Before we dive into the specifics of the Disney Cruise Line food options, it’s essential to clarify what’s included in your fare. Here’s a rundown:

  • Main Dining Rooms : Meals at the main dining restaurants (such as Animator’s Palate, Enchanted Garden, and Royal Court) are included.
  • Quick-Service Dining : Food from quick-service (casual) spots like Flo’s V8 Cafe, Duck-In Diner, and Eye Scream is included.
  • Buffet Dining : Meals at buffet-style dining venues like Cabanas are included.
  • Character Breakfasts : These breakfasts are free, but tickets must be obtained in advance.
  • Room Service : Most items on the room service menu are complimentary, but note that gratuity is not included.
  • Snacks : Free snacks are available throughout the day at various locations on the ship.

Unlimited sodas and juices are included in your cruise cost, no drink package necessary!

Not Included:

  • Specialty Dining : Meals at adult-exclusive dining venues like Palo, Remy, and Enchanté come at an additional cost. The same goes for Royal Court’s Royal Tea.
  • Alcoholic Beverages and Specialty Drinks : Soft drinks are free at the beverage station, but alcoholic beverages, smoothies, and specialty coffees are not.
  • Snacks at Preludes : Snacks and beverages at Preludes, located near the ship’s theaters, are not included.

Your Disney Cruise fare includes a wide selection of delicious meals that cater to all tastes. However, you have the choice to enhance your dining experience with premium options available for an extra charge. It’s entirely up to you whether to stick with the inclusive options or add charges to your stateroom account.

Keep in mind, though, that gratuities are not included in the cost of a Disney cruise, and this applies to both the included and extra-cost meals.

Types of Dining Experiences on Disney Cruise Line

A Disney cruise offers a variety of dining options to suit every taste, from gourmet foodies to fussy eaters. Here are the main types of dining experiences you’ll encounter on a Disney cruise.

Rotational Dining on Disney Cruises

Disney Cruise Line’s Rotational Dining introduces a novel approach to dining, blending variety with familiarity. My wife and I are big fans of this system, as it brings a delightful element of surprise to our meals.

In the Rotational Dining system, you’ll visit three main dining restaurants during your cruise, changing the venue each night . This rotation lets you appreciate the unique ambiance, theme, and menu of each restaurant, ensuring that you experience them all.

You don’t need to make a reservation for the nightly dinner service — you simply pick a dining time when you book your cruise. You’ll select either early/main dining (usually around 5:45 PM), or late/second dining (typically around 8:00 PM). As you board the ship, you’ll receive a dining rotation that shows which restaurant you’re assigned to for each night of the cruise.

One of the standout features of this system is the consistent service. Your serving team travels with you from restaurant to restaurant, quickly becoming familiar with your personal preferences, dietary requirements, and even your favorite dessert, leading to a truly personalized dining experience.

Here’s a glimpse into the dining rotation on each ship:

  • On Disney Magic , the rotation includes Lumiere’s, Animator’s Palate, and Rapunzel’s Royal Table.
  • The Disney Wonder features Triton’s, Animator’s Palate, and Tiana’s Place.
  • On Disney Dream , you’ll experience Royal Palace, Animator’s Palate, and Enchanted Garden.
  • Disney Fantasy also includes Royal Court and Animator’s Palate but with the Enchanted Garden as the third venue.
  • And finally, Disney Wish introduces Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure, Worlds of Marvel, and 1923.

Every meal becomes a highlight of the day, bringing the excitement of a new setting combined with the comfort of familiar faces in our serving team. For my wife and I, the variety offered by Rotational Dining transforms each meal into its own unique adventure.

Buffet Dining

Disney Cruise Line’s buffet dining options, like Cabanas on four Disney ships and the new Marceline Market on Disney Wish, offer a casual, diverse culinary experience. Both buffet venues feature an extensive selection of dishes for breakfast and lunch in a free-flowing dining environment, allowing guests to enjoy a variety of dishes at their leisure.

At Cabanas , guests can start their day with a classic American breakfast featuring made-to-order omelets, scrambled eggs, sausages, and Mickey-shaped waffles. Lunch transitions into contemporary favorites like salads, soups, burgers, sandwiches, steak, chicken, seafood, and pizza. Vegetarian options and a kid-friendly menu are also available.

Cabanas’ décor is designed to evoke the relaxed ambiance of a beach boardwalk, complete with sweeping sea views through floor-to-ceiling windows and on an outdoor patio. The nautical-themed setting is enhanced with a stunning 30-foot-long mosaic depicting a scene from Pixar’s Finding Nemo.

Disney Wish enhances the buffet experience with Marceline Market , a unique venue housing a series of themed food stations. Inspired by international marketplaces, the restaurant offers a wide range of international dishes, including Italian staples, Asian specialties, comfort food, and seafood specialties.

Dining at the buffet is included in your Disney cruise fare and offers flexibility to suit every schedule. However, because operating hours and offerings vary from day to day, please check the daily schedule.

Specialty Dining

Disney Cruise Line’s specialty dining options are perfect for guests seeking an upscale, intimate culinary experience. These adult-exclusive venues – Palo, Remy, and Enchanté – do require an extra fee and reservations, but they provide an unforgettable culinary experience.

  • Palo , available across all ships, offers Northern Italian cuisine in a sophisticated setting. The menu features a wide range of antipasti, handcrafted pasta, seafood, and delectable desserts, paired with a comprehensive wine list. Palo is my personal favorite, consistently impressing me with its atmosphere and cuisine. On the Disney Wish, Palo is enhanced as Palo Steakhouse , offering not only Italian favorites but also prime beef choices such as Australian wagyu and Japanese Kobe/Miyazaki.
  • Remy – found on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy – delivers a superb French menu inspired by Disney and Pixar’s Ratatouille. My wife, Jaimie, is a huge fan of Remy — the impeccable service, the menu bursting with flavors, and the overall culinary experience are exceptional.
  • On the Disney Wish, Enchanté takes luxury dining up a notch. The adults-only spot serves incredible food in a stunning setting with a menu designed by a three-Michelin-starred chef.

Palo Steakhouse – Disney Wish

The specialty dining venues on Disney cruises offer a peaceful, adult-only escape amidst the bustling cruise activities. They provide an opportunity for a relaxed, romantic meal. Exceptional service, thoughtful theming, and gourmet cuisine set these dining experiences apart on any Disney cruise. Speaking from personal experience, my wife and I believe these extraordinary moments justify the additional expense and the need to dress up just a bit.

These conveniently located dining spots are scattered across the pool deck and other areas of the ship, serving a range of food and beverages throughout the day.

The options range from classic comfort food like burgers, hot dogs, and pizza to healthier choices like fresh salads, wraps, and sandwiches. Whether you’re lounging by the pool, catching a movie under the stars, or simply looking for a snack to tide you over until dinner, quick-service dining offers a convenient and informal option that won’t interrupt your day’s activities.

For instance, on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, you can grab a quick bite at Flo’s Café , a Cars-themed quick service location offering American classics. On the Disney Magic, you’ll find the Duck-In Diner serving up delicious meals poolside. Pinocchio’s Pizzeria, a beloved feature on Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, delivers hot, fresh pizza throughout the day. On the Disney Wish, the Mickey and Friends Festival of Foods offers a selection of quick bites.

Quick-service dining is included in your Disney cruise fare, ensuring a wide selection of options for everyone in your party at no additional cost.

Character Dining Experiences

One of the unique aspects of a Disney cruise is the opportunity to dine with beloved Disney characters . These special dining events provide magical moments for kids and kids-at-heart alike.

Some of the main dining rooms offer some character interaction during dinner. For example, Louie makes appearances at Tiana’s Place on the Disney Wonder, and the Frozen dining experience on Disney Wish features all the primary characters from the films.

Arendelle Dining

Arendelle – a Frozen Dining Adventure, onboard the Disney Wish

Character breakfasts may be offered on cruises of seven nights or longer and offer the chance to pose for photos and get autographs from characters dressed in the cruise attire . It’s the perfect way to kick off your cruise day and one of the many reasons why Disney Cruise Line enjoys a reputation as the best cruise line for kids .

Additionally, the Royal Court Royal Tea Party (available for an additional fee on all ships except the Disney Wish) is a grand affair where young guests are treated like royalty . Accompanied by select Disney Princesses, guests enjoy tea, sandwiches, and pastries, along with storytelling and song performances.

The Vacationeer can provide more information about these special dining experiences.

Themed Dining Events

Disney Cruise Line takes themed dining to a whole new level with their unique dining events. These include Pirate Night , a swashbuckling celebration featuring a special menu and a grand deck party, and Frozen-themed dining on select sailings, where guests can savor Nordic-inspired dishes while interacting with beloved characters from the film.

On Marvel Day at Sea and Pixar Day at Sea sailings, guests can enjoy special themed menus inspired by their favorite movies. These dining events, complete with character appearances and entertainment, add another layer of magic to the Disney cruise experience.

In addition to meals, Disney Cruise Line offers a variety of snacks throughout the day. You can satisfy any mid-day or late-night craving with a variety of sweets and savory options.

One popular spot for a sweet treat is Eye Scream Treats , a self-service frozen dessert station where you can enjoy a (free!) swirled cone of soft-serve ice cream in various flavors. For those desiring a pastry or a caffeine kick, the adults-only Cove Café provides specialty coffees and assorted pastries.

Guests aboard Disney Dream can visit Vanellope’s Sweets & Treats , offering a delightful mix of candies, gelato, and baked goods inspired by the Wreck-It Ralph movies. On the Disney Fantasy, Sweet on You caters to guests’ sweet tooth with its handcrafted gelato, ice cream, chocolates, and an extensive selection of candies.

These snack locations are perfect for moments when a small treat is just what’s needed to satiate a sweet tooth or tide you over until the next meal. It’s important to note that while many snack options are included in your cruise fare, some items, particularly those from Vanellope’s Sweets & Treats and Sweet on You, carry an additional charge.

Room Service

Disney Cruise Line offers 24-hour complimentary room service , allowing guests to enjoy a meal or snack in the comfort of their stateroom. The room service menu features a variety of options, including sandwiches, salads, burgers, desserts, and a selection of beverages. Be sure to try the  All Hands On Deck cheese/cracker/fruit plate — it’s a repeat cruiser favorite!

You will need to pay a bit extra if you want canned sodas, specialty drinks, or prepackaged candies.

Whether you’re craving a midnight snack or prefer breakfast in bed, Disney’s room service has you covered. However, note that while the food is complimentary, gratuities for the delivery personnel are customary and not included in your cruise fare.

Lounges and Bars

Disney Cruise Line boasts a diverse range of bars and lounges catering to various moods and occasions. From refined champagne bars to dynamic sports pubs and relaxing pool bars, there’s an ideal spot for everyone.

Certain venues like Crown and Fin and O’Gills not only offer an extensive beverage selection but also provide light snacks or small-plate food options, enhancing your night out.

For those favoring an alfresco experience, pool deck bars such as Currents and Waves are perfect for a cocktail or cold beer paired with a selection of snacks.

Each Disney ship hosts a unique nightlife district, offering themed bars and lounges. For example, the Europa district on Disney Fantasy, with its European-inspired venues, offers a variety of specialty drinks and bite-sized foods.

Disney Cruise Line’s bars and lounges extend beyond relaxation and socialization; they deliver a culinary adventure with finely crafted drinks and delightful snacks amidst a magical Disney setting. Note that while many drink options are included in your cruise fare, some specialty beverages and foods may incur additional charges.

Food at Disney Cruise Line Destinations: A Tasting Tour

Disney Cruise Food - Scallops seared and served with orzo and vegetables

Disney Cruise Line’s itineraries do more than just transport guests to some of the world’s most captivating and scenic destinations; they also offer a passport to discover unique flavors and culinary traditions from across the globe. As a result of the diverse food options available at these destinations, dining becomes an adventure, allowing guests to experience local culture through their food.

Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island in the Bahamas, is a tropical paradise with great food as well. Included in your cruise fare are meals at two island dining venues, Cookie’s BBQ and Cookie’s Too BBQ , which serve a mouthwatering spread of BBQ ribs, burgers, grilled chicken, hot dogs, fresh salads, and soft-serve ice cream.

Disney Cruise Food - Cookie's BBQ entrance, showing plates stacked high and customers entering

Adults searching for a serene and relaxed dining environment can head over to Serenity Bay BBQ . This adults-only location provides the same tantalizing menu in a tranquil setting. It’s a location my wife, Jaimie, and I particularly enjoy.

Should you wish to indulge a bit more, various island bars serve a selection of tropical cocktails and beer for an additional fee.

Whether you’re savoring your meal with your toes in the sand or enjoying a fruity drink at the adults-only Serenity Bay, Castaway Cay offers a delicious taste of the tropics. See our Castaway Cay Tips page for more information.

Caribbean itineraries offer a chance to taste a medley of cuisines influenced by African, European, and Amerindian traditions. Local food vendors at various ports of call might serve up dishes like jerk chicken in Jamaica, roti in Barbados, or conch fritters in the Bahamas. If your itinerary includes a stop in Mexico, take advantage of the chance to savor authentic tacos or enchiladas.

Mediterranean

Disney’s European cruises introduce guests to a wide range of culinary traditions, especially in the Mediterranean. In Italy, you might enjoy a classic pasta dish or a slice of authentic Neapolitan pizza. In Greece, sample the traditional moussaka or a gyro filled with succulent meat and fresh tzatziki. If your cruise stops in Spain, don’t miss the chance to try paella or tapas.

Other Food Experiences on Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line also offers Port Adventures in many locations that include food tastings or cooking demonstrations, allowing guests the opportunity to learn more about the local cuisine and culture.

While dining onboard Disney Cruise Line is an experience to remember, the culinary adventures continue at each unique port of call. From local restaurants and food stalls to Disney’s very own Castaway Cay and forthcoming Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , there’s a world of flavors waiting to be discovered on your Disney Cruise Line journey.

Each dining venue on the ship features diverse menu options, many of which are suitable for vegetarians, vegans, and those with food allergies or intolerances. Guests with special dietary needs can expect to find a variety of tasty dishes, from fresh salads and grilled vegetables to unique plant-based entrees.

Disney Cruise Food - Mushroom Tart

Disney Cruise Line menus accommodate a range of dietary requirements, including gluten-free, lactose-free, Kosher, Halal, and more. However, to ensure a seamless dining experience, guests are encouraged to communicate any food allergies or special dietary needs at the time of booking. This information is then shared with the onboard team to prepare and handle your meals with utmost care.

A Disney Travel Agent from The Vacationeer can be a helpful resource in managing this process. They can assist in notifying Disney Cruise Line of any dietary needs ahead of your sailing, ensuring your dining experience is worry-free and enjoyable. Disney Cruise Menus

by Prof. Cruise · Published January 30, 2022 · Updated June 12, 2023

A bunch of Disney cruise menus with text that reads: Disney Cruise Menus.

There’s something you should know about me that might surprise you. I went on a Disney cruise before it was cool. In fact, I went on a Disney cruise before Disney Cruise Line even existed! You’re probably asking yourself two questions at this point: “how?” and “just how old is she?!?”

At 10 years-old I went on my very first cruise, a “Disney cruise” onboard Premier Cruise Line (they had a partnership with Disney that allowed characters on their ships and offered cruise, hotel, and theme park packages). I was reminiscing about that first cruise today with Paul Thornton as he interviewed me for the third in his series of cruise books and thought to myself, “even though I’m cheaper than Jack Benny (that should offer you a clue as to my age) and low-key hate Disney (Walt would want you to go easy on me in the comments), as someone who cruises for a living I really shouldn’t have let 30+ years go by between Disney cruises.”

disney cruise line blog menus

So that got me thinking about planning a Disney cruise. And since food is one of the most important aspects of cruising, I was curious as to whether the quality and variety of food on Disney would justify the extra cost. I figured some of my readers may be wondering the same, so I reached out to a Disney loving cruise buddy and he sent along these recent menus (these specific menus are from the Dream and the Fantasy – other ships will vary slightly, but this will still give you a basic idea of what to expect).

He also sent me a primer on “rotational dining,” which I think sounds pretty unique and fun.

What’s “rotational dining” on Disney cruises?

It’s like speed dating with food! Disney ships have three main dining rooms with a different menu and theme. Each evening of your cruise you will rotate to a different restaurant (assigned to you in advance) with your same table-mates and wait staff. In looking over the menus posted below, the three dining rooms are: Animator’s Palate, Enchanted Garden, and Royal Palace. There’s also a pirate theme night that will take place in one of those dining rooms and I’ve included that menu as well.

I’ll spare you any further song and dance (you’ll get plenty of that if you decide to book a Disney cruise) and get straight to the menus. But if there’s anyone reading who has cruised on Disney, please chime in in the comments with your experience and your favorite menu items.

Disney Cruise Line’s Breakfast Menu (included)

This breakfast menu will be available in one of the main dining rooms and is included in your cruise fare.

Disney Cruise Line’s Animator’s Palate Diner Menu Menu (included)

Aminator’s Palate is one of the three main dining rooms you will “rotate” through for dinner. If you are on a Disney ship other than the Dream or the Fantasy the dining rooms will have different names.

Disney Cruise Line's Animator's Palate Diner Menu Menu 2022 page 1

Disney Cruise Line’s Enchanted Garden Dinner Menu (included)

Enchanted Garden is one of the three main dining rooms you will “rotate” through for dinner. If you are on a Disney ship other than the Dream or the Fantasy the dining rooms will have different names.

Disney Cruise Line’s Royal Palace Dinner Menu (included)

Royal Palace (called “Royal Court” on the Fantasy) is one of the three main dining rooms you will “rotate” through for dinner. If you are on a Disney ship other than the Dream or the Fantasy the dining rooms will have different names.

Disney Cruise Line's Royal Palace Dinner Menu 2022 page 1

Disney Cruise Line’s Pirate Night Dinner Menu (included)

On most Disney itineraries there will be a Pirate-themed night that will take place in whatever restaurant you’re assigned for that night. Here’s the menu:

Disney Cruise Line’s Kids Menus

Here are the kid’s menus for a 7-night sailing. Each menu will also include an additional page with activities for kids to complete while waiting for their meal to arrive. Or for adults who forgot to charge their phone.

Disney Cruise Line's Kids Menu 2022 page 1

This is the kid’s menu for Pirate Night:

Disney Cruise Line’s Room Service Menu (included)

Room service is included for free on Disney cruises (except for specialty items noted below), but be sure to tip. I typically tip $2 per item ordered, but do whatever you’re comfortable with.

Disney Cruise Line’s Room Service Breakfast Card (included)

Hang this room service card on your stateroom door the night before and have a continental breakfast delivered the next morning at your chosen time.

Disney Cruise Line’s Flo’s Cafe Menu (included)

This complimentary outdoor cafe offers three food stations with the following options:

Disney Cruise Line’s Palo Dinner Menu (extra charge)

This adults-only Italian specialty restaurant offers a prix fixe option for $45 or you can order à la carte.

Disney Cruise Line's Palo Dinner Menu 2022 page 1

Disney Cruise Line Remy Dinner Menu (extra charge)

At $125 for the prix fixe option (you can also order à la carte), Remy stands out as the most expensive specialty restaurant at sea. The French-inspired offerings are the work of two world renowned chefs, Scott Hunnel, from the award-winning Victoria & Albert’s at the Disney World Resort, and Arnaud Lallement, a Michelin 3-starred chef recently named one of the world’s 10 best chefs by  Le Chef .

Disney Cruise Line Remy Dinner Menu 2022 page 1

These menus almost make me want to get a real job so I can afford them! That seems extreme though. Instead I think I’ll start subtly working on my in-laws, tugging gently on their heart strings: “Your grandson will love you more if you take us all on a Disney cruise!”

If my next post includes a photo of me pouting in 30-year-old Minnie ears with a “DONATE HERE TO SEND PROF. CRUISE ON A DISNEY CRUISE” button, you’ll know it didn’t work. And with that…

CLASS DISMISSED.

Homework (10 points): Share your thoughts on cruising Disney in the comments. If you’ve taken a Disney cruise, what did you think? If you haven’t, why not? Tips? Tricks? Highlights? Worth the higher cost? Not worth the higher cost? Favorite menu items? I want to hear it all! I love learning from my cruise friends, especially when they know way more about a topic than I do! Thanks in advance!

These are not required, but they’re a fun add-on for people looking to have a romantic dinner or an elevated dining experience during their cruise. One of the most popular restaurants is Palo , an adult-exclusive, Italian restaurant. Not only can you book dining at Palo on your Disney cruise, but there’s a newer offering you don’t want to miss!

Did you know that there’s an exclusive dining opportunity at Palo called Prima Notte ? This is a newer experience that allows guests to enjoy an Italian-themed tasting session with high-quality wines and bite-sized pairings .

While Disney calls this offering “all-new” we have seen that it’s been an option since 2023, but it certainly is on the newer side of things!

However, there are only two sessions available on the first night of your cruise , so be sure to book it as soon as your booking window opens! Otherwise, you can book regular Palo dining on all nights of your cruise.

Disney Cruise Line Ship Immediately Halts in Middle of Atlantic, Boat Capsizes

in Disney Cruise Line

Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse dressed in colorful captain's outfits from the Disney Cruise Line, waving with one hand and smiling, with a blurred bright background.

The Disney Dream took a pit stop in the middle of the Atlantic yesterday evening as the ship attempted to assist in what appeared to be an urgent emergency.

Disney Dream ship, adorned with elegant golden designs, sails on the open ocean under a clear sky, showcasing its vast scale and modern structure.

Disney Cruise Line sets sail on a fleet of five marvelous ships. The Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, launched in 1997 and 1998, respectively, are considered the veteran vessels of the Disney Cruise Line family. Known for their cozy size and enchanting Disney atmosphere, these ships are perfect for families looking for a classic Disney cruise experience.

Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, sister ships launched in 2010 and 2012, offer a bit more space compared to the classic ships.

The newest member of the fleet is the Disney Wish, which set sail for the first time in 2022. As the first in the Triton Class, the Disney Wish introduces innovative experiences like the immersive storytelling environment in the Disney Wish-verse.

Mickey and Minnie on the Disney Cruise Line ships

The future promises to be even brighter for Disney Cruise Line, with three more ships scheduled to join the fleet. The Disney Treasure, set for a late 2024 debut, will be the second ship in the Triton Class. Disney Adventure and Disney Destiny are also on the horizon, with launches planned for 2025.

No matter what Disney ship you are on, cast members ensure that guest safety is their top priority.

For example, just days ago, the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a pregnant passenger in need of assistance aboard the Disney Fantasy, conducting an airlift operation to transport her from the ship in the middle of the Atlantic to Puerto Rico, approximately 200 miles away.

The 35-year-old woman faced health issues requiring more extensive medical attention than what was available onboard.

Fireworks show at the Disney Cruise Line at Barcelona, Spain

Utilizing a rescue basket and litter, the woman and the ship’s doctor were lifted onto the helicopter, which then flew them to the Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Subsequently, she was transferred to Centro Medico Hospital for further treatment.

Disney will also stop to help other ships in the water if they appear to be in distress.

Last night, Kevin John O’Connor, a passenger on the Disney Dream, posted a reel to the Disney Cruise Line Facebook group, stating that the ship stopped moving to help what appeared to be a capsized boat in the water.

The boat was crossing the Atlantic to get to Spain when it stopped, and as we can see from Kevin’s post, it is certainly an upside down boat.

Kevin reported that there were no visible signs of life from the incident.

Two side-by-side images showing close-ups of an object from the Disney Cruise Line floating on the Atlantic at night, illuminated dimly, making it unclear what the object is.

The Blast reported that guest Jose Carreon on the Disney Dream had passed a capsized boat late evening on Tuesday, May 7, 2024. “Shortly thereafter, an announcement came over the loudspeakers, informing the passengers that the ship had to turn around and investigate. The ship stopped for approximately 30 minutes but then left the site. According to Mr. Carreon, the captain of the Disney Dream contacted local authorities.”

The publication spoke to other passengers including Lacey Harris, who said, “they saw lights and a capsized catamaran off the starboard side and would be stopping to investigate.” Ms. Harris witnessed the captain and crew “shine the big searchlight on the wreckage for about 30 minutes.”

“They searched the water and wreckage, but no one was found. After they realized no one would be found, the Captain came back [over the loudspeaker] and announced they would be continuing on to Ponta Delgada and thanked us for our patience.”

Earlier this year, we reported that Disney conducted a successful rescue mission on New Year’s Eve, once again stopping their boat to provide aid.

The crew spotted a small boat in distress north of Havana, Cuba. Cruise lines helping stranded vessels is uncommon, but Disney Fantasy didn’t hesitate. Passengers even captured the rescue mission on camera. The Disney Fantasy crew launched a smaller boat and brought four people on board safely.

While Disney has faced its fair share of issues, other major cruise lines do as well.

Carnival Cruise Line faced a significant emergency situation in February 2013 when the Carnival Triumph suffered an engine room fire. This incident left the ship stranded in the Gulf of Mexico without power, resulting in unsanitary conditions and limited amenities for passengers. After several days adrift, the ship was eventually towed to Mobile, Alabama.

Royal Caribbean encountered its own emergency situation in February 2016 when the Anthem of the Seas encountered a severe storm off the coast of South Carolina. The ship listed dramatically, causing damage and injuries among passengers due to the rough seas. As a result, the ship returned to port in New Jersey ahead of schedule.

Princess Cruise Line found itself in the midst of a crisis in February 2020 when the Diamond Princess faced a COVID-19 outbreak while docked in Yokohama, Japan. Passengers were quarantined onboard for several weeks, and the ship became a focal point of international attention regarding the spread of the virus.

These are just a few small examples of that.

More on Disney’s Next Cruise Line Adventure

A new era of spooky fun is setting sail on the Disney Cruise Line! The Disney Treasure, embarking on its maiden voyage to the Eastern Caribbean on December 21st, 2024, will be bringing the beloved Haunted Mansion experience to life onboard for the first time ever.

The aptly named Haunted Mansion Parlor will welcome guests with a chilling ambiance inspired by the iconic Disney Parks attraction. Expect specialty spooky libations and eerie décor that will send shivers down your spine in the best way possible.

The new sea captain for the Haunted Mansion bar

This spooky addition coincides perfectly with Disney’s annual “Halfway to Halloween” celebration, where they reveal exciting details about their upcoming Halloween festivities. To celebrate, Disney Cruise Line has unveiled some never-before-seen glimpses of the Haunted Mansion Parlor:

  • A hauntingly beautiful aquarium filled with ghostly fish – a tribute to an early concept from legendary Disney Imagineer Rolly Crump. A special bust will also be on display to honor his contributions.
  • An eerie art collection featuring some ghostly new residents, sure to send shivers down your spine.
  • Spooky drinkware designed to match the spectral inhabitants that haunt this lounge. Get ready for a treasure trove of entertainment options beyond the spooky delights!

A brand-new Haunted Mansion bar on the Disney Treasure Cruise Ship.

The Disney Treasure boasts a brand new Broadway-caliber musical, Disney: The Tale of Moana, that will set sail alongside you. Foodies can also rejoice with a Coco -themed dining experience at Plaza de Coco. This dinner show picks up where the beloved 2017 Pixar movie left off, with a brand-new adventure and delicious Mexican cuisine to tantalize your taste buds.

Thrill-seekers won’t be disappointed, either. The massive 144,000-gross ton cruise ship features the brand new AquaMouse water coaster, a 760-foot long adventure that combines the thrills of a water slide with a roller coaster.

Finally, for adults seeking a break from the little ones or couples looking for a romantic escape, Disney is expanding its adult-only offerings with Sarabi, a Lion King -themed lounge named after Simba’s mother. This versatile space transforms throughout the day, offering musical performances, comedy acts, and family game shows during the day before transforming into a lively adult-exclusive haunt by night, complete with live entertainment designed for a more mature audience.

Amazing Things That Surprised Me About Disney Cruise Line

by Rebekah Sedwick · May 13, 2024

Disney Dream

I have been an annual Walt Disney World visitor for years. I always go with a game plan for rides, food, and characters. In my family and friends’ group, I’m the resident expert.

This doesn’t apply to Disney cruises. Until this spring, I had never been on a single cruise in my life. And all Disney trips ( cruise or land) require extra insider knowledge.

Disney Cruise deposit

Photo: Disney

Luckily, I didn’t need to worry. With the help of an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner , I booked my first four-night Bahamian sailing on the Disney Dream.

(I can’t recommend these free travel agents enough. Not only did they have all the inside scoop, but they also helped me pick a cabin location for seasick-prone guests. Don’t pass on their free guidance.)

Check out my revelations post-Disney cruise! I hope it helps set your own magical expectations.

These servers will learn your drink orders, dietary preferences, and any other quirks. We bonded with our servers immediately. It felt like having dinner with friends every night.

By the end of the cruise, I was sad to say goodbye! Disney Cast Members are the gold standard, and the DCL servers made every dinner so comfortable and personalized.

I wish I could request this team for every sailing!

Next-Level Mousekeeping

Speaking of the gold standard, DCL Mousekeeping is excellent. After years of no housekeeping or modified housekeeping at post-pandemic hotels, DCL room care was luxurious. (And it’s just one of the amazing things included with your sailing !)

Not only are the rooms cleaned daily, but you also get nightly turndown service. This includes the ready-to-jump-in bed setup, towel animal creations, and chocolate pillow mints.

Regarding cleaning, DCL Mousekeeping went beyond providing fresh towels and emptying trash cans. Our personal belongings were organized, shoes were laid out, and cell phone charging cords were even wrapped up.

It was such a joy to come back to our cabin, knowing we’d see two daily room refreshes. I felt like a first-class guest.

Disney Cruise Line Stateroom

Impressive Room Storage

As a first-time cruiser, I was warned about small staterooms. We tried to rectify this by booking a larger room with a verandah. Despite that, we agreed Pop Century rooms were still huge in comparison.

But Disney knows how to maximize comfort. First, the Dream has the coveted split-bathroom setup . This is a lifesaver for couples who want to shower/brush teeth/style hair at the same time.

dream stateroom bathroom

The best amenity though is the storage. Storage in DCL rooms is amazing. It seemed like everywhere we looked there was a sleek drawer, closet, or cubby space to stow away our items. Even before Mousekeeping arrived, our room was incredibly neat.

I think WDW standard rooms could take notes.

Adjusting to Ship Movement

This is more cruise-specific than Disney-specific, but cruise ships move . Even if you have a stomach of steel, motion sickness may sneak up on you. (This is a common cruise concern.)

On a typical day, I can inhale my lunch and jump on Space Mountain, with no problem. But on my Disney Cruise, I needed my nausea wristbands and ginger ale.

Disney Cruise

The biggest hurdle is unpredictable weather. I chose a springtime sailing to avoid hurricane season. Despite that, the winds were so high/strong, we felt the ship rocking every night at dinner.

Keep in mind, the lower you are in the ship/closer to the front end or back end, the more likely you are to feel movement. For me, the Walt Disney Theater (which hosts the nightly Broadway shows) was especially rocky.

Pixar Day at Sea Disney Cruise Line Fantasy Ship

Besides the nausea wristbands, I dealt with motion sickness by keeping myself distracted. When the movement was stronger at night, I kept busy by attending shows and ship activities.

Regardless, I’m glad I didn’t assume I was sea sickness-immune.

Meeting Characters Requires Planning

My husband and I don’t currently have children, so while we love meeting characters, we don’t love waiting in their lines. Instead, we prefer character meals where the characters come to us.

Otherwise, we’ll jump in very short lines while walking through the parks. But with no littles or autograph books in tow, we feel character lines are a time suck.

disney cruise line blog menus

Well, meeting characters on a cruise proved to be harder for us. There are no character meals – at least on the Disney Dream. Lots of characters appear on the ship, but they appear at scheduled times.

After talking to a Cast Member, we learned that guests should arrive within twenty minutes of a character’s arrival time. If they don’t, the line will immediately fill up.

Chip & Dale on Disney Cruise Line

And boy do these lines fill up! The condensed amount of people (via the ship) means that character lines are longer and require early arrivals. Hopping into a short line by luck didn’t happen for us.

The only character photo we snagged was one with Captain Mickey upon boarding. This wasn’t a huge deal for us, but parents be warned. Check your Navigator App for character appearances. If not, you may miss out.

Disney Dream Mickey and Minnie

Abundance of Food

Eating is my favorite Disney activity and I knew good eats would be all over the Disney ship and Castaway Cay . I was blown away.

Personally, I had never gone on a (mostly) all-food-included vacation. We did partake in upcharges like alcoholic drinks and a dinner at Remy’s, but mostly we ate what was “free”.

Pixar Day at Sea Disney Cruise Line Fantasy Ship

Cabanas impressed us from the first welcome lunch. We loaded up our plates with crab legs and started the magical vacation feast .

From there, we indulged. We ordered free room service for breakfast, ate juicy burgers and soft serve ice cream at the pool, and sometimes got multiple entrees/appetizers at sit-down dinners.

Pixar Day at Sea Disney Cruise Line Fantasy Ship

Finding snacks was never an issue. In fact, we found ourselves too stuffed to enjoy room service for snacks or complimentary goodies in the adult-only lounges.

I can’t speak to the quality of food on other cruises, but I can say DCL food is scrumptious. We left satisfied and a couple of pounds heavier.

Amazing TV Options

This is a random thing to praise, but the TV in DCL staterooms was great. Unlike normal hotels with local cable, DCL TV is like Disney+ on steroids.

Disney trips always put me in the mood to watch Disney movies. Thanks to the on-demand Disney movie library, my husband and I watched at least one Disney movie a night.

deluxe family oceanview stateroom veranda TV

In the future, I see this being very helpful with small children. Soothing them for a nap or encouraging them to rest in the room should be easier with their favorite movie!

Compared to WDW accommodations, it felt like such a luxury. And after attending our first Pirates’ Night, we loved being able to watch Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003).

The Commitment of Pirates’ Night

Regarding Pirates’ Night, I understand the hype. As huge fans of the ride/movie franchise, we felt like Pirates’ Night was made for us.

The immersion caught us off guard – in a good way! As soon as we heard sea shanties being played over the loudspeakers, we were surrounded by guests in elaborate costumes.

The stage show was adorable and the fireworks at sea (set to Hans Zimmer music of course) were everything we dreamed of. Even the dinner was buccaneer-themed. As huge Treasure Planet (2002) fans, we loved seeing film concept art on Animator’s Palate screens.

No stone was left unturned, no detail was lost. Everything, from the atmosphere to the cast members to the other guests, was completely dedicated to Pirate-related things.

So yes, in more ways than one, cruising with DCL was a joy. Even with the learning curve, the magic was alive and well. I’m sure more sailings are in our future.

Happy Cruising everyone!
