Kwik Trip Pushing To Sell Alcohol in Minnesota

If you've been to a Kwik Trip , chances are you've noticed the small TVs playing at the gas pump. Typically, I don't pay much attention to them since the content isn't usually of interest to me. However, while filling up the other day, a message playing on the screen grabbed my attention.
I heard the click as the pump shut off letting me know my tank was full, but I was so interested in the piece playing on the little screen that I sat there for another minute to watch all of it.
Minnesota's alcohol laws are embarrassingly outdated. We're the only state in the entire country that still sells 3.2 beer and one of only a few states that restrict beer and wine sales to liquor stores. The 3.2 law dates back to probation, why is that still a thing?
The segment I saw on 'Cheddar News' or whatever they call those little TVs was about a coalition called Red, White, and Brew which is a group of "consumers and retailers dedicated to modernizing our alcohol laws to allow more freedom where we shop."
I grew up in Nebraska where liquor sales are legal in gas stations and grocery stores and I loved the convenience of one-stop shopping. I've lived in Minnesota for nearly two decades now and can't wait for this law to be updated.
Red, White, and Brew says nearly two-thirds (64%) of Minnesotans "support modernizing Minnesota's liquor laws and the convenience of having full-strength beer and wine available at grocery and convenience stores."

Kwik Trip is the pride of Wisconsin and was voted best gas station in the country for four years running by USA TODAY readers. It's not hard to see why.
Kwik Trip is more than just a gas station . It’s a grocery store. It’s clean public bathrooms. It’s staff so friendly you’d think you’re in a Trader Joe’s.
It’s also … not in the City of Milwaukee.

Yep, of the 506 Kwik Trips in Wisconsin, not one is in the state's largest city.
And according to Kwik Trip’s PR person, there won’t be one anytime soon because they say they need two to three acres for a new store and there isn’t reasonably priced real estate that size in Milwaukee.
Could Milwaukee alcohol ordinance be a factor?
But is that really the whole story? Or could it be because Milwaukee doesn’t allow gas stations to sell alcohol, an ordinance the city shares with Brookfield and Wauwatosa, who also do not have any Kwik Trip stores located in their communities.
But why not just say that and potentially create public pressure for local ordinances to change?
And what’s stopping them from building a convenient store with no gas like they already have in Madison, Eau Claire and La Crosse?
If you go down the Internet rabbit hole on this topic, it doesn’t take long to see things go off the rails. People on one side claim that the reason is obviously because “Milwaukee is a crime ridden dumpster fire.” A different camp claims it's, obviously, “racism.”

Ultimately, Kwik Trip is a business . One that has done very, very well. And if the people who run things there thought it would be profitable to open one in Milwaukee, or any new city, classic free market capitalism would say they’d do it. But they haven’t, and we may never get a straight answer from the company as to why.
So Kwik Trip loyalists who happen to live in Milwaukee, Brookfield or Tosa will just have to continue to drive out of the city limit to get their glazers and bagged milk.

La CROSSE, Wis. — Kwik Trip has released a second beer in collaboration with Karben4 Brewing.
Hot Spot Hazy IPA is sold in all of Kwik Trip’s Wisconsin stores and one store in Minnesota—a total of approximately 400 stores, said Kim Jenks, category manager of alcohol beverages and tobacco for Kwik Trip. The beer sells for $11.99 for a four-pack and will be available until the 3,000 cases produced sell out.
Chocolate coffee stout Glazer Bean was Kwik Trip's first collaboration with the Madison, Wis.-based brewery. The companies included a Kwik Series label on the Glazer Bean packaging because the businesses had hopes for future beers, Jenks said.
“Producing an additional beer was really contingent on how Glazer Bean performed when we released it last November,” she said. “As soon as we saw how quickly Glazer Bean sold, we started developing plans for Hot Spot Hazy.”
Karben4 was already brewing Hot Spot Hazy and set to start canning when COVID-19 started shutting down businesses and states were enacting stay-at-home orders, Jenks said, causing Kwik Trip to change its go-to-market strategy.
- Kwik Trip is No. 13 on the Top 40 update to CSP’s 2019 Top 202 ranking of U.S. c-store chains by number of retail outlets. CSP will release the complete 2020 list in June.
The release was announced on Kwik Trip’s social media platforms, along with a delivery schedule of when each of the stores would receive the product. Kwik Trip urged customers to reference the schedule so they could plan their next visit to their local store when they knew Hot Spot Hazy would be available.
“We tried to have a little fun with it and bring a smile to our guest’s faces during a difficult time, but [we] also wanted to make sure we were urging people to be responsible, considering the circumstances around the release,” Jenks said.
For the staff at Karben4, the timing of the beer’s release could not have been better. Karben4 has been severely affected by the loss of all its keg business and limited taproom business, said Zak Koga, who co-owns the brewery with his brother, Ryan Koga, in a post on the brewery’s website .
“The brewing and canning of Hot Spot bought us a few extra weeks of keeping our production staff mostly employed, and it bought us some time to figure things out as we transition our company to weather this storm,” Zak Koga wrote. “Thank you to our Kwik Trip brothers and sisters for your love and support! I hope that Hot Spot can provide a shimmer of light and levity for all of our Kwik Trip guests and K4 beer fans.”

Some towns prohibit all alcohol sales after 9 pm, not just liquor and wine, but beer as well. Fond du Lac and Reedsburg for sure... maybe Sparta as well but not exactly sure on that. But in most areas, it is not able to be sold between midnight and 6 or 8 a.m. 3.
There are 506 Kwik Trip stores in Wisconsin, but none in Milwaukee or two large suburban communities that prohibit alcohol sales in gas stations.
