The life of a professional golfer isn’t always as glorious as you’d imagine. Many of the top players on television each week have climbed the ranks to reach their current status on tour. A main artery to the PGA and LPGA Tours is through mini-tours. This article will dissect some of the top mini-tours and what you can expect if you’re looking to take this route to the next level of professional golf.
Mini-Tour Golf 101
You’ll often hear that a professional golfer “came up through the mini-tours,” but do you really know what that means? Let’s go over a few basics.
Climbing the Ranks
Most players that are competing on mini-tours have the goal in mind to make it to PGA or LPGA Tour status. For those players that don’t qualify for tours such as the Korn Ferry Tour, which is the direct feeder into the PGA Tour, they’ll need to play on mini-tours to gain status and win money.
For some players, mini-tour life is short-lived. They win a few events, gain some additional sponsorships, and play their way above and beyond. For some players, however, mini-tour golf is the highest level they reach. They play week-to-week and bounce around to different tours based on what they can afford and qualify for.
Entry and Payouts
Almost all of the financial aspects fall on the player. This includes travel, meals, lodging, and entry into the event itself. Considering mini-tour golf often leads players to compete in other countries, it can get costly. Some tours have a yearly entry charge as opposed to charging players by event. The competitor is almost always responsible for their costs as well as their caddie's costs for the week. Oftentimes, mini-tour players will seek sponsorship in the early going just to secure financing for their expenses.
Purses and payouts are strictly determined by the tour and individual event. You can anticipate a winning share of anywhere from $2,000 to $50,000 with low-funded tours obviously paying out less.
Formats and Fields
Almost all mini-tour formats are stroke play over two or three rounds. If a particular event is a larger, marquee event, the field size will usually be a bit larger than normal. A normal mini-tour field will be below 100 players. How an event addresses the cutline, if one exists, is determined by the individual tour or event.
Most Popular Golf Mini-Tours
Here are some of the best golf mini-tours for players to consider.
Minor League Golf Tour
Founded in 2004, the Minor League Golf Tour has become one of the preferred tours for players to develop their games to reach the highest level. The tour aims to provide players with a lower cost option to compete, with payouts awarded to many in the field as opposed to being top heavy. The Minor League Golf Tour site notes that over $12 million had been awarded to over 4,000 competitors since its inception.
The tour offers several membership buy-in options from paying for a single event ($50) or a full year membership ($400). Men, women, seniors, and juniors of professional status are eligible as are amateurs with a handicap on 6.0 or less. Money leaders
Events are played at courses throughout Florida such as PGA National and Abacoa Golf Club. A popular Minor League Golf alumnus is Brooks Koepka.
Big Easy Golf Tour
South Africa has produced some of the biggest names in golf history. Gary Player, Ernie Els, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Retief Goosen, Branden Grace, and many others have all been a part of the South African success at the professional level. The Big Easy Tour (Altron Big Easy Tour for 2022) is a direct feeder to the Sunshine Tour and was named after Els when the tour began in 2011.
The tour consists of 10 events in a calendar year including a playoff and final. The average winner’s share for an event is around $1,500 and the tournaments are 54 holes with a cut after the second round. Big Easy Tour events are played at prestigious courses throughout South Africa including Centurion Country Club and Country Club of Johannesburg.
IGT Challenge Tour
The IGT Challenge Tour is operated by certified PGA and R&A individuals and is made up of a series of 54-hole events that have a cut after two rounds of play. This tour is a direct feeder to the Big Easy Tour and also consists of 54-hole events with a cut after two rounds. The cost for membership is only $150 and even amateurs are allowed to earn up to $1,000 by playing in events if they don’t yet have professional status.
The GProTour began in 2013 and is a regionally based tour that serves North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Like other tours, the GProTour has a 54-hole format with a 36-hole cut. A season consists of around 20 events with each having a purse in the $60,000- $70,000 range. Events are played at courses such as Albemarle Plantation and Mimosa Hills GOlf & Country Club.
New members to the GProTour will pay $1,099 for a yearly membership. Each event also has three spots devoted to amateurs, where a $275 entry fee will get you into the field.
The Epson Tour is the official development tour for the LPGA Tour. Up until 2021, it was known at the Symetra Tour and has graduated great players that have gone onto the LPGA including Nelly Korda, Stacy Lewis, Christina Kim, and countless others. The Epson Tour lowered its entry fee to $450 per event with winner shares hovering around $50,000 for a tournament.
As a direct line to the LPGA Tour, the Epson Tour fields the best female players in the world that are nearly ready to make the jump to the highest level. Events are held at top-tier courses such as French Lick Resort and Sweetgrass Golf Club.
The Alps Tour is a developmental mini-tour that serves Austria, France, Italy,Switzerland, Belgium, Spain, Slovenia, Morocco, and Egypt and is a direct feeder to the DP World Tour. The Alps Tour season consists of 18 events which span over many of the countries listed and the field size is typical in the 120-144 player range. The top-40 players make the cut after two rounds (three rounds total) and the minimum prize money is around $40,000. The 2022 season concludes at the Alps Tour Grand Final and takes place at Modena Golf & Country Club in Italy.
As the game of golf continues to grow, the number of tours and organizations offering players the opportunity to compete grows. If your aspirations are to be a professional player on the PGA or LPGA Tour, mini-tours are great places to begin your journey.

Meet the 39-year-old mini-tour player who qualified for her first u.s. women's open in 15 years, share this article.
Jean Reynolds turns 40 in September and recently qualified for her third U.S. Women’s Open. The last time Reynolds qualified for a Women’s Open was 2009 at Saucon Valley, back when she was the top player on what’s now the Epson Tour. The 5-foot-2 Reynolds garnered plenty of attention back then when she played her way into contention.
“I really didn’t know if this would happen again,” said Reynolds, who currently holds no tour status of any kind.
Reynolds never has been a cookie-cutter player. After a strong junior career, she was recruited to play golf at the University of Georgia but quit the team after she arrived in Athens, opting for a more conventional college lifestyle. She joined a sorority, studied abroad in Austria, and quit playing competitive golf.
And then, after she graduated with a degree in Child & Family Development in December of 2007, the well-rounded Reynolds was back inside the ropes, refreshed and ready to grind.
She won twice on the developmental tour in 2009 and ultimately tied for 17th at Saucon Valley. She’d never guess that it’d take 15 years to get back to a Women’s Open.
Jean Reynolds at the 2009 U.S. Women’s Open.
Last week, Reynolds flew to Virginia for the Belle Haven Country Club qualifier in Alexandria. She birdied the last two holes of a 36-hole qualifier, draining a 25-foot putt on the 17th, to close with a 69 and co-medal with China’s Ruixin Liu at 5 under. Only two players from the qualifier advanced to the championship, held May 30-June 2 at Lancaster Country Club.
“There’s a lot of validation for me,” said Reynolds. “All the sacrifices, it was worth it. What I believed in myself and my game was true. I still can play, and I still can play with some of the tops. I’m not crazy!”
In the midst of Reynolds’ rookie season on the LPGA in 2010, a lean year for the tour, a shoulder injury popped up from seemingly out of nowhere after the British Open. She’d already played too many events, however, to qualify for a medical exemption.
In 2012, Reynolds underwent shoulder surgery and took 18 months to rehab. Because she didn’t play four years consecutively on the LPGA, she didn’t qualify for Class A status. Faced with the decision to use that degree and start at rock bottom with a real-world job, or start at rock bottom again in the pro ranks, Reynolds opted to stick with the job she loves.
It was back to the Epson Tour, where she continued the grind.
When an EF-4 tornado struck Reynolds’ beloved hometown of Newnan, Georgia, in 2021, she went back to help with the cleanup efforts and wound up with tears in her rotator cuff. It took six Platelet-Rich Plasma injections in each shoulder to keep her competitive days alive.
Reynolds still lives at home with her parents and jokingly calls them her “roomies.” The real MVP of the family, she says, is Chubb, the yellow lab named after former Georgia running back Nick Chubb.
“They allow me to do what I love to do,” said Reynolds, “and they’ve believed in me the whole time.”
Jean Reynolds poses with her beloved dog Chubb. (courtesy photo)
Last summer, Reynolds missed the cut at Stage I of LPGA Q-School, which meant she left the California desert without any Epson Tour status. She called it a sucker punch but tried to see the silver lining.
“I’ve always kind of done things a little bit different anyways,” she said.
Over the winter, Reynolds played on the NXXT mini tour, winning the NXXT Women’s Championship at Rio Pinar in Orlando.
In the lead-up to the Women’s Open, she’ll play on the Annika Women’s All Pro Tour in Texas and, hopefully, the Monday qualifier for the Mizuho Americas Open at Liberty National Golf Course in New Jersey. As a non-member professional, Reynolds will be toward the end of the line when it comes to landing a spot in the qualifying field.
With so few players 40 and over competing on the LPGA these days, Reynolds will be one of the oldest in the field at Lancaster. Reynolds says she’s in better shape now at 39 than she was at 29. She hits it about 260 yards off the tee, 10 yards farther than she did 15 years ago at her last Women’s Open appearance.
Given all that she’s been through since 2009, there’s no doubt she heads to Lancaster more grateful than ever.
“There’s an inner belief that you just have to deep down know that hard work will pay off,” she said. “You hope sooner than later.
“You have to believe it.”

The History of the Oldest Mini Golf Course
The origins of mini golf can be traced back to the early 20th century, when the game was first introduced as a fun, family-friendly activity. The first official mini golf corse was established in 1916 at Pinehurst, North Carolina, and was called the Thistle Dhu. This course is widely regarded as the oldest mini golf course in America.
Prior to the establishment of the Thistle Dhu, mini golf was played on makeshift courses that were typically set up in parks or other public spaces. These courses were often designed using whatever materials were available, such as logs, bricks, or other natural elements.
However, the Thistle Dhu changed all of that by introducing the first official standardized mini golf course. This course was designed to be both challenging and fun, with a variety of obstacles and hazards that players had to navigate in order to complete the course.
Today, mini golf has become a popular pastime all around the world, with courses ranging from simple and straightforward to complex and challenging. The Oldest Mini Golf Course in the Country
Miniature golf, also known as mini-golf, is a recreational sport that involves putting a golf ball into a series of holes on a course, using a putter. The first miniature golf course was established in the late 19th century in the United Kingdom, and the sport quickly became popular in other countries, including the United States.
When it comes to the oldest mini-golf course in the country, the answer is a bit more complicated. There are several courses that claim to be the oldest, and it can be difficult to determine which one is truly the first.
One of the oldest mini-golf courses in the United States is the Thistle Dhu Miniature Golf Course in Pinehurst, North Carolina. This course was built in 1919 and is still in operation today. Another contender for the title of oldest mini-golf course is the Tom Thumb Golf Course in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which was built in 1926.
However, there is one mini-golf course that can claim to be the oldest in the country, and that is the Miniature Golf Course at the Lookout Mountain Golf Club in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. This course was built in 1927 and is still in operation today.
It is important to note, however, that there may be other mini-golf courses that were built around the same time, or even earlier, that have since closed down or been forgotten. Therefore, while the Miniature Golf Course at the Lookout Mountain Golf Club may be the oldest currently operating mini-golf course in the country, it is difficult to determine with certainty which course was truly the first.
The Birthplace of U.S. Golf
The birthplace of golf in the United States is widely recognized as Charleston, South Carolina. Specifically, the South Carolina Golf Club, formed in 1786, is credited with introducing the game to the country. The club’s members reportedly played on a rectangular piece of land located beteen Charleston and Beaufain streets, bounded by Rutledge and Barre streets. This area is now a bustling part of the city, but its historical significance as the site of the first golf games in the U.S. is celebrated by many.
It’s worth noting that while Charleston is often cited as the birthplace of golf in America, the game’s origins can be traced back much further to Scotland, where it was first played in the 15th century. Golf has since become a beloved sport worldwide, with millions of players and fans around the globe.
To summarize, Charleston, South Carolina, specifically the South Carolina Golf Club, is widely recognized as the birthplace of golf in the United States, with the club’s members playing on a rectangular patch of land located between Charleston and Beaufain streets, bounded by Rutledge and Barre streets.

The List: Mini-Tours
The Challenge Tour, Korn Ferry Tour and Sunshine Tour are for golfers aiming at the major Tours, but what are the mini-Tours a rung below? BRENDAN BARRATT has the list.
There are a lot of very talented golfers desperately trying to make their way to the next level while spending as little cash as possible.
From driving cheap cars long distances between tournaments to sleeping in the front seat or staying in low-budget hotels, carrying their own golf bags and getting by without any real form of income other than prize money, it’s a far cry from the pampered lifestyles of the professionals on the PGA and DP World Tours.
To make matters more challenging, most of the Tours have relatively high entry fees and low purses, meaning that players are living hand to mouth – in the hope they can achieve their one big breakthrough.
Here are some of the mini-Tours that carry the hopes and dreams of golfers who, while relatively unknown, are better than any of us will ever be.
IGT Big Easy Tour
In South Africa, the IGT Big Easy Tour is the official developmental Tour of the Sunshine Tour. Launched in 2010, it offers players a good testing ground against professionals and top amateurs, as well as a direct avenue to the Sunshine Tour, with the top 10 players for the season earning their Tour cards for the following year. Notable graduates: Daniel van Tonder, Dylan Frittelli, Christiaan Bezuidenhout
PGA EuroPro Tour
Launched in 2002, the EuroPro Tour gives up-and-coming European golfers a platform to showcase their skills and play their way on to the Challenge Tour. It’s also had a few South Africans come through the ranks, including Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Thomas Aiken and Branden Grace. Notable graduates: Tyrrell Hatton (below) , Tommy Fleetwood.
Bushveld Tour
Another local developmental Tour, the Bushveld Tour offers one-day (18-hole) tournaments for amateurs and professionals. Entry fees are in the region of R1 000, meaning players need to realistically finish in the top 10 to cover their costs, which is a pretty solid grounding for life on the bigger Tours. Notable graduates: Jacques Blaauw
Pro Golf Tour
The Pro Golf Tour is one of four official satellite tours in Europe recognised by the DP World Tour as a gateway to the Challenge Tour, with the top five players at the end of the season earning their Challenge Tour cards. Founded in 1997, the Tour now has 16 tournaments across six countries and a total purse of €500,000. Notable graduates: Martin Kaymer
Another satellite Tour that leads to the Challenge Tour, the Alps Tour was launched in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland in 2001. While the countries involved may have changed over the years, the basic premise has not. Notable graduates: Matt Wallace, Adri Arnaus
PGA Tour Latinoamerica, Mackenzie Tour, Forme Tour
In 2011, the PGA Tour took over the running of the Tour de las Americas, rebranding it as the PGA Tour Latinoamerica. A year later the PGA Tour took the reins of the Canadian Tour and it was renamed the Mackenzie Tour in 2015 as part of a sponsorship agreement. In 2021, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and to support those players who had earned Mackenzie Tour cards but were unable to travel between the US and Canada, the PGA Tour launched the Forme Tour. Notable PGA Tour Latinoamerica graduates: Harry Higgs (below) , Keith Mitchell, Emiliano Grillo Notable Mackenzie Tour graduates: Tony Finau, Joel Dahmen
Symetra Tour
Formerly known as the LPGA Futures Tour, the Symetra Tour is seen as the official qualifying Tour for the LPGA Tour. With over 20 events and in excess of $3-million in prize money, it is a great breeding ground for the next generation of LPGA stars. To date, 435 LPGA titles have been won by former Symetra Tour players. Notable graduates: Lorena Ochoa, Inbee Park, Nelly Korda
Let Access Series
Launched in 2010, the Let Access Series is the official developmental Tour to the Ladies European Tour. By 2019 it had built up a head of steam, with 20 events and a total purse of over a million euros, but Covid-19 has taken its toll and the Tour was down to 14 events in 2021. Notable graduates: Carly Booth, Georgia Hall, Carlota Ciganda
Gateway Tour, All Pro Tour, SwingThought Tour
The US has a number of developmental Tours that rank just below the Korn Ferry Tour. The Gateway Tour, based in Arizona, California and Florida, the All Pro Tour and the SwingThought Tour (formerly known as the Hooters Tour) are three of the most popular, although there are many others. Notable graduates: Johannes Veerman, Shawn Stefani, MJ Daffue

The surprisingly subversive history of mini golf
No sport is quite as whimsical as mini golf. But it came about as a way to make golfing accessible to everyone—regardless of your sex, race, or class.
Have you ever putted into an oversized shoe or lost your golf ball in an artificially colored stream? If so, you’ve likely played one of the most popular sports of its day, miniature golf or mini golf—an amusement whose origins are as contentious as whether you got that hole in one.
One thing that isn’t contested is miniature golf’s surprisingly subversive history. Blocked from golf courses by their sex, race, or class, people at the sport’s margins actually helped push golf to the masses—and gave it its spirited sense of fun. Here’s more about how the sport became so inclusive.
Women and the origins of miniature golf
The origin story of mini golf is up for debate. Some track the idea to the private homes of elites in both Europe and the United States, while others credit the game’s development to its commercial birth during the 1920s. But one group has always been integral to the sport: women.
Women’s participation in golf is as old as golf itself, which emerged in Scotland during the Middle Ages and was formalized in the 18th century. Women were interested in the sport, but they were largely blocked from participating due to the strictures of their times, which condemned active women as “unladylike” and incompetent. As historian Jane George writes , women’s presence on golf courses “was regarded as a distraction for the serious male golfer.” Though prestigious golf clubs did allow women, they were relegated to fundraising, social events, and supporting the play of their male family members.
( Why women's basketball still fights for equal recognition .)
This sex–based segregation frustrated women—and helped spark one of the precursors to miniature golf. At the legendary St. Andrews golf course in Scotland, women banned from the links began playing on the course designated for caddies. Their husbands, however, objected to their wives interacting with caddies, whom they considered as social inferiors, so they designated a separate, more “suitable” course for women: a small course so bumpy, it was known as the Himalayas. And so, in 1867, about a hundred women joined together to create the St. Andrews Ladies’ Golf Club.
The putting green , designed by Scottish golf legend Old Tom Morris, had nine holes and obstacles like a stream and bridge. Well-heeled women putted there during monthly, lavishly catered competitions, vying for prizes like opera glasses and rings . Still open today, the Himalayas’ small size presaged the putting craze to come—and the role marginalized people would play in the sport’s development.
Mini golf for the masses
As golf spread from the United Kingdom to the United States, its first players were elite men, mostly members of exclusive Gilded-Age gentlemen’s clubs. They established sports clubs—the forerunners of country clubs—both in their cities of residence and in their summer retreats such as Newport and Saratoga Springs.
( These mansion museums reveal the grittier side of the Gilded Age .)
Even as the social elite hurried to wall off their favorite sport from the masses, golf was filtering into the mainstream, attracting people of all classes, races, and genders. Cities began building municipal golf courses, starting with New York’s Van Cortlandt Park in 1895. As sports historian George B. Kirsch notes , the sport got an even bigger boost after World War I , when a combination of increased leisure time, suburbanization, consumerism, and prosperity “generated new waves of enthusiasm” for golf. By the 1920s, golf had become a national craze.
But there was an issue with golf’s popularity: space. The traditional golf course spreads across up to 200 acres—land that many cities, and even wealthy private estates, simply lacked. And that dilemma is what many say led to the real origins of miniature golf—a sport more whimsical, and more accessible, than upper-class golfers could have foreseen.
British shipping magnate James Wells Barber, inadvertently helped usher a smaller version of the sport by building “Thistle Dhu” (This’ll Do), a tiny 18-hole course in Pinehurst, North Carolina, on his estate in 1917. The mini course had natural and artificial obstacles and architectural and landscape flourishes that would influence later miniature golf courses.
Meanwhile, Garnet Carter, a hotel owner from Georgia, was testing out his own miniature form of golf. Carter’s mini golf course designs, which he created in the mid-1920s with his wife , Frieda, took the idea of “miniature” to an extreme, featuring diminutive fairy-tale themed architectural elements and lots of garish statuary, neon lights, and fanciful hazards like hollowed-out logs and bridges watched over by gnome-like figures. The concept—complete with an artificial green made of cottonseed hulls—was so popular that Carter patented it, and the “Tom Thumb” golf course was born.
Tom Thumb courses were different from the greens frequented by well-heeled golfers: The patented miniature courses needed just 2,100 square feet and could be installed indoors or outdoors. “Here indeed is the putting game that will whet the appetite of the most seasoned golfer and thrill to the finger tips the millions of Tom Thumb fans,” blared a 1930 advertisement seeking investment in the indoor version of the game.
It was a hit: People began building their own, ever more lavish, mini golf courses nationwide. Soon, you could find miniature golf on rooftops and in public parks, and by the end of the 1930s, there were as many as 50,000 miniature attractions—often billed as “midget golf”—across the nation.
Even as the U.S. slumped into the Great Depression, the fad persisted. As pop culture historian Nancy Hendricks explains , the inexpensive game was seen as a way to “cure Depression blues,” mimic the wealthy, and even make money for those who turned their own small plots of land into increasingly outlandish courses.
Civil rights on the mini course
Mini golf was now a legitimate national obsession. It didn’t just attract white Americans: The diminutive game also intrigued Black golfers, who had long been involved in the sport in the U.S., first as enslaved caddies, then at segregated country clubs and some municipal courses. Historian Lane Demas notes that many of the 150 mini golf courses in New York City in 1930 were located in Harlem, many affiliated with legendary venues like the Apollo Theater and the Savoy. “Nearly every black enclave in the North experienced the miniature golf fad,” Demas writes .
Mini golf also took off throughout the Jim Crow South . Locked out of white-owned country clubs, many serious Black golfers could only practice at mini golf facilities—just not those that were owned by white people. In response, Black community organizations built mini golf courses of their own.
( Public swimming pools are still haunted by segregation's legacy .)
Golf even played a landmark role in the desegregation of public recreation areas in the nation’s capital—and a mini course was among the first to be desegregated. By 1941, Black golfers had already pushed for, and received, their own municipal golf courses in the District of Columbia, but the grounds were neglected and inferior to the courses for their white counterparts. That summer, a group of Black men attempted to play the segregated East Potomac Park municipal golf course in protest, only to be shouted down by white golfers.
In response to the incident, Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes desegregated the park—including its miniature golf course—a first during the Jim Crow era. Icke also declared all of the District’s federally funded golf courses integrated. Though it would take more than a decade for D.C. to integrate all of its public recreational facilities, the protest was a historic first for Black golfers.
Other miniature golf courses played a role in the history of the civil rights struggle as well; for example, a municipal mini golf course in St. Augustine, Florida, became the city’s first public place open to Black people in 1964.
Since then, the sport has had its ups and downs. The car-crazy 1950s ushered in another golden era for the fanciful sport, but it faced a long decline as the 20th century waned.
Nevertheless, miniature golf—and its subversive spirit—continues to entertain both amateur and professional golfers alike. And it continues to provide an outlet to a wide swath of people: the National Golf Foundation estimates that 18 million people played mini golf in 2022 alone—45 percent of them female and 24 percent non-white.

Michael Thorbjornsen gets his PGA Tour card early with Christo Lamprecht injury at NCAAs
I n an unexpected twist, the race for the top spot in the PGA Tour University rankings is over just one round into the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships. Georgia Tech senior Christo Lamprecht was not in the lineup on Saturday morning at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., due to a back soreness, and that eliminates the current No. 2 in PGA Tour U from competing for the NCAA individual title.
For the South African to overcome No. 1 Michael Thorbjornsen, of Stanford, he needed to win at La Costa and have the Cardinal finish worse than in a two-way tie for 10th. With that no longer being a possibility, Thorbjornsen will claim the top spot for PGA Tour U and earn his PGA Tour card for the rest of 2024 and all of 2025.
The circumstance is likely more disappointing to Lamprecht because of how strongly the world’s top-ranked amateur started at La Costa. Over a very challenging North Course, reimagined for the NCAAs by architect Gil Hanse, Lamprecht shot two-under-par 70—one of only 12 rounds under par. He was tied for fifth, while Thorbjornsen opened with a 74 and was tied for 41st. Lamprecht can still return to action for his team in the final two team qualifying rounds on Sunday and Monday and play during the eight-team match play should the Yellow Jackets go that far.
The upside for Lamprecht is that he’s guaranteed to finish in the No. 2-5 positions in PGA Tour U, and those golfers receive Korn Ferry Tour membership for the rest of this season and are exempt into the final stage of PGA Tour Q School in the fall.
Thorbjornsen, ranked No. 3 in the WAGR and champion of the 2018 U.S. Junior, recorded five consecutive top-eight finishes for Stanford heading into the NCAA championship. His last win came in the Cabo Collegiate Invitational in March.
Last year, the race for PGA Tour U No. 1 was over before the NCAAs, with Ludvig Aberg of Texas Tech being so dominate that he wrapped it up early. Having earned his PGA Tour card, Aberg, of course, quickly established himself as a force by winning the 2023 RSM Classic and playing for the winning European Ryder Cup side. This season, the Swede has two solo runner-ups, at Pebble Beach and the Masters.

PGA Tour status on the line for 2 heralded seniors at men’s NCAA Championship
Stanford's Michael Thorbjornsen tops the PGA Tour University rankings and can earn PGA Tour status if he remains there at the end of this week's NCAA Championship in California.
David Cannon
There will be extra incentive for 19 players when the men’s NCAA Championship begins Friday at Omni La Costa Resort in California. While there are 30 teams competing, the PGA Tour University Rankings will be finalized on Monday after the completion of 72 holes of stroke play. The top 25 players in those rankings will earn various status or exemptions on affiliated PGA Tours for the remainder of the year.
Nineteen of the current top 25 are in action at La Costa.
The biggest prize is PGA Tour status, which only Stanford senior Michael Thorbjornsen or Georgia Tech senior Christo Lamprecht can earn. The No. 1 player in the PGA Tour U rankings will earn membership for the rest of 2024 and all of 2025.

Top-ranked Thorbjornsen will earn tour status if he finishes in a two-way tie for 10th place or better. Lamprecht must win the NCAA’s individual championship and Thorbjornsen needs to finish worse than the two-way tie for 10th place.
Those who finish in positions 2-5 in the rankings will earn membership on the Korn Ferry Tour for the rest of this year and are fully exempt into the final stage of PGA Tour Q-School this fall.
North Florida’s Nicholas Gabrelcik is fifth in the rankings. In order to remain in that position, and not slide down to the next category, he needs to finish 14th place or better.
Farther down the list, players who finish Nos. 6-10 in the rankings will earn conditional status on the Korn Ferry Tour for the rest of this year. Those who finish 6-25 and are fully exempt on PGA Tour Americas for the rest of 2024. They’re also exempt into the second stage of Q-School.
The PGA Tour will update its university rankings after each round of the NCAA Championship so players will be able to track where they stand each day.
