Will van sambeek's 1969 logo for holland america line..

Concorde made its maiden test flight in 1969 , taking commercial air travel super-sonic. The technical developments in air travel had sunk the traditional role of passenger boats. For those that had time and money, cruises became a luxury experience, leaving the rest as cargo and container ships servicing international trade. Corporations with fleets diversified and expanded into both to safeguard their interests under quickly evolving market conditions.

The golden era of transatlantic passenger ships had ended, and in 1969, faced with this and substantial consumer changes in taste, Holland America Line commissioned Dutch designer Will Van Sambeek to develop a new logo and corporate image to better position them for the future.

Brand Book, Holland America Line, Will Van Sambeek

The intention of the design programme undertaken by Sambeek and his team was three-fold; to visually integrate various divisions of the company into a single corporate entity with a strong identity; to create a new corporate face for the company that could be easily identified by shippers, consignors and passengers; and to ‘assure tourists of a modern and luxurious cruise line experience’.

As part of the development of the new corporate image was the design of a logo. ‘Many sketches were made and discarded before the final one was accepted, with attention given to the usefulness of the new logo and its capacity to be applied at any size and by any means of production.

The final design is made up of several elements which are connected to the activities of Holland America Line and its brand image. The three horizontal lines, which curve into opposing points either end intended to give the impression of water and movement, of an ‘experience’, of ‘going places’ and of being modern and ‘streamline’.

The overall effect of the logo, rather than being specific, was to eliminate the need to represent various divisions of the company with different symbols, and make it easier to use and identify with whilst also being free from specific connotations understood by only a few.

Supporting the logo was Univers Extra Bold and Medium. This was used throughout as the primary typefaces. Univers was described at the time as being ‘the new pace setter in the printing world’, selected because it was ‘clear and easy to read’ and that it ‘never looks bunched or heavy, even in very small print.’ Finally, ‘unlike many type faces’ it was said that this one has ‘gone modern at no expense to legibility.’

Sambeek's design of the in-house stationery and literature, which included letterheads, envelopes and annual reports, was done in a fashion that was ‘neat and simple’ with passengers and sales promotion materials aimed at building a luxurious and pleasant image. Blue-green was selected for the corporate colour for its obvious association with the sea, and was used in combination with a black, amplifying the flag-like qualities of the logo.

In 1989 , the Holland America Line was purchased by Carnival Corp. which saw it entirely owned by an American company. Although the brand remained, its corporate image was redesigned to reflect this change and the modernist logo designed by Will Van Sambeek was replaced.

Holland America Rolls Out New Brand Campaign

  • January 21, 2016

holland america cruises logo

Holland America Line is evolving its image with a new brand campaign that introduces a refreshed logo, new advertising campaign and new tag line that invites guests to “Savor the Journey,” said the company in a statement.

The updated blue and white logo is still classic, but simpler and forward looking, according to a press release.

“‘Savor the Journey’ is all-encompassing and tells the story of today’s Holland America Line cruise experience, from our breadth of destinations to our classic style, gracious service, impeccable cuisine and onboard entertainment and enrichment programs,” said Orlando Ashford, Holland America Line’s president. “Our goal is to marry how we present the brand with what motivates our guests to travel today. That theme carries through to the logo, advertising, marketing collateral, partnerships and other enhancements.

“Holland America Line is evolving, and we are certain that travel professionals are taking notice and will appreciate our extensive efforts to drive cruise business,” added Ashford.  “We are committed to the agent community and all advertising directs consumers to contact a travel professional.”

In addition to the logo and tagline, Holland America Line is introducing new advertising efforts that include both local-market and national television commercials — a first for the cruise line in several years.

The 30-second television commercial takes viewers on a visual journey through the sights and sounds of a Holland America Line cruise. From the memorable adventures shore side in ports around the world to the elegant onboard ambiance that the brand is known for, viewers will become immersed in the Holland America Line experience.

Television ads and radio spots will run through late March in Boston, Mass.; Chicago, Ill.; Denver, Colo.; Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco, Calif.; New York, N.Y.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Portland, Ore.; Seattle, Wash.; and Washington, D.C.  Some national television placements and exposure helped kick off the campaign. Viewers can look for the commercials during a variety of shows including “Today,” “The Voice,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Saturday Night Live” and “60 Minutes,” as well as during other programming on networks including HGTV, History, Bravo, Golf Channel, MSNBC, USA Network and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).

“We haven’t had a broadcast campaign to this extent in many years, so it’s exciting to see the brand taking steps to increase awareness and spread the word that if you want to see the world in the most enriching way possible, Holland America Line is the company to take you there,” Ashford added.

HAL Logo - History?

Since I'm sailing HAL again, I'm curious about whether there is any history or meaning behind the logo. I know Royal Caribbean has their crown & anchor to denote "royal" ships, Celebrity has the X to honor Chandris cruiselines, Princess has their sea nymph, and Carnival has their "whale tail" (which I personally think they should change considering the slang meaning).

I first noticed the HAL logo when I was on an Alaska cruise. Rotterdam (I think, might have been Ryndam) was in the berth next to us in Skagway. I remember thinking the logo was really pompous - a large ship appearing to be running over a smaller sail boat.

Is there some meaning behind the logo or is it simply a big ship running over a smaller boat?

Many would say a perfectly appropriate logo for Carnival, especially during Spring Break. :p

All right, you trivia buffs:

Normally on the HAL Logo, the ships face towards the right, i.e. you see the starboard sides of the ships. But there is one place on each HAL ship where the logo is reversed, i.e. the ships face towards the left, so that you see their port sides. Where is this place?

I have absolutely, positively, no idea... but I can't wait for the answer!

I think logos are interesting. They all have a little bit of history and backgorund to them. Since we started the conversation, how about this:

HAL: As poined out, it is not designed to be pompous - it is the juxtaposition of the Half Moon ("Halve Maen" in Dutch) and the Nieuw Amsterdam of 1938. Being a resident of the Hudson River Valley in New York (the river is only down the hill from my house), I like the link. Half Moon was Henry Hudson's ship that first explored the Hudson River for the Dutch East India Company. This logo was dervied from a mid-20th centruy HAL poster (and luggage tags). The logo didn't come into use on the funnels of HAL ships until the late 1980s. In essence, the logo represents the old and new worlds and the connection between the Netherlands and the United States.

Carnval: The "whale-tail." That's an interesting take! Never thought of it that way, but I can see why ;) . The design is really two-fold. First, the colors - red, white, and blue - represents the colors of the United States, where Carnival got its start and hoped to make a small dent in the cruising world in 1972. I think we can agree they did a little more than small! The pattern came about as a an easy paint-job. The striping on the funnels of the original Mardi Gras and Carnivale were identical when they were Canadian Pacific ships - all Carnival had to do was change the colors, but use the same pattern. Hence, the design. The winged-funnel came later, when the Tropicale was built in 1982 - after doing tests, they decided (aside from looking different) it did a good job of getting smoke away from the ship. Every Carnival ship since has had a similar funnel. Only the originnal three (and long-gone) Mardi Gras, Carnivale, and Festivale had a traditional funnel (same color scheme though).

Celebrity - Yes, the letter X is a nod to Chandris, the shipping company (and family name) that founded it. X is the Greek letter Chi, or "Ch". All Chandris ships always had a blue funnel with black top and a white X. The white horizontal striping came with Celebrity.

Royal Caribbean - the Crown and Anchor. What else can you say? In use since 1969 (the founding year) with only minor modification over the years. Instantly recognizable.

Princess - the Sea Witch. First came into use in 1968. Stanley McDonald (the founder of Princess Cruises) commissioned the design. They reportedly paid $50,000 for it. Wow. It's an icon now. She's changed a bit over the years. The original design (known by most form the Love Boat days) was both blue and green - her face had an eye, and even a bit of a smile. Her hair tended to flow a little longer. By the 1980s, the logo changed a little bit - the hair doesn't flow as long and her eye is missing - it is more of a profile. And the color went all blue. On the older Princess ships (all gone now), they kept the original sea witch - just painted it all blue, and whited-out the eye. The original logo seemed a little more streamlined to me than the current one. As mentioned above (about the HAL funnels), you will only see the sea witch with her hair flowing from right to left on the starboard side of Princess funnels (looks like it is flowing in the breeze made by the ship's forward movement). The port side contains the official logo - hair blowing from left to right.

I hit the wrong key..

I meant to say....

Wow, I want you on my next Trivia Team. You are awsome.

Exactly right.

Logo's and flags are interesting. I remember sailing on the original 'love boat', the Pacific Princess in 1991, and remember besides the Sea Witch as mentioned, the bow of the ship had that "Sun God" logo, and the house flag was of the at the time parent P&O as well has the cap badges of the officer's uniforms. I like the classic Cunard Lines logo with the crown over the lion holding the globe framed by the leaves.

The big "C" on the round Costa funnels is instantly recognizable.

And what a better choice for Disney than Mickey Mouse.

And the list goes on.....

Ah, yes. The bow badge. Not all ships sport them, unfortunately. The one you described on Pacific Princess is the "Rising Sun" of P&O. Most of the current Princess ships and all of the current P&O ships sport that particular badge.

As you also pointed out, the officer's cap badges also had the P&O flag. When Carnival bought P&O Princess, and Princess was technically not owned by P&O but rather a "partner" company, the P&O house flag (and the "P&O" letters) disappeared from the Princess ships. Fortunately, the bow badges and officer cap badges remain - a nice touch and connection to Princess's pedigree. Likewise, Princess is now responsible for Cunard's marine operations, and many officers and captains have gone back and forth between Princess, P&O and Cunard, but Cunard retained their own uniforms/cap badges as well. Thank goodness for the tradtion, no matter what the ship/line!

Interesting. Now that P&O doesn't exist any longer as a freight carrier (I believe it has been absorbed by giant Maersk), I wonder if the container ship officers still wear P&O badges?

And perhaps on the P&O ferries, which I believe still exists as a separate entity?

Topsham

Carnval: Tstriping on the funnels of the original Mardi Gras and Carnivale were identical when they were Canadian Pacific ships - all Carnival had to do was change the colors, but use the same pattern. .

I hope you didn't bet any money on this! If you were playing Jeopardy you would out of pocket.

The Carnival logo 'design' is an adaption of the old Canadian Pacific 'design'. They are of course completely different in terms of colour.

The CP funnel design was a pale green forward part of the funnel and a daarker blue/green on the after side. The dividing line was white. The forward part of the white stripe is a curve but the after sside of the stripe was, for use of a better word, triangular.... representing the 'C' for Canadian Pacific and the triangle representing 'forward direction'.

When Carnival purchased the MARDI GRAS the forward part of the funnel was painted in their distinctive red and the after part was painted in their distinctive dark blue. The white stripe... the forward part of teh curve was retaained but teh triangle was removed and a second curve was painted close to the forward curve creating a thin 'C' as in 'Carnival'.

Too bad, so close, but no prize... this time!!!!;)

Fortunately, the bow badges and officer cap badges remain - a nice touch and connection to Princess's pedigree. !

Hi Ships..... me again...:o

P&O have nothing to do with Princess "pedigree"!! The company was formed in 1966 and was not acquired by P&O until 1974. And I know that you know that!

The current P&O cap badge... the flag with gold anchor is relatively new. The 'real' P&O cap badge was the rising sun logo above a gold anchor.

Topsham - thanks for the interesting info on Carnival. So close yet...

As far as Princess goes, yes I did know that (actually 1965, not 1966 though, right?). What I meant, of course, was that Princess didn't have a unifying identity with their ships - they were all charters - one Canadian (Princess Patricia), two Italian (Italia and Carla C) and one Norwegian (Island Princess) - with the officers to match. When P&O took over in 1974and Italia was returned, with the other two previoulsy gone, Island Princess was re-flagged to the Red Duster and became "P&O-like" as far as marine operations were concerned (ie British officers from P&O). Of course Spirit of London (Sun Princess) and Sea Venture (Pacific Princess) were likewise. So while not part of their original pedigree, certainly for most of its history (and, I would argue, the most critical point in its history) and the most familiar to current passengers. Until the purchase of Sitmar in 1988, the only Italians on Princess were in the dining room! Now they may be the Captain, Chief Technical Officer, or any officer in between! But, the P&O cap badge remains! I think the current cap badge came into use in the early 1970s, prior to the purchase of Princess.

I am fascinated with transportation history in general, and this discussion is very enjoyable. I wonder if their is a single web site that would show the cap badges of all, or at least a good sampling of cruise lines?

Take a prize for all that!

I take pedigree to mean from the birth parents, P&O are just the step-parents of Princess.;)

But you are right. Princess as we know it is very much a child of P&O... and I'm thankful for the Sitmar influence.

Holland America’s Mariner Society loyalty program: Everything you need to know

Gene Sloan

Among major cruise lines, Holland America has one of the most intriguing loyalty programs.

Like most cruise line loyalty programs, Holland America's Mariner Society, as it's called, lets you earn points and build up status by spending days at sea on its ships. But it also lets you earn points and build up status by spending money on board its vessels.

That latter piece of the program is unusual in the cruise space, and it means that you can reach high-level tiers of the program relatively quickly — at least if you're a big onboard spender.

Holland America's Mariner Society loyalty program also offers a lot of great perks to higher-tier members. These include big discounts on specialty dining charges and drinks-related charges, as well as free passage for children sailing with you on select sailings.

Ways to earn points

The Mariner Society point-earning system is relatively simple. In most cases, you will earn one "cruise day" credit for every night you're on a ship.

The only exception is for passengers staying in top accommodations. Customers staying in a suite or penthouse on a Holland America ship will get double cruise day credits. One caveat here is that you must have paid the normal fare for the suite or penthouse to get the double credits.

You won't get double credit if you're staying in a suite or penthouse due to a complimentary cabin upgrade.

Note that you will get cruise day credits not just for nights that you spend on Holland America ships, but also for days you spend touring on land when on Holland America cruisetours in Alaska. Holland America cruisetours in Alaska typically combine a seven-night Alaska cruise with a few days touring the state by land in motorcoaches or by train.

Related: The 4 classes of Holland America ships, explained

In addition, as noted above, there is an unusual bonus way to earn Holland America Mariner Society cruise day credits. You can earn one additional cruise day credit for every $300 you spend onboard a ship for such things as shore excursions and shop purchases (with a limit of one extra cruise day credit for every day you sail).

The extra credit is calculated based on the combined folio charges for all passengers on a single booking, regardless of who signs each charge and who pays the bill. Only the first two passengers on a booking will receive the bonus credit.

Some purchases — future cruise deposits, cash advances and casino charges — are excluded from the onboard purchase bonus. But all other onboard purchases count — even the hotel service charges, beverage service charges and taxes that show up on final bills.

One caveat: Holland America cruises booked as charter cruises only will earn you cruise day credits when you're booked in a suite.

Program tiers and benefits

There are five tiers to the Holland America Mariner Society loyalty program:

  • Star Mariner (after one cruise)
  • 2-Star Mariner (30 to 74 cruise day credits)
  • 3-Star Mariner (75 to 199 cruise day credits)
  • 4-Star Mariner (200 to 499 cruise day credits)
  • 5-Star Mariner (500-plus cruise day credits)

As is typical for cruise line loyalty programs, the first tier of the Mariner Society loyalty program (Star Mariner) doesn't come with all that many valuable perks.

Star Mariners receive:

  • Up to $400 per cabin onboard spending credit when booking a cruise within 90 days of a new season launch
  • 15% discount at shophollandamerica.com
  • A special welcome lunch
  • An onboard gift
  • A voucher for an onboard cocktail
  • A 50% discount on cruise fares for kids and extra guests in your cabin on select sailings

In addition to all the above, the big add-on for 2-Star Mariners is discounts on Holland America-branded items. Loyal Holland America cruisers at the 2-Star level will get a 10% discount on select Holland America clothing sold on ships. They also receive a complimentary photo of their ship.

Related: A beginner's guide to cruise line loyalty programs

holland america cruises logo

The 3-Star Mariner level adds a perk that we really love: A 25% discount on specialty restaurant surcharges and on specialty coffees in various venues, Sommelier Suites packages and all minibar purchases. This amounts to real money savings in your pocket.

One caveat on the specialty restaurant discount: It doesn't apply to already discounted dining packages and some special dinners, such as the Cellar Master's Dinner.

The 3-Star Mariner level also brings discounts on select treatments from shipboard Greenhouse Spa & Salon venues.

Moving up through these first three tiers is relatively easy. As noted, reaching the initial Star Mariner tier requires completing just one cruise. Depending on how much money you spend on the ship during your first few sailings (which will affect your bonus-credit haul) and whether you stay in a suite or not, you could reach the 2-Star Mariner level after just two to four seven-night cruises.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Holland America ship

Hitting the 3-Star Mariner level might take five to nine seven-night cruises, depending on your onboard spend and the type of cabins you book. However, if you sign up for one or two of Holland America's longer voyages, you could reach the 3-Star level far sooner.

The elite level that makes a difference

The sweet spot in Holland America's program is the 4-Star Mariner status level. This is where you really start to see some great perks, including:

  • Complimentary cruise fare for kids and extra guests staying in your cabin on select sailings
  • A 50% discount on specialty restaurant surcharges and specialty coffees in dining venues, Sommelier Suites packages and all minibar purchases
  • Complimentary laundry and pressing services
  • Priority access to ship-to-shore tenders
  • Priority check-in
  • A complimentary James Suckling regional wine tasting
  • A 15% discount on select Holland America Line logo clothing sold in onboard shops (may exclude already discounted merchandise)
  • A 25% discount off the $49-per-person surcharge in Rudi's Sel De Mer eatery

We love that Holland America will let kids sail free on select sailings at this tier. The line isn't necessarily known as a family line. However, if you have kids and you're a Holland America fan, this could save you a lot of money.

You'll also save a lot of money with the 50%-off specialty restaurant perk at this level and the other 50%-off discount options.

Related: Holland America ships ranked from newest to oldest

holland america cruises logo

We're also thrilled about the complimentary laundry and pressing services at this tier level. A number of other lines offer complimentary laundry services as a loyalty plan perk, but often not until their top tier.

Reaching the 4-Star Mariner level may seem daunting, as it requires 200 cruise day credits. Keep in mind, however, that you'll be earning credits for onboard spending, plus double credits if you stay in a suite. If you max out all the possibilities, you could reach the 4-Star Mariner level in just 10 seven-night cruises. If you take a few longer voyages, you could be sipping wine at a complimentary wine tasting on every voyage even sooner.

Related: The ultimate guide to Holland America cabins and suites

Best elite perk

If you cruise with family or friends, we think the best perk in Holland America's program is the complimentary cruise fare for kids and extra guests staying in your cabin on select sailings. As noted above, this is a 4-Star Mariner perk that also carries over to 5-Star Mariners.

We should mention that all Mariner Society members get discounts of some sort for the third- and fourth- passengers staying in their cabins. During the booking process, type in your Mariner ID to view your discount for this.

Note that at the 5-Star Mariner level, loyal fans of the line also get:

  • Up to a $30 credit toward an internet package
  • Two complimentary dinners in one of the following onboard restaurants: Pinnacle Grill, Tamarind or Canaletto (free surcharge only)
  • A complimentary daypass to the Greenhouse Spa & Salon (one per cruise)

Bear in mind that, as is often the case with cruise line loyalty programs, Holland America customers do not have to requalify for status each year. Mariner Society members keep their points at the end of each year and continue to accrue points indefinitely. That means someone who hits 5-Star Mariner status will remain at that top-tier level forever (or until Holland America makes a change to the program).

Related: Every Holland America ship ranked from biggest to smallest

Such "forever status" is one of the great allures of cruise line frequent cruiser programs. Many airline frequent flyer programs, by contrast, require loyalty members to requalify for status each year.

Mariner Society lapel pins

Holland America has awarded its most loyal guests special lapel pin "medallions" in the past and continues that practice today. Sail 100 days and get a Bronze Medallion. Cruisers with 300 days at sea get a Silver Medallion, and those with 500 days earn a Gold Medallion. The Platinum Medallion is reserved for cruisers who have enjoyed 700 or more nights at sea. For pin tiers, cruise days are the only thing that counts.

Bottom line

Holland America has a very solid loyalty program. Unlike Royal Caribbean or Norwegian Cruise Line , it doesn't offer its loyalty club members a free cruise after reaching the top tier of the program. Nor does it offer its members across-the-board discounts on shore excursions and beverage packages , such as Windstar Cruises does.

However, some of its perks at higher levels offer a lot of value. We are particularly fond of the 50% discounts on specialty restaurant charges and some other drinks-related charges that come with 4-Star and 5-Star Mariner status.
