Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden , the massively influential heavy metal band, is known for their audacious live shows filled with pyrotechnics, choreography and costume changes. But the best special effect on display at the Oct. 19 New York stop of the Legacy of the Beast World Tour was the huge smiles on the band members, who had a hell of a time shredding for fans after nearly 50 years in the business.

Popular on Variety

Also ambitious was the setlist, which opened with the first three cuts from their dense 2021 album “Senjutsu.” While the mid-tempo title track is light on memorable hooks, it juxtaposed McBrain’s thunderous toms with Dickinson operatic vocals, working in the lower end of his register. “Stratego” and “The Writing on the Wall” approached their classic sound more closely, but considering the hits-heavy setlist that had followed, the new material might have fit in a little better scattered throughout the night rather than a 20-minute slab at the beginning.

Early in the set, Dickinson joked of their aging fan base, “I’m amazed: Some of you are so fucking old, you should be dead!” But even as the band members march toward their 70s, their onstage antics and energy are in step with a teenage rock band, strutting, posing and throwing the devil horns because it looks cool. There were many instances where the members would wrap their arms around each other while someone was giving a particularly impressive solo, or touch the neck of a friend’s guitar and mock being zapped with electricity. That charge, conjured from grade-A heavy metal, is sure to keep Iron Maiden energized through their next world tour.

Iron Maiden performing live on stage, delivering an electrifying performance during the "Future Past Tour."

Iron Maiden, the legendary heavy metal band, recently kicked off their highly anticipated “Future Past Tour” in Slovenia to the delight of fans worldwide. The opening night of the tour proved to be a spectacle of epic proportions, leaving concert-goers in awe. However, it was the meticulously crafted setlist that truly stole the show, surprising and impressing fans with its bold song choices. Let’s delve into the thrilling details of Iron Maiden’s unforgettable performance and the significance of their song selection.

Unleashing the Madness: A Setlist to Remember

Iron Maiden took to the stage with an electrifying presence, setting the tone for an extraordinary night. The band treated the audience to a mind-blowing total of 15 tracks, carefully curated from different albums throughout their illustrious career. The setlist showcased an intriguing balance, featuring five songs each from “Somewhere in Time” and their latest release, “Senjutsu,” while also incorporating five beloved tracks from various other albums. This unexpected mix left fans buzzing with excitement and eager anticipation.

Surprises from the Start: An Explosive Opening

As the lights dimmed and the crowd roared with anticipation, Iron Maiden initiated the concert with an enthralling combination of “Evangelist” and the iconic “Blade Runner” intro. The atmosphere intensified as the band dived straight into the beloved classic, “Caught Somewhere in Time,” igniting a frenzy of applause and headbanging among the audience. The moment was particularly noteworthy as it marked the return of Adrian Smith’s awe-inspiring solo, performed live once again.

Journeying through Time and Space: Setlist Highlights

Throughout the night, Iron Maiden captivated the crowd with a series of captivating performances. “Stranger in a Strange Land” and “The Writing on the Wall” from their latest album injected a fresh energy into the concert, showcasing the band’s continued artistic prowess. A surprising inclusion came in the form of “The Prisoner” from the iconic “The Number of the Beast” album, a song that had not graced the stage since 2014, leaving fans pleasantly surprised.

Iron Maiden skillfully navigated their setlist, seamlessly transitioning from the haunting melodies of “Death of the Celts” to the infectious chorus of “Can I Play with Madness.” The band delved into the depths of their discography, treating fans to an exhilarating rendition of “Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.” However, it was the highly anticipated performance of “Alexander the Great” that truly sent shockwaves through the venue, marking its live debut and leaving a lasting impression on fans.

A Thoughtful Journey: The Artistry of the Setlist

Iron Maiden’s setlist stood out not only for its song selection but also for its thematic cohesion. Each track, in one way or another, was linked to history, time travel, or the fear of the unknown, transforming the concert into a concept show reminiscent of a theatrical performance. This attention to detail elevated the concert experience, immersing the audience in a unique and captivating narrative.

Grand Finale: Nostalgia and Unforgettable Moments

As the main set drew to a close, Iron Maiden unleashed a powerful combination of “Fear of the Dark” and “Iron Maiden,” stirring the crowd into a frenzy. These classic anthems resonated with fans, serving as a reminder of Iron Maiden’s enduring legacy. The encore left an indelible mark with “Hell on Earth” and “The Trooper,” invigorating the audience with their unyielding energy. Finally, the concert reached its pinnacle with the iconic “Wasted Years,” providing the perfect conclusion to a night filled with unforgettable moments.

A Setlist for the Ages: Iron Maiden’s Unparalleled Excellence

Iron Maiden’s “Future Past Tour” not only showcased their timeless classics but also proved that the band possesses an arsenal of hidden gems within their discography. The carefully crafted setlist, with its surprises and thematic coherence, exemplified Iron Maiden’s unwavering commitment to their craft and the sheer depth of their musical journey. It may very well be hailed as one of the band’s finest setlists in their storied career, captivating fans old and new alike.

Iron Maiden continues to set the bar high, proving that their music transcends time and remains as powerful and relevant as ever. As the “Future Past Tour” continues its global conquest, fans around the world eagerly anticipate the chance to witness this remarkable spectacle and experience the magic of Iron Maiden’s unforgettable setlist firsthand.

Iron Maiden announce 2023 UK and European dates for ‘The Future Past Tour’

Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris said in a statement: “Following the release of our latest album, ‘Senjutsu’, we updated the current ‘Legacy of the Beast Tour’ a little by opening the show with the first 3 songs from it, with the Japanese Palace stage set. As it doesn’t make a lot of sense to repeat this for a ‘Senjutsu’ album tour, we thought about other options and we’ve decided to revisit ‘Somewhere In Time’ as that tour didn’t feature in the various retrospective history tours we’ve played over the years.

“They were based on our 80’s concert videos and sadly we did not film that tour (blame the manager!!). We have had lots of requests from fans over the years for many tracks on it so we are now going to play them, plus of course a few others we know you will like! It will also be particularly satisfying to finally get to play some of the more epic tracks on ‘Senjutsu’, it’s been a long wait! 2023 is going to be an exciting time and we’re really looking forward to seeing everyone again in the UK, Ireland and around Europe.”

The band’s manager, Rod Smallwood, added: “This combination of the two albums we feel is very exciting. We know fans want to hear those epic cuts on ‘Senjutsu’ for the first time live and we think that by combining it with an iconic album like ‘Somewhere In Time’ it will make for another really special tour for fans old and new!

“Of course, for a new album tour in Europe and the UK we will go back largely to the relative intimacy of arenas and we know fans will be very happy about that too!”

Find the full European, UK and Ireland tour schedule below, with further dates to be announced in the future.

13 – Krakow, Poland, Tauron Arena 19 – Zurich, Switzerland, Hallenstadion 24 – Dublin, Ireland, 3 Arena 26 – Glasgow, Scotland, OVO Hydro 28 – Leeds, UK, First Direct Arena 30 – Manchester, UK, AO Arena

3 – Nottingham, UK, Motorpoint Arena 4 – Birmingham, UK, Utilita Arena 7 – London, UK, O2 Arena 11 – Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Ziggo Dome 13 – Antwerp, Belgium, Sportpaleis 15 – Milan, Italy, The Return of the Gods Festival

The band are currently in the final stages of their North American ‘Legacy Of The Beast World Tour’, which saw numerous rescheduled dates due to COVID-19.

In a four-star review of ‘Senjutsu’, NME wrote that the album was an “instant classic in Iron Maiden’s 41-year journey”.

“The powerhouse metal sound that’s earned them a religious following in every far-flung corner of the globe remains firm. But here, they take things further; ultimately letting imaginations run wild in an album that’s more confident and idea-packed than ever before.”

Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson kicks off UK tour in Wolverhampton – photos and setlist

His first UK solo show in 26 years

Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson played his first UK solo show in almost 26 years last night (Thursday 16th May) in Wolverhampton.

Supporting his critically-lauded new solo album ‘ The Mandrake Project ’, the triumphant gig at Wolverhampton’s The Halls was the first show of a six-date UK tour that also visits Glasgow, Manchester, Swansea, Nottingham and London.

Unlike Iron Maiden shows, which have largely set-in-stone setlists due to the band’s colossal production, Bruce switched the setlist from his recent shows in Brazil, Mexico and the US.

Opening with ‘Accident of Birth’ and closing with ‘The Tower’, Bruce drew from most of his solo repertoire – however, songs from his 1998 opus ‘The Chemical Wedding’ and ‘The Mandrake Project’ made up over 50% of the setlist.

There were also a couple of surprises for fans too in the shape of ‘Skunkworks’ track ‘Faith’ having its first outing since 1996, and Bruce covering Mott the Hoople ’s David Bowie -penned track ‘All the Young Dudes’ for the first time since 1990.

Planet Rock’s Paul Anthony was in attendance at the gig, and he praised the "tight" band and hailed Bruce’s vocals as "off the scale."

He added: “If you’ve got tickets for any of the remaining shows, you won’t be disappointed.”

The band on Bruce’s solo tour consists of bass-player Tanya O’Callaghan , keyboard maestro Mistheria, drummer Dave Moreno, and guitarists Philip Näslund and Chris Declercq.

Bruce Dickinson’s last UK solo show took place way back on 8th December 1998 at the now-demolished London Astoria 2.
