Find out more about flights

  • In order to enter the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg (as well as the Netherlands on the tour extension), U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
  • Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code DDA.
  • You will walk for about 2.5 hours daily across moderately uneven terrain, including cobblestone streets and paved roads.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance. Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.
  • You should feel comfortable managing your own baggage at times, as well as getting in and out of ferries.
  • If you have any mobility concerns or physical restrictions, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in London and depart from Brussels (or Amsterdam on the tour extension). When you first arrive in London, a driver from a private chauffeur service will be standing at the arrival gate with your name on a message board. If you do not see your driver, please remain in the arrival lounge, as the driver may be escorting one of your fellow travelers to the shuttle at the time of your arrival. For more details, please reference the London transfer information included in your Go Kit.
  • Transfers to and from the airport at the beginning and end of the tour are included for travelers who purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours. Travelers who booked their own flights are responsible for securing their own airport transfers.
  • A ferry ride from Portsmouth to Normandy is included in the price of your tour.
  • All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.
  • Airlines have varying weight restrictions on baggage. Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage; be advised that you are responsible for any such costs.
  • Contact your airline for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that our travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other transfers, which may include train connections or flights.
  • One carry-on bag of 45 total inches (length + width + height) is also permitted.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov .
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.
  • For traditional English fare at a reasonable price, try a pub meal of fish and chips or bangers and mash. Stilton cheese, steak and kidney pie, and Cumberland sausages are also worth a try.
  • Modern-day London boasts an array of diverse international restaurants. Popular options include Indian, Thai, Chinese, Indonesian, Greek, and West African cuisines. Sip afternoon tea with delicious finger sandwiches and scones at Harrods for the ultimate in English tradition.
  • Chicken, rabbit, and duck are staples of Norman cuisine, and you can find fish and shellfish in the region’s coastal towns. The abundance of dairy farms throughout the region means many dishes are accompanied by cheeses and creams. Normandy is also famous for its apples, which are used to create cider and calvados, or apple brandy.
  • In Luxembourg, culinary influences are mostly Germanic. Smoked sausages, hams, and hearty stews are popular.
  • In Belgium, seafood is of a very high quality, and mussels steamed in white wine are a favorite. Patisseries offer decadent pastries and cakes, and you won’t want to miss indulging in favorites like fries, handmade chocolate, locally brewed Abbey-style beer, and, of course, Belgian waffles. Please note that Belgian beers vary widely in style and flavor and are often much higher in alcohol content than other European beers.
  • On the tour extension in the Netherlands, simply prepared meat and fish dishes, substantial soups and hearty stews are local staples. Snack food traditionally features fish—you might try maatje, raw green herring served with onions—but pancakes, french fries, doughnuts, and waffles are just as plentiful.
  • The United Kingdom operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and uses a Type G plug with three large, flat pins.
  • France, Luxembourg, and Belgium (as well as the Netherlands on the tour extension) operate on the European standard 220-240 volts and use Types C, E, or F plugs with two small, round pins
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • The strength of the air conditioning in European hotels is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • The United Kingdom is on Greenwich Mean Time Zone (GMT) and is five hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • France, Luxembourg, and Belgium (as well as the Netherlands on the tour extension) are one hour ahead of GMT and six hours ahead of ET.
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 5pm in the United Kingdom and 6pm in France, Luxembourg, and Belgium (plus the Netherlands on the tour extension).
  • You will use the pound sterling in the United Kingdom and the euro in France, Luxembourg, and Belgium (as well as the Netherlands on the tour extension).
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for excursions.
  • Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for your card to be charged.
  • Some optional excursions may only be purchased in advance. See page four of your tour itinerary for more information.

I was very impressed with the overall tour, sites and scheduling. Carole, specifically, made the trip as wonderful as possible.

1st-time traveler Tom, traveled in Jun 2024

The 5-6 hour delay getting out of the parking lot at the Ceremony at the Cemetery should be reviewed to see how it could be avoided. We had a dinner at 11:30 pm something we did not ear as it’s too late. This was in no way Lexy’s fault. She did a great job

2nd-time traveler Marvin, traveled in Jun 2024

This was a wonderful tour and our tour guide, Carole, was superb! She made every day a great experience and never got rattled when we had to change plans on the fly.

1st-time traveler Casey, traveled in Jun 2024

We were so fortunate to have Carol as our guide. It is quite the challenge to herd 30+ Americans through Europe and she did so with an enthusiasm and grace. She is incredibly knowledgeable on the regions we visited and she had a deep level understanding of WWII. I was impressed... Read more of Five Stars for Carol

D-Day & the Band of Brothers: Normandy to the Eagle’s Nest

June 6 th marked the 80 th anniversary of “D-Day,” the momentous turning point towards Allied victory in WWII. The event has been made famous by movies such Saving Private Ryan or the miniseries Band of Brothers, which recounts the story of the US 101 st Airborne Division’s “Easy Company,” from the Battle of Normandy through the Battle of the Bulge till the taking of Hitler’s infamous Eagle’s Nest in Berchtesgaden.

When Easy Company – the “Band of Brothers – arrived in Berchtesgaden they discovered an impressive treasure trove of artwork and wine collected by Goering and hidden in his train and in underground bunkers. Among numerous other topics, I describe the stolen art collections and where they were stashed in Germany and Austria in my latest book, EXPOSING THE REICH, which is available on Amazon.

In honor of the bravery and sacrifice of the WWII soldiers and to commemorate the 80 th anniversary of D-Day, I am leading a “Normandy to the Eagle’s Nest” tour this September.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The D-Day Landing sites : In Normandy we visit the American landing zones of Utah Beach and Omaha Beach, as well as a section of the British landing zone. We’ll also tour museums, such as the Airborne museum, as well as other sites related to what happened on D-Day and during the months to follow.
  • V-1 & V-2 Sites: The German Armed Forces selected an area in the North of France as a site to assemble, test and launch the infamous V “flying bombs”, rockets and super-cannons. Several colossal bunkers – known as Sonderbauten (special structures) were built by forced labor in the Pas-de-Calais region to develop, house and deploy these massive operations. We shall visit two of these impressively large and massive sites.
  • Dunkirk: As dramatically portrayed in the 2017 motion picture “Dunkirk” this French harbor is where tens of thousands of British and French troops regrouped as they became surrounded by the rapidly advancing German armed forces. Though some 338,000 Allied servicemen were successfully evacuated, tens of thousands were taken prisoner or killed.
  • Atlantic Wall Bunkers : A noteworthy part of the Germans’ Atlantic Wall chain of coastal defenses can be visited near the town of Ostend, Belgium. The Atlantic Wall Open Air Museum comprises massive fortifications with elements from both the First and Second World Wars.
  • Wolfsschlucht: We discover Hitler’s near-unknown HQs in the Belgian forest that he personally used during the French invasion.
  • Battle of the Bulge: We not only visit the Mardasson Monument and its adjoining Battle of the Bulge museum in Bastogne but we’ll explore the Bois Jacques woods to locate original foxholes used by the men of the 101st Airborne Division – the ‘Band of Brothers’ – during the fierce fighting in the Ardennes region in the freezing cold of winter.
  • Luxembourg: We pay our respects at the cemetery where General Patton is buried, along with thousands of American soldiers who died during the Battle of the Bulge.
  • Nuremberg: We visit the courtroom where the most infamous war criminals and Nazi leaders were put on trial, as well as its adjoining interpretive center. We also visit the Nuremberg Party Rally grounds and its surviving structures.
  • Munich and Dachau: We visit downtown Munich while discovering some of the architectural sites linked to the 3rd Reich in the Bavarian capital. We’ll also tour the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site.
  • Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest and Berchtesgaden: We stay in Berchtesgaden, location of Hitler’s former HQs. Here we’ll tour the underground bunkers, the interpretation center, the site of the destroyed Berghof (Hitler’s home) as well as the Eagle’s Nest, perched atop a 6,000 foot peak.

There are still four spots left on this tour. If you’re interested please email us at [email protected]

The last heroes of Normandy return to France 80 years after D-Day invasion

d day 80th anniversary tours

The sun was yet to rise over the beaches of Normandy when, on June 6, 1944 -- 80 years ago this week -- thousands of American sons and Allied troops began what would become the largest amphibious assault in history.

Their bravery and their sacrifice would turn the tide of World War II and push Nazi Germany to defeat.

For the last five years, ABC News' "World News Tonight" anchor David Muir and his team have traveled around the country documenting the stories of World War II veterans who landed on those beaches on D-Day and the days that followed.

For the 80th anniversary of the Allied invasion, Muir met these quiet heroes as they journeyed back to Normandy, many of them for the first time since landing there as young soldiers fighting for freedom.

Out of the 16.4 million Americans who served in the armed forces during WWII, less than 1% of them were still alive at the end of 2023, according to estimates from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs .

The country loses an average of 131 WWII veterans every day.

'People have to know that freedom is not free.'

Irving Locker is 99 years old, but in 1944 he was a 19-year-old staff sergeant in charge of 65 men. Drafted right out of high school in 1943, he went on to be in the First Army, 4th Infantry Div., 116th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion.

And he was with his battalion that fateful day in June. His orders: land and run through the beach and start setting up your guns.

He remembers the moment when -- at 5 feet tall -- he jumped into the frigid waters as German forces attacked the beaches.

"I've never seen as many dead men on the beaches as I've seen," he told ABC News of the invasion.

"Everybody was scared," Locker said. "The long life we figured we're gonna have could be ended with one bullet, or one bomb, or one mine."

Reflecting on his acts of service and those who paid the ultimate price with their lives, Locker said, "People have to know that freedom is not free."

"So I'm doing that now with my full heart and conscience," he said of returning to Normandy.

'It was just ... tough for a little old kid to handle'

d day 80th anniversary tours

Jack Claiborne of Dyersburg, Tennessee, drove the troops to Omaha Beach on LCI 492. He was a helmsman and gunner.

"Seeing all of these boys that was killed, and just layin’ there on the beach," Claiborne told ABC News in 2019. "It was just ... tough for a little old kid to handle."

"We were all young," he said.

Claiborne died on September 28, 2023. His family told ABC News this year, he was proud to have served, and to have spent his last years talking about the war to younger generations.

'Eighty years. And the people of Normandy are still honoring us.'

d day 80th anniversary tours

At 102 years old, WWII veteran Andrew "Tim" Kiniry was just 22 when he landed on Omaha beach in the days after the invasion.

With no time to think and there to help the injured as a medic with the 45th Evacuation Hospital, Kiniry said soldiers had to keep moving.

As a young man at war, Kiniry kept a list of his outfit’s movements. Under June 1944, that list had two words: "bloody beach.”

Kiniry, who has lived in Vineland, New Jersey since 1964, fears the sacrifices of D-Day will be forgotten if veterans don’t share what they went through during the war.

Not a day goes by he doesn’t think about the men lost during the invasion. Now 80 years later, he’s going back to Normandy for the first time since he first landed there.

"Eighty years, and the people of Normandy are still honoring us," Kiniry told Muir. "That's somethin' that gets – gets to me."

'It was just, take care of your friend. And that’s what we all did.'

d day 80th anniversary tours

Harold Himmelsbach landed in Normandy on D-Day at age 18, and called it "the most dramatic time" in his life.

Himmelsbach, who's now 98, said in an interview with Muir commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day that he remembers seeing "things that very few people would ever see" in their lifetime. "I would see other guys die within feet of me."

"You knew you had to do these things," he continued. "It was just take care of your friend. And that’s what we all did."

He remembers the letter he wrote to his mother.

“Dear mom I suppose I should begin by telling you I’m somewhere in France," Himmelsbach wrote.

'There was a job had to be done. Somebody had to do it. We did it.'

d day 80th anniversary tours

Born and raised in Dora, Alabama, Harold McMurran served with the 546th Ord as a FA, Instrument Fire Control Repairman, on June 6, 1944, on Utah Beach and faced 300,000 Germans.

Like many soldiers, McMurran kept a diary. On D-Day, he wrote, “June 6, 1944. Invasion started." He wouldn't write in his diary for the next five days.

d day 80th anniversary tours

In 2019, McMurran told ABC News he watched the medics trying to save his friends. "Sometimes they would be in worse shape than the men they were trying to take care of," he said.

"People say, 'How did you get off that boat and go in on that beach?' There was a job had to be done," he said, holding back tears. "Somebody had to do it. We did it."

McMurran, who received the French Legion of Honor Medal, died on Dec. 25, 2022.

'You always went with the idea you were gonna make it through.'

d day 80th anniversary tours

Jake Ruser was a combat medic in Normandy with the 4th Infantry Division, 2nd Brigade Medical Detachment, 12 Inf. Reg.

"For 67 years, I never talked about it," he told Muir in the hallways of a high school in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, where he went to speak to a high school history class about the sacrifices made for freedom.

Those students were nearly the same age that Ruser was when he was sent off to war.

"You always went with the idea you were gonna make it through," he told the students.

'You grow up in a hurry.'

d day 80th anniversary tours

In Gainesville, Georgia, Alan Kinder prepared for his first trip back to Normandy since the invasion.

He remembers how the country came together when word got out that American troops had landed in France. And the scene when he got to Utah beach in the middle of the night.

"We knew the people had to be killed," he told ABC News. "You grow up in a hurry."

Kinder now grateful he gets to share his story, saying talking about it with his grandson, Justin, a history teacher, has brought them closer.

They traveled together to Normandy.

"Being able to come here and experience this with him, it's – words can't describe it," Justin said. "It's amazing."

'I didn’t realize what war was until that day.'

d day 80th anniversary tours

Onofrio Zicari, 96, of Las Vegas, fought with the 5th Amphibious Brigade, 5th Wave on D-Day.

"Man I was scared," Zicari told ABC News. "I didn’t realize what war was until that day; it was awful.”

d day 80th anniversary tours

Now, 80 years after answering the call, Ruser, Kimora, Locker, Kinder and Zicari return to Normandy with help from the nonprofit, “Forever Young Veterans.”

Just before the anniversary commemorations, the five brave heroes journeyed back to Utah beach, where Muir met them.

Kinder, who has not set foot back on that beach until now, said he is grateful to be here. This is also the first time he has seen Utah Beach in the daylight.

"When they told me there was a chance to come here, I've kinda lived my life over again," he said. "I've really, really enjoyed that."

Locker told Muir that returning to Normandy meant that he came back because he’s determined to honor the sacrifices of D-Day, and hopes to connect with the next generation.

"I thank God every single day that I'm alive and well," he said. "And people have to know that. People have to know that."

Kiniry told Muir being back in Utah Beach reminded him of the brave men, his brothers, who were lost.

"It means a great deal to me to be here today to honor ... the ones that lost their lives in particular," he told Muir.

Ruser also took notice of the large number of people honoring the sacrifices WWII veterans made in Normandy. And as strangers approached them to shake their hands, he was moved by their gratitude.

"We're meeting people from all over the world," he said. "It's really – something when you're remembering what happened 80 years ago here."

Zicari, who Muir first met five years ago, returned to Normandy again, thinking of the future.

"We fought for freedom," he said. "We gotta have the younger generation help us now."

"We're depending on them. They depended on us. We're gonna depend on them now," Zicari added.

MORE: Women veterans return to Normandy for 80th D-Day anniversary

Diane Hight, the founder of "Forever Young Veterans," told Muir about the mission they hope to achieve.

"We must never forget," she said. "A lot of people think, 'Oh. Well, how nice that you take these vets on trips.' These are not vacations."

"Do you know why they really wanna come back?" she continued. "They want to say to their friends that did not come home, 'I haven't forgotten you. And I hope I've lived my life where you're proud of me.'"

The Top 12 Things to Do in Omsk

Feel the love in the very heart of Russia

In Russia, all roads lead to Moscow , on account of the city's status as the national capital and its importance throughout history. If geography were the deciding factor, however, the Siberian city of Omsk would be the point where all Russia's roads converge—it's located literally in the heart of the country, approximately as far from Vladivostok as it is from the Belarusian border. Omsk boasts a spate of exciting attractions, even if you simply make a stop here as you ride the Trans-Siberian Railway eastward or westward.

Marvel at Assumption Cathedral

Chelsea Hicks/Flickr/CC BY 2.0

Orthodox architecture never gets old, even if you've been traveling in Russia for a long time. This is particularly the case when it comes to the Assumption Cathedral of Omsk, whose gold-and-turquoise domes look resplendent under the blue skies that bless Omsk during the warmer months of the year. The cathedral was built in 1891 under the orders Nicholas, the last Tsar of Russia.

Time Travel at Omsk Fortress

Ogg-omsk/Wikimedia Commons/CC BY-SA 3.0

The bad news? Much of what was once Omsk Fortress is now a residential area, with the only notable landmark that still stands being Tobolsk Gate (think Paris' Arc de Triomphe , but yellow and smaller). The good news? There's essentially no reason for a military fortification to exist in today's peaceful Omsk, which means you can stroll amid parks and cafés and imagine the area being war-torn—a small sacrifice to make in exchange for not being blown to bits.

Go Green at Ptich'ya Gavan'

Forinrap/Wikimedia Commons/CC BY-SA 4.0

Or white, as it were: Omsk is covered with snow several months of the year, which means that its prized Ptich'ya Gavan' central park is often more of a winter wonderland than the green reprieve you experience in summer. The park is popular with local families, to whom you can say "Privet" (Hello) as you walk past.

Walk on Omsk's Artsy Side

G0rn/Wikimedia Commons/CC BY 3.0

Although the building that houses Omsk District Museum of Visual Arts is unmistakably Russian, the collection you find inside is surprisingly eclectic for a city deep in Russia's interior. Recent collections have included a revival of Van Gogh's great works, among others. This is a particularly enjoyable Omsk attraction on cold winter days, when temperatures can drop far below freezing and sunshine can be rare.

Though Omsk is a relatively large city, the skies over it become dark enough in the evening for stargazing. While visitors are not permitted to use the expensive telescopes housed inside, exhibits inside the museum provide a fascinating look into the cosmos, narrated by expert astronomical guides.

Shop on Lenin Street

Lenin Street's name is appropriate: Although it's the high street of a city thousands of miles from Moscow, the European-style architecture and cosmopolitan vibe you feel as you stroll past its boutique and cafés evokes the capital of Russia more than its forlorn interior. Local specialties you can purchase here include rustic jams made from local berries (and even, in some shops, cedar cones), as well as handmade rugs from Kazakhstan, which sits just south of Omsk.

Sample Siberian Cuisine

Quynh Anh Nguyen/Getty Images

Speaking of unique Siberian food, it's not just preserves made from the fruits of evergreen trees. Omsk is a great place to discover the flavors of Russia's wild interior, whether you eat zagutai and stroganini (Siberia's take on sushi) or classic Russian plmeni dumplings filled with decidedly Siberian ingredients, such as bear and rabbit meat. Vkusno ! (That's Russian for "delicious"!)

Enjoy Historical Houses—While You Still Can

Simon Richmond/Getty Images

The wooden houses that line Nikolskiy Prospekt aren't protected, but they should be. Historical structures that are unfortunately in a state of disrepair, these houses are slated for demolition at some unspecific point in the future. Be sure to catch a glimpse of these historical house before they're gone. There will, however, be at least one left standing for a long time. The Omsk State Art Museum is in a traditional wooden house.

Go to the Circus

Vladislav Domnich/Getty Images

Omsk State Circus is a popular spot for local families, whose children love the opportunity to see acrobatic performances and animals that wouldn't otherwise make appearance in Siberia. If you do attend a show here, keep in mind that ethics with regard to animal treatment might not match up with those in North America or Western Europe, to say nothing of the smell that can pervade the auditorium during and even after a show.

Be a Drama Queen

While there's no guarantee that any shows will be playing at Omsk Drama Theater at the time of your trip, a visit to this 19th century building is a spectacle in and of itself. While not as huge, say, as Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, it's nonetheless an ornate architectural wonder that hearkens back to a glorious time in history. The interior of the theater is even open during the daytime; ask the person who's inside if any tours are available when you turn up.

Explore Cities Deeper in Siberia

Tuul & Bruno Morandi/Getty Images

Siberia starts in Omsk, even if you can't continue far into it. If you don't plan to travel on the Trans-Siberian Railway, take one of two day trips from Omsk. Travel to Tobolsk, whose hilltop Kremlin is one of the most picturesque in all of Russia, and whose beauty inspired a photo by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev that ended up winning several awards. Or visit Tomsk, where you'll find a botanical garden dedicated to Siberian flora, and a museum that celebrates wooden architecture.

Ride the Trans-Siberian Railway

 lvinst/Getty Images

The idea of leaving Omsk behind can seem difficult, especially now that you've gotten to know this city in the heart of Siberia as well as you have. The mint-colored facade of Omsk Railway Station will make you smile, however, even if you're crying inside as you depart. Though it's not quite on the mid-line of the Trans-Siberian route between Moscow and Beijing , Omsk is a worthy starting place to begin a journey to either. If you head east make sure to stop in Irkutsk , the home of Lake Baikal and another underrated Siberian city.

2024 Election

To mark d-day, biden will deliver a defense of democracy that hits on campaign themes.

President Biden is in France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when tens of thousands of allied troops landed on the beaches at Normandy and turned the tide in World War II.

It's a pilgrimage that many American presidents have made, but as Biden does it, the lessons of 80 years ago are being debated once again — and hold particular resonance for his reelection bid.

The anniversary comes as a land war rages once again in the European continent with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, raising the stakes as World War II fades from people’s memories and into the history books.

"He will take full advantage of the opportunity to talk about the moment we are living in: of democracies working together on behalf of their peoples — but also the importance of American leadership," John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council, told reporters.

Biden argues that democracy is under attack

To get a sense of how Biden sees this current moment in the sweep of history, look no further than his most recent State of the Union address. He started with the image of President Franklin Roosevelt in early 1941, months before the attack on Pearl Harbor that would draw the United States into World War II.

“President Roosevelt’s purpose was to wake up Congress and alert the American people that this was no ordinary time,” said Biden, delivering his remarks in the same House chamber where Roosevelt had spoken. “Freedom and democracy were under assault in the world.”

The United States was still on the sidelines in the war at that point. But Hitler was on the march in Europe, and American allies were under attack. Like then, Biden argued, this is no ordinary time.

“What makes our moment rare is that freedom and democracy are under attack both at home and overseas at the very same time,” said Biden.

Biden is giving a speech from Pointe du Hoc

Expect Biden to expand on those themes in an address to the American people he’s set to deliver from Pointe du Hoc, overlooking the beaches where the Americans landed on June 6, 1944. More than 70,000 American troops joined allied forces for the dangerous and daring D-Day operation. Casualties were heavy, with 2,500 Americans killed on D-Day itself and some 29,000 more in the Battle of Normandy that followed.

Biden says the fight for democracy is at the heart of his 2024 rematch with Trump

While Biden's address isn’t a campaign speech, the undercurrent will be unavoidable. Biden has framed his reelection campaign against former President Donald Trump in stark terms, as he did at a fundraiser in New York earlier this week.

"What those soldiers died for should never be given up,” said Biden. “Democracy is literally on the ballot this year.”

Asked whether this speech about democracy and freedom was aimed at Trump, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said it would focus on universal themes. “Principles that have served as the foundation of American security and American democracy for generations, including the generation that scaled those cliffs, including today’s generation, including the next generation,” Sullivan told reporters traveling with Biden on Air Force One. “He’s going to be speaking in terms of principles and values and lessons from history that are applicable today.”

Trump has questioned the value of the NATO alliance

Biden, who describes Trump as an existential threat to America’s place as a global leader, takes pride in marshalling U.S. allies to support Ukraine after Russia's invasion, and expanding NATO to include two new members.

While at the international commemoration of D-Day on Thursday, Biden is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the leaders will discuss the state of play in the war with Russia, Sullivan said. Biden recently authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied weapons to strike inside Russia, an escalation as the war grinds into its third year.

Republicans in the Trump wing of the Republican Party have questioned the utility of ongoing U.S. support for Ukraine. And Trump himself has repeatedly toyed with the idea of the U.S. not keeping its commitment to the NATO alliance.

Trump says he wouldn't defend NATO allies from Russia if they're 'delinquent'

Trump says he wouldn't defend NATO allies from Russia if they're 'delinquent'

During a campaign rally in February, Trump said America would not defend allies that did not spend enough money on their own defense, should Russia attack them. “In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want," Trump said.

The NATO alliance and its commitment to mutual defense grew out of the experience of World War II. And polling from the Chicago Council on Global Affairs finds the majority of Americans still support that alliance.

“We have understood for so long now since D-Day really, that our security, our prosperity and our freedom depends on the security, prosperity and freedom of our allies around the world,” said Ivo Daalder, who heads the Chicago Council and was the U.S. ambassador to NATO during the Obama administration.

But Daalder says isolationist views are growing. “NATO is becoming politicized in a way it never was until this point,” said Daalder.

What Reagan said at the same spot Biden will deliver his speech

There’s a massive gulf between Trump’s message today and the one then-President Ronald Reagan delivered 40 years ago at a D-Day ceremony in Normandy.

“We in America have learned bitter lessons from two World Wars. It is better to be here ready to protect the peace than to take blind shelter across the sea, rushing to respond only after freedom is lost,” Reagan said then. “We’ve learned that isolationism never was and never will be an acceptable response to tyrannical governments with expansionist intent.”

A lot has changed since 1984. The Berlin Wall fell. The Cold War ended. The Soviet Union dissolved, only for Russian President Vladimir Putin to decades later attempt to rebuild it.

In Ukraine, the vote to renew U.S. aid was cheered. But unease for the future remains

In Ukraine, the vote to renew U.S. aid was cheered. But unease for the future remains

There are echoes of that Reagan speech in the way Biden describes Putin and his war in Ukraine. But many people aren’t buying that argument.

“You could feel the loss of understanding at the end of the Cold War of what our allies were for,” said Heather Conley, director of the German Marshall Fund of the United States.

Conley is in the midst of a tour of the country, trying to make the case for continued U.S. military aid to Ukraine. And she’s getting an earful.

“The American people have some important questions to ask about what’s important about our security, our level of debt,” said Conley. “These are the right questions to ask. But you have to engage them in a conversation.”

Conley, who was a senior official in former President George W. Bush's State Department, said she's glad Biden is giving the speech this week. But she said she wishes he had made this case more forcefully and more often.

“If it’s important to the country, we have to have an important conversation with our citizens,” said Conley.
