Dundee Campus Coffee Tour
by Evie Fergusson Apr 7, 2017
Second year student Evie Fergusson rates the coffee on campus
*All views expressed are solely that of Evie and not of the University of Dundee*
For most students, myself included, coffee becomes an increasingly dependent factor in the daily productivity of life at the university. However, with so many readily available outlets for coffee on campus it is hard to tell where you will be getting the best caffeine for your buck. So, whether you are looking to grab something quick and instant before a lecture, or have the luxury of having time to relax in one of the Universities many cafes – this campus tour will hopefully be able to guide you in the right and possibly even surprising direction.
All prices are compared in terms of cappuccinos.
By no means a hidden spot for coffee, the library café is always bustling with students and for good reason.
As one of the most central locations on campus, it is an easily accessible caffeine pit stop for both staff and students. The café boasts a wide selection of sweet and savory snacks, is an outlet for the freshly baked goods of Clarks Bakery, and a cappuccino will only set you back £1.75. The drawbacks, however, include a constant array of stressed students and for those of an impatient nature, you are required to make the coffee yourself using a machine at the till.
Not the most luxurious, but a promising location none the less.
Next up is DUSA the union:
From the venue we all know and love, there are two places you should check out if you’re looking for a good coffee – Liar Bar and Pavement Cafe.
Liar bar is fully equipped with comfy sofas and large screens and is perfect for a casual meeting place with friends. Again serving hot, delicious food throughout the day, the atmosphere is usually chilled and a cappuccino will cost you a mere £1.40. As one of the cheapest locations on campus, it’s definitely worth checking out, particularly if you can secure yourself a much coveted window booth overlooking the beautiful Tay.
Finally on the checklist was the chaplaincy centre.
It’s a place I walk past every other day and hadn’t yet experienced. For those of you as naïve as myself, once inside (up the stairs to the left) there lies a quaint little café, with a one man counter serving a small selection of snacks. For a student on the go this isn’t the one for you, as there is no yoyo wallet, no takeaway and surprisingly no cappuccino. There is however your standard regular black coffee which will cost you £1.40 although simplistic, the café offers an interesting arial view over the chaplaincy hall and a (weather permitting) sunny roof terrace!
The Chaplaincy Coffee Shop may not do you a Cappuccino but their home made soup is surely the best on campus. It’s an absolute steal at the price as well 🙂
If you’ve got a friend with fob access at the Life Sciences Research complex it’s worth trying also the Street café at the Discovery Centre foyer and also the Garland café on the fourth floor of the Wellcome Trust Biocentre (amazing views that one)
