“My time at Lafayette has taught me patience and has allowed me to grow into the person I am . . . I was challenged here in both athletics and academics, and learned and grew from that. I also became more independent and more confident in myself, which I think is going to really help me in the future.”
“I’m forever grateful for the support system I’ve received. The Lafayette community has really embraced athletes, and my professors have been so gracious with their time and flexibility.”

Finding home away from home: Seniors reflect on their Lafayette experience

Pepper Prize nominees reflect on moments that made Lafayette College feel like home

We asked the 2024 George Wharton Pepper Prize nominees to reflect on their time at Lafayette and share the memories or experiences that made the College feel like home to them. Here are their stories.

Remy Oktay ’24

“For the 2022 Rivalry football game electric plane flyover, I flew the plane from its base in Connecticut to Pennsylvania, stopping at airports along the way to recharge. We were a large crew with many vehicles doing something that would be a first at each airport, so I wanted to call ahead to confirm this would work. All the airport managers gave me the green light except for the one international airport on our route, which required all air crews to have badges. Since Lafayette has an ID office, I figured it was worth asking if they could print us aviation-themed badges, and without hesitation they jumped in, proofed several designs, and produced badges with unique call signs for every crew member that allowed us to move freely around the airport. This immediate support and willingness to rally behind our goal was one of many experiences that’s made Lafayette feel like home.” – Remy Oktay ’24  (engineering studies, environmental studies, minor in data science) 2024 George Wharton Pepper Prize winner

More Information

  • The George Wharton Pepper Prize , awarded annually to the senior “who most nearly represents the Lafayette ideal,” was established in 1923 by George Wharton Pepper H’22 , a United States senator from Pennsylvania, an attorney, and a founding member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association.

Natalie Beckford ’24

“Lafayette truly became home to me through the warmth and welcoming nature of its people. While the campus itself is undeniably beautiful and comforting, it was the genuine connections I formed with others that made it feel like a place where I belonged. When I was an underclassman, meeting upperclassmen from NIA Sisterhood, Association of Black Collegians, and Brothers of Lafayette left a lasting impact. The sense of community that they showed me made me feel like I had found a family away from home.” – Natalie Beckford ’24 (international affairs, religion and politics, minor in French)

Azalea Danes ’24

“Home, to me, is about community. Finding community among friends, fellow organizers, as a mentor writing associate, and with professors who have pushed me to excel make Lafayette feel like home. On Friday evenings, I meet with organizers to read and discuss the theory we believe will help us transform our world for the better. As a writing associate, I’ve found a home among the community of students passionate about learning pedagogy and supporting students in their transition to academic writing. In the Oechsle Center for Global Education, I’ve had countless advising meetings that leave me feeling joyful at the opportunity to challenge myself to think bigger, and grow as a student.” – Azalea Danes ’24 ( international affairs, Latin American and Caribbean studies)

Tyler Osipower ’24

“I was familiar with Lafayette from a young age. When I was younger, my parents ( Bob and Kristin Osipower ’00 ) used to bring us to visit campus. I came to share their passion for the College, especially over the course of my four years. This is my home, just as it was theirs. While I’ve always had that tie to Lafayette, I was able to make the College my own. I had an entirely different experience from the rest of my family. One that sticks out was Homecoming Week during my sophomore year. I remember going to the game with my friends and spending time with the alumni. It was the first time I really felt a sense of community at Lafayette.” – Tyler Osipower ’24 (mechanical engineering, minor in government and law)

Maksym Turkot ’24

“The moment Lafayette truly felt like home was when I lost access to my home in Ukraine. This is when I fully appreciated the support from the Lafayette community. Relationships with professors and friends became so much more meaningful, and even the small things, like a trivia night in Rockwell, were so important. Without this support, it would have been much harder for me. Lafayette is my home. It always will be.” – Maksym Turkot ’24 (computer science, minor in physics)

Courtenay Lampert ’24

“Being a small campus, you run into similar faces every day. Knowing the first name of almost everyone I pass on my walks to class, sitting at the tables around me in Upper Farinon dining hall, or studying in Skillman Library’s study room next to me, makes me feel incredibly connected to the Lafayette community. I grew up in a small town, went to a small school, and then attended a college hours from that support system at home, so it’s comforting to attend a college with a similar culture. I truly found a sense of belonging here at Lafayette, and I’m incredibly grateful to have called it home these past few years.”  – Courtenay Lampert ’24 (biology)

Emma Chen ’24

“When I think of ‘home’ at Lafayette, I think of the Pre-Orientation Service Program (POSP). Starting as a first-year and ending as an executive director, I have never felt more like I belonged, like I was truly valued, and like I was surrounded by the kindest individuals than I did during the weeks of POSP. The community care and the devotion to inclusion radiate out of every single individual involved in the program; it is no wonder why we all end up so close with each other long after the week has ended. Many of my closest friends have come from this program, and being with them, engaging with my community, is what feels like home to me. I feel so lucky to have found such an incredible family within POSP.” – Emma Chen ’24 (anthropology and sociology, government and law)

Madaleine Perry ’24

“For my application to Lafayette College, I wrote my ‘Why Lafayette’ essay about dogs, after I visited and learned about how much of the faculty and staff bring their pups to campus. When I arrived on campus for the spring 2021 semester, I knew my goal was to live in the Lafayette College Dog House as soon as possible. Luckily for me, I was accepted into the program and lived in 631 Monroe for my sophomore year. On move-in day, I was unsure if I bit off more than I could chew. After meeting my neighbors and fellow housers Julia Banks ’23 , Caroline Schaeffer ’23 , and Avery Warmack ’23 , though, I knew I’d be fine. These three became my best friends and biggest support system throughout the ups-and-downs of living with and training a 6-month-old puppy, and are still my favorite people to this day. I’m forever grateful to Lafayette for my best friends, the best faculty adviser in Prof. Bianca Falbo [associate professor of English], and the hardest but most rewarding housing experience of my life.” – Madaleine Perry ’24 (mechanical engineering, theater)

Ariel Haber-Fawcett ’24

“Ironically, Lafayette started feeling like home during the time I was stuck at (my other) home in Wisconsin for a year during my leave of absence, which I decided to take during what would have been my sophomore year. Although I was 900 miles away from campus and not enrolled in any classes, I still remained involved in two student organizations: Lafayette Sunrise Movement as well as Lafayette Refugee Action. During this time, I was serving as the case management chair for Refugee Action and due to the intense complexity that came with supporting multiple refugee families from afar, our executive team grew incredibly close, and I formed many amazing friendships that I still consider some of my closest friends today. I think this is a testament to the strength of the Lafayette community; it was able to provide me with a sense of home away from home, while I was at home. On top of the deep friendships I made, it was during this time that I met my now-wife, Anastasiia Shakhurina ’22 . Although she was in Moscow and I was in Wisconsin, we were in constant communication throughout these months and began dating only a few weeks after I returned to campus the following year.” – Ariel Haber-Fawcett ’24 (international studies, mechanical engineering, minor in Spanish)

Students who want to be nurses, for example, should know that they are expected to be proficient in courses like biology in order to be successful. These would be identified by the institutions for each degree program.”

The student is ultimately responsible for knowing and completing all degree requirements. Consultation with an advisor may result in an altered plan customized for an individual student. The myPurduePlan powered by DegreeWorks is the knowledge source for specific requirements and completion.

Inside look at LSU's new recovery center. How players perform their best because of it

Portrait of Cory Diaz

BATON ROUGE — As efficient and seamless as LSU football’s new recovery center is in terms of layout and flow, it’s equally as complex, thorough and layered.

From standard treatment rooms for the players to now suites for cryotherapy, red light therapy, multiple rooms for various massage chairs, a nutrition department, weights, all along the way educating them on how to adequately take care and prepare their bodies, LSU head coach Brian Kell and the program left no stone unturned among the more than 10,000 square footage in the team’s operations building on campus.

“It’s in an integral piece to the LSU operations center — it was the missing piece,” Kelly said. “We now know that this entire football operations building is a high-performance center.

“With this addition, we believe we have the finest operations building the country.”

The expansion project cost roughly $20 million, financed through the Tiger Athletic Foundation, and features all of the latest technology to allow LSU football players to not only recover from a hard day’s practice but also expedite the healing process for a number of consistent injuries that take place on the football field, such as strained muscles and more.

MORE JU'JUAN JOHNSON Ju'Juan Johnson's role for LSU football at running back could expand. Here's why.

WHAT LSU COULD DO AT DT What Brian Kelly said LSU football could do at defensive tackle without Jacobian Guillory

“Everything is thought out,” LSU head athletic trainer Owen Stanley said. “This building is about recovery.”

Stanley took media members on a tour and showed all of the new devices at the players’ disposal. There’s massage chairs that relief lactic acid buildup. There are sleep pods that are designed to promote 20 to 45-minute REM naps with music, as achieving deep sleep following learning anything allows for a higher percentage of retention, he said.

Cryotherapy and red light therapy are all about cellular regeneration, helping LSU players bounce back faster on the cellular level.

“We’re taxing our student-athletes both physically and mentally every day, so the point of this is the get everybody’s body back at a cellular level back to status quo, or even better than it was before then when it went into that activity,” Stanley said.

Brain function was of high priority for LSU’s sports medicine staff as it pertained to the recovery center as well.

LSU now has zero-gravity saltwater beds, which Stanley has seen results of players who have suffered concussions not only healing from them quicker but also a decrease in chances of the player suffering from another concussion.

“It helps that brain healing a lot quicker and more thoroughly,” he said.

LSU receiver and returner Zavion Thomas said his favorite part of the new recovery center is the massage chairs.

“(The recovery center) impacts all of us a lot. You know, we have tough practices and after a tough practice, going in there and they have everything in there,” Thomas said. “There’s not anything not in there that we need. We love it.”

As the operations building now flows, players go from the various treatment stations to the nutrition bar, where LSU athletics director for sports nutrition Matt Frakes and his team do blood work the day guys arrive on campus as freshmen to begin the process of cultivating meal plans and supplement regimes that will allow them to perform their best.

Signs like “Feed the Beast” and “Fuel for the Work” are spackled all over the walls.

“We do sweat test and beta testing and a part of research and studies to make sure our players and how we’re improving their performance and recovery,” Frakes said. “We want to assess the middle point between athletic development, sports medicine and straight to the field.

“You always have to come to the center to know that you’re fulfilling the work required. We’re always educating.”

LSU has rows and rows of weight racks, dumbbells and medicine balls, among many other pieces of equipment for its players to use while working out. Director of athletic development Jake Flint teaches “S.W.A.T.,” or Spring/Summer Workout Accountability Team. These particular players hold themselves as well as others accountable for filling out wellness questionnaires, which Flint and Kelly use to track any given player’s progress on and off the field.

It all works hand-in-hand. From practice to recovery, nutrition and athletic training, each plays a role in the other innately.

In return, Kelly and LSU hope the new recovery options lead to healthier football players who thrive in any given situation on the field, because they're mentally and physically able do to what’s available every day.

“It allows us now to keep our players in a position where they can recover and we can get our players to perform at the highest level all year. That’s what this is about,” Kelly said. “We’re talking about the potential of 17 college football games (thanks to the College Football Player expansion), which is equal to an NFL schedule.

“The real focus here was recovery.”

Idaho college murders: Trial will be moved to new venue, judge rules

The trial of the man accused of murdering four University of Idaho students will be moved out of the county where the killings took place in late 2022, a judge ruled in a decision released Monday.

Latah County District Judge John Judge heard arguments last month about whether the trial of Bryan Kohberger,  tentatively set for next June , should be moved to Ada County, about 300 miles south and home to Idaho’s capital, Boise. At the end of the hearing, Judge said that it would be the “most difficult decision” of his career and that he would study the law and arguments before he rules.

Judge did not immediately specify the new location in granting a different venue, which he said was based on “presumed prejudice” if the trial remains in Latah County.

A new judge is expected to be brought onto the case once it moves, although it’s unclear when the Idaho Supreme Court could decide on the judge and venue. Latah County prosecutors will remain on the case through the trial.

Lawyers for Kohberger, 29, had called defense experts who said that potential jurors from Latah County would most likely have biased views of the case because of the intense media coverage and that they would be unable to provide an impartial verdict.

Defense attorneys argued there is a severe “mob mentality” against Kohberger in Latah County, and, in a filing, they included some of the reactions they said they received from a telephone survey conducted as part of a request to move the trial.

According to the defense expert who conducted the survey, one respondent said, “There would likely be a riot and he wouldn’t last long outside because someone would do the good ole’ boy justice.” Another remarked: “They’d burn the courthouse down.”

Kohberger’s public defender, Anne Taylor, argued that coverage of the case is “not a mere passing story.”

“The content is not benign, rather, it is inflammatory, emotion-evoking and often misleading, false, and poorly sourced,” she wrote in a filing.

In his ruling, Judge agreed with defense experts’ testimonies that research has shown the best way to shield against a potentially biased jury is to change venues.

Given Latah County’s smaller population of 41,000, of which just over half are eligible to serve on a jury, Judge said “it is far more likely” that residents there would have connections to someone involved in the case, making it “more likely” that they would have discussed it — and thus it would be “more difficult to make the identities of jurors private.”

“While the issue of extensive, sensationalized coverage is not unique to Latah County,” Judge added, “it is potentially more impactful given the volume of coverage coupled with the smaller population.”

Judge identified other concerns with keeping the trial in Latah, including a modestly staffed sheriff’s office handling security for the high-profile case; the small number of court clerks in Latah County, who would have to oversee a jury selection process that would involve a pool of about 6,000 people; and a county courthouse lacking sufficient space.

The “interest of justice requires that the trial be moved to a venue with the resources, both in terms of personnel and space, necessary to effectively and efficiently handle a trial of this magnitude and length so that the parties and the Court can focus on the case and not on peripheral issues,” Judge wrote.

Prosecutors argued against moving the trial, but in previous court filings they also offered a compromise for it to convene in Nez Perce or Kootenai counties, which are closer to Latah County.

Some relatives of the four students killed — Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin — have said they don’t want the trial to be moved because the local community deserves to be part of the jury.

The Goncalves family said Monday it was “incredibly disappointed” in Judge’s ruling.

“The only good thing about this decision is it will be Judge Judge's last decision in this case,” the family said in a statement, adding, “If the judge knew Latah County could not handle this trial for safety reasons, not enough court clerks, logistics and lacking space, why did we waste over a year in a county he knew was not going to handle the trial. The points he mentioned didn’t all of a sudden jump up and bite him in the rear.”

Moscow police announced the arrest of Kohberger more than a month after the four friends were fatally stabbed early Nov. 13, 2022, at an apartment house on the edge of the University of Idaho campus. Kohberger was a resident of nearby Pullman, Washington, and then a doctoral student at Washington State University.

A  not guilty plea on four counts of first-degree murder and burglary was entered on his behalf in May 2023; a possible motive for the murders remains murky.

Judge has said his trial could last about three months.

Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty if Kohberger is convicted, but Kohberger ’ s defense said in a filing last week that capital punishment would violate the U.S. Constitution. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for Nov. 7.

The prosecution anticipates providing DNA evidence, details about cellphone use and security videos to connect Kohberger to the crime.

Kohberger’s defense has suggested that he often went on late-night drives and that  cellphone tower data would show  that he had been doing so miles away when the four students were killed.
