Start at the Railway Museum, with its full-scale models, or indulge Ninjago fans with a trip to the Samurai and Ninja Museum. There are some peaceful green spaces in Kyoto where you can picnic and play; don’t miss the Imperial Palace Park which has a large playground where kids can run wild. Seoul, South Korea

If you’re planning a cultural family getaway, South Korea ’s vibrant capital fits the bill. This concrete jungle is clean and safe, with an accessible public transport system and pay-per-hour play cafes everywhere. In the world of entrepreneurship, it’s crucial to have a strong support system. For Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) entrepreneurs who often face additional systemic challenges in the United States, family is a key pillar of this network. From generational wisdom to specific cultural values, family guidance can act as a compass to guide entrepreneurs through personal and professional challenges.

As Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month comes to a close, we spoke with five AAPI food and drink founders who are amplifying their cultural and culinary heritage through their work. Each of them has been profoundly influenced by the wisdom imparted by their families, which they say has contributed to their successes. Here’s what they had to say about the best advice they’ve ever received from their families—from being resilient to defining success on their own terms.

A sense of resilience and sacrifice

Many of the first- and second-generation Asian Americans we spoke to say they witnessed their parents and grandparents struggle to make it in America before them. According to Sahra Nguyen, founder of the pioneering Vietnamese coffee company Nguyen Coffee Supply , her parents’ story inspires her to keep going and persevere.

“I often think about my parents' own journeys to live through a war in their homeland, escape Vietnam on a boat, stay in a refugee camp, and then migrate to America to build a better life for their families,” Nguyen said. “I know our struggles are relative to our own experiences, and still I tap into their spirit of resilience, courage and vision to motivate my own journey. I like to think it's in our DNA!”

Some entrepreneurs were also inspired by seeing their parents run their own businesses and become successful in their own right. Maggie ‘Ranmu’ Xue, founder of premium Taiwanese tea brand Us Two Tea , says she learned the power of resilience from her mother.

“The best advice I've received from my mom—a successful businesswoman—is ‘做生意就是做人’, which means "building a business is building character,” says Xue. “It requires self-discipline and perseverance. It requires learning how to build relationships, do the hard things, and get back on your feet after failure and rejection.”

A commitment to honoring family and community

Beyond resilience, Asian cultures prioritize commitment to family. Children are traditionally taught to adhere to the Confucian principle of “filial piety,” which refers to respect for parents and teachers — but can be extended to compassion and collectivism overall.

“As someone of Asian descent, I think filial piety and my family is a big part of that,” says Sean Ro, co-founder of Lunar , the first Asian hard seltzer brand. “I'm a fairly simple man with simple needs, but I do deeply desire to give back to my parents for all that they've sacrificed for me, so family is a big motivation and driver.”

Alton But, founder of Asian sparkling beverage brand Moshi , echoes this sentiment, adding that his family taught him to put himself in other people’s shoes in order to build more meaningful relationships personally and professionally.

“Whether it’s a vendor, a potential customer, or even an employee: understanding the needs and values of the person on the other side of the conversation before making an important decision has greatly influenced my business,” But says. “I find that even something as simple as drafting emails can mean the difference of being ignored or getting a response.”

Most importantly, Nguyen says: “Treat your team with kindness, patience, and respect. My parents have always instilled the value of taking care of everyone around you, including employees. It takes teamwork to make the dream work.”

The importance of following your dreams — on your own terms

While stereotypes of Asian parents — such as the infamous “Tiger Mom” — have portrayed parents as strict and even unloving, the founders we spoke to say times are changing. Matthew Foung, co-founder of the recently launched electrolyte supplement brand ONLY Hydration , says his father encouraged him to think and make decisions for himself—even if it meant going outside of conventional fields like medicine or law.

“When I was in grade school, my dad remarked, ‘Do whatever you want, it is your life,’” Foung says. “At first, his words left me feeling lost and unsupported. But as time passed, I realized it was his way of showing guidance—he wanted me to make and own my decisions, whether it’s choosing to go to graduate school or pursuing entrepreneurship. My father influenced me to always approach difficult crossroads without regret. Each person must decide what they truly want in life.”

To this end, But says that the definition of success is changing for young AAPI entrepreneurs, adding that while his parents started an Asian noodle and wonton wrapper business that was eventually acquired, what mattered more was the sense of pride he felt when seeing their products in people’s homes.

“To me, my family is the living definition of the American dream! But I don’t think that being acquired is necessarily my only definition of success,” he says. “I recall seeing my family’s wonton noodles in friend’s refrigerators and being proud to tell their parents this was my family’s business. I think this is along the lines of what I see as success: seeing people choose Moshi means the world to me.”

Foung echoes this sentiment, noting: “Unlike most traditional Asian families, who value stability and 'safe' careers over dreams and hobbies, they never wanted me to be 'successful' in that conventional sense. For them, success means having good morals and strong character and knowing the value of hard work and perseverance.”

From Backstreet Boys to luxury cruise: Inside the second pre-wedding celebrations for Asia’s richest man’s son

Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan , Alia Bhatt, Salman Khan , and former Indian men’s cricket team captain MS Dhoni are among the 800 guests expected to attend the second lavish pre-wedding bash of the youngest son of Asia’s richest man Mukesh Ambani .

Twenty eight-year-old Anant Ambani’s wedding to childhood sweetheart Radhika Merchant is set to take place on 12 July, but the four-day luxury cruise, starting 29 May, is already setting expectations for extravagant wedding celebrations .

Ms Merchant, 29, is from a family with business interest in pharmaceuticals.

According to the invite, which has gone viral on social media, the theme for the cruise is La Vite E Un Viaggio – translating to Life is a Journey – and promises guests “an adventure of a lifetime”.

According to Indian media reports, the festivities kicked off with a welcome lunch for the guests who boarded a luxury cruise liner on 29 May, which set off for a 4,380kms voyage from Palermo to the South of France and then back, and was then followed by a Starry Night-themed evening gala.

On 30th May, guests were to be taken on a sightseeing tour of Rome, ending with a toga party at night.

On Friday, a party to celebrate the first birthday of Veda, Mukesh Ambani’s granddaughter by his oldest son Akash Ambani, will be held during the day. The evening will see a masquerade ball in Cannes.

The revelry will conclude on 1 June with a party titled La Dolce Vita in Portofino, meant to capture the spirit of an Italian summer.

Guests have been given a detailed itinerary complete with dress codes for each party, ranging from “classic cruise” wear to Greco-Roman inspired looks for the toga party. Merchant is expected to don a “Galactic Princess” dress created using aero aluminium, by New York-based designer Grace Ling.

The Ambanis have spared no expense, as a team of 600 staff has been commissioned to pamper guests while on the cruise.

Bollywood actors Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Karisma Kapoor, Karan Johar, Ananya Panday, Janhvi Kapoor, Sara Ali Khan, Ibrahim Ali Khan, Disha Patani and social media influencer Orry have all reportedly left for the cruise, according to paparazzi.

While not much information on the cruise is expected to be available, since a no-cell phones -policy is being strictly enforced, some information has trickled out.

A video doing the rounds on social media shows popular US boy band Backstreet Boys performing at the Starry Night themed party.

The wedding celebrations kicked off with the first pre-wedding celebration held in Mukesh Ambani’s hometown Jamnagar in March, where he reportedly spent $150m. The three-day festivities included a performance by US singer Rihanna, bejewelled elephants, and the who’s who of Bollywood performing for 1,200 guests, which included Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Ivanka Trump.

Mukesh Ambani is Asia’s richest man and a renowned oil and telecommunications tycoon, competing closely with billionaire Gautam Adani, chair of Adani Group of companies, according to the real-time billionaires list worldwide compiled by Forbes as of 30 January 2024.

The Ambani family, with an estimated net worth of $113bn (£89.53bn), according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index, runs India’s leading conglomerates in all sectors – petroleum refining and marketing, organised retail, telecommunication giant Jio and other digital streaming services.

TOKYO (AP) — A Japanese town that erected a huge black screen last week in an attempt to stop tourists from snapping photos of Mount Fuji and overcrowding the area has discovered holes in the screen and is working to repair them, officials said Tuesday.

Fujikawaguchiko, a popular spot to view and photograph the iconic mountain, put up the screen last Tuesday , but the next day officials discovered a hole in it. By Tuesday morning, officials had found around 10 similar holes, all at eye level, and all apparently just the right size to fit a camera lens through.

One especially popular viewing location is outside a Lawson convenience store, from where photos taken at a certain angle would make it look as if Mount Fuji was sitting atop the store roof.

Local residents have complained about visitors blocking the narrow sidewalk and walking into the busy road or onto neighboring properties to get their shots, officials said.

The town spent 1.3 million yen ($8,285) to install the 2.5-meter (8.2-feet) -high black mesh net that stretches 20 meters (66 feet), and additional fences along the sidewalk.

The screen has helped ease congestion in the area, officials said.

Over-tourism has also become a growing issue at other popular tourist destinations such as Kyoto and Kamakura.

In 2016, Justin Alexander Shetler embarked on an adventure in India’s Parvati Valley, nicknamed the “Valley of Death.”

Mr Shetler, a travel blogger and survivalist from Oregon , notified his followers about the ambitious expedition in early September of that year. “I should return mid September or so,” he wrote on his blog. “If I’m not back by then, don’t look for me.”

This was the last thing he ever posted. Now almost a decade after he vanished , his family remains without answers over what happened to him .

The traveler’s story is receiving renewed attention thanks to a new ten-part podcast, “Status: Untraced,” which tells the story of Mr Shetler’s life and his family’s attempts to find him.

Mr Shetler, who would now be 43, had survival training and would likely have been able to navigate the Parvati Valley wilderness — making his disappearance all the more perplexing, said podcast host Liam Luxon.

“Justin is a survival expert, so if somebody was living off the grid, it would be him. He has all the training for it,” Mr Luxon told Fox News .

The Parvati Valley is nicknamed “The Valley of Death” for a reason. Dozens of travelers had gone missing there since the 1990s, wrote journalist Harley Rustad in his 2022 book Lost in the Valley of Death: Obsession and Danger in the Himalayas .

Mr Luxon, however, isn’t convinced Mr Shetler disappeared because he couldn’t survive in the region.

“Other people had passed him on the trail,” he said. “They said he was heading down and there was only one path going up and down.

“I’ve made the trek now, and it certainly seemed like he would’ve made it back to the camp. And again, this guy is a survival expert. It wasn’t like he was deep in the desert with no water and nothing around him for days.

“He should have made this trek. Nothing added up.”

Before he disappeared, Mr Shetler had “given up everything,” Mr Luxon told Fox News.

“He didn’t have a job anymore,” the podcast host said. “He was trying to raise money for a school in Nepal that was helping to build after an earthquake. He was traveling around at his own expense.”

Mr Shetler’s mother described her son similarly in a Facebook post .

“He was a tender-hearted guy from the very beginning and always cared deeply about others, especially homeless, abused and victimized children,” she wrote on his birthday, a year after he went missing in 2017. “He sought to make the world a better place, and I want to honor his efforts.”

His mother listed charities that she hoped people would donate to in her son’s honor, including the Nepal Youth Foundation and the San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center.

Various theories have been suggested as to what happened to the adventurer including claims he was murdered, targeted by the local mafia, or was secretly living off the grid. However Mr Luxon said that he hopes his podcast leads to new evidence.

“I think one of the weirdest things about this entire thing has been grieving for somebody I’ve never met,” Mr Luxon told Fox News. “But I do feel like I know him now. I spent hundreds of hours talking to loved ones...Justin also changed my life.”
