uk visitor visa fees

IN THIS SECTION

One of the key stages when applying for a visitor visa for the UK is paying the application fee.

Issues with your visitor visa fee can result in delays with your application, which most applicants will want to avoid, so you’ll need to ensure you pay the correct amount for the type of visa you’re applying for.

In this article, we explain how much the UK visitor visa fees are, the additional costs for optional services and how to pay the fees. We also look at the rules on refunds and how you can avoid payment problems that could impact processing of your application.

Section A: Overview of the Standard Visitor Visa

When planning to visit the United Kingdom for tourism, business, or to visit family and friends, you may have come across the term “UK visitor visa.” This visa is officially known as the “Standard Visitor visa” under the UK Immigration Rules. This is the visa most travellers would need to come to the UK for a short stay.

Standard Visitor visa holders are allowed to engage in several activities, including:

a. Tourism: Visiting landmarks, exploring cities, and experiencing UK culture.

b. Business: Attending meetings, conferences, and other business-related events.

c. Family and Friends: Visiting family members or friends who reside in the UK.

d. Medical Treatment: Receiving private medical treatment in the UK.

e. Short Courses: Enrolling in a short course of study (up to 30 days) that is not the main reason for the visit.

Employment, selling goods or services, and long-term study, however, are prohibited under the visitor route, and would require an appropriate, alternative visa .

The Standard Visitor visa typically allows a stay of up to 6 months per visit. However, there are long-term options available, such as visas valid for 2, 5, or 10 years , which permit multiple entries , with each stay lasting up to 6 months.

Read our full guide to the UK Standard Visitor visa here.

When applying for a Standard Visitor visa, you will have to pay the requisite application fee. This is charged by the UK Home Office to cover the cost of application processing and administration. How much you need to pay will depend on a number of factors, but it will be important that you pay the correct fee, as your application could otherwise be delayed.

Section B: Standard Visitor Visa Fees

The fees for the Standard Visitor visa are structured based on the length of stay and type of visa you apply for, as well as additional services you might require.

1. How Much is a UK Standard Visitor Visa

Under current rates, it costs £115 to apply for a Standard Visitor visa for the UK, lasting up to 6 months. If you’re applying for a longer-term visitor visa, the fee increases to £432 for a 2-year visitor visa, £771 for a 5-year visitor visa and £963 for a 10-year visitor visa. Remember that longer-term visitor visas still only permit stays for up to 6 months each.

If you’re coming to the UK for medical reasons, the visit visa fee is higher, at £200, but lasts for up to 11 months.

Academic visitors are charged £200 for a visit visa that lasts 12 months.

Importantly, UK visa fees are subject to change. Check the latest fee information on the UK Government website when making your application.

2. Additional Visitor Visa Costs

In addition to the standard visa fees, applicants may also incur additional costs.

a. Fast-Tracked Processing

UK visitor visas typically take three weeks to process , provided there are no issues or delays. For a faster decision on your application, you may be able to pay for expedited processing.

Under the priority service, for an additional £500 per applicant, you should receive a decision within five working days.

The super priority service offers a decision by the end of the next working day for £1000, in addition to the application processing fee.

The availability of these services might vary depending on the country you’re applying from.

Note also that even with priority or super-priority services, there might be delays if additional information is required or checks need to be made.

b. Visa Application Centre Fees

Some countries require applicants to visit a visa application centre. There might be a service charge for this.

c. Biometric Fees

Depending on which country you’re applying from, you may need to pay a separate fee to provide your biometric information (fingerprints and photograph). In the UK, this costs £19.20. Check with your local VAC to confirm if you need to pay this.

d. Courier Services

If you opt for a courier service to return your passport, you might incur additional costs.

e. Translation Services

If your supporting documents are not in English or Welsh, you may need to pay for translation services.

Section C: How to Avoid Issues with Visa Application Fees

If you pay the incorrect visitor visa application fee, your application may be delayed or rejected.

If you pay less than the required fee, your application will likely be put on hold until the correct fee is paid. You might need to provide additional proof of payment or pay the outstanding amount.

If you pay more than the required fee, you might be eligible for a refund. However, the process of claiming a refund can be time-consuming.

As such, you should double-check the correct fee before making a payment. You can find the exact fee on the UK government’s official website or by contacting the UK visa application centre.

To avoid issues with your application fee or incurring additional costs, follow these tips:

a. Double-Check Your Application

Carefully review your application form before submission to ensure all information is accurate and complete. Take your time to avoid mistakes that could result in additional charges for reapplications.

b. Gather All Required Documents

Missing or incorrect documents can result in your application being delayed or refused, potentially leading to extra costs. Make a checklist of all required documents , such as your passport, financial statements, and travel itinerary. Ensure each document meets the visa requirements and is up-to-date. Submitting a complete and accurate set of documents will reduce the risk of delays and extra fees.

c. Apply Early

Last-minute applications can necessitate the use of priority services, which come at a higher cost.

Start your visa application process well in advance of your intended travel date to give you ample time to gather documents, fill out the application form correctly, and avoid the need for fast-tracked processing services.

d. Avoid Currency Conversion Fees

When paying visa fees in a different currency, additional charges can apply due to currency conversion rates. Use a credit or debit card that offers favourable exchange rates and low conversion fees.

e. Verify Biometric Appointment Details

Missing your biometric appointment or scheduling errors can incur rescheduling fees. Double-check the date, time, and location of your biometric appointment. Arrive on time and with all necessary documents to avoid any issues that could lead to additional fees for rescheduling.

f. Monitor Your Email and Application Status

Failing to respond to requests for additional information or clarification can delay your application and incur extra fees.

Regularly check your email and the status of your application through the UKVI website. Respond promptly to any requests for further information or documentation to keep your application on track and avoid delays and additional charges.

Section D: How to Pay the UK Visitor Visa Fee

Your visitor visa application will not be processed until you have paid the fee. The Home Office offers a number of ways for you to pay the fee, including:

a. Credit/Debit Cards

Online payments are the most common method to pay the visitor visa application fee. You can usually pay online when completing your visa application form. Accepted cards vary, but most major credit and debit cards are accepted such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

b. Payment at the VAC

If you’re required to visit a Visa Application Centre to submit your application, you might have additional payment options. Most VACs accept debit and credit card payments for visa fees, while some VACs may accept cash payments. However, you should check with the specific VAC, as this option is not available everywhere.

2. How to Avoid Payment Issues

To help avoid delays or issues with your visitor visa application, follow these tips:

a. Verify Payment Methods

Confirm the payment methods accepted by your country before starting the application. This information is available on the UK government visa application website.

Check the website to ensure you are aware of all accepted payment options. This will help you prepare and choose the most convenient method for you.

b. Insufficient Funds

Payment declines often occur due to insufficient funds in your bank account or on your credit card. Make sure your bank account or credit card has enough funds to cover the visa fee. This will prevent any interruptions in the payment process.

c. Card Validity

Problems can arise if your credit or debit card is not valid or is nearing its expiration date. Ensure your card is up-to-date and will remain valid throughout the payment process. This helps avoid any last-minute issues.

d. International Transactions

Some cards may not be authorised for international transactions, leading to payment failures. Contact your bank to ensure your card is enabled for international transactions. If necessary, lift any restrictions before attempting the payment.

e. Secure Network

Using an unsecured internet connection can compromise your personal and financial information. Always use a secure internet connection when making payments.

f. Payment Receipts

Save or print the payment receipt for your records. This can be useful if any issues arise and you need to prove the payment was made. Not having a payment receipt can cause issues if there are problems with your application.

g. Duplicate Payments

Accidental double payments can occur due to refreshing the page or using the back button during the transaction. Contact the visa application helpline to request a refund for the duplicate payment. Provide proof of both transactions to facilitate the process.

h. Currency Conversion Issues

Additional charges may be incurred for currency conversion fees. Use a card that offers favourable exchange rates or minimal conversion fees. Check with your bank to find the best options for your situation.

i. Suspicious Transactions

Banks may flag transactions as suspicious, leading to delays or cancellations. Respond promptly to any verification requests from your bank. You may consider informing your bank beforehand about the upcoming international transaction to avoid it being flagged.

Section E: After Paying the Application Fee

Once you have successfully paid the application fee for your UK visitor visa, there are further steps to complete the application process.

1. Book Your Biometric Appointment

After paying the visa application fee, the next step is to book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC). During this appointment, you will be required to submit your biometric information, which includes fingerprints and a photograph. You can schedule this appointment online through the visa application website. Choose a convenient date and time for your appointment and attend promptly, as missing it can lead to delays in processing your visa.

2. Prepare Your Supporting Documents

Before attending your biometric appointment, you need to gather all the necessary supporting documents required for your visa application. These documents typically include your valid passport, proof of financial means, travel itinerary, and any additional documents specific to the purpose of your visit, such as an invitation letter from a host in the UK. Ensure all documents are up-to-date and, if they are not in English, provide certified translations.

3. Attend the Biometric Appointment

On the day of your appointment, arrive at the VAC with your appointment confirmation and all your supporting documents. During the appointment, your biometric information will be collected, and you will submit your documents for review. Follow all instructions given by the VAC staff to ensure that your biometric data and documents are accurately recorded.

4. Track Your Application

After attending the biometric appointment and submitting your documents, you can track the progress of your visa application. The UKVI website provides a tracking service that allows you to monitor the status of your application. You will also receive email updates regarding the processing of your visa. Keeping an eye on the status helps you stay informed and promptly respond to any additional requests or queries from the UKVI.

5. Wait for a Decision

The processing time for a UK visitor visa can vary, but it generally takes between three to eight weeks. During this period, the UKVI will review your application, verify your documents, and make a decision. Patience is essential during this stage, as contacting the UKVI prematurely can be counterproductive. If you have opted for priority or super-priority services, you will receive a decision more quickly.

6. Receive Your Visa

Once a decision has been made, you will be notified via email. If your application is successful, your passport will be returned to you with the visa vignette attached. This vignette will indicate the validity period of your visa and any conditions attached to your stay in the UK. Check all the details on the visa to ensure there are no errors.

7. Prepare for Your Trip

With your visa in hand, you can now finalise your travel plans. Ensure you have copies of all your important documents, including your visa, passport, and any supporting documents you may need during your stay in the UK. It is also advisable to familiarise yourself with the conditions of your visa, such as the permitted length of stay and activities you can engage in while in the UK.

Section F: Are Visitor Visa Fees Refundable or Transferrable?

Knowing whether the fee is refundable or transferable can help you manage expectations and plan your finances.

1. Non-Refundable

Generally, the application fee for a UK visitor visa is non-refundable. This means that once you have submitted your application and paid the fee, you cannot get your money back, even if your application is refused or you decide to withdraw your application.

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), the government department responsible for processing UK visa applications, has a clear policy stating that visa fees are non-refundable because the fee covers the cost of processing your application.

However, there are a few specific circumstances where a refund might be possible:

a. Service Not Provide

If you paid for a service, such as expedited processing, and the UKVI fails to deliver the service within the promised timeframe, you may be eligible for a refund of that specific service fee.

b. Administrative Errors

In cases where an error was made by the UKVI, leading to the inability to process your application, a refund might be considered.

c. Duplicate Payments

If you accidentally made a duplicate payment for the same application, you can request a refund for the additional payment by providing proof of the transactions.

If you believe any of these reasons apply to you, you would need to contact the UKVI to request the refund, providing details of your situation, including your application reference number and proof of payment.

2. Non-Transferable

The UK visitor visa application fee is also non-transferable. As such, the fee you pay for your visa application cannot be transferred to another individual or used for a different visa application. Each application is treated as a separate entity, and the fees are tied specifically to the applicant and the type of visa being applied for.

If you decide to change the type of visa you are applying for after paying the application fee, you will need to submit a new application and pay the corresponding fee for the new visa type.

If someone else needs a visa, they must submit their own application and pay the fee separately. The fee paid by one applicant cannot be transferred to another.

Applicants should, therefore, carefully consider their plans and ensure all information is correct before submitting their application and paying the fee.

Section G: Summary

Issues with your visitor visa fee can result in unwanted delays with your application. You can take steps to avoid these by ensuring the fee you pay is correct at the time you are applying and is correct for the type of visa you’re applying for.

It also helps to take steps to ensure the payment transaction does not cause problems, for example, that your method of payment is accepted, that your internet connection is secure and stable and that you respond quickly to any security prompts from your bank.

Also remember to save and print off a copy of the payment receipt as proof that you have paid the correct processing.

UK’s Standard Visitor Visa Categories

The UK Standard Visitor Visa allows non-visa nationals to visit the UK for a period of up to six months. It is suitable for tourists, business professionals, and in some cases, students. Among the requirements is a requirement to show that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your trip, provide evidence of social ties and your intent to return to your home country, and an explanation of why you intend to visit.

Visa Categories under the Standard Visitor Visa include:

UK Tourist and Leisure Visa

This category is ideal for individuals who intend to visit friends and family living in the UK. It’s also suitable for those who are planning to undertake leisure activities like sightseeing, exploring tourist attractions, and attending cultural events. A visit visa is valid for 6 months and is often issued with multiple entries.

UK Business Visit Visa

A business visit visa is issued when the main purpose of your trip is business-related activities such as client meetings, attending conferences, or engaging in specific paid activities. Check out our page on Business Visit Visa for more information.

Short-term Study Visa

For those aiming to undertake a short course of study (under 6 months in the UK).

Medical Visit visa

A visitor visa also covers those seeking to receive private medical treatment in the UK. However, be aware that you will not have access to the NHS.

How Do You Check if You Require a Visitor Visa?

You can check whether you’d require a visa to begin with using the UK government visa check service . If you are a visa national, you’d then need to apply for a visa online. Normally EEA nationals, US, Australian and certain Middle Eastern countries enjoy visa-free access to the UK for a period of 3 months in any 6-month period, also known as non visa national countries. .

How Long Will My Visitor Visa Be Valid For?

The validity period of your visit visa depends on various factors such as your past visitor visa applications, the purpose of your visit to the UK, and whether you are eligible to receive a long-term visitor visa that typically remains valid for 2, 5 or 10 years.

However, the maximum allowed stay is 6 months for each visit. It is possible for anyone to apply for a long-term visitor visa, which is more expensive than the standard visa, but there is no guarantee that you will be given a long-term visa.

Instead, you might still receive a short-term visa with no option for a refund. A standard visitor visa starts at £115 in 2024 , while 2-year and 10-year visas are £432 and £963, respectively.

UK Tourist Visa

UK Visitor Visa Requirements in 2024

As a standard visitor visa applicant, you’d need to prove your general eligibility to the UK’s Home Office . This includes:

  • A genuine intention to leave the UK at the end of your stay without overstaying more than your visa term. This is often supported by providing social ties to your home country or country of residence.
  • Providing supporting evidence for the intended activities you’re planning to do while in the UK. This could be business conferences, meetings or tourist attraction tickets, depending on the main purpose of your visit.
  • Having sufficient funds to pay for flights, accommodation and other travel expenses without the need to access public funds.

Required Documents for UK Visitor Visa

Supporting documents are among the most important steps for any Visa application. Most applicants often provide irrelevant or insufficient documents, which could result in application refusal and complicate any subsequent visitor visa requests. All documents will need to be either in English or be accompanied by a certified translation to be valid.

  • Current and old passports with at least one blank page.
  • Residence documents if you are residing in a country other than your home country.
  • A complete travel itinerary with dates and places you intend to visit.
  • Return flight itinerary if booked and proof and accommodation arrangements. If you’re planning to stay with friends or family, you’d need to provide further documentation to ensure they can host you. You’d need to include contact details of your host including name, email and phone number.
  • Your complete immigration and travel history, including places you have visited over the past 10 years.
  • Proof of sufficient funds and details of the provenance of those funds (for example, bank statements, payslips, business details, tax returns)
  • Social ties to your home country. For example, proof that you’d need to return to your home country (e.g. job/rental contracts) and details of family members in your home country
  • Estimated cost of your trip (if you are going as a family, you’d need to consider total expenses)
  • Invitation letter . This could be from a company, educational institution or friends and family depending on the main purpose of your trip.
  • Your current home address and how long you’ve lived there.
  • Information about your parents. Their names, dates of birth (if known) and nationality.
  • Your yearly income and its source, along with documents to prove that.
  • Criminal records and information regarding previous immigration or civil offences.

This list isn’t exhaustive. Every application is unique so what’s needed for someone might not be required for you. It’s, therefore, best to get the help of a professional rather than trying to piece together information and risk getting rejected. A rejected visa application from the UK might affect your visa application from countries such as the US, Canada and the EU.

We have a separate guide on visitor visa invitation letter samples ; make sure you review them as well.

How to Apply for a Visitor Visa

You can submit your application online. You will then be asked to schedule an appointment at a visa application centre near your country of residence. During this appointment, your biometrics (fingerprints and photographs) will be recorded. You may also be asked to attend a visa interview. During the interview, you will be asked about the purpose of your visit, your previous international travel history, and your plans after your travel has concluded.

UK Visitor Visa Application Processing Time

The earliest you can apply is three months before the intended date of your trip and the latest you can apply is 48 hours before your trip. However, needless to say applying that late might not be the best idea.

Typically, the processing time for a Standard Visitor Visa is about 3 weeks from the date of your application submission. However, this can vary based on the volume of applications, the country in which you’re applying from, and your personal circumstances. Always check the current processing times provided by the Home Office for the most accurate estimate.

Factors Affecting Processing Time: Delays can occur due to incomplete applications, the need for additional documentation, or during peak travel seasons when application volumes are high.

Fast Tracking Your Visitor Visa Application

Priority Visa Service is available for an additional fee.

This service expedites the processing of your visa application from around 3 weeks to a maximum of 5 working days. It’s an ideal option for travellers who need their visas approved quickly but require early planning as appointments and availability can be limited.

Super Priority Visa Service : If there is an urgent need to acquire a visa even faster, the Super Priority Service could offer the fastest turnaround, with decisions typically made by the end of the next working day after your biometric appointment. This service comes at a higher cost but is invaluable for last-minute travel needs.

How to Apply for Expedited Services : These services can be selected during the online application process. Availability may vary by location, so it’s essential to verify the options at your nearest visa application centre.

Our skilled immigration solicitors provide a comprehensive expedited application service to ensure that your submission is swiftly processed with the highest probability of approval. Can I Extend My Stay in the UK Beyond 6 Months?

UK’s visitor visa is typically granted for up to six months and generally cannot be extended, except under specific circumstances. Exceptions are mainly for academic visitors or medical patients.

You can also acquire a long-term visitor visa, valid for either two, five, or ten years. However, they also come with an additional fee. Despite the extended duration of these visas, any single stay is limited to a maximum of six months. Nevertheless, the visas allow for multiple entries within the validity period.

Common Application Mistakes

Incomplete Forms : Double-check every section of your application form. Incomplete applications are a common reason for delays or refusals.

Insufficient Documentation : Ensure you have all required documents, and they clearly support your application’s claims. Lack of evidence regarding your finances or intentions in the UK can lead to refusal.

Misunderstanding the Visa Type : Apply for the visa that matches your primary reason for visiting. Misclassifying your visit can result in unnecessary complications.

Not Following Instructions for Document Submission : Pay attention to the specifics of how and where to submit your documents. This includes following any requirements for translating documents not in English or Welsh.

Overlooking the Importance of the Cover Letter : Although not always mandatory, a cover letter explaining the purpose of your visit and outlining your application can clarify any complexities.

How Much Does a Visitor Visa Cost?

When considering the cost of various UK visas, it’s important to note that fees vary significantly based on the visa type and the duration for which it is issued. Here’s an overview of the current costs for some key visa types (figures from the UK Gov website):

Standard Visitor visa £115 – 6 months Validity

Standard Visitor visa for medical reasons £200 – 11 months per visit Validity

Standard Visitor visa for academics £200 – 12 months per visit Validity

2 year long-term Standard Visitor visa £432 – 6 months per visit Validity

5 year long-term Standard Visitor visa £771 – 6 months per visit Validity

10 year long-term Standard Visitor visa £963 – 6 months per visit Validity

Additional services, which include faster processing times, range from £500 for priority services to £1000 for super-priority services.

UK Visitor Visa Refusal

If your UK Visitor Visa is refused, there are several strategies you may consider for addressing the decision:

Submit a New Application : This allows you to rectify any errors or omissions in your initial submission, such as missing documents. However, you will need to cover the costs associated with a new application.

Request an Appea l: There is generally no right to appeal a refusal of a visit visa. Appeals are restricted to decisions involving human rights claims. This option is generally more costly and time consuming.

Apply for a Judicial Review : This is suitable for challenging the lawfulness of a decision rather than its merits and can be costly. You risk incurring legal fees from the other party, and the process can be extensive. Although no new evidence can be introduced, if successful, you might recover these costs, and the original decision could be overturned.

Short-Term Study Visits to the UK

The Standard Visitor Visa accommodates various educational activities for up to six months, detailed as follows:

Study at Accredited Institutions : Applicants can enrol in short courses, which must not exceed six months, at accredited institutions across the UK. To qualify, you must provide an acceptance letter from the institution and prove that the course cannot be done in your home country.

Research Opportunities : This is available for students enrolled in an overseas degree program, allowing them to conduct short-term research in the UK. Applicants need to demonstrate that the research is relevant to their overseas study and must be endorsed by the educational institution both in the UK and abroad.

Medical Electives : Medical students can apply to undertake clinical attachments or observer posts in the UK, which are usually unpaid. These electives should be part of the student’s course requirement and must be certified by the medical school providing the elective.

Academic Visits to the UK

Academics, including scientists and researchers, can use the Standard Visitor Visa for specific academic purposes for up to 12 months.

Key details include:

Private Medical Treatment : If you’re visiting the UK for private medical treatment, pre-arrangements with medical facilities must be established before travel. Documentation should include evidence of appointments and proof of financial means to cover all associated medical and personal expenses during the stay. This visa also necessitates showing that you intend to leave the UK at the end of the treatment period.

NHS Treatment : Visitors eligible for NHS treatment under reciprocal healthcare agreements need to provide documented authorisation from their home country’s healthcare provider along with the treatment plan. It’s crucial to verify eligibility for such treatments before applying for a visa.

Organ Donation : For organ donation, visitors must show a confirmed match and planned procedure date. Documentation should include proof of the donor and recipient’s relationship, medical suitability for donation, and the legal status of the recipient in the UK.

Visa Duration and Costs : Visits up to 6 months require a standard application, while those who need to stay up to 12 months must apply for a longer visa at a cost of £200, with potential extensions costing £1,000. Extensions for medical reasons under a Standard Visitor Visa may be granted if ongoing private medical treatment is necessary beyond the initial 6 months, supported by medical assessments and evidence of finances to cover extended stay costs.

Visit for a Paid Engagement or Event

Professionals invited to the UK for specific engagements can utilise a Standard Visitor Visa.

This visa category is specifically designed for professionals like artists, entertainers, musicians, sportspeople, and invited academics who must have a formal invitation from a recognised UK organisation. These invitations should specify the event or activity that the professional is being invited to participate in.

Participants can engage in a variety of professional activities including artistic performances, speaking at conferences, participating in sports competitions, and providing specialised services such as advocacy in a specific legal trial.

To qualify, professionals need to demonstrate their expertise and relevance to the engagement with evidence like proof of qualifications, examples of previous work, awards, or recognition in their field. The invitation letter from the hosting organisation should clearly outline the nature of the work to be performed.

The visa is valid for a stay of up to 6 months, with the expectation that the paid engagement will be completed within the first 30 days after arrival in the UK.

UK Visa Fees 2024

If you wish to come to the UK and you need a visa, you will be required to pay an application fee as part of the process.

The cost of the total fee depends on the type of visa, where you are applying from, and whether you are required to pay additional costs (such as the immigration healthcare surcharge, biometric residence permits, and any visa application centre costs).

The list of visa application costs is current and includes some of the most popular visa categories, as well as sponsor licence and citizenship fees.

If you need a trusted legal expert to assist with your application, contact us for a confidential discussion about how we can help you.

This table lists the most common visa fees and the application costs (made inside or outside the UK).

UK Visa Costs 2024

The following is a summary of the cost of the main immigration categories to obtain a UK visa.

Immigration healthcare surcharge fees

Some people may be required to pay the  immigration healthcare surcharge  (IHS) as part of their immigration application.

The IHS is a fee that immigrants pay to cover the cost of use of the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK.

There are still additional costs for some services, including prescriptions, dental treatment, and eye tests.

In general, those who are applying for a stay in the UK of longer than 6 months (or, alternatively, if a person is extending their stay while in the UK) will be required to pay the surcharge, even if they hold  private medical insurance .

A full list of who must pay the IHS is available on the  Gov.uk website . If you hold a visitor visa and you intend to enter the UK, you will not need to pay the charge.

The cost of the immigration healthcare surcharge is as follows:

In most cases, dependents will pay the same fee as the main applicant. The exact fee depends on the length of leave you are granted.

You must pay the fee as part of your application. If you fail to pay, your application may be denied.

Sponsorship costs

Since the changes to the UK immigration system, employers must now apply for sponsor licences if they wish to hire employees from the EU (as well as non-EEA employees).

The  sponsor licence application  is a complex process and it is vital that employers follow all the guidelines to ensure that their application is accepted.

The fee for a sponsor licence depends on whether the applicant is a small or large organisation, and what category of organisation it is.

Below is a table of the 2023 sponsorship application costs:

Approximately 80% of applications will be decided within eight weeks. As part of the decision-making process, UK Visas and Immigration may conduct on-site visits to your business.

In some cases, it may be possible to pay an extra £500 for an expedited decision (within ten working days).

It is important to submit a thorough and comprehensive application that is error-free to comply with the Home Office’s guidance. If not, your application could be refused or rejected.

Take the first step. Request a Fact Finding + Expert Consultation

Citizenship costs

Applying for  British citizenship  is one of the most important choices a person can make. In many cases, people will make the decision if they have held  indefinite leave to remain  for at least one year, and they fulfil the other requirements (including the minimum years of residency requirement).

It currently costs £1,580 to apply for the naturalisation process that leads to British citizenship. However, there are a number of other associated costs.

If you are submitting your citizenship application to the Home Office, you should ensure that you are fully aware of all the costs involved.

Below are the current British citizenship fees for 2024:

UK Visit Visa Fees & Cost

Did you know, overseas travelers spent almost £1.6 billion to travel to UK in March 2019 alone? This is what the statistics published by the Office For National Statistics revealed. With its rich historical and cultural heritage, Britain remains a popular tourist destination. The country is home to innumerable architectural landmarks, beaches, official royal residences, forests and woodlands, national parks , festivals and events, sports, leisure and so much more. Planning to visit the country will require you to fill up the UK Visa Application Form . The short stay visa is a legal entry permit for the UK for stay of up to 6 months or a year. The duration depends on the type of visa you apply for. While citizens of some countries are exempt from needing a visa to enter the UK, other countries require the visa mandatorily. Applicants need to pay the visa fee in Pound Sterling (GBP), which also covers the administration charges. However, the fee can also be paid in your domestic currency. So, make sure you check the exchange rate before making the payment. If your visa type falls under the Point Based System category, you will have to collect points by ticking off the visa requirements. Failing to do so could mean that your application is rejected.

What are UK Visa Fee Exemptions

In some cases, you can apply for an exemption. This helps you avoid unnecessary delays while entering the country.

  • If you are a working diplomat who has been posted to the UK.
  • If you are an international government minister or if you are accompanying one
  • If you are a member of the Commonwealth or Overseas Armed Forces, posted in the UK
  • If you are a head of a state entering the country for a state visit

After you pay the visa fee, keep the receipt safe, since you will need to produce it for the visa interview. After the interview, you will receive an email update on the status of your application.

UK Visa Application Fees 2024

Paul Richmond

If you’re in the process of applying for a UK visa from outside the country, seeking an extension of your stay or aiming for indefinite leave to remain, it’s important to note that a Home Office visa application fee is a mandatory part of the application process.

The specific amount of the visa application fee will vary based on factors such as the type of visa or immigration application you’re pursuing, whether the application is made from within or outside the UK, and whether you opt for a Home Office premium service for application submission.

It’s crucial for each applicant to pay the applicable fee for their visa or immigration application in full, following the prescribed application procedure. The UK visa application fee to be paid will be determined by the fee in effect on the date of your application.

In 2024, the United Kingdom’s visa landscape is evolving, and with it, so are the costs involved. Whether you’re planning a short-term visit, a long-term study programme, to join family or pursue employment in the UK, understanding the latest visa application fees is crucial for effective planning. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk you through the latest UK visa application fees in force in 2024, shedding light on the various categories and recent changes. Read to the end for links to some other posts from the Richmond Chambers immigration team that will help you prepare for your journey to the UK.

Recent Changes to UK Visa Application Fees

The cost of applying for most, but not all, UK visas increased on 4 October 2023.  Further increases were introduced on 10 April 2024 and 1 July 2024. These increases applied to both applications for entry clearance submitted from outside the UK and applications for leave to remain submitted from within the UK.  Settlement and citizenship applications were also impacted.

The application fee for the majority of UK visa applications increased by 15% in October 2023, with the cost of applying for a family visa (spouse, civil partner, fiance, proposed civil partner, unmarried partner), indefinite leave to remain and naturalisation as a British citizen increasing by 20% and the cost of applying for a student visa increasing by 35%:

  • Visit visa (6 months) – up by 15% from £100 to £115
  • Skilled Worker visa – up by 15% from £625 to £719
  • Innovator Founder visa – up by 15% from £1,036 to £1,191
  • High Potential Individual visa – up by 15% from £715 to £822
  • UK Expansion Worker visa – up by 15% from £259 to £298
  • Global Talent visa – up by 15% from £623 to £716
  • Scale-up visa – up by 15% from £715 to £822
  • Student visa – up by 35% from £363 to £490
  • Graduate visa – up by 15% from £715 to £822
  • Spouse visa – up by 20% from £1,538 to £1,846
  • Indefinite leave to remain – up by 20% from £2,404 to £2,885
  • Naturalisation as a British citizen – up by 20% from £1,250 to £1,500

The cost of applying for a settlement visa from overseas via the Priority Visa Service dropped by 13% from £573 to £500, but the cost of applying for a non-settlement visa from overseas via the Priority Visa Service increased by 100% from £250 to £500.

However, not all UK visa application fees increased.

For example, the cost of applying for a private medical treatment visa for a period of more than 6 months remained the same at £200, whilst the cost of applying for a 5 year Hong Kong BN(O) visa remained at £250.

Employers applying for a sponsor licence also avoided a fee increase, with the Home Office fee for both a worker sponsor licence application and a temporary worker sponsor licence application remaining at £536 for a small sponsor and £1,476 for a large sponsor.

That said, it was not all good news for employers, as the cost of allocating a certificate of sponsorship increased by between 19% and 20%.

UK Visa & Immigration Application Fees 2024

The tables below set out the UK visa application fees for all visa and immigration applications submitted in 2024 (updated 10 April 2024).  The tables include application fees for the following immigration categories:

  • Short Stay Visit Visas

  • Short Term Work Visas
  • Business Visas
  • Business Mobility Visas
  • Global Talent Visas
  • Student & Graduate Visas
  • Hong Kong BN(O) Visas
  • British Citizenship

The majority of UK visa applicants will also be required to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) on top of their UK visa application fee.

Some, but not all, employers who recruit foreign workers may also be required to pay an Immigration Skills Charge .

What travelers should know about the UK's new entry fee

Sasha Brady

The UK is introducing a pre-travel authorization system © Getty Images

If you have plans to travel to any country within the UK ( England , Scotland , Wales or Northern Ireland ), you'll need to pay an entry fee starting in 2024.

The new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) , as it's called, will cost about £10 ($12.50 )  and will be fully implemented at the end of 2024 as the UK continues to digitalize its border control systems. The ETA will require some visitors to apply for an electronic pass to enter the UK for tourism, short-term business, transit and other common travel purposes.

Close up shot of a mid adult woman holding her travel documents, passport and sunglasses in the airport

It's a completely electronic system, based on the  United States' ESTA system , so you won't have to get bogged down on paperwork. Just as British travelers need to sign up for ESTA online before entering the US, Americans will likely be required to do the same for travel to the UK.

So, how will the ETA work when it's implemented? It's not yet clear exactly what screening criteria will be used to grant an ETA but passengers will more than likely be asked to register passport information and answer a series of security questions online to determine eligibility.

Assuming you are successful, you will be issued with a pass which, combined with your passport, entitles you to visit the UK for a specific period.

Do you need a visa to go to the United Kingdom?

Here's what we know so far.

Who will need an ETA to enter the UK?

According to the government, the ETA applies to people who are eligible to travel to the UK without a visa. So that is anyone arriving for tourism purposes, visiting family or friends, or traveling to the UK for business or study for up to six months. It also applies to people eligible for the Creative Worker visa concession  and anyone transiting through the UK .

The UK is rolling out the new system in phases. Starting November 15, it will apply to visitors from Qatar. Then from February 22, 2024, it will be extended to citizens from Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The UK government has not listed additional countries included in the scheme but it is expected to be applied to all foreign visitors who currently have visa-free access to the UK, such as European Union citizens and people from the US, Australia, Hong Kong, Brazil, Argentina, Israel, South Korea, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore and more before the end of 2024.

Irish citizens are excluded from the ETA requirement due to the Common Travel Agreement between the UK and Ireland.

Is the ETA a visa?

No. Nationals from some countries will still be required to apply for a visa and visa applications will continue to operate as before. The ETA is a pre-authorization system for travel that will apply to people from countries that currently have visa-free travel agreements with the UK.

"The scheme will give the UK more control of our borders, allowing us to block threats from entering the UK while also providing individuals and carriers with more assurance at an earlier point in time about their ability to travel to the UK," the government stated.

How much will it cost to apply?

It will cost £10 to apply, which works out to about $12.50 or €8.50.

How soon before traveling should I apply for my ETA?

The ETA will take up to 72 hours to be approved. ETAs will be valid for visa-free travel for up to six months in the UK.

How long will my ETA be valid for?

Two years — so you'll need to reapply every two years for renewed access to the UK or whenever your passport expires.

Will my ETA grant me access to European countries?

No, the ETA is valid for entry to the UK only. If you are a non-EU citizen and you're eligible to visit the European Schengen Zone without a visa for a short-term stay, you'll soon need to apply for a similar permit. That's called an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) and it is expected to be rolled out early next year. That one will cost about €7 (or $7.50). As the UK is no longer part of the EU, British travelers will also have to apply for an ETIAS to travel to much of Europe when the new system is in place.

  • for tourism, for example on a holiday or vacation
  • to see your family or friends
  • to volunteer for up to 30 days with a registered charity
  • to pass through the UK to another country (‘in transit’)
  • for certain business activities , for example attending a meeting or interview
  • for certain paid engagements or events (a ‘permitted paid engagement’) as an expert in your profession, for example to give lectures or perform
  • to take part in a school exchange programme
  • to do a recreational course of up to 30 days, for example a dance course
  • to study, do a placement or take an exam
  • as an academic, senior doctor or dentist
  • for medical reasons

You cannot:

  • do paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person, unless you’re doing a permitted paid engagement or event
  • claim public funds (benefits)
  • live in the UK for long periods of time through frequent or successive visits
  • marry or register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership - you’ll need to apply for a Marriage Visitor visa

Check you meet the eligibility requirements

You must have a passport or travel document to enter the UK. It should be valid for the whole of your stay.

You must be able to show that:

  • you’ll leave the UK at the end of your visit
  • you’re able to support yourself and your dependants during your trip (or have funding from someone else to support you)
  • you’re able to pay for your return or onward journey (or have funding from someone else to pay for the journey)
  • you’ll not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits, or make the UK your main home

You may need to meet extra eligibility requirements if you’re visiting the UK:

  • for a permitted paid engagement

The rules on what you’ll need to enter the UK may be different if you’re travelling from Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man .

Check if you need a visa to visit the UK

Depending on your nationality, you’ll either:

  • have to apply for a Standard Visitor visa before you travel to the UK
  • be able to visit the UK for up to 6 months without needing a visa

You can check if you need a visa before you apply.

If you do not need a visa, you must still meet the Standard Visitor eligibility requirements to visit the UK. You may be asked questions at the UK border about your eligibility and the activities you plan to do.

If you’ve previously been refused entry to the UK or have a criminal record, you may want to apply for a Standard Visitor visa (even if you do not need one).

If you have to apply for a Standard Visitor visa

You must apply for a Standard Visitor visa online before you travel to the UK.

A Standard Visitor visa costs £115 for up to 6 months. The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel.

If you visit the UK regularly, you can choose to apply for a long-term Standard Visitor visa instead.

You can pass through the UK to another country on a Standard Visitor visa. If transiting is your only reason for coming to the UK, you can apply for a Visitor in Transit visa instead for £64.
