Here is a comprehensive list of Sulu tourist spots/Sulu attractions you should not miss.

For many of us, Sulu is rarely told when it comes to Philippine tourism. Most of the times, mainstream media bombard us with news of kidnappings and violence happening in the province.

But the reality is, Sulu is a peaceful and a generally safe province for tourists. In fact, the local authorities have been campaigning for the end of war and promoting reconciliation.

Fortunately, Sulu’s Provincial Tourism Office has also been advocating for eco-tourism as a means to preserve the environment and promote community-based development and cultural integrity. It’s only now that people are starting to see the untold wonders hidden in Sulu’s varied landscapes.

If you are planning to visit, check out on the following Sulu attractions. Take note. Many of these are off-beaten.

That means, you’ll be seeing raw and unspoiled destinations which is a good thing especially if you’re a nature lover and an advocate of responsible tourism.

Here we go.

ABOUT SEE & DO EAT & DRINK STAY BUDGET ADVICE

Travel Insurance

Like Tawi-Tawi Island and Basilan Island , Jolo is not the most favorite travel destination in Southern Philippines due to news about kidnappings and violent encounters between the rebels and government forces.  Most travelers, including Filipinos, avoid the island and this part of the country in general so as not be dragged into the chaos.  In a way, it benefits the island as several of its natural resources remain unspoilt and not overly commercialized.

And what several people do not realize is the fact that Jolo is generally safe for tourists.  The provincial government of Sulu which the island is a part of, is actually promoting Jolo and the rest of Sulu province for others to see its beauty and charm.

Jolo Island Location

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Jolo Island summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Jolo Island in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

8 | Astana Darul Jambangan

Astana Darul Jambangan, believed to be the largest royal palace in the country, was the original palace of the Royal Sultunate of Sulu and where the sultunate was formed in the 14th century.  The grand structure has two storeys and features exposed columns on the ground floor, Y-shaped staircase in the center, and top floors surrounded by verandas.

Suggested Budget

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 500 PHP ($9 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 700 PHP ($13 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 1100 PHP ($20 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 1200 PHP ($22 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast. For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,700 PHP ($31 USD) per night. AirBnB is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 1300 PHP ($23 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD). However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda , and  Expedia .

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 300 PHP ($5 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 250 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly.

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 15-25 PHP ($.25–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips.

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option.

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

We recommend booking online to save money using: WayAway , Kiwi or Expedia .

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter.

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

You can book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  You can book online to save time and effort although it costs a little more. You can check Klook to plan your vacation.

The following is some of our best advice on traveling to Jolo Island.  Learn what you need to know BEFORE you go!

Tips & Hacks

he following are our Top 10 Tips when visiting this destination in the Philippines:

  • Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
  • Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
  • Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
  • Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
  • Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
  • Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
  • It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
  • Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
  • Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
  • Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Jolo Island, you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Consult your hotel or resort front desk as they are more likely to give you reliable information than a random stranger on the street. Be careful when approaching strangers and selective about who you approach. Always pay attention to your gut feeling and follow it.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling on Jolo Island or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

The Kapampangan Traveller

Stories, tips, techniques and bit of travel hacks in exploring the philippines, one province at a time.

SULU Province: a travel story guide

Did you know that province of Sulu is dotted with fine pristine beaches, that they have flavorful cuisine, that they have stunning architecture, that they have a colorful and vibrant culture, and more? The traditional media back then has shaped the minds of many generations of Sulu’s battered condition due to decades of armed hostilities present in the enduringly charming and splendid island province. Once you speak about Jolo, the capital of Sulu, anywhere outside their region, instant retorts are about the peril and menace existing. By then, only a handful of outsiders have the brave will to visit and explore its natural beauty. With many years of the same state, Sulu’s fine beaches and islands were able to maintain their pristine state, unlike to the well-trodden touristy beaches, where chockfull of cash flows in exchange for the apparently irreversible environmental damage.

The internet age has changed the game for Sulu. Online content creators started to braved their way to Sulu, some following local ordinances, while some doing backdoor style entries ( not recommended ) . With what the traditional media is broadcasting since these digital creatives were able to spread the word of Sulu’s awesome beaches. Fine white sand beaches lined with towering coconut trees against the clear to turquoise to deep blue waters, sans the tourist crowd. Be responsible visitor, never evade local ordinance just to have content, in exchange of your safety.

Kapampangan Traveller at Zamboanga Airport

Arriving from Manila, I am welcomed with the iconic roof of Zamboanga’s airport with the huge Bienvenidos signage. Drawing a deep breath, I excitedly disembarked from the plane and drew a huge smile as I will set foot again on the city that I fell in love with. With almost cloudless blue sky and typical humid air from the sea, this is how Zamboanga welcomed me. I can already sense from there the amount of sunburn I will earn after.

at Sulu Port

Fast forward to the 8:00 PM ferry bound to Jolo, we started to embark on a calm sea and I easily dozed to dreamland. My eyes peeled to a captain’s announcement to dock. Finally, will be able to set foot on my 78th out of the 81 provinces of the Philippines. Ms. Cath Isbarani of Sulu’s Provincial Tourism Office instructed us to wait in our very cabin. Few minutes passed, she escorted us outside and officially, setting foot Jolo’s port. We chartered a “motorela” that will whisk us around Sulu. We had a meranao-inspired breakfast in Shara’s Cafe located just beside the Jolo  Airport. I would highly recommend trying their local coffee –  I love the smoky-nutty aroma and aftertaste.

jolo port

The first destination is in the municipality of Hadji Panglima Tahil . We chartered a private boat to cross the channel separating mainland Sulu and this barangay of many islands. It took about less than an hour to reach the island of Marungas of Barangay Bangas. We docked beside a police outpost located above the clear waters of the island. After registering, we made a short trek to the other side of  Marungas Island where Rahmat Dive Resort is located. The lingering scent proves of their rich seaweed cultivation industry. Just before we will traverse a small hill, we passed by seaweed drying facility, others may find the odor repulsive. We reached the top of the hill and we are rewarded with the commanding view of the island. Clear waters envelop the island. There is a zipline facility too. Soon as we reached the resort, we hurried to see around. There are huts you can rent for the day. We spent hours frolicking around.

Panglima Tahil

Our boatman then fetched us on that very beach and transported back to mainland Sulu. We had our lunch in D’Cousins Restaurant . We feasted on their local dishes, and I enjoyed much of the Tiyulah Itum , spicy Tinola version with burnt coconut meat, and Sambal , sliced cucumber with a rich thick sauce made of tomatoes. We left the restaurant with happy tummies.

lunch in d cousins jolo

We visited next their Sulu Museum and Library . The curator shared to us information about Sulu’s history, culture and heritage. I paid particular attention on their wedding tradition – overall, I would describe it as vibrant and colorful. The museum complex features a two-storey building with different sections showing different aspects of Sulu province.

View from the balcony

The Capitol Building of Sulu itself is already a destination. Its Muslim inspired architecture depicts the castle you saw in the Aladdin movie. The capitol building features golden pointed domes. a beautiful intricate facade and inside of it is a huge peacock inspired mosaic wall. We are able to meet also their Provincial Tourism Officer, Mam Jainab.

Beautiful mosaic

Mauboh Beach is a long stretch of public beach in Patikul municipality. It is about less than half an hour of travel from Jolo downtown. It features a long stilted walkway, and low receding beach area where you can see the islands of Haji Panglima Tahil.

Mauboh beach patikul sulu (1)

The  Masjid Tulay Mosque stands loftily, defining Jolo’s skyline with its towering minarets and contrasting white facade against a typical downtown low buildings. It is the biggest mosque in Sulu and one of the most visited in the area. Once you dock in Jolo port, it is easy to identify and locate the mosque from there. There is a prayer happening at the time of our visit and we are not able to enter even after the gates. There is a plaza fronting the mosque where you can marvel its grandeur from there.

_DSC6822

Unfortunately, the  Jolo Cathedral is closed during our visit. We are only able to see its stunning facade from across the street. It features striking geometric designs with a triangular-shaped facade, akin to a pointy crown.

Jolo Cathedral

One of my objectives in Sulu is to purchase traditional Muslim attire. I was able to buy a pair of gamis in less than Php800. In Luzon, the price could have doubled. Ms. Cath ushered us to the Barter ,  where you can see many stalls selling Muslim inspired clothing at a lower price. A lot of colorful and glittery dresses for different formal occasions are on display. I purchased mine at Aiza’s Store, Stall No. 67 and 68.

Hope you can visit soon Sulu Marky

I think it’s about time for travellers to explore Mindanao this time. I never been there but I know people from Mindanao and they mentioned to me the things you posted above just like the dish called Tiyulah itum. I love that food! you made me miss it!!!:)

I missed Tiyulah Itum too, been craving since I wrote the article

I rarely see a blog post about this part of the country maybe because of the doubt about safety and security or probably people are not aware that they can actually travel to this place. I appreciate you sharing this as this can possibly fill the “gap” or doubt that we all have about the community. I am looking forward to more posts about the beauties this place can offer.

There still a huge chunk of our population that are still afraid to visit Sulu. Hope more would explore this beautiful island

That is quite a travel but all worth it! I really like to see the architecture there with my bare eyes! Parang ang ganda talaga i-drawing yung sites!

The airport is indeed iconic. I also fell in love with the Capital Building. What a beauty! It also surprised me that the names of the food offered there resemble the ones here in Indonesia. Interesting travel!

I have always wanted to explore different places. Sadly, my illness always gets the better of me, so i don’t plan out travels, and just go by whatever comes. If I’d be so lucky to choose to explore a place, it would be this one, I guess. The photos of the places you have visited there are just so lovely. The food there was also very similar to my favourites when I was still in Malaysia. Oh how I love mee goreng with sambal!

That beach dive in Mauboh beach looks sick! Now I’m aching to travel lol. The Philippines really is a gold mine and thanks to blogs like yours, I’m psyched to travel around the country 1st before anywhere else on the map 😁

Thanks for sharing another beautiful island of the Philippines. Sulu is truly a magnificent place and hard to resist that white sand beach. We are blessed to have this beauty in the country.

Grabe no? There are really so many beautiful places in the Philippines. I haven’t been to sulu but looks like it has so much to offer too just like any other provinces in PH. I think it’s not yet very touristy as of now which is good cos it’s still peaceful there I assume.

Honestly, i think the media has sort of brainwashed me into thinking Sulu is a dangerous place… but thank you for this post, you’ve painted a new picture of sulu in my head. It’s so beautiful indeed. I’ll definitely note that one has to submit letter of intent when visiting this place.

It’s my first time to read of Sulu. We have this stigma for provinces in Mindanao to be unsafe, but I agree that there are tourist-friendly places worth of visiting. I’ve been to Zamboanga City in my best friend’s hometown and though we were careful of our safety, we got interested with their food, culture and beaches. I visited Pink beach! 🙂

And kudos to you, for featuring this lovely place. Such brave soul. Loved the photos too.

This made me want to travel to sulu one day. Oh the adventute I can have. There seems to be a lot of culture to take in and places to explore there. I mean the place looks fantastic from the pictures palang!!

Sa dami ng nabasa kong travel blogs, ngayon lang ako nakabasa about Sulu. And thank you for sharing your experience, to share the beauty of Sulu. Napakayaman ng kultura natin at ang turismo. Hopefully we can be able to travel to Mindanao din. But this pandemic happened, but still, hoping for the better days to come 🙏

I am living within the Zamboanga Peninsula for years but never been to Sulu. Pero I know na marami talagang hidden paradise yung within borders ng peninsula and I haven’t (but wanted to) visit all of them one day starting in my own province Zamboanga del Norte. Curious lang ako, why need a letter of Intent prior to your visit? Is it for security purposes? Kasi I remember my mom went to Sulu, binigyan daw sila ng local government ng mga sundalo as escorts to keep them safe eh.

The photographs at Magsukul is breathtaking! I would love to travel there someday. I wouldn’t mind visiting Mauboh beach too! I’ve been visiting blogs for a while and I rarely see posts that feature Sulu. I’m from Mindanao (Davao City) and embarrassing as it sounds, I haven’t been to there. This post only shows that the Philippines has tons of hidden gems unfortunately the media depicts that some parts of Mindanao is unsafe for local & foreign travelers.

Never expected that Sulu looks like this na, maybe it’s because of technological advancements na din nga, and because sa sobrang layo na rin kaya out of my coverage nya. Para akong napunta sa ibang bansa s blog na to, it has the resemblance of Indonesian culture. Can’t wait to see the next travel story.

Yung feeling na everytime na napunta ako sa blog mo , nalalaman ko na ang dami pa lang magagandang lugar dito sa Pinas. Ang ganda pa ng mga pics kaya nakakaengganyo na puntahan.

Ohhhh, I’d love to try their food! Based from your photos, ang lakas ng Malay influences sa flavor. 🙂

parang transported to another world ka pagdating ng Sulu. ang ganda tingnan ng minarets from afar. tapos those clothes in the shop… parang ibang-iba talaga ang kultura dyan.

napakaganda! sobrang ganda! pero nacurious ako. bakit braved their way? di ba basta basta nakakapunta ang isang tao sa sulu? a tourist perhaps? or kahit tourist lang kailangan pa mag send ng letter of intent?

yes mam, all tourist/s are required to submit letter of intent for them to facilitate the tour

i really wanted to explore more of Sulu

Sir Jan, you always inspire me to explore Mindanao!! I didn’t know that Sulu has a lot of things to offer from the beautiful beaches to the magnificent architectures. Ang gaganda!! Sama mo ako next time 🙂

Galing ng sulat nyo!!!! Sana makabalik din ako sa Sulu, marami na daw nagbukas na mga spots

Salamat sa appreciation sir. Me too, i have a flight to Zambo rebookable until October, and will really be back in Sulu.

Balang araw, gusto ko rin makapag travel sa iba’t-ibang bahagi ng Pinas, katulad ng ginagawa mo. Nakaka-inspire kasi lahat ng posts mo e!!

Maraming salamat! Magsimula ka sa mga lugar malapit sa inyo, then go further. Keep safe always!

ganda… sana pwede na mgtravel

Agree. Hopefully makapagtravel na ehe

Mag-virtual travel nlng muna kami… thank you for sharing your travel experiences anyway… abangan ko pa posts mo 😍 ang ganda ng views nkakawala stress…

Sulu Province | Sulu Travel Guide + 6D Itinerary [UPDATED 2023]

  • January 1, 2023 January 18, 2023

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN TRAVELLING TO SULU PROVINCE

Whenever I think I have seen it all in the Philippines, it always gets better.

Last summer, I had the chance to visit Sulu. I must say once you get there, you’ll be struck and realize that it can easily rival the most popular beach destinations in the country.

Sulu is home to some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. I mean just look at the picture below! The islands are raw and void of any structures. There’s a sense of magic and adventure as you explore these untouched shores.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Discover Sulu with this comprehensive travel guide. Find out all the must-see Sulu tourist spots and breathtaking sights of this often-overlooked island in the south of Philippines.

IMPORTANT Before you visit, register and coordinate with the Sulu Provincial Tourism Office . They will guide you with your accommodations, tours, and transfers within the island. DIY is not advised.

HOW TO GET TO SULU FROM MANILA

Best time to visit, places to visit in sulu, where to eat, getting around, where to stay, things to pack, pasalubong from sulu, sulu itinerary 6d5n, tausug greetings, know before you go, final thoughts.

There are no direct flights from Manila to Sulu. The itinerary is Manila – Zamboanga – Sulu.

From Manila, take a flight going to Zamboanga City. From Zamboanga, there are two ways to get to Jolo City, Sulu’s capital.

Travel by Air with Sky Pasada . While this option is more expensive, I prefer it because the travel time is only an hour. The cost is Php3,600 per person for a one-way ticket. To book your ticket, just call their lines:

Zamboanga station: 09667116855

Jolo station: 09667129032

Sky Pasada travels only on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, only at 8 AM. To make it a “connecting flight”, book the 4 AM MNL-ZMB trip. This should give you an hour before your next flight going to Jolo.

When you reach the arrival area, go out and turn left to go to the departure entrance. Proceed to the Sky Pasada counter, a small counter just beside Air Asia. You are only given a 5kg free check-in baggage allowance. Anything in excess is an additional Php200 per kilo so be mindful of your luggage weight.

Note: As of January 2023, the Zamboanga to Jolo Sky Pasada route stopped operations. You may directly message them for more info.

Travel by Sea with Montenegro Lines : Maria Rebecca and Maria Diana. Opting for the overnight ferry can take you about 7-8 hours to reach Jolo. The cost per person ranges from Php 700-1000. It’s also more affordable if you have a lot of baggage. They don’t weigh your bags as you board the ferry.

From Zamboanga airport, take a cab to go to the port. Since this is an overnight trip, the ferry departure will be at 9 PM. Again, coordinate your flight time from Manila to Zamboanga.

There’s a ticketing office near the port. You can buy your ticket a day before or on the day. When you arrive at Zamboanga, make sure you have enough time to buy one as it quickly sold out.

The city’s local tourism office can also assist you with purchasing your ticket.

The best time to visit Sulu is during the dry season. March to June is ideal as the sea is normally calm and steady. Going during typhoon season can put you to risk of strong currents during island hopping. There are islands where the boats travel through an open sea.

1. Jolo City

Sulu provincial capitol.

A trip to Sulu is not complete without a visit to the Sulu Provincial Capitol. It adopted an Islamic architecture with its mosque-like structure, golden domes, and spires.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Inside, there’s colorful stained glass art by the Tausug national artist, Abdulmari Imao.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Facing the capitol is an urban park. While the park isn’t huge, it certainly makes up for the details. The garden features a water display from a marble fountain. It has a block paving pathway for strolling and several shaded benches perfect for relaxing.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Sulu National Museum

A few meters away from the Provincial Capitol is Sulu’s museum. At the entrance, you will be greeted by a wooden vessel model that was used for early sailing. The museum houses ethnographic materials that represent Sulu’s cultural heritage. It has artifacts, indigenous textiles arts, tools like blades and sheaths, historical documents, etc.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Mauboh Beach

Mauboh beach is located in Patikul, a 10-15 minute drive from Jolo City. It has powdery sand and clear waters. It makes for a good diving spot because of the coral patches and the big Japanese shipwreck. You’ll encounter a lot of fish in the shipwreck area and more as you swim further. Because of its accessibility to Jolo, this beach is usually packed with locals.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Mauboh Boulevard

Lined with restaurants, this boulevard runs along the shores of Mauboh beach. This area is popular among locals for its nightlife. The restaurants feature traditional Tausug exteriors, decorative lights, and tasty Tausug food! There were also live band performances almost every night for a lively atmosphere. It’s perfect for a local seaside dining experience.

2. Hadji Panglima Tahil

If snorkeling or diving is your thing, this is the place to be. We saw a lot of large fish, corals, anemones, clownfish, blue tang, pufferfish, lionfish, and helicopter fish. We even spotted some moray eel, sea turtles, and squids.

Bangas is the islet closest to Jolo. Just a 30-minute boat ride away. The shoreline is short, and the sand is a bit coarse. But the marine life was well worth it!

There were a lot of corals and fish close to the shore. Just put on your snorkeling gears, and you can see them even at arm’s length. The further and deeper you go, the more jaw-dropping the underwater views are. And be ready to swim with a lot of fish! Different schools of fish were swimming left and right.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

There’s also a jumping board for those seeking a thrilling cliff jump.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

A few meters from the beach is a walkway and stairs that lead to a viewpoint with a panoramic view of the saltwater and freshwater.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Bubuan is a 90-minute boat ride from Jolo. About an hour away from Bangas.

This snorkeling spot has the perfect combination of a breathtaking beach and lively marine life. Its soft, white sand and crystal clear waters are home to a variety of colorful corals, which made our snorkeling experience feel like swimming in an aquarium.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

There is a concrete boardwalk for taking pictures and a diving platform so you can easily get to the corals. If you prefer beach bumming, you can just chill by the shore and enjoy the waves.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Parang is probably my favorite municipality in Sulu. It’s only an hour’s drive from Jolo city. The beach resorts are just next to each other. The entrance fees range from Php10 to Php20 per head only.

The highlight of this resort is the Maldives-like overwater walkway and cottages. They also have a beautiful beach swing facing azure waters. For active groups, friends and families can enjoy beach volleyball.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Tanduh Beach

Sulu’s most picturesque beach! I always say that this must be how Boracay looked before being developed. There’s a long stretch of white beach with crystal-clear turquoise water and rows of palm trees. Being here is like being in a photoshopped postcard!

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Parang’s famous photogenic boardwalk is located here. At the end of the walkway is a perfect spot to jump and swim.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Underneath the concrete boardwalk makes for a very cool photo!

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Payong Payong

If you prefer a more secluded experience, you can opt to stay here. It’s a bit further from the other resorts I mentioned. This resort is relatively small, with just about 4 cottages. You’ll feel like you own the entire beach.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Capual is a 2-hour drive from Jolo. When you arrive in Omar, rent a boat to go to Capual island where the beaches are.

Taiwan Beach

The dwarf coconut palms farm makes this spot unique. The beach here is rocky, but the seascape is picturesque. I recommend spending just a few minutes here at most to walk through the dwarf palms.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Bagunbun Beach

This beach can be a quick stop en route to the main destination, Sani Sani beach. It’s not a popular stop so you’ll have the entire island to kick back savor some sweet solitude under a farm of gently swaying coconut trees.

Sani Sani Beach

If I were to name my favorite beach in Sulu, it’s definitely Sani Sani! For starters, crowds were nonexistent. There were also no structural developments within the island. Purely raw and untouched. Then there were black beach basalt rocks that adds to the ruggedness of the place. And if it doesn’t sound like paradise enough already, the beach has crystalline waters bordered by the finest white sand! It’s easily one of the best tropical beaches in the Philippines. No island can compete with the experience.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Tandang Mairan Rock Formation

Ah, a local favorite. Locals flock here to see the scenic artwork of nature, a well-defined layer of sedimentary rock. You shouldn’t miss taking photos of this dramatic rock formation.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

In addition to the stunning coastline, the waters that surround Capual are beautiful in their own right. One of the best diving I’ve ever done has been here. The corals were so colorful and fully alive.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Sikulay Hill

After a tiring day, cap your entire trip by watching the sunset here. There’s a short trail leading up to the hill. When you reach the top, you’ll see several photo view spots overlooking the sea which makes for a great sunset photo. They have a well-kept garden with varieties of exotic flora and fauna. The entrance fee is Php20.

1. Shara’s Coffee Shop

A traditional café that serves Bangbang Sug and Kahawa Sug. Bangbang Sug is a set of Tausug pastries. It usually consists of bread, rice cakes, sweet potatoes, and fried bananas. It’s best paired with Kahawa Sug, the Sulu native coffee. This place is a must-visit to get a feel of the local culture.

Best time to go: Breakfast

2. Nice Isnack Haus

A small but popular food hub best known for its Satti, a local breakfast staple. Satti is a grilled beef or chicken skewer dipped in sweet and spicy red sauce. It’s paired with rice molded into cubes and a soda. They also have the best burger in town! Their pure beef burger was a winner.

Best time to go: Breakfast/Merienda

3. D’Cousins

A well-known restaurant in the center of the city. It’s usually packed with locals so the atmosphere is fast-paced. They offer lots of choices of native Tausug cuisines. My favorite was the Beef Kulma. Similar to Caldereta but with added curry, making the flavor more Malaysian. If you want to explore the Tausug flavors, this is a good place to try a little bit of everything.

Best time to go: Lunch

4. Little Qeefs Barbeque Grill

A relaxed restaurant located along Mauboh boulevard. The place is al fresco, spacious, and has plenty of seats. It’s quite comfortable for big groups. I loved their chicken barbeque, it was flavorful and the serving was big. I paired it with a hot bowl of Tiyula Itum (tinolang itim), a black soup made of burnt coconut with braised beef.

Best time to go: Dinner

5. Shoreline Restaurant

An over-water bamboo restaurant standing on Mauboh beach. They are famous for Chicken Inasal and Pyanggang. Pyanggang is a stewed and grilled chicken, cooked in burnt coconut sauce. They serve a large chicken with two cups of rice. Don’t forget to ask for Palapa Itum, the burnt coconut sauce for an added smokey flavor. The floating restaurant concept with its ambient lighting really adds to the vibe of the place!

If you’ll be in Sulu, your base will be the province’s capital Jolo city. To get around Jolo, you can take the Tricycles around town. A trip can cost Php40-50.

If you plan to visit further towns such as Parang and Capual, you can rent a tamaraw with a driver for the day. Tamaraws are the local jeepney-like mode of transportation. The rent is Php2,500 to 4,000 with a driver, depending on the destination. Around 8-10pax can fit inside.

In case you forgot to bring some of your necessities, you can buy the rest from New Sincere Convenience Store . This grocery store is located at the center of Jolo City. I was surprised to find everything that I needed here! They have everything that you can find in a regular Puregold grocery, and more. They have imported products, beach necessities, snorkeling equipment, varieties of snacks, etc.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

One of Sulu’s most popular products is the native Sulu coffee, Kahawa Sug . The cost per pack is only Php100-200 for 200g. Sulu coffee has a strong full-flavored coffee flavor that is not too acidic and not too bitter. There was also a mangosteen variant which I found unique. I bought one and I really loved it! You can buy native coffee packs from New Sincere Convenience Store. I also liked the coffee sold at Sharas restaurant.

For traditional Tausug handicrafts and novelty items, you can visit Simply Joy Boutique . They have colorful hand-woven scarves, malongs, table runners, traditional clothing, etc. I bought a Tausug cookbook with a traditional book design cover.

  • How much – Pilasin?
  • This – Ini
  • Excuse me – Mag maaf
  • Register and coordinate with the Sulu tourism office for your visit. They will guide you with your accommodations, tours, transfers, etc.
  • Respect the local culture. Dress conservatively. You can never go wrong with a stylish shirt and loose pants. Pack swimming attires that will cover your arms and legs.
  • Sulu is an Islamic town, so most places only serve chicken and beef.
  • Bring enough cash. There are limited ATMs on the island. Only cash transactions are accepted.
  • Tourism on this island is in its early stages. So don’t expect the facilities to be fancy or developed. But hey, it adds to the off-the-beaten-path experience!
  • Sulu’s beaches and snorkeling spots are unspoiled. Let’s do our part and take care of the corals and marine life.

Sulu is a bit far from Manila, but it’s definitely worth the trip. It’s one of the few remaining unspoiled islands in the Philippines, and the beaches are world-class. The culture is unique, and the locals are proud of their island. It’s a place that offers something truly different.

Kudos to the local government for their efforts to promote safety and develop tourism efforts.

When it comes to tourism, Sulu might be the least province you would consider exploring. I don’t blame you, the peace and order situation is usually the reason why people are hesitant to visit Sulu.

Top Tourist Spots in Sulu

Well, if you are one of those few people who want to explore the province of Sulu , we list down the must-visit tourist spots in Sulu. Make sure you coordinate with the provincial tourism office of Sulu before you pack your bags and go there. The tourism officer will refer a guide to accompany you going around Sulu. The guide will bring you the “safe zone” only. Do not attempt to go beyond the “safe zone”. You only do not endanger yourself but also your tour guide.

Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Sulu, Philippines

Sulu provincial capitol.

The Sulu Provincial Capitol is definitely not the best-looking capitol in the Philippines but it certainly has its own charm. Do not forget to take a photo with the Sulu Capitol in the background.

Sulu Provincial Capitol

National Museum – Sulu Branch

The National Museum branch in Sulu was once the seat of the Provincial Museum and Library of Sulu. It is located in the provincial capital of Jolo, just a walking distance from the Sulu Provincial Capitol. This museum was established in 1981 to house ethnographic collections of Sulu culture and library.

National Museum - Sulu Branch

Camp Bud Datu

Camp Bud Datu is a military camp situated on a mountain with an overlooking view of Jolo and the Sulu Sea. It is located in the town of Indanan, Sulu, one of the safe places you can explore while in the province.

Camp Bud Datu

Maubo Beach

Located in the town of Patikul, Sulu, Maubo Beach is one of the top tourist spots in Sulu. It’s home to a 1-km long stretch of white sand beach and is not far away from Jolo.

Maubo Beach

Mayor Samier Tan Beach Resort

Situated in the town of Maimbung, Sulu, Mayor Samier Tan Beach Resort is a popular beach getaway among locals. It features a wooden bridge leading to a water cottage where you can chill and unwind. It’s surrounded by mangroves making it ideal for your Instagram #travelgoals shots.

Maimbung, Sulu

Talipao, Sulu

In Talipao, there’s a huge and colorful I love Talipao marker where you can take a photo with it as a background. You can find better markers somewhere else in the Philippines, but when you are already in Sulu, this is a must-visit tourist spot.

Talipao, Sulu

Masjid Tulay

Masjid Tulay is a prominent landmark in Jolo, Sulu. It’s considered to be the oldest mosque in the province making it one of the top tourist spots in Sulu. It was destroyed in 1974 due to the war brought by the conflict between the government and Moro National Liberation Front and was rebuilt in 2001.

Masjid Tulay

How to get to Sulu

There used to be a direct flight from Zamboanga City to Jolo but it was stopped years ago. As of now, the only way to get to Sulu is by boat. There are two types of boat you can take, one is a fastcraft and the other one is slow boat. The former takes around 4 hours and the latter takes overnight. Once in Jolo, you can rent a private vehicle so you can get around the province easily.

Again, do not forget to coordinate with the Sulu Provincial Tourism office before heading to Sulu. You can reach Ms. Jainab Abdulmajid, the provincial tourism officer at +63 9175929225 or [email protected].

Sulu: 2020 Travel Guide, Day Tour Itinerary, Expenses, Tips & Other Info

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Southern Mindanao remains underrated and out of the radar for most tourists because of the stories enveloping its land.

What many of us didn’t know, some of the most unspoiled beaches can be found here. In our recent travel to Sulu, we’ve seen how beautiful the province is and its potential for tourism just waiting to be explored.

Check out our video of Sulu!

This travel guide will help you dig in more information about Sulu and what it has to offer.

Table of Contents

Things to Consider Before Going to Sulu

It is important that you read and take into consideration all the information needed to make your Sulu visit a success. This is also the reason why we placed this information on top of the article

Coordinate with Sulu Tourism

There is no Do-It-Yourself (DIY) tour in Sulu. You have to contact the Sulu Provincial Tourism Office at 09175929225 and look for Ms. Jainab . You will then be instructed to submit a letter of intent stating the reason for your visit, what places you want to visit, names of visitors and date/number of days in Sulu then email it at [email protected] . Make sure to indicate your contact number(s) for faster communication.

A Sulu Tourism officer will arrange your itinerary, tour provider, tour guides, and police escort. The tour package is inclusive of all payments to entrances, food, and guide/police escort fees.

Buy Ferry Ticket in Advance

Once you arrive in Zamboanga airport, make sure to buy your ferry tickets right away to secure a slot. Aleson and Montenegro Lines have daily schedules from Zamboanga to Jolo, Sulu with 8-9 hours of travel time.

It is best to catch the last trip at 8 pm and spend overnight on the ferry so you won’t need to spend money on accommodation. Choose the ticket with AC, but make sure to wear something to cover your body. It gets really cold at night. Fare is Php750 one-way with a bed. You will arrive at 5 am – 6 am the following day.

Listen and Follow the Instruction

The assigned tour agency or provider will be your contact person. Make sure to listen and follow the instructions that will be given to you. In our case, Sulu Tourism assigned iTRAVEL TOURIST LANE to organize our 1-day Sulu Tour. Their office is located in Zamboanga City. We were told to wait for our tour guide before going out from the ferry once we arrived in Jolo port for safety.

Respect and Follow Local Government Protocols

There is a standard protocol in Sulu. You need to respect and follow what your guide and police escort tell you to do. Your itinerary may change if they think it is not doable at the time. There are places and things you can’t go and do as you please. Your guide and escort will be with you at all times during the tour. Don’t be bothered, as these people are naturally friendly and easy to go with. During our visit, we had two guides, Ms. Cath and Sir Dean, and one police escort (Sir Win) together with OJTs from Sulu National High School. Yes, we got a big company!

Wear Appropriate Clothes

Sulu is a Muslim province and wearing appropriate clothes during your stay and tour is a sign of respect. Avoid wearing revealing clothes, short shorts, and sando especially when you’re in town proper. You can use “malong” or scarf when touring around.

Learn Basic Tausug Words

It is not necessary to know about the Tausug dialect but to know a few will make a difference. During our stay in Sulu, we made sure that we learn something from them. We used the word “ Magsukul ” frequently and it means thank you or “salamat” in Tagalog. After buying something or leaving the place we visited, we say “Magsukul” to the locals.

How to Get to Sulu

The main gateway to Sulu and other nearby provinces such as Basilan and Tawi-Tawi is from Zamboanga City. There are two options – via ferry and plane.

Via Sea Travel

Zamboanga City to Jolo, Sulu

There are daily ferries from Zamboanga City to Jolo, Sulu, and vice versa with a travel time of 8-9 hours. Check Aleson and Montenegro Lines.

It is recommended to travel during their last trip at 8 pm and spend overnight on the ferry. You will reach Jolo, Sulu at 5 am – 6 am.

Tawi-Tawi to Jolo, Sulu

If you are coming from Tawi-Tawi, you can ride the boat from Bongao to Jolo, Sulu via the Siasi route. Travel time may take longer (18 hours on average).

Via Air Travel

Platinum Skies is serving direct flight from Zamboanga City to Jolo, Sulu. You can check their schedules at https://www.platinumskies.com/

The Best Things to Do in Sulu

Eat local delicacies.

Normally, the first itinerary in Sulu is to let the visitors experience Kahawa Sug and Bangbang Sug on a local coffee shop in Jolo.

Kahawa Sug   is known as Sulu Coffee and something you need to try when in their province. This is their native coffee and being cultivated by Tausug or the locals in Sulu.

Bangbang Sug , on the other hand, is a set of Tausug pastries with coconut as the main ingredient. It is comparable to other provinces with bibingka, suman, and kakanin but Bangbang Sug is really special. The whole set will be served to your table. We were surprised when we saw these colorful pastries. Thankfully, you only need to pay for those you ate.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Some of the names of the pastries are:

Apam  – It is known as a Tausug pancake. Thick and perfect to eat when served hot.

Daral  – A crepe rolled into a cylinder filled with sweetened coconut meat.

Putli Mandi  – Flour ball with sweet coconut sugar mix and usually purple in color

Dinglo  – Made from nipa tree extract/juice

Pitis  – Ball-like purple sticky rice with sweetened desiccated coconut inside

Wadjit  – Wrapped by banana leaf comparable to “biko” in other provinces

Pan Monggo  – Comparable to monggo bread or pande mongo

Bubungkung  – Made from flour and ripe bananas with sugar and wrapped in banana leaf

Panggi Bagon  – Sweet potato or “kamote”

Junai  – Steamed rice with burnt grated coconut and usually eaten with hard-boiled egg

Another native food to try is  Satti . It is made from strips of beef or chicken, grilled on hot coals, and put on top of a sweet and spicy red sauce.

Enjoy the White Sand Beaches in Parang, Sulu

Our original itinerary is to visit Tandu Beach , one of the famous beaches in Sulu province. It is said to have a long stretch of powdery white-sand beach and is located in Parang, Sulu. Fortunately, they replaced it with two beaches named Istambak Beach and Sionogan Beach.

Istambak Beach

Who would’ve thought that there is this kind of place in Sulu? Surprisingly, Istambak Beach exceeds our expectations and blown us away!

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Istambak Beach lies within the Zhimar Knights House Resort . We were lucky enough that there are no other visitors at that time when we visited it. The place is tranquil, relaxing and really beautiful.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

The resort has a series of floating cottages perfectly placed in seafront for visitors to enjoy the relaxing view of the sea. The alluring turquoise water is recommended for swimming and snorkeling. Don’t miss the wooden hammock hanging in the middle of the seawater. You’ll certainly love this place!

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Sionogan Beach

Our next destination is Sionogan Beach, a nearby resort just a few minutes away from Istambak Beach. This resort, on the other hand, is raw and somewhat close to local residences.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

We visited Sulu on February 14, 2020 and celebrated Valentine’s Day with the locals and the children. The Provincial Sulu Tourism has a scheduled Feeding Program for kids in Sionogan Beach, well-timed for our visit to witness this fulfilling event.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Our lunch was served and shared with Ms. Jainab and other tourism representatives, military escorts, and our guides.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Visit Sulu Provincial Capitol

The Provincial Capitol of Sulu is a gift for all eyes to see. Pure white and gold paints dominate this magnificent structure with a semicircular top.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

You can check the interior and get fascinated with the huge artsy glass window. Go straight in the viewing deck and enjoy the beautiful spot overlooking the park nearby.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

The I Love Sulu signage is a walking distance away from the capitol.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Explore the National Museum

Get to know more about Sulu province’s history and culture by visiting the Jolo National Museum. This is a two-storey building that houses ethnographic materials of Sulu. Some of the collections are Tausug clothes, classic weapons of swords and spears, musical instruments, jars, and many others.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Check the Central Mosque and Abdusakur Tan Square

A quick visit to Masjid Tulay or Central Mosque is part of the Jolo tour. This is within the town proper and the busy streets of Jolo. It’s a good place to witness the normal day-life of our Muslim brothers. In front of the mosque is where the Abdusakur Tan Square found. A small park and a good spot to see the whole structure of the Central Mosque.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Wander Around Jolo Market & Souvenir Shop

If you are eyeing to buy authentic “malong” for a very acceptable price, you go check the Jolo market. You will find a variety of native wear in vibrant colors and shapes. I Love Jolo signage is also nearby.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

Buy ref magnet or key chain at the souvenir shops.

Watch the Sunset in Maubuh Beach

To cap off our Sulu day tour adventure, we went to Maubuh Beach in Patikul, Sulu to watch the sunset and enjoy the soothing sea view.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

We ended the tour with a good chat with our police escort and guides while enjoying the scenic view with kids happily playing along the shore.

jolo sulu tourist attractions

We were accompanied to Jolo Port and they bought us our dinner before we said our goodbyes.

Sulu is such a lovely place full of potentials. We hope that in the near future, all the negativity and tension will totally vanish and the province will move forward as one of the country’s top destinations.

Magsukul Sulu for one great and memorable experience of our life!

Other Tourist Attractions in Sulu

Where to Eat in Sulu

There are many regular eateries and small cafeterias in Sulu but here are some of the recommended places to eat.

Shara’s Coffee Shop

This is normally part of your tour in Sulu. A good place to eat your breakfast and experience Kahawa Sug and Bangbang Sug.

This is one of the most popular restaurants in the province that serves Tausug dishes in Dulang, a set of dishes with Tiulah Itum (comparable to Tinola in Tagalog) but with distinctive black soup.

Jolo, the Capital City of Sulu

Historical background: a center of trade and commerce.

Tandu Beach in Parang, Sulu

Travel Guide to Sulu Province + 2 Days Itinerary

I said it before and I’ll say it again: Mindanao has the best nature attractions in the country. This is evident in Sulu, a province filled with beautiful islands and white-sand shores that will easily put other popular beach destinations in the country to shame.

I particularly loved our island hopping tour in Panglima Tahil and our visit to Tandu Beach in Parang. To think that this is just the tip of the iceberg and there are many more places to explore! I also liked the local delicacies and dishes in Sulu, which are colorful, tasty and diverse. I have already tasted Tausug dishes in Zamboanga City, but there’s a difference in enjoying bangbang for instance in their place of origin.

For anyone who’s interested in traveling here, here’s a travel guide to Sulu and sample 2-day itinerary.

P.S. Planning a trip to Mindanao? Here is our ZamBaSulTa Itinerary and Guide .

Is it safe to travel to Sulu?

Via zamboanga, via tawi-tawi, 1. enjoy native delicacies, 2. try the local coffee, 3. visit the sulu provincial capitol, 4. island hop in panglima tahil, 5. swim in white-sand beaches, hadji panglima tahil, old panamao, where to eat, where to stay, 2 days itinerary in sulu, budget and expenses, special events and festivals, things to know before you go, what to read next:.

Of course, safety is the topmost concern when traveling to Sulu. Due to its history of period military encounters, Sulu receives only a minimal number of tourists per year (around 200-300 tourists per year as of 2019).

How was our experience?

I visited here with a group in 2019. We were safe and secure for the duration of our 2-day tour here. Personally, I wasn’t worried as I saw how the tourism office prepared everything ahead of our arrival. I’m an intuitive person and there wasn’t anything to set off the alarm bells in my head.

However, it’s worth noting that every time we would go out we were accompanied by military escorts as precaution. Also, there are selected areas in Sulu that are off-limits to visitors, such as Patikul.

As such, I can’t say that Sulu is 100% safe but I’m hoping that it’s getting there.

It’s advised that everyone who visits Sulu coordinate with the Sulu Tourism Office first. They will help arrange your accommodation, tours and itinerary. As per a tourism officer I asked, foreigners are also welcome to visit Sulu.

Best Things to Do in Sulu

For breakfast, try out a staple in Sulu called bangbang. Bangbang is a set of Tausug pastries. Everything will be served at your table but you only need to pay the ones you choose to eat.

Some of my favorites include daral (crepe with sweet coconut filling) and palikambing (fried banana balls).

Bangbang or native delicacies in Sulu

If you’re a coffee lover, you should definitely take a sip of Sulu coffee.

Locals call it kahawa sug and it is made from robusta coffee beans. It is said that the Sulu coffee is endangered due to other varieties brought from other places including Malaysia. However, it is still readily available in coffee shops and restaurants. It is often served with bangbang and is enjoyed by locals all throughout the day!

By the way, you can also buy Sulu coffee grounds to take home for P70-75 per 1/4kg.

The Sulu Provincial Capitol is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful capitols in the country. Walking distance from the capitol is the I Love Sulu signage.

The municipality of Panglima Tahil is home to some of the most beautiful islands in Sulu. During our visit, we were able to see Lahat-lahat Island, Silungan Beach (Bubuan Island) and Rahmat Dive Resort (Bangas Island). There are also other islands open for visitors.

Silungan Beach, Bubuan Island

Sulu is home to several white-sand beaches. A notable one is Tandu Beach, located in the municipality of Parang. It’s a long stretch of fine white-sand, with cottages for public use.

There are regular eateries in Sulu. Suggested restaurants are as follows:

I booked a roundtrip ticket from Manila to Tawi-Tawi for 4 days. Do you think it’s possible to squeeze that time to include Sulu to my Tawi-Tawi itinerary?

Katherine Cortes

Hi Ace. Pls read the How to Get Here section. Travel time between Sulu and Tawi-Tawi via ferry is 18 hours.

Thank you for this. Glad to see your blog about Sulu. I was disappointed in one of the “bloggers” i’m following when she captioned Sulu as “Badass meaning guns and blood wars”. I called her out and still defended herself.

Lol which blog is it? Sulu isn’t 100% safe and only selected areas are open to visitors at the moment, but I get where you’re coming from. Sulu shouldn’t be simplified as a place for guns and bloodwars, tho it’s not the ideal destination either. Unfortunately, a lot of backpackers take pride in “surviving” places in Mindanao. This is true for Basilan also (though Basilan is actually safe and hasn’t had any safety issues for quite a while now).

Thank you so much for advertising the beauty of Sulu. Very few people would go for a tour of Sulu. You are giving the place a new look with this write-up. And I totally agree with you. The area has so many pristine beaches that could give the likes of Boracay and Bohol a run for their money.
