Throttle Control or Electronic Cruise Control

cruise control v strom 650

  • Add to quote

Hello my fellow V-Strom Enthusiasts, I am on the fence whether or not to fork out the cash for an electronic cruise control (MC Cruise), or go with the cheaper option and purchase a Kaoko throttle control. We are talking about a $500 difference. I was hoping if any of you can provide insight on your experiences or recommendations. Thanks!

An electronic cruise control is so much better. It is easier to engage, disengages when the brake is applied, keeps the set speed regardless of down or up road angle changes and never vibrates down to a lower throttle opening. The cheaper option I would prefer is a Rostra or CCS100 Electronic CC. Both are far from plug and play though.

cruise control v strom 650

I have the Rostra, about $250. The installation is straightforward if you follow the instructions in the CC thread, but long. It is more or less a full day to install. I have used both a throttle lock and the Rostra. If you ride mostly on flat interstate, the throttle lock is sufficient. If you simply want brief respite for your right hand, the throttle lock is sufficient. If however, you want constant speed and freedom to move your right hand around, then an electronic cruise control is the way to go. After using one for over 80,000 miles on an '09 650, it was the first farkle I bought for the new '15 DL1000. Sent from my SM-G930U using Tapatalk

I am happy w/ the Kaoka, you have to be aware of inclines etc. to anticipate the+- of the speed, but that just keeps ya aware of the whole situation.

cruise control v strom 650

My only reason for having a cruise control is to keep the police off my back. I can set my speed then ignore the speedo, I will be within +or - 1kph of the set speed. A throttle lock will give your right hand a break but it will not maintain a set speed.

cruise control v strom 650

It also works well on long curvy and hilly roads like the Blue Ridge Parkway. Sent from my SM-G930U using Tapatalk

Not so much once you hit NC. :wink2:

cruise control v strom 650

To disengage a throttle lock you have to pull the clutch and turn the throttle all the way forward at the same time, not so easy to do in a panic situation, like if a deer suddenly appears or a ladder is on the road or something. Does that ever happen? Likely not, but it could. A real cruise control will maintain a set speed and you can +/- it which would be awesome, disadvantage being cost and installation.

You've got a pretty good cross section of answers already. From my point of view if the money spent won't prevent you from getting something else you need, ... go all the way. Or if you care for simplicity get a thumb-lever mechanical throttle lock. I have one bike with a electronic cruise. OEM BMW. Works as good or better than any you'd find in a car. All the others, including my V2, have the old style thumb lock . I never feel cheated by the simple ones. In fact I think they are just as easy to use and reaching down to add / remove a touch of speed is just as normal as checking my mirrors. Which ever way you go it is worth it for long hauls not have the right side of your body handcuffed to one position.

People just love to spend money. My $30 C clamp type has worked great for years. I was even just looking at that Torowhatzit chain oiler. $150+ Canadian. Think I'll just stick to sittin on the ground and cleaning and oiling before big rides.:laugh2:

I think you have plenty of good responses, and I'd probably go with one of the elec cruise options if the install wasn't daunting to someone of my skill level. But to comment on the "cheaper" options I've had the Kaoko now on two bikes including my V2 and I've found that on long days it tries to back itself off my handlebars if I use it too long holding 75+ mph. Something the Throttlemeister has not done in almost 14 years on my Honda ST13. Not sure if they make one for the V2 with handguards? Its a pretty quick adjustment, but another allen key to carry in my tank bag and something I have to check at gas stops. Ride Safe, TRM

cruise control v strom 650

Maybe age has something to do with it? ...or maybe not. Always used throttle locks, and felt they were "adequate". Then, after somewhere near 400,000 miles I put a Rostra Electronic CC on my '07 DL650. Holeey crap, I am now officially spoiled and will never own another road bike without eeeee lec Tronic cruise.

My next ADV bike will have it "factory", I am just not going to go through the hassle of installing aftermarket on my Strom......kudos to those that have. :smile2:

cruise control v strom 650

I just installed a brakeaway device and love it, turns off with use of brakes and very easy to set. I would call it the in between option that is better than most, but not as great as electronic of course. But it works wonderful.

Name please od devi6

When I had my Vee I used a cramp buster and a throttle lock. It was effective but not as safe as I liked. But, it allowed right wrist and shoulder rest. As for cruise, it came standard on my second S10. I still use the same cramp buster. I will not be without CC again on any bike for any use. I used to not feel this way. I also avoid long, boring roads. But, I find myself setting the CC at low speeds, like 35 mph even, to give my wrist and especially shoulder muscles a break. I love it now. And for that interstate that we all need to ride every now and then CC makes it as nice as possible, still boring, but nice. But, like I opened with, a throttle lock is better than nothing and 90% effective as a cruise control.

cruise control v strom 650

I've been farkling up my current Vee2 (almost done, I swear) and it is addicting. I've pretty much left all my previous bikes stock. Currently content with the Kaoko throttle lock for occasional use/relief. I loved the factory cruise on my K1200LT. I think if I ever decide I must have electric CC, it will come factory installed on my next new bike. A man's got to know his limitations!

I've used both, and in my opinion, there is no comparison between cruise control and a throttle lock! It's a perfect example of getting what you pay for. If you invest the time and $$ in cruise, you will never regret it; if you go throttle lock, you will be at least a little dissatisfied every time you use it. At least I was.

To those who have never had a real electronic cruise control on your bike, disrespectfully, your opinion has no basis in comparison. I decided upon having a bike with ABS brakes and a real electronic cruise control that I'd never have a bike without either again.

I have an Atlas throttle lock on my 650. Works fine and speed is easy to adjust, simply open or close the throttle. It also fits any bike so you can take it with you. Google Atlas throttle lock

cruise control v strom 650

Another big thumbs up for the Rostra CC. The installation wasn't that hard, but it was time consuming. Like others have said, it'll take the better part of a day to install. I really can't add anything else that hasn't already said.

When I put the CC on my '07 Wee, I just figured it was the next thing I'd like to have at the time. It, an aftermarket windscreen and a better seat were the three main changes that made the bike a great touring mount. I didn't realize how important I would consider it until I had it and headed for the Rockies. When I got the Glee in '12, I rode it a couple of weeks to make sure it didn't have any warranty issues then took it apart to add all the stuff I learned I wanted to have from riding the Wee. Windscreen, seat and cruise control along with support for heated gear were the must have items.

cruise control v strom 650

I'm currently using an Omni Cruise throttle lock. I really want CC. My right hand and wrist are pretty beat up and I believe CC would be a lot nicer.

I see a lot of mention of Rostra. I didn't find any motorcycle specific on their site. Are people fitting the universal model to MC's?

Yes, use the universal one. Rostra does not support motorcycle installations, so you may be depending on this group for your main source of tech support. The good news is that there are some experienced competent installed here. Sent from my SM-G930U using Tapatalk

Mad, here is just one of many Rostra install threads...lots's good info: http://www.stromtrooper.com/mainten...onic-cruise-control-install-instructions.html Here is another one, but I warn you......RuggyBuggy's Avatar will permanently sear your retina : http://www.stromtrooper.com/dl650-dl650a-2004-2011/37860-rostra-cruise-control-fairing.html

I too am interested in an electronic cruise control. Thanks to Rolex and others, I think I will spend the $$$ on the McCruise unit. It is motorcycle specific and brand specific. The guys at McCruise have already answered several of my questions very quickly. I think the install might be over my head so I went to my local trusted mechanic and he said he could do it. When I sent that info to McCruise they told me -"No problem and if he needs anything tell him to shot them and email or call." And they provided a number. So far, great customer service and I think it will continue. Will keep you posted on how it goes.

Cruise Control options

What are the options for Cruise control? I saw this one at twistedthrottle.com but it is $125. I want to basically reduce wrist/hand fatigue. http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/4761/202/

cruise control v strom 650

there are several throttle lock options Kaoko, Throttlemeister, NEP, Vista but you can get REAL cruise control for the same money or less than kaoko or Throttlemeister, with the caveat that installation is a bit more technical Audiovox CS100 universal cruise control can be fitted as well as Rostra Electronic Cruise control both are common add ons for V-stroms including the 650, no reason you couldn't install it on a SV

I think a "cruise control" or something that actually locks your throttle open on a bike a is a bad idea when it comes to safety on a motorcycle. Some might say "well all cars have cruise control" but the difference is that as soon as you tap the brakes in you car the cruise turns off. Most aftermarket motorcycle cruise controls don't work this way and I can envision horrible consequences to a locked throttle in a panic situation. If hand , wrist and forearm fatigue is your problem, consider these 3 alternatives... 1. Get some weights or hit the gym and work on your hand and forearm muscles. 2. Do the R6 throttle tube mod. (search the forum for info) This mode converts your throttle to a 1/5th tun throttle instead of the 1/4th turn stock which means you don't have to twist as far to go from closed to open throttle. 3. Get a throttle assist device like a throttle rocker or crampbuster. I don't like these devices for around the town or blasting twisties but they are a god send on long highway runs. Throttle Rocker http://www.throttlerocker.com/ Crampbuster http://www.crampbuster.com/ (I have and prefer this model)

People actually install cruise control units on motorcycles. http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/cruise-control.htm

Wow, this looks really complicated! I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has done this mod on a SV650SF.

cruise control v strom 650

There is a guy I ride with who has the throtlemiester. It is really cool. When u lock the throttle down, obviously it stays at that throttle imput. U can still roll the throttle on further, or less though with little force so safety isn't too much of an issue. It'll stay where ever u put it. It's basicaly a bar end with some sort of spring tension. When u twist the bar end it sinches down on the throttle tube. Twist back and the tension is off allowing the throttle spring to regain control. The bar ends look cool too. I want one for droning.

cruise control v strom 650

I'm a big fan of the Vista Cruise throttle lock. When you adjust the tension properly, rolling the throttle open or closed is easy; It just won't close by itself. The only downside is that you have to carefully modify your throttle tube and trim down your grip for it all to work. Once you get it set up properly, it flicks on and off easily, and really saves your hand/wrist on long rides.

I don't think i'd ever get any use out of a cruise control device. I can't ever use the cruise contol on my car for more then a few minutes at a time before some a whole decides to get in my lane going 20mph slower then me.

It's more for long-distance trips, or commutes where there is absolutely nothing.

cruise control v strom 650

Not sure how similar the wiring is but the DL guys, both 1000 and 650 (V-Strom and Wee-Strom) install the Rostra units with great success. They have switch/relays that cut off the control when either clutch or brake levers are pulled and tap the "R" resume button and it picks up right where it left off just like an automotive install. Because it's an automotive unit. I was about to post a question here as to whether anyone has done it but after a search it appears not. I've used one on my neighbors DL1000 and I know that it works, just wasn't sure how similar the wiring was to facilitate an SV install. Any comments?

cruise control v strom 650

My bike had a mechanical cruise control on it from the PO when I bought it. Without engaging it, it managed to hold my throttle open for me while I was going into a turn. If it was on an open road maybe I could have responded in time but since it was in my development (with people watching) the turns are too tight to complete at that speed. Atleast I have my inevitable crash under my belt but I wont be using a cruise control anymore.

Just read one install for the Vista and came across this gem: "This leaves me free to release the grip with my right hand and adjust the volume on my stereo, get a stick of gum out, fix my glasses, wipe a bug off my forhead or do anything that requires my right hand to do (I'm right handed and my left hand is "out to lunch" most of the time)."

cruise control v strom 650

- Liquid-cooled 645cm³, 90-degree, V-twin engine delivers strong torque in the low to mid rpm range yet provides a strong rush of high-rpm power that's ideal for any riding mission.

- Suzuki's Advanced Traction Control System*, Easy Start System, Low RPM Assist feature, plus ABS** technology make a great motorcycle incredible.

- Adventure fairing, with the distinctive V-Strom front "beak" design, vertically stacked headlights, and three-way adjustable windscreen, houses a multifunction, illumination-adjustable instrument panel that delivers a wealth of information.

- The strong and light chassis has integrated mount points for unified Suzuki V-Strom luggage that's easy to clip on and off and keeps the motorcycle trim when ready for touring.

- Using SV650 street model engineering, the V-Strom 650/XT's liquid-cooled, DOHC, V-twin engine has been tuned to deliver clean, strong power throughout its operating range.

- Low-friction resin-coated pistons and SCEM-coated cylinders help deliver high mileage for class-leading touring range.

- Unique engine under cowling and select fasteners are designed to permit the use of Torx drivers or conventional hex-style tools.

- The sleek 2-into-1 exhaust system routes below the chassis to reduce weight, centralize mass, and provide space for a narrow tail section (and optional luggage).

- The exhaust system has twin catalytic converters and employs O2 feedback to the electronic fuel injection system to produce optimum combustion efficiency and reduce emissions to an incredibly low level.

- The fuel-injection system employs Suzuki's innovative SDTV (Suzuki Dual Throttle Valve) on 39mm throttle bodies. The secondary throttle valves are controlled by a servo motor for smooth power delivery.

- Long-nosed 10-hole fuel injectors on each throttle body improve fuel atomization for better combustion efficiency while reducing fuel consumption.

- Suzuki's patented Throttle-body Integrated Idle Speed Control (TI-ISC) stabilizes the engine idle speed and helps lower emissions. The system is compact and lightweight.

- Suzuki's Low RPM Assist feature leverages TI-ISC to seamlessly adjust engine speed to smooth power delivery during standing starts and low-speed riding. It also helps reduce the possibility of the rider stalling the motorcycle.

- The Engine Control Module (ECM) helps realize state-of-the-art engine management and has enhanced settings to suit the updated intake and exhaust systems, resulting in better fuel economy and linear throttle response.

- The engine uses Suzuki's Dual Spark Technology heads with two high-energy, slim electrode spark plugs per cylinder, which aid in combustion efficiency and power production.

- The V-Strom 650/XT is equipped with Suzuki's Advanced Traction Control System*, which lets the rider control the throttle with more confidence in various riding conditions. It continuously monitors front and rear wheel speeds, throttle opening, engine speed, and the selected transmission gear to adjust engine output if wheel spin is detected.

- There are three traction control modes (1, 2, and OFF), and the difference between the modes is their sensitivity to road conditions. Mode 1 is the lower sensitivity level, most suitable for skilled riders or in conditions that have good road surface grip (riding on good, smooth roads). Mode 2 is the higher sensitivity level, suitable for road conditions where the grip may be limited (wet or cold surfaces). OFF disengages all traction control features.

- This V-Strom also features the Suzuki Easy Start System, which lets the rider start the motorcycle with one quick press of the start button, and without pulling in the clutch lever when the transmission is in neutral.

- The compact radiator is flanked by wind-directing plates that enhance cooling efficiency and direct heat out of the side vents away from the rider's legs.

- The 6-speed transmission suits sporty rides with tight first through fifth gear ratios and a tall top gear (sixth gear) for highway cruising.

- Low-maintenance, long-life sealed O-ring drive chain is standard.

- The beak-style fairing, with vertically stacked headlights and a new mounting structure, helps the V-Strom 650/XT cut through the wind and protect the rider in style.

- The three-way height-adjustable windscreen was wind tunnel tested to reduce wind noise, buffeting, and rider fatigue.

- The fuel tank has a generous 20.0L capacity but is shaped to be thin at the rear to flow into the slimmer seat, so it aids the rider in touching the ground at stops.

- The spacious two-up seat combines smooth and slip-resistant surfaces, plus an embossed V-Strom logo.

- The lightweight, rigid twin-spar aluminum frame and swingarm contribute to smooth handling performance and excellent stability.

- Spring-preload-adjustable 43mm front forks and link-type rear suspension are combined with a rebound damping adjustment and hand-operated spring preload adjuster.

- The sporty 10-spoke cast aluminum wheels on the V-Strom 650 help maximize road holding ability and reduce weight.

- The V-Strom 650XT features wire-spoked wheels with aluminum rims that absorb shock better on rough surfaces due to the flexible character of spokes.

- A 19-inch front and 17-inch rear Bridgestone BATTLAX ADVENTURE A40 tubeless radial tire is mounted to the wheels for all-around good performance.

- Front dual 310mm disc brakes and a rear 260mm disc brake deliver controlled stopping power.

- A compact Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)** monitors wheel speed to match braking to available traction.

- The lightweight rear carrier incorporates easy-to-grasp grab bars and aligns with the passenger section of the seat, offering a larger surface for carrying cargo or luggage.

- The V-Strom 650XT comes with knuckle covers and a protective engine under cowling.

- The multifunction instrument panel features brightness-adjustable LED backlighting for its large diameter analog tachometer, digital speedometer, and LCD display.

- LCD readouts include odometer, dual trip meter, traction control modes, gear position, coolant and ambient temperature, fuel consumption, fuel gauge, and clock. Switching between readings can be done with the left handlebar switch.

- LED indicators include an ABS alert and a freeze warning icon, which together with the air temperature display warn of possible icy road conditions.

- The stacked, 65/55-watt halogen headlamps illuminate the road when riding at night.

- The LED tail and brake lights are bright and vibration resistant. The turn signals use bright amber incandescent bulbs with clear lenses.

- A handy 12-volt DC outlet is mounted on the inner dash.

- Genuine Suzuki Accessories include side and top cases, engine guards, low- and high-profile seats, heated grips, hand guards, and more.

* The Traction Control System is not a substitute for the rider's throttle control, and traction control cannot prevent loss of traction due to excessive speed when entering turns, or while braking, and it does not control front wheel traction.

SUZUKI V-STROM 800RE (2024 - on) Review

Suzuki V-Strom RE main image review

  • Road-biased version of the V-Strom 800
  • Less toys, lower price
  • Easier, more fun on the road

At a glance

Overall rating.

Suzuki’s middleweight V-Stroms have always been the best of their cross-over/ adventure bike offerings. The V-Strom 650 is an unglamourous yet quietly popular bike thanks to a keen price, good manners in all weathers and 100,000-mile dependability. You can ride it just about anywhere, everyday, and all it’ll need is basic servicing (and a good wash to look after the finish).

2023 saw the introduction of the all-new V-Strom 800DE alongside the venerable 650, rather than replacing it. The 800DE is a true adventure bike, with a 21” front wheel, long-travel suspension, off-road riding modes and high-quality suspension that will handle a proper off-road ride, whereas the DL650 was more of a road bike with capability for gentler unpaved road and forest tracks, rather than deep mud or sand. It can probably be done, but it wouldn’t be your first option…

2024’s V-Strom 800 RE bridges the gaps between the two, sharing the core of the 800DE but swapping the long, fully-adjustable suspension for more basic Showa components with a 70mm reduction in wheel travel at either end, and the front wheel has shrunk to 19” as well as switching from wire-spoke to a cast rim with a subtle dog-leg pattern. Tyres are tubeless on the RE, reducing hassle and expense at tyre changes.

cruise control v strom 650

It’s not all ‘downgrades’ though, as the 310mm discs up front are now pinched by a pair of radial four-piston Tokico calipers, rather than the sliding two-pots on the DE. The shorter suspension and wheel swap has also chopped the 800DE’s lofty 855mm seat height by 30mm (to 825mm), so it’s more accessible to riders that don’t have legs like Peter Crouch. And a significant 7kg (15lbs) saving, partly due to the removal of the bolt-on lower cradle that carries the DE’s sump guard, only helps manageability and general performance.

There’s also minor styling tweaks to make it less ‘Dakar’ and more ‘daily ride’, the handlebars are closer and narrower for comfort, and the footpegs are aluminium with larger rubber toppers instead of steel, trading dirt-bike resilience for reduced transmission of vibration. They’re fractionally higher, and further back too. The screen is larger, though handguards are an option instead of standard, as on the 800DE. The seat is subtly reshaped to suit the new riding position.

Nothing earth-shaking, but it’s a markedly different experience to the V-Strom 800 DE – for the better, as a road bike. It almost feels like a roomier, more protected version of the Suzuki GSX-8S than a DE with bits taken away.

Suzuki V-Strom RE

The adventure bike riding dynamic is always a compromise on the road – long travel suspension and a big front wheel makes for slower steering and less feel, particularly at lower speeds. The RE has a much more natural rate of turn and greater communication from the tyres, and switching trail-friendly brakes for road-worthy stoppers makes a big difference to confidence, too.

The riding position and larger screen enhances its everyday practicality and touring potential, but the street-biased chassis coupled with that weight loss makes it more entertaining, too. It’ll dive into low speed corners with gusto, taking advantage of the height and leverage afforded by the riding position but with enough feedback to be confident it will stick and hold a line.

The 776cc motor is as peachy as it is in the other models – modest peak outputs aren’t the whole picture. Strong punch from 4000-8000rpm and faux V-twin character from its 270° crankshaft make it potent and pleasurable in equal measure. It’ll sustain a higher gear than you might think, and the instant pick-up makes overtakes easy.

It’s hard to pick major fault with the bike, but it does have some limitations imposed by its price and position in the range. Cruise control is still deemed too pricey for bikes at this level, and the screen’s position can only be adjusted by unbolting it and refixing in a different position. That said, the screen is larger, though handguards are an option instead of standard, as on the 800DE. The seat is subtly reshaped to suit the new riding position.

The rear shock’s remote preload is useful, but our test bike had been wound to maximum when we went to make an adjustment. The spring’s support was fine for solo riding (with an 83kg rider), but there would be nothing left in reserve to compensate for pillion and/or luggage load, so it might flounder a little when you load it up.

Those points aside, there’s much to recommend it as a useful, easy-going yet entertaining everyday bike.

Ride quality & brakes

Most riders won’t feel the less-adjustable suspension is a downgrade, as the Showa separate-function, big-piston forks manage the neat trick of being cheap to assemble, yet offer plush damping and good control. The Showa shock offers a respectable balance of ride quality and support for spirited riding – it isn’t perfect and pronounced bumps and holes still jolt a touch, but that’s to be expected: this isn’t a premium bike with electronic semi-active suspension to react to every situation.

150mm of travel is around 20-30mm more than your typical road bike, so it still retains some of the ability to deal with rough surfaces without running out of travel, but it also doesn’t pitch back and forth, floating through its stroke like long-travel adventure bikes often do, so there’s good communication and feel from either of the specifically-designed Dunlop tyres. We found grip and feel levels to be acceptable on the launch, but that was on dry, grippy roads in the south of France. We’ll see how they fair on the UK’s neglected roads, and its inclement weather.

Handling is notably better than the DE on the road, with less effort required and greater accuracy. It’s sprightlier and more engaging than the V-Strom 650 too, and is almost like a (very) soft Supermoto if you really push it. Weight transfer to the front in particular is very good for a tall bike – loading the front tyre to gain confidence that it’s gripping as you’d hope doesn’t require you to compress inches of fork travel before that feedback comes, and opening the throttle out of bends doesn’t cause excessive squat from the rear, so it holds a line well. It proved 100% stable, no matter the combination of speed, lean and bumps, including some spirited riding following Suzuki’s guide rider, in a manner well beyond the design brief, and expectations of the target audience… Rest assured it has plenty of scope for weekend fun on the twisties as well as its more practical skills.

The Nissin brakes are leagues ahead of its 800 and 650 brethren, with all the power and good feel at your finger tips. The rear brake has the right sort of progressive feel and power to be useful for low speed control. The ABS is a very basic system, relying on wheel speed info alone to decide when to intervene. It only gets flustered if you combine a death-grip on the lever, with high speed, and very bumpy or rutted surfaces, when it can’t keep up. Intervention is a rare occurrence in most conditions, thanks partly to the suspension performance. Many budget bikes tend to have softly-sprung, underdamped forks which plummet through their travel on the brakes, and overwhelm the front tyre: the Suzuki’s above-average mechanical grip means it doesn’t need fancy electronics to sort it out.

The same is true for the traction control – it’ll do the job on dirty or wet roads, but turn it down to minimum (or off) and it doesn’t interfere in your riding.

The 776cc parallel-twin powering the V-Strom 800 siblings (and the GSX-8S cousin) exceeds the modest promise the figures make on paper. Chunky midrange (the 57ftlb peak is at just 6800rpm) over rev-chasing horsepower suits the middleweight trio down to the ground, feeling like a much more powerful bike, though drive tails off at 8000rpm and above 85mph. For the V-Strom duo in particular, it’s rarely a problem.

It's friendly from the first touch of the throttle at low rpm on the ‘B’ engine mode, which has a progressive torque delivery. There is a C-mode with super-soft response (though it still delivers the same peak power/torque figures), but it really isn’t necessary, unless you get caught in the snow, perhaps… Even A-mode, which cracks on with delivering the best of the motor’s throttle response early, isn’t spiky so can be used all the time by more experienced riders with finely-honed throttle control, and it’s the one everyone should choose at A-road or motorway speed, or for having fun on a mountain pass…

Overtaking and filtering is easier than it often is on rival like the Honda Transalp and the 790 KTM/CFMoto options, which tend to require more use of the gearbox and higher rpm to deliver their best. Town riding is a roll-on, roll-off affair for the most part, effortlessly picking off traffic and making gaps. It’s also not prone to emitting excessive heat over the rider when going gets slow in heavy congestion. Out of town, theres’s no need to wait for huge gaps, as it easily picks up a speed differential without a run-up to see you past cars and trucks.

80mph is the realistic limit for cruising, as vibrations become more noticeable over the 6000rpm required to hold that kind of speed. It’s better than the DE in this regard – alloy footpegs with different rubber tops transmit fewer high-frequency tingles to your toes than the DE’s steel pegs (which are necessary for resilience on the trail). They’re still there though: if you want to tear along European autoroutes, you might find it a bit lacking, but for slightly more relaxed tours, it’ll be just fine.

An up/down quickshifter is standard and works well, though the transmission does require a firm prod on the lever to shift. It’s not uncomfortable or clunky, but it does take more effort to select ratios in either direction, than it would with the buttery-smooth gearboxes that Suzuki was once known for.

Suzuki V-Strom RE engine

We weren’t able to test economy on the press launch, but we’ve seen over 60mpg from the other models using the same engine: relentless hard riding might push that down to mid-40s, but with a 20 litre tank the V-Strom 800 RE should still get around 200 miles between fill-ups even at that speed – nearer 250 miles is likely to be typical in reality.

Reliability & build quality

Reliability is not yet assured, given the platform is so new, but we’ve yet to hear of mechanical or electrical issues from owners of either the V-Strom 800DE or the GSX-8S, which bodes well for the 800RE. It’s a low-ish revving bike that’s not tuned to the hilt, and Suzuki rarely built fragile motors, so we’ve no reservations on that side of thing.

They’re also screwed together well, so bits dropping off or failing isn’t on the cards either. Paint and plated finishes are a historical Suzuki bugbear – the 800 family are all-new though, so fingers crossed they’ve increased their resilience to water and road salt. SOur long-term test GSX-8S is faring well at the time of writing, but the UK is approaching winter, and road salt season. The story may be different after that…

Value vs rivals

£9699 is considered good value these days, and is identical to the Honda XL750 Transalp ’s asking price. The Honda retains a 21” front wheel and the appearance of off-road ability, but the sump, headers and oil filters are extremely exposed, so taking it too far away from the tarmac would be foolhardy. The dynamics are more road-oriented too, so the RE is realistically a closer rival than the DE. We pit these two bikes against one another AND the Triumph Tiger 850 Sport in our road-going middleweight adventure bike group test .

KTM’s 790 Adventure has shaken this sector up, bringing specification and features (94bhp, higher quality suspension and the scope for more sophisticated electronic options) from more expensive bikes to this more entry-level middleweight adventure/all-rounder class, thanks to production shifting to China for this model. The KTM is more dirt-focused though, and we have our doubts over the firm’s reliability in general, in their Austrian-built bikes as well as those outsourced to countries with a lower cost of labour…

Triumph’s Tiger 850 Sport is often overlooked, but is a great road-oriented, reduced-cost version of the superb Tiger 900 family . It costs a little more, though has a slightly higher spec to match. All things considered, the Suzuki fits the market well, and we’d expect the OTR price to be disregarded once the initial orders are fulfilled: Suzuki dealers are notorious for openly offering discounts, or deals on extras to make them more tempting. Panniers, heated grips and handguards would be the most desirable, in our opinion.

Servicing, tyres and fuel economy will be low, so it’s worth serious consideration for the commuters who are looking for a long-term commitment, expecting to put many tens of thousands of miles on with minimum fuss and outlay – a role the V-Strom 650 performs admirably, albeit with less of the sparkle of the 800.

The Suzuki is fitted with an appropriate level of spec and features for the price. It’s not let down in any area, but it’s not fitted with anything you’d consider premium or cutting edge either. It’s honest kit built to do the job and keep the price low. Bluetooth connectivity is the one thing you might consider an omission compared to the Honda Transalp, but smartphones/headsets don’t always warrant that extra connection anyway, so it’s not a critical issue.

Suzuki V-Strom RE dashboard

There’s a strong genuine accessory offering and the broad similarity to the 800DE means existing aftermarket parts will also fit. The best of Suzuki’s own upgrades include luggage (chunky aluminium adventure boxes, or slightly smaller plastic panniers that tuck tighter to the bike for greater traffic-busting manoeuvrability), handguards, a centrestand and heated grips. There’s also RE-specific higher and lower seat options (reducing it by 20mm to 805mm, or raising it 30mm to 855mm), plus fog lights, the lower cradle/sump guard as seen on the 800DE and a taller screen.

2022 Suzuki V-Strom 650 Totalmotorcycle.com Key Features

Coated in Pearl Brilliant White paint, the effective fairing with vertically stacked headlights, adjustable windshield, and iconic Suzuki DR-Big styling adds true adventure style and real-world function.

Liquid-cooled, 645cc, 90-degree, V-twin engine delivers strong torque in the low- to mid-rpm range, yet provides a strong rush of high-rpm power that’s ideal for any riding mission.

Suzuki’s Advanced Traction Control System*, Easy Start System, Low RPM Assist feature, plus ABS** technology make a great motorcycle really incredible.

Multifunction, illumination-adjustable instrument panel brings a wealth of information to the rider in a concise manner and helps when setting rider-assist features.

Strong and lightweight chassis has integrated mount points for unified Suzuki V-Strom luggage that’s easy to clip on and off and keeps the motorcycle trim when ready for touring.

*The Traction Control System is not a substitute for the rider’s throttle control. It cannot prevent loss of traction due to excessive speed when the rider enters a turn and/or applies the brakes. Neither can it prevent the front wheel from losing grip.

**Depending on road surface conditions, such as wet, loose, or uneven roads, braking distance for an ABS-equipped vehicle may be longer than for a vehicle not equipped with ABS. ABS cannot prevent wheel skidding caused by braking while cornering. Please ride carefully and do not overly rely on ABS.

ADVANCED TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM Inheriting the favoured traction control system from the V-Strom 1000, the V-Strom 650/XT also is equipped with this advanced technology. This system continuously monitors the front and rear wheel speeds, throttle position, crank position, and gear position with various sensors, and controls the engine output by managing the ignition timing and air delivery. The traction control system can be switched to either of two modes, or off. The modes differ in terms of sensitivity. Mode one allows modest rear wheel spin for more advanced, exhilarating riding, while mode two activates traction control at the slightest loss of rear-wheel grip to give you greater confidence on slippery surfaces or in the rain. The choice of modes can be quickly and easily made by selecting the traction control mode from the left switch cluster and confirming it with a glance at the instruments. In difficult riding situations such as cold or ragged road surfaces, fully loaded with luggage, or with a pillion rider, this advanced system already established on the V-Strom 1000 shall back up the ride.

Note: Traction control system is not a substitute for rider’s throttle control under the various conditions, and traction control cannot prevent loss of traction due to excessive speed when entering turns, or while braking, and it does not control front wheel traction.

RICH INFORMATION TO SUPPORT MULTIPLE TASKS By sharing the easy to see and easy to operate/understand instrument cluster, along with the cowling image with its bigger brother, the V-STROM 650 has rich information with a quality design. The instrument cluster incorporates a large analogue tachometer and digital readouts for the gear position and speedometer. The digital section below displays the odometer, twin-trip meter, clock, fuel level, coolant temperature, ambient temperature, battery voltage, range on remaining fuel, average and instantaneous fuel consumptions, and traction-control modes. The remaining fuel range continues to display after the fuel gauge shows empty, offering the rider with accurate and comforting information. Plus, instantly recognizable LEDs provide freeze*, high-beam, neutral, malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), ABS, traction-control mode, and water-temperature indicators. All of this information is accessible from the left handlebar switch, where it is also possible to reset the trip meter.

*The freeze indicator starts blinking when the ambient temperature falls below 3°C. It continues to blink for 30 seconds then remains lit until the ambient temperature rises above 5°C.

ABS-EQUIPPED BRAKE SYSTEM Equipped with 310mm diameter twin discs with twin two-piston callipers on the front and a 260mm diameter single disk with a single-piston calliper on the rear, the V-STROM 650 provides controllable and dependable stopping performance. Also, the compact and light-weight ABS, to avoid wheel lock caused by excess hard braking, has been upgraded to the next generation with advanced settings for a further natural feel and secure activation. Note: ABS is not designed to shorten the braking distance. ABS cannot prevent wheel skidding caused by braking while cornering. Please drive carefully and do not overly rely on ABS.

LOW RPM ASSIST By adopting the Low RPM assist system, the concern of an unexpected engine stall has been relieved. This system will automatically raise the idle speed when engaging the clutch or when riding at low rpms, assisting frequent clutch work in congested town rides and preventing sudden and unexpected engine stall when running in the low rpm range.

SUZUKI EASY START SYSTEM Conventional starter switches needed to be pressed by the rider until the engine starts, but the V-STROM 650 has adopted the Suzuki Easy Start System enabling the engine to start with one push of the button. A computerized ECM checks the status and disengages the starter motor immediately after start, making the engine start easier for the rider.

SOPHISTICATED V-TWIN PERFORMANCE The 645cm 3 DOHC V-twin is a masterpiece of Suzuki engineering which has an evolving history. For the V-STROM 650, this unit has been tuned for ample low to mid-range torque for practical use while maintaining an exhilarating top-end. The unit meeting emission standards has undergone a rebuild, installing technology such as the resin-coated pistons, and revising over 60 components of the engine to achieve a higher output in a broad area of the rev-range while keeping the unique V-twin character with low fuel consumption. With low fuel consumption combined with the large 20L fuel tank, the riding rage between fill-ups are at the top in this class, relieving the rider from the stress of frequent refuelling. The further evolved engine has succeeded in emphasizing the attractions of the V-STROM 650 character, making it another masterpiece by Suzuki.

SUZUKI DUAL THROTTLE VALVE (SDTV) FUEL-INJECTION SYSTEM Featuring the performance-proven Suzuki Dual Throttle Valve (SDTV) injection system, each cylinder has two butterfly valves for enhanced power output and efficiency. One butterfly valve is directly linked to the riders throttle control while the other butterfly valve is controlled by the ECM and operates according to information from the throttle position sensor, engine speed sensor and gear position sensor for optimum intake flow, realizing an efficient and smooth power delivery with ample torque at low revs. Idle speed control is also a feature, supporting a steady idle speed and fewer emission. The injectors have been upgraded to a 10-hole type with a long nozzle for further efficiency.

RESIN COATED PISTONS One of the upgraded features in the 645cm3 unit are the resin-coated pistons which is a coating technology to decrease friction in the cylinder, resulting in improved fuel economy and corresponding to latest emission control. Special L-shaped piston rings are also installed for enhanced sealing performance and blow-by gas reduction, all resulting in meeting up-to-date regulations while improving the output and the ease of use.

CAMSHAFTS FOR A DISTINCTIVE POWER FEEL For the unique character of the V-STROM 650, the engine needs to be strong not only at the top end but at the frequently used low to mid-range. To meet these demands, the engine has an original intake camshaft with equally lengthened intake ports, while for the exhaust camshaft, has adopted the item from the SV650 road model which are higher lifting compared to the previous V-STROM 650. These features and a total set-up has resulted in a boost in torque and power in the mid to high rev-range, providing the rider with an exciting ride when with a sporty mind, and a stress-free character for daily rides or on a long haul, simply enhancing the attractions of this 650.

LIGHTER AND LOWER EXHAUST SYSTEM The down-type exhaust system is lighter and closer to the center of gravity, contributing to nimble handling while being able to accommodate the slim and smart optional luggage system.

The catalyzers have been positioned in a tandem configuration achieving the required level of emission control for Euro4 emission standards, while successfully gaining exhaust efficiency to boost the output.

*The ABS is a supplemental device for brake operation, not a device for shortening stopping distance. Always remember to reduce speed sufficiently before approaching curves.

  • Pearl Brilliant White

Key Features

Ready for real adventure, the V-Strom 650XT has new Pearl Brilliant White bodywork with gold-anodized aluminum rims on the spoke-style wheels with tubeless radial dual-sport tires, hand guards, and a protective lower engine cowl.

Liquid-cooled, 645cc, 90-degree, V-twin engine delivers strong torque in the low- to mid-rpm range yet provides a strong rush of high-rpm power that’s ideal for any riding mission.

Suzuki’s Advanced Traction Control System*, Easy Start System, Low RPM Assist feature, plus ABS** technology make a great motorcycle incredible.

ADV fairing, with vertically stacked headlights and adjustable windshield, houses a multifunction, illumination-adjustable instrument panel that delivers a wealth of information.

The strong and light chassis has integrated mount points for unified Suzuki V-Strom luggage that's easy to clip on and off and keeps the motorcycle trim when ready for touring.

*The Traction Control System is not a substitute for the rider's throttle control.

Engine Features

Using SV650 engineering, the V-Strom 650XT’s DOHC, liquid-cooled engine has been tuned to deliver clean, strong power at any rpm.

Low-friction resin-coated pistons and SCEM-coated cylinders help deliver high mileage for class-leading touring range.

Unique engine cover hardware and select fasteners are designed to permit the use of Torx or conventional hex-style tools.

The sleek 2-into-1 exhaust system routes below the chassis to reduce weight, centralize mass, and provide space for a narrow tail section (and optional luggage).

The exhaust system has twin catalyzers and employs O2 feedback to the EFI system to produce optimum combustion efficiency and reduce emissions to an incredibly low level.

The fuel-injection system employs Suzuki’s innovative SDTV (Suzuki Dual Throttle Valve) on 39mm throttle bodies. The secondary throttle valves are controlled by a servo motor for smooth power delivery.

Ten-hole, long-nose-type fuel injectors on each throttle body improve fuel atomization for better combustion efficiency while reducing fuel consumption.

Suzuki’s patented Throttle-body Integrated Idle Speed Control (TI-ISC) stabilizes the engine idle speed and helps lower emissions. The system is compact and lightweight.

The TI-ISC on the V-Strom 650XT has Suzuki’s Low RPM Assist feature that seamlessly adjusts engine speed during takeoff and low-speed riding to smooth the power delivery. It also helps reduce the possibility of the rider stalling the motorcycle.

The Engine Control Module (ECM) provides state-of-the-art engine management and has enhanced settings to suit the updated intake and exhaust systems, resulting in better fuel economy and linear throttle response.

The engine has dual spark technology heads with two high-energy, slim electrode spark plugs per cylinder, which aid in combustion efficiency and power production.

The V-Strom 650XT is equipped with Suzuki’s Advanced Traction Control System*, which lets the rider control the throttle with more confidence in various riding conditions. It continuously monitors front and rear wheel speeds, throttle opening, engine speed, and the selected transmission gear to adjust engine output if wheel spin is detected.

There are three traction control modes (1, 2, and OFF), and the difference between the modes is their sensitivity to road conditions. Mode 1 is lowest sensitivity level, most suitable for skilled riders or in conditions that have good road surface grip (riding on good, smooth roads). Mode 2 is highest sensitivity level, suitable for road conditions where the grip may be limited (wet or cold surfaces). OFF disengages all traction control features.

This V-Strom also features the Suzuki Easy Start System, which lets the rider start the motorcycle with a momentary press of the start button without pulling in the clutch lever when the transmission is in neutral.

The compact radiator is flanked by wind-directing plates that enhance cooling efficiency and direct heat out of the side vents away from the rider’s legs.

The six-speed transmission suits sporty rides with tight first through fifth gear ratios and a tall top gear (sixth gear) for highway cruising.

Low-maintenance, long-life sealed O-ring drive chain is standard.

Chassis Features

The beak-style fairing, with vertically stacked headlights and new mounting structure, helps the V-Strom 650XT cut through the wind, protecting the rider in style.

The three-way height-adjustable windscreen was wind-tunnel tested to reduce wind sounds, buffeting, and rider fatigue.

The fuel tank has a generous 5.3-gallon capacity but is shaped to be thin at the rear to flow into the slimmer seat, which aids the rider in touching the ground at stops.

The internal construction and cap of the fuel tank is updated so the gasoline capacity is the same for both the 49-state and California versions.

The spacious two-up seat combines smooth and slip-resistant surfaces, plus an embossed V-Strom logo.

Lightweight, rigid twin-spar aluminum frame and swingarm contribute to smooth handling performance and excellent stability.

Spring-preload-adjustable 43mm front forks and link-type rear suspension are combined with a rebound damping adjustment and hand-operated spring preload adjuster.

Spoke-style wheels, with blue anodized aluminum rims laced with stainless steel spokes, absorb shock from irregular road surfaces well and accept tubeless tires.

Adventure-spec Bridgestone Battlax 19-inch front and 17-inch rear tubeless radial tires are mounted to the spoke-style wheels for all-around good performance.

Front dual 310mm disc brakes and a rear 260mm disc brake deliver controlled stopping power.

Compact Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)** monitors wheel speed to match braking to available traction.

The lightweight resin luggage rack incorporates easy-to-grasp grab bars and aligns with the passenger section of the seat, offering a larger surface for carrying cargo or luggage.

The V-Strom 650XT comes with hand guards and a protective lower engine cowl.

Electrical Features

The multifunction instrument panel features brightness-adjustable LED backlighting for its large diameter analog tachometer, digital speedometer, and LCD data display.

LCD readouts include odometer, dual trip meter, traction control modes, gear position, coolant and ambient temperature, fuel consumption, fuel gauge, and clock. Switching between readings can be done with the left handlebar switch.

LED indicators include an ABS alert and a freeze warning icon, which together with the air temperature display warn of possible icy road conditions.

Strong three-phase charging system supplies the 10Ah maintenance-free battery for easy starting and additional accessory power. A dedicated accessory fuse is located under the seat.

The stacked, 65/55-watt halogen headlamps illuminate the road when your ride stretches into night.

The LED tail and brake light is bright and vibration resistant. The turn signals use bright amber incandescent bulbs with clear lenses.

A handy 12-volt DC accessory outlet is mounted on the inner dash.

Additional Features

  • The 2023 V-Strom 650XT is supplied with three lock cylinders that match the motorcycle’s ignition key so if you get Suzuki accessory plastic side or top cases you can enjoy one-key operation.
  • The Suzuki accessory aluminum panniers and top cases have a sturdy lock and latch system that use a different style key that does not match the motorcycle’s ignition key.
  • See the Suzuki Genuine Accessory catalog for information related to luggage setup on the V-Strom 650XT.

10 Reasons Why We Love The Suzuki V-Strom 650XT

T he Suzuki V-Strom 650 has always continued the brand’s legacy and tradition of being over-engineered, comfortable, and balanced. Still, the last major update this line saw was in 2017 when it was released in its third-generation avatar. Over the years, this third-generation V-Strom 650 has seen minor updates, and even modern electronics have joined the party.

One such update was the launch of its 650XT variant , loaded with off-road features that made it a more adventure-oriented bike than the standard V-Strom 650. The Suzuki V-Strom 650XT is still a logical motorcycle if you want a Suzuki ADV that can handle rough roads, not just wide-open tarmac. But is the bike any better than its competitors? We think it is. The 650XT is the most versatile V-Strom line approach and offers function unlike any other in the segment. Here are ten reasons why we love the V-Strom 650XT and why you should consider this bike.

From Commutes To Off-Road Adventures

The V-Strom 650XT is perhaps the most versatile Suzuki you can buy at the moment. For starters, the 650XT is an excellent commuter since it is comfortable, easy to handle in the urban jungle, and comes with various comfort features like idle speed control and low RPM assist. For the main course, the 650XT still retains the tourer essence of the standard 650 with its thin, agile chassis, a saddle that won’t change the shape of your butt after a couple of hours, and some creature comforts like the three-way height-adjustable windshield. Even the 645cc V-twin engine can cruise at freeway speeds without breaking a sweat or losing its bolts.

The 650XT variant also offers desert in terms of off-roadability , thanks to its wire-spoked wheels with aluminum rims, tubeless tires, adjustable suspension, hand guards, and a lower engine cowl. It may not be as off-roadable as a Tenere 700, but for most bikers, the 650XT is more than enough to tackle the occasional dirt road on their multi-day tours.

Power Where You Need

The V-Strom 650XT has a 645cc V-twin engine that produces 70 horses and 46 pound-feet of torque, with a top speed of 125 mph. That’s more than enough for most adventures , but where this engine shines is how it delivers this power. The V-twin engine produces a strong dose of torque in the low to mid RPM range, which can help you filter lanes on your weekdays and overcome obstacles on weekends. And when you’re in the mood for some speed, the engine delivers a rush of power at the top end , too!

Comfort For The City And The Highways

Most people who purchase the Suzuki V-Strom are mile-munchers and want a comfortable motorcycle, no matter the conditions. And the 650XT stays true to this. For instance, you won’t feel any vibes on the pegs or the bars, the steering is neutral yet precise, and the engine feels so refined that you may question its character. Plus, you can always fine-tune the adjustable suspension to your liking! There’s a reason why Iron Butt enthusiasts often gravitate to this bike.

The Necessary Electronics

Let’s be honest, the Suzuki V-Strom 650XT is far from a tech-laden BMW, but you don’t really need all the tech. Instead, the 650XT takes a pragmatic approach with its electronic suite — it’s designed to be comfortable and reliable , not a wild beast that needs taming. So, the 650XT has gizmos that matter, like ABS, advanced traction control, idle speed control, and low RPM assist. These features make V-Strom 650XT a safe bike that’s super easy to live with.

You Will Forget About Fuel Stops

Another feature that even serious adventure bikes often miss out on is range, but the V-Strom 650XT does not. The bike has a generous 5.3-gallon fuel tank and a surprisingly fuel-efficient engine, which gives this bike a range of 260 miles between fill-ups. That’s a lot of range, and if you keep your wrist calm, you can even stretch the range up to 300 miles! This is one reason why the Suzuki V-Strom 650XT is among the best middleweight adventure tourers on the market.

Attractive Pricing For A Middleweight ADV

The V-Strom 650XT is a lot of things, but it is not expensive. It is one of the most accessible middleweight adventure bikes, with a price tag of only $9,599 . Of course, you will find some adventure bikes under this price range, but the V-Strom 650XT has carved a unique position for itself by being an incredibly versatile, capable motorcycle.

Quintessential Adventurous Looks

The V-Strom 650XT is an attractive bike; it looks bulky but, at the same time, is not overkill like the big GSs from BMW. It has a distinctive adventure fairing with the classic front beak and vertically stacked headlights. From the side, you’ll notice the wind-tunnel-tested windshield dropping onto the gentle hump of the fuel tank, followed by a graceful flyline. It’s hard to complain about the design — it is timeless.

Did You Say Accessories?

Adventure bikes are often clean slates for customizations; after all, you want the bike to be comfortable for you. Suzuki knows this since they have given the 650XT an accessories catalog that will even shame some Harley-Davidson baggers. The catalog includes add-ons like LED turn signals, LED fog lamps, aluminum chain guards, engine under cowling, heated grips, knuckle covers, mirror extensions, a lower seat, larger footrests, bags, and much more. And don’t worry; the bike is also designed to take on these accessories, so you don’t have to jerry-rig everything with zip ties. You can truly make this bike your own without voiding the warranty.

Stroms Past The Competition

The Suzuki V-Strom 650 may not be the most cutting-edge, the most capable, or the fastest middleweight adventure bike, but it sits in the sweet spot that many of its competitors can’t . For example, its closest rival, the Kawasaki Versys 650, is more road-biased and fails to be a capable off-roader. The Tenere 700 is a competent off-roader but good luck commuting on it. Even the Tiger Sport 660 lacks the flexibility that V-Strom 650XT offers. Yes, there’s the Tiger 850 that can beat the 650XT, but that’s also a lot more expensive.

The Mature Choice For A Mature Rider

We all know at least one experienced bike that has moved from a superbike to a “more manageable” middleweight because adrenaline is no longer their top priority. The Suzuki V-Strom 650XT is the perfect bike for such riders. It does lag behind its competitors in some regards, but it highlights the benefit of a gradual evolution of what works and what can be improved. The V-Strom 650 line is known for being reliable, low-cost and balanced , and the 650XT is no different. In the classic Suzuki sense, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
