Itinerary summary

The colonial cities.

Days 1-5 : After a first night in the capital, Managua , driven to León (around 2 hours) and view Lake Managua and Momotombo volcano along the way. Two nights allows time for a short city tour before continuing to explore this delightful colonial city independently with its cobbled streets, bustling plazas and Central America's largest cathedral. León Viejo (32km away) was the original site of the city, abandoned due to volcanic activity in the 17th century. An excursion to the Juan Venado Nature Reserve is highly recommended and can be arranged locally. Navigating between the mangroves by motor boat gives the opportunity to see a variety of exotic birds, mammals, crabs and other wildlife.

Continue south (about 3 hours), stopping at Masaya volcno along the way, and spend two nights in Nicaragua's other colonial jewel, Granada, on the southern shore of Lake Nicaragua. Founded in 1524 this is the oldest city in the New World with many colonial buildings, churches and an impressive cathedral. A short city tour will give an excellent introduction to Granada. The lake has around 354 islands (formed during volcanic eruptions) which can be visited by boat.

Ometepe Island

Days 6-8 : Driven south (about 2 hours) along the shore of Lake Nicaragua to take a ferry (1 hour) to Ometepe island, rich in history and with diverse flora and fauna. Stay three nights at an authentic island lodge with views of Ometepe's towering volcanoes, Madera and Concepcion . Spend a full day experiencing the lifestyle of the islanders and visit many sites which are part of the island's history. Possible additional activities include boat excursions, volcano hikes, swimming in the lake, mountain biking and riding.

Pacific beaches

Days 9-11 : Return to the mainland and driven (2 - 3 hours) to the Pacific coast near San Juan del Sur, to relax for three nights at a beachfront hotel.

Day 12 : Driven (about 4 hours) to Managua airport for international connections.

A stay on one of the Corn Islands (Big Corn or Little Corn) both of which are renowned for their pristine white sand beaches. The islands are 70km off the Caribbean coastline and are accessed by a short flight from Managua. To reach Little Corn, visitors must additionally take a boat from Big Corn and getting around is on foot or by boat as there are no roads.

Price and validity notes

We have tried to give you as accurate an idea of prices as possible, including meals where appropriate (but not when there are good local options so you don't pay for a meal that you might not want), accommodation, transfers, and any tours we have included.

All prices are per person based on two people sharing a room and are intended as a guide (local high or low seasons can cause some variation). All prices were correct when published but may vary with exchange rate fluctuations, fuel surcharges, or changes in the general economic situation.

To calculate the flight price we sometimes use air passes (airline-specific reduced fares available on some routes and when certain conditions are met). If you arrange your own international flights we highly recommend that you advise us as early as possible as some air passes only operate in conjunction with specific international carriers.

As a fully bonded and very experienced Tour Operator, we can help you plan and book your perfect trip to Nicaragua.

Avoid - lack of quality in the service provided

Very disappointed with the service we received from Journey Latin America. We paid over £20k for a trip to Argentina and Brazil to mark a special occasion and thanks to their lack of attention to detail and poor service, we had a nightmare journey out which almost completely ruined our holiday. At this price point we expected much more including quicker response times from our travel consultant Chris Rendell-Dunn, greater attention to detail in the preparation and delivery of our itinerary (which failed to include timings for tours, pick ups and other bookings until we asked for them) and in one instance we were given completely the wrong information about one of the hotels we stayed in. We have given a star only because the guides we had were more focussed on delivering a better service even though we felt some of the tours were at times to suit the guide and not the client.

Awful awful service from start to finish

If I could give zero stars I would. They arranged our honeymoon last year and couldn't have been less reliable, last minute hotel changes, failed to meet us on arrival on THREE occasions, we were incorrect internal flight tickets, the list really is endless. We complained on return to very little care and hardly an apology, menial compensation given and I'll also add that ABTA were also of no help. If you have an alternative travel agent please use them and not this terrible company.

I am regularly bombarded with emails…

I am regularly bombarded with emails from this company so I contacted on three separate occasions regarding trips to different South American destinations Each time I spoke to someone who took my details the trip details and then told me they would contact me with a proposed itinerary and quote . On all 3 occasions I never heard from them again . I looked around and contacted a much smaller company called Real World holidays who were so friendly and I had a fantastic trip with them to Chile and Easter Island and planning to use them for all the trips I plan in the future Your loss Journey Latim America !

We booked a holiday to Colombia a…

We booked a holiday to Colombia a couple of years ago with this company. Marvelous country but we were sent to the most mainstream tourist places having saud we preferred off the beaten track, and every time I mentioned somewhere I'd researched about was told it was either impossible to get to or they'd never heard of it, so.major disappointment. Two years later decided to give them another chance with interest in.el Salvador, consultant we spoke to was so unpleasant, proposed itinerary was over £12000. Basically they sell themselves as specialists but are very mainstream, not particularly great at customer relations and are not as great as they think. For a truly specialist and wonderful Latin America experience try veloso tours or jacada travel.

The Greatest for Latin American Adventures

Journey Latin America, or JLA as they are affectionately known as, is the best company if you want to travel to Latin America. I have been with them for over 12 years now and have never been disappointed. Their local staff are excellent in offering advice, sorting bookings and airline tickets and answering awkward questions. Their website is clear, precise, up-to-date and easy to navigate. Their final joining instructions are comprehensive and on the last trip to Central America with them two months ago, I even got a free copy of the Footprint guide to Central America. Their group leaders are the best and most of them live in or have some affection for the countries that they take you through. Apparently, the company was founded by two enthusiasts who traveled in South America many years ago the hard way! Now they make it easy for us!

A journey around Latin America: Nicaragua #13

Home to unrivalled diversity, Latin America is a melting pot of cultures

The countries that make up Latin America are as distinct from one another as the region is from other parts of the world. So, what unites them? In addition to geographical proximity and the Spanish language (with the exception of Portuguese in Brazil and French in Haiti), perhaps it’s the culture, the climate, the more relaxed outlook on life than European counterparts. There are a number of familiarities that unite them but, at the same time, many aspects that make them unique thanks to their historical context. This is, ultimately, the charm of Latin America.

With that in mind, we have prepared a broad overview of the “best of all things Latin”, with a particular focus on tourism, culture and gastronomy. With so many countries to choose from and so few pages, it won’t be possible to showcase everything at once, but we promise to profile each one in greater detail in future editions. Below are some of the highlights.

To give priority to our Latin neighbours, we will not include Brazil in this section. But worry not, if you want to find out more about this South American giant just browse any of the other editions of BBMag – Bossa Brazil Magazine online.

journey latin america nicaragua

Granada is the main attraction, where tourists can find several architectural monuments and landmarks from the colonial era.

Another city of colonial intrigue is León, near the Cerro Negro volcano, where thrill seekers can practice “volcano boarding”—yes, sliding down volcanic slopes on wooden boards!

Cuisine is essentially similar to other Central American countries. One popular dish is the vigorón , a mixture of meats cooked with potatoes or cassava, served on a banana leaf.
