An all-out brawl that broke out between dozens of passengers aboard the Carnival Magic cruise ship was sparked over allegations of cheating while on the trip, according to an eyewitness passenger who shared video of the fight with Fox News Digital.

Theresa James, who said she is a travel agent, told Fox News Digital that the fight started just before 2 a.m. on the ship’s fifth floor, where a dance club and casino are located.

An alleged threesome between passengers had upset their significant others when they learned of the rendezvous, according to James, who said she witnessed the fight from her door.

Beer bottles were smashed, and a woman may have been cut during the chaos, James said.

The brawl lasted about an hour, according to the travel agent, and took the parties involved from the fifth floor to the ship’s first floor, which James described as a huge distance. She said the altercation wasn’t physical the whole time, and an estimated 60 people may have been involved.

James credited Carnival and its security team for jumping in and bringing the situation under control.

She described the guests involved in the fight as "ignorant fools acting stupid" and said the situation could have been worse if not for security.

The ship arrived Tuesday morning with New York police waiting as it docked. Carnival said the ship docked in Manhattan as scheduled.

It's unclear if  anyone was arrested  or if New York or New Jersey authorities would handle it or another jurisdiction since it may have happened over international waters.

Meanwhile, James said that while the cruise got intense toward the end, it was an overall great vacation, and she has already booked another one with Carnival for August.

Dance Floor Brawl on NYC-Bound Cruise Sparks Coast Guard Escort, NYPD Probe

"thankfully no serious injuries were reported and our onboard security team intervened," carnival magic said in a statement, published june 28, 2022 • updated on june 28, 2022 at 1:26 pm.

Police are investigating after an all-out brawl erupted on a cruise ship as it headed back to New York overnight, authorities confirmed Tuesday after it safely arrived. Up to 60 people were ultimately involved in the fray over international waters, cops said.

The eight-day cruise aboard the Carnival Magic left its New York City-New Jersey hub on June 20, stopping in Dominicana, Turks and Caicos and a private island in the Bahamas before turning around and heading back toward the East Coast.

24/7 New York news stream: Watch NBC 4 free wherever you are

It's not clear what sparked the fight, but PIX 11 reported it started between two people on a dance floor and intensified as others joined in the fray. Anywhere from 40 to 60 people were involved in the fight by the time it was broken up, officials said.

Cruise officials notified the Coast Guard, which launched a small boat from Staten Island to escort the ship the rest of the way to its Pier 88 dock. Members of the NYPD, which the Coast Guard had notified, were standing by when it arrived.

There was no immediate word on possible arrests. Jurisdictional questions around where the ship was at the time of the altercation -- was it in international waters? New Jersey waters? New York waters? -- have yet to be answered so it's not entirely clear just yet which department or agency will lead the investigation.

Carnival Magic acknowledged the incident, saying, "a number of guests were involved in an altercation in a nightclub" as the ship returned to Manhattan.

"Thankfully no serious injuries were reported and our onboard security team intervened," the cruise line's statement continued. "The ship arrived as scheduled this morning and authorities were notified and met the ship to interview suspects and witnesses and conduct an investigation."

The Carnival Magic was built in 2011 and is registered in Panama. It is more than 1,000 feet long and sails to the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada/New England and the Caribbean, from Port Canaveral, Norfolk, Miami and New York, on cruises that run anywhere from two to nine days. It can accommodate up to 3,690 guests.

A brawl that broke out onboard a Carnival cruise ship earlier this week was reportedly sparked by allegations of cheating.

The brawl on the cruise ship bound for New York took place around 2am on 28 June on the ship’s fifth floor, where the dance floor and casino were located.

An eyewitness told Fox News Digital that the fight broke out over allegations of a threesome between passengers that had upset their significant others.

Theresa James, a travel agent, said she saw the fight from her door.

She said that beer bottles were smashed and one of the three passengers may have been injured during the fight, which lasted about an hour and eventually included some 60 people.

Ms James said that the fight was not physical the whole time. But it started from the fifth floor and went to the first floor, which according to Ms James, was a long distance.

She said that that the guests involved in the fight were “ignorant fools acting stupid”, adding that the situation could have worsened if security had not been called in.

Eventually, the ship’s security personnel had to call in the US Coast Guard to break up the fight.

Another passenger, who uses the Twitter handle “nyeem0,” said he was “at the bar listening to my own music sipping a Shirley Temple” when the brawl “broke out of nowhere”, reported The New York Post.

He said some passengers were “injured and cut up from glass” and that “most, if not all” of the ship’s security guards rushed to the club to stop the violence.

“It was the last night, so I guess they wanted to go out with a bang.”

Authorities on the ship said the cruise docked in Manhattan as scheduled on Tuesday morning .

While police were waiting for the cruise’s arrival, it is not clear whether any arrests have been made in the case.

VIDEO: Massive Brawl Breaks Out on Carnival Magic Cruise Ship

A massive fight breaks out on the Carnival Magic involving up to 60 passengers following allegations of cheating and threesomes

The huge fight was allegedly caused by a threesome amongst passengers that upset the displeased partners of the participants.

A fight involving up to 60 participants broke out aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship returning to New York City following an eight-day Caribbean cruise this week.

Initial reports indicated the fight onboard the Carnival Magic was in response to allegations of cheating and threesomes amongst the participants. Units from the New York City Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard were on hand as the vessel docked in New York, but they did not board the ship due to jurisdictional concerns.

“Last night while Carnival Magic was returning to New York, a number of guests were involved in an altercation in a nightclub. Thankfully no serious injuries were reported, and our onboard security team intervened,” Carnival Cruise Lines said in a statement regarding the incident. “The ship arrived as scheduled this morning and shoreside law enforcement authorities were notified and met the ship to interview suspects and witnesses and conduct an investigation.”

The Carnival Magic cruise ship

One passenger who witness the fight told  Fox News Digital  the melee broke out shortly before 2 a.m. on the fifth floor where a casino and dance club are located. Official reports indicate only that the fight took place sometime before 5:20 a.m. Theresa James, who is also a travel agent, said the fight took place just outside her fifth-floor cabin between “ignorant fools acting stupid” and lasted around an hour, taking place over multiple floors. She noted the fight was not physical during the entire hour, but that beer bottles were thrown in addition to punches, and that at least one woman might have suffered injuries.

Local broadcaster  WPIX  said the fight began with two people on the dance floor. James told  Fox  the cause of the fight was an alleged threesome between cheating passengers that upset the participant's partners.

Video of the incident showed a violent free-for-all amongst both male and female passengers. In one clip, a man appears to drag a woman by the hair across the floor while others are throwing punches.

Jurisdictional questions prevented police from boarding the vessel, but the NYPD has opened an investigation.

“We wanted to make sure that when the individuals got off the boat there was no further disputes on the streets in Manhattan,” an NYPD spokesperson told  Patch . ‘They were there to expedite the disembarkation process.'”

The Carnival Magic was returning from an eight-day cruise to the Caribbean with stops in Dominicana, Turks and Caicos, and a private Bahamian island.

A Jealous Threesome Caused This 60-Person Brawl On Carnival Cruise, U.S. Coast Guard Involved

A jealous threesome leading to a 60-person brawl was certainly not on the summer 2022 bingo card, but here we are.

The massive brawl broke out on Carnival’s Magic cruise on June 28, the last night of the ship’s eight-day Caribbean voyage.

According to cruise passenger Theresa James, the fight started before 2 a.m. on the ship’s fifth floor, where the dance club and casino are located. Allegations of a threesome and cheating between passengers sparked the drama when their significant others found out about their sexcapade.

RELATED: 10 Hotels Around The World That Will Turn Up Your Sex Life

The fight lasted more than an hour, and beer bottles were reportedly smashed during the incident. While no serious injuries were reported, James says one woman may have suffered minor injuries related to cuts from the ordeal.

The fight was apparently so big that security had to call help from the U.S. Coast Guard to help escort the ship to shore.

Even with the significant disruption, Carnival Cruise tells the New York Post that the ship docked back in Manhattan on schedule.

An Investigation Has Been Launched

The New York Police Department is currently investigating the incident. No arrests have been made at this time.

It’s unclear if the brawl happened in New York, New Jersey, or international waters, complicating criminal jurisdiction.

According to James, she says aside from the incident; the trip was an overall good experience.

And if we could offer some words of wisdom: please don’t keep your partners in the dark. You certainly don’t want to be the passengers to ruin everyone else’s vacation. Keep us out of the group chat.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A large fight that broke out on a cruise ship resulting in an emergency response near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on Tuesday, broke out over cheating accusations and an alleged threesome, a witness told Fox News Digital .

The fight started when two individuals accused their partners of cheating in a threesome, the witness said.

An estimated 40 to 60 people were involved in the melee on the dance floor of a nightclub on the ship in the waters adjacent to the bridge, multiple sources previously told the Advance/SiLive.com

Theresa James, a travel agent, told the outlet that fight occurred in a nightclub on the fifth floor of the Carnival Magic ship at around 2 a.m.

Those involved began shoving each other and smashing beer bottles. A woman may have been sliced in the incident, according to James.

“Ignorant fools acting stupid,” she said.

The ship’s security team tried to break up the fight, but eventually called the U.S. Coast Guard to assist in the situation.

The U.S. Coast Guard was alerted around 4 a.m. to a report of a fight on the Carnival cruise ship Magic in the vicinity of the span, according to a spokesman for the agency.

The Coast Guard escorted the ship to Pier 88 in Manhattan where members of the NYPD met the vessel and passengers disembarked without further incident, according to multiple sources.

Another passenger, under the Twitter handle @nyeem0, detailed some passengers were “injured and cut up from glass” and that almost all of the ship’s security guards responded to the club to stop the fight.

“On Monday night while Carnival Magic was returning to New York, a number of guests were involved in an altercation in a nightclub,” said a statement from Carnival Corporation. “Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported and our onboard security team intervened. The ship arrived as scheduled Tuesday morning and law-enforcement authorities were notified and met the ship to interview suspects and witnesses and conduct an investigation.”

Carnival to probe "all aspects" of cruise ship brawling

February 19, 2018 / 8:21 AM EST / CBS/AP

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Carnival Cruise Line has said "all aspects" of a series of incidents on a South Pacific cruise that was interrupted by brawls will be investigated, including the response of security personnel whom some passengers say made matters worse by using heavy-handed tactics. The violence was apparently caused by a 23-member family, members of which threw punches at other passengers.

Some of the passengers said they locked themselves in cabins to escape three days of violence on the Carnival Legend, which arrived in its home port of Melbourne on Saturday, a day after a family was offloaded in an unscheduled stop in Eden, New South Wales in Australia.

Police said they were investigating the incident and the operator apologized for the "disruptive behavior" by the group that was removed from the cruise liner. One passenger told  9 News Australia  the brawl was a "bloodbath."

The "big Italian family" spent days attacking Australians aboard the ship, with people "getting strangled and punched up," passenger Lisa Bolitho told reporters.

carnival-legend-brawl-family.jpg

"Very violent, they were full-on attacks," she said.

She also questioned the ship's management, quoting the captain as saying, "'What do you want me to do about it -- throw them overboard?'"

Cellphone video footage purportedly of the brawl on Friday shows security guards fighting and trying to separate passengers amid shouting and kicking.

The Reuters news agency reported Monday that Carnival had released a brief statement, saying "all aspects including the security response" would be investigated. The statement did not provide a timeline for the company's investigation.

Videos posted online from inside the ship appear to show Carnival security personnel beating an individual on the ground and attempting to grab cell phones from other passengers as they recorded the events.

Bolitho's son Jarrah said he was among those targeted and fled and locked himself in the cabin with his mother.

"I was watching the fight and one guy came up to me and said 'Do you want to go too bro?'" he said, adding the offenders were in their late teens and early 20s. "My mum had to drag me away from it all. They were trying to pick on any Aussie they could find."

Carnival Cruise Line said it was offering guests a 25 percent future cruise credit as a "goodwill gesture" but some passengers criticized the offer.

"I won't be travelling Carnival ever again so a 25 percent off a future cruise in my eyes is unacceptable," Mark Morrison said.

The cruise liner with more than 2,000 passengers was on a 10-day trip from Melbourne to New Caledonia, a French territory in the South Pacific.

Carnival cruise ship rescues 25 people stranded off the coast of Mexico

fight on carnival cruise ship

A Carnival Cruise Line ship responded to a call from the U.S. Coast Guard and rescued 25 people stranded in a small boat off the coast of Mexico, the company announced Saturday.

The 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance had left Long Beach, California, on Friday and was heading toward Ensenada Mexico for a three-day sailing when the cruise ship's officers were informed by the Coast Guard "about a distress call involving a small vessel," a news release said.

The ship immediately routed toward the location of the vessel, provided by the USCG, and "quickly" rescued all 25 people on board, including three children, the company said.

The U.S. Coast Guard did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment.

The rescued group was welcomed onto the cruise ship and given food, water, and medical assistance. Carnival coordinated with the Coast Guard to hand off the group.

The incident did not disrupt the Carnival Radiance's schedule, the company announced.

Posen carnival shut down early after 'large fight' leads to multiple arrests, police say

POSEN, Ill. (WLS) -- A carnival was shut down early in the south suburbs Sunday evening after a "large fight" broke out.

Posen Park Fest 2024 was closed due to safety concerns from the altercation, police said.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Police made multiple arrests in connection to the fight, officials said.

Posen's mayor told ABC7 that "civil unrest" broke out around 6 p.m. and the unrest continued for almost two hours.

The carnival was originally supposed to be open until 10 p.m.

"We regret to inform you that due to a large fight at the carnival this evening, we have made the difficult decision to shut it down for the safety of all attendees," Posen police said in a statement to residents.

Residents were asked to avoid the area near the carnival grounds at 147th and Sacramento.

Cell phone video captured large crowds with some people running into the street.

Officer continued to work to clear the area and "disperse the crowd and restore order" after the carnival was shut down.

No further information about the large fight or if there were any injuries was immediately available.

Carnival Cruise Line shares news on expanded passenger bans

O n an individual level, it’s hard to get banned from cruising on a specific cruise line and even harder to earn an industry-wide ban. If you do something wrong, like have a fight, or break safety rules like using an open flame (like smoking or lighting a candle) in your room, you might get thrown off the ship or even arrested in the next port.

Last year, for example, I was sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas watching my friend’s toddler while he and his wife played laser tag. The little guy and I were playing on the floor of the Crown Lounge (the cruise line’s dedicated space for top-tier loyalty program members) when my buddy and his wife came in flanked by a variety of uniformed security officers.

My friend was bleeding slightly from his head and I learned that after taunting him multiple times, a teenager had punched him in the face. After a lengthy interview and security watching a tape of the incident, my rather shaken friend was asked if he wanted the teenager arrested in Nassau the next day.

He passed on that, thinking that it was unfair to his parents. Security also offered to kick him off the cruise, but that too seemed like a punishment for the parents, so ultimately the punching teen was only allowed to leave his cabin in the company of an adult.

So, while the potential punishment was severe, no ban was considered. Carnival Cruise Line  ( CCL )  has banned passengers for life for violating its onboard drug rules (you can’t bring CBD or marijuana even if it’s legal where you live), but even that happens very rarely.

The cruise line does, however, have to comply with the rules in the countries where they operate. That has meant banning passengers from several places around the world.

So do all of Carnival's rivals, including Royal Caribbean  ( RCL ) .

Carnival explains why certain passengers are banned

While the rules Carnival is citing would impact Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Disney Cruise, MSC Cruises, and many other lines, the actual specifics vary depending upon each company’s operational footprint.

Carnival Cruise Lines, which includes the Princess and Holland America brands, shared an email with its travel agent partners that’s specific to its operations.

“Carnival Corporation & plc (Carnival) is committed to compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. We are writing to specifically reinforce our adherence to all applicable sanctions and trade control laws and regulations, including but not limited to those imposed by the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union (collectively “Sanctions Laws”),” the cruise line's letter said.

Sanction laws prevent companies from doing business with certain countries.

“In response to the adoption of increased Sanctions Laws following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, all Carnival brands previously implemented a policy to no longer sell cruises, including through any travel agent partners, to guests resident in Russia, Belarus, the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions of Ukraine, in addition to existing restrictions that prevent sales to guests resident in Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Syria, and the Crimea region of Ukraine,” the company shared in its email.

The cruise line needs its travel agent partners to be diligent about and explained what it requires.

“We would like to reiterate the importance of ensuring accurate guest details are input into our booking systems; in particular we require that you collect full details of each guest’s residency address at the time of booking and input this accurately into our booking system. We also require that you input these details for existing guest bookings. Please also ensure that you continue to implement appropriate technical measures to prevent guests from booking via your websites when located in Restricted Countries/Regions,” the cruise line shared.

Carnival has a code of conduct

While people who reside in the banned region could, in theory, move, passengers who get banned for behavior have no method of protesting that ban. The cruise line does not list all the reasons it could ban a passenger, but it does have a code of conduct that lays some of it out.

"Our experience has taught us that everyone has a better time when children are supervised, noise in the hallways is kept to a minimum, guests follow queues, and that a spirit of community and neighborliness is shown by all. Consistent with our commitment to safety, disruptive behavior is not tolerated and any guest whose conduct affects the comfort, enjoyment, safety, or well-being of other guests or crew will be disembarked at their own expense and banned from sailing on Carnival in the future," the cruise line shared.

Breaking news, why royal caribbean does not have to share details of passenger who died on world’s largest cruise ship.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

The public may never know the full details surrounding the death of a passenger who reportedly jumped from the world’s largest cruise ship earlier this month.

Under maritime law, Royal Caribbean is not obligated to release the findings of its investigation into the death of the passenger on the Icon of the Seas.

The law allows the company, and other cruise lines — to downplay details that might cast them in a negative light, said Florida-based lawyer Keith Brais, whose firm specializes in injuries and incidents at sea.

A man died on Sunday during a voyage on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas.

“They wouldn’t even need to report on how much alcohol might have been involved if it makes them look bad,” he told The Post.

Royal Caribbean has not commented on the specific details of the incident and has only expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased.

The US Coast Guard in Miami said it assisted with the search, but it is not involved in the investigation into the passenger’s death.

Deaths on cruise ships are rare — but unique circumstances of a floating city in international waters — the Icon of the Seas can carry up to 7,000 people — means that they are not handled like deaths on land.

What happens to someone who dies on a cruise ship?

When an unidentified man jumped from Royal Caribbean’s new 1,200-foot-long Icon of the Seas on the first day of a seven-day voyage on Sunday, a rescue boat from the ship found him and brought him back aboard.

Passengers were initially told that the man was in the intensive care unit, but the Coast Guard confirmed to The Post that he died.

The man's body was retrieved by the cruise line with help from the US Coast Guard.

The Icon of the Seas proceeded on its voyage around the Gulf of Mexico after the incident.

It’s not clear where the man’s body is now, but it was likely taken to the ship’s morgue until it can be transferred to authorities on land, Brais said.

The ship has stopped in Honduras and Mexico, and is set for one more port of call in the Bahamas before it returns to Miami on Saturday.

Who investigates deaths at sea?

While the US Coast Guard assisted Royal Caribbean in the search and rescue of the man who fell overboard, officials said it was the cruise line’s rescue boat that ultimately found and transported the body, and it would be up to the company to investigate the case.

Brais said Royal Caribbean is not required to release its findings to the public, adding that it is rare for a company to publish anything that could make them seem liable for the death.

“As a result, the cruise line is likely to find that the passenger’s death resulted from ‘natural causes,’ even if the totality of the circumstances at hand suggests otherwise,” according to his law firm.

Braise noted that in his decades of experience in the industry and law, alcohol is involved in the majority of cases.

Royal Caribbean did not respond to The Post’s request for comment.

Royal Caribbean is investigating the cause of death.

Does the family have any recourse about the investigation?

The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety act, which was passed in 2010, mandates that cruises not only follow strict regulations to ensure passengers are safe, but to also track crimes aboard their ships.

In regards to Sunday’s incident, Brais said the man’s family should look at whether Royal had the proper barriers in place to keep people from falling overboard and if they had Man-Overboard cameras installed that alerted them to the incident.

Even if Royal Caribbean was found to be negligent in the man’s death, the compensation could be limited to just covering funeral expenses under the Death of the High Seas Act, Brais added.

Boats were deployed to search for the man's body on Sunday.

How common are deaths on cruise ships?

It can be difficult to determine how many deaths have occurred on cruise ships as it’s up to the companies to report such incidents.

According to the Department of Transportation’s Cruise Line Incident reports, there have only been four deaths aboard major cruise lines between January 2020 to March 2024.

Despite these numbers, Brais said it’s not rare for such man overboard stories to make headlines once every three weeks.

According to cruise expert Dr. Ross Klein, who maintains a master list of media reports of incidents where passengers have gone overboard, there have been at least 410 people who have fallen off cruises or ferries in the last 24 years.

Icon of the Seas death is the second so far this year aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise. In April, a drunk 20-year-old passenger reportedly jumped to his death from the Liberty of the Seas following a dispute with his father.

Carnival passengers recount ‘nightmare’ cruise as storm floods ship

Videos showed the Carnival Sunshine cabins and hallways flooding and ceilings leaking

Matthew Branham and his fiancée, Madison Davis, were lying by a Carnival Sunshine pool on Friday aboard a cruise returning to Charleston, S.C., from the Bahamas when an announcement came over the loudspeaker. The captain was expecting rougher weather that evening, but there was nothing to worry about. So Branham and Davis didn’t worry.

As the day went on, “We noticed it started getting cooler in the afternoon — much, much cooler,” said Branham, 25, of Castlewood, Va. “And then it was like a switch was flipped, and it literally turned into a nightmare.”

En route back to Charleston Friday night into Saturday, the Carnival Sunshine navigated into a strong storm system that battered the southeast over the holiday weekend. Videos emerged on social media showing cabins and hallways flooding, shop floors littered with destroyed merchandise and leaking ceilings . Passenger Brad Morrell snapped a photo of an automated instrument map reporting a 69 knot, or 79 mph, wind.

#CarnivalSunshine : Due to return to Charleston, South Carolina this Saturday, May 27, 2023, has been delayed due to severe weather. The ship is currently off the South Carolina coast and holding position, unable to return to the port because of high winds & rough seas. #cruise 🙏🏼 pic.twitter.com/2B6HlAn2yD — ∼Marietta (@MariettaDaviz) May 28, 2023

Carnival said in a statement that the weather was unexpectedly strong, causing conditions that were rougher than forecast, but that its fleet operations center team, which relies on outside meteorology resources for itinerary planning, “coordinated to keep the ship in its safest location.”

“Attempting to sail out of the large front could have been dangerous,” the statement continued. “The ship proceeded to the port as soon as the weather began to clear.”

Strong Southeast storm slams Carolinas

Carnival said the captain made “several announcements about the weather and the delay it caused in returning to Charleston, asking guests to use extra precaution while walking around the ship.” Additionally, “some of the worst weather occurred in the overnight hours when announcements are not typically made, but guests and crew were safe.”

The ship’s medical staff did help a “small number” of guests and crew members who needed minor assistance following the storm. Despite the significant damage and a delay in schedule, Carnival Sunshine embarked on its next five-day Bahama sailing on Saturday.

From their sea-view room, Branham and Davis watched as waves surged over their window and braced themselves as the 892-foot-long ship lurched in the storm.

“Waves were hitting the boat so hard that it was like an earthquake experience, jarring you like a really rough roller coaster — even in the middle floor,” Branham said.

They were told to stay in their cabins. Meanwhile, Branham said, TVs were falling off walls, and glassware was sliding off shelves and shattering on the floor. “You could not stand up in your room,” he said. “You could be thrown from the bed.”

They packed up their belongings when their floor started to flood and took shelter in a main lobby area.

“All of the employees were sprinting downstairs with life vests,” Branham said. “There were little kids besides us screaming and crying and throwing fits.”

Throughout the storm, Branham wondered why there weren’t more announcements from Carnival staff. Besides the warning of rougher seas earlier Friday and one Saturday morning after they’d weathered the storm, Branham said they weren’t given any official updates on their situation. When he asked workers what was going on, they told him not to worry.

“But you see rooms flooded, and you can pick up a handful of sand and you’re kind of like, ‘What in the world? Why is nobody telling us anything?’” Branham said.

Jim Walker, a maritime lawyer and cruise industry legal expert, says his firm has been contacted by some Carnival Sunshine passengers who were injured during the storm, including a man who says he was struck by a door and broke his foot. Others have asked him about the potential for a class-action lawsuit.

While Walker said passengers should make their complaints known to Carnival, he doesn’t believe filing a lawsuit would be an efficient next step. Instead, impacted passengers can ask Carnival for a refund or a credit for another cruise, although there’s no guarantee the cruise line will grant such requests.

Pete Peterson, owner of Storybook Cruises , which is affiliated with Cruise Planners, said cruise ships keep a close eye on weather developments and will adjust their itinerary depending on the severity of the storm.

“Cruise lines monitor the weather all the time. They’re not going to put their passengers in harm’s way,” said Peterson, who has been a cruise adviser for more than 20 years and has sailed on nearly 60 cruises. “Obviously, some cruise lines are better at doing this than others.”

In 2016, Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas returned to port after cruising into a “bomb cyclone,” which damaged the ship amid winds gusting to 100 mph. The ship sailed into the remnants of Hurricane Hermine seven months later, causing additional problems.

To ensure the safety and comfort of its passengers, a cruise ship can alter its course and circumvent the rough weather system. In stormy conditions, the crew can deploy the stabilizers, which will prevent the ship from rolling and bucking.

“You don’t experience the up and down,” Peterson said. “It’s not as rough a ride.”

Both approaches can add to a cruise line’s expenditures, Peterson said. Stabilizers slow the vessel, thereby consuming more fuel. Sailing around the storm can take longer than the original route and disrupt the company’s cruise schedule, leading to delays or cancellations. The cruise line may have to reimburse passengers or provide them with future credits because of the inconvenience.

“When they do something like that, it’s going to cost them money,” Peterson said.

Craig Setzer , a meteorologist and hurricane preparedness specialist, said that even with the hurricane-like conditions and flooding, “I would never be in doubt of the vessel’s integrity,” he said. “Cruise ships are structurally very, very sound and can survive a lot. They’re really rugged.”

Matthew Cappucci contributed to this report.

Living at sea: Travelers on a 9-month world cruise are going viral on social media. For some travelers, not even nine months was enough time on a ship; they sold cars, moved out of their homes and prepared to set sail for three years . That plan fell apart, but a 3.5-year version is waiting in the wings.

Passengers beware: It’s not all buffets and dance contests. Crime data reported by cruise lines show that the number of sex crimes has increased compared to previous years. And though man-overboard cases are rare, they are usually deadly .

The more you know: If you’re cruise-curious, here are six tips from a newcomer. Remember that in most cases, extra fees and add-ons will increase the seemingly cheap price of a sailing. And if you happen to get sick , know what to expect on board.
