Pinelands police in the Western Cape have asked for the public’s help in tracing a German tourist who disappeared last Tuesday in Cape Town .

Missing German tourist

Provincial police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said 22-year-old Nick Frischke, a German tourist who arrived in South Africa on Monday, 6 February was last seen in a local store in the V&A Waterfront.

He said reports suggest the tourist was staying at a local AirBnB in Pinelands.

Vanished without trace

“On Tuesday, 14 February at around 10:00, he left the premises on foot and never returned,” Swartbooi said.

He said at the time of his disappearance, Frischke was last seen wearing blue denim shorts with white tekkies and a beige T-shirt; he was carrying a backpack.

Swartbooi said it was important to note the missing tourist did not speak English very well.

He pleaded with anyone who can assist with information that will lead to Frischke’s safe return to contact the investigating officer Detective Sergeant Daluxolo Mhlauli on 076 609 0764.

Alternatively, the public can use the SA Police Service (Saps) Crime Stop number 08600 10111.

Impassioned plea on Facebook

Facebook user Tom Frischke posted an impassioned plea for information about the missing person’s whereabouts.

“Who can provide information on his whereabouts, who saw him last? Dear hospitals, please see if he might be with you after all! Please share and give information to the police!” Tom posted.

According to Tom, all Frischke’s stuff was still at the AirBnB.

“Thursday he signed up for a surf course and he never showed up. We don’t know what to do and think that he is in a helpless situation. The mountain guard and local police, as well as the Germans, are informed,” he added.

German tourist at Kruger Park

In October last year, a German tourist was shot and killed en route to the Kruger National Park when the vehicle they were travelling with came under attack at Numbi Road near White River in Mpumalanga.

The tourists were stopped by three armed men in a VW Caddy who ordered them to open the doors of their Hyundai H1.

The men opened fire on the driver through the window when he reportedly locked all the doors, hitting him in the upper body.

Suspects in court following disappearance of German tourist

investigating officer

Three suspects made a brief appearance in court yesterday with another two due to appear today following the disappearance of a German tourist in Cape Town two weeks ago.

While the search for 22-year-old Nick Frischke continues, the Hout Bay Community Policing Forum has confirmed the group’s appearance after items belonging to the tourist were found in their possession last week.

“We can confirm that three suspects in the disappearance of Nick Frischke appeared in court yesterday and they have admitted to robbing Mr Frischke,” read a post on the policing forum’s Facebook page this morning. “Two more suspects will appear in court today. The victims backpack and cellphone were recovered as well as a knife.”

“Despite intensive questioning and following up of information from the suspects there is still no sign of the missing hiker.  Saps Investigation continues.”

A candlelight vigil will be held in Hout Bay tomorrow as the search continues.

The 22-year-old was staying at an Airbnb in Pinelands at the time of his disappearance, and left the premises on foot on 15 February, resulting in a massive search by both law enforcement and the community.

Last week, Hout Bay Community Crime Prevention confirmed that Frischke was last spotted alone on the Hangberg trail.

Searches were also conducted by the NSRI, a Western Cape Government Health EMS rescue squad drone team, an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) rescue squad trail search and rescue team, a police K9 search and rescue team, WSAR (Wilderness Search and Rescue) members and WSAR K9 search and rescue.

Meanwhile in Germany, a Paypal account has been opened to raise €19,000 (about R370,000) to support the family and local aid organisations in their search. The donations pledged stood at €13,321.60, just over R260, 000, by Monday.

Taking to Facebook, the Hout Bay Community Policing Forum denied rumours that Frischke had been found, adding that there had been a massive effort from authorities and volunteer services to find him.

“The SAPS investigation is at a sensitive stage and everyone is requested to avoid spreading rumours and conjecture,” it said.

Police spokesperson, FC Van Wyk, confirmed that both the investigation and the search for Frischke were still under way, adding that there were no new developments that could be disclosed at this stage.

The candlelight vigil will be taking place at Hout Bay Beach at 7:30pm on Wednesday.

News & features, winter center, news / weather news, 5 killed after floods engulf southern germany.

(CNN) —  Five people have died and  thousands were evacuated  in southern Germany after heavy rainfall hit the region and caused vast floods, prompting warnings from senior officials that the climate crisis was set to worsen extreme weather in the country.

Two people and a firefighter have been confirmed dead in Bavaria state, Juergen Weiss of the Bavarian firefighters’ association told CNN.

One of those killed was washed away in her car, while the cause of death for the second civilian is not yet known. The firefighter died when his inflatable rubber boat capsized on Saturday.

Meanwhile, two more people died in their basement in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, police said. Authorities believe they perished while trying to pump water out of their basement.

Six people and a 22-year-old firefighter remain missing, regional authorities say.

After heavy rainfall, the German Armed Forces has sent 800 personnel to the region to help with rescue efforts. The German weather service has forecast no more heavy rainfall.

The River Danube is the center of concern for rescue efforts, with high levels of water passing through the city of Regensburg on Tuesday morning, following an evacuation effort the evening before.

On Tuesday morning, the level of the Danube had reached 31.5 feet (9.6 meters) in Passau, according to the Bavarian State Environmental Office, almost double the normal level for this time of year.

Three rivers meet in the historic university town, where authorities have stopped motorized traffic and emptied underground car parks.

In Bavaria, more than 52,000 emergency workers have been deployed, most of them volunteers, the firefighters’ association said. But it added the vast area of flooding posed challenges for them.

Climate change to blame

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said during a visit to the flood areas on Monday that increased flooding was an indication of climate change.

“We are very clear about the fact that this is not just an event that has been happening for centuries, but that there are already more and more cases where we have to deal with disasters, floods in particular,” Scholz said.

Economy Minister and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck also noted Sunday that climate change is causing more severe weather events.

“What we are seeing is that the frequency of these events is increasing significantly. Record floods occur every few years … record rainfall every few years,” Habeck, of the Greens Party, told broadcaster n-tv.

Deadly floods hit Western Europe in 2021, with at least 220 people killed between July 12 and 15, mostly in Germany.

Analysis into that event by climate scientists found that the  record rainfall which triggered the deadly floods  was made between 1.2 and nine times more likely by human-caused climate change.

Other areas of Europe have also been affected by heavy rainfall in recent days.

Firefighters near the city of Udine in Northeastern Italy said Sunday they recovered the bodies of two young women who were swept away by strong currents in the Natisone river, which was swollen by the precipitation. Firefighters say they are looking for the body of a third person.

Slovenia was hit by flooding Monday evening. The Radenci and Gornja Radgona municipalities, near the Austrian border, were the worst affected in the country, according to public broadcaster RTV SLO.

Likewise, flooding and landslides hit Croatia’s Krapina-Zagorje county, in the north of the country on the border with Slovenia, following heavy rainfall on Monday, according to public news agency HINA.

CNN’s Barbie Nadeau and Louis Mian contributed to this report.
