MSC Moving U.S. Headquarters to Miami

  • January 17, 2024

MSC Seascape in Miami

MSC Group has announced its new home in Downtown Miami.

According to a statement, the MSC Group’s $100 million investment in Miami-Dade will bring approximately 250 South Florida-based team members from MSC Cargo, MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys under one roof in a new state-of-the-art facility within Block 55 at Sawyer’s Walk.

MSC Cargo has had a presence Miami-Dade for more than 25 years and now MSC Cruises is moving to establish the Cruise Division’s North American headquarters as part of the Group’s commitment to Miami. MSC’s Cargo headquarters has been in New York City and will continue to be based there.

The 130,000-square-foot office space will support the continued growth of MSC Cruises and the newly launched Explora Journeys in the North American market, allowing them to expand alongside MSC Cargo, the company said.

Per the economic impact analysis run by Miami-Dade County, this latest development from the MSC Group will generate 668 direct and indirect jobs over the next three years. It will also provide $65.2 million annually in recurring direct economic impact (Gross Regional Product), delivering measurable growth to the local community.

The Cruise Division is firmly establishing Miami as its new home and is building a new, next generation cruise terminal at PortMiami, set to become North America’s largest once it’s completed later this year. The new terminal will feature a four-story building capable of accommodating 36,000 passenger movements per day, and feature enough berthing space to serve three latest generation ships at once.

With its cruise and cargo operations, The Beacon Council identified MSC Group as a perfect fit for Miami-Dade and provided guidance together with Cushman & Wakefield in the Company’s search for a new North American Cruise Division headquarters, as well as new office space for MSC Cargo’s South Florida operations. Miami-Dade’s strong labor pool and attractive business environment played significant factors in MSC Group’s decision to invest in Downtown Miami.

“We are thrilled to invest in the future of MSC and Miami-Dade County by making this important move,” said Fabio Santucci, President and CEO of MSC USA. “Miami has been a pivotal part of our growth story in the U.S., and we are proud of our strong history of driving the local economy. The Beacon Council was a significant driver in helping us make our decision. They played an instrumental part in making us feel welcome to make this commitment to expanding in South Florida.”

“This is an exciting time of growth for the Cruise Division and we are happy to call Miami-Dade our new home as we continue to expand our reach throughout the Caribbean and North America,” said Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman, MSC Cruises. “We look forward to bringing more jobs to the local economy and will work with Miami-Dade County to ensure we are a leader in making an important impact in the community.”

“This announcement underscores Miami’s status as a world-class destination and premier access point for companies seeking to extend their influence throughout the continent and the Caribbean,” said Rodrick T. Miller President and CEO of the Miami-Dade Beacon Council. “Miami-Dade provides an ideal backdrop for a distinguished brand like MSC Cruises, celebrated for its contemporary offerings and international flair. With our diverse and skilled workforce, coupled with a top-tier cruise port, Miami warmly embraces MSC Cruises. We are thrilled to support and champion their expansion in the region.”

“Miami-Dade is thrilled to welcome MSC Group,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “We are up for the challenge in supporting their expansion. PortMiami is the number one Cruise Port in the world and an important economic engine for our community generating more than $40 billion annually. MSC Cruises, one of the world’s most innovative cruise lines with strong global influence will not only make an impact on our economy but seamlessly connect with our diverse residents and visitors.”

‘I have to know the tea’: Carnival Cruise passenger shows 2 travelers being arrested as soon as ship ports. Here’s why

Carnival Cruise Line passengers were allegedly arrested as soon as the ship docked, and one passenger caught one of the arrests on camera.

In a viral video that has racked up over 2.5 million views and 84,500 likes, police officers can be seen walking the hallway of the cruise ship and escorting a man off the ship in handcuffs. The video was posted by TikToker Tae Tae (@prettyshawntae) on Monday.

“Carnival cruise arrested passengers as soon as we ported in Miami at 7am,” text overlaid on the clip read. “This is the third person this morning.”

In the comments section, some commenters poked fun at Carnival Cruises

“Carnival cruise line the Ghetto of the sea,” user MPB60510 wrote.

“Carnival Cruise Lines turning into Waffle House on the Water,” user Gentleman Josh said.

@prettyshawntae #carnivalcruise #fyp ♬ Get It Sexyy – Sexyy Red

Others tried to guess what the passengers’ offenses were.

“People be booking trips with stolen credit cards and identity,” user Reginaldcarson8 wrote.

“If you have warrants and decide to go on a cruise as soon as you dock back they will arrest you,” a second viewer said.

“This is what happens when you think you got your weed or liquor on board lol,” another added.

While it is unclear what led to the alleged arrest of the passengers, there have been stories about cruise ship passengers engaging in illegal behavior in the past. Recently, two Miami women were accused of using fake credit cards to spend thousands while aboard a cruise. Earlier this year, two passengers on a cruise ship from Miami to the United Kingdom were arrested after over 150 pounds of marijuana was found on the ship. Earlier this month, passengers on a Royal Caribbean cruise faced charges for “lewd” behavior in the ship’s sauna.

The Daily Dot reached out to Tae Tae via TikTok comment and Carnival Cruise Line by email for an update and more information.

5 Reasons To Feel Good About Family Cruising In 2024

I t’s time to feel good about family cruising and gift everyone an unforgettable experience. After a swift recovery from the pandemic pause – cruise vacations are hotter than ever.

Travelers Love The Cruise Experience

Did you know that 12.6 Americans have already taken a cruise, according to the Cruise Lines International Association.

I’ve met devoted cruisers aboard ships from Carnival Corporation’s nine brands who have sailed literally hundreds of times. My family traveled with a woman who retired aboard Holland America Line ships, moving from one itinerary to the next without ever sleeping on land.

It’s not unusual now to meet repeat cruisers who have sailed dozens of times, often on the same cruise line. That’s going to become more common, as CLIA’s “State of the Cruise Industry 2023” reports that more than eight in 10 guests plan to cruise again.

Here are five reasons why that’s happening.

1. Family Cruising Is A Good Value Vacation

Family cruising is a great value with lodging, food, entertainment, childcare and transportation often included in one price. Cruise experts estimate that a vacation at sea is a 25% – 50% better value than land-based resort equivalents.

Families save even more by being able to drive to a cruise port and eliminate the stresses of flying. Look for one of 20 homeports around the country from New York City to Galveston, Texas; or Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego, Baltimore, Charleston, Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Also save on the hassle factor of flying.

There are often deals, too. Repeat cruisers know how to find sales that may offer upgrades or specialty dining options, or include gratuities or drink packages. I recommend newcomers contact a cruise travel specialist and work with them to find the best value for their needs.

2. Cruise Vacations Guarantee Variety And Entertainment, Stress-Free

Even repeat cruisers discover a variety of experiences because there are always new ships. Carnival Cruise Line’s Jubilee , the cruise line’s newest ship, sets sail this December from Florida, and there’s no need to worry about booking hotels. Carnival Jubilee features more spacious Family Harbor staterooms and suites, plus a designated lounge for breakfast, snacks and activities together.

Love to travel for musical events? Aboard Sun Princess , the largest Princess Cruises ship ever built , look for more entertainment and new shows (“Spellbound by Magic Castle” anyone?)

Forget researching the hottest new restaurants, although you have to plan ahead to sample any cruise line’s premium restaurants. Holland America Line, for example, has strengthened its commitment to culinary excellence at sea with celebrity chefs like David Burke and Jacques Torres. The cruise line recently partnered with the famous Chef Morimoto, whose new Morimoto by Sea restaurant will open onboard Nieuw Amsterdam later this year.

Carnival Cruise Line has tapped celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse as its “Chief Culinary Officer.” Food Network star Guy Fieri has a complimentary Guy’s Burger Joint or Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse on several ships. NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal is Carnival’s “Chief Fun Officer,” and his Big Chicken restaurant – also complimentary – is very popular.

3. Family Cruising Experiences Appeal To All Ages

Cruising is a great bet for extended families whether they are looking for a bucket list trip in nature to Alaska or the Mediterranean. Explore beaches or fjords during an adults-only Seabourn expedition cruise. Younger children love Carnival Cruise Line ships with all the bells and whistles for kids – and those who are kids at heart – like a giant water slide or roller coaster at sea. Mix up the sophisticated urban vibe of luxurious Cunard ships with watching for whales, dolphins and birds while crossing the Atlantic. Those with disabilities have many options to accommodate their needs.

Supervised activities for kids and teens empower parents and grandparents with adult time. Go to the gym, the spa, indulge in a specialty dinner, play cards or simply spend some time together. Carnival Cruise Line’s Camp Ocean starts at age 2 while there is day care for babies starting at six months.

Cunard offers a free Night Nursery for those aged 6-23 months so adults on a family cruise can enjoy drinks, dinner and a show.

Princess Cruises’ new youth programming includes star gazing and shore excursions that are Discovery and Animal Planet exclusive tours.

4. Family Cruises Focus On Sustainable Tourism, Environmental Protection

Family cruisers will be pleased to know that the industry has accelerated research into environmental technologies and practices, including environmental education and programs on board. Carnival Corporation brands are leading the way in sustainable practices with everything from making their own water, recycling, reducing carbon emissions, ships powered by liquified natural gas, and reducing food waste.

Depending on your family cruising itinerary, learn about the ways your cruise line is giving back to local communities through training, economic and social investments, environmental cleanups and charitable work.

5. Family Cruising Is One Of The Easiest Ways To Broaden Horizons

Last but not least, any travel adds immeasurably to our development as people. And a family cruise is one of the best value, least stressful travel options which appeal to all ages and support sustainable tourism. You’ve probably read the quote often misattributed to St. Augustine: “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself. Bon Voyage!

Repeat cruiser Eileen Ogintz, syndicated columnist of Taking the Kids, contributed this post about family cruising for sponsor Carnival Cruises P&LC. Opinions expressed are her own.

Cruise vacations are hotter than ever; it's time to feel good about family cruising and gift an unforgettable experience to loved ones.

The FBI has arrested a Norwegian cruise ship worker in Alaska after he allegedly stabbed three people with medical scissors while onboard, reports say.

The suspect, identified as Ntando Sogoni from South Africa, was recently hired by Norwegian and boarded its Encore cruise ship in Seattle on Sunday, the Juneau Empire newspaper reports, citing an affidavit filed by FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy. The ship left that day for a weeklong, round-trip excursion to Alaska with stops including Glacier Bay National Park and Victoria, British Columbia.

"According to court documents, on May 6, 2024, Ntando Sogoni, 35, was working on the cruise ship when other ship employees observed the defendant attempting to deploy a lifeboat," the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Alaska said in a statement. "Sogoni was contacted by ship security and escorted to the ship’s medical center for an assessment.

"Upon arrival, Sogoni physically attacked a security guard and a male nurse inside an examination room and proceeded to enter another examination room where a woman, who is a U.S. citizen, was being examined," the statement continued. "He grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed the woman multiple times in the arm, hand and face. He also stabbed two security guards who intervened -- one in the head and one in the back and shoulders."

Sogoni, who officials say was detained in the ship’s jail, was arrested by the FBI on Tuesday in Juneau, Alaska.

He is now facing a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction.

If convicted, he faces a maximum 10-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine.

A Norwegian spokesperson told FOX Business that after its "newly employed crew member" became "violent without provocation," a security team "quickly detained him, and the onboard medical staff treated those involved for non-life-threatening injuries.

"We condemn violent behavior of this nature and are committed to the safety and security of all crew members and guests on our ships," the spokesperson added. "We commend the onboard security team for their brave actions."
