Our large family group of nine sailed on the Fiordland Jewel for their overnight cruise in Milford Sound, and I am finding that words fail me in trying to convey how wonderful it was. We were in the midst of a 3-week trip to New Zealand and Australia, and this was without doubt the highlight of the entire trip.

Hilary, Connecticut, United States

Amazing, personable, and one of a kind experience. The crew and captain were super helpful, kind, and interesting. The boat was impressive, and we 100% want to go back.

Julie, California, United States

Arrive at the Milford Sound terminal (if travelling by road) or land on the boat (if travelling by helicopter)

Cruise down the southern side of the fiord, past Bowen Falls, Sinbad Gully, the world-renowned Mitre Peak, Mt Pembroke, Bridal Veil Falls and Fairy Falls

If weather permits, we cruise into the mouth of the fiord past Anita Bay, and head into the Tasman Sea for a glimpse of the West Coast, before returning into the sound

Venture up the north side of the fiord past Dale Point, the Piopiotahi Marine Reserve, Seal Rock, Stirling Falls, The Lion and the Cascade Range

After cruising, we anchor at Deepwater Basin for the night. There is the opportunity to explore nearby in the on board sea kayaks and tender boat, before returning to the Fiordland Jewel for drinks and a three-course meal

Dawn arrives at 6am in December but can be as late as 8am in March. Watch the sunrise over continental breakfast, which is served 7am-8am, before returning to the terminal at 9.00am

What our guests say.

We had the most AMAZING time on our overnight cruise on Southern Secret. The transfers with Nadine were wonderful (great combination of personality, warmth, knowledge, smile) and the information and commentary provided by Clint in his own inimitable, Kiwi way, was just wonderful. We loved spending a night on the boat, hosted by Clint and Jenny. We marvelled at Jenny’s competence, and Clint’s competence and ease with both his boat, and the passengers walking all over it. The boat cruise epitomised everything that is great about New Zealand. Nothing was a problem to either Clint or Jenny. The cabins were comfortable, the food was superb, the fishing was fantastic. There was nothing not to like. Yes, it rained, but it’s Doubtful Sound, after all, and so all is forgiven, rain wise, when you have an experience like that, in a place like that. I would recommend this trip to everyone: nobody should have any hesitations at all about this cruise. All in all, a perfect getaway for us, provided by an outstanding company and its people. Thank you.

Could be the best thing we did while in New Zealand. This experience is so unique and provides a much more intimate experience vs a crowded day tour. We saw tons of dolphin, caught fish we ate that night, prepared by the best chef it was so delicious. So many waterfalls. Kayaking as well. Just unbelievable. The boat was so comfortable for the amount of people. I sometimes get seasick and the water was so calm you sometimes forgot you were on a boat. You really have to make this part of your trip while in NZ. Thank you to the crew for everything!

Southern Secret is a wonderful way to see the fabulous scenery and miss the crowds. In addition you get a ride over Lake Manapouri one of NZ’s largest and most stunning lakes. Everything is managed with efficiency and care from start to finish. We were looked after by skipper Jason who shared his enthusiasm for the natural world with us all ... He also taught us how to fish and we caught dinner - blue cod and Jock Stuart - expertly cooked by Kirsten.

Before I went on this cruise, i had read so many wonderful reviews and was getting worried about how these great reviews would set my expectations too high. But in the end, our Skipper Jason and our Chef Caleb lead us on a unforgettable and fun journey through Doubtful Sound... The level of experience they had and the amount of effort they put in to ensure that everyone had a great time is unparalleled. My only complaint is that the whole cruise is too short.

From start to finish this cruise exceeded our expectations. Definitely recommend the small boat - we had 8 people. A great group and we all felt relaxed. Fishing, kayaking, pulling up cray pots - and the food - Kristen your food was out of this world! Dish after dish of yummyness. Jason thank you for going the extra mile to ensure this was indeed the trip of a lifetime.

What an amazing experience onboard the Navigator for a Doubtful Sound overnight cruise. Thanks so much!!The best boat trip I’ve ever taken! Thanks also for giving us glorious sunshine and the atmospheric clouds the next day 😉 The views, the staff, the food and the comfort were all outstanding. We got the luxury of exploring the sound by kayak, and experiencing an amazing sunset over the Tasman. Shout out to Brock for his amazing insight and commentary. Lauracmilner83, Via TripAdvisor
This was a fantastic highlight of our south island tour. After a very enjoyable boat ride across the lake, we boarded one of 2 coaches taking us over the pass to the mooring of the Fjordland Navigator. A great crew on board, enthusiastic and very informative about the background and flora/forna of the sound. We saw dolphins and shearwaters at close quarters. The food was excellent, our cabin was comfortable and the whole experience was unforgettable. The highlight was probably the sound of silence, where the engines and generator were stopped, so you could hear nothing but the birds and the breeze! Awesome. martinlL633EU, Via TripAdvisor
What a wonderful trip, I'm SO glad we decided to take an extra day to do the overnight. The whole area was stunningly beautiful (I actually liked it better than Milford). The transition from boat to bus to ship was seamless, and everyone involved was friendly and knowledgeable. The ship was great, our room (a double) was cozy and the bed was really comfortable. The food was excellent and they had a bar for drinks. It was one of our favorite experiences in a month-long trip and we would definitely recommend it!
Wonderful experience aboard the overnight vessel. The extra time is really the best way to take in how amazing and vast Doubtful Sound is. Great good, super nice accommodation & communal areas and a wonderful & informative nature guide in Brock! Thanks RealNZ for an amazing experience.

What is the difference between Milford and Doubtful Sounds?

fiordland cruises te anau

Our places. Our experiences. Milford and Doubtful Sounds, NZ.

Milford Sound at the mountainous north end of Fiordland National Park is the classic fiord - a deep water inlet between steep sided high mountains.  Milford Sound is a middle-sized fiord at around 13 kms in length and it is famous for its dramatic scenery, especially Mitre Peak.  This fiord is the most accessible of Fiordland National Park’s 14 fiords and it can be reached by bus, car or flight connections from Queenstown.

Doubtful Sound is located in the heart of Fiordland National Park where the mountains are still very impressive but not as high as Milford Sound.  Doubtful Sound is three times longer and  has a sea surface area roughly ten times larger than Milford Sound.  Its three arms are Hall, Crooked and First Arm.  It is famous for its wilderness scenery and wildlife sightings.  To get to Doubtful Sound visitors first take a launch trip across Lake Manapouri and drive over Wilmot Pass.

Visitors with enough time choose to visit both fiords as they have different characters.

What weather can I expect in Fiordland?

Fiordland’s weather is what gives the region its unique character. Rainfall is what makes Fiordland a land of lakes, rivers, streams, waterfalls and fiords. Visitors should always be prepared to enjoy some rainfall during their stay. It is recommended to bring sensible clothing for cool and wet weather to fully appreciate your stay.

The temperatures you can expect in the different seasons are as follows:

  • Summer  (December-February) 19-23 Celsius / 66 - 73 Fahrenheit
  • Autumn  (March-May) 8-18 Celsius / 46  - 64 Fahrenheit
  • Winter  (June-August) 5-9 Celsius /  41  - 48 Fahrenheit
  • Spring  (September-November) 10-19 Celsius  / 50   - 66 Fahrenheit

Is it worth going to Milford/Doubtful Sounds on a wet day?

Many say you have not seen Fiordland unless you have seen it in the rain.  When it rains in Fiordland the landscape is dramatic - rock faces stream with waterfalls, mist hangs around the tops of the mountains and rivers and streams rage.  From a dry comfortable vantage point on the bus or boat, this landscape is spectacular for sightseeing.

How much luggage can I take on my overnight cruise?

We recommend each passenger brings no more than a carry-on sized bag due to space restrictions in the cabins. For a list of what to bring please see the 'more info' section or your booking confirmation.

While we cannot guarantee you will see wildlife, sightings of fur seals are reasonably common in both Doubtful and Milford Sounds.  A pod of bottlenose dolphins resides in Doubtful Sound so you have a good chance of seeing these fascinating mammals, and in Milford Sound dolphins are occasional visitors.  In both sounds the rare Fiordland crested penguin can at times be observed.

Throughout Fiordland the fiords are officially mapped as sounds.  Strictly speaking, they should be called fiords.

A fiord is a glaciated valley - typically narrow and steep-sided - that has been flooded by the sea after the glacier’s retreat.  A sound, on the other hand, is a river valley flooded by the sea following a rise in sea levels or depression of the land, or a combination of both.

Is the Manapouri Underground Power Station accessible?

The Manapouri Underground Power Station visit is CLOSED indefinitely due to maintenance by operators Meridian Energy. We are not permitted to access the Power Station for tours during this time. The Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise tour will still operate without the visit underground to the Powerstation.

Online transactions/prices are conducted in what currency?

All prices and transactions on the RealNZ website are in New Zealand dollars (NZD).  This is specified on the Terms & Conditions page.

What happens if there is an emergency?

Our staff are trained to deal with incidents and in case of an emergency you should listen to their instructions. We have a portable defibrillator on each of our overnight cruise vessels (Milford Mariner, Milford Wanderer and Fiordland Navigator). In addition to this we also have portable defibrillators at the following locations: •    Milford Sound Visitor Terminal •    RealNZ Visitor Centre, Manapouri •    Cavern House (Te Anau Glowworm Caves) •    Colonel’s Homestead Restaurant, Walter Peak •    TSS Earnslaw Vintage Steamship •    Stewart Island Ferry (Bluff - Oban - Bluff)

Can my dietary requirements be accommodated?

Yes, dietary requirements can be catered for. Please provide detailed information regarding your dietary requirements when making a booking.

Will I be sharing a quad room?

There is a possibility that you might share a quad room with other customers, and it’s important to note these rooms are equipped with a curtain partition instead of a door. Please be aware of this configuration when booking and please contact us if you need further clarification.

Is the boat accessible for individuals with impaired mobility?

When we are informed in advance about guests with hindered mobility, we make every effort to mitigate the impact by assigning rooms in proximity to the main areas. However, it’s important to note that our vessels are not optimally equipped for potential needs. While we extend a warm welcome to individuals with impaired mobility, all our vessel’s doorways feature a sea sill, there are no ramps within the boat, and a flight of stairs separates rooms from the main saloon.

What is the best room type for families or children on an overnight cruise?

Our t win sleeping compartments provide the best privacy for travelling with your family and children. A twin room is a private room for two people with two single beds.

T here are so many things to do in Fiordland National Park in New Zealand. With imposing mountains, serene lakes, and thriving rainforests it's a paradise for lovers of the great outdoors.

The 12,000 square kilometers of protected area lies on the southwest coast of New Zealand’s South Island. It's the most visited National Park in New Zealand, mainly down to the star attraction — Milford Sound. But there are plenty of other things to do in Fiordland National Park that make it well worth spending some more time here.

Top Things To Do In Fiordland National Park, New Zealand

For starters, Fiordland National Park was made one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Te Wahipounamu (South West New Zealand) and has a whole host of natural attractions to keep visitors busy.

From stunning waterfalls to cruises, scenic flights, and multi-day hikes, here are some of the top things to do and see.

Milford Sound Piopiotahi

The number one reason that so many travelers make their way to this part of New Zealand's South Island is to visit the iconic Milford Sound. Milford Sound Piopiotahi as it's locally known is home to stunning natural fiords, Māori legends, and epic scenery that leaves lasting memories.

See Rahotu / Mitre Peak, spot dolphins, penguins, and seals within the Milford Sound Marine Reserve, and feel the spray from one of the many waterfalls lining the steep mountainsides.

There are so many options when it comes to choosing how to visit Milford Sound; boat cruises, scenic flights, kayak trips, and dive trips, but to make the most of the epic scenery try to spend at least two days exploring here.

  • Book a Full-Day Milford Sound Tour with Cruise and Walks from Te Anau for $112 per person with Viator.

Many tours are available as day trips from Queenstown, but to save on transport costs travelers can make their own way to the wharf or book a trip from Te Anau.

Mirror Lakes

One of the best things to do in Fiordland National Park is to walk around Mirror Lakes. The perfectly calm waters offer enchanting reflections of the Earl Mountains beyond.

The flat 400-meter (1,300-foot) boardwalk is perfect for families and walkers of all abilities, so this activity is open to all who visit. It's a truly stunning stop that's easy to fit into a Fiordland itinerary as it's right on the main road.

  • To get there, look for the signpost on Milford Road — about 56 kilometers (34.8 miles) from Te Anau on the way towards Milford Sound.

Try to save this one for a clear sunny day, as bad weather can make the reflections dull or even sometimes disappear altogether!

Doubtful Sound

The lesser-known fiord in New Zealand doesn't get the attention of its brother, but it is no less magical. Its nickname “the sound of silence” comes from the fact that it gets so much fewer visitors than Milford Sound, so it's the perfect place to escape the crowds — especially in summer.

Doubtful Sound is the second-largest fiord in Fiordland National Park and is full of stunning scenery and wildlife. There's a really high chance of spotting dolphins, and the rare Fiordland Crested Penguin as there is usually just one boat on the water at a time.

  • To visit Doubtful Sound, take a 30-minute drive from Te Anau to Manapouri where you will catch a boat across the lake and take a coach over Wilmot Pass to Doubtful Sound.

It's a good idea to book a tour in advance as there are limited sailings. Take a look at the Doubtful Sound Wilderness Day Cruise from Manapouri in more detail — prices start from $140 per person.

The Kepler Track

One of the best hikes in Fiordland National Park is the stunning Kepler Track, starting just minutes away from Te Anau. The epic 60-kilometer-long (37-mile) 3 to 4-day loop track has been named one of 'New Zealand’s 10 Great Walks.'

The winding trails creep along the shoreline of Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri, through Kea-filled forests, past nature-rich wetlands, and towards steep alpine viewpoints.

The hike requires reasonable fitness levels with around 6 to 7 hours of hiking each day, overnight stops can be had at Luxmore Hut, Iris Burn Hut and Campsite, and Moturau Hut.

It's also possible to break the hike down into smaller sections if travelers are short on time.

The stunning and serene Lake Gunn is one of New Zealand's most beautiful lakes . The deep lake is elevated at 480 meters (1,575 feet) above sea level, and surrounded by jagged mountains and mossy trees.

To explore it fully, take the 45-minute Lake Gunn walk along the stony shoreline, stopping to spot the multitude of bird life — which includes the rare Paradise Ducks.

Travelers can also choose to stop overnight at Cascade Creek Campsite (must be booked in advance).

  • The Lake Gunn walking track starts at the Cascade Creek parking lot — 40 minutes from Milford Sound on the SH94.
  • The walk is stroller and wheelchair friendly, making it a great day out for the whole family.

Routeburn Track

The mighty Routeburn Track links Fiordland National Park and Mt Aspiring National Park. It's 31 kilometers long (19 miles) and takes around three days to walk.

Another of New Zealand's Great Walks, hikers can expect to find iconic views of Fiordland’s highest peak, Mt Tutuko, and epic scenery from the highpoint at Harris Saddle, 1,255 meters (4,117 feet) above sea level.

Lonely Planet named the Routeburn Track one of the "Top 10 classic hikes in the world,” so as you'd expect it gets a fair amount of attention from visitors.

For more information, including safety advice and seasonal restrictions, visit the Department of Conservation (DOC) website for New Zealand .

For a more bite-size hike, take the starting section of the Routeburn Track towards Key Summit. The Key Summit Track is just a 20-minute uphill climb from the Routeburn Track and offers awesome views of the Humboldt and Darran Mountains.

It's a fantastic hike that's not too challenging, so it can easily be enjoyed by all.

  • It's about an hour’s drive from Te Anau towards Milford Sound to the starting point at The Divide parking lot in Fiordland National Park.
  • Take the Routeburn Track for around an hour until you reach signs for the Key Summit Track.
  • The Key Summit Track takes around three hours in total, with a distance of 3.4 kilometers each way; the return is via the same track.

Te Anau Glow Worm Caves

Easily one of the best things to do in Fiordland National Park for families is the Glow Worm Caves near Te Anau.

Take a guided tour through 12,000-year-old caves to discover how Te Anau got its name, as well as the bioluminescent creatures that call these dark caverns home.

The caves are interesting enough in themselves, holding an intricate network of limestone passages with stalactites and underground rivers and waterfalls.

  • The Te Anau Glow Worm Caves Tour takes just over two hours and prices start at $60 per person.

The average temperature inside the cave is 9 degrees Celsius (48 degrees Fahrenheit) so it's essential to wear warm layers and bring a fleece or jacket.

Hollyford Track

The 4 to 6-day Hollyford Track is perhaps one of the most underrated hikes in Fiordland National Park.

It is less promoted than the Routeburn or Kepler Tracks but has equally stunning scenery, well-kept facilities, and far fewer visitors. It's a real hidden gem for hikers with views of Lake Alabaster, Lake McKerrow, and the abandoned buildings of Jamestown.

Another plus point is that the hut accommodation is much less expensive than on the Great Walks, and planning the route is easy and straightforward.

Like the other walks transport can be arranged to make it a one-way route, or it's possible to return via the same path.

  • The Hollyford Track starts about 87 kilometers (54 miles) from Te Anau on Lower Hollyford Road (a side road off of the Milford Sound Road).

As there are no alpine sections, this hike can be a great option for the winter — but pay attention to local advice regarding flooding.

Lake Marian

This alpine lake's emerald waters look all too appealing after a sweaty hike in the mountains, but be warned — it's cold! The glacial tributaries that feed this high-altitude lake mean the water temperature isn't much above freezing.

Situated in a steep valley formed by glaciers over thousands of years, the crystal-clear waters mirror the rugged mountains that surround Lake Marian. It's a real show-stopper and a fantastic place to get pictures.

  • Visitors can either take the 20-minute track to see some of the cascading waterfalls that surround the lake or opt for the longer 3-hour return track to Lake Marian.

Go On A Scenic Flight

When it comes to the best way of seeing Fiordland National Park, getting out and into nature is hard to top. But seeing the landscape from above brings a whole new dimension and scale to the South Island.

Most scenic flights depart from Queenstown with options including fixed-wing, helicopter, fly-cruise to Milford Sound, and glacier landings. Expect to get close-up views of dramatic waterfalls, soar over impressive fiords, and pass by snow-capped mountain peaks.

  • This Milford Sound Scenic Flight and Nature Cruise takes in the top sights in the area on a small group tour with a Naturalist Guide. Tours last for around four and a half hours and start from $362 per person.

Book flights in advance — preferably near the beginning of a trip — so there’s plenty of time to rebook if the weather isn’t great (if the aircraft cannot fly due to bad weather transfer to another day for free or get a full refund).

Best Time To Visit Fiordland National Park, New Zealand

There is no bad time to visit Fiordland National Park but as the landscape is defined by water it's best to always be prepared for rain. It rains on average for around 200 days per year and is one of the wettest places in New Zealand.

It's advisable to always pack a raincoat. December to February are the warmest months of the year with temperatures reaching up to 30 degrees Celsius, but in winter Fiordland is made even more beautiful by the appearance of snow on the mountains.

There is an average annual rainfall of seven meters which can mean that in winter some roads are closed due to flooding.

Best Ways To Get Around Fiordland National Park, New Zealand

It's best to stay in one of the local towns rather than travel from the adventure capital of Queenstown . Te Anau and Manapouri have plenty of accommodation options, restaurants, and shops.

Rental cars, camper vans, and bus services are available from Queenstown Airport or catch a chartered flight.

It's possible to get around on guided tours and public transport, but to fully explore the area it's best to hire a car. Milford Road is known as New Zealand's most scenic driving route and is an attraction in itself.

Te Anau is a two-hour drive from Queenstown, and it's a further two-hour drive to Milford Sound. Though Queenstown looks close to Milford Sound on a map, it's a lot further by road.

Where To Eat In Fiordland National Park, New Zealand

Head to the Sandfly café for breakfast in Te Anau, the amazing location offers epic views towards the mountains from the outdoor seating area. Grab pancakes and bacon, a fry up, or a breakfast burger, and wash it all down with a hot coffee.

For lunch, Ditto is one of the most popular spots to eat in Te Anau. Choose between bao buns, loaded fries, sushi bowls and delicious dumplings. There are plenty of dairy/gluten-free options as well as vegetarian and vegan dishes. Find it opposite the Te Anau Gardens (92 Town Centre, Te Anau 9600, New Zealand).

Do as the locals do for dinner and pop into The Fat Duck Gastropub . Located in the center of town it's easy to see why many consider this to be one of the best places to eat in Te Anau. With friendly servers, epic portions, and impeccable food, the Fat Duck impresses anyone who visits. The wide selection of beer and wine also means that happy hour can get pretty busy!

For somewhere quieter, the Black Dog Bar offers Fiordland Lagers, local wines, and whiskeys in a small intimate setting. There are also food platters on offer for hungry visitors.
