What Our Guests Are Saying

logo

Exploring so many landmarks and learning about their history on a sunny day was brilliant. Francesco gave us a great tour with his very detailed knowledge and smooth navigation through the town, highly recommended.

"I would definitely recommend this tour. Maria, our tour guide was really great! She was very friendly and more than willing to take any pictures that we asked for. She told a lot of funny stories and was more than willing to answer any questions that we had about university life at Cambridge in general. Thank you Maria, you were the highlight of our day in Cambridge!"

"Although I and my wife have been to Cambridge many times, we took this tour with Laura to get an insight on how it is to live and learn in Cambridge. As a recent graduate, Laura was able to go beyond the "facts and dates" and give a viewpoint of someone who spent 3 years living, working and learning in Cambridge. Excellent tour guide who made the 90 minutes fly by."

"Jess was brilliant, funny, and witty. She was very knowledgeable about so much of the university. She studied at the university before becoming a professor of Latin there. She showed us lots of little hideouts that have a great history which most of the tourist swarms don’t come close to. She was very patient and moved at the group’s pace and answered any questions."

Francesco was an incredible guide, and the whole experience was so worth it! The tour was filled with amazing history, fun trivia, and even myths and legends that have circulated the university for hundreds of years. It's very obvious that the tour company (and Francesco) have put in a lot of effort to make sure the experience is educational and engaging. Also, Francesco kept his mask on the entire tour which we appreciated, and the group was kept small (only 6 of us total), which gave us the ability to keep our own boundaries as needed. Thanks so much, would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Cambridge for the day!

Excellent day on my birthday. We did the walking tour with Joshua who is a great communicator extremely well prepared. We were just 3 of us and there was also another student that was doing her training...so we had also another guide. Joshua suggested also a great place for a quick lunch (Bread & Meat) which I am going to review as well with 5 stars. It was the perfect day also for the punting which we did in the same boat with another couple, and that was very good as well, as it offers a great perspective of the most famous colleges. I would like to mention also the great service from Eren, the manager of Cambridge Alumni Tours. A superb experience all-round at a fair price.

A Charming Walking Tour of Cambridge UK (with map)

Cambridge visitors punting on Cam River

Cambridge is a beautiful city to visit, especially since it is so easy to come here from London. The historical Cambridge University with its many colleges and traditions form a unique vibe in this college city. Come along with me on a beautiful walking tour of Cambridge UK.

Ever since we lived in Cambridge for an entire month, the city has become our favorite day trip from London . We found spring time in Cambridge to be absolutely gorgeous with all the flowers and trees blooming. So, come along with me on my favorite walking tour of Cambridge UK .

In this article:

Favorite Places on My Walking Tour of Cambridge UK

Is Cambridge UK walkable? Oh yes, very much so. Actually, walking is the best way to experience Cambridge.

  • Cambridge historical colleges form the main attraction of this college town. Walking down King’s Parade is a beautiful experience.
  • Walking along the backs of the colleges  gives you a completely different view of Cambridge’s old center.
  • Going punting along River Cam  is a unique experience.
  • Cambridge old churches  are scattered all over the city’s center and they are beautiful to visit. One of my favorite quaint English churches is in Cambridge.
  • Strolling through beautiful gardens especially during sunny days during the spring is absolutely stunning.

Walking Tour Map of Cambridge UK

1. The Round Church

The Round Church is the best spot for starting any walking tour of Cambridge UK

The first stop on our walking tour of Cambridge UK is the Round Church, also known as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The Round Church was built by crusaders in the 12th century and is one of the oldest landmarks in Cambridge.

One of only four medieval round churches still in use in England, the Round Church is constructed in the Gothic architectural style. The visitor’s center offers exhibits on the history of the city and the church. It is the perfect place to begin our walking tour because of its iconic appearance and central location in the Cambridge city center.

The Round Church is one of the oldest landmarks in Cambridge

2. Great St Mary’s Church

Great Saint Mary's Church seen from the market square.

Get ready for a climb! At the North end of King’s Parade, we will come across Great St Mary’s Church.

Look up at the imposing stone tower, which houses the bells that have rung out every day for hundreds of years. For a small fee, you can ascend the staircase within the tower and take in sweeping views of the Historical Colleges. We will visit a couple of these later on our walking tour of Cambridge.

The church has a close relationship with Cambridge University – in fact, it is still required that undergraduate students live within three miles of the church. Inside, enjoy the quiet atmosphere under wooden beamed ceilings and learn about the church’s two impressive organs.

Cambridge, England - Farmers' Market at Market Hill and panorama of Cambridge seen from Great Saint Mary's Church Tower.

3. Sheep’s Green

Beautiful view of punting boats moored on River Cam.

At the end of Mill Lane you will find yourself on the banks of the River Cam. If you’re in a seafaring mood, you can take a boat tour of the Historical Colleges along the river. You may also hire a punt, kayak, or canoe to explore independently. Then, stroll diagonally through the picturesque Sheep’s Green. You will pass by many small ponds and bridges in this expansive park, and eventually you will arrive on the opposite bank of the river.

4. Mathematical Bridge

The quirky wooden Mathematical Bridge over River Cam is a popular stop on any walking tour of Cambridge UK.

After walking east on Silver Street, you will find Queen’s College on your left. Near Queen’s College, there is a view of a small wooden bridge. Although its real name is Wooden Bridge, it is known in Cambridge history as Mathematical Bridge because of its fascinating engineering and construction.

There is a popular myth that Isaac Newton built this bridge without using any screws, bolts, or nails. In reality, it was designed and constructed by William Etheredge and James Essex in 1749. It is held together with typical fasteners, but it is famous for its elegant rounded arch shape…even though it is built with only straight planks of wood! You can cross the bridge yourself and explore Queen’s College for £3.50.

5. Walk The Backs

Beautiful back view of King's College and its Chapel.

A large portion of the remainder of our walking tour of Cambridge UK will take place along The Backs, a scenic tree-lined path that follows the back sides of the Historical Colleges. The Backs is flanked by the colleges’ huge lawns, which have been well-preserved for centuries as a popular green space.

6. King’s College Chapel

King's College Chapel and The Old Schools seen from Saint Mary's Church Tower.

King’s College was not built in a day – in fact, it was not even built in seventy years. Construction on the chapel began in 1446, and was still incomplete when King Henry VIII was coronated in 1509. The chapel was finally completed in 1531 with the installation of vivid stained glass windows. Construction of the chapel took place during the Wars of the Roses, which is part of the reason it took so long. Inside, look up at the intricate, lacy ceilings. Walk along the bold black and white marble floor to the altar, where you can view The Adoration of the Magi by well-known Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens.

If you’re planning to come to Cambridge, make sure you checkout the official King’s College website for the best information about visiting this beautiful chapel.

When you’ve had your fill of the chapel’s stunning architecture and history, exit King’s College and head towards Clare College, just to the west on the bank of the river. There are two stops left on our walking tour of Cambridge UK.

7. Fellows’ Garden at Clare College

People punting on River Cam next to Clare College.

Just across the river from Clare College is the sprawling green expanse of the Fellows’ Garden. The garden was designed by Nevill Willmer, a professor of History at Cambridge. Willmer’s interest in color theory paid off in the beautiful flora of the garden.

The walkway to Clare College is lined up with blooming tulips in the spring.

It is a particularly special place to visit in the spring, when bright sunlight illuminates hundreds of colorful flowers. A small admission fee allows you to wander the garden at your leisure and engage in scholarly thought – or just enjoy the scenery.

8. St John’s College

The covered bridge of sighs at St. John's college seen from a boat

In St John’s college, you will experience some of the most notable historic landmarks in Cambridge. If you are planning to visit, make sure you checkout St John’s visitor information website .

Take a day trip from Cambridge . If you have a few extra days to spend in Cambridge , rent a car in Europe and explore my favorite day trips from Cambridge . The Cambridgeshire countryside is beautiful and the surrounding old villages and manor houses will transport you back in time.

Get the Best Plug Adapter for Europe . I used it for all my trips to Europe. Very compact but has room for a laptop charger. Life saver while in Europe. Compare it !

Is Cambridge UK Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! Cambridge has become my favorite day trip from London . With its small historical center and idyllic River Cam location, Cambridge is beautiful to visit especially during spring. Our children loved walking the narrow streets and the many ducks with ducklings in the ponds and on River Cam. Plan to spend at least an entire day in this lovely historical city.

History doesn’t need to be boring, and with so many big names and events having been tied to Cambridge (as well as the University having so many bizarre traditions and funny stories), we see no reason why you shouldn’t enjoy every single minute of your tour experience.

Women in Cambridge

Walking guided tours with Cambridge Green Badge Guides:

  • Tour duration 2 hrs;
  • Maximum group size 20

Hear the surprising, shocking, and sometimes funny, story of how women made their mark on the University of Cambridge.

We'll start from the medieval founders and finish with today’s senior academics, heads of colleges, and influential alumnae.

Denied an education at the university for the first 650 years of its existence, women, backed by male supporters, faced extraordinary challenges to gain access and equality.

Early enthusiasm for change put Cambridge in the vanguard of Victorian educational reform. With their fighting spirit, alumnae of the first womens’ colleges made an indelible mark on the city and country, through pioneering civic and social activism.

But the promising start for women turned into resistance and violent protest. The university didn't award women full degrees until 1948, the last in Britain to do so.

So, who did what, along a long and rocky road? Afterall, today Cambridge women take for granted their equal rights to be learning, teaching and leading.

Why did it take so long?

This tour will change the way you see Cambridge. We'll shine a light on some remarkable characters, key events and significant places.

This tour tells a gripping, illuminating tale that will run & run. To organise your tour, please contact Ruth Meyer:

  • Phone: +44 (0)7835 786 268

Book Groups off the Sofa - 2 hours

An informed stroll through the parts of Cambridge associated with:

  • scenarios in novels;
  • shadows of poems…

Cambridge has inspired so much:

  • See where Joanne Harris or Allison Pearson must have bicycled with their books;
  • Linger on a bridge where Susan Hill – or AS Byatt - might have pondered a plot;
  • Suzanna Gregory,
  • Jill Paton Walsh;
  • Stand beneath an archway featured in Jane Gardam's writings ;
  • Gaze at the gardens germane to Patricia Fara’s ‘Sex, Botany and Empire’;
  • Admire the Bloomsbury set.

At the end of the tour, we'll direct you for a tea or tipple, as you wish!

Walking with the Faithful [2 hours]

Cambridge contains so many writers and thinkers who were, or are, followers of the major world faiths. Come with us, and also salute many honest doubters! Walk where 'prayer has been valid' and controversy explored by scholarship, spirituality and action. And perhaps consider some Social Reformers along the way.

  • Scholars, Reformers and Martyrs : thinking about the brilliant brains and stout hearts in many faiths;
  • The Spiritual and the Poetic : in this powerhouse of poetic reflection;
  • Whispers and Shouts : novelists old and new. Characters searching for acceptance in the faiths they follow;
  • Wordsworth,
  • Wittgenstein,
  • Embracing Faiths: from The Enlightenment to TS Eliot;
  • Sacred Spaces and Silicon Fen;
  • A jug of wine and thou - Life and Love!

The sites we visit will depend on availability and time of day.

About this event

Pictures & posts may gain a thousand likes, but nothing quite captures Cambridge Central Mosque like experiencing it for yourself. Whether you visit alone or with others, whether you are local or just passing by, and regardless of background or faith, we welcome you all.

Our guided tours take you from the hustle and bustle of the world famous Mill Road on a transformative voyage… Starting at our gardens, we journey through its trees, flower beds and fountain. We then pass through the portico and atrium, via our ablution areas, cleansed and ready to enter the grand prayer hall: an oasis of calm, and the perfect space for spiritual contemplation and connection with the unseen.

Whilst marvelling at the award winning architecture, we explore the evolution of this eco-friendly project and furnish you with an appreciation of the concepts behind the craftsmanship that define this incredible space.

Each of our guides has a unique story to tell, and after your guided tour, so will you. Guided tours for the general public – as individuals or groups of families & friends up to 9 people – are available on weekend mornings at 11:30am. If tickets are unavailable, please check back at the end of the month for release of new dates for the following month.

Frequently asked questions

We have underground parking for cars and motorbikes (76 spaces), including disabled parking spaces. However, where possible we encourage our visitors to arrive by bus, bike or on foot to reduce their carbon footprint. There is a bus stop directly outside the mosque and bike racks are available.

Out of respect for our place of worship, adult visitors are requested to observe modest dress that covers their arms and legs. Women will be asked to cover their heads before entering the prayer hall, so please bring a scarf with you. All visitors will be asked to remove their shoes at the entrance.

Children of all ages are welcome. However, we do ask that they be supervised at all times.

The tour is wheelchair-accessible and there is a lift from the car park. We also have wheelchairs available onsite. Please let us know in advance if you require special assistance.

Unfortunately, we do not allow pets to join tour groups.

We offer allocated slots during the week for Organisational Tours, although availability is limited at the moment. We are training further volunteer guides and hope to offer more tour slots in the not too distant future. Please visit: https://cambridgecentralmosque.org/tours.
