Miller expects travel plazas to be done by year’s end

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Work to reconstruct the Travel Plazas on the West Virginia Turnpike is moving along. Parkways Authority Executive Director Jeff Miller took time last week to give an update on the progress of the construction.

“I know you’ve been driving by these for going on two years and wondering where we are. I’m happy to announce the progress on these is going very well,” Miller told Gov. Jim Justice and others gathered for a press conference near the construction site.

Miller, Justice,  and Secretary of Transportation Jimmy Wriston announced the project in 2017 to rebuild the plazas with a modernized look. Miller said he believed the design would be something people will very much appreciate with a tip of the hat to the original look of those plazas called “the glass houses.”

“The glass houses of the 50s and 60s meant a lot to this area. When we had the opportunity to redesign these we took a hard look at what would people want and came up with a beautiful design. It’s something that meets today’s modern standards, but is a bit of a throwback to what the West Virginia Turnpike had at on point,” said Miller.

He anticipated completion of the projects before year’s end.

“We hope by the end of this year, Governor Justice will be cutting the ribbons as the Governor and not the U.S. Senator. We hope to get them done before then,” he added.

Justice congratulated Miller and his team for the work.

Demolition of the old travel plaza buildings began in the spring of 2023. Paramount Builders, a St. Albans-based contractor, is being paid $122.8 million to rebuild the facilities. Work is anticipated to begin on the Morton Travel Plaza in Kanawha County next spring.

Popeyes, Starbucks, Wendy’s, coming to Beckley Travel Plaza

BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Popeyes, Starbucks, and Wendy’s are set to open in the new Beckley Travel Plaza this year.

According to the West Virginia Parkways Authority, the West Virginia Turnpike’s Beckley Travel Plaza is set to open in the winter of this year.

The new travel plaza located off of I-77 at Exit 45 will feature popular chains including Popeyes, Starbucks, and Wendy’s.

This Popeyes location will become the first to open in southern West Virginia.

The travel plaza will also be home to “Mountain State Market” which will feature local and regional gourmet foods, a grab-and-go food bar, hot and cold beverages, travel accessories, electronics, healthy snacks, sundries, health and beauty aids, non-prescription drugs and much more.

AAA and AARP discounts are honored at West Virginia Made craft shops.

Discount travel guides are also offered with coupons for the surrounding area.

And of course, guests will still be able to fill up their tanks at the new facility!

Jim’s pharmacy: your partner for travel health, if you travel outside the united states, you may need vaccinations or oral medications to protect yourself from illnesses not common in the united states., no referrals needed.

We offer 30-minute consultations with a licensed Pharmacist, where they will go over your medical history and itinerary, advising you of all current travel recommendations. Each consultation is tailored specifically to you! Appointments are available for a consultation fee of $75 (plus $50 for each additional member of your party seen at the appointment). While every effort will be made to bill your medical insurance plan for any vaccines or other medications necessary, these may incur additional charges, including copay and deductible amounts. You will be provided with an International Certificate of Vaccination and Prophylaxis (ICVP), also referred as a “Yellow Card,” when necessary for your destination.

Please be aware the some vaccinations require multiple doses, and it is recommended that vaccinations are completed up to a month in advance of departure., travel vaccinations, yellow fever, japanese encephalitis, hepititis a, hepititis b, meningococcal, travel medications, traveler’s diarrhea, acute mountian sickness, motion sickness, store hours: mon-fri 8:30am - 7:00pm • saturday 9:00am - 5:00pm • sunday 12:00pm - 4:00pm, jim’s pharmacy.

Dodge City Petro Travel Plaza Excels at Retail

Keith Wade, vice president of operations at Dodge City Petro in Dodge City, Alabama, has an extensive background in the retail industry, and it shows. When I visited the location, I was struck by how well Wade and the location’s owner, Jim Hays, manage SKUs, theme the location and draw in customers with their unique offerings. 

They’ve found their niche, and they’ve carefully selected each of the items they offer. I’m usually one to favor reducing SKUs at a location, but Dodge City goes the opposite direction and it works because they know their customers and understand why they have each of the SKUs they carry. 

To find unique products that he can use to differentiate the location, Wade attends gift shows. His favorite is in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and it features 3,000 vendors.

He doesn’t let vendors control his stores and he recommends operators try to take 20 percent of their store and make it their own. Wade also makes it a point to carry the best from each of his suppliers, very much like a large format store. He isn’t just carrying products from one vendor because it is easier and he doesn’t let vendors control his stores. He has identified what he feels each of his vendors does well and makes it a point to carry their top items. He is a single store, but he deals directly with a vendor when he can if that makes more sense.

What’s more, Wade looks for products you won’t see at every truckstop. He might talk to Hasbro or Mattel potentially about products they would sell in their boutique stores versus mass market in a Walmart because he knows he can’t compete at price.

Having a successful retail operation depends on customer service, and Dodge City excels in this arena as well. Everywhere I went throughout that store before anyone knew who I was, they were asking me if they could help me. Wherever you go in that operation, employees are greeting you or thanking you for being there. Dodge City Petro is another example of a NATSO member taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary.

Dodge City does fundamental retail right, but it doesn’t stop there. There are so many good things going on at Dodge City Petro I couldn’t fit them in on one post, so this is part one of a three-part series on the location.
