Michigan Old U.S. 27 Motor Tour
August 19th-25th, 2024, join us on the 18th year of the tour, about the tour.
Every 3rd week of August we do a 13 City 6 day Motor Tour of Historic Old U.S.27 in Michigan.
We hope you can join us for this fun event…
Take your vacation in your Cruiser. Explore Historical Old U.S.27 in Michigan.
The Old U.S. 27 Motor Tour was the brainchild of one very remarkable man, Craig Parrish. Craig was born in Lansing, Michigan to a family deeply embedded in the car industry and his love and passion for automobiles grew from that family heritage at a very young age (at the age of 4 he could identify cars by their tail lights). In his teens, like most, he would drive his car to downtown Lansing and “Cruise the Gut”. Later in life, while reminiscing about how much fun they had on Friday nights “Cruisin the Gut”, he came up with the idea of restoring the cruise in the form of a car show during each summer months. He worked tirelessly with the City of Lansing and the downtown merchants to organize and host the Cruises during summer for ten years.
In the early 2000s, Craig had the idea to have Old U.S. 27 in Michigan become designated as a historic highway and went about making that happen. In 2010, that dream became a reality as the Michigan House of Representatives passed a resolution sponsored by Lansing Representative Joan Bauer to officially designate the route as a historic highway.
As part of the historic designation of U.S. 27, Craig had the vision to create a Motor Tour along the route from Coldwater to Cheboygan, like the Route 66 experience, driving a piece of US history. He went to communities along Old U.S. 27 to ask if they would be interested in having their town participate in a week long traveling car show with a police escort from one town to the next. He told them, “I will bring the cars and the people, you bring the party”.
The Tour began in 2006 and has evolved into a summer highlight in the State of Michigan for car enthusiasts as well as anyone looking to come out, view the amazing cars that come into town, and capture a bit of history.
Throughout the years, the Old U.S. 27 Motor Tour has helped to bring life to the small-town communities in Michigan as well as to bring people together to drive the old road, forge strong friendships and have fun together.
We are forever thankful too Craig for his vision and his passion. Craig lost his battle with cancer on July 29, 2021, but his dream lives on.
We want to thank our brave officers in blue who help to make this event safe and enjoyable!

Don't miss the Skagway Street Car for a complete understanding of the city and its colorful century of history. This is your chance to experience Skagway with Alaska's original historical city tour to 'All Points of Interest' -- an informative and fun-filled 90 minutes.
Skagway character Martin Itjen came north looking for Klondike gold in 1898 and instead became the town's most celebrated storyteller. The first passenger Martin took on his Skagway Street Car tour was US President Warren G. Harding. Back then, in 1923, he claimed that there was "nothing like it in the world." He went on to delight visitors with his motorized sightseeing tour and tall tales for many decades. Today, Martin's tour lives on in Skagway.
You'll board a yellow 1927 sightseeing bus with a costumed driver and sit back and relax as your conductor passes on a century of history, behind-the-scenes tales, and stories of life in small-town Alaska.
Explore the waterfront and National Park Historic District, enjoy the panoramic views from the scenic overlook, and have your camera ready for the re-telling of Soapy Smith's gunfight at the Gold Rush Cemetery. To capture the history of this gold rush town and the pioneer families that built it, you will motor through the residential neighborhoods of Skagway, famous for their flower gardens, and pass the early-childhood home of Alaska's former Governor, Sarah Palin.
Guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so but must make their own way back to the ship.
The award-winning Skagway Street Car excursion is an old-fashioned city tour and combines well with a second excursion. Ideal for guests with mobility limitations. Wheelchairs and scooters cannot be accommodated on the vintage street cars; participants must be able to climb three steps to (dis)embark the bus.

Richelle is an awesome tour guide! She knows all the history and presents it in a very entertaining way. We saw all the points of interest in and around Skagway. Thanks Richelle!
The Skagway Streetcar tour is a great option to get out and see the highlight of the town, especially if you have some mobility challenges (i.e. you are able to step up via a step stool into the bus) Highlights: + 90 minutes, with multiple time slots to chose from, so this allows you the option to do more than this if you happen to only be visiting for the day +Ticketing is primarily done via cruise ships; however, you can contact the company directly to book if not on a cruise. + Tour is primarily a drive through the town and narration/storytelling is provided by your guide as you go. Two stops are briefly made, outside town that provides a nice overlook of Skagway and at the other at the Gold Rush Cemetery where you get to visit the grave site of the one an only Soapy Smith. Tips: - Watch out for the seats over the wheels as the hump will take away much valuable leg room if your on the taller side - Use the facilities prior to the tour. Though at about the halfway mark at the overlook, there is a public toilet there; however, it will eat into you time to look at the view as there usually is a line
My husband and 19 year old daughter went on this tour as an excursion from our cruise ship. It was amazing, thanks to our guide, Kylie. She was our tour guide, bus driver, and storyteller, and was a total professional! She managed to weave the historical tale of Skagway with the town of today seamlessly, all while driving the antique streetcar, and chatting us up as if she was our friend or some folksy Hal Holbrook. At one point, she sang her version of Home on the Range while backing up the trolley car and parking it. I've never seen anyone perform any better than she did that morning. Seriously. Totally believable. I highly recommend the tour and Kylie as your guide.
We rode a train in Skagway, took a duck tour in Ketchikan, a bus tour in Victoria, and a helicopter tour in Juneau. Of all the excursions our family votes this as the best shore excursion of the entire cruise. Our driver / tour guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. We loved her well-timed stories and learned a lot about the history of Skagway and the gold rush at the same time. I'm sorry I don't have her name, she was brilliant. Honestly there's not much going on in Skagway but you wouldn't know it as due to her animated stories the history came alive everywhere we went. Five stars all the way!
We were on the first cruise ship back in Alaska for the 2022 season (NCL Norwegian Bliss, April 23-30). My husband and I like to learn about the places we visit, so we booked this tour. First off, the streetcars are SO NEAT!! They're impossible to miss, being bright yellow. The engine starts quick and feels sturdy, too, so you don't feel like you're going to break down in the middle of the tour. Anna was our tour guide. She was absolutely marvelous. Her humor shone through during her stories, and the history she gave was rich! The Goldrush Cemetery was a deeply moving site, and the views from the lookout were incredible. I would love to visit and do the streetcars again. They were entertaining, beautiful, and richly historical. Fantastic tour, would DEFINITELY recommend.
Skagway Streetcar in front of the White Pass Railway
The highlight of our cruise! Anna is wonderful! We are so happy we chose this excursion. I have mobility issues and the woman at the pier arranged for the bus to come right to the place where we were waiting. It was difficult for me to get on and off the streetcar, so I remained seated at the stops where folks got off. Even so, I had a terrific time. We loved Anna's performance and genuine wishes for us at the close of the tour. Thank you very much!
Alex was so much fun driving the streetcar in Skagway and telling us the stories with plenty of funny stories and interesting history
Alex was so very entertaining, driving the streetcar and telling the story of Skagway with plenty of funny jokes and lots of enthusiasm.
We booked the Original Skagway Streetcar specifically because we wanted something low-key without much walking.... turned out to be a real highlight of our cruise vacation. The beautifully restored buses are roomy & reasonably comfortable, even for big people. (There is a step up, so maybe not suitable for wheelchairs or people with severe mobility issues.) We had three buses in our little group. The costumed drivers keep up a running narrative during the tour, and then tag-team each other's stories when everybody gets off the bus at the various points of interest (the Gold Rush-era cemetery & the outlook point.) Their account of the gunfight between Soapy Smith & Frank Reid is worth the price of admission! At the end of the 90 minute tour, they'll either drop you in town for some strolling & shopping, or else take you back to the docks. Recommended for all ages.
Our conductor tells about the demise of the notorious Soapy Smith.
Booked this tour as an excursion from a RCL cruise. The tour is conducted on "Resto-mod" 1927 buses restored by the late Boyd Carrington. Our tour guide, Kylie, was very informative and hilarious at the same time. She provided an energetic narrative on life and history in Skagway from Moore's settlement to current days. We really enjoyed this tour and highly recommend it.
We booked our tour through Celebrity cruise during our Alaskan vacation. Our excursion was based on the fact that we were traveling with a 9-month old infant. If any of you have kids, you understand our predicament. Tour: 90 minutes, majority is spent in the vintage bus. The tour is also operator dependent, and I thought our tour operator was fantastic. During the tour, you get details on the history of Skagway, tourism in Skagway, city facts, and the gold rush history of Skagway. One of the highlights is the cemetery in Skagway where some infamous peole are buried. If you are looking for fun and low key excursion in Skagway, this tour is for you. Some people even booked this as a 2nd excursion as 90 minutes give you plenty of time to shop or go on another excursion. Overall, I liked this tour and felt it was money well spent.

Electric Boats Are Coming Sooner Than You Think
From buenos aires to belfast to bangkok, newly electrified ferries and tour boats (and even a few cruise ships) are changing the way we set sail..

As the broader transportation sector looks to meet pressing decarbonization goals via the pursuit of greener alternative energy, the maritime industry has been no exception. And with on-tap battery-electric technology that’s already proven successful on land, a new breed of electric boats and ships is likewise emerging. For travelers, this move to EV technology is of particular interest as the first wave of global commuter ferries and tour boats goes electric in cities like San Francisco, Stockholm, Lisbon, and others.
“I see electrification as being impactful for short routes and smaller vessels,” explains Elise Sturrup, a marine researcher at the nonprofit International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT). She notes that smaller “harbor craft”—like ferries, tugs, and other service vessels—which cover shorter spans and regularly frequent ports like New York City or Oslo (affording ongoing access to charging points) are particularly well-suited to the technology. Plus, she says, ship electrification reduces air pollution and its devastating health effects on those living and working in portside communities (an issue that’s been particularly problematic in heavily trafficked ports like Barcelona and Rome ).
Electric motors also reduce pollutants into sensitive waterways and eliminate the risk of oil spills. Plus, they provide a smoother, fume-free, and virtually noise-free ride, which is an upgraded experience for guests and crews aboard. In addition, the quietness is “extremely beneficial for sound-dependent marine fauna like whales,” says Sturrup, of heightened importance in ports serving both whale- and ship-heavy seas, such as in Alaska or New England.
However, larger and heavier mega-cruise ships (as well as freight vessels) that travel longer distances have proven stubbornly difficult to electrify—due largely to the limitations of existing battery technology. “We won’t see cross-ocean ships using pure electrification any time soon,” she says, noting that the high-energy-density battery options needed don’t yet exist. Still, some pioneering cruise ship companies, like Hurtigruten and Ponant, are finding ways to incorporate electric power in a hybrid capacity.
What seems certain is that the market for electric vessels, bolstered by demand from both commercial operators and recreational boaters, is projected for rapid growth. One market research firm found that the electric ship market value will jump by nearly 400 percent in the next 10 years, reaching a valuation of $31.48 billion by 2034 .
“Electrification is essential for transitioning maritime, as well as all transportation,” says Dr. Mark Jacobson, director of the Atmosphere/Energy Program at Stanford University and author of No Miracles Needed: How Today’s Technology Can Save Our Climate and Clean Our Air . “Going forward, this will be the mode of transportation, no doubt,” he says. “Fossil fuels are on their way out.”

Electric ferries and tour boats to watch
Ferries offer the sweet spot for maritime electrification: smaller boats, shorter distances to cover, along with the route regularity needed to accommodate in-port charging. Europe currently dominates the e-ferry landscape, with recently launched or soon-to-launch e-ferries spanning cities from Belfast to Lisbon and beyond. But it’s Scandinavia—which has also been the global leader for adopting electric automobiles—that’s the clear front-runner.
Norway is particularly prolific, with dozens of fully electric ferries in operation, including the sleek 50-passenger “smart city” ferries in the city of Fredrikstad from newcomer Hyke ; the decade-old, 350-passenger innovator, MF Ampere, which services villages along the Sognefjord; and the world’s largest all-electric passenger and car ferry—the 600-passenger Bastø Electric, which makes runs across Norway’s busiest ferry crossing, the Olso fjord.
But perhaps most notable is Swedish company Candela , which debuted its 30-passenger Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil commuter ferry in Stockholm last summer; the company has since inked deals to launch high-speed ferries in New Zealand and Berlin. Billed as the “world’s fastest electric ferries,” the boats can reach speeds of up to 35 mph.
Candela’s spokesperson Mikael Mahlberg explains that challenges have abounded with electrifying passenger vessels because they use up so much energy at high speeds. However, he says Candela’s industry-first electric hydrofoil technology allows the boats to “fly” over the water, reducing drag. “We’re not just replacing inefficient conventional diesel vessels with similarly inefficient but electric vessels,” he says. “We’re actually reinventing ships in the sense that they’re becoming much more sustainable.”
Beyond Europe, a notable e-ferry project is underway for South America: Australian e-ferry manufacturer Incat Tasmania is currently building the world’s largest electric ferry, which will shuttle up to 2,100 passengers across the River Plate (Rio Plato) between Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Colonia, Uruguay, as soon as next year. Across Asia, e-ferry fleets are emerging in Thailand and India, while China made international headlines for its 2022 debut of the Three Gorges 1, a fully battery-powered 1,300-passenger sightseeing vessel on the Yangtze River.
Sightseeing vessels and tourist ferries are also converting to electric power closer to home. Niagara Falls’ iconic Maid of the Mist replaced its two old diesel-powered tour boats with two 600-passenger electric vessels in 2020. San Francisco has been a hotbed of transition: Its main Alcatraz Island ferries went electric in 2022; next year, San Francisco Bay WETA plans to launch five battery-powered passenger ferries, when Angel Island Ferry will also transition to electric. Washington State—which operates the nation’s largest ferry system —also plans to convert its fleet to hybrid-electric by decade’s end.

Hybrid-electric cruise ships
The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which represents more than 95 percent of global cruise ships, reports that over the next five years, more than 15 percent of new cruise ships will be configured for hybrid energy, with either battery or hydrogen fuel cell capabilities. For now, as with ferries, Norway is leading the charge on cruise line experimentation with hybrid-electric power.
Norway-based adventure travel company Hurtigruten—which encompasses Norway coastal cruise line Hurtigruten and cruise expedition brand HX—has been an electric-energy pioneer. HX rolled out the world’s first battery-hybrid-powered ship, the 530-passenger MS Roald Amundsen , in 2019; its sister ship, MS Fridtjof Nansen , followed suit in 2020. Meanwhile, three of the nine 274- to 500-passenger ships in Hurtigruten’s fleet have been retrofitted with battery packs and more efficient engines, resulting in a 25 percent reduction in CO2 emissions. Plus, Hurtigruten is planning to debut a futuristic zero-emissions ship , powered by a combination of battery packs, retractable sails, and solar panels, by 2030.
Norwegian newcomer Havila Voyages, meanwhile, has four 640-guest ships that feature the largest passenger-ship batteries at sea. Itineraries are focused on the Norwegian coastline and the batteries are strong enough to let the ships sail emissions-free for up to four hours. Upscale French line Ponant, meanwhile, launched a hybrid-battery expedition ship, the 245-passenger Le Commandant Charcot , in 2021. It can sail on battery power alone for up to eight hours (the line has plans for a zero-emissions ship to debut by 2030).
Ponant aims to launch a zero-emissions ship by 2030.

Why electric boats and ships are emerging now
The move to electric isn’t all voluntary: Urgent United Nations’ climate deadlines have been laid out to reach net-zero carbon emissions worldwide by 2050 —just 26 years away—or risk losing access to a “livable climate.” Larger ships have traditionally been reliant on heavily polluting bunker fuel, with shipping and boating behind 2 percent of total global greenhouse gas emissions.
In accordance, the International Maritime Organization (the U.N. regulatory arm for maritime transport) has committed to slashing ships’ carbon intensity by 40 percent as soon as 2030—a goal that the CLIA has likewise pledged. Stricter local regulations are also adding pressure: In Norway, greenhouse gas-emitting ships will be banned from its environmentally sensitive World Heritage fjords as of 2026, while local ports, most recently NYC , are moving to mandate that enabled cruise ships plug into shoreside power while in port.
Meanwhile, EV technology—which has seen significant advancements in battery strength, compactness, safety, charge times, and cost-efficiency in recent years—seems well-suited to respond. “It’s a mature technology, and one that is an easier sell for government or investment funding,” says Sturrup. And funding and subsidies for electric propulsion efforts in the maritime sector have indeed increased. In the United States, for instance, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has recently rolled out grants for electric ferry innovations—money that is already trickling into projects in places like NYC, for example, where plans are now underway to fully electrify a city ferry to Governors Island.
The downside of electric boats and ships
However, the technology is not without its environmental caveats. For one, the regional electric grids that serve to recharge the ships while in port need to be generated from renewable energy, like hydropower, solar, or wind, to ensure the desired emissions reductions. And the supply must be sufficient “to ensure you can plug in large ocean-going vessels without burdening the local electricity demand,” Sturrup says.
Then there’s the issue of whether the shore power charging infrastructure is available. For instance, while the CLIA reports that nearly half of its member cruise ships (120 ships total) are equipped to turn off their engines and run on electricity while they’re plugged in at port, a mere 33 ports worldwide are currently equipped to receive them.
For maritime decarbonization to work, “Available capacity and infrastructure are the key,” says Gerry Larsson-Fedde, chief operating officer for Hurtigruten, whose cruise ship fleet has enabled shore-power connectivity fleetwide. He says this has proven a challenge for “companies calling on many ports in different countries.” (Hurtigruten operates mainly in Norway where shore power connections are widely available.)
There’s also a barrier to entry with upfront costs. “For larger ships, it’s a major retrofit,” says Sturrup. “If the ship wasn’t initially designed to be made for battery electric, it would need to go to dry dock and be reconstructed to have electric systems put in, and that can be costly for shipowners.”
There are also concerns about the environmental impacts from the manufacturing and disposal of the batteries. Still, Sturrup says that ICCT research has proven that over “an entire life cycle of a battery, it’s going to be cleaner than an internal combustion engine.”
Ultimately, Hurtigruten’s Larsson-Fedde believes that despite any caveats, the maritime electric revolution is an industry imperative. Converting to clean energy, he says, “is the only right thing to do, and we are confident this will be a ‘license to operate’ in future travel.”

12 Themed Cruises You Should Have On Your Radar In 2024
T aking a cruise is an experience unlike anything else. Days at sea on a ship full of entertainment and relaxation make for a fantastic vacation. But what if you want even more from your cruise? A theme might be what's missing. In addition to all the usual cruise experiences, themed cruises allow fans of a particular artist, lifestyle, hobby (or even animal), to celebrate their passion on the high seas with activities, events, surprises, and sometimes special guests.
There are dozens of themed cruises on offer each year, usually hosted by major cruise lines like Norwegian , Carnival, and Royal Caribbean. But don't let their numbers fool you. According to Business Insider , themed cruises are rapidly climbing in popularity, and some trips are selling out in record time. That means it's important to find your dream-themed cruise and reserve your tickets as early as possible.
Fortunately, even if they're sold out, most themed cruises will let you join a waiting list, so there's still hope! Here are 12 themed cruises that will set sail in 2024 and are well worth boarding, either now or the next time they hit the high seas.

The Emo's Not Dead Cruise
If you truly know it's not a phase, the Emo's Not Dead Cruise is perfect for you. Gather with fellow emo fans for four days (and nights) of concerts, activities, and even a private party at Great Stirrup Kay in the Bahamas. Over a dozen bands will perform, including Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and Armor for Sleep. Alongside themed activities like a masquerade ball, cruisegoers can also enjoy surprisingly cheerful activities like a bellyflop competition in the ship's pool.
The first Emo's Not Dead cruise was in 2022. Cruisegoer and emo fan TheReelChris shared highlights on YouTube , calling it "EPIC." Fans in the comments section agree, with Schecterplayer92 adding, "This was one of the best experiences of my life." With a killer lineup and entertaining activities scheduled, it seems like Emo's Not Dead 2024 will also be a rad experience. The cruise will be hosted on the Norwegian Pearl, leaving from Miami on February 26 and returning on March 1, 2024. But what would an emo-related cruise be without a little sadness? Unfortunately, the cruise is already sold out. If you're interested, you can sign up for the waiting list and hope.
Meow Meow Cruise
Some of us know that no matter how great a vacation might be, cats would make it even better. Meow Meow Cruise has solved that problem. While guests unfortunately aren't allowed to bring their own furry friends aboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady, the four-day cruise will give them their feline fix in plenty of other ways.
Activities include cat-themed trivia and a scavenger hunt. But the best part may be communing with fellow cat people (many of whom stroll around the ship wearing cat ears). You'll also be able to mingle with real cats -- one of 2024's ports of call is Key West, where you'll find the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and its community of about 60 friendly polydactyl kitties, many of them descended from one of the author's own pets.
It's hard to find reviews for Meow Meow Cruise, but the fact that this themed cruise has been going on annually since 2015 speaks for itself. The 2024 Meow Meow Cruise sets sail from Miami on February 21, with a return date of February 25. Tickets are still available, but to be sure you don't miss out, consider booking right now.
In My Cruise Era
Sure, cruises are great — and cruising is a multi-billion dollar industry — but is anything more popular than Taylor Swift? For those who can't imagine anyone saying "no" to that question, there's no better cruise than In My Cruise Era. While not officially affiliated with Taylor Swift, this themed cruise is a passionate fan homage. Swifties will be able to dress up in their favorite Taylor-inspired looks, exchange friendship bracelets, perform their idol's songs during karaoke sessions, and more. We're also guessing there will be of lots impromptu song breaks throughout the ship from Taylor's extensive catalog.
Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will host this cruise, which sets sail from Miami on October 21, 2024 -- which, as People Magazine points out, is one day after the Eras Tour will be in the city. Fans lucky enough to attend the concert can continue their Taylor euphoria for four more days on the high seas. Since this is a new themed cruise, there aren't any reviews, but based on the positive fan vibes from Eras Tour concerts and movie viewings, among other events, we're guessing it's going to be a great time for Swifties. Swifties must agree, since the cruise is already sold out. Cancellations do happen, though, so hopeful fans can join the waiting list. Contact the cruise's organizers to sign up.
Disney's Halloween On The High Seas
Go on just about any cruise-related blog or website and you'll see that Disney Cruise Line's Halloween-themed cruise, officially called Halloween on the High Seas, is a popular favorite. As you probably expect from Disney, this themed cruise is perfect for a family vacation , so it's not too scary. The cruise is hosted on multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, and each one is decorated with the care and attention to detail you'll find in most Disney-related enterprises. The Pumpkin Tree is the highlight of the decor, with pumpkins that eventually appear on its branches and transform into lit and unlit jack o'lanterns.
Halloween on the High Seas also features Halloween activities (including a trick-or-treating night) and exclusive Halloween-themed desserts. Disney cruises in general are known for their opportunities to meet the studio's beloved characters, and during the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, some of those characters are in costume. Notably, Disney Cruise Line's official site tells us, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow will be dressed as the Sanderson Sisters -- who wouldn't want to see that?
This magical mixture of whimsy, fun, and exclusive opportunities is the perfect way to cast a spell on Disney fans of all ages. Luckily, Halloween on the High Seas is held during a number of different times in September and October, so you and your family should be able to find a place on board!
The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise
Sure, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies might be a little on the cheesy side, but let's be honest: lots of us dream of being in one in real life. You can get a little of the real-life Hallmark movie experience by visiting some of the movies' filming locations , but now there's a way to have an even more immersive experience: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise.
Passengers will get to meet Hallmark Channel movie stars, attend panels and photo ops, and get to see a new Hallmark Christmas movie before its world premiere. Maybe best of all, passengers can take part in lots of Hallmark Christmas movie-inspired activities, including tree lighting and cookie decorating -- all while wearing their favorite ugly Christmas sweaters.
2024 is the first year of the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. It was originally intended to be just one cruise, but a second one was added after the first one sold out. As of now, two Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruises are scheduled for 2024. Both go from Miami to the Bahamas and back and last four days in November. ... And both are sold out. But Christmas is a time of miracles, so if a Hallmark Channel Christmas experience on the high seas sounds like your dream come true, sign up for the waiting list as soon as you can!
Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises
Themed cruises are often about fandoms and hobbies. But Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten offers a themed cruise that's about something even bigger: the Northern Lights . There are several Northern Lights-themed cruises out there, including some luxurious options by Cunard. Unfortunately, the Northern Lights aren't always visible, but Hurtigruten stands out by offering a Northern Lights Promise for cruises scheduled between September 26 and March 31 and lasting longer than 11 days. If the Northern Lights aren't visible during your cruise, they'll give you another one. So if you're serious about seeing the Aurora Borealis, this is the company to choose.
The Northern Lights are the focus of Hurtigruten's eponymous cruises, but there are also other things to do on board, including scientific lectures and photography lessons. There are excursions, too -- notably a dog sledding option. Passengers who've taken one of Hurtigruten's cruises unanimously praise the stunning fjords and landscapes you can admire from the ship and during excursions, not to mention their experiences of seeing the Northern Lights. Some warn that the ships aren't as luxurious or modern as many other cruise ships, primarily because Hurtigruten's ships are also functional vessels intended to transport and deliver mail to various points on the Norwegian coast. Still, Cruise Critic reviewers like cmolaison praise the friendly crew, the surprising level of comfort, and the "stunning vistas" you'll see, saying he and his family "highly recommend" taking a Hurtigruten cruise.
Cruise & Crop Crafting Cruises
If the perfect vacation for you is a combination of R&R and crafting, you're in luck! There are several crafting-themed cruises. One of the most popular is organized by Cruise & Crop, with ships around the world hosting different crafting- and arts-themed trips. This makes them the most accessible themed cruises on our list, with different price ranges, departure points, itineraries, and ports of call. One thing all crafting cruises have in common, though, is groups of like-minded people exploring their creativity amid the other joys of cruising.
For instance, one of Crop & Cruise's 2024 offerings is a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, featuring scrapbooking and other papercraft classes taught by artist Barb Warne. The ship departs from Los Angeles on April 19, returning April 26. Many Cruise & Crop cruises sell out quickly, so if this idea has sparked both your wanderlust and your creativity, be sure to check their list of 2024 cruises and reserve as soon as you can.
Star Trek: The Cruise
For seven days and nights every year, thousands of Star Trek fans gather to be a part of a fandom extravaganza at sea. Star Trek: The Cruise is an experience that features celebrities aboard (2024's guests include LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, among many others), costume and cosplay events, and lots of fun activities.
But what makes Star Trek: The Cruise truly unique is that audience participation is very much encouraged. Passengers and celebrity guests are all considered the crew of one great, big, intergalactic vessel. Passengers get to interact with the guest stars in events like karaoke battles, and stars share parts of their earthly lives with Q&A sessions and even glimpses at other projects they may be involved in.
The first Star Trek: The Cruise was held in 2017 and since then it's been a fan favorite. Star Wars and cruising aficionado Aaron Bossig writes on Trek Movie.com that many fans go on the cruise every year, and proudly wear t-shirts from the previous ones. He calls Star Trek: The Cruise "an extra special convention experience." 2024's edition will be held on the Mariner of the Seas, departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 22 and returning on February 29.
Literature Festival At Sea
Once a year, aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2, passengers can mingle with writers, poets, journalists, and critics in a full-blown literary festival in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Literature Festival at Sea invites writers in all genres to host round table discussions, participate in Q&As revolving around their work and areas of expertise, host workshops, and converse with passengers.
Whether passengers want to participate as much as possible or just attend a few events, the Festival seems to be an excellent addition to a typical Queen Mary 2 voyage. On TripAdvisor , passenger Artemis C writes of her experience at a previous Literature Festival at Sea that "the whole week was a joy".
2024's lineup features crime novelists, journalists, historians, and more, for what's sure to be a fascinating week of discussion and discovery. If you'd like to combine an elegant transatlantic cruise and a literary experience, 2024's Literature Festival at Sea will take place from November 13-20, departing from Southampton, U.K., and arriving in New York. Cunard has also launched an Australian Literature Festival at Sea, scheduled from December 11-16, 2024, on the Queen Elizabeth, which departs from and returns to Sydney.
Chefs Making Waves
Many cruise lines are proud of their food offerings. Some cruises feature dishes created by world-famous chefs, and others even host food and wine festivals. But no culinary cruise event seems quite as, well, fun, as Chefs Making Waves. This culinary-themed cruise will set sail for the first time in 2024. Onboard will be a number of beloved celebrity chefs, including Anne Burrell and the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. Cooking demos and, of course, food tastings of all kinds (including sit-down meals, desserts, and street food) are on the menu. Best of all, Chefs Making Waves is an all-inclusive cruise, so everyone can eat and drink without having to pay extra!
There will be all of the usual cruise-related fun, from swimming to excursions, to help you work up an appetite. There will also be unique games, with some of the chefs participating in events like bingo and a celebrity chef sing-off. If this sounds like an awesome cruise, you're not the only one who feels that way. Chefs Making Waves will take place from March 25-29, departing from Miami with excursions in Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, Bahamas ... and it's already sold out. But you can still sign up for the waiting list . With a little luck, you'll be able to enjoy this delicious, themed cruise experience.
Soul Train Cruise
Imagine a festival with a lineup featuring some of the best soul and R&B acts of all time. Now imagine it's on a relaxing cruise ship. This dream is actually reality -- it's called the Soul Train Cruise. The popular themed cruise will be celebrating its 11th year in 2024 and the lineup is on fire. Dozens of groups and artists will perform, including The Temptations, Boyz II Men, and En Vogue. Passengers can also learn how to dance like people did back in the old school days of Soul Train's TV show, with lessons from some of the show's actual dancers. There will also be wine tastings, Q&A's, comedy shows, and a lot more.
With all of this on offer, it's no surprise that the Soul Train Cruise is sold out. But sign up on the waiting list and keep your calendar free from January 27-February 3, and you may get lucky. If you do, the cruise leaves from Fort Lauderdale, with ports of call in Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and St. Maarten.
The Gothic Cruise
The Gothic Cruise is an annual event held on an ordinary cruise ship. Goths mingle with "norms" but have their own private events on board, mostly DJ sets and concerts. There's also a masquerade ball, with Goths decked out in their finest Victorian-style garb ... as long as it meets ship safety requirements, that is. The cruise's website specifies that simulated weapons aren't allowed and notes that hoop skirts are fine for the ball but not in the ship's dining areas, "due to the close proximity of the tables". And yet, the Goth community thrives on these cruises -- and even gains norm fans along the way.
In a Porthole Magazine article about the Gothic Cruise, longtime attendee Spike Pittman says that many mainstream passengers are wary of the Goths at first, "But by the end they're begging to get into our private events." Some even book their future cruises to coincide with the Gothic Cruise, even if they don't plan on attending every event.
The Gothic Cruise has been held since 1989. Cruising doesn't seem very Goth, but in the end, the article points out, it comes down to what all themed cruises offer: a sense of community (in this case, one that often stays up all night and sleeps during the day). If this moves your little black heart, the 2024 Gothic Cruise will be held on the Norwegian Escape (but book through the Gothic Cruise's website for private event access), departing from Orlando on March 2, and returning March 9.
