs double encore

magical tours schotland

On Thursday night, magic happened in Tennesseee.

Singer-songwriter Neil Young and rock band Crazy Horse came together to perform their hits over a two-hour show at FirstBank Amphitheater on their first tour together in a decade.

The 2024 "Love Earth Tour" features the now 78-year-old singer alongside the Los Angeles rock band yet again.

Canadian singer-songwriter Young, best known for songs "Heart of Gold," "Harvest Moon" and "Old Man," released the album "Fu##in' Up" with Crazy Horse on April 25, featuring nine rock 'n' roll tracks. The two have released 15 studio albums together.

Young and Crazy Horse kicked off their brief 16-stop tour on April 24 in San Diego and will continue with upcoming stops in Virginia, New Jersey, New York and more.

Thursday's concert in Franklin was originally slated for Wednesday evening, but was postponed by a day due to  inclement weather .

But Thursday night brought the calm after the storm; the evening was serene.

Neil Young returns to Spotify after 2-year hiatus following Joe Rogan controversy

After opener Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping , a musical performance art experience that draws from religion, Young hit the stage.

The set-up featured a backdrop with a galloping horse and giant speaker cabinets and road cases, the same ones Young took on the road with him for his "Rust Never Sleeps" tour in 1978.

Young appeared in a striped cap, a denim work shirt that featured paint splatters and a Spartan Truck Equipment patch, black pants, black shoes and of course, his guitar, Old Black .

He mentioned the venue's beauty multiple times — a stage nestled in the woods of Graystone Quarry in Thompson’s Station.

"How you doin out there? Nice to see you," Young said to the Franklin crowd.

"What a beautiful place. You guys are very lucky to have this place."

Alongside Young was the band, comprised of 80-year-old Billy Talbot on bass and 80-year-old Ralph Molina on drums. They also have a new member, Micah Nelson on guitar.

Nelson, Willie Nelson 's 33-year-old son, took over for the band's previous guitarist Nils Lofgren earlier this year.

Throughout the show, Neil Young and the band played a 17-song set, full with jam sessions and occasional harmonies. Young was energized and playful, captivating the crowd with his trademark nasally, emotional voice.

The set list was mostly comprised of older hits, like 1969's "Cinnamon Girl" and 1972's "Heart of Gold."

The band didn't play any songs from their recent album; the most recent song was 1996's "Scattered (Let's Think About Livin')." Nelson's big moment came during the tune; he traded his guitar to play a swinging keyboard that descended from the ceiling.

Young's guitar playing—both electric and acoustic—was adept and agile. Though Young shared in January he has been playing guitar with arthritis in his hand for years, audience members wouldn't have guessed.

He played the blues on song "Vampire Blues," hitting guitar licks with a precision like Stevie Ray Vaughan's. He also performed drawn-out, warping guitar solos on songs like "Like a Hurricane" and "Powderfinger."

Between songs, Young would hand his guitar off to his techs (who all wore white lab coats), but was audibly uncomfortable until he had a guitar in his arms yet again.

The night's concert walked the line between a Young that leaned into classic, grunge rock 'n' roll with Crazy Horse and a Young that gently cooed with Crosby, Stills & Nash in '69, strumming an acoustic.

Young pulled off the balancing act.

Here are some of the top moments from the night.

Neil Young opens with 'Cortez the Killer,' sings newly released verse

On a purple-lit stage, Neil Young and Crazy Horse kicked off the show with the 1975 song "Cortez the Killer."

The first lyrics from Young brought cheers from the audience as he sang, "He came dancing across the water / With his galleons and guns."

Young surprised fans at the first concert of the tour by singing unreleased lyrics to the song, ones he said did not record due to a power outage on the recording console in 1975.

Young found the lyric manuscript, he said in an interview mid-April this year.

The verse was lost for nearly 50 years. Young sang the verse again in Franklin.

“I floated on the water / I ate that ocean wave / Two weeks after the slaughter/ I was living in a cave / They came too late to get me / But there’s no one here to set me free / From this rocky grave / To that snowed-out ocean wave.”

Neil Young calls on local non-profits to support his eco-friendly mission

Neil Young has been vocal about his environmental efforts throughout his career .

In 1985, Young helped establish the annual Farm Aid concerts . In 2022, he released album "World Record," an album that focuses on climate change. Later that year, Young said he refused to play venues that are supported by factory farms .

The environmentalism was felt at his Franklin show.

Upon entering the concert, fans saw a series of tents and tables from local environmental organizations all hand picked by Young, including Tennessee Local Food . The organizations attended the concert and chatted with fans about their missions.

Young calls it the "LOVE EARTH Village."

At different stops on the tour, hundreds of non-profits working for sustainability and social equity will join to chat about issues like organic farming, wildlife protection, Native American rights and climate change solutions.

According to a venue employee, Young also changed the menu for the venue's offerings on Thursday, opting for more eco-friendly options (Coke products were nowhere to be seen).

On a handout at the venue, Young wrote, "Support your friends, support your land, and support the people that want to care for the land.

"The revolution starts with us. The revolution starts with you."

Neil Young goes acoustic mid-show, takes stage alone

At one point, Young took an empty stage, traded Old Black for an acoustic, and donned the harmonica around his neck.

He sang songs, "Comes a Time," "Heart of Gold" and "Human Highway" onstage alone, leaning into his folk singer-songwriter roots.

Despite the occasional hoot or holler in the audience, a hush crept over the amphitheater as Young sang, played plucky guitar and showcased his harmonica skills between verses.

It was a gentler, softer and more intimate side to the evening.

"Heart of Gold" stood out among the acoustic section.

Young sang his biggest hit: "Keep me searching / For a heart of gold / I've been a miner / For a heart of gold."

An encore and...another encore

Before the encore, Young ended his set with song "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)," leaving the audience with the classic and singing, "Hey hey, my my / Rock and roll can never die."

And it didn't die just then, Young and the band returned to the stage to play "Roll Another Number (For the Road)" as their encore.

After the song finished, the audience didn't stop cheering. Young and company came back to deliver a second encore, this time three songs long.

For encore two, they performed "Danger Bird," "Don't Cry No Tears" and "Sedan Delivery," ending the night on a grungy rock 'n' roll note that included pink lights and plenty of reverb.

Afterwards, the band and Young gathered arm-in-arm in a single spotlight and gave their final bow.

An old-school white-and-blue Renault 4L car which is small in size, parked in a main square in Paris.

Paris is going electric — for a new perspective on the city, take a low-carbon car tour

With its sights set on banning fossil fuel cars by 2030, Paris is embracing electric vehicles — and you can take one for a spin around the capital’s landmarks.

Vintage cars, with vintage engines, typically have a lot to say: they grumble around corners, groan up hills and continue to mutter to themselves even when they’ve come to a stop. But this one isn’t like the others. The white-and-blue Renault 4L, which rolled off the factory floor in 1955, should be as talkative as the rest of her kind. Yet, all I can hear as we stop at a red light between the honey-coloured apartments of the 8th arrondissement are wafts of French radio, blowing in through the sunroof on the breeze.

From the back seat, it’s hard to tell exactly where it’s coming from — beyond one of the cast iron balconies on either side, perhaps, or the next car over, where a blonde woman is cradling a miniature poodle on her lap.The light turns green, and the little Renault sparks into life. The engine sounds like a spaceship powering up— there’s an electrical whirring that grows increasingly high pitched. And then we’re away, speeding over the cobbles.   “She’s surprisingly powerful,” driver Renaud Garza calls back with a chuckle from beneath his navy chauffeur’s cap. “With the battery, I can drive at around 75mph.”

Increasingly, the streets of Paris are going electric. Like our Renault 4L, battery-powered cars have become a more popular sight over the last decade — together with a burgeoning herd of e-buses, bikes and even unicycles. It’s all part of the city’s plans to outlaw all but electric vehicles by 2030 in preparation for becoming carbon neutral by 2050. Officials have run incentives to boost the use of e-vehicles over recent years, such as the €100 (£85) per month leasing scheme that had to be phased out early due to the vigorous uptake. Infrastructure is being upgraded, too, with charging points appearing around Paris at increasingly regular intervals and a trial electrified motorway, which can charge cars as they drive, under construction nearby.

Renaud typically drives a fleet of petrol Citroën 2CVs between Paris’s blockbuster sights for his tour company 4 Roues Sous 1 Parapluie. But over the past few years, they have added an electric version alongside the Renault 4L. Both have retrofitted, specially designed batteries.

A far shot of the streets of Paris, with the Eiffel Tower seen in the background.

“Get ready — I’m about to drive in the most dangerous place in Paris,” Renaud calls from the front seat as we approach the Arc de Triomphe, the sound of sirens growing steadily louder as the traffic thickens. Here, 12 major roads, including the Champs-Élysées, converge into a vast, eight-lane roundabout with the alabaster arch at its heart, vehicles endlessly circling like planets around the sun.As we’re pulled into orbit, the little Renault judders across the cobblestones, rattling on a circuitous trajectory past uniformed gendarmes posing for photos and the arch’s intricate friezes. “The French invented the roundabout,” says Renaud with a proud nod. The Etoile, as this one is known, is the proud maman of them all.

We turn right down a shaded thoroughfare lined with plane trees, past cafes heaving with suited workers lunching beneath gold parasols, and bump across a bridge over the Seine to see our next stop piercing the sky. “The Eiffel Tower was built as the centrepiece for the 1889 World’s Fair,” Renaud explains as we draw closer to one of its broad, latticed feet. “Parisians didn’t like it at the time — they’d just finished their city with all of this nice stone and then this popped up. It was ugly, too industrial. But it was useful as a radio tower, so they kept it.” Soon, we’re close enough to see its ornate ironwork and the mechanics of the lift, the cogs slowly rotating. The garden around it is closed, in the process of being preened in preparation for its starring role in the Olympics’ opening ceremony — athletes will travel on boats for six miles down the Seine before coming to a stop here. It’s been 100 years since Paris last hosted the Olympics in 1924, and the tower is being repainted gold — closer to the colour Gustave Eiffel originally chose — to mark the occasion.
