Between this spring’s Roots Picnic in Philadelphia and September’s Global Citizen event in Manhattan, Lauryn Hill has been in a celebratory mood. Along with playing the finest moments of her genre-jumbling, 20-million-selling “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” (still her only solo studio album), the singer has thrilled audiences with a rare joviality, powerful displays of her throaty vocals and surprise mini-reunions of the Fugees , her legendary R&B/hip-hop trio with Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel.

Should Hill ever decide to make another solo album, this nice-and-rough singing style, a la Tina Turner, would make a rich calling card. With a drummer working overtime and an aggressive percussionist’s rolling congas, Hill punctuated the pain of “When It Hurts So Bad” with a cocksure swagger in each syllable, and pushed her vocals to their raw, barking extreme over the quick, flitting string arrangement of “Final Hours.” When the string sound swelled to a radiant shimmer on “Ex-Factor,” Hill’s voice grew soft and tender. When the rugged, cluttered rhythms went off the rails, her legendary speed rapping came through, loud and clear, on “Lost Ones.”  Lest she forget about her devotion to sweet reggae grooves and lilting melody, she turned the word “beautiful” — during her supple rendition of “To Zion” — into a rubbery, repetitive prayer. Later, she pulled the phrase “love line” out of the Motown-meets-Thom-Bell-like “Tell Him” and got lost and longing in the hypnotic mantra’s reverie.

No sooner had Hill wrapped up her “Miseducation” tribute with a sensationally unsteady “Doo Wop (That Thing)” than the singer grew pensive, as she began sing-speaking, “We spread that truth to the masses and socio-economic classes… a Black girl and two Haitians. We were so far ahead of the game they’re still trying to chase us.” With that, fellow Fugees Pras and Wyclef Jean hit the stage with Hill for an equal partnership of flavorful funky-but-chic hip-hop with each member zig-zagging through each other’s phrases — a rap Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, if you will. Unlike previous outings where the Fugees’ legend was synopsized down to their three biggest hits, their set on this night was full blown and totemic.

Along with the tart, reggae-fied likes of “Nappy Heads” and “Zealots” and a plucky “Vocab,” the Fugees ended their set after the midnight hour with audience sing-alongs of “Ready or Not,” “Fu-Gee-La” and “Killing Me Softly with His Song.” With such hardcore harmony on display throughout this concert, here’s hoping they bring this energy and invention to a recording studio soon. Lauryn Hill and company’s particular brand of mixed-bag hip-hop magic is sorely needed.

Lauryn Hill’s 25th-anniversary tour in NYC: Everything we know so far

“The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” is turning 25.

Ready to feel very, very old? “The  Miseducation of Lauryn Hill ,” the titular performer's seminal solo debut album, turns 25 years old this month. The 1998 neo-soul record produced classic tracks like "Doo Wop (That Thing)", "Ex-Factor" and "Everything Is Everything" and earned Hill five Grammy awards, making the singer-rapper the first woman to receive that many awards in one night.

Given the popularity and pedigree of the record, it's no surprise that  Lauryn Hill will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the album that made her a superstar with a US tour this fall, including several stops in the New York area.

“The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ is and was a love song to my parents, my family, my people, my musical and cultural forebears, my teachers, my loves, my Creator,” Hill said in a press release. “I wrote love songs and protest songs—(still love songs) about the subjects and interests that inspired and moved me. I was confident that what inspired me would resonate with an audience that had been led to believe that songs of that kind could only live in the past.”

She continued, “I loved music, I loved people, I truly felt grateful to God for my life, and genuinely blessed to have a platform where I could share wisdom and perspective through music. I felt a charge to challenge the idea that certain kinds of expression and/or certain kinds of people didn’t belong in certain places. I loved showing what could work or happen provided there was imagination, creativity, and LOVE leading the way.”

Here’s everything we know so far about Lauryn Hill’s 25th-anniversary tour in NYC:

When is ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ 25th-anniversary tour coming to NYC?

After the anniversary tour plays Newark (Lauryn Hill is a Jersey girl, after all) on Tuesday, October 17 at Prudential Center , it will make its way to NYC with a Brooklyn show on Thursday, October 19 at Barclays Center .

Hill will also perform in NYC a month earlier at the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park on Saturday, September 23, alongside Red Hot Chili Peppers, Megan Thee Stallion and more.

How can I get tickets to the NYC shows?

Tickets for all tour dates will go on sale on Friday, August 25 at 10am local time, with presales beginning on Wednesday, August 23 at 10am. They'll be available on all of the usual platforms: Ticketmaster, SeatGeek, VividSeats, etc.

How much do tickets cost?

As of press time, tickets for the upper levels at Barclays Center are going for about $75 a pop, whereas a spot closest to the stage in the General Admission Pit will run you back $750.

Any news on the setlist?

No word yet on the official setlist but given that the tour is commemorating  The  Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, we'd put money down that Hill will perform most, if not all, of the tracks listed on the 16-song album, such as "Lost Ones," "Every Ghetto, Every City" and "Superstar."

Who will be supporting the tour?

The big question: will Hill be joined onstage by Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, members of  her former group, the Fugees? The answer is yes. The group played its first show together in 15 years back in September 2021 at NYC's Pier 17 and reunited yet again at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia this June. The Fugees will support Hill at U.S. dates for the anniversary tour, while Jamaican singer Koffee will take up opening the Australian gigs.

Lauryn Hill and the Fugees Gave Their Hometown a Legendary Tour Opener

By Andre Gee

“I’m home!” Lauryn Hill bellowed to the packed crowd at Newark’s Prudential Center. Her DJ, who performs as DJ Reborn, had properly set the tone for the night with an extended-minute medley of Nineties hits — though they didn’t need much of a primer. The crowd was predominantly filled with spectators who looked like they were in Hill and the Fugees ’ age bracket and had experienced the wonder of 1998’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in real-time.

Hill’s sole solo album has sold over 20 million units — initially selling over 5 million copies just six months after release. The universally lauded album won her five Grammys, including Album of the Year (making her only one of three Black women to do such). Before astrology apps warned us of every impending cosmic event, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was a supernova so rare that Hill has been able to live simply off that album (and her Fugees work).

Hill began the night solo, immediately bellowing into “Everything Is Everything” after greeting the crowd. Despite the crowd’s excitement that she was “only” 50 minutes late for her set time, it was immediately apparent that the audio levels in the arena were off. Her vocals were lower than those of her massive live band, making her singing sound muffled through most of the night. She also sang many of her classics in unique vocal arrangements that the crowd couldn’t anticipate.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Still, most fans simply sang the album arrangement at the top of their lungs. Miseducation is an album that’s seeped into people’s lives during their euphoric highs and despondent lows. All many people needed was the opening pangs of the instrumentation to go into their own world with their favorite cuts. For better or worse, seeing the woman herself onstage sometimes seemed like merely a bonus.

Billy joel is ending one of the longest droughts in music. who’s next, lauryn hill postpones tour dates due to 'serious' vocal strain.

But again, she didn’t need the bells and whistles. During the middle of the set, she gave a lengthy about her lineage in Newark, her parents fostering her artistry,  and living in the same neighborhood that she grew up in. “I’ve had the opportunity to live all around the world, but I keep coming back home,” she said to raucous applause.

Overall, the opening night, in their hometown of Newark, was a memorable occasion that would have been even better with cleaner audio mixing. It seems like Hill will continue to do her unique take on her classics, as she has for years. Fans will simply have to deal with the improvisation, which is her prerogative. If it wasn’t for her sonic choices, we wouldn’t be celebrating 25 years of a classic in the first place.

Lauryn Hill

“Thank you for your grace and patience,” Ms. Lauryn Hill gushed. “I’m ’bout to sing my voice out, but that’s okay because I’m in BK!” Ms. Hill — armed with both an admirable air of gratitude and a motivation to quell the controversy caused by her tardiness at her Oct. 17 Newark opening show — mounted a glorious celebration of her seminal Miseducation album, the Fugees’ legacy, hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, Black innovation, and family, both blood and chosen, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, on Thursday night (Oct. 19).

Ms. Lauryn Hill Pulled Off a Surprise Fugees Reunion at Global Citizen Festival

Trending on billboard.

Donning a stunning white pantsuit complete with an oversized bow on the back, Ms. Hill opened the show with “Everything Is Everything” — a subtle nod to the ways in which the show would track the interconnectedness and cyclical nature of Black music and Ms. Hill’s approach to her art.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill , Ms. Hill’s debut solo album, arrived on Aug. 25, 1998. The album debuted atop the  Billboard 200 , making her the first solo female rapper to reach No. 1 on the chart. The record, which was certified Diamond by the RIAA in 2021, spawned three Billboard Hot 100 top 40 singles: “Doo Wop (That Thing)” (No. 1, two weeks), “Ex-Factor” (No. 21) and “Everything Is Everything” (No. 35). Miseducation  won Hill five Grammys in one night, making her the first woman to do so; her album is also the first hip-hop record to receive the Grammy for album of the year. Hill’s debut solo studio album — which remains her only studio LP as a solo artist — was added to the Library of Congress in 2015.

More often than not, the new arrangements functioned as an extension of the Miseducation universe. During a lively rendition of “Final Hour,” she interpolated The LOX, DMX and Lil’ Kim’s “Money, Power & Respect” — a move that contextualized Miseducation with other hip-hop classics of its time and ilk. While singing “When It Hurts So Bad,” however, Ms. Hill beckoned the audience to re-contextualize that song with a montage of Tina Turner’s live performances playing on the jumbotron. Ms. Hill’s goal for the night was not to simply rest on the laurels of Miseducation , but to continue to imagine where else she can take the album 25 years after release.

Ms. Hill repeatedly spoke about writing and recording much of the album while she was in her 20s, and with motherhood and family informing so much of her introspection throughout the night’s show, she laid bare why it makes sense for her to never release another studio album. Towards the end of the set, she flashed a self-attributed quote on the screen that read: “This life is a process of learning.” Her (mis)education will never end. And, for what it’s worth, the new arrangements were terrific: a gospel-informed outro to “Superstar” was particularly moving, even while she was visibly voicing her frustration with the sound team because she was apparently unable to hear herself onstage. The new arrangements also allowed Ms. Hill to find new pockets, providing the foundation for some truly virtuosic rapping to complement the rasp and physicality that bookmarked her singing.

Following an action-packed solo set — at one point, she stopped the show to make sure security could attend to a fan in need of assistance — Wyclef Jean and Pras joined Ms. Hill onstage to herald the beginning of the Fugees set in celebration of The Score’s 27th anniversary. By the time the trio got into the meat of their set, the crowd — most of which looked like they experienced the height of Miseducation and The Score in real-time — didn’t have the energy Wyclef was looking for. Nonetheless, their set was just as exhilarating as Ms. Hill’s solo showcase. Between breathless renditions of “Vocab,” “Nappy Heads,” and hits like “Killing Me Softly” and “Ready or Not,” Fugees’ dynamic performance was yet another example of the old heads outclassing the new school in terms assembling an engaging and consistent live show.

Ms. Hill’s penchant for new arrangements also permeated Fugees’ set, with a drill remix of “Fu-Gee-La” drawing Wyclef into the center of the crowd as the track morphed to include snippets of Bobby Shmurda’s “Hot N—a.” Wyclef also delivered some standout solo moments, including a tender cover of Bob Marley’s classic “No Woman, No Cry” and a bombastic rendition of “911.” Given Brooklyn’s rich history of West Indian-American culture, it was a particularly rich site for Fugees to commemorate The Score , and that much was felt as Wyclef and Pras gushed about their love of Kings County, from Flatsbush Avenue to the parkway.

An intensely emotional and physical show that highlighted the multitudes of blessings music can bring in this life, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour ‘s stop in Brooklyn made for a challenging but triumphant night for two musical acts who the industry is still desperately trying to catch up to.

Lauryn Hill smiles while performing onstage.

Hip-Hop’s most elusive star is returning to the spotlight.

Lauryn Hill just announced she’s embarking on ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour’ this fall.

That includes stops at New York City’s Global Citizen Festival on Saturday, Sept. 23, Newark, NJ’s Prudential Center on Tuesday, Oct. 17 and Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Thursday, Oct. 19.

Hill isn’t going it alone either.

The five-time Grammy winner will be bringing her group Fugees to open all U.S. dates on the run from September through November.

No word on whether or not they’ll be performing with her at the Global Citizen Festival .

Want to hear “Everything Is Everything,” “Doo Wop (That Thing),” “I Used To Love Him” and so many more timeless classics live?

You can grab tickets for the highly-anticipated anniversary tour as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, Aug. 25, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Lauryn Hill set list

Wondering what Hill will play live?

While we can’t guarantee anything — although it’s likely she’ll perform at least a few tracks from “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” — here’s an educated guess based on what she played at a recent show:

01.) “Everything Is Everything” 02.) “Superstar” 03.) “When It Hurts So Bad” 04.) “Final Hour” 05.) “Lost Ones” 06.) “Every Ghetto, Every City” 07.) “Ex-Factor” 08.) “To Zion” 09.) “Nothing Even Matters” 10.) “Forgive Them Father” 11.) “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” (Frankie Valli cover) 12.) “I Used to Love Him” 13.) “Tell Him” 14.) “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” 15.) “Doo Wop (That Thing)”

The above set list comes courtesy of Set List FM .

At all U.S. concerts, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel will co-headline with Hill.

According to Variety , it’s likely they won’t be touring internationally “presumably because of member Pras Michel’s legal challenges stemming from his recent conviction on international conspiracy charges.”

In September 2021, the South Orange, NJ natives announced a 25th anniversary tour celebrating their album “The Score” but canceled a few months later due to COVID concerns.

Hip-Hop stars on tour in 2023

Hill isn’t the only iconic act back on the road this year.

Here are just five of our favorite rappers from yesteryear performing live these next few months.

•  50 Cent with Busta Rhymes

• Snoop Dogg with Wiz Khalifa

• Wu-Tang Clan with Nas

Plus, on Sept. 15, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige and Wu-Tang Clan will headline at NYC’s Madison Square Garden.

Concert Review: Lauryn Hill's 25th 'Miseducation' Celebration Passes With a Grade Curve

NEW YORK (AP) — “Twenty-five years of support. 25 years of love… it’s our first show, it’s a little challenging because we’re home, and I’ve been emotional.”

Those were the words Lauryn Hill spoke to an adoring crowd as she kicked off the “Ms. Lauryn Hill & Fugees: Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour.” Throughout the night, the artist who now styles herself as Ms. Lauryn Hill, re-lived songs from her iconic album in Newark, New Jersey ’s Prudential Center, located about 20 minutes away from her hometown of East Orange.

Standing regally with flowy black pants, jeweled sunglasses and a white shirt with oversized balloon sleeves covered by an enormous, reddish floral-like cape, Hill triumphantly proclaimed, “New Jersey, I’m home!”

As a packed house stood on their feet, the eclectic singer, flanked by a sizeable band which included a string section, began with a powerful rendition of “Everything is Everything.” Accompanying Hill were marching band students from her alma mater, Columbia High School. (Other students from the area would perform “Doo Wop (That Thing)” at the end of her set.)

But significant audio issues muffled Hill's angelic, yet powerful voice throughout the night. At times, “The Sweetest Thing” artist cut through the sound challenges, delivering beautiful renditions of some of her most popular songs.

Yelling out “Zion!” — the ode to her first born and a beloved fan favorite — Hill was greeted with enormous cheers. The deeply personal song details how she continued with her pregnancy despite industry concerns that a child would derail her promising career. As fans stood captivated while Hill emotionally belted out lyrics, pictures and home videos of a then-baby Zion played on giant screens behind her. She would follow with wonderful performances of “Nothing Even Matters,” “Too Good to Be True,” and a stirring presentation of the title track.

The sheer brilliance and the magnitude of “Miseducation” is often hard to encapsulate. Considered as one of the greatest American albums of the 20th century, it earned five Grammys, including “Album of the Year,” becoming the first hip-hop album to win that honor.

More importantly, its subjects about romance, Black love and self-worth won hearts worldwide, and that’s partly why fans are so sensitive about Ms. Hill. Sharply rapping and singing majestically — not comparative to the current melodic rap style — Hill captured both traditional R&B lovers and hardcore hip-hop fans. Disappointingly, "Miseducation'' would be her only solo studio album.

And if you’ve been wondering — yes, she was extremely tardy. While doors opened at 8 p.m., she didn’t hit the stage until about 9:50 p.m. (On Nas’s 2022 Grammy-winning best rap album, “King’s Disease II,” Hill provided a rare but stellar verse on “Nobody,” rhyming, “My awareness like Keanu in The Matrix/I’m saving souls and y’all complaining ’bout my lateness.”)

But there were other disappointments, although not entirely surprising for those who’ve followed her. Up-tempo versions of “When It Hurts So Bad,” “Superstar” and “Final Hour,” which contained hints of The Lox’s “Money Power Respect,” confused an audience unsure of how to follow along.

Rarely providing interviews, Hill addressed confusion in 2018 regarding her song arrangements (along with other rampant gossip) in a Medium op-ed, stating, “There’s no way I could continue to play the same songs over and over as long as I’ve been performing them without some variation and exploration. I’m not a robot. If I’d had additional music out, perhaps I would have kept them as they were.”

But her explanation has done little to appease fans who hold “Miseducation” in such high regard. The disappointment may have been most palpable during “Ex-Factor,” the beautiful, near flawless record about painfully and reluctantly ending a relationship. The sped-up tempo deprived the audience of the song’s emotion and connection, although fans did their best to accept what she provided.

After Hill’s solo set ended, she invited her Fugees bandmates, Wyclef Jean and Pras, on stage at around 11:10 p.m. They performed songs from their Grammy-winning catalog, as Hill revealed the group was unable to tour last year in celebration of the 25th anniversary of “The Score" like they hoped.

“A lot of people didn’t think this would happen, including some of the people on stage,” said Hill of the group’s reuniting. Pras responded to her with a resounding “Facts!” signaling he was probably one of those she was referring to.

Earlier this year, Pras Michel was found guilty of political conspiracy and is currently free ahead of sentencing.

The crowd, who would close the night at Hill’s urging by singing “Happy Birthday” to Wyclef who turned 54, rose to their feet when the group ended with their biggest hits: “Killing Me Softly,” “Ready or Not” and “Fu-Gee-La.”

In sports, home-field advantage can be a deciding factor; it’s why teams fight so hard to secure it as they head into the playoffs. A home crowd can shift the momentum of a game and provide a team with an extra boost when needed. Hill’s show was far from perfect, but she was surrounded by people who loved her, were touched by her music and those who literally grew up with her — both literally and metaphorically.

“The Miseducation” performance failed at some points, and simple fixes could’ve made it stellar. But her fans gave her a passing grade, even if they were biased, grading on a curve. And there’s nothing wrong with that — it’s what home-field advantage is for. The tour will resume Thursday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. ___

Lauryn Hill Profile

Lauryn Hill is a singer and rapper who made her debut as a solo artist in 1998 with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

After touring with her former group Fugees, Hill became involved in a romantic relationship with Jamaican entrepreneur Rohan Marley, and shortly after, became pregnant with their child. This pregnancy, as well as other circumstances in her life, inspired Hill to make a solo album. Recording sessions for the album took place from late 1997 to June 1998 mainly at Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston, as Hill collaborated with a group of musicians known as New Ark in writing and producing the songs. Primarily a neo soul album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill incorporates musical styles from R&B, hip hop, soul, and reggae. Its lyrics touch upon Hill’s pregnancy and the turmoil within the Fugees, along with themes of love and God. The album’s title was inspired by the film and autobiographical novel The Education of Sonny Carson, and Carter G. Woodson’s The Mis-Education of the Negro.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 422,624 copies in its first week, which broke a record for first-week sales by a female artist. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill produced three hit singles: “Doo Wop (That Thing)”, “Ex-Factor”, and “Everything Is Everything”.

Its lead single “Doo Wop (That Thing)” peaked at number one in the US, with the latter two singles peaking within the top 40. The album’s success propelled Hill to international superstardom, and contributed to bringing hip hop and neo soul to the forefront of popular music. At the 41st Annual Grammy Awards, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill earned 10 nominations, winning five awards, making Hill the first woman to receive that many nominations and awards in one night. By 2013, it had sold over 8 million copies in the US and over 19 million copies worldwide.

Critics generally praised The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill for Hill’s presentation of a woman’s view on life and love, along with her artistic range. New Ark, however, felt Hill and her record label did not properly credit the group on the album; a lawsuit filed by the group was settled out of court in 2001. Since the record’s release, it has been ranked in numerous best-album lists, with a number of critics regarding it as one of the greatest albums of the 1990s, as well as one of the greatest albums of all time. In 2015, it was included by the Library of Congress in the National Recording Registry.

Lauryn Hill announces Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th anniversary tour

The Fugees will also reunite to co-headline the tour's North American dates.

Emlyn Travis is a news writer at  Entertainment Weekly  with over five years of experience covering the latest in entertainment. A proud Kingston University alum, Emlyn has written about music, fandom, film, television, and awards for multiple outlets including MTV News,  Teen Vogue , Bustle, BuzzFeed,  Paper Magazine , Dazed, and NME. She joined EW in August 2022.

Ms. Lauryn Hill is headed out on the road to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her influential debut solo album.

The legendary singer-songwriter, who recently joined Nas onstage at the 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop concert in New York, announced that she will embark on The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour starting next month. The tour, which kicks off in Minneapolis, will find Hill performing and reflecting on the album's lasting impact at 17 concerts across North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

The Fugees will also reunite to co-headline the tour's North American dates following their June performance . (Fellow member Pras Michel is currently awaiting sentencing after being found guilty of conspiracy and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government earlier this year.) She will also be joined on select dates by singer-songwriter Koffee.

Reflecting on the cultural impact of her 1998 album, Hill said in a statement, " The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is and was a love song to my parents, my family, my people, my musical and cultural forebears, my teachers, my loves, my Creator. I wrote love songs and protest songs — (still love songs) about the subjects and interests that inspired and moved me. I was confident that what inspired me would resonate with an audience that had been led to believe that songs of that kind could only live in the past."

The statement continues, "I loved music, I loved people, I truly felt grateful to God for my life, and genuinely blessed to have a platform where I could share wisdom and perspective through music. I felt a charge to challenge the idea that certain kinds of expression and/or certain kinds of people didn't belong in certain places. I loved showing what could work or happen provided there was imagination, creativity and LOVE leading the way."

In EW's 1998 review , writer David Browne praised The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, calling the album "no quick withdrawal from the nostalgia bank." He added, "Easily flowing from singing to rapping, evoking the past while forging a future of her own, Hill has made an album of often-astonishing power, strength, and feeling."

Presale tickets will go on sale starting Aug. 22, and general tickets will be released at 10 a.m. local time on Aug. 25. Find more information about the tour here , and check out the tour dates below.

Lauryn Hill's Touring Company Sued For Unpaid Services Of Almost $60,000

MLH Touring Inc., the company promoting Lauryn Hill 's Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill Anniversary Tour, has been sued for breach of contract.

The touring company seems to have gotten in trouble with its service provider over the Neo Soul singer's tour. According to legal documents obtained by The Blast , MLH Touring Inc. was sued for nearly $60,000 in unpaid services and other compensatory demands.

The postponement of Lauryn Hill's 25th Anniversary Tour made waves in 2023; however, this is the first lawsuit related to the singer's show.

Eighteentwentysix Service Agency Sues Lauryn Hill's Touring Company

In the documents, Eighteentwentysix LLC, a California service provider, filed an unlimited civil case against MLH Touring Inc. for breach of contract and owed fees. The agency claimed it entered a written agreement with the touring company in or about August 2023.

Eighteentwentysix was responsible for the production, rehearsals, and other details to ensure the smooth operation of Hill's North America tour. This expensive venture saw it racking up a bill of $59,175.89.

However, MLH Touring allegedly failed to make the necessary payments when due despite the service provider's repeated demands. Hence, Eighteentwentysix was asking for the owed sum and interest at the  rate of 10% from December 5, 2023, the date of their last invoice.

The service agency also requested that Hill's touring company cover their attorney fees, the costs incurred in filing the lawsuit, and any other relief deemed just and fair by the Court.

The complaint comes six months after the "Doo Wop (That Thing)" singer announced the postponement of her tour.

Hill Postponed Her Anniversary Tour Due To Health Concerns

Last November, Hill revealed she would not be able to continue the Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill Anniversary Tour until 2024.

In a statement released to The Blast ,   she expressed her appreciation to fans who participated in the celebrations; however, she had to drop the mic.

"As many of you may know, I've been battling serious vocal strain for the past month. I made it through each show by taking prescribed Prednisone, but this can be detrimental to the body when taken in large amounts over long periods of time ," Hill explained.

She continued saying, " In order to prevent any long-term negative effect [SIC] on my voice and my body, I need to take time off to allow for real vocal recovery so that I can discontinue the medication completely."

The Grammy Winner Included More Cities On Her Tour

Hill noted that because of her health, most of the remaining 2023 shows would be rescheduled . However, she made it up to fans by promising to bring her music to more cities, her statement read:

"The shows that were canceled this year will be rescheduled for early 2024 AND because of the overwhelming response, we'll be adding new cities to the tour, including overseas. We're working on the new calendar now , and announcing soon."

Hill doubled down on her appreciation for fans, thanking them for coming out to participate in the Anniversary Tour. "We're ALL looking forward to getting back out again next year to finish this EPIC (now extended anniversary) celebration of these CLASSICS," she concluded.

Hill's Daughter Opened Up About Her Traumatic Childhood

While Hill is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of her generation, the same could not be said about her abilities as a mother.

The Blast  reported the singer's daughter, Selah Marley , dropped shocking revelations about her in a 2020 Instagram Live session.

Selah recalled growing up with the 49-year-old was challenging, saying: "She was just very angry . She was very, very angry. So so so angry. She was unapproachable, not easy to talk to." She continued:

"I was living with my grandparents half the time. She was just very angry . And so, when we got disciplined, it's crazy, I'm playing this trauma back in my head."

Selah claimed that she was walking to her death whenever her mother told her to get the belt for a disciplinary session. "My mother is an amazing woman, but she obviously didn't do everything right," she noted.

Lauryn Hill's Daughter Stressed That Her Words Came From A Place Of Love

Naturally, the story about her mother's strict discipline went viral, forcing Selah to clarify that she wasn't bashing her parents. She noted that her story was about her journey to healing from a common experience and not to shame the singer.

"The discussion that I had was a larger conversation about a certain trauma that I experienced from a lack of unity in the household," Selah explained, adding:

"This is nothing new. This is commonplace for many people & I'm glad so many of you were about to resonate with the healing that I speak of."

"But please do not go bashing my parents right now—especially my father. I never said I did not love him. I said that their shortcomings created trauma that I now need to consciously and actively heal from," Hill's daughter concluded.
