You probably feel an overwhelming curiosity about what it is like to land on top of a glacier in the middle of nowhere or what a hundred-meter-tall waterfall looks like from above. Perhaps you have even caught yourself wondering how long it would take to fly over the largest lava field on the planet.
If you have come down with a case of helicopter wanderlust, you probably spend a lot of time imagining what the rifts between the continents and freshly formed steaming lava fields look like from a bird’s eye view.
If these symptoms sound familiar, it is time to make your dream come true. There is no better place to go on a helicopter tour than Iceland! Find out all there is to know about our tours below.

WHAT ARE THE BEST HELICOPTER TOUR OPTIONS IN ICELAND?
There are plenty of options available for those who wish to explore Iceland from above. The lengths of our helicopter tours range anywhere between 20 minutes and 7 hours, meaning you’re sure to fit one in no matter how long you’re spending on the island. Choices include the shorter and cheaper Reykjavík helicopter sightseeing tours, the somewhat longer geothermal and glacier landing tours, as well as the half-day and day-long extended superior tours and expeditions that take you to Iceland’s most thrilling natural attractions with several landings.
Helicopter Tours over Reykjavík (20-50 minutes) :
You can explore the vibrantly colorful cityscape of Reykjavík, the world’s northernmost capital, from the air with just a short tour. Reykjavík sits on a small peninsula and is surrounded by wondrous scenery that provides an idyllic backdrop to this peaceful little town.
Fire and Ice Tours: Volcanoes, Geothermal sites and glaciers (1-3 hours):
The land of fire and ice is full of contrasts. From above you will have the best perspective from which to admire the extremities as they coexist.
Geothermal steam on the side of a volcano in Iceland
Steam rising up from a geothermal site in the middle of a glacier. Black lava flows stretch over the colorful landscape. A vibrantly green mountain towering in the middle of the black desert and hot springs bubbling in a snowfield. Seeing all of these extraordinary natural phenomena from a helicopter is something that everybody dreams of!
Essential Iceland Tours: All of Iceland’s best natural wonders (4-7 hours):
Iceland may be a small country, but there is so much to see! If traveling by car, visiting the most beautiful highlights could easily take many days. Meanwhile, in a helicopter, you can travel over a vast area in a short amount of time, allowing all of the most attractive sights to fit in just one exhilarating tour. You’ll skip the traffic and get the best views of some of those attractions at the top of your bucket list!
Passenger admiring the views of Iceland from inside a helicopter
This is not only the most time-effective way of exploring Iceland but also ensures the most mind-blowing views and the greatest adrenaline boost whilst you sit comfortably and glide through the air.
You can also access areas that are unreachable from the ground, such as over volcanoes or the most deserted parts of the Highlands. The absolute superior experience of leaving the crowds and the beaten roads behind will definitely leave you speechless!
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW BEFORE BOOKING A HELICOPTER TOUR IN ICELAND?
If you’re new to helicopter tours, Iceland, or both, here’s everything you need to know.
You may be wondering if there is a chance of seeing a volcanic eruption in Iceland. At the time of writing (May 2023), there are no erupting volcanoes in Iceland. We do, however, have eruptions every 4-5 years on average, with several volcanoes due to erupt at any time.
Lava bursting out of an open fissure in Iceland
The most recent volcanic eruption occurred in the Reykjanes peninsula in August of 2022, which visitors flocked to visit by air and foot. There are helicopter tours that take you to these freshly formed, still steaming, hot lava fields.
Eruptions are unpredictable, and there can be no guarantees that you’ll see a live volcano on your visit. When the next eruption does happen, we will keep you updated on our blog and social media pages ( Facebook , Instagram , Twitter ). So stay tuned!
The Weather
The weather in Iceland is notoriously unstable. Helicopter tours may get canceled for poor visibility due to dense fog or low clouds, which is for your safety and in your best interest. Extremely gusty winds, heavy rain, or snow can disrupt our plans as well.
A snowy Iceland from above
However, the temperature has no effect on flight conditions as helicopters are equipped with both heating and air conditioning. The light rain that does not affect visibility is not a problem either.
Tour Departures
There are no scheduled departure times in general. To find the departure time for the day of your tour, we will contact you shortly after you book. The helicopter tours depart from the domestic airport in Reykjavík. The airport is located a few minutes by car from the downtown area.
WHAT TO WEAR ON A HELICOPTER TOUR IN ICELAND
Dressing warmly is quite important when joining a helicopter tour. The need for warm clothing isn’t just because you might get cold during the stops, but also because you might get cold during the ride. The majority of the helicopter’s passenger area is made from glass to increase the quality of your experience and to make the views that much more amazing. But the downside to this is that the internal heating isn’t as effective in those areas. When dressing keep in mind: layers, layers, layers - and then just enjoy the ride!
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY HELICOPTER TOUR IS CANCELED?
As weather conditions are beyond our control, some flexibility is required when booking a helicopter tour. If the conditions are poor and your flight is canceled, you can either request a full refund or reschedule your flight for another day at no additional cost.

This is the tour we did, and it began at Reykjavík National Airport, which is just 1.2 miles from the capital. After enjoying the views of the city, you’ll soar over lava fields, craters, and some of the country’s main power plants. Icelanders are especially proud of these plants, as they harness geothermal power to generate clean energy.

The Fagradalsfjall volcano erupted in March 2021 and although experts say that the volcano will remain active for a long time, I recommend booking this tour if you’re going to be in Iceland soon. Flying over this volcanic eruption will be a unique experience that you won’t want to pass up!
This helicopter ride over an Icelandic volcano departs from Reykjavík National Airport, so you’ll start the tour with beautiful views of the capital city. Keep an eye out for famous sights like the Hallgrímskirkja church and the Harpa Concert Hall.
Then, you’ll fly to the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the landscape transforms into a geothermal wonderland. If you go when the volcano is highly active, you may see rivers of molten rock and fire spouting from the craters.
Without a doubt, it’s an impressive scene that you’re not likely to see anywhere else, so it’s one of the most worthwhile helicopter tours in Iceland .

During this Reykjavík helicopter tour , you’ll fly over some of the most iconic places to visit in Reykjavík , such as the Hallgrímskirkja church, the Harpa Concert Hall, and the Old Harbour, among others. Then, you’ll land on one of the nearby mountains and get an amazing view of the surrounding Icelandic landscapes with the capital in the background.

Then, you’ll land on one of the most iconic peaks in the city, where you can take in the majestic views.
After enjoying a helicopter flight over Iceland ’s capital city, you’ll have the option of getting picked up at the airport hotel or going to Reykjavík’s Old Harbour to take one of the best whale watching tours in Iceland .

5. Volcanic Craters Tour, the best helicopter tour over Iceland’s volcanoes
One of the most characteristic features of Iceland is the volcanic landscape. The country has about 130 volcanoes scattered throughout the island, so if you’re looking for an Icelandic volcano helicopter tour , I can’t recommend the Volcanic Craters tour enough!
The excursion begins at the Reykjavík National Airport, so you can see the urban center of the capital before enjoying the natural landscapes that surround it.
Your tour will focus on the volcanic areas around Reykjavík and the Reykjanes coast, so you’ll see the Kleifarvatn and Grænavatn lakes, the Gunnuhver hot spring, and the famous Blue Lagoon from the air. 7. Helicopter Ride & Volcano Tour, another breathtaking helicopter tour of Iceland
The Helicopter Ride & Volcano tour is another Iceland volcano helicopter tour that I highly recommend since it’s one of the few opportunities you have to go inside a volcano, specifically Þríhnúkagígur.
You can choose from a morning or afternoon tour, and you’ll depart from the Reykjavík National Airport. After flying over the city and its famous attractions like the Hallgrímskirkja church, you’ll head towards the Blue Mountains and the Þríhnúkagígur volcano.
It’s an inactive volcano, so visitors can safely go inside. All the necessary safety equipment will be provided, so you can explore the interior of the volcano without any risks.
I can assure you that witnessing the colors and shapes of the volcano’s interior is an incredible experience, so don’t forget your camera! This is one volcanic helicopter tour in Iceland that you won’t want to miss!

What is the price of an Iceland helicopter tour?
As you may have already guessed, taking a helicopter over Iceland isn’t exactly the cheapest activity. That said, tours vary in terms of duration and attractions covered, so the cost can vary quite a bit. To help you choose the best tour for your budget, here is a comparison chart of Iceland helicopter tour prices :
My experience flying over Iceland
While we had photographed the island countless times, taking a helicopter tour over Iceland opened up a whole new world of possibilities for us. Even though it was a short tour, I know that we’ll do it again as soon as we have the chance.
During our Iceland volcano helicopter tour , we were able to see places we wouldn’t have otherwise seen, and at the same time, we enjoyed some completely new perspectives of places we have seen a thousand times from the ground. It was incredible getting aerial views of some of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland!
We booked our Iceland heli-tour for the first day of our trip, but the weather conditions weren’t ideal, so we had to postpone the tour for the last day of our visit, about 15 days later. Luckily, the weather was amazing this time, so we got wonderful views. In short, I suggest booking your tour for the beginning of your trip just in case you have to reschedule it.
Moreover, if you book any of the helicopter rides in Iceland that I recommended in this guide, you’ll be in for a treat. The pilot will point out all the important sights and tell you interesting information during the tour. This way, you’ll get the most out of your flight and understand exactly what you’re looking at as you soar over the island.
I recognize that this is an expensive activity, but it’s 100% worth it. So, if you have your heart set on flying over Iceland by helicopter , don’t overthink it!
That’s it from me! I hope you enjoy this stunning country and your helicopter tour of Iceland . If you have any questions, leave me a comment below, and I’ll be happy to help you.
Happy flying!

Up to 2 Hour Tours
Discover the wonders near Reykjavik on our 20 minute to 2 hour tours. From mountain tops to waterfalls, experience the breathtaking beauty of Iceland's landscapes in no time.
Glacier Landing
Start your adventure from the Reykjavik Domestic Airport and head onwards toward Þórisjökull glacier. The landing on this tour is on Þórisjökull glacier, next to Langjökull glacier, and we grant you the chance to set foot on it. Enjoy the almost unrealistic view and the magical feeling of walking on top of a glacier. The glacier itself is covered in snow all year round, so you can take a deep breath of the fresh alpine air, make snow angels, or throw snowballs as far as you possibly can. From the peak of the glacier you can see the distinctive features of the wild highlands of Iceland. We then head off to the shield volcano Skjaldbreiður and fly over its crater (sorry, it is an old volcano crater so no lava will be visible).
Waterfalls & Valleys
The Waterfalls & Valleys tour has three main attractions - the grand Glymur waterfall, the UNESCO World Heritage Site - Þingvellir National Park (both also known from the famous Golden Circle tour), and the Hengill geothermal area where we land. Setting off from the urban views of Reykjavik, we will catch a glimpse of Esja, the mountain just next to the city border. En route we'll see the highest waterfall in Iceland - Glymur. It is a popular hiking area but nothing beats the view you get from a helicopter! Next, the Þingvellir National Park, with its absolutely magical culture and nature. Besides being a sacred place for all Icelandic people, and an important part of the country's history - it is a once in a lifetime experience to see it from the sky. At ground level, it's hard to grasp the idea that two tectonic plates that drifted apart actually created Iceland... that's why we take flight!
Heli – Happy Hour
Have you ever wondered what it is like to fly in a helicopter, to the top of a mountain, to open up a bottle of sparkling wine? Well... this is your chance! This round trip to a nearby mountaintakes in breath-taking views of Reykjavik as you overfly the city. You will see colorful and charming dollhouse roofs, the neighboring towns and the surrounding countryside with extensive lava fields, reminding us of the true volcanic nature of Iceland. After a thrilling helicopter ride we land on one of the summits surrounding the city for the photo opportunity of a life-time.
Countless Craters
Catch a glimpse of the rough but magical beauty Iceland's volcanic landscape is known for. As you soar above the moonlike Reykjanes peninsula you will get to truly appreciate its grandeur - something only possible from air. You will see countless volcanic craters, the unforgiving ocean lining the coast, the Seltún geothermal area, the Blue Lagoon, Lake Kleifarvatn and Lake Grænavatn. Of course no tour would be complete without a landing and time to explore... on this tour we stop at Eldvörp on the Reykjanes Peninsula in the southwest of the island. It is a 10 km long crater row that contains extensive geothermal activity so you will always see steam rising from the earth. This combination of rugged coastline and rising steam will make it feel like you've landed on another planet entirely!
Geothermal Tour
When we fly over one of the most active volcanic areas in Iceland, the Hellisheiði plateau, you’ll see moss covered lava fields stretched out to the horizon, interspersed with colorful basalt mountains, steaming hot springs and the very geothermal power plants that supply Reykjavik it's renewable energy. On this sightseeing tour, we make sure to land off the beaten track and away from the crowds to witness the regions raw energy first-hand. In the landing place of Hengill geothermal area - named after the Hengill volcano - you can witness upfront the untouched Icelandic nature. We bring you close to hot springs and boiling mud pots, and you might even see some sheep wandering around the valley in the summer.
Reykjavik Summit
A short-and-sweet exploration of Reykjavik's vibrant cityscape and the mountains that surround the world’s northernmost capital. As we take off smoothly from the airport, you'll see how quickly the city gets smaller and smaller beneath us, with every turn of the helicopter's wings. Further into the tour we land on a nearby summit where you'll have the chance to capture a silent panorama of the vast blue ocean that hugs the city shore and catch sight of the small islands scattered in the distance.

About Tour - Active Volcano Helicopter Tour from Reykjavik
Departing from Reykjavik, our helicopter tour takes you to the latest eruption site, which began on March 16th, 2024. Witnessing this new natural wonder firsthand is an unforgettable experience and a must-do while in Iceland.
The volcanic activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula began on March 19th, 2021, lasting six months and creating an expansive lava plateau and numerous craters. This was the first eruption in the region since the 14th century, following three weeks of over 50,000 earthquakes.
On August 3rd, 2022, a new eruption added more lava to the existing plateau. The volcanic activity continued with another eruption on July 10th, 2023, further expanding the lava field.
The chain of eruptions intensified on December 18th, 2023, at Sundhnúkahraun, marking the strongest eruption since 2021. Although this event was brief, lasting only three days, it triggered a series of eruptions in early 2024: the second eruption on January 14th, the third on February 8th, and the fourth on March 16th.
During this flight, you will explore the entire eruption area from above, marveling at the vibrant colors and immense craters while enjoying the breathtaking surrounding landscape.
The tour lasts approximately 60 minutes. While we do not land at the eruption site, we ensure an exceptional viewing experience from the air.
Please note that some photos might be from earlier eruptions.

Thrilling 35-Minute New Volcanic Area Helicopter Tour from Reykjavik
Description
Discover a newly-erupted volcano and how it's affecting the surrounding area in this thrilling volcanic area helicopter tour from Reykjavik. This 35-minute adventure takes travelers to an uninhabited area on the Reykjanes peninsula, the birthplace of a new geological wonder.
The action begins when you meet a friendly and expert guide at your Reykjavik accommodation. You'll then head to ACE FBO, where you'll take a helicopter ride toward the new volcano's location, about 19 miles (30 kilometers) from Iceland's capital.
During the flight, you'll see breathtaking landscapes surrounding Reykjavik en route to Reykjanes peninsula. Moreover, you don't need to worry about potential flight disruptions.
As you fly above Reykjanes peninsula, you’ll see its many geothermal wonders. One of the most notable sights is Seltun, which features several geothermal fields. You’ll see pockets of hissing steam coming out of the earth through boiling hot springs and mud baths.
You’ll also see Lake Graenavatn or the Greenlake from above. Check out the lake’s bright-green water that fills an ancient volcanic crater. You’ll also pass by Kleifarvatn, which is the largest lake in Reykjanes peninsula.
As for the newly-formed volcano, it was formed after an eruption on July 10, 2023, in a small depression north of Litli Hrtur. However, there’s a chance of seeing a live volcanic eruption, if you get lucky.
Approaching the volcanic area, you'll notice the volcano's narrow fissure where the hot and steaming lava flowed. The expert guide will explain the volcano's historical dormancy and current assessment. They will also highlight the volcanic eruption in relation to the most significant ones that have happened in the past.
Around a week before this new volcano erupted, thousands of small earthquakes were felt around the area. These quakes were already the signs of the impending eruption. During the eruption, the country's weather office confirmed that the volcano's smoke blew toward the north-westerly direction.
What makes fissure eruptions in Iceland particularly fascinating is their scale and duration. These eruptions can produce vast quantities of lava, covering large land areas and reshaping the landscape over time.
Since the July 2023 eruption, Reykjanes Peninsula saw five more eruptions through May of 2024. Some of these eruptions lasted a day or two while one reached 54 days to finish. As such, there is a good chance you'll see active, flowing lava!
After appreciating the breathtaking volcano, you'll head back to Reykjavik. During the trip back to the city, you'll take a scenic route and fly above some of the capital's most iconic landmarks and other notable attractions.
Don't miss this chance to see a recently formed volcano in all its captivating glory on this 35-minute new volcanic area tour from Reykjavik. Check availability now by choosing a date.

Update: This tour takes you to the most recent volcanic eruption sites at Reykjanes volcano (Fagradalsfjall / Meradalir / Litli-H rútur / Sundhnúkahraun / Reykja nes Peninsula) in Iceland. This eruption was active as follows:
- March – September 2021 (Fagradalsfjall)
- August 2022 (Meradalir)
- July/August 2023 (Litli-Hrútur)
- December 2023 (Sundhnúkur)
- January 2024 (Sundhnúkur)
- February 2024 (Sundhnúkur)
- March 2024 (Sundhnúkur)
- May 2024 (Sundhnúkur)
Activity is subject to change, please consult the Icelandic Weather Office / Volcano page for more information (look for Reykjanes and Fagradalsfjall volcano activity).
Please note that the volcano is a natural phenomena and we can not guarantee bubbling or flowing lava at the time of your tour. This tour runs all-year with and without volcanic activity.
Get the full experience of the after-effects of the eruption from 2021 at Fagradalsfjall (Geldingadalur) from every angle. The eruption is the longest lasting eruption in the 21 st century in Iceland, from March 19 th , 2021 and officially ending on December 18 th that same year. In August 2022 the eruption started again for a few weeks. After thousands of earthquakes throughout June and July 2023, another eruption began on July 10 th 2023. Though there is great controversy amongst scientists if the volcano has stopped or not.
The lava field that was formed during the eruption completely changed the surrounding landscape. It made small mountains and a valley disappear, taller mountains shrink, and new craters appear setting its mark on the terrain. The craters and lava field are still hot and will take years to cool completely. You will see smoke and steam rising from both the big crater and this newly formed lava field. We circle the lava field and explore it from different angles.
The eruption was a very unpredictable event and the volcanos “behaviour” changed throughout the entire eruption. It started with one small crater and ended with five, the last one being the largest that erupted for the longest time. At the time of the eruption, you would see lava flying into the air, bubbling within the crater, as well as flowing streams of lava.
Please note there is no landing at the eruption site but sightseeing from the air with a great view into the crater and surrounding lava fields. This will give you the best viewing experience.
We feel the way to get the best view is sightseeing from the air onboard our helicopter. We operate helicopters with great visibility for all our guests ( max. 4 passengers per flight = 4 seats means it is automatically a private tour ).
