The INFR began in 1976, bringing together regional Indian Rodeo Associations from the U.S. and Canada for a championship event that allows the finest athletes of all ages to compete for glory. Here's more from the INFR's History page:

"Contestants compete for over $1,000,000 in prize money and awards throughout the year, which culminates with the Indian National Finals Rodeo, where 350+ qualified contestants compete in the 8 major events.  There were 75 Tribes represented at this year’s event.  The majority of the INFR members are also members of Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA).

The INFR has been in existence since 1976.  The INFR Commission has taken steps to increase the awareness and preservation of the INFR for the Professional Indian Cowboys and Cowgirls. Another key component that has been implemented is the INFR Scholarship Program. Since 2005, the INFR has provided over $50,000 in scholarship assistance to members of the organization, and take pride in seeing the INFR Cowboys and Cowgirls achieve their educational goals."

Pickups, horse trailers, and campers jostled for room at the Polson Fairgrounds when the Indian National Finals Rodeo Flathead River Tour Rodeo came to town Aug. 24-26. Cowboys and cowgirls from New Mexico, Arizona, Florida, many Canadian Provinces, Oklahoma, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming – 627 contestants in all – came to try to secure a berth at the INFR in Las Vegas in October.

Added to the INFR in 2006, tour rodeos allow contestants to earn additional points so they can compete at the finals and also provide added prize money so it’s worthwhile for cowboys and cowgirls to drive hundreds of miles to compete. In addition, the Flathead River Rodeo is an automatic qualifier; a person who wins his or her event at the FRR qualifies for the INFR. Plus the Flathead River Rodeo has been voted the best rodeo six times by the contestants thanks to rodeo committee members, Sheila Matt, general manager of the KwaTaqNuk Resort and Casino and Bigarm, Pete White and Elmo McDonald.

Not only did great rodeo contestants come to the rodeo but so did some of the best bucking horses and bulls from Indian stock contractors Chancy Kittson, McDonald, and Dwayne Bull to name just a few. Kittson’s bronc, Black Book, has been to the INFR as have lots of his other broncs.

Each 7 p.m. performance began with the Veteran’s Warrior Society and the Veteran’s Honor Guard presenting the flags, an invocation by rodeo announcer Ray Champ, the Star Spangled Banner, and a native drum group playing an honor song. Badger Tail sang and drummed on Thursday evening, Yamncut on Friday night, and Chief Cliff on Saturday evening.

To keep the arena clear, pickup men Manny Boggs, White, and John Hall were there for bronc riders to grab to exit their horses after the horn sounded and to collect the flank straps from the horses. A JumboTron in the arena allowed the crowd to see a replay of each ride or run.

To keep the crowd amused, Danger Dave Whitmoyer was on hand as the rodeo clown.

“Just keep your camera on me at all times, cause you never know what might happen,” Danger Dave advised.

An impressive dancer, Danger Dave specializes in crowd participation, flirts with all the ladies, and tells goofy jokes. He and rodeo announcer Ray Champ keep a running banter going, and their timing was good.

With 627 contestants, that means slack, which is where some contestants take their stock or turn at the barrels before the nightly performances. There was slack on both Thursday and Friday for the long go. Then the top 12 contestants came back for the short go on Saturday night.

Winners in each event received a pair of spurs as well as cash and a trip to the INFR.

Saturday night’s performance had cars and pickups packing the parking lot and lining Regatta Road to see the show.

Polson Fairgrounds Inc. members fired up the chuckwagon to provide food. According to Tracy Wall and Tommy Seifert, 1,000 pounds of potatoes were turned into delectable rodeo fries. To accompany the fries were burgers, sodas, lemonade, iced tea, pizza, riblets, and other items. Additional food vendors also provided grub.

For those young at heart, there was live music at the KwaTaqNuk Resort and Casino on Thursday night. Sho Down played live at the Polson Fairgrounds on Friday night, and Canadian singer Armond Duck Chief and his band played live on Saturday night.

INFR releases tour champion winners: Four area contingents among leaders

Quentin Jodie

Posted by Quentin Jodie | Oct 13, 2022 | Rodeo |

WINDOW ROCK

The Indian National Finals Rodeo paid out over $2 million dollars with its 18 tour rodeos this past year.

The nonprofit group released its 2022 INFR Tour Champions with four Diné contestants winning their respective events.

Rough Rock, Arizona cowboy Westley Benally finished first in the team roping header’s position by amassing $21,716, which is third best among the top contestant winners.

Tara Seaton (barrel racing), Wyatt Gibson (team roping – heeler) and Jacob T. Yazzie (saddle bronc) were also named INFR Tour Champions.

The 2022 season will conclude at the INFR, which is scheduled to take place from Oct. 18-22, inside the South Point Equestrian Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Westley Benally

infr tour rodeo results today

Navajo Times | Quentin Jodie INFR Tour Champions Wyatt Gibson (heeling) and Westly Benally (heading) pose for a picture during the 108th Annual Northern Navajo Fair Rodeo in Shiprock last week. Gibson finished with $17,540 and Benally amassed $21,716.

Of the tour rodeos he entered, Benally won three of them starting with an early season win at the Muskogee Nation Tour Rodeo.

It wasn’t until later this summer that the Rough Rock team roper landed his biggest haul winning both the Chippewa Cree at Rocky Boy, Montana, and Crow Fair.

He collected $7,248 at Rocky Boy and $7,828 at Crow Fair. He paired up with Gibson to win the Chippewa Cree rodeo, and at Crow Fair he took first with his older brother Hank Benally.

Those two rodeos put him over the top, as he beat out fellow Diné ropers Dwight Sells and Trey Begay as the latter two finished with $19,522 and $18,193, respectively.

“They were good rodeos,” Benally said of two northern rodeos. “Everything came together for me and my partners. We did what we could up there because we traveled a long way.”

This was Benally first time winning the tour, getting inspiration to do that after qualifying for his first INFR last year.

“I set a goal of winning the tour and sure enough I won it,” he said. “I’m very proud because I accomplished that.”

His next objective is to give himself a chance at winning an INFR world title.

“I’m going to try and win the title with my older brother Hank Benally,” he said.

Wyatt Gibson

Going into the final tour rodeo of the season, Gibson trailed fellow Diné roper Myles John by $501. The Smith Lake, New Mexico cowboy surpassed the then-leader with a first-place win at the Sky Dancer Tour Rodeo, collecting $2,313.

“I won the last rodeo and it put me up there,” Gibson said, while noting that John did not compete in the last rodeo.

As the heeling tour champion, Gibson amassed $17,540 while John won $15,729.

“I’m glad that I won it,” Gibson said. “I started the year off rough, and I picked up my slack at the of the year.

“I feel like I deserve to be with the rest of the guys that made it,” he added.

His biggest win came at Rocky Boy Tour Rodeo, which is hosted by the Chippewa Cree tribe. At that rodeo, he partnered with Benally and the two left the rodeo with $7,248 each.

His next biggest haul came at the Home of the Champions Tour Rodeo in Halliday, North Dakota where he won $4,971.

At the North Dakota rodeo, Gibson roped with brother Tobin and Talan Cummins, with the latter being his INFR partner.

Gibson’s horse, Playboy Gold, was also recognized by the INFR. The 11-year-old homegrown equine was named horse of the year.

“That’s a huge accomplishment,” he said of his horse being recognized. “You know, I’m really proud of him for winning something like that for himself.”

As a three-time qualifier, Gibson is hoping his luck will change at this year’s finals. In his debut, he made the short round and last year he roped 2-of-4 draws.

“I don’t want to count my chickens yet, but I feel like I’m roping good,” he said. “Hopefully, I’m ready for the finals.”

Jacob Yazzie

infr tour rodeo results today

File photo | Sharon Chischilly In this file photo, Jacob Yazzie is being congratulated after sharing the saddle bronc title at the 100th Annual Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial Association Rodeo this past August. Yazzie emerged as the INFR Tour Champion with $7,498 won during the 2022 season.

After leading the tour by a large margin, Yazzie had to withstand a late charge from Justin Whiteman, who placed at four of the last five tour rodeos.

Despite that heroic effort, Yazzie emerged as the tour champion with $7,498 won. Whiteman finished with $6,927, which was $571 shy of Yazzie’s total.

“This is a first for everything,” the 18-year-old cowboy said. “I wasn’t expecting to win this, but I just kept hitting all those tour rodeos.

“It was a tough battle,” he added. “I just placed at a few rodeos and the guy behind me got on a winning streak at the end.”

As for his first trip to the INFR, Yazzie said he’s hoping to make some noise.

“I’m going to try and keep it going,” he said. “I just gotta do what I do and just have fun.”

The Allentown, Arizona cowboy credits his dad, Alonzo, and his uncle, Ace Long, for showing him the ropes and guiding him in his first year as an INFR qualifier.

“They push me a lot,” he said.

Tara Seaton

infr tour rodeo results today

Navajo Times File Photo | Donovan Quintero Barrel racer Tara Seaton sets her eyes on the last barrel after she gets around the second barrel at the 74th Annual Navajo Nation Fair in Window Rock. Seaton won a horse trailer by winning the women’s all-around race.

After finishing second last year in the tour race, Seaton won this year’s competition rather comfortably. The Dilkon, Arizona cowgirl netted $15,169 with second-place finisher Graysen O’Conner winning $10,801.

“This is my first year winning it,” Seaton said, while noting that she lost the tour race by a mere $29 last year when she missed a few INFR rodeos to concentrate on here WPRA membership.

“It came down to the last INFR rodeo,” she said. “I missed the last few rodeos because I was trying to qualify for the Turquoise Circuit Rodeo. I didn’t hit any tour rodeos in September, and I finished second, but it was all good because I ended up qualifying for my first circuit finals, so it all worked out.”

Seaton cleared $3,212 at the Chippewa Cree rodeo for his biggest win this season. And to help solidify her position, Seaton won both the Fort Peck and Home of the Champions rodeos during Labor Day weekend.

Seaton collected a grand total of $3,287 at those two rodeos, earning her a nice cushion entering the final leg of the 2022 season.

“I was leading the tour prior to that,” she said of her Labor Day exploits. “But I wasn’t sure how it was going to finish out because Graysen was close enough to beat me.”

She owes a lot of her success to her prized mare, Rez Rocket, as the two were consistent throughout the year.

“We went all year long and we went up against different competition in different arenas,” she said. “For me it’s a test of stamina, not only me as a contestant, but also my horse.

“She has to be able to compete all these different rodeos, and we were able to hold onto that lead,” she added. “I mean, we never let it go. We held it from Day One, so that shows the stamina and determination that my horse has.”

Seaton said she likes her INFR chances as she is seeking her first world crown. In 2019, she took second and after the cancelation of the 2020 season due to the global pandemic she finished third last year.

“I think they’re pretty good,” she said. “The INFR is coming up with a new rule to where they drag after every six runs. I’m so happy about that and that’s a huge step forward for us barrel racers.

“In the past, they would drag after every eight and that was really tough on our horses,” she added. “You don’t really get to showcase what your horse can do (by dragging every eight) because you’re worried about keeping them standing and not having them slip or fall.”

Inside Look at World Champion's Follow-Up Season Following Record Year

Brittany Pozzi-Tonozzi had an undeniable record-breaking year in 2023 and took the rodeo and futurity worlds by storm. Here’s what the three-time World Champ has been up to recently.

  • Author: Kaitlyn Woodman

With nearly $1.5 million in earnings in 2023 alone, Tonozzi’s year was nothing short of a fairytale. From her complete takeover of the Pro Rodeo world to her futurity standouts, there wasn’t a set of results that you didn't find her name at the top.

Coming off a storybook year like that, the expectations can be high, but if anyone can withstand the pressure, it’s Tonozzi. With an unbelievable string of horses from futurity age to open level, she continues to win in the 2024 season.

Although she sits just outside of the Top 15 in the WPRA World Standings, top finishes at Texas Swing Rodeos, and just 13 rodeos on her count, she has all of the time and opportunity in the world to climb her way to the top. There is one place where she continues to dominate, however, and that is the futurity and derby scene of barrel racing.

With top finishes at the Kinder Cup, Royal Crown, and most recently, the inaugural Diamond Classic event in Abilene, Texas, she is well on her way to another great year. She sits just inside the cut for the final round of the last Texas Swing Rodeo in San Angelo after placing in the round with a 14.24-second run on Babe on The Chase, aka “Birdie.”

On top of her performance career, Tonozzi continues to maintain an impeccable breeding program comprised of dominant mare power she previously competed on and two stallions, A Guy With Proof and Blazzin The Way. Tonozzi and her husband, Garrett, breed and own prospects and offer a select few to the public each year.

In 2023, the couple consigned two top prospects to the legendary Pink Buckle Sale, totaling $600,000 for their consignments, with the 3rd highest seller of the day, “Kiss Me Good By,” for $490,000 to 4M Equine Ranch. This is no position they are a stranger to, as in 2021, they sold the second high seller and now $250,000 earning mare “Tres Chasin Babe PZ” to Teton Ridge.

Keep an eye out for this dominant force in the sport of barrel racing to see what she does to follow up her storybook year in 2024. Her winning streak is far from over, and she will continue to be an influence for many years to come.

Second-round 64 has him one back at Korn Ferry Tour’s LECOM Suncoast Classic

Change Text Size

Morgan Hoffmann was on the 16th hole at Lakewood National Golf Club, home of the Korn Ferry Tour’s LECOM Suncoast Classic, when he looked at the leaderboard.

There was his name, right at the top.

He turned to his caddie. “This is what we play for,” Hoffmann said. “This is what we live for.”

One day after shooting a season-best 65, he would sign for a second-round 64 to reach 13-under par. Although he fell one off the lead thanks to Brandon Crick’s 62, it was a positive sign for Hoffmann, a one-time PGA TOUR fixture who was diagnosed with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy in 2016.

“It’s huge progress,” Hoffmann said. “You know, I’ve been knocking rust off, I guess, since the beginning of the season. I haven’t played the last two years. It feels really good to be back out here competing again.

“This course really fits my eye and I feel good,” he added.

Hoffmann reached world No. 1 as an amateur and was an All-American at Oklahoma State before playing the PGA TOUR from 2013-17. He never won – it’s still on his to-do list – and began feeling unwell around the time he realized his right pectoral muscle had begun to atrophy. He searched high and low for a diagnosis before doctors told him he had muscular dystrophy and there wasn’t much he could do.

Frustrated with the limitations of western medicine, Hoffmann turned to psychedelics, yoga, surfing, veganism, breathwork, and even a grape cleanse. He went from Nepal for ayahuasca (hallucinogenic medicine) to buying a home in Costa Rica for its healthful Blue Zone attributes.

He also started Greyson Clothiers with Ralph Lauren designer Charlie Schaefer in 2015.

After largely disappearing from public view, Hoffmann returned to the PGA TOUR in 2022, saying he wasn’t ready to be a weekend golfer. Playing on a medical extension, he missed three cuts in five starts. That was of a piece with many of his results at the game’s highest level since 2019. Progress was slow.

The story had been much the same in five Korn Ferry Tour starts this season, as he had missed the cut three times, but on Friday he attributed much of that to poor putting. With a new putter this week, and having put a new set of irons in the bag three weeks ago, Hoffmann has been transformed at the LECOM Suncoast Classic.

“I’m very grateful to be here,” he said. “The last two years have been a lot of ups and downs, working on health still. My wife and I had a baby girl, she’s 1 (year) and 4 months now, and she’s got my heart on a string. Rai. She’s a little ball of light. It’s awesome.

“I want to be there for her,” he continued. “It’s different having a family; going home is very important and healing and rejuvenating for me. I don’t feel as much pressure to be out here grinding non-stop. I think that’s really fulfilling me more and keeping a smile on my face.”

He still talks to his friends on TOUR, and he aspires not just to rejoin them but to win. If and when that happens he will have a legitimate claim to having gone to the greatest lengths to do so. Hoffmann described his hallucinogenic ayahuasca treatment in a lengthy article in Golf Digest, recalling a “geometric butterfly” and a moth feeding him a vine, dirt, trees, and berries, after which the vine was pulled from him, an elephant appeared, and black smoke started pouring from his mouth. “It felt like the disease was coming out of me,” he said.

Unafraid to chart his own course, Hoffmann and his wife, Chelsea, have designs on opening a solar-powered healing center in their adopted home of Costa Rica. When he’s in the States, he has made his home in Jupiter, Florida, playing out of the Bear’s Club. Now he’ll be in the final group on Saturday at the LECOM Suncoast Classic.
