The Best Time to Visit Colorado for Good Weather, Affordable Prices, and Fewer Crowds

These are the best times to visit Colorado, whether you're looking to ski, hike, or admire wildflowers.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

co trip weather

Colorado is an outdoor lover’s paradise, with four national parks and plenty of beautiful mountain towns offering hiking, biking, and skiing opportunities. Some travelers come to hit the trails, while others visit to escape the heat and enjoy the views. No matter your travel style, the state has something for you — even if you're more interested in an urban weekend in Denver than an adventurous mountain vacation.

Whatever you want to do on your trip, you'll need to know the ideal times to do it. To jumpstart your planning, remember the main tourist seasons in the Centennial State:

  • High Seasons: June to September and mid-December to March
  • Low Seasons: April to May and October to mid-December

Keep reading to get a local’s rundown on the best times to visit Colorado, including the prime windows for avoiding crowds, spotting wildflowers, and skiing.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Smaller Crowds

Much of Colorado’s tourism revolves around the outdoors, so the state has two busy seasons: summer (when outdoor pursuits like hiking and biking are at their best) and winter (aka ski season ). In the breaks between these busy times — namely, April through May and October to mid-December — you’ll typically find fewer people. When compared with summer and winter, these off-seasons come with more availability at resorts and restaurants and less traffic on the notoriously crowded I-70 mountain corridor.

Keep in mind, though, that the busiest and least busy seasons can vary depending on what part of the state you're visiting. In Denver , for instance, the airport may be packed in the winter thanks to travelers headed west to the mountains, but the city itself should be uncrowded. January and February can be great months to plant yourself in the Mile High City and enjoy its many indoor delights, from world-class museums to recently Michelin-starred restaurants .

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Good Weather

Anyone who has spent enough time in Colorado knows that the weather can change quickly — and vary from year to year. Typically, however, the best weather can be found between May and October. During this warm-weather window , snowfall is unlikely (but not impossible) and the sun is almost always shining.

If you run hot, you may want to skip July and August, which are usually the warmest months, and plan a trip instead for the spring or fall. Just keep in mind that conditions vary depending on what part of the state you're in. The weather is always cooler in the mountains (and at higher elevations) when compared to Denver. So, while an October trip may be mild and sunny in the capital, it could be snowy in the mountains — and, conversely, a July visit could be scorching in the city but bearable in Breckenridge.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Lower Prices

To snag the best deals in Colorado , you can typically follow a simple formula: when crowds are smaller, the prices tend to be lower, too. If you’re traveling near a ski area, hotel rates will likely be at their peak during ski season and not much lower during the height of summer. Those same hotels, though, will often have lower rates in the early spring (April and May) and late fall to early winter (late October to mid-December).

If you don't want to confine yourself to the off-season, there are other ways to save. Staying in a lesser-known mountain town instead of renowned destinations like Aspen can help you find lower rates, as can using Frontier Airlines — Colorado's homegrown budget carrier — when it's time to fly in and out.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Wildflowers

Nailing down exact dates for wildflower season is almost impossible, since the arrival of the blooms depends on several factors — most notably snowmelt and elevation. That said, the flowers usually emerge at lower elevations in either late spring or early summer. At higher elevations, the season starts later, often in July or even August.

The great thing is that even though wildflower season is hard to predict, you can almost always find blooms somewhere between May and August — you just have to be willing to make the journey (or hike) to see them.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Skiing

Colorado’s ski season typically runs from late November through early April, but it varies greatly based on the area. Some ski spots, like Arapahoe Basin and Keystone , welcome visitors as early as late October and remain open through mid-June or even early July. It all depends on snowfall, elevation, and snowmaking.

That said, arguably the best time to ski in Colorado is January and February. The snow tends to be nice and deep (and still falling), and there's lots of off-mountain fun on offer, too, thanks to events like Aspen Gay Ski Week and the Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival .

March is another great time for a ski trip , since it comes with less-frigid temperatures and (slightly) lower hotel prices than you'll find in the heart of winter.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Hiking

If you have the right equipment, you can trek many trails in Colorado year-round, but peak hiking season runs from June through October. During this window, most trails are snow-free and the majority of high-mountain passes are open. In the middle of summer (July and August), you’ll want to bring plenty of sun protection — but also some rain gear, since pop-up showers aren't uncommon.

Those who want to hike in May and early June will need to bring microspikes for traversing snow-covered trails, while those interested in trekking late into fall should pack layers and be prepared for the possibility of snow.

Best Times to Visit Colorado for Fall Foliage

Like wildflower season, the best time to catch the state’s colorful fall foliage changes based on summer moisture and elevation. Trees at lower elevations tend to change later, while those high in the mountains will transform earlier — sometimes before fall has even technically begun. In general, though, fall colors reach their peak between mid-September and mid-October.

Your best bet is to visit a place with a high number of aspen trees, which boast beautiful yellows, oranges, and reds, and to plan on traveling up or down in elevation in order to find trees at the peak of change.

Worst Times to Visit Colorado

With so many attractions throughout the year, it's hard to call any time the "worst" for visiting Colorado. The seasons that may not work for you depend on your priorities.

For budget-conscious or crowd-averse travelers, the state's winter and summer high seasons probably aren't ideal. While they offer the best conditions for seasonal sports, these peak times will be pricey and busy. Visiting in the spring and fall can net you a gorgeous mountain getaway for a fraction of the cost and with a fraction of the crowds.

There are also the obvious weather considerations. Skiers and snowboarders should avoid the summer (unless heading to the extra-long-season resorts), while hikers and campers should skip the winter if they don't have specialized skills and equipment.

Basically, there are peak and off-peak times for every pursuit and every town — but, taken as a whole, the state of Colorado can offer you a great vacation any month of the year.

Great App… BUT

We love this app, and use it all the time! It only has one MAJOR thank you flaw! The colors on the map for road conditions are to close, and therefore, are very hard to distinguish, especially for those with vision issues. Please fix this and choose bright colors that are very different from each other for each of the road conditions. If that is done, this app immediately becomes a 5 Star App! Until then, it gets a three… Barely!

Front Range/ West Side Story

COTrip. Org is my go to whether planning a trip or for a last minute run to Denver International Airport. Having to cross the Rockies over a high pass and a tunnel/ pass does make it interesting. Not to mention that the drive takes you through very popular ski areas (cross roads to even more of them and other outdoor destinations,) and it’s the heart of the commercial route from the eastern and western part of our nation. For all of these reasons and because of our extreme weather I use the CO trip website (and the the trip planner, now!) There have been times that weather has caused delays but we have the resource in this service to make informed decisions and arrive to our destination safely, albeit a little late. Other road conditions and closures can be monitored on the maps many layers, as well as, on cameras along the route. For all these reasons COTrip is a godsend and a very import state service. Add a thermos of coffee and appropriate sound track and I’m ready to go.

Two levels of terrible

There are two levels of terrible here. One is the app itself. The user interface designers made inexplicable choices. More importantly, CDOT’s data flow into this system makes the app mostly worthless. The timeliness, quality, and quantity of information CDOT feeds into the system of their lit road information signs, website, and app means that even a finely polished app would be useless. I get it. It’s challenging. CDOT is one thing, local dispatch another, reality on the ground yet a third. But CDOT is mostly useful as an agency for awarding various contracts (including to make an app). The actual value added by, say, having employees who can use their creativity and skills to integrate these data streams better to make CDOT’s road information system better, is close to 0. Don’t worry – CDOT can award a contract for that (to someone who doesn’t really get it).

Weather in Colorado: Climate, Seasons, and Average Monthly Temperature

co trip weather

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Colorado is a mild state when it comes to weather. Whether it’s the dog days of summer or the throes of winter, you’ll find a moderate temperature year-round compared to other parts of the country. Temperatures can fluctuate crazily in as little as 12 hours, but overall, if you dress in layers when visiting, you’ll be able to handle anything thrown your way by Mother Nature.

The closer you are to the mountains, the colder it’ll be no matter the time of year. One of the common misconceptions about Colorado is that it continually snows during the winter. While this is true in the mountains, the Denver metro area and surrounding areas don’t quite see as much snow as what’s depicted in movies and TV. Colorado does see an intense summer thunderstorm season, which we’ll dive into more as you learn more about the climate of The Centennial State.

Colorado’s Hail Alley

One of the most devastating weather events in Colorado that leads to tens of millions of dollars in damage each year is hail . Summer thunderstorms in the late afternoon shut down parts of the metro area, destroying cars, breaking windows, creating flash flooding at intersections, and wreaking havoc on whatever pocket they form over. Colorado is susceptible to dangerous hail because the Rocky Mountains allow rain to fall, turn to ice, get carried back up into the atmosphere, fall again, and continue to freeze until its heavy enough to do damage as hail.

When traveling in Colorado during the summer months, it’s essential to book flights early in the morning or later at night to avoid potential delays with air travel. If you’re driving, pulling off to the side of the road and waiting it out—even if your car gets dinged during it—is the safest option. Don’t try to stop under a highway bypass or other areas where you might block traffic and cause more harm than good.

Northern Colorado

Northern Colorado features bigger destinations such as Boulder and Fort Collins , popular destinations for Coloradoans and Wyomingites. Boulder features breweries, shopping, and more for travelers, especially during the summer months. Denver is cradled between the north and eastern part of the state but doesn’t see as much snowfall as other cities in the area.

Northern Colorado, particularly closer to the Wyoming border, sees cooler temperatures year-round and more snow than Denver and the surrounding areas. The closer you get to Wyoming on I-25, the windier it gets, too. Northern Colorado will see temperatures fluctuate from the low 30s to low 60s during winter and high 40s to low 90s during the summer.

  • Average High Temperature: 65 degrees F
  • Average Low Temperature: 38 degrees F
  • Average Temperature: 51 degrees F
  • Average Rainfall: 20 inches
  • Average Snowfall: 89 inches

Southern Colorado

Southern Colorado and its major cities like Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and Trinidad see moderate temperatures year-round. Colorado Springs is a destination for travelers , featuring the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, The Broadmoor Hotel , and the Air Force Academy.

Snowfall often accumulates more during the winter months in Colorado Springs but not so much in cities further south as you get closer to New Mexico. The Colorado Springs area does get windy during the summer and fall months. Southern Colorado will see temperatures fluctuate from the high 10s to the upper 50s during winter and low 50s to mid-80s during summer.

  • Average High Temperature: 62 degrees F
  • Average Low Temperature: 36 degrees F
  • Average Temperature: 48 degrees F
  • Average Rainfall: 16 inches
  • Average Snowfall: 39 inches

Eastern Colorado

Eastern Colorado is the gateway to the eastern portion of the United States. Filled with flat land and cities here and there, you won’t find as much traveling in this direction as you will when visiting other parts of Colorado. There are festivals, farmer’s markets, and other quirky stops along the path out of the state through its eastern part.

Eastern Colorado is more likely to have tornados spawn during the summer and be hit by punishing winds and snow in winter. This part of the state is also more likely to see hail during those summer thunderstorms. Eastern Colorado will see temperatures fluctuate from the low 20s to mid-50s during winter and low 40s to the low 90s in summer.

  • Average High Temperature: 64 degrees F
  • Average Temperature: 49 degrees F
  • Average Rainfall: 15 inches
  • Average Snowfall: 55 inches

Western Colorado

Western Colorado’s beautiful Rocky Mountain backdrop is almost like another state entirely when it comes to weather. From ski resorts to mountain towns, National and State Parks to visit , river runs, hiking trails, and everything you could imagine you could do outdoors—western Colorado is the destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

Snow can accumulate year-round, even in summer, when the temperatures start to dip closer to fall. The majority of snow in the state falls across the mountains, with temperatures getting the coldest for travelers during the spring, fall, and winter months. Western Colorado will see temperatures fluctuate from the low 10s to the high 30s during winter and low 30s to upper 70s in the summer months.

  • Average High Temperature: 54 degrees F
  • Average Low Temperature: 22 degrees F
  • Average Temperature: 37 degrees F
  • Average Rainfall: 23 inches
  • Average Snowfall: 175 inches

Spring in Colorado

Spring in Colorado is mild temperature-wise across the state. The mountains can still see snowfall well into May, as can the metro areas, so keep that in mind when traveling. Spring can be fickle with fog rolling in one morning and a freeze alert the next evening. Temperatures during spring can go from blazing hot one day to cold within 12 hours.

What to Pack:  Layers. Make sure you have layers you can either peel away or add on because temperatures will fluctuate during your trip. You may not need a heavy winter jacket in spring if you visit towards the end of the season.

Summer in Colorado

Summer in Colorado is dry and hot. With temperatures often breaking 100 degrees F in Denver and the surrounding area, it can be overwhelming for travelers not used to being a mile above sea level. Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent, often coming out of nowhere, bringing with them wind, torrential rain, thunder and lightning, and hail in the thick of it.

What to Pack:  Sunscreen and lip balm are a must for travelers—no matter the destination in the state during the summer. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and rain jacket if out and about to avoid being drenched by afternoon shower or thunderstorms.

Fall in Colorado

Fall in Colorado , like spring, sees mild temperatures, but they can change at a moment’s notice. Snow can come as early as late September some years. The wind picks up as winter gets closer, leading to leaves falling from trees and making it much colder than the temperate suggests.

What to Pack:  Like spring, pack layers. Make sure you have a winter coat available, a hat, gloves, and scarf will help, too. Sunscreen and lip balm are also a must like summer months to protect yourself at a higher altitude from the sun.

Winter in Colorado

Winter in Colorado can be brutal, especially if traveling to the mountains. Temperatures will drop, the wind chill will freeze you to the bone, and the occasional blizzard will shut down cities like Boulder, Denver, and Colorado Springs down completely. Be prepared for winter driving with ice, wind, and poor visibility at a moment’s notice.

What to Pack:  All things winter gear are a must during winter in Colorado. Make sure to have a good snow jacket, snow boots, and anything to keep you warm with the temperatures drop, and the wind picks up. Sunglasses are a necessity during snow, too, to help protect your eyes from the brightness.

Colorado Weather in March

Colorado March Weather

Colorado weather in March is not too terribly different from the wintery conditions you’ll see in late February as far as the ski towns goes. However, snowmelt will begin to happen in the lower parts of the valleys and lower altitude cities. Snow covers every mountain at this point, but roadways and walkway snows may start to fade away. The air is cool and dry and there are mostly sunny days around the entire state this month.

The average daily highs will be around the mid 50’s°F (10°C) in most parts of the state and average lows will in the low 30’s°F (-1°C). However, it’s not unlikely that you’ll see a few colder days slip in depending on the weather that year. Some days, especially in higher altitude regions, will see lows closer to the high teens, around 18°F (-7°C) more often.

No matter the time of year, altitude will always be a factor when traveling to Colorado. Some towns like Alma have an elevation of 10,300′ and others like Wray have an elevation of over 3,000′. As a matter of fact, altitude sickness affects nearly 10% of all visitors. You can prepare your body by eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of water, sleeping well, resting frequently and avoiding alcohol.

Colorado Snow & Skiing in March

co trip weather

Snow conditions in March are excellent in most ski areas, especially the north-facing mountains, which the below resorts have plenty of. The temperatures are beginning to rise, especially in late March, so snowmelt is common in lower altitude areas, but for the most part all ski runs and mountains will still be packed with great powdery snow.

Snowstorms actually roll in pretty regularly in March, with most cities reporting March as there highest snowfall month of the year. So fresh powder on top of the existing snow pack layers will make ski conditions wonderful this time of year. Pair that with the rising temperatures and you have a very comfortable ski day planned.

While powder will be available, there will be some runs or certain areas and towns that have more slush than powder. However, Colorado’s mountains rarely have hard ice sheets despite the snowmelt. Slopes could be crowded in areas at certain points, mostly due to the Spring Breakers and those trying to get the last bit out of peak ski season.

Colorado Affordability & Crowds in March

Colorado Crowds in March

Colorado in March will see higher numbers of visitors this month, mostly due to Spring Break and the last bit of peak ski season. While traveling here may require a decent amount of early planning, the slopes and the cities won’t feel extremely packed, though you may experience longer waits for restaurants and lift lines.

Early March tends to be busier in most places, while late March will see crowds drop off a bit for the Spring. This is the last month of Winter that has great snow conditions, so it will also mark the last month before hotel and travel rates trend downward for the slow season. You won’t be saving a lot of money with a trip in March, but you’ll certainly be in for great skiing and mild temps for outdoor recreation.

Hotel rates will vary by city, with most ski towns seeing some of the highest rates of the season, small towns being the cheapest and the capitol city of Denver averaging around $200 – $300 per night for the best hotels. Booking hotels, restaurant reservations, excursions and tours will require early planning and airfare will most likely be higher this time of year.

Visit Boulder

Visit Boulder

Boulder is a well attended ski destination each year, though it may not get recognized nearly as much as places like Breckenridge, Beaver Creek and Vail on the Epic Pass . It tends to be better suited for sportsman of all types, including cycling, hiking, rock climbing, and more. Locals take pride in the sports scene in Boulder and tourists will thrill at the activities and events available in March.

Boulder hosts events from it’s International Film Festival to Winter Craft Beer Festival to St. Patrick’s Day festivities. Perhaps one of the most exciting events near Boulder in Nederland is the Frozen Dead Guy Days happening at the beginning of the month. The event occurs over one weekend, where teams come to compete in the coffin races, watch free concerts and participate in other merry festivities.

Apart from the coordinated happenings, you can plan your own fun by participating in the various adventures that Boulder has to offer. For instance, there is over 300 miles of scenic hiking in Boulder and it’s available most times of the year. While March can be a bit more iffy as far as snowy weather goes, it’s still possible for a dry hike to be accomplished.

Boulder is well-equipped as a true city, as opposed to other small towns you’ll find in Colorado, complete with art museums, historical attractions, theaters, tours and shopping districts. But those in town to ski will be pleased that the surrounding slopes are perfect for shredding powder this time of year. Since March is such a busy month, it’s recommended you ski on the weekdays and save further exploring for the weekends.

Relax at Pagosa Springs

Relax at Pagosa Springs

Pagosa Springs is considered a hidden gem in the Colorado Rockies, with loads to offer tourists. March is actually considered the busy season for them, but the town is so secluded that it won’t feel overrun like other parts of the state. It’s known for being a relaxing destination with exquisite hot springs.

In the Winter while snow is still on the ground, Pagosa offers a lot of similar activities you’ll find in other Colorado small towns. You can go cross country skiing, dog sledding, fat biking, go hiking, ice climbing, ice fishing and ice skating in town. You can even partake in some excellent downhill skiing at the nearby Wolf Creek Ski Resort . But the best way to occupy your town in Pagosa Springs is to indulge in the ultimate hot springs experience.

The Springs Resort & Spa has the world’s deepest measured geothermal hot spring and grants access to all guests of the resort. This deep spring is part of a network of 24 different spring pools that can be enjoyed year round. Each pool is varies slightly from the others and comes in a range of temperatures as low as 83°F (28°C) and high as 114°F (45°C).

People of all ages will find a pool that fits their unique taste and will appreciate the additional amenities in this secluded town, like excellent dining options and historical attractions.

Breckenridge Snow Quality

Breckenridge is extremely popular with skiers and non-skiers alike, so March is sure to be a busy time of year. However, the “Spring Fever” you’ll experience here is aptly named. The weather is absolutely gorgeous for a day on the slopes in March, with the overall feeling being a little more casual, the sun shining, and the atmosphere warm and fun. As a matter of fact, the town requests visitors dress in layers and bring their sunscreen this month.

Families will enjoy this special time of year in one of the top ski destinations in North America as it accommodates a range of different vacation styles. The festival includes a unique Imperial Challenge, where competitors race mountain bikes to the ski lift, hike to the top and ski down to win.

The mountain boasts 5 different peaks with lifts to each and runs for every ability. Avid skiers will have a ball on the high alpine chutes and bowls, while younger skiers will enjoy the ski classes and small slopes available to them. Experience Garden of the Gods

Experience Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods is a national landmark near Colorado Springs, most well known for it’s extremely unique landscape with rock piles, jutting peaks and towers. There are fifteen miles of walking trails with lots of beautiful mountainous scenery, making it an excellent hiking destination.

Late March is one of the first times to go in the year, once the snow begins to melt in the area. However, the snow will not be completely gone at this point – there could even be a chance of snow flurries coming in while you’re here. The important thing is to dress appropriately.

If hiking through the snow does not appeal to your traveling party, other fun and adventurous activities include rock climbing, mountain biking and horseback riding – all of which you can do on your own or through a guided tour with the Nature Center. They also offer Electric Bike Tours, Segway Tours and Open-Air Jeep Tours.

We recommend beginning the journey at the Park Visitor & Nature Center , where you’ll get a history lesson, tour the museum and see exhibits and displays unique to the park. Afterward, you can sip on coffee and take in the scenic views through the large windows of the center, or go on one of their guided nature walks offered daily.

March Events in Colorado

March Events in Colorado

There are many events to experience in Colorado all throughout the year. March is Spring Break for many, but that doesn’t necessarily mean more events this month, save for the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Below we’ve listed the biggest and most popular long term events that appeal to most travelers in March.

Bud Light Rocks the Boat

Steamboat Springs holds this annual free outdoor concert series to guests visiting in March . Hosted by Bud Light, this event draws crowds to the outdoor stage for music genres ranging from rock to blues. Skiers will enjoy the timing of this seasonal event as concerts start up every afternoon right as the gondolas close to the slopes. A perfect way to apres ski in style.

St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations

Denver St. Patrick’s Day Parade is deemed the finest community event to happen in Denver annually over the course of the last 58 years. The parade consists of multiple bands playing Irish music, local musicians and performers, as well as Irish step dancers. Each year a young lady is also crowned “Queen Colleen” of the parade.

Colorado Springs St. Patrick’s Day Parade is similar to Denver’s featuring Irish music, bands and dancers on the parade route. They also host an annual Leprechaun Fun Run and a St. Patrick’s Day Run that you can sign up for in advance. In addition to the parade, the downtown area hosts it’s own celebration to keep the party going.

Colorado in March: Week by Week

co trip weather

Weather in the first week of March is likely feeling very similar to February temps. Expect snowy days, but not quite as often as you’ll experience in earlier Winter months. March is the beginning of Spring transition, so things are on their way to warming up.

Ski season is in full swing at this point – plus a lot of families are traveling for Spring Break around the country – making Colorado a busy state to be in this month. The mountains have plenty of fresh powder and snow pack to go around, but it’ll likely be crowded.

Bud Light Rocks the Boat is goin on in Steamboat Springs this week. This is an annual free outdoor concert series open to guests, drawing crowds who love everything from rock to blues.

Second Week

The second week of March is likely to feature a few days where temperatures are warmer. Blue bird days are on the horizon, where skiers can enjoy comfortable temperatures and sunny skies while shredding powder.

Lift lines and hotels are going to be pretty full at this point, since everyone’s coming to town for the premium snows at this point in the season. Ski school may be difficult to get into last minute, so plan ahead if you want to take part this month.

St. Patrick’s Day typically falls on this week in the year and you’ll likely find lots of deals and specials going on at the bars and restaurants in most towns around Colorado. Don’t miss the parades in Denver or Colorado Springs, if you happen to be visiting.

Weather is noticeably getting warmer over the course of the month, but ski conditions are still great in most areas. The snow will stay on the mountain for a bit longer but snowfall may begin to dwindle at this point.

Ski crowds and travel crowds in general are seeing their final days during this week of the month, in conjunction with the warmer temps. Garden of the Gods is a great place to chill out as the weather permits and seek nature instead of jam packed slopes.

St. Patrick’s Day specials are probably still going on at this point, but not much else in the way of special events – save for delicious apres ski drinks and food deals.

Fourth Week

At this time, the weather is definitely beginning to thaw out the mountains and most skiers will be heading out of town. Lift lines will be a little easier to manage as you enjoy the last of the ski season and great snow.

Most ski areas will begin to close at this time as Colorado starts to enter their slow season. This is a great time to take advantage of lower rates for travel expenses while still getting a little more out of the existing snow.

Whether you choose to shred the powder at great ski areas like Telluride, Beaver Creek or Copper Mountain, or attend a St. Patrick’s Day event, you’re going to have a great time in Colorado in the month of March. Crowds may be hopping this time of year, but if you enjoy lively cities and slopes, you’re in for a treat.

You can still seek out relaxation and take in the beauty of Mother Nature at more secluded areas like the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, or soak in the warm waters of Pagosa Springs this month. But rates and crowds will still be fairly high in this season.

Transportation | two dead in shooting at lake pueblo state park, transportation | new cdot travel app aims to make navigating colorado road closures, winter conditions easier, free cotrip planner app integrates real-time information on iphone and android devices.

Interstate 70 was closed down in ...

The free COtrip Planner app, which launched Oct. 1 in the Apple and Android app stores, adapts the same road-condition and closure information that CDOT long has provided via its COtrip.org website . The website also has a more user-friendly refresh, and both integrate Google’s recognizable mapping interface as their backbones, with CDOT live conditions available as overlays.

The COtrip changes were the result of a $2.1 million state contract that also included an upgrade of CDOT’s Advanced Traffic Management System. That system feeds live data to its operations centers and plays a key role in management of highway incidents.

App users can plot out driving routes and see traffic buildups, weather conditions affecting travel, construction projects and partial or full road closures — along with stretches where chain laws are in effect. A “trucker mode” shows information specialized for big-rig drivers.

The app’s “TellMe” function allows hands-free use, with the app announcing upcoming conditions and incidents along the route or in the area. The app also allows users to view live road cameras on CDOT’s network across the state.

A drawback is that live road information is available only for state and federal highways, not local roads.

Later this fall, CDOT says, winter-specific features will be added including weather alerts and a snowplow tracker. While turn-by-turn directions aren’t yet available, CDOT says that function is expected in a future update.

The COtrip app enters a field that’s been dominated for years by Colorado-specific travel apps developed by private companies that incorporate road information provided publicly by CDOT. But while some of those stay up to date, others have sputtered or been neglected, making them unreliable.

One app by a private developer is called CDOT Colorado Road Conditions and costs $2.99 on the Apple App Store. Department spokeswoman Stacia Sellers said it has no official connection to CDOT, despite the name.

Diverging diamond interchange at CO 21 Powers Boulevard and Airport Road

Travel advisory.

Colorado Springs  — The Colorado Department of Transportation with its contract partner WW Clyde, will start a major construction project in east Colorado Springs next week to replace the existing Powers Boulevard (Colorado Highway 21 / US Highway 24) and Airport Road intersection with a diverging diamond interchange.

Construction activity will take place adjacent to the highway with minor traffic impacts on Powers Boulevard and Airport Road during the first year of construction. The project is expected to be completed in late 2026.

“The new interchange will be built north of the existing signalized intersection without disturbing current traffic patterns during most of the construction. This is one of the Region’s busiest intersections and keeping traffic moving outside of Peterson Space Force Base is essential,” said CDOT Region 2 Transportation Director Shane Ferguson.

This project will realign Airport Road, improve the Airport Road and Stewart Avenue intersection, and add pedestrian and bicycle facilities. Work includes bridge and ramp construction, placing embankment, concrete paving, overhead sign structure installation, new traffic signals and permanent water quality ponds.

The DDI design was selected for this location to address congestion, improve safety, and add multimodal facilities that will allow for a safer and more comfortable travel experience for cars, pedestrians and cyclists. Similar interchanges have been constructed at Fillmore Street and I-25, Research Parkway and Powers Boulevard in Colorado Springs and other locations across Colorado.

When driving a DDI, motorists proceed through a traffic signal upon entering the interchange and simply follow their lane to the opposite side of the roadway. Drivers needing to access I-25 from CO 60 will turn left at the on-ramp without having to stop again or wait for oncoming traffic to pass. Through traffic proceeds to a second traffic signal and follows the lane back to the customary side of the road.

In addition, left-turn movements, which are a typical challenge with standard interchanges, are eliminated with a DDI, which minimizes T-bone type accidents.

Drivers can view the video below on how to drive a DDI for more detailed information: Diverging Diamond Interchange Video

Additional Benefits of DDI

  • Reduces delays using a two-phase signal as opposed to a traditional four or six-phase signal
  • Requires fewer lanes but can handle more traffic capacity
  • Reduces conflict points at intersections
  • Improves pedestrian crossing safety with easier access to medians
  • Increases left-turn capacity
  • Eliminates wrong-way entry to ramps
  • Costs less than a typical free-flow interchange utilizing single directional flyover ramps

Traffic Impacts

Motorists and area residents can expect the following impacts during construction:

  • Daytime work hours Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m
  • Saturday work can be expected
  • Intermittent lane closures and traffic shifts
  • Infrequent overnight closures to set bridge girders
  • Trucks entering and exiting the work zone
  • Speed reductions and width restriction are possible
  • Construction schedule is weather dependent
