23-year-old independent singer, songwriter, and producer Lauv resembles an auteur in his assemblage of electronic tones, airy beats, jazz-inspired guitars, and soulful vocalizations. After logging countless hours in his bedroom writing and producing, Lauv entered the prestigious Music Technology Program at NYU in 2012. Under the auspices that he’d “make music for other artists,” he passionately maintained a prolific output until penning “The Other” during 2014. “The Other” quietly took the internet by storm. Premiered on a friend’s blog as his first release under the name Lauv, the song virally lit up HypeMachine and eventually generated 100 million-plus Spotify streams.

Relocating to Los Angeles and signing a publishing deal with Prescription Songs, he co-wrote the gold-certified Top 5 smash “No Promises” by Cheat Codes and Demi Lovato as well as the Pitchfork-endorsed “Boys” for Charli XCX, among others. In the meantime, “I Like Me Better” became his second bona fide smash. It vaulted past the 200 million mark on Spotify, soaring to the Top 30 of the Global Chart and Top 5 on iTunes internationally. A mélange of plucky synth chords and a 90s-inspired drum break, the electrifying production snaps into a soulfully staccato refrain. “I Like Me better” comprises just one phase of Lauv’s debut playlist, I met you when I was 18. Collating all of his music and the 2017 single “Easy Love,” the project brings everything full circle as he confidently steps into new territory.

Live reviews

My friends and I have been obsessed with Lauv's stuff since January of this year with his EP and dang, he definitely impressed us live. I love his stage presence; I mean he even danced in the audience with us with one of his unreleased tracks!! You can tell he is really jamming and giving it his all, and you can hear it in his voice. Singing "Breathe" gave people goosebumps and as he dropped to his knees you could just feel the passion. He was also very kind and friendly when we chatted with him after and we got free stickers that will go directly on all of our hydroflasks hahahah excited for the next singles to come out and of course his debut album coming in 2017. Thanks for rocking our socks off!

Watched Lauv perform in Tokyo and was impressed by how high his vocal cords could go!

Not only does Lauv sing well, he also treats his audience well. Some of the fans at the back started pushing to the front, causing the fans at the front to be uncomfortable. Lauv noticed that and asked the fans to take a step back so that everyone's comfortable.

Noticing that the fans at the back were uable to enjoy the live performance of Lauv as the fans at the front, Lauv discreetly went to the back of the crowd and sang an entire song from that spot.

A genuinely nice person with amazing talent!

oh god this was such a wonderful little show. jeremy zucker opened it and he was adorable and so friendly and his voice was god damn amazing. lauv's entry was magical and the way he went about the songs was amazing. i really adored this show and i'm so glad i got to be part of it since it was both of their first shows in london. lauv is so worth it, the music is brilliant and his voice was even better live. massive thanks to him, his team and zucker for such a lively show!!

The show was spectacular! I loved every single minute of it. Lauv mentioned in the concert it was his first actual performance in an arena of that scale. It was flattering to know that I was able to witness his first big concert in Manila. His setlist was undeniably awesome and he did not leave a single minute boring. The concert was all in all a fantastic night and we all wanted more!

In the music video for his latest single “All For Nothing (I’m So In Love),” pop singer and songwriter Lauv washes ashore on a sandy beach, drenched and ready to surrender to love and life. The record serves as the title track to the singer’s forthcoming sophomore album All 4 Nothing , due out in August.

In a statement, Lauv described “All 4 Nothing (I’m So In Love)” as being “a song about loving someone so much at a time in your life when you’re still in the process of learning how to love yourself and being scared how your own personal insecurities could ruin a love that is and could be so genuine and transformative. In essence, it’s a song about surrendering to love and life.”

Lauv - All 4 Nothing (I'm So In Love) [Official Video]

Lauv stars in the Hannah Lux Davis-directed “All 4 Nothing (I’m So In Love)” music video alongside Sophie Cates, delivering a striking and emotive performance at the mercy of the ocean waves. Giving physical form to the giddy feeling of falling in love, he sings: “I’m so in love, I’m so in love / I don’t ever wanna stop this ride that we’re on / I don’t ever wanna say goodbye / Cause then all of those nights / They would just be all for nothing.”

“Shooting the video with Hannah Lux Davis was an amazing, eye opening experience which has not only pushed the boundaries of how I see myself as an artist but also as a clear example of the true artist that Hannah herself is and her ability to bring those things out in the artists she works with,” Lauv shared. “It surpassed every dream I could’ve had for shooting a video for this song.”

The single and music video arrived alongside the All 4 Nothing album announcement as well as a slate of headlining NorAmerican tour dates scheduled for August through September 2022. The tour will begin on August 11 at The Amory in Minneapolis, Minnesota and span through September 20 where it concludes with show at Seattle, Washington’s WAMU Theater. Earlier this month Lauv released his sophomore studio album, All 4 Nothing , via Virgin Music. It was preceded by four singles, “26,” “All 4 Nothing,” “Kids Are Born Stars,” and “Strangers.” All four songs have made it into the set for his tour promoting the new record. The tour was in New England last week and on top of promoting his latest album, Lauv was also playing songs from his debut record, which came out in March of 2020 and never got the full supporting tour it deserved. Along with Lauv on this tour are pop singer Hayley Kiyoko and lo-fi guitarist Aidan Bissett. We were on hand at the Boston show, check out some photos below.

Lauv Brings “How I Feel” Tour to Boston

On October 7, Lauv descended on the House of Blues in Boston for two nights on his “How I Feel” tour. The “fuck, i’m lonely” singer attracted an audience as varied as his musical style; which ranged from dance to acoustic, but by far the biggest draw to the sold-out show was it’s welcoming vibe.

When fans entered the venue, they were greeted by My Blue Thoughts booths, a collaboration with Microsoft. The blue lit cubes housed computers where fans could anonymously share their thoughts and view other’s thoughts shared across the world in an effort to make everyone feel less alone.

That warmth continued into Lauv’s performance with Pride colored lights and merch that read “Welcome To The Land of Friends.”

The 21 song setlist included tracks from his EPs I met you when I was 18. , a musical tribute to the first girl he ever loved and ~how i’m feeling~ , his new EP and the title of his tour. His discography revealed stories of love, loneliness, and heartbreak.

Lauv’s set was vulnerable and it was clear that the crowd appreciated and related to that. Before he performed, “The Sad Song,” he played an audio track where he explained the time when he was at his lowest, “I wrote this song right before I gave up,” he told the crowd. The fans listened intently and Lauv noticed and acknowledged it. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you for listening.”

lauv tour boston

Lauv made the audience as much a part of his set as he was. He often turned the mic on them encouraging the fans to sing, he threw out all his guitar pics to the crowd, and had the fans waving their cell phone flashlights in unison on multiple occasions. Some audience members got so into the show that they started swing dancing.

Before singing his song “Superhero,” Lauv took a moment to explain its creation and the evolution of My Blue Thoughts. He told the crowd about the days when My Blue Thoughts was just a blue lit box filled with anonymous thoughts on paper. It’s intent being to make the world a little smaller by finding people to relate to through common thoughts and experiences. Lauv found one of the anonymous notes so relatable that he turned it into, “Superhero.”. It read, “I met a superhero. I lost her. I want her back.”

Lauv closed his set with his hit, “I Like Me Better.”

The night was truly a celebration of Lauv’s music and more importantly his fans.

Lauv Releases Sophomore Album 'All 4 Nothing'

Lauv will also be performing “Kids Are Born Stars” on Good Morning America Monday, August 8th.

pixeltracker

Multi-Platinum and chart-topping singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Lauv releases his sophomore album All 4 Nothing, available everywhere now via Virgin Music Label and Artist Services. Along with the album, his new video for "Stranger", directed by Hannah Lux Davis, is out now.

The album was executive produced by Lauv and John Cunningham and features 13 of the artist's most personal tracks to date. Last night, Lauv celebrated the launch with an iHeartRadio Album Release Party broadcast across iHeartMedia stations. Lauv will also be performing "Kids Are Born Stars" on Good Morning America Monday, August 8th.

On his album, All 4 Nothing, he expands his signature sound like never before. Lauv found himself letting go of control to shift his focus to storytelling.

He says, "When I started this album, I was going through a big existential crisis, questioning everything I had and why I had it. For a long time, I thought my identity was being in-control of the creative process. But my identity is just me, and I let myself go free. My album 'All 4 Nothing' curates an energy of openness, wonder, and excitement, but also vulnerability and realness. I hope it opens up a vortex to something you haven't felt in a while-a place where you can build yourself up from."

Lauv's approach to songwriting shifted as well, with him sharing, "I experimented with my approach. Rather than write a song and record it, I would get up on the mic and start freestyling my lyrics. Approaching the creative process that way gave me no time to think about what I was doing or saying-I was just singing what I was feeling in real time, and the lyrics on this album feel more raw and unfiltered because of that."

Singles "Kids Are Born Stars," "All 4 Nothing (I'm So In Love)," and "26" received praise from outlets such as Rolling Stone, UPROXX, MTV, and V Magazine with Billboard calling him "one of pop's premier songwriters." After amassing 11 billion streams, this new chapter of Lauv is sonically the most challenging and exciting yet.

Lauv's North American headline tour will kick off August 11th, with stops in New York City at Hammerstein Ballroom, Nashville at Ryman Auditorium, and Los Angeles at The Greek Theatre. Hayley Kiyoko will open on all dates. To purchase tickets, please visit here .

A fans’ guide to Boston Calling: Performance times, food lineup, and everything you need to know

Memorial Day weekend is almost here, which can only mean one thing — it’s time for another edition of Boston Calling . Since 2013, the annual festivities have become a fan-favorite event for music lovers across the city and beyond, featuring lineups of local and international talent, plus plenty of food and drink options to keep festival-goers fueled up. If you’re planning to check out this year’s three-day fest, prepare with our fan’s guide to everything you need to know about Boston Calling 2024.

What’s new this year?

Aside from a fresh lineup of stars and a slew of food vendors making their Boston Calling debut (more on both in the sections below), there isn’t a ton of new stuff at this year’s festival. Fans can expect the return of the Ferris wheel, four stages of performers, and the usual dedicated spots for food, drinks, restrooms, and more. New this year for platinum ticket holders, however, is a special front-row viewing area added within the VIP section of the Green Stage, offering even closer views of the performances.

Who’s performing each day of the festival?

There are four performance areas at Boston Calling, with the Orange Stage serving as a showcase of local talent. Highlights from day one include Boston’s own Divine Sweater, who kick things off at 1:45 p.m. Friday on the Red Stage. Later in the day, “I Hate Boston” singer and “Mean Girls” star Reneé Rapp takes over the Green Stage at 5:55 p.m., followed by local rapper kei on the Orange Stage at 7 p.m., singer-songwriter Leon Bridges on the Red Stage at 7:05 p.m., and rockers Young the Giant on the Blue Stage at 7:40 p.m. Friday’s headliner is English crooner Ed Sheeran, who performs on the Green Stage at 8:40 p.m.

Day two of Boston Calling commences with Lowell artist Brittany Tsewole’s Senseless Optimism at 1:45 p.m. on the Red Stage. Meanwhile, Boston band Bad Rabbits, who opened the first Boston Calling back in 2013, make their grand return to the festival with a performance on the Red Stage at 3 p.m.

Other highlights from Saturday include Roxbury rapper Cakeswagg on the Orange Stage at 4:05 p.m., English singer-songwriter Frank Turner and his band the Sleeping Souls on the Red Stage at 4:55 p.m., followed by Phish frontman Trey Anastasio and his band Classic TAB on the Red Stage at 7:15 p.m. Country fans are in for a treat on Saturday night, as Grammy-nominated “Whitehouse Road” singer Tyler Childers headlines day two with a performance on the Green Stage at 9 p.m.

Boston Calling 2024 wraps up on Sunday with a slew of performances. Indie alt-rocker Stefan Thev kicks things off at 1:40 pm. on the Red Stage. Later in the afternoon, pop sensation Chappell Roan takes over the Green Stage at 4:05 p.m.

Additional highlights from day three include rockers the Revivalists on the Red Stage at 5:15 p.m., rapper Megan Thee Stallion on the Green Stage at 6:25 p.m., and Irish singer Hozier on the Red Stage at 7:35 p.m. This year’s fest ends with a performance by rock band the Killers, who headline the Green Stage on Sunday with a performance at 9:10 p.m.

Can I still get tickets?

Yes! Tickets to Boston Calling 2024 are still available at bostoncalling.com/tickets . One-day general admission tickets are $196, while three-day general admission passes are $392. Single day and three-day GA+, VIP, and platinum tickets are also available. Attendees who already purchased their tickets in advance should have received their wristbands in the mail. Guests who didn’t receive one in the mail can also head to the box office onsite to pick up replacement wristbands.

What’s available to eat and drink?

The food and drink lineup at Boston Calling will feature a few newcomers, plus plenty of familiar returning vendors. Stillwater chef and “Chopped” champion Sarah Wade brings a mac and cheese feast to the fest with The MacBar. Fellow festival newbie Ricen will have an offering of Thai dishes on hand, while Shaking Crab will have Cajun- and New England-inspired seafood fare. All three vendors will be available at the DoorDash Food Village, which also includes bites by Blackbird Doughnuts and Sally’s Sandwiches, Dumpling Daughter, El Jefe’s Taqueria, Flour, and Lily P’s Fried Chicken.

Additional returning vendors that can be found in the festival’s main field area include Chicken & Rice Guys, Jaju Pierogi, Naco Taco, Roxy’s Grilled Cheese, The Smoke Shop BBQ, Tasty Burger, and more. For guests looking for vegetarian and vegan options, try a bite at spots like The Chubby Chickpea, Zinneken’s, Love Art Sushi, Moyzilla, Ricebur, Flatbread Company, and FoMu.

As for adult beverages, guests 21 and over can enjoy libations from Samuel Adams, Miller Lite, Heineken, Truly, Josh Cellars, and more. GA+, VIP, and platinum ticket holders will also have access to exclusive bar areas with a special lineup of craft cocktails.

Boston Calling platinum ticket holders will also receive gourmet food experiences each day of the festival, kicking off on Friday with bites by James Beard Award-winning chef Ken Oringer of Uni, Toro, Coppa, and most recently, Faccia a Faccia. On Saturday, Will Gilson of Puritan & Co. takes the helm, while Sunday features bites by Joanne Chang, the James Beard Award-winning chef behind Myers + Chang and Flour.

From left: Chloe Patch, Kaitlyn Sass, Kaleigh Wandell, and Delaney Diaz sport cowgirl hats while attending Boston Calling in 2023.

What can I bring? What should I leave at home?

The festival has a full bag policy, meaning all bags will be searched before entry. Fans are allowed to bring small clutch purses and fanny packs that are 6 X 9 inches or smaller, don’t have to be transparent, and can have more than one pocket. However, all other bags that are larger than 6 X 9 inches must not exceed 12 X 6 X 12 inches and must be transparent.

Attendees are also allowed to bring hydration packs that don’t need to be clear, but cannot have more than two total pockets, plus must be emptied of all liquids prior to entry. Reusable bottles are permitted as well, but must be emptied before entering the festival. Water stations will be available onsite to refill bottles and hydration packs.

Additionally, guests are allowed to bring personal-sized hand sanitizer, non-aerosol containers of sunscreen that are 3.4 ounces or less, and cameras, although detachable lenses and accessories like tripods, GoPro mounts, selfie sticks, and similar items won’t be allowed.

For guests who need to bring their prescription medication with them to the festival, they must show the medical staff at the entrance gates the pharmacy-labeled container that includes the patient name, dosage, and other information. Visitors will only be allowed to bring with them enough of the prescribed medication for that day only. Over-the-counter medication must be checked out by the medical staff at the entrances as well.

Additional prohibited items at Boston Calling include coolers; weapons, fireworks, and explosives of any kind; professional video, camera, and audio recording equipment; drones; hammocks; baby strollers; Frisbees; chairs; binoculars; blankets, sheets, and towels; inflatables; umbrellas; spiked jewelry and large chains; glass containers; carts; tents or any shaded structures; and illegal or illicit substances.

Outside food and beverages are also prohibited, as are pets (except for service animals), plus personal transportation items like skateboards, scooters, and bicycles. Free bicycle parking will be available near the entrance.

Boston Calling is also a completely cashless festival, so leave the Benjamins at home. Guests are encouraged to register their wristbands online to sync a payment method, enabling them to pay with just a tap of the wrist. Lockers with charging stations will be available to rent out as well throughout the weekend.

How do I get there?

Another belonging you should leave at home: your car. There will be no parking available onsite or on the street in the surrounding area (expect strict ticketing and towing of vehicles that weekend).

Instead, attendees are encouraged to walk or take the T, with the Red Line station at Harvard Square located just a short walk from the festival’s main entrance at 65 N. Harvard St. at the Harvard Athletic Complex in Allston. Festival-goers can also take the bus, with both the 66 and 86 routes stopping at Harvard Stadium. Commuter rail riders can take the Worcester line to the Boston Landing Station, located a little more than a mile from the venue.

Fans opting to use a rideshare app can get dropped off near the main entrance at Harvard Stadium, with gates opening at 1 p.m. each day. However, at the end of each night, attendees using a rideshare app to get home should follow signs to the designated rideshare pickup lot.

A child gets a better view of the Dropkick Murphys at Boston Calling in 2023.

Can I bring my kids?

Music lovers of all ages are welcome at Boston Calling, and children under 10 can even attend for free without a wristband. When you and the little ones are tuckered out from dancing, relax with a ride on the Ferris wheel located near the Blue Stage for epic views of the festival. Proceeds from the Ferris wheel rides will also go to benefit Music Drives Us, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting school music programs.

What’s the weather going to be like?

Boston is due for a bit of summer-like heat this week according to the Globe’s Dave Epstein, before a cold front moves in bringing “a few showers and even the rumble of thunder.” Luckily, it sounds like “it should be a fairly nice weekend” as the festival kicks off, with temperatures expected to “be more typical for this time of year.” We’ll keep you updated on the weekend’s weather as new forecasts come in.

What freebies and giveaways should I look out for?

It’s always great to score free swag or other freebies at festivals, and there’ll be plenty to check out at Boston Calling this year. Head to the House of Dunkin’ for free iced coffee, munchkins, plus additional activities and giveaways. Meanwhile, fans who have the Jersey Mike’s app on their phone can enter the Sub Above Club area, featuring free subs and a performance by a surprise guest.

Attendees who are 21 and older can check out the Miller Lite area at the festival’s Bar 75, featuring complimentary WiFi and charging stations, plus games like cornhole, pop-a-shot, and more. Additionally, the canned water company Liquid Death has a club set up where guests are invited to try a complimentary beverage, get airbrushed tattoos, and have their horoscopes read.

Fans cheer for a performance by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard in 2023.

Are there any after parties?

On Friday night, Frank Turner & the Sleeping Souls will play an after party show at Big Night Live beginning at 10 p.m.

Who was Toussaint L’Ouverture, the namesake behind Boston’s new Haitian cultural center?

The Toussaint L’Ouverture Cultural Center of Massachusetts, is set to celebrate its groundbreaking near TD Garden in Boston on May 20. It will act as a gathering place and resource center for local Haitians. And organizers hope it will also help the legacy of one of history’s great leaders live on. GBH’s Esteban Bustillos has the story.

 • By Esteban Bustillos

Toussaint L’Ouverture was one of the main leaders of the Haitian Revolution. The new Toussaint L’Ouverture Cultural Center of Massachusetts, set to celebrate its groundbreaking near TD Garden on the May 20, will act as a gathering place and resource for local Haitians.

The Old State House in downtown Boston is a monument to revolution, hidden in plain sight.

Commuters, tourists and street vendors hustle past the 18th-century former Massachusetts capitol, the site of the Boston Massacre and Boston’s first reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Sitting just across the street from it on a recent Tuesday afternoon, Charlot Lucien, founder of the Haitian Artists Assembly of Massachusetts, had the author of a different revolution on his mind.

Toussaint L’Ouverture was one of the major leaders of the Haitian Revolution. Lucien compares him to two American greats: Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

“Of course, I could have named a few abolitionists as well, but the weight of the historical mission that Lincoln had to take on his shoulders, to me, is comparable to what Toussaint L’Ouverture had to deal with,” he said.

The Toussaint L’Ouverture Cultural Center of Massachusetts, set to celebrate its groundbreaking near TD Garden on May 20, will act as a gathering place and resource for local Haitians. And organizers hope it will also help the legacy of one of history’s great leaders live on.

L’Ouverture is believed to have been born enslaved in the former French colony of Saint-Domingue, which would become Haiti upon its independence. He was a military leader and statesman who made key contributions to abolition. The constitution of 1801, which was written under L’Ouverture’s guidance, banned slavery.

His leadership helped the former French colony chart a path to independence and paved the way for the world’s only successful revolt by enslaved people.

Régine Michelle Jean-Charles, the director of Africana Studies at Northeastern University, compares L’Ouverture to another revered American.

“Just thinking about the impact and the reverence and the extent to which he is seen as really a freedom fighter, I think that that is very appropriate to compare him to Harriet Tubman.” Régine Michelle Jean-Charles, director of Africana Studies at Northeastern University

“Just thinking about the impact and the reverence and the extent to which he is seen as really a freedom fighter, I think that that is very appropriate to compare him to Harriet Tubman,” she said.

Like many of history’s most famous figures, L’Ouverture has been made into a larger-than-life figure. But Jean-Charles stresses that L’Ouverture didn’t view himself as solely responsible for freeing Haiti.

“We’re very much about the collective, the collaborative, the understanding that ‘L’Union fait la Force,’ as it says on the Haitian flag, which is, ‘There’s strength in unity,’” she said. “So, his recognition of the collective, I think, is something that we can also learn from and, to me, also links him to contemporary abolition struggles.”

L’Ouverture’s legacy across Boston

When the Toussaint L’Ouverture Cultural Center, or TLCC opens, it will serve as a hub for the local Haitian community and beyond.

The facility, which has been a long time in the making, will act as a conference center, hosting meetings, lectures and workshops. Its library will house Haitian literature, among other works. It will also serve as a space for hosting functions ranging from festivals to weddings.

But L’Ouverture’s modern legacy in Boston isn’t limited to the new cultural center.

In 2017, Boston Public Schools opened The Toussaint L’Ouverture Academy, the first two-way immersion Haitian Creole dual-language preschool program in the country. He even got a shout-out in the 2022 film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” as T’Challa’s son’s namesake .

Nancy Accime, a member of the TLCC’s executive committee, believes the center will directly contribute to L’Ouverture’s mission.

“This provides the opportunity to really highlight … what he stood for. The ideals,” Accime said. “Which I think is in alignment with most people in terms of making sure that you have liberty, making sure that you have these freedoms.”

Although L’Overture was one of the architects of the Caribbean nation, he never actually saw a free Haiti. The French captured him in 1802, and he died the following year. Haiti would officially declare independence in 1804.

lauv tour boston

Back outside the Old State House, about a 20-minute walk from where the Toussaint L’Ouverture Cultural Center is breaking ground, Charlot Lucien reflected on how Boston has been a historic hub of support for Haiti. President John Adams, who was from Massachusetts, actually sent US foreign aid to L’Ouverture.

“So, it makes sense to explore those historical connections and make sure that we move forward a certain agenda that will cement who we are and that will also contribute to booster Boston’s reputation as a bastion of freedom and abolition,” he said.
