Disney has announced its Magic at Sea themed cruise experience will be returning late next year after its first ever cruises from Aotearoa , set to set sail later this year, have received an "incredible response".

The sailings aboard the Disney Wonder promise to include characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars milling about onboard as well as "Broadway-quality" live shows, Frozen adventures in Disney's Oceaneer Club, a multi-level replica of Andy's Room from Toy Story and a Marvel SuperHero Academy.

The newly announced two, three, four and five night cruises will depart Auckland at dates throughout December, 2024. They follow the previously announced sailings set to depart Auckland on five nights in November and December this year.

More from Newshub

"We were thrilled by the incredible response to our inaugural sailings in Australia and New Zealand and can't wait to return in October 2024," said Sharon Siskie, Disney Cruise Line's senior vice president and general manager..

"We look forward to bringing the magic of Disney to this beautiful part of the world as we welcome both returning guests and those who are new to our special brand of family cruising."

On the Disney Cruise website on Wednesday, the 2024 cruises start at NZ$1559 for a single adult on a two night sailing from Auckland.

New sailings from Australia have also been added from October, 2024 through to February, 2025 with other options including a seven night cruise.

The Disney Wonder also features themed dining spots on the ship include Tiana's Place, which offers New Orleans cuisine and Princess Tiana herself, along with Animator's Palate, which is described as an interactive Disney dining experience, as well as adults-only areas including a pool, spa and salon.

Bookings for the 2024 cruises open on June 27.

i’d jump on any of these in a heartbeat if not for the cost of airfare to that part of the world

' src=

Could be magical from auckland as ship would have to fly to follow above map, as cruise terminal on other side of island….disney magic

' src=

As I heard somebody else mention, these are obviously meant for Australia residents to take as I don’t know anybody from the US that would pay that kind of money to fly all the way down there and go on one of these cruises that only makes 1 or 2 port stops (even the 6 night only makes 2 port stops), these itineraries are terrible. Only ones worth looking at would be the repositioning cruises and they don’t make any stops in New Zealand or Australia (except when they actually get to or leave from Sydney). Think DCL could have done better with these. Glad I already had other DCL cruises booked for 2023.

' src=

but it is ok to fly to the US for only 2-7 night voyages?

You may easily find the decision was too late and other ports of call were taken.

' src=

I have been told that these cruises are like the UK cruises last year and all are cruises to nowhere. While there are ports listed, they are tactical ports for refueling, etc. and not ports of call for guests.

' src=

That is honestly super disappointing. No longer cruise around Australia or NZ, only super short trips. How the hell id doing a 2 night?

' src=

It didn’t take us long to realize these are not worth the airfare and pre-cruise over night and post cruise over night stays. I agree the reposition itineraries are a better choice, and even those prices are a little high. Just focusing on the repositions at this point.

Some of the links on this page are coded wrong, such as safari-reader://disneycruiselineblog.com/cruise-planning/itineraries//itineraries/itinerary-summary/?itinerary=673 The correct coding should be https://disneycruiselineblog.com/cruise-planning/itineraries//itineraries/itinerary-summary/?itinerary=673 🙂

' src=

Valerie, Thanks for letting me know, I’ve corrected the links.

' src=

What are the early booking dates? Have they said yet?

I keep trying to click on “View Early Booking Dates” and it is not active yet. I was told we would hear more on 9/26.

' src=

Hello Scott Any idea when other itineraries for 2024 will be available ? October I believe?

' src=

With the New Zealand dollar at 0.56 and the Australian dollar at 0.64 to the US dollar, I don’t think that the “locals” will be able to pay DCL the expensive cruise fares that Disney will demand! And Americans are not going to fly that far for a short cruise!?

' src=

Hi Ed, as an Australian I have booked and previously sailed DCL in the US. It’s cheaper for us to sail here (even in the Aus school holidays and around Xmas) than it is to fly over to the US and get on it. Disney fans will go if they understand the quality of these beautiful ships , it’s the first time or non cruises that will be complaining

' src=

I would not be surprised if these cruises are meant to gauge local interest in the Disney brand, so that Disney can determine if building a property in the region might be a good idea.

The same goes for the Singapore sailings in 2025 – in fact, in the 1990’s Disney had a plan to build a property in Singapore, but it got scrapped, probably because of the Disneyland Paris fiasco – the same fate that befell a lot of 1990’s Disney projects.

Arts & entertainment, design & style, travel & leisure, search concrete playground, disney is bringing its 'magic at sea' cruises down under for the first time from october 2023.

Fancy hitting the seas surrounded by Disney, Marvel, Pixar and 'Star Wars' fun? Disney's cruise line will soon set sail from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland.

Disney Is Bringing Its 'Magic at Sea' Cruises Down Under for the First Time From October 2023

"Darling it's better down where it's wetter," Disney's animated hit The Little Mermaid told us; however, the Mouse House also thinks that life is pretty great on top of the water. For nearly a quarter-century, the huge entertainment company has been taking fans of its ever-growing array of pop culture wares on themed vacations, all thanks to its Disney Cruise Line. Alas, setting sail from Australia and Aotearoa hasn't been a possibility — until now.

Come October 2023, Disney Cruise Line will head Down Under for the first time ever, running Disney-themed holiday cruises from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland. And yes, given that Disney own plenty of huge franchises, that means these stints at sea are Marvel , Pixar and Star Wars -themed as well.

disney magic cruise nz

The Mouse House's first 'Magic at Sea' Australian and NZ cruises will depart from October 28, 2023, with the season running through till February 2024. On offer: sailings for two, three, four, five and six nights — your pick — where you'll watch live musical shows, see Disney characters everywhere you look and eat in spaces decked out like Disney movies.

Those musicals include a Frozen show; another production dedicated to the company's old-school favourites like Peter Pan , Pinocchio , Cinderella and Aladdin ; and a Golden Mickeys performance, which is obviously all about Mickey Mouse. Or, there's a Mickey party set to DJ beats, nightly fireworks and a pirate shindig on the vessel's deck.

disney magic cruise nz

While not every show and party is available on all cruises — especially the two-night option — the entertainment also includes Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, Moana, Tiana, Cinderella, Woody, Jessie and more wandering around the ship. And, Chewbacca, Rey, Spider-Man , Captain Marvel and Thor as well, if you like hanging out around folks in costumes.

The dining setup rotates, so each day of the cruise takes you to a different location with a different theme. One day, you'll hit up the Animator's Palate, which focuses on bringing Disney characters to life — including getting patrons to draw their own characters — and on the next, you'll get munching in a restaurant inspired by The Princess and the Frog , and serving up New Orleans-inspired dishes.

Or, there's also Triton's, which offers an under the sea theme given it's named after Ariel 's father, and serves four-course French and American suppers.

disney magic cruise nz

For folks travelling with young Disney devotees, there's also a whole range of activities just for kids — but adults without littlies in tow are definitely catered for, complete with a dedicated pool for travellers aged 18 and over, an adults-only cafe, the Crown & Fin pub, cocktail bar Signals, Italian eatery Palo, and a day spa and salon.

Dates for Disney Cruise Line's first trips from Australia and New Zealand vary per city of departure, as do prices, but you can expect to enter this whole new ocean-faring world from $720 per person for two nights in a double-occupancy room from Sydney, $546 from Melbourne and $755 from Brisbane, and $760 per person for three nights in a double-occupancy room from Auckland.

And, room-wise, there's ten different types to choose from — some with private verandahs, and some with ocean views through portholes.

disney magic cruise nz

Disney Cruise Line's 'Magic at Sea' cruises will sail from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland between October 2023–February 2024, with bookings open from 8am AEST / 11am NZDT on Thursday, September 29, 2022. For more information, head to the cruise line's website .

Disney Cruise Line in a Jiffy: What is a Home Port?

In the world of cruising, a “home port” (also called a hub port or turnaround port) is essentially a base port, where a ship boards most of its passengers and supplies. A home port is where a ship begins and ends the bulk of its sailings. This is different from a ship’s port of registry, which is often a legal designation rather than a practical one.

Disney Cruise Line has two year-round home ports: Port Canaveral and Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale), both in Florida. Currently the Magic, Fantasy, Wish, and Treasure all use Port Canaveral as their home port for at least part of the year. The Magic and Dream use Port Everglades as a home port.

Disney uses Vancouver, Canada, as a home port for the Wonder in during the summer months. Lesser used home ports for the Wonder include Auckland, New Zealand; Brisbane, Australia; Melbourne, Australia; Sydney, Australia; Honolulu, Hawaii; and San Diego California.

disney magic cruise nz

European DCL home ports currently include Barcelona, Spain; Civitavecchia, Italy; and Southampton, England. And additional US home ports currently include Galveston, Texas and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The average DCL guest might not care about home port status beyond the convenience or inconvenience of a particular port to your location. For example, in the past DCL has home ported in New York City, less than an hour from my home, during the autumn. This was advantageous for me because I didn’t need to pay for a flight at the beginning and end of my sailing. Additionally, a cruise line’s services may be enhanced at a permanent home port location. For example, DCL’s Port Canaveral is more spacious and comfortable than some of their part-time home port facilities. But that only mildly impacts your comfort for an hour or so while waiting to board the ship.

“Disney Cruise Line in a Jiffy” is an offshoot of our “ Disney in a Minute ” series. Both are bite-sized nuggets of information that can better help you understand a Disney term or planning topic. Have a question about a DCL term that is unfamiliar to you? Suggest it here for an upcoming segment.

"Encanto" Topiary at EPCOT

21 Disney Topiaries Taking Art Form to the Next Level

Thomas Smith

by Thomas Smith , Editorial Content Director, Disney Experiences

Throughout this year’s EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival , we’ve shared several “how’d they do that?” stories about our Disney topiaries but nothing like today’s update. We’re taking a special look back at this unique art form (and Disney tradition) with some vintage photos from the past and 21 top photos of 2024’s most detailed and elaborate topiaries that’ll make you say, “Ooh.”

Topiaries at "it's a small world" at Disneyland Park

Walt Disney originally got the idea of creating “living” topiaries when seeing traditional topiary gardening in Europe. Walt eventually then asked animators and Disneyland landscape teams to do their magic – as seen in a rare Disneyland Resort photo from our archives.

In 1963, there were 24 original Disneyland park topiaries, including a waltzing hippo, a poodle, a pig, bears, elephants, seals, and giraffes. In 1966, they were permanently planted at “it’s a small world.”

Beauty and the Beast Topiary at EPCOT

Over the years, topiaries like Belle and the Beast in France have become even more jaw-dropping. Horticulture teams often work with Walt Disney Animation Studio artists and Imagineers to leverage different types of topiary designs and techniques to create eye-catching characters and scenes out of plants and plant material.

Princess Tiana Topiary at EPCOT

As we’ve shared, the Princess Tiana topiary at The American Adventure at EPCOT is an extra special creation that stays true to the New Orleans spirit and scenery – even using magnolias and florals native to the area. Imagineer Brittany Smith and cast member Antoinette Valentin studied every detail of Disney Animation’s “The Princess and the Frog” to help turn a hand-drawn animation into a 3D figure.

Elsa Topiary at EPCOT

It’s the beginning of the topiary project where sketches and 3-D models play a crucial role in guiding the planning process before it’s passed off to welders who create the frame that’ll eventually become a character like Anna or Elsa found in Norway.

Lady and the Tramp Topiary at EPCOT

Many of the Disney topiaries that’ll stop you in your tracks are created with a design called Sphagnum Topiary, which uses a frame to shape the figure. The Lady and the Tramp topiaries at the Italy Pavilion are perfect examples – created with sphagnum moss and other plants.

Simba and Friends Topiaries at EPCOT

Like the stunning Simba and friends topiaries near The Land Pavilion, the process of creating a “living” masterpiece has been sped up by using sphagnum moss (a high-quality material from New Zealand) as a base to hold different species of plants to match Disney character clothing, hair and of course, fur texture!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs topiaries at EPCOT

There are more than 70 topiaries at the Flower & Garden Festival. And many of these masterpieces can take months to reach full bloom and be “show” ready, like the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs topiaries in Germany.

Groot Topiary at EPCOT

Every year, Disney teams are looking to add new magic to the topiaires and 2024 is no exception.  For the first time, Groot, the  Flora Colossi  from the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, took root near Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind in World Discovery.

The design draws inspiration from the entertaining “I Am Groot” short featured on Disney+, titled Groot Takes a Bath, where the lovable character gets inventive with his topiary powers.

"Wish" Topiaries at EPCOT

And at the entrance of EPCOT, you find new topiaries featuring Asha, Valentino, and Star from the Disney Animation film “Wish.”

To authentically represent these characters, the team hand-wove Asha’s braids and incorporated lighting effects for Star’s celestial dust.

Cogsworth Topiary at EPCOT

With Lumiere and Cogsworth topiaries in France, here are the rest of this year’s best photos of Disney topiaries and where you can find them.

Bambi and friends topiaries at EPCOT

Bambi and friends topiaries are at World Showcase near Refreshment Port and favorites Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Chip ‘n’ Dale and Pluto can be spotted at the bridge to World Showcase at EPCOT.

Woody, Bo Peep and Her Sheep Topiaries at EPCOT

Woody and Bo Peep with her Sheep are can’t-miss topiaries at World Nature, between Imagination! and The Land Pavilion. A fantastic Captain Hook, with Peter Pan and Tick Tock Croc are at World Showcase between United Kingdom and Canada and the intricate Pumbaa and Timon topiaries are near The Land Pavilion.

Figment Topiary at EPCOT

The bright and colorful Figment topiary and flower towers greet guests in the World Celebration gardens area. An impressive Dragon is planted at the Japan Pavilion near Torii Gate and of course, the fascinating troll topiary can be found in Norway.

Vintage Topiaries at Disney

We hope you enjoyed this unique look back at Disney topiaries – old and new!

There’s still time to see the 2024 topiaries featured in today’s story at the Flower & Garden Festival and here’s a list of where you can find all of the stunning topiaries . The festival runs through May 27.
